Crafting Brilliance: Elevate Your Jewellery with Professional Photoshoots
A jewellery product photoshoot isn't just about capturing images—it's about telling a compelling story that resonates with your customers. Each piece of jewellery holds an essence of elegance and sophistication that requires the perfect light, focus, and setting to fully showcase its beauty. A professional photoshoot can help encapsulate this allure, elevating your products from simple accessories to works of art. With the right approach, every detail—from the sparkle of a gem to the curve of a metalwork design—can be highlighted to enhance the desirability of your collection.
Why invest in a professional jewellery product photoshoot?
Choosing a professionaljewellery product photoshoot means investing in years of industry-specific experience, a modern studio setting, and high-end equipment. These elements combined can make a remarkable difference in how your jewellery is perceived.
Professional product photographers are adept at understanding the unique needs of each jewellery piece, be it a diamond necklace or a gold ring. They know how to place each item in the spotlight, capture the minute details, and highlight the craftsmanship that sets your products apart.
Moreover, a high-quality studio setting provides the right control over factors like lighting and background, which can significantly influence the final result. The use of top-notch equipment ensures that your products are captured with optimum precision and clarity. While this might seem like a significant upfront cost, the return on investment can far outweigh these expenses. High-quality images can increase customer trust and perceived value, drive more sales, and ultimately contribute to a stronger brand image. Therefore, a professional photoshoot is not just an expense—it's a strategic investment in your brand's success.

But let us tell you that every new thing, in the beginning, brings with it apprehensions, hesitation, inhibition, and insecurity.
Questions like is there any risk in digital gold? Is digital gold better than physical gold? What are the benefits of digital gold? keep hovering if you decide to take the step ahead in investing in digital gold. If you plan to invest in digital gold but are stopped by the misconception surrounding the same, let us take you through some digital gold facts and bust those myths.
Myth 1- Online Gold isn’t Pure Gold
Spare8 gets you the purest digital gold you can ask for. All these companies own goodwill and offer no risk. So, when you buy digital gold you are in fact buying it with no impurity risks as the product is high in liquidity. Spare8 has partnered with Augumont and Paytm to purchase the digital gold. 80s style jewellery product photography
Statement Necklaces, Bold Golds, Radical Look
The eighties was a strong decade for style and it produced some groundbreaking products and innovations including the Walkman, personal computer, the space shuttle, soap-on-a-rope and of course, the mullet… Ok, so not everything was cool but the 80’s certainly had a strong influence on the decades to follow. For this creative still life jewellery photography shoot I channelled some of this style, giving a playful nod to this iconic era. Utilising strong lighting, still life styling, vibrant colours and vintage props, I’d say we nailed it…
Neon coloured shapes with a grid-patterned block background work with the bold statement jewellery pieces, creating a fun and eye-catching look.
The image below is a nod to the famous 80s game Tetris and although the jewellery perhaps isn’t the best fit for the image it still works as a playful and attention grabbing jewellery photograph.
The final darker image on the left of this group was based on those VR-type graphics and colours which were all the rage in the 80’s, again featuring the grid pattern and a vibrant multi-colour surface which ties it all together as a group
The overall success of the jewellery photography is a mixture of a detailed but very flexible brief and a well-selected props to bring ideas to life.  Next, quickly executing the shots and style we liked whilst maintaining both quality and  an eye-catching style. Perfect for online marketing like websites and social media where a decent amount of shots are required to make it cost effective for the client.
All the Jewellery Photography was completed in our brand new creative photography studio in South East London. Further details on the new studio space will follow and address details can be found on my studio page.  Of course, you can always just get in contact to discuss your next photography project. We look forward to welcoming to our new studio soon!

* an in-depth look into guzmán.
BASIC INFORMATION
Full name: Andreas Guzmán. Andreas is greek, meaning “strong, manly” whereas Guzmán is a castilian surname referring to a village in the region. It has no other meaning, although some sources claim it means “Good man”, referring the Visigoth words Gus man. Moreover, there’s the comparison to the Jewish surname Gusman, which is an occupational name for a metal worker.  As a whole, the name “Andreas Guzmán” can be taken to mean: strong and brave good man.  Pronunciation: An-drAE-as Gooz-mAAn. Strictly a Spanish pronunciation. Nickname(s): Call him Guzmán in general, if you’re unsure. X if you’re sure. Guz if you’re close, but you might get stabbed anyways. He does not accept being called by his first name -- he will ignore or correct you at best, get violent at worst. And he certainly does not tolerate nicknames surrounding his first name. Birthdate: August 20 Age: 39 Zodiac: Leo -- This fixed sign is known for its ambition and determination, but above all, Leos are celebrated for their remarkable bravery. In tarot, Leo is represented by the “strength” card, which depicts the divine expression of physical, mental, and emotional fortitude. Fearless optimists who refuse to accept failure, Leos will find their deep wells of courage grow as they mature. Gender: Cis man Pronouns: He + him. Romantic orientation: Grey-Biromantic -- it is a topic of dispute whether Guzmán is capable of romantic fixation, or feelings at all for that matter. The current stance is that he is, but it requires a lot of work and it does not happen with just anyone.  More over sometimes he can be described as romance-repulsed, since he actively does not pursue romantic relationships and views them as weaknesses that can be exploited. He would know this, since he often exploits it in others. Sexual orientation: Bisexual -- he has no strict preference toward any gender, but he has been with people of all genders. Nationality: N/A -- Guzman will claim to either be American, Venezuelan or Chilean. Ethnicity: Chilean. Current location: Wynwood, Miami. Living conditions: He lives in an apartment building that he owns and rents (sometimes entirely for free) out to other mutants of low income. His own living quarters are big and comfortable and clean, almost sterile in presentation -- 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a spacious kitchen and livingroom, a study. He has a second safehouse at an undisclosed location in the city.
BACKGROUND NOTES
Birthplace: N/A. Hometown: N/A. Social Class: he certainly doesn’t file taxes for how much money he has, but he has the finances of the upper middle class and acts as though he is lower middle class. Educational achievements: N/A -- at best, he has a Ph. D in mathematics. At worst, he’s a high school dropout. Father: Edgardo Guzmán -- deceased. Mother: Rosario Guzmán -- deceased. Sibling(s): Alondra Guzmán -- deceased. Birth order: First born. Pets: He has a penchant for feeding strays, but does not commit to pets. Previous relationships: this he prefers not to disclose. Arrests: his rap sheet is spotless, to the point that it feels like it’s been wiped clean, without so much as a parking ticket. Prison time: None on record, but on his own account, Guzmán will occasionally recall that he was in a Brazilian max-sec prison between ages 27-29 for murder of six police men, after which he proceeded to escape.
