I'm a bit stumped on how to post on this blog now. I think the way I self-ship has changed. I used to make up an OC and use them as a conduit to create stories, but now I just kinda imagine my f/os with me. And I'm very awkward about talking about myself at the best of times.

If this comes off disjointed or rambly im sorry lol.

Uhh when me and Sibling were really young we did go to church. Did not understand anything that was going on but I do recall wanting to know more and wanting to know God. I understood the concept of sin and being a sinner and i know i didn't want to be that. I considered myself Christian at that time but I probably wasn't tbh. I did pray a lot tho.

Up until high school i was basically living that same nominally Christian life--i was aware of my bible, didn't read it. Family stopped going to church years ago. I was hanging around a lot of athiests and it was that cringe ahh era of anti-sjw youtube which had a lot of athiests as well. Didn't really agree with the anti Christian things they were saying but i was very bothered by the fact that i couldnt refute any of it. No one i knew irl could answer my questions and i couldn't find anything. It was extremely distressing for me. Like if God was real then it should be able to be demonstrated and proven. Theology should be able to be defended.

Became agnostic for like. 10 minutes. It just felt so wrong and bad like in my body that i was like Nope Not Doing that. Basically stayed Christian out of spite during this period of my life but desperately begged God to show me proof that He was real.

Skip to college: I joined a really solid college ministry and discovered based Christian tumblr. My mentor and a bunch of tumblr Christians were able to answer all my questions and teach me about the faith. I was serving in that church and consistently reading my bible and hearing the gospel. I wanted to believe so bad but I wasn't sure I did. Not bc i believed that Christianity wasnt true, but because I doubted my own belief in the truth.

I remember the moment I really believed though. I was chilling in my freshman dorm on my laptop, reading about apologetics. And i think id found like a list of arguments for the existence of God. I read them and like. Something clicked in my head. Like my whole world shifted. I ran outside and was just staring at everything like God made that!! And that!! And me!! Like the full weight that nothing could exist without God hit me with full force and I couldnt go back to thinking or even existing the way I had before. I also remember calling my parents and excitedly trying to explain everything I'd learned to them and also just repeating God is real over and over. I probably sounded crazy and they definitely did not understand what i was saying but they seemed happy for me. I knew if God was real then the gospel and Christianity had to be true. No other religion compared.

Not too long after that, the head pastor at the time called me and asked if I wanted to be baptized and join the church. I was still a little doubtful of my own belief--what i didnt realize was that I was putting my trust in God to be who He said he was and do what He said He said he would do despite my unbelief, which is what true faith entails--but I said yes. I met with my mentor and pastor. They shared the gospel with me again, and I was baptized.

I didnt realize i was gay until like a couple years after that but yeah thats the story :)

Can’t Fight This Feeling

It was another sleepless night. Dreams about gunmen and traps and boxes.

I knew I was in for another long day, but I was wide awake at quarter after six. I got up, got washed and changed into some black running shorts, a pink sports bra, and a loose blue tank top. I figured if I was going to be up, might as well be a bit productive.

I slid my socks and white running shoes on and left the house, locking it behind with a spare key we left outside.

I did my run and waved at some of the neighbours that were outside already grabbing their paper, blissfully unaware of what me and three other teenagers managed to discover.

My little boring town of Hawkins might not have been as boring as I used to think.

But the four of us were going to try and get in there tonight. We were going to uncover the secrets that they were hiding, once we had proof, we would go to Chief Hopper and let him take it from there.

I didn't know what this would all mean moving forward. Were we all going to get out of this alive?

If Dustin ever got put in a position of being in danger, I would do anything, absolutely anything in my power to keep him safe. I always felt an enormous responsibility to make sure he was kept out of harms way. If he came to me with an issue, I would try and help him resolve it. I would be willing to sacrifice anything to keep him safe.

I've always felt a sense of guilt when it came to Dustin, that started the moment we found out about his condition. Then when dad left...I tried to step up in whatever way I could when it came to him. And I thought it was going okay until Dustin started going to Steve for advice and help within the last six months or so.

But...it was like I told Dustin, I guess sometimes you need an older brother type of friend to help out once you get older.

I couldn't even lie...I actually liked this Steve. The one that was just being an overall nice guy.

It was weird spending this time with him. But I knew if I ever got the chance to speak up about what went on in high school I would tell him in the right context.

"Lou?"

I stopped running and looked to my left to a large driveway which led to a large house. The Harrington house. And Steve was standing in the middle of the driveway.

I raised my hand in a wave as I tried to catch my breath.

"Hey," I called over to him before I took a deep breath.

