okay soooo of course I have to shout out @inkwingsinc's fic, bit my gun with my black-gold gums (which, if you haven't read yet, just call off work now because you WILL LOSE SLEEP reading this divine fic!!!). it is genuinely one of the best writing i've ever read, and the plot/characters/story are so unique and carefully thought through. it's like, god-tier. ink is a treasure, and we are blessed to have this absolute GIFT !

the first feyd x reader fic I read was @peggyao3's fic, preyd, which i still go back and re-read because it just hits. Every. Time. Peggy also has so many more Feyd fics that leave me drooling, and I force myself not to read them all because I *will* devour them all too quickly.

@luminnara also has a great collection of feyd fics, including my personal fave, gladiator!

i also really really enjoyed @sansaorgana's thrown to the wolves fic!!!

if you want something else in the dune-universe, i HIGHLY recommend fleshed in the wife by @thefudge. it's paul x irulan and is INCREDIBLE.

(idk if all of them will be the level of "fucked up" you're hoping, but considering they are all feyd fics, well.... they're all naturally a tad fucked up. i just know that there are a lot of fics out there that I've enjoyed that I'm blanking on. if I've comment on their fic, chances are I enjoyed it and I just have terrible memory.)

tbh i really try not to read a whole lot of feyd fics, especially right now, because i don't want to worm its way into my own ideas/writing, so those are the main ones I've enjoyed!!!

also, if you want fic recs outside of that, trust that I read a lot of...ahem. Weird shit? basically anything in my bookmarks on AO3 are what I consider to be the crème de la crème, particularly this venom x reader fic collection by @snarky-badger or this pennywise x reader fic (yes, really.) i re-read both at least once a year. Long fic recs (50K-100K+)

1. to the world that never let you be by ImperialMint. Look. I'll hand out my own throat so willingly to any scar reveal fic. The trope is just so dear to my heart, and this one in particular was something else. It broadly covered every single feeling you might be looking for in a Merlin fic, and its characterization of both Arthur and Merlin was top tier. I basically sell my soul to any fic that does justice to their characterization, and this one did so much more than that.

2. What I'd Have Done by @flight-of-fantasy. I solemnly swear you will never read something like this fic. I read it in one day from how on edge I was all the time. I had to recount it to my friends in the timespan of three hours because of how much screaming and dramatic pauses there was. Simply, the brilliance of plot here is unmatched. Arthur's characterization as a strategist shook my innards, and Merlin's unapologetic nature was chef's kiss. It's so hard not to give away the plot while recommending this so just.. just read it.

3. Redemption by flakedice, Zerda. Soon, you will find a parallel post to the best 10 episodes with the worst 10, featuring first and foremost The Disir. Honest to God, I could literally go on ages ranting about how much agony this episode brought me. It was the blow that awoke my eyes to the possibility of fuck, this show isn't going to end well. I once thought about shitting on that episode like I did with 5×13 in My heart is readily yours, but fics like these hold me back because they already gave us everything. It gave us the ending we deserved. Gold. Everything in this was gold. The world building, the character development, the fact that Arthur has been given time. Truly a fix-it that fix-ed my heart.

4. Talking about deviations from The Fucking Disir, The World I Built for You by Fulgance is a must. It was the first fic I've read from the How They Didn't Find Out (magic reveal one-shots) series, and from then on I was * s o l d *. Whichever fic you decide to read from this, I guarantee you, you will have the time of your life. Fulgance is the one author I will always recommend without a shadow of a doubt. There is not a single work of theirs that will disappoint you. They will only break you.

5. Deep In My Heart I'm Concealing by @citharaposts. True story about this fic, I squealed when I read its summary. “I'm not standing here as a king, Merlin!” was the quickest catalyst to ever make me start a fic. I specifically wrote a spoiler-free comment for the author and left it in the first chapter so that anyone who's thinking about whether or not to go into yet another 100K fic will rest assured that it's an amazing ride. Have real fun with this one.

6. It Was One Kingdom, Once by queerofthedagger. Two things, if they happen, you leave everything behind and go thank your God for blessing you with it: @queerofthedagger posting a new Merlin fic, and it being a Royal Hanahaki AU. Like so many other tropes the author has nailed, this was the best Hanahaki I've ever read (across fandoms). It's so intricate and detailed and the world building is on another level. If our world was burning and I had only one thing to save, it'll be the works of this author.

sorry if you've answered this somewhere already - out of the books you've read this year, which three did you enjoy the most? and out of the fics you've read this year, which three did you enjoy the most?