OCCUPATION & INCOME
Current occupation: he’s a crime kingpin and head of a sizable cartel, but for the IRS he’s a business owner and landlord. Dream occupation: honestly? President of his own country. He’s working toward that. Past job(s): he will tell you any number of truths and lies regarding this topic, among which we have: mathematics professor, CIA data analyst, CIA test subject, killer for hire, smuggler, thief.   Spending habits: anything he sees fit to help to his cause, he has no problem spending. He does not care about money, viewing it as a tool, a means rather than an end. This all being said, he’s excellent at money management.  In debt?: No, but a lot of people are indebted to him. Most valuable possession: possessions are a hindrance. He does not care about anything material.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Physical strength: Above Average | Average | Below Average -- Notes: Guzman exercises regularly (every single day) and packs a surprising amount of strength in his arms and legs, as well as enviable core strength. It is not his most flashy physical feature, he does not have a defined body but his muscles are solid and functional. Once he gets to it, he can do some good damage. Speed: Above Average | Average | Below Average -- Notes: he can run and do so pretty fast but it is not what he’s best at. His reflexes are more than decent, though. Intelligence: Above Average | Average | Below Average -- Notes: Guzmán has basically nigh-peak human intelligence. As said above, he’s very good at handling complex, abstract theoretical concepts and handling vast amounts of information information; strategizing, debate, intuitive and deductive reasoning, etc. He has extensive knowledge of math and biology (especially genetics and bioengineering) as well as neuroscience and psychology, and he’s constantly learning more about the subjects not just for practical use but for his own personal enjoyment. Accuracy: Above Average | Average | Below Average -- Notes: he’s more than a little knowleagable about gun usage and he’s a really good shot. If you’re running from him and he happens to have a gun, you better have a damn good pair of legs or hide quickly, because he will most likely shoot you. Agility: Above Average | Average | Below Average -- Notes: he’s capable of climbing and a certain degree of free running with effortless ease. Stamina: Above Average | Average | Below Average -- Notes: it’s not bad for his age and he’s fit/healthy but it could certainly be better and all that smoking does take its toll. Teamwork: Guzmán is not really fit for anything but a leadership position. He is domineering and abrasive and the only way he can accept to take a backseat is if he has a generous amount of respect toward the people in charge -- and if so, he might be able to take orders, but only if he sees them as intelligent choices. Otherwise, he will question the authority and routinely challenge it, poking holes into their logic and plans. If he is the leader, though, he’s very good at working multiple details and elements into efficient wholes. People that follow him tend to, if not trust him, respect him because of how capable he is. Talents/hobbies: he reads a lot; his apartment is cluttered with piles and piles of books, many of which are technical in nature. Plays chess and cards. Knows how to play the piano more than adequately. Exercises regularly and trains in H2H combat. Does crosswords and sudokus. Swims. Plots the fall of humanity.  Shortcomings: speed and stamina. Guzmán can run fast for short speeds but can get tired relatively quickly due to his age, habit of smoking and joint problems as product of past altercations. He also does not work well in settings where he is not in charge. He is also unforgiving and unmerciful and if you wrong him it’s pointless to try to appeal to reason with him. Can be controlling. Can have difficulty expressing emotional concerns and being genuine. Languages spoken: English, Spanish, Russian, conversational Chinese. Others: ASL, morse code. Drive?: yes. He’s pretty good at driving all kinds of vehicles and motorcycles. Knows how to drive boats and some planes too. Jump-start a car?: yes. Change a flat tyre?: yes. Ride a bicycle?: yes. Swim?: yes. He enjoys swimming. Play an instrument?: Piano. Play chess?: yes, pretty well. Knows how to beat most in less than three moves. Braid hair?: Yes. Mostly in the context of what he knew to do for his younger sister. Little beyond that.  Tie a tie?: Yes. Pick a lock?: Yes. Cook?: Yes.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE & CHARACTERISTICS
Faceclaim: S. Cabrera Eye colour: Brown Hair colour: Brown Hair type/style/length: thick, long-medium length, wavy, a little unruly -- reference. Glasses/contacts?: Reading glasses. Dominant hand: Born left handed, but can use both. Height: 5′11 Weight: 176 lbs Build: lean, muscular especially in arms and legs, undefined chest, hairy. References: one, two. Exercise habits: every day, at least thirty minutes. Skin tone: Light brown, sun-kissed. Tattoos:  an squared circle between his shoulder blade (x), the monas hieroglyphica on his right bicep (x), the sigil of chaos, in the back of his left hand (x), a circled dot in the pad of his left index finger (x). Piercings: none. Marks/scars:  5 cm cut on his left cheek. Stab wounds scars on his abdomen. Rough hands product of manual labor. Clothing style:  alternates between casual (sweaters, jeans, boots, white or black shirts, guayaberas) and formal (suits) depending on the need. Can look either well groomed or scruffy, whatever is necessary. Jewellery: can sometimes be seen wearing chains either of gold or silver. Allergies: none. Diet: primarily vegetable based, with fish and chicken as preferred meats. Seldom eats beef or pork. Eats carbs in the form of bread and corn based doughs. Relatively healthy.  Physical ailments: knees ache. Suffers from occasional paints from the left hip from when he was shot there once.
PSYCHOLOGY
MBTI type: ENTJ -- ENTJs are strategic, organized and possess natural leadership qualities. They are master coordinators that can effectively give direction to groups. They are able to understand complicated organizational situations and quick to develop intelligent solutions. ENTJs are outspoken and will not hesitate to speak of their plans for improvement. They are decisive and value knowledge, efficiency and competence. Enneagram type: Type 8w6 SP/SX -- KEY MOTIVATIONS:  Want to be self-reliant, to prove their strength and resist weakness, to be important in their world, to dominate the environment, and to stay in control of their situation. Moral Alignment: Chaotic evil --  referred to as the “Destroyer” or “Demonic” alignment. Characters of this alignment tend to have no respect for rules, other people’s lives, or anything but their own desires, which are typically selfish and cruel. They set a high value on personal freedom, but do not have any regard for the lives or freedom of other people. They do not work well in a group, as they resent being given orders, and usually only behave themselves out of fear of punishment. It is not compulsory for a Chaotic Evil character to be constantly performing sadistic acts just for the sake of being evil, or constantly disobeying orders just for the sake of causing chaos. Temperament: Choleric -- Someone with a pure choleric temperament is usually a goal-oriented person. Choleric people are very savvy, analytical, and logical. Extremely practical and straightforward, they aren't necessarily good companions or particularly friendly. Element: Fire + Air. Emotional stability: Very emotionally stable. Seldom gets sad, angry, or caught up in otherwise strong or potent emotions. Very driven, seldom loses focus or attention in his goals and day to day affairs. Introvert or Extrovert? Action-oriented Extrovert. Guzmán enjoys being around people only on the practical sense, if it’s helping him toward the progress of his ambitions and goals. Obsession(s): mutant supremacy :/ conspiracy theories. Power. Money only in the context of achieving more power.  Compulsion(s): whenever he has to sharpen a knife in his kitchen, he ends up sharpening them all. And he can’t leave a book halfway through a chapter. He has to end the chapter, so next time he sits down to read he’s starting through another. Phobia(s): none. Addiction(s): Mind games. Drug use: regularly smokes cigars or cigarettes. Alcohol use: mostly will have a glass of whiskey every few nights, no more than that. Prone to violence?: Yes. Prone to crying?: No Believe in love at first sight?: No.
MANNERISMS
Accent: faint accent that could be pinned as that of a native spanish speaker. Speech quirks: he can get pretty talkative when things come down to it. Occasionally, he will interrupt his monologuing to ask if the other person understands what he’s saying. Hobbies: elaborated above: reading, chess, crossword, sudoku, playing intruments, working out, swimming. Habits: stroking/scratching his beard, fiddling idly with the things that are in his hands, opening and closing his fists deliberately. Nervous ticks: does not give away when he’s nervous. Drives/motivations: power-seeking, revenge, general mayhem and destruction. Fears: none in the immediate sense. Guzman is not scared of death, of things going wrong, of pain. He’s died before, things have gone wrong before, he’s been tortured before. Visceral fears have no hold over him. His disquiet stems more from existential concerns.  Sense of humour?: decent. Although, when he’s serious, he does not tolerate disrespect and jokes/flippant demeanors are considered disrespect.  Do they curse often?: not really. Will usually only curse to drive a certain point home.
FAVORITES
Animal: wolves and all matter of felines. Beverage: whiskey and rum, water. Book: he cannot choose! Colour: warm tones. Food: rice with chicken and beans, arepas, etc. Flower: does not care. Gem: does not care. Mode of transportation: car or motorcycle. Scent: cinnamon, coffee, freshly baked bread. Sport: soccer, baseball. Weather: sunny. Vacation destination: does not care for the concept, though as a rule he prefers warmer climates.
ATTITUDES
Greatest dream goals: for mutants to be in power, and for him to be in charge of them. Greatest fear: the eradication of the mutant race. Most at ease when: he is in control of the situation at play, when things are going according to plan, when someone has reaffirmed his loyalty to him in vital ways.  Least as ease when: there are variables that stop him from being fully in control, or he doesn’t know key pieces of information. Worst possible thing that could happen: dying before seeing a good portion of his plans materialized. It would be the worst, but it would be mostly inconvenient, really.  Biggest achievement: helped (through direct and indirect ways) make discrimination against mutants illegal in Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Perú. Participated in the assassinations of authoritarian figures and anti-mutant politicians in South and Central America. Biggest regret: does not have one -- yet.