He walked over to me in his Scoops uniform as usual, and his little sailor hat held tightly in his hand.

"Aren't you a little early for work?" I asked him, as I tightened my ponytail. I couldn't have been running more than half an hour.

He looked down at the ground, "Yeah...no it's only just after seven...I was just gonna...drive around till it was time to get you and Dustin."

I furrowed my brow and titled my head slightly, "Oh. You don't like hanging around at home till it's time to go?" I asked, looking over to his house quickly before looking back to him.

He shuffled his feet before he looked back at me with flushed cheeks and sad eyes. I was taken aback for a moment. This was a totally different look to Steve, either old or new Steve.

"No...um, if I can avoid staying here for longer than needed, I will, to be honest," he shrugged.

I realized that maybe I didn't actually know anything about Steve Harrington.

I heard a door open and looked over to the front door of his house, where an intimidating man was leaving, wearing a black suit and carrying a leather briefcase.

Steve cleared his throat and sent a wave to him, "Morning, dad."

Mr. Harrington stopped at the door of his car and looked down the driveway to me and Steve.

"Shouldn't you be getting ready to serve some ice cream?" he asked his son.

I swear I could feel my heart breaking. Just the tone of his voice to his own son was just...wrong. It was snarky and mean. Not in a joking way just plain mean.

Steve forced out a chuckle, "Yeah, I'm on my way, I ran into my friend, Louise," he said motioning to me with his hat.

I smiled and raised my hand, "Nice to meet you, Mr. Harrington."

He looked to me before he opened his car door, "You heading to college this year?" he asked me in lieu of a greeting.

I looked quickly to Steve who was looking at his shoes before I looked back to his dad, "No, I'm actually heading into my senior year at Hawkins High," I explained awkwardly.

His dad nodded, "Take some advice, don't take any study tips from my son, clearly what he was doing didn't help him," he said, directing the last part right to Steve who still refused to look up.

I felt my face flush in embarrassment on behalf of Steve. His dad got into his car and pulled out of the driveway and drove off without a second glance to either of us.

I looked back to Steve and saw that he was now watching me intently. Maybe to see my reaction, to see if I would laugh or ask him anything.

"Steve..." I began, but didn't know what to say. Sorry that your dads an asshole? If he talks to him like that in front of a complete stranger, I could only imagine what is said behind closed doors.

I looked at him, hoping some of the emotions I was feeling were being shown on my face. Just so he would know that I wouldn't ever judge him or anything based on this interaction with his dad.

He grinned softly and nodded a couple times, "Did you want me to drive you home?" he asked.

"Sure," I answered quietly.

"Come on," he said, before waking over to his car, I went to the other side and got in once he unlocked it.

I slid easily into the car and shut the door quietly after me at the same time as Steve.

"Steve," I said quickly, "listen, we don't know each other that well, but if you ever need to talk..."

I looked over at him and saw the appreciation immediately written all over his face as he looked at me. His whole face just looked more relaxed in that moment than it did a minute earlier.

"Thanks, Louise," he said quietly with a shy smile on his face, he looked forward and buckled up and I followed suit before he backed up and started the drive to my house.

"Nervous for tonight?" I asked him after a couple minutes of comfortable silence.

He chuckled and nodded, "I'd be lying if I said no. You?"

"Very," I told him honestly, "but...we've come this far."

"In and out," he explained, "we're getting in, opening the boxes, seeing what's in them and getting the hell outta there."

I breathed out a laugh, "Agreed."

He pulled into the driveway next to my moms car and parked it.

"Thanks for the drive," I told him with a grin.

He smiled back to me, "No problem...I'll be back in a bit to get you guys...around eight?"

"What?" I scoffed with a laughing edge, "Where are you gonna go for forty five minutes?"

He breathed out a laugh and lifted his hand from his steering wheel in a nonchalant manner, "Around," he said lamely.

I smirked, "That's silly," I sighed, "just hang around the house until it's time to go."

"I dont wanna intrude," he began but I shut him down.

"Please," I said easily, "you're more than welcome, Steve. My mom doesn't care, and neither would Dustin, obviously."

"Do you?" he asked quietly, quickly.

"No," I said simply, "I'm the one that invited you, remember?" I told him before opening the door and getting out the car.

He shut off the ignition when I shut the car door and he got out too.

He followed me up to the door where I tried the door to see if mom was up and unlocked it, which she did so I walked in, leaving the door open behind me for Steve.

"Mom!" I called, "Look who I found on my run!"

I walked into the kitchen and saw her sitting at the table with her usual cup of coffee, she smiled at me as I walked in and I swear her smile grew when Steve walked in behind me.