All the fics I loved this year I mostly recced as and when on my fic recs tag, and tbh I don't think I read enough TF fic this year to really sort them into a top three- if I loved it, I put it up somewhere, mostly. If I had to pluck three out, I'd say Red Gold (god tier Rodimus characterisation), Your Own Hands (a reread, but still my favourite taraprowl fic, it gets the nod) and... oh actually. Okay, this one isn't Transformers, but I have to give a shout out to this Lupin III interactive fiction Twine fic that is an INCREDIBLE use of form to do something very ambitious with a fic. It's so good! If I do have any even casual Lupin enjoyers following me, definitely take a look.

The books, discounting one I already recommended:

Gilgamesh: A New Translation of the Ancient Epic, translated by Sophus Helle, is probably the single best book I read this year. I love the Epic of Gilgamesh very much, and this is a lovely translation, but what tipped it over for me was his essays after the poem where he discusses it in a way that is both accessible and also gets into the finer points of how to approach and appreciate the poem in a wider context. His discussion of the way gender plays into the power structures of the poem and the overview he gives of contemporary Iraqi cultural reaction to the poem were especially interesting. Especially after the former, I am really excited to read his book published this year translating and discussing all the poems of Enheduanna! Highly recommended. God I love Gilgamesh.

I reread The Invention of Love by Tom Stoppard, a play set in the Victorian era based (very loosely) around the life, death and afterlife of A. E. Housman. It's a really dense play on a lot of levels, mostly well known for being really obtuse. It has about six deeply obscure references to classical scholarship per sentence, twice as many offhand references to Victorian Oxbridge Stuff that go unremarked on, the timeline constantly jumps back and forth, a meaningful chunk of it is a dead guy talking to his younger self on the Styx, and they spend most of that time discussing the minutiae of latin grammar in poetry (with absolutely no dumbing down for the audience) as a metaphor for their unrequited yearning. I believe when it premiered on Broadway, they basically had to provide a book of like. Explanations as to what the fuck every other conversation was referencing. But I love it, even though I understand maybe fifty percent of it, because it's so beautifully written and clever and funny and able to withdraw from the ever-present threat of sentimentality. One of my favourite plays of all time. The 'poetical feelings are a peril to scholarship' exchange gets me every time. On my knees begging for a fucking proshot to be made of a performance one day.

A Play of Bodies: How We Perceive Videogames by Brendan Keogh is my favourite nonfiction by a narrow margin. It's a book that outlines a way to approach analysis and criticism of video games through a phenomenological framework, and it made me completely re-think how I understand what the 'text' of a video game is. This one is very much a work of academia, though it does give a lot more overview of what phenomenology is than, say, the average philosophy text is likely to, since it sits more in the 'games studies' area where that's not taken as much for granted, so it's not totally inaccessible. It made me think a lot about how video games exist as a unique medium in ways that completely diverge from the standard narrative of 'videogames are unique due to interactivity'. It takes a lot for me to be impressed by writing about games, given just how much of it I read/have read, but Keogh never disappoints.

@star-puff ->  the talent in this one… it shines like the sun! seriously, meg is a fantastic storyteller that she’ll make you sympathize for characters you hate LMFAO there’s so much versatility between her works and each piece is so unique, she really knows how to set the mood and tone between characters in each scene… like she can work with ANYTHING... it’s nothing short of amazing

@neonghxst -> can paint a picture in your mind like claude monet’s water lilies with her words. el’s imagery in her works suck you in, like you’ll hear every sound she’s describing and she makes it so easy to close your eyes and picture everything. also has the prettiest hc’s ever?? her writing is a gift. not only that but she has a rockin’ personality; so fun to talk to and her blog makes you feel at home

@ahtsumu -> listen, I love flo’s headcanons they’re always so new and fun! I’m always nodding my head along to what she has to say like “yes, yes that is EXACTLY atsumu!!” her blog makes you feel like y’all are bffs lol like when she’s on the dash it’s basically the same feeling as watching a chick flick movie with your bestie. she’s such a joy (also has a jjk dedicated blog that you can follow @gojcsatoru)

@edensxgarden -> I think the best way to describe eden’s writing is the feeling when you’re watching a ghibli movie. there are these slow, quiet moments between scenes that are written so beautifully and make you appreciate the piece so much more. she could literally write about spreading nutella on a slice of bread and she would be able to make it seem so magical. also does writing for genshin impact!

