Беркут-одна из наиболее известных хищных птиц  семейства  ястребиных. Самый крупный орел — длина тела до 90 см, размах крыльев 180–240 см. Самки гораздо крупнее самцов — их вес достигает 6,7 кг, у самцов — до 4,6 кг. Окраска тёмно-бурая, на затылке золотистые перья. Крылья широкие и длинные, хвост закруглён. У молодых птиц основание хвоста и пятна на подкрыльях белые. У старых птиц рулевые перья с беловатым основанием. Очень крупные когти, которыми беркут захватывает свою добычу. Клюв крючкообразно загнут вниз, массивный.

Населяет обширные верховые болота и леса по их окраинам. Везде редок. Огромные гнёзда (в некоторые из них может вместиться лошадь) строит на деревьях, устраивая их в развилке крупных ветвей у ствола. Строительный материал — толстые сучья деревьев, внутри гнездо выстилается травой и шерстью. В кладке 1–3 грязно-белых с бурыми пестринами и крапинками яйца. Насиживание длится 45 дней. Молодые птенцы покрыты белым с сероватым налётом пухом, который впоследствии заменяется чисто белым. Проводят в гнезде 2 месяца, после чего некоторое время держатся около гнезда, самостоятельными становятся спустя месяц. Беркут ведет оседлый образ жизни, часть птиц в осенне-зимний период кочует.

Питается в основном грызунами и падалью. Иногда нападает на животных покрупнее — на сусликов, зайцев, хорьков, и даже лис. Может охотиться и на животных, превышающих его вес, но только в том случае, если это детеныш или больное животное. Часто охотится на птиц, догоняя их в воздухе. Подолгу летает за птицами, которые летают быстрее его, но менее выносливые, после чего с легкостью схватывает уставшую, загнанную птицу.

Often hunts birds, catching up with them in the air. Flies for a long time after birds that fly faster than him, but are less resilient, after which he easily catches a tired, hunted bird.

This post on primarchs holdng their babes makes me think of what it was like when Lilith was born, the way she'd been born an ugly thing that later fluffed up and became adorable, but had so clearly been a mutant.

Sanguinius holding this hideous mutant babe, with wet feathers clinging to tiny currently useless wings, eyes closed and only capable of touch and smell. Perhaps at first he felt fear, but then he just felt nothing but love for this tiny creature he'd helped to create, putting up his wings to shield her from both the harsh desert winds and the judgemental stares of those who saw her aside from Amara. The Blood who knew Sanguinius had been an adorable perfect babe, but his child was so much less.

Yet he loved her all the same, and in the coming days her feathers fluffed up and her eyes began to open, a dark blue like all newborns have. Her mother and father loving her always, how when Amara needed a break, he would keep her warm and safe within his feathers, or in a sling, where she would cling tightly to him. Feeling pride even as her eyes turn to the bloody red of blood stones, instead of his yellowish gold, or her mother's faded blue. She is beautiful, perfect, and he loves her with all his heart, even as he notices the talons she possesses, the way he ends up having to hunt and bring blood for a child too young and small to hunt, but needs it nonetheless.

He doesn't care. He will do what he can for her, to allow her to survive on this harsh world where a child's life is not a thing to be taken lightly, where every child that survives to adulthood is a blessing, he will make certain that Lilith is one of those lucky children.