Task 2 Pre-Production: Plan Your Photographic Shoot
Write about who you will shoot and why. What is their story, what are the visual clues you will use in your image.
I am going to shoot my classmate Nikki because I am very interested in her choice of style and her different, brightly coloured outfits. I met Nikki when I first started the HND course and having become friends, I have come to learn that she has already completed a degree course prior to the HND. Nikki always wears fabulous outfits and during our shoots I will use her colourful choice of clothing and hair accessories as the visual clues in my images.
Tumblr media
Plan and agree a shoot with your model (create 3 possible dates for shoots) in the college studio and arrange the clothes, hair, makeup preparation and props you will need for the first date in the studio.
Shoot Dates:
Friday 6th November 10-12
Friday 13th November 10-12
Friday 20th November 10-12
Nikki will do her own hair and makeup for the first shoot and we will bring in some props such as colourful or patterned handbags with some gold or bright jewellery.

Libraries are for Meetings
Master List —– Chapter 8
Chapter 9 - Life is a Book
Warnings: negative thoughts, death mentioned, memories of trauma
Summary: E prepares for their day as the anniversary draws nearer and Virgil thinks about the past for the first time in a while. .
Word count: 3832
Note: reading on mobile can remove the paragraphing sometimes. Use desktop site or visit my Ao3 page if it bothers you as much as it bothers me.

Heat. Screams. Burning. Pulling. Crying.
“E! Jason!”
“Are they breathing?”
“They’re breathing. You need to cool them down and stop the bleeding; I’m going back.”
“Jason, don’t!”
“Oskar hasn’t come out. I’m going back. Just take care of E, Sasha. I’ll be back”.
Heat. Screams. Burning. Crying. Sirens. Screams. Screams. Scream.
Eyes snapping open, E gasped for breath as their heart raced from the memory. Shaking hands tightened around their blankets and pulled them close to their chest as they started timing their breaths and grounding their senses in reality. It took 10 minutes for them to be able to sit up; muscles stiff from being tensed up so long. They slowly stood and made their way over to their dressing table mirror; sighing as they took in their unfiltered appearance - head shaven and maintained around the leathery skin on their scalp, red scar lines tracing the skin under their left eye and cheek. Those features didn’t bother E anymore; they were nothing but a minor inconvenience, the mounds on their chest were another story. Despite sleeping in an oversized shirt, they could still see the fabric protruding out slightly; and E squeezed their eyes shut as their mind, body and soul fought over their identity.
E hated mornings like this; just not being sure of their gender. They preferred the days they felt just feminine or just masculine; those days were easy compared to days like today, when they just didn’t know.
Their stomach growled in hunger, snapping them out of their thoughts. Avoiding the mirror, E slipped on a green hoodie and yellow beanie before heading downstairs to greet their roommates. Sophie and Xander were just leaving as E reached the bottom of the stairs, getting a brief farewell before the front door closed.
“Morning, E!” Sam called from the kitchen, popping out with two plates of scrambled eggs. “I hoped you were up. I have a massive favour to ask.”
“Shoot.” Taking a seat at the table, E watched as Sam repeatedly tucked their long fringe behind their ear and sat down.
“I have a big presentation today and I was wondering if you could do my hair and make-up. You do such a good job and I really want to make a good impression during the presentation. Can you spare some time, please?”
“Sure, your make up is an easy job.”
Sam beamed, “Thank you so much. I’ll pay you for this of course.”
“Don’t bother,” E muttered, slipping another spoonful of eggs into their mouth, “breakfast is payment enough.”
As soon as their plates were cleaned, E invited Sam to their room and set to work on their makeup for the day. The work was a good distraction, though looking at Sam’s red streaks gave them flashes of flames and they took a moment to refocus before continuing. It was going to be a long day of held emotions if the morning was anything to go by.
“You had a nightmare, didn’t you?”
The questioned stunned E so much, they almost poked Sam’s eye with the liquid liner tip.
“What? Where’d you get that idea?”
“You’ve been off all morning, Ethan.” The name sent a calm through Ethan’s mind and the world seemed to get a little clearer; Sam was always good at picking which name they needed to hear. “Are you going to stay with your family this weekend?”
With a sigh, he nodded and continued working.
“I’m staying with the library crew tonight and then I’ll be with my aunt the rest of the weekend.”
“That’s good. Those library guys will look out for you. Is your sister going too?”
“Sasha doesn’t really associate with them anymore,” straightening, Ethan moved to finish styling Sam’s hair. “I think the guilt is too much for her; I mean, it was her party, but Oskar is just as bad too.”
“That sucks. I know Sasha and Jason were good friends. It’s a shame she couldn’t have stayed connected with Logan at least.”
“Yeah, well, they’ll see each other this weekend for sure.” Moving around, Ethan inspected their work and made a few small adjustments. “My aunt is catering for the Reels memorial again and giving them the diner for most of the day. I hope she lets it go after this year. Honestly, the whole action is a little over the top and selfish.”
“Everyone deals with guilt in their own way, E. Don’t knock your aunt too much.”
“Yeah, I know.” Stepping back, Ethan gestured to the mirror, “all done.”
Sam beamed at their braided hair and soft silver eyes that matched their blouse. “It’s amazing.”
“You’re going to knock ‘em dead today.”
“Thanks, Ethan.” Sam stood and blew a kiss in his direction. “Message me if you need anything, okay?”
With a nod, Sam headed off to collect their things while Ethan grabbed their binder and headed into the bathroom for a shower.
Locking the door behind them, Ethan headed for the bus stop to make their way into town. They had a short, blond wig with gold eye liner; paired with a white speckled, black shirt with dress pants and shoes. Black felt like an appropriate colour for the day, as they made their way to the theatre to do some special effects makeup tests for a new production. A few years ago, Ethan never would have thought they’d be pursuing a career in makeup, but now they couldn’t see themselves doing anything different. Turns out having your face scarred was a good motivator for pursuing a new career in makeup artistry. Taking a seat on the bus he hoped today’s work would provide a reasonable distraction and make the day pass quickly until it was time to go to the library.
  ********************
The moment the morning Librarian, Tate, officially opened the library, Virgil raced inside to begin boxing up his gaming system. He had sent an apology message to Ben earlier but was yet to receive any form of reply, which had him worried beyond belief. Part of him hoped that the threats against the library were fake and he would simply come after him, but he wasn’t about to take any risks. His only hope was that Pete was in a giving mood and had some more items for him to fix.
Air fresh, Virgil wished he had his thicker hoodie on as his deep violet jacket was doing nothing to stop the wind slicing through him. Pushing through the doors of Pete’s Pawn Shop, he was thankful for the reprieve from the chilling winds.
“Virgil!” The rotund man boomed from the back of the store. “How’s my junior fixer going today?”
“Fine, thanks, Pete.” Reaching the store counter, Virgil placed the box down and put on his best act of confidence. “Got this relic back in working order. Perfect for selling to a hardcore gamer with plenty of money from their mothers’ basement.”
Pete laughed and opened the box to pull out Virgil’s meticulous report of what he had done and how the system ran. Half of it was nonsense to the man, but he pretended to read it all over for the sake of professionalism.
“Seems you did a fair bit on this thing?”
“It had a fair amount of wear and tear from neglect and general ageing.” Virgil assured, pulling out the controller to show off. “I cleaned all the pieces so it’s almost as responsive as any modern console. Considering its age, and former condition, this thing runs as smooth as anything. Collectors would be foolish to walk past a piece like this.”
“Okay, okay, Virge, I see what you’re saying.” Pete turned to his computer and started typing away. “You want fair price for your work, I understand.”
“I need more than fair, Pete.” Virgil turned and leant his back against the counter and looked around the store. “I need to be in the green zone and make our partnership worthwhile.”