infantblue -> I read her fic ampersand and fell down a rabbit hole for atsuhina. yes, it’s long, but you are so enraptured by the scenes and the feelings for each character that time will fly by and you’re already at the ending and you’re left with the same satisfaction of eating a full course meal made by your grandma. her writing is so immersive and you’re constantly thinking “oh god, what’s going to happen now?” do yourself a favor and PLEASE read her works

perennials -> writing that’s on another level. humor is top tier, the kind of humor that really bites and makes throw your head back as you laugh because they’re just that dang hilarious. I love it. you’ll have a great time reading their works. lots of haikyuu fics and they’re currently writing zelda: botw fics. truthfully, I’m not even into zelda, but I’m reading one of their fics because I love their writing so much… makes me wanna get a switch or watch a gameplay just to get into the lore lol also has tons of neat art that you should check out

wanderlustt -> another writer whose works are just so… wow. has such an amazing sense of humor and something I noticed about her works is that she really knows how control her tone? I don’t know if this makes sense, but one second I’ll be laughing and then she’ll do this careful tiptoe and guide you to the next scene and you’ll be so immersed in the situation. literally biting my fist as I read each line bc it’ll be from how she’s stringing her words so carefully and… it just feels so real dude omg please go read

alkhale -> I always recommend alkhale lmao I’m addicted to their writing. works flow super well and you’ll definitely find yourself reading well past midnight because you can’t put your phone down until you find out what happens in the next chapter. salute to alkhale for providing fantastic content! also on tumblr and ffnet, but I read their stuff on ao3

dia’s all hallow’s eve universe is god-tier. you cannot change my mind. it’s the perfect mix of romance with a rustic little village setting, and it always calms me to read it.

i think dest’s work has given me life. her jack frost taeyong au, if the moon tells you something, is really something out of a fairy tale. so are her seasons and sounds of summer aus. i don’t know how she does it but her writing is so clear and crisp and beautiful and it evokes so many emotions i thought i’d lost, honestly. her stories make me feel like a child again, eagerly reading a book of fairy tales for the umpteenth time.

golden hour has, is, and will always be one of my favorite stories i’ve ever read. the simple love in it is something just so absolutely profound and it makes me cry every time i read it. honestly, i think the story is something from the gods themselves - it’s so beautiful. it’s so wonderful. i love it so much.

Soooo just wanted to say I'm super excited for this FWOG update! I'm like bursting at the seams! This will be one of those that I reread over and over and over again. Loved the angst, development of their relationship, the supportive friends Alll of it. Do you read fics? Would you recommend any that you've read recently that hit you in the face????  ahh anon!! thank you for the kind words and I hope you enjoyed the update! sorry for the delay on this but I really wanted to take time and not forget stuff! as always I do have a “fic rec” tag for anything I read and enjoy if you want to check that out.

but to get more specific here are some “hit you in the face” (asjkslsj this is exactly how I’d describe it too) fics, aka my emotional support fics. a lot of these you’ve probably read if you read elu fic, and also a lot of them are one shots, but I’ve never done one of these lists myself so here you go:

gonna start (unsurprisingly) with nat @lepetitepeach and my fave elu series maybe it starts now. talk about getting punched in the face by a fic!! it’s heartwrenching and beautifully written and has literally made me gasp on multiple occasions. my favorite part is no one ever tried like you but please please read the whole thing. (my other fave fic from nat is la lune et le soleil but really I’d recommend anything from her!!)

next!! reduce it to a touch (but maybe we’re in love) by @lumierelovers. this fic!! it’s SO good really like I love all anna’s fics but this one has stuck with me and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve reread it. there’s just a softness and obliviousness to them in this that’s so heartwrenching and satisfying oooooof (also highly recommend illusion of bliss obvs and lumière, darling)

onto lauren!! in the hope that you’ll see me by @tawmlinsun I mean big oof. this fic is so tender and raw and beautiful and I, my god, I’ve read it a lot because it’s gorgeous just like everything lauren writes. another fave is if I can recognize real and I’m also highly invested in gold to you

next is maybe everything by @mauuvelesbian. I am not kidding when I say kath has this talent that makes it so I like feel my heart in my chest every time I read one of her fics. faves include: i think i’ll borrow tomorrow’s happiness for today, all your words in disguise, making me think like you’re mine, and of course the god tier coffee shop au

a catalogue of afternoons by @oheliotts hit me so hard that I still remember exactly where I was when I first read it. it’s beautiful, slightly angsty in the way you want and so so lovely and romantic and damn please read it!! (also PLEASE read things I forgot to tell you if you somehow haven’t yet because that’s a whole other brand of beautiful and heartwrenching and god tier writing)