“Alright, kid.” Pete clicked away from the search screens he had just used to double check the systems value and opened the register to retrieve some cash. “How about $50 for your efforts?”
Looking sideways at the money on the counter, Virgil shook his head. “That’s barely covering the labour and parts, Pete. I paid you $20 for this thing in the first place and it was only a dust collector at that point. Make it $120.”
A smile spread across Pete’s bearded face and he laid more notes on the counter. “$60 and then you’ve got $40 in the green.”
“Not good enough,” turning to face the man, Virgil leant his hands on the counter and met Pete’s gaze. “I need more green for parts; make it worth it.”
“$75 a better colour?”
“$100 would put me in a better place.”
“Why don’t we settle on $85 and I’ll throw in a busted blender for free?”
Slamming his hand down on the money, Virgil thrust his other hand toward Pete. “Deal.”
Accepting the hand, Pete gave it a firm shake before closing the till and grabbing the box down from the counter. “Go take your choice of appliance from out the back, kid. That’ll be an easy 20 for ya later.”
“Thanks Pete.”
Pocketing the money, Virgil quickly headed to the storeroom to assess his possible options. Pawn shops were a sense of comfort for the young man, a pleasant memory of much of his childhood spent in his grandparent’s store where he learnt how electronics worked from the employees. While his grandmother managed the jewellery aspect of the store, Virgil spent his days working with his grandfather’s tech-group; watching them pull apart and piece together everything from toasters to PCs. Losing his grandparents, and the store, was the first domino that fell in a series of events that transformed his childhood to a less than pleasant memory.
Pete appeared in the doorway and Virgil turned to give him a deflated look.
“Have you got anything a bit more substantial?”
“Sorry, Virge, this is all the stock I have. Phil came in and took my last PC yesterday.”
After sending a silent curse to Phil, Virgil grabbed a small handheld game that seemed in reasonable condition and followed Pete back out.
“Look, I know you prefer your other guys to do your client jobs, but can you please give me a call if you get anything in that you’re happy for me to work on. I really need the money.”
“I can’t promise anything, but,” The man ran a hand over his head and took a long look at the young mans fragile form, “if I get anything coming through I’ll give you a call.”
“Thanks, Pete. I really appreciate it.” Virgil headed for the door; eager to get back to his office and start on his new project.
“Take care of yourself,” the door closed, and Pete sighed, “lord knows you look like you need it.”
  ****************
The library was uncharacteristically busy for a Friday morning; a constant flow of studiers and families pulling books from shelves and engaging in whispered discussions. Headphones blocked out the sounds outside of his office, as Virgil inspected the disassembled the handheld. Slouched in his chair, Virgil stared at the collection of parts and tried to mentally work out which parts were going to be salvageable. Lost in thought and music, the vibration of his phones alarm had him jolting out of his chair in shock; expecting the vibration to signal a message from Ben. Though his heart still raced with fear, once his mind comprehended the time, fear was replaced with excitement. Tate took notice of the unusual spring in the cleaner’s step as he left the library; a smile on his face for the first time in months.
The wind was still cold and unkind as Virgil made his way to the university; pulling his hood up to shield his ears. He had exchanged his jacket for a heavy black hoodie with white ringed designs, which was proving to be a better shield against the cold. Heart pounding with excitement despite the quiet whispers of doubt; Virgil wasn't going to let those voices stop him today. Today was his day. He was making the choice to see Logan. It was his decision, and he was going to enjoy it.
Virgil's throat instantly tightened as his music was cut off for an incoming phone call, and he quickly slipped into an ally to answer it discretely. Relief hit hard when he saw the caller ID was Katie.
"What's up, Reels?"
"Is that an echo I hear, Virgil? You better not still be at the library." Katie sounded irritated and Virgil rolled his eyes.
"No, Mum. I slipped into an ally to escape the wind."
"Oh." He could hear Katie clearing her throat and shuffle around on the other end of the line. "Sorry. I thought you were hiding from, Logan. That was a dick move on my part."
"It's fine, Katie, but I'm going to be late if you don't get to the point." "Yeah. Sorry. I was wondering if you wanted to help me set up for the meeting this afternoon, instead of your normal clean. That way you won't miss any hours; unless you've already got plans."
"Nah, that's fine." He hid a sigh of relief at the prospect of keeping his hours up, and mentally adjusted his money situation. "Starting at my normal time?"
"Yes, please."
"Too easy. I'll see you then."
"Have fun with Lo-gan."
"Bye, Reels."
Virgil hung up the phone as Katie erupted into giggles; looking at the time and quickening his pace to make sure he met Logan on time. Memories shifted to the front of his mind as he got closer, and he slowly increased the volume of his music to overpower the thoughts.
  ********************
Logan had never been one to watch the clock, but today he could not stop himself from glancing between the loud analogue clock on the wall and his watch. The professor’s voice faded from his hearing, drowned out by the ticking of the clock edging closer to the session being over. Restless fingers fidgeted with his pens until finally the group was dismissed and Logan packed up faster than he had ever done before.
Reaching the bottom of the stairs, his heart sank when he didn't see Virgil waiting outside. Coat tucked over his arm in the rush, the wind sliced across his uncovered arms as he stood outside the  building; a still figure in the flow of exiting students. As the crowd thinned, Logan turned towards the car park with his heart sinking. In that moment, he consciously realised just how excited he had been to see Virgil again. Though he had known he was enjoying their company, Logan hadn't been willing to admit the extent of his feelings. Despite hardly knowing anything about him, he felt that Virgil was more than a simple acquaintance; he was already a friend.
 "Logan!"
Logan's head jerked around at the sound of Virgil's voice and he was quick to spot the thin man waving as he made his way up the path. Making no effort to hide his sigh of relief, Logan waved back and smiled.
"Didn't think I ditched you, did ya?" Virgil beamed, slipping his headphones off and proceeding to slip them into his bag.
"I will admit," Logan chuckled and fiddled with his bag strap, "that was my initial conclusion. I am glad you proved me wrong."
"I'll try not to make a habit of it." Virgil naturally began walking beside Logan as they headed towards the carpark; as if it was a regular routine they had. "How was class?"
"Very uneventful," he practically grumbled the reply, "as most lectures have become. I prefer opportunities to complete hands on activities and research tasks. Listening to someone drone on for an hour is beyond me - What's so funny?"
No longer hiding it, Virgil openly laughed and nudged Logan's shoulder, "You never cease to amaze me, Lo."
"What do you mean?"
"You've been arrested, you're pretty much a pro-athlete, and you hate lectures just as much as any  regular person."
"It may surprise you to know," Logan reached up and adjusted his glasses with a smirk, "but I am a regular person."
To the untrained eye, the pair seemed like old friends as they laughed their way into the car park and stepped up to Logan's surprisingly close parking spot. Depositing bags in the back of the car, they slid into their respective seats after confirming pizza was the best lunch option and Virgil plugged the order into his phone for them to pick up on the way. After exiting the car park, Logan steered the conversation away from himself and tried to earn some more from Virgil.
"So, what did you get up to this morning, Virgil?"
Virgil shrugged and slid his phone back into his pocket, "nothing much. Went down to the pawn shop to sell one gaming system and buy another. Nothing newsworthy or anything."
"On the contrary, I find your work fascinating. When did you learn all this stuff?"
"My grandparents owned a pawn shop and I spent a lot of time there when I was younger." A weight shifted on Virgil's chest as he spoke; but emotion still gripped at his throat slightly. "I learnt everything from my grandad and the fixers that worked for him."
"You are very lucky to have such a close relationship with your grandparents."
"Yeah, I was..." Head dropping, Virgil picked at his nails absently as he felt Logan sag into his seat.
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"It's okay. I got 13 years with them; that's more than some people get."
"True, but that doesn't make your feelings any less valid. It sounds like they had a significant influence on your childhood."
Straightening in his chair, Virgil raised his head to look ahead and compose himself as his throat constricted further.
"They were very much my childhood. I spent more time with them than either of my parents." Pausing to take a shaky breath, Virgil recalled their smiling faces the last time he had seen them. "They didn't deserve to die the way they did."
Brow furrowing, Logan chanced a glance at his passenger; question cautiously forming on his lips.
"May I ask what happened?"
Part of Virgil screamed for him to remain silent as he closed his eyes and leaned his head back on the headrest. He hadn't spoken to anyone about his grandparents since he stopped going to therapy; but part of him wanted to tell Logan. Logan had already told him so much about his past and it only seemed fair that he did the same to some degree.
Eyes remaining closed, Virgil slowly spoke; each word painfully tearing at his soul to leave his mouth.
"They went missing. Just didn't open the shop one day. Vanished for two weeks along with my Dad." A single tear threatened to slip from his closed eye, and Virgil took a shaky breath in and forced the emotion away. "They came back and I got to see them one last time before... Before they were..."
Pulling into a parking space near the pizza shop, Logan placed a hand on Virgil's shoulder and gave it a comforting squeeze. Virgil turned away and sighed; unable to find the words to continue.
"You don't have to say anymore if you don't want to, Virgil. It's okay." Logan assured and felt blindly in his centre console for a pack of tissues to offer.
Virgil opened his eyes and turned to face the man beside him; hazel eyes as soft and comforting as the hand on his shoulder. His thoughts froze for a moment as he found himself lost in Logan's comforting features; pained memories present but duller with those eyes on him and hand lifting to offer a pack of facial tissues. Finally, he was able to swallow the lump in his throat and nodded gratefully; taking the tissues and tearing his gaze away so he didn't cry.
"I'm going to get the pizza," the drivers side door opened as Logan prepared to leave. "Why don't we change the subject upon my return."
He carefully closed the door, after Virgil gave him an affirming nod, and headed around the corner to collect the pizza they had ordered. Though Logan felt guilty for bringing up the topic in the first place, he was thankful that he had. The conversation gave him the smallest glimpse into Virgil's past, and he was comforted by the fact he seemed just as determined to hold his emotions to his chest as he was. It was a welcomed change that intrigued him greatly. Everyone Logan had previously befriended had been such  open books, easily talking about themselves and their past; it was overwhelming and slightly boring. On the other hand, Virgil was a choose your own adventure mystery novel that required careful questioning and consideration to find any answers. Their friendship may have happened in a single afternoon, but Logan was now slightly hopeful they could work through their novel-like lives and make a relationship of some kind.
"It's too soon to make judgements like that." Logan reminded himself, "I don't even know if Virgil would be interested in a relationship, let alone one with me."
After collecting the food, Logan headed back towards the car; pausing for a moment when it first came into view. The man in the passenger seat looked so peaceful; head resting back in the slightly reclined chair and breeze shifting his hair from the opened window. If his hands weren't preoccupied, and it was less creepy, Logan would have taken a photo; Patton would have in his position. In the moments before reaching the car, Logan made a decision. I rather selfish and impulsive decision considering the circumstances.
Sliding into the car, Virgil stirred from his light sleep and gratefully took the boxes from Logan's hands. With his hands free, Logan looked down at the rings on his fingers; a simple black band on his right middle finger and a silver band on the index finger of the same hand. While Virgil was focused on inspecting the pizza, Logan slipped the silver band off and changed it to his left hand. The action would have seemed foolish and unnecessary to an onlooker, but for Logan it was a sign of moving on. The ring was originally a symbol of friendship given to him by Jason, but then he changed the rings placement, making a mock proposal out of the event.
"I want this on your right hand now because  right here, right now, I am yours. For now, and forever. And perhaps, one day, if all goes well, I might move it again."
Smiling sadly to himself, Logan started the car and stared at his hands on the steering wheel for a moment longer before pulling away.

Sorry I dropped off the edge of the Earth for a while. Part of this chapter just wasn’t working out for me and I kept leaving it and coming back to delete and start again. I’ve got a holiday break coming up again soon, so I’m hoping to get out of this slump I’m in and write a fair bit and get ahead again.
Also, if you haven’t already, you should check out the art @the-pastel-peach did for Chapter 7. Logan and Virgil look so good and she did a great job at capturing the emotion on their faces as Logan tells Virgil how he met Jason. I just love it.
Another side note because I put this on Tumblr: I’m no longer in immediate fire danger anymore; though it seems every couple of days the fire level goes from ‘high’ to ‘extreme’ (it goes well with the critical water levels). All good though. I got to do the virtual meet and greet with Thomas the other day right after I heard the sirens of the fire truck heading out. He was so sweet though as I had a slightly ‘panicked’ moment at the start of our time (seriously, he knows how to quickly steer a conversation and take your mind off things).

CVM ILLE JEWELLERY is a genderless, sustainable and vegan jewellery brand.
Of ancient inspiration, and on the border between craft objects and fashion accessory, these are original and conscious pieces of high quality, fully made by hand in Paris.
In order to create in a emancipation from gender binarity, the MARIVS collection has been designed without stereotypes, and from sketches made by hand.
This allows us to rethink the traditional way of wearing jewels, to offer high-quality pieces for all genders. Moreover, the inclusiveness in the pieces of the MARIVS collection allows a tailored order system. Any piece can thus be modified on demand, which is a promise of our collection.
We are also working locally in a closed circuit in Paris, with skilled craftsmen·women.
This helps us to be in a designing and responsible consumption approach, respectful of the environment, humans and animals.
[FAQ]
1)      In what way is it sustainable ?
All of our pieces are fully handcrafted.
Each of them are in brass, gold or silver recycled all recycled from production scraps (makers, workshops, jewellers...), transformed in a closed circuit, then are 24-carat gold-gilded or gold-plated, also from recycling.
The MARIVS collection has 20 timeless pieces (including 3 evening pieces), thought to be anti-season. All our jewels are made to last in time, but can be repaired or replated at any time by us if needed.
All our packagings are composed of upcycled materials, an homemade engraved pellet, a sewn brown linen pouch, a folded carboard box with recycled cotton link, as well as homemade dried flowers upcycled from our shootings. During these shootings : the make-up used is vegan and cruelty-free, all our models wear second-hand & vintage clothes, and all our furnitures and objects used for our shootings are carefully found by us.
CVM ILLE is also in partnership with an innovative local startup specialised in the recovery of pollutants and metals contained in industrial effluents, which allow us to minimize our impact against water pollution, often industrial. Moreover, the electroplating workshop with which we work is equipped with a new generation of patented fibers for the water and air depollution as well as the complete recycling of metal traces in it, registering in accordance with the concept of “Factory of the future”. These regenerable sorbent materials allow us to go beyond the respect of the most stringent standards for the discharge of industrial wastewater, and to be in compliance with the future European and World regulations of Zero Liquid Rejection.
[FAQ]
2)      In what way is it vegan ?
The models and prototypes are made with plaster from the first sketches made by hand. CVM ILLE is also using the ancient technique of lost-wax casting, vegan wax, for its casts, instead of the traditional beeswax.
Beeswax is secreted by honey bees. They use it to build the combs of their hive to store honey, pollen and their brood. To harvest the wax, like honey, it is necessary to drive the bees from their hives. The most used technique is to smoke the hive. The bees are intoxicated or crushed and the queens have their wings clipped to make sure they stay in the hive. CVM ILLE therefore chooses vegan wax, preserving biodiversity and the species itself.
In addition, CVM ILLE is in partnership with the city of Antwerp, to install honey flowers on the front of our shop. A simple gesture, but one that, on a large scale, will make a real difference.

Moreover, all the members of the CVM ILLE team being themself vegan and eager to have a lower carbon footprint, it is important for us to offer sustainable products, preserving the environment, in a sincere and honest approach.
For each jewel purchased, 2% of the sale price is donated to the French Association "Les Luttes à Lier" for the creation of the First Animal Sanctuary (Vegan & Anti-Specieist) in the #Paris region, a non-oppressive place of life for animals saved from a life of mistreatment, breeding, or slaughterhouse.