em (@eliottamoureux)!!! look I ADORE alors laisse-moi tenir tes mains (dans les trous de mon pull)!!! it’s got that period-piece edge and em’s particular brand of soft and adorable elu that had me screaming and so so invested. it’s just such a gorgeous and unique fic and all I can say is please read it. (also pas peur is next on my list!! the pieces I’ve read are so beautiful - em really does eliott POV like no other - but I blame getting into this fandom late on why I’ve somehow not read it through yet)

in a shocking twist I’m gonna rec tempo by @surrealsunday!! I mean, look no further for the kind of heart pinching angsty shenanigans that have me re-reading again and again as well as incredible moments of tenderness and a level of humor that I’m very much in awe of. it’s become a fandom classic for a reason (also currently reading hollow edge but I have to catch up!!)

felt like it’s only fair to rec the fic that basically inspired me to start writing for skamfr. it’s a brief for the defense by @unquaintly and idk why but I had to like take a walk after reading this. just like everything she writes, the descriptions are so incredibly beautiful and I found myself feeling like I’d actually left this world while reading it. keep in mind I’d never seen pacific rim so I had no idea what I was getting into and it still floored me so…

and finally the last thing I hear at night (and the first thing in the morning)…I just this fic really hit me in the feels with it’s understanding and romance and gorgeous writing and jfc I return to it when I need a serotonin boost truly. like it hit me in the face but I thanked it for that, you know?? anyway, please read

quick guide to HS shit i’ve written

The Eurydice Suite: Complete, 97,000 words. DaveKat, Rosemary, and others. A massive, sprawling Inception fusion fic, in which everyone is related to the dream extraction business. The Strider-Lalondes have a reputation for being the top tier agents until Dirk fucking traps himself in his own subconsciousness. To get him out, everyone has to form a Superteam to dive into his mind. Very, very Strilonde centric, with a lot of Karkat and Kanaya. Probably the most cinematic thing I have written. Major themes are the perils of codependence, of defining yourself by what you do, and of the problems with being married to your work.

A Spark, A Flame, A Fire: Complete, 56,000 words. DirkJake. Authorized sequel to @dirkar’s A House Built, in which Jake is a resigned ambassador living in Derse to appease the melancholic, vengeful whims of Prince Dirk. Things get extremely complicated by political intrigue, slowly kindling emotions between Jake and the entire Dersian royal family, and some twisty plot machinations. Jake-centric, but heavily focused on all the Alphas and the Derse Dreamers. major themes are struggling with duty and sacrificing yourself for the bigger picture, and when those things have to fall to the wayside. Probably the cleanest, best story I’ve done on a technical level, and one I would most rec of my shit.

pump your veins with gushing gold: Complete, 55,000 words. DirkJake. Deeply self-indulgent modern fantasy AU in which Dirk is a wanderlustful tourist trying to lose himself in disparate cities, and Jake is a summer fae boy who finds him instead. Heavy on kink elements with a strong focus on examining the twisted relationship Dirk has with self-control, and what he’s capable of. Lots of amorality and fae manipulation and magical hypnotics. Also, a frankly fucking ridiculous amount of sex. Definitely not for everyone but hopefully a fun read for people into dubious shit like I am.

chamomile, rose water, and other unlikely intoxicants: Complete, 86,000 words. DirkJake. Another twisted fairy tale, this time a somewhat uncomfortable mediation on the Fable of the Year King and Dirk Strider’s... resilience in the face of certain death, and well as Jake’s raw incandescent determination. Fairly fucking entrenched in bullshit made up domestic magic and hardcore Hurt/Comfort. Could be reinterpreted as a protracted “fuck you” to seasonal affective disorder and way depression steals time from people. Also, probably the most balls to the wall happiest ending I’ve ever written.

you can only take what you can carry to the edge of the sea: In progress, currently 63K, will probably come close to 100K upon completion. DirkJake, heavily Alpha-centric. Jane, Dirk, and Roxy are a magi-scientific research team that gets wind of a hidden, intensely magical island that’s steeped in old ruins, mysteries, and an amphibious almost-merman who’s never met people before in his life. It’s a fucking TRIP, with a lot of xeno stuff as well as deep dives into magical society bullshit, particularly revolving around Dirk’s status as a magically inert “noble.” Very much a kink grab bag and not for the, uh, unadventurous. Will be continued soon.