Accessories are a trusting friend that you can always rely on. From those pair of earrings that add marvellous moments of sparkle to an evening look or your go-to necklace that an everyday outfit just wouldn’t be the same without. They are always there, the cherry on top. Often, also a moment of impulse, accessories are a shiny form of indulgence that we just can’t resist. Simply a new bag or belt can be a sly trick to the eye so nobody notices you’re wearing the same dress as last Saturday! A quick purchase on a whim or a classic that can be found at the top of your jewellery box, accessories are always an amazing way to reinvent an outfit and style it a new way. So we wanted to indulge you in 5 fabulous accessory trends that can be perfectly matched to some of our Mellaris dresses and jumpsuits from our S/S19 collection.
Tumblr media
‘Golden Hour’
Whilst metallics amongst jewellery will always remain a dominant favourite, trends within the metallic family do noticeably come and go. Once rose gold was the crowning must have, but as seasons continue to turn over, gold this year seems to be a reoccurring fan favourite. May it be the perfect pairing for the popular golden hour selfie, this trend appears to be going no where as it continues to be one of the ‘it’ trends of the year. The beautiful Meteora dress and flattering ‘v’ shape neckline paired with a layering of delicate golden necklaces and an array of rings is a stunning way to finish off this summer look. Completing this floral fantasy with golden, yet dainty, jewellery seems to be just one of the ways of bringing the sun and beach back home whilst enjoying a cocktail or two on a sunny afternoon.
Tumblr media
‘Wearing Nature’
Fashion as ever continues to echo the waves society makes, whether it be through political or cultural shifts, these influences are replicated through shape, fabric or silhouette. As sustainability becomes a rising discussion, high-street and high-end fashion designers have turned their heads to wearing nature. Bags, belts and earrings a like are trending in the form of wooden beads and splints, catering to all of our woven accessory needs. These more favourable decomposable materials additionally make for a neutral colour palette of Instagram-able dreams, ensuring that this trend is going no where any time soon. The Katrina dress is a tropical paradise draped into a chic Bardot silhouette, making this array of blues and greens the perfect foundation for layering your naturalistic accessories. Either a statement over sized woven basket or a petite beaded purse would be a perfect pairing for this summery dress.
Tumblr media
‘Petite Purse’
In February, designer label Jacquemus took on the reigning small bag trend, shrunk it and took it to new heights. Beaded, faux-croc and transparent, we want them all. This understated accessory might just be the biggest trending statement in fashion right now, and whilst these days all you need is your contactless, lippy and your phone, the petite purse really is the perfect size. The Billy jumpsuit needs no introduction, this electric statement piece comes in three colours, red and black, and we’re just mad about the yellow. This stand out look is not for the faint hearted and whilst all eyes are on you, the petite purse is just the perfect accessory to tell everybody you’re wearing the outfit, and it’s certainly not wearing you.
Tumblr media
‘Starry Eyed’
We’re all starry eyed for this astrology trend that encapsulates not only a touch glamour, but personalisation too. Zodiac and constellation necklaces are a great thoughtful gift, or a treat for yourself, that is subtly personalised and timeless. The Tessa dress is a fashionable classic, so shoot for the stars with your accessories and add a touch of sparkle for a special occasion. Dainty diamante rings encrusted into moons and stars are a trendy pairing with this romanic red number. Seen as there’s no such thing as too much sparkle, why stop there? Complete this look with a hair-slide or two and last but not least, a dazzling pair of earrings.
Tumblr media
‘Hair Styling’
With the fashion community in a frenzy over hair accessories, it’s hard to remember a time before the hype and styling yourself H to T wasn’t taken so literally. The continuous influx of hair styling products, hair-ties, hairbands and clips, is a refreshing take on accessorising, fuelling us with new ways to style our outfits. The Livia dress is modern outlook on the little black dress, and a 21st century take on Audrey Hepburn’s Breakfast at Tiffanys Givenchy iconic look. Any woman wearing the Livia dress, however, is certainly no window shopper. Instead, our modern woman is more likely to be having breakfast staring out of the window of a bottomless brunch restaurant. She’s always on trend, and therefore never an outsider! Rather than a string of pearls, complete your LBD with a pear hairband or clip to complete this modern twist on an old classic.
We hope this style edit has inspired you and gave you an array of new ideas on how to style your Mellaris dresses and jumpsuits. Our flattering silhouettes and fantastic florals offer an underlying classic style that makes them so diverse and adaptable for new upcoming trends. With our A/W19 collection almost ready for release, we can’t wait to showcase to you more amazing designs that we have up our sleeve.

Exclusive: Carole Middleton's first interview: 'Life is really normal - most of the time'
‘Two things you need to know. Carole’s very, very nervous, and she doesn’t do sofas,’ the Telegraph’s team on the shoot warned me the night before I went down to Bucklebury in west Berkshire to interview her. ‘When we asked her to perch on one,’ they continued, ‘Carole’s response was, “Who sits around on a sofa?”’
Sure enough, a couple of days after the shoot, when Carole, clutching a soya latte (she’s recently gone vegan/flexitarian) and slightly late, sweeps into the boardroom at the HQ of Party Pieces, the business she set up in 1988, she doesn’t sit down but immediately takes me on a tour of her empire. Just like that. I don’t quite know what I expected – not trumpets, but perhaps some sense of ceremony – but then I don’t think she knew what to expect either. She’s never done an interview before.
The tour goes on so long that at one stage I wonder whether she’s planning to do the entire interview on the hoof as part of a cunning ruse to get it all over and done with before I’ve had time to press record. It does, however, give me time to adjust my retinas to the life-size Carole, inevitably smaller, but also more youthful, than the version the world has become accustomed to. This, lest we forget, is the future British king’s grandmother – arguably the second most famous granny on the globe.
In one sense, empire, as Carole Middleton would be the first to point out, is far too pompous a word for the collection of brick sheds and barns that Party Pieces has, over the years, colonised on a country estate in Berkshire, a 15-minute drive from the Middleton family home. There are a couple of large warehouses with radios blaring pop music and shelves of pre-filled party bags, fancy-dress costumes, table runners, Let’s Be Mermaids garlands, rose-gold team bride plates and much, much more. ‘And this is just a small part of it,’ says Carole.
There are around 7,000 products in total on the Party Pieces website. She’s seen the cactus, llama and fern trends come and, in some cases, go. But there will always be dinosaurs and princesses. The largest part of the business – at least half – remains children’s party accoutrements, but now there are also accessories for baby showers, 30th and 50th birthdays.
The subtext of all this is that Party Pieces is a serious business that was successfully operating a long time before what Carole later refers to as Catherine’s ‘impact’. It’s a private company and they won’t release figures, but during their busiest periods, they dispatch around 4,000 orders a week.
The beamed open-plan office is where most of her 30-strong admin team (none of whom seems given to hat-doffing in her presence) sit. As does Carole. ‘It’s better to be with everyone so you can see what’s going on,’ she notes. ‘They say it’s a bit like a hurricane arriving when I come in.’
The many Americans who order from Party Pieces would be charmed to know that chickens ran through central HQ until the Middletons moved in. But the décor is more Ryman than Soho Farmhouse. The beige carpets are worn, with several threadbare patches, and there are MDF desks and swivel chairs. The walls in the small boardroom are banana yellow.
Carole herself, however, is a vision in a khaki Ralph Lauren blazer and black T-shirt, black skinny M&S trousers (her legs are phenomenal) tucked into Russell & Bromley riding boots, and minimal jewellery – small drop earrings, a couple of gold rings and a thin gold chain with which she constantly toys. It is classic Middleton style, although Carole tells me she far prefers dresses (‘not ones that are tight round the middle though, my shape’s changing’). Maybe it’s the hair. She gets it done locally and it’s shorter and glossier than in recent pictures. The fact that it seems slightly darker emphasises how alike she and her daughter Catherine, the future Queen of England, look. Perhaps it’s the golden tan or the light-touch make-up – the kind where you can’t see the edges. But whereas Catherine and her sister Pippa look much the same on camera as off, Carole, all flashing, watchful hazel eyes and fluttery, girlish nerves is, at 63, far more striking, delicately boned and simultaneously softer-looking in real life than in pictures.
But the voice is what everyone wants to know about. Is it stewardessy (in her early 20s she worked for British Airways)? Elocutioned? Lynda Snell? None of the above. The best description is probably modern posh – not affected, not mockney. If we’re on a scale of BBC presenters, I’d say Mishal Husain. In terms of warmth… maybe Martha Kearney.
Although she hardly ever looks me in the eye, she is very cosy once she gets going: smart and interested. On the shoot, she asked everyone about themselves and dispensed breastfeeding tips to the make-up artist. I don’t think the solicitude towards others is forced, though it does take her a while to warm up (not in terms of temperature, she’s obviously got terrific circulation as there’s a bracing chill in that boardroom). But she does seem like a lot of fun.
You can see why the Middletons remain such a close family (Catherine texted her on the shoot to wish her luck) and why they all, spouses in tow, gravitate towards Granny Middleton. ‘I do love a good party,’ she says later. ‘I’m definitely a night owl and a real chatterbox. My children look at me sometimes…’
Obviously we’re not here to discuss the children, and certainly not their spouses (Pippa is married to James Matthews, a former racing-car driver, hedge-fund manager and heir to the Scottish feudal title Laird of Glen Affric; James, after an on-off relationship with TV presenter Donna Air, is currently single; their oldest daughter, we know about). Carole and her husband Michael have been commendably discreet during the 13 or so years since Catherine began dating the Duke of Cambridge. As Carole says, ‘Over the years, it’s proved wise not to say anything.’
But Party Pieces, her one-stop-solves-all business, has been going for more than 30 years, ‘and I just thought I should celebrate a little’. And it is a good story, part Catherine Cookson, part careers manual for would-be entrepreneurs, as well as being a business that, says Carole, has been flagrantly copied. Her own role model she says, was Laura Tenison, founder of kidswear brand JoJo Maman Bébé, whom she went to watch at a few conferences in the early days of her own company.
Carole Goldsmith, as she was, seems to have had a strong work ethic from the start. Her father Ron was a painter and decorator. Her mother Dorothy, aka The Duchess (because she always looked so impeccable), was a character. ‘Everyone adored my mother,’ she says when I relate how the taxi driver who picked me up from a local train station and drove me to the Party Pieces HQ, told me she’d been a close friend of The Duchess.
Ron and Dorothy moved to Berkshire from west London 10 years after Carole and Michael. Carole’s own closeness to her children and grandchildren is an echo of the relationship she had with her own family, which was ‘small but tight’. Her younger brother, ‘Uncle Gary’ of Maison de Bang Bang fame (at the time of Catherine and William’s wedding, the press had a joyful time detailing Gary Goldsmith’s party reputation), is also an entrepreneur.
Carole spent her first six months in a council flat in Ealing. She initially left school at 16, got a job with the Prudential in Holborn and hated it. ‘It was one of those massive offices with rows and rows of desks.’ So far, so early 1970s. But Carole knew she could achieve more and asked Ron if she could return to school to do her A levels. She got four: art, economics, English literature and geography, which she wanted to teach. ‘But my parents couldn’t afford to put me through college, so I thought I’d see if I could get a bit of money together and fund myself.’
While she’s recounting this, she suddenly remembers she got a job – she can’t remember the year – on the John Lewis A level trainee scheme. This has always been considered the gold standard in retail and was extremely hard to get on to. Carole is bemused by her own memory lapse: ‘Gosh… how did I forget? I can’t even remember when it was. I’ll have to check with Mike.’
This is a woman who clearly spends even less time navel-gazing than she does lounging on sofas. Too busy cooking. She adores cooking. ‘I probably have more cookery books than anything.’ At the moment her favourites are Mary Berry (‘she does use a lot of cream, though’) and Amelia Freer. The combination of the nation’s favourite baker and the fashionable nutritional therapist, who helped singer Sam Smith lose 3½st, seems very Carole.
The John Lewis gig was a dream, particularly her stint in china and glass at Peter Jones, which is where she realised how interested she was in finding out what kind of merchandise sold. But then they told her she had to do a spell on the shop floor as a sales assistant. ‘I thought, blow that. I’m not doing that for six months – it was really boring.’ So she got a secretarial job (she can still do Pitman shorthand) at BEA (before it merged with BOAC to become British Airways in 1974), but didn’t think much of secretarial work, either, so brushed up her French and got a job as ground staff.
‘It’s not like it is now,’ she explains, coming over momentarily a touch Mrs Bennet. ‘You had to be able to speak another language. It was almost like being at university.’ I think from all this we can conclude that Carole Goldsmith was pretty clear she wasn’t going to be fobbed off with also-ran situations.
The newly formed BA had trained too many pilots, so it was redeploying them on the ground and Carole found herself working alongside them as well as other senior staff.
Enter Michael Middleton, six years her senior, ‘rather shy’ but very handsome… A year after they married, she had Catherine; 18 months after that Pippa and then the Middletons moved to Jordan for three years, where Michael worked as a aero manager for an international air station (he was never a pilot). Jordan life sounds comfortable. There was a lot of socialising at the British Embassy, some help at home and the girls were in nursery school. But, says Carole, ‘I wasn’t convinced I wanted to be an expat mum and Mike’s job there was coming to an end.’
By the time they returned to the UK in 1987, Catherine was four and a half, Pippa 18 months younger and Carole, now 32, was pregnant with their third child, James. ‘I thought, “Oooh, bills to pay.” But I also had this strong feeling that I hadn’t achieved anything. I got married at 25, had Catherine at 26…’
Party Pieces launched the same year her son was born, in 1987, with a simple idea about a one-stop place where you could get everything you need for a children’s party. Carole visited the Birmingham Spring Fair, where she sourced some suppliers of paper plates and cups, stuck up a self-designed flyer at Catherine’s local playgroup in Bucklebury, and began stuffing bags from her kitchen table.
Business was steady if unspectacular – this was pre-internet, so responses weren’t always immediate. But then she had the brainwave of advertising with The Red House, a children’s book club she’d subscribed to once her brood began to read: 10,000 flyers to begin with and then 100,000. That’s when Party Pieces really took off.
She moved from her kitchen to a small business unit in nearby Hungerford – Mike built the packing benches. ‘That’s when Michael gave up his job at BA and came in. My mother thought that was big, because at that stage he probably wouldn’t have got employment again, but we could see this was a business that could scale up.’
When I ask about struggles or disasters she more or less shrugs off the notion. ‘We were pretty much the only ones doing this sort of thing when we started. It was really clear almost from the start that this was going to work. I got help from other mums – paperwork and that kind of thing… I think it’s easier to start a business when you’re young. You’re less aware of the pitfalls and maybe you have less of a lifestyle to lose.’
Listening to Carole talk about those early years, what comes across is her resourcefulness and stoicism. She feels they were lucky. ‘Running a business is really very simple: you buy things and sell them for a profit.’ Mike’s decision to quit his job was, she says, their wild card. She is very clear that the business was her idea. ‘And it was a good idea or it wouldn’t have taken off.’ Were there no sleepless nights over the financing? ‘We never took really huge risks. We had to fund our own growth,’ she replies. She doesn’t get stressed, she says, although she was clearly anxious about this interview. Maybe that British Airways training ingrained the necessity of appearing serene while paddling furiously below the surface.
When I ask about juggling a fledgling business with three small children, particularly when working mothers were not as common as they are now, she responds instantly. ‘It was my business, so I could work around the holidays.’ She makes it sound straightforward. She understands the tussle, though, but in the end, she’s a boss. ‘In this office, I see the challenge of working mothers – but if I need them here…’
There was spillage into their home life, ‘Mike and I often talked about work in the evenings or on holiday, but we enjoyed it. I never really felt I was a working mother although I was – and the children didn’t either. They grew up with it.’
The girls were at school till 6pm. That’s a long day: someone who observed them from a distance says Catherine and Pippa were always hard workers at school and encouraged by Carole to hone accomplishments that would serve beyond academia, such as skiing. ‘James would get picked up – very occasionally by someone else – and come back to the office and be here with me,’ continues Carole. ‘I was often finished by 6pm and I didn’t have a long train journey. I think it’s really good to work. It was part of the children’s lives – it still is – and they’d come and help. They did a lot of modelling. Catherine was on the cover of one of the catalogues, blowing out candles. Later on, she did some styling and set up the First Birthday side of the business. Pippa did the blog. I still value their ideas and opinions.’
There was never any doubt in the Middletons’ minds that they would base their family and business in Bucklebury. ‘Do you live in London?’ Carole asks me, looking sympathetic when I nod. Later, when she drives me to the train station, scooping a pile of papers and a plastic cup from the passenger seat of her Range Rover, to save me phoning for possibly non-existent taxis, she shows me the spot she and Michael first fell in love with.
She loves this tiny pocket of remoteness – the fact it’s only an hour from London, that she can take their four spaniels and one golden retriever (James, who lives with them when he’s not in London, shares two of the dogs) for a long walk straight from their house, and the solid, picturesque red-brick architecture. ‘We really fell on our feet moving to this area,’ she says. Their first home was ‘a very sweet semi-detached cottage. We stayed there until Catherine was 13, so the children spent a lot of their youth there.’
There were two more moves – Oak Acre, a detached house where Prince William famously landed his Chinook helicopter in 2008, and the more secluded, seven-bedroomed, Grade II- listed Bucklebury Manor. She’s good at nesting, she says. ‘If you choose your house wisely, you don’t have to do too much. We almost just replicated what we did before. Farrow & Ball Cord and Hay [both shades of beige] – you can’t go wrong.’
In photos, Bucklebury Manor is what estate agents would call impressive, a description that must set Carole all ajangle. She’s on a mission to appear as unaffected and normal as possible. Later, when we’re discussing her love of Christmas trees and how she likes to have as many as possible in the house, including one in the grandchildren’s rooms, ‘so that they can decorate it themselves’, there is one of many long pauses, while she ponders the consequences of a seemingly innocuous exchange. ‘That makes me sound as though I live in a mansion, doesn’t it?’ Erm, you’re the future king’s grandmother, I think. Would a mansion be out of the question?
Maybe she’s right to be cautious. Over the years it has been she, rather than Michael, who has caught the full beam of the Middleton-focused attention, much of which fixes on the idea of her as a pushy arriviste. She stopped reading the stories about herself online over a year ago. I’m surprised it took her so long. ‘Well, I thought it was better to know what people thought. But it doesn’t make any difference. I’m not really sure how I’m perceived now,’ she says. ‘But the thing is… it is really normal – most of the time.’
When I ask her where she most likes to shop, there’s another pained pause. ‘How’s this going to make me sound?’ I half- expect her to confide that her secret vice is Harrods’ personal- shopping department, but only if she can get it closed to the public. But no. Peter Jones is her happy place. ‘The staff are lovely and they all know me.’ She also loves Burford Garden Company in the Cotswolds, where she and Pippa will happily spend the best part of a day.
More Middle England you cannot get. She even loves Michael McIntyre. She could be protesting too far when she later opines that Jigsaw is a bit pricey. She loves Samantha Sung’s shirt dresses and Goat, but likes to shop in the sale. She finds the music in Selfridges a bit overwhelming and she only very occasionally patronises Catherine Walker, but I suspect this is how the Middletons really are.
Carole is known to drive a hard bargain when she negotiates – she’s not a businesswoman for nothing. She seems genuinely concerned that if I take the train back to London from a different station, I’ll have to buy another ticket (all of £22). There are things they spend money on – property, children’s education, holidays – and things they consider to be a waste of money. Fashion is definitely a bit suspect. ‘Do you think it’s important?’ she asks me. When I say it’s a huge UK success story, that first impressions are clearly important and that style, rather than fashion, is worth cultivating, she nods. ‘Now you put it like that, I see what you mean.’
In some ways, there’s a touching naivety about Carole. I don’t think any of the family, with the possible exception of James (and this is based solely on pictures; I’ve never met him) give one iota about being cool. She’d rather be doing other things than clothes shopping. Party Pieces remains a full-time job for her.
‘I don’t see myself stopping [work]. If I did I’d have to have so many projects on. I’d have to redecorate the house. I’d love to travel, but then I’d miss the grandchildren. No,’ she ponders, as if just deciding this, retirement is not on the cards. ‘I’ve got a billion ideas I still want to do.’

Several cheap headphones
The guitar sound of Marshall Marshall can be said to be almost identical to the history of rock and roll, and their headphones have the same outstanding performance. The Marshall Major headphones are designed to inherit the classic look and details of Marshall speakers, such as handmade leather surfaces, gold-plated plaid guitar wire connectors, linings with special materials, and Jim Marshall, founder of Marshall. The jazz signed his name on every Major headset, just like the classic speaker he designed.
Tumblr media
Marshall's headphones are more suitable for listening to rock and metal and are said to be the favorite of foreign rock fans. The connecting cable that comes with the earphone is designed with a telephone line. It is about 120cm long without stretching. If it is straightened, the length can reach 185cm. Moreover, the left and right earphones are arranged with a socket, and the design is quite user-friendly.
This headphone support bar is very stable and does not slide up and down. It can be conveniently folded and stored for daily carrying and storage. In addition to the brown models, there are also white and black models to choose from.
By the way, Marshall's in-ear headphones are recommended. The design is also a retro style and cost-effective.
The brand Urbanears is also from Sweden, with its minimalist appearance and a variety of tonal colors, to see the Swedish's bold and childlike new design.
The Urbanears classic series is Plattan, portable and easy to wear, and it is worth mentioning that it has a music sharing function that provides extra jacks to share music with friends. The Urbanears flagship store currently has 13 colors to choose from.
The Humlan series is very similar to Plattan and looks smaller than Plattan. The difference is that Humlan has a detachable wash function. The Urbanears flagship store is currently available in 9 colors.
The Zinken series belongs to Urbanears' DJ headphone series. The difference between the above two series is that the sound quality is greatly improved, and the new double-plug TurnCable headphone cable is used. One side is a standard 3.5mm plug, and the other side is a DJ dedicated 6.3mm plug, which is very convenient. The Urbanears flagship store is currently available in 8 colors.
The Sumpan in-ear series is also very special. The earphone cable is made of anti-wrap braided wire and the wire harness clip is used to prevent the headphone cable from being messy. The Urbanears flagship store is currently available in 8 colors.
New York brand Frends hopes to bring music and happiness to everyday life through beautiful and fashionable headphones. It is because of this beautiful vision to create headphones that are fashionable, comfortable, and perfectly integrated with sound quality and aesthetics.
Previously, the headphones worn by Dloce & Gabbana during the catwalk were amazing because of their luxurious appearance. In fact, some of them were in cooperation with Frends. Rihanna and Rita Ora have also worn it. Frends has also collaborated with the jewellery brand Baublebar.
Frends can be said to be the red earphones in the street shooting. The cosmic blogger Chiara Ferragni has worn it several times. The headphone shows of the Luda people are also numerous.
Their head-mounted Taylor and Layla collections are inspired by jewellery, with the noble metal and delicate lambskin, while memory foam ear pads and soft woven headphone cord for more comfortable sound quality and practicality. The difference is that the former is bigger than the latter, and the classic color is rose gold. Taylor's official website price is $199.95, Layla is $149.95.
Founded in 2003, Skullcandy Skullcandy has become a well-known headset brand in the US and Europe. Skullcandy has a product design that subverts the traditional concept, combined with high-quality sound quality, completely out of the traditional headset model, reflecting the brand spirit culture beyond the product itself. Today we mainly introduce Skullcandy's Sandout headphones.
Skullcandy Sandout has memory foam ear pads that provide noise isolation. Volume control is available via an online microphone and remote calls. The design has a metal frame but is lightweight and comfortable to wear. The official website price is $149.99.