"Steve," she said happily, "how nice to have you back!"

"Thanks, Mrs. Henderson," he said, he he sat at the table across from her, "I told Lou that I didnt wanna intrude."

She waved her hand at him, "Please, you could never intrude," she said warmly to him, "you're welcome anytime," she explained to him.

I could see the happiness in Steve's eyes when she said that. After this morning I had a new found sympathy for Steve. I didn't want to imagine what his dad was like inside the house. This added a new layer to him, of understand him a bit more in my opinion. Bullied kids at home sometimes bully kids at school kinda thing.

I went and grabbed a cup from the cabinet to pour myself some coffee, I opened my mouth to ask Steve if he wanted any but mom got to him first.

"Do you want a drink, Steve?" she asked him.

"Huh, maybe a coffee if there's enough," he said.

"Of course! LuLu, gets some coffee for our guest, won't you?" she asked.

I turned to look at the two of them at the table, he looked at me with a smile, I smiled back before rolling my eyes a bit and poking my moms shoulder, "I was just about to ask him."

She turned in her chair to look at me with a sly smirk, "Well I beat you to it so," she said jokingly.

I stuck my tongue out at her, "Real mature, Louise!" she told me, still smirking.

"Thank you," I sassed back with a smile before I turned back to grab a second cup which I filled with coffee too.

I picked both mugs up and brought them to the table, setting one in front of Steve and the other in front of where I was going to sit next to him.

Mom had the milk and sugar set on the table we were at so I grabbed the sugar and spooned some in before pouring a tiny bit of milk in it.

"How did you two meet up today?" mom asked.

I shrugged and looked to Steve quickly, "I was out running and just happened to run by Steve's house, and he offered to bring me back home."

Mom looked at Steve all doe eyed, "That's so nice of you Steve, thank you," she beamed, "I hope LuLu said thank you too?" she questioned looking to me.

"She did," Steve piped up, "she always does...you raised a...a great daughter, Mrs. Henderson."

My stomach felt tingly and I looked over again him, he was already looking at me with an unreadable expression. But his eyes had a tenderness to them. I smiled softly at him.

"I'm happy to hear that," mom approved.

"Hey...when did you get here?"

I broke eye contact with Steve to see my brother walk into the kitchen with his dumb Roast Beef shirt that I honestly didn't understand.

"Longer than you've been awake," I joked.

"At least it looks like I went to bed, looks like you've been up for three days straight," Dustin prattled back.

"Ha ha," I answered back monotone, before taking a final sip of my coffee.

"I'm going to shower," I said before I stood up and brought my cup to the sink, "have a good day at work," I said, kissing my mom on the cheek before I walked out of the kitchen.

I went to my room quickly, grabbed my new clothes and towel before going across the hall to the washroom.

The whole time I kept thinking about how bad I really felt for Steve. The sad crushed look he had on his face after talking to his dad made me really emotional. I couldn't imagine having a strained relationship like that with my mom.

I finished up and changed into my shorts and light blue loose tank top and white runners once again.

I tossed my other clothes in the hamper on the way out of the bathroom and went back to the kitchen.

"Listen, it's like I told you yesterday, you've gotta find your Suzie, man," Dustin was whisper yelling.

"Dustin, will you just relax for a minute? Eventually I'll find my Suzie or whatever, but we've got a few more pressing issues to deal with, for example, how do we get in that room?" Steve whisper yelled back to my brother.

So Steve was still on the hunt for his own 'Suzie,' maybe Dustin was lending him his dumb pick up lines that, apparently, were failing. But...why did my stomach suddenly drop.

I walked around the corner and into the kitchen, "Yeah, you two can find a girlfriend for Steve tomorrow," I said, trying to hide the tiny trace of sadness I felt through a small joke. What I wasnt expecting was the deer in headlights looks from both of them and Steve's beet red face.

"Oh my gosh, I was joking," I told them with a small smile, "calm down. Steve's right anyways, we've gotta figure out a way into that room. So come on," I told them, taking a step backwards, "let's bust into a storage room and find out what the Russian spies are hiding!" I declared.

Dustin smiled and nodded, getting up from his chair, "Let's do it."

I just had the most wild dream.

Basically, it was a hunter games-esque scenario but it took up the space of an entire rural town. 6 people were placed in a farmhouse, 3 people on each team. Whoever took over the house got it and all of its resources. Once the second teams from each houses were eliminated, the remaining teams would fight until one was left. I dont remember initially knowing that there was an entire town of people going through this same thing because we were dealing with our own issues.

My team was made up of me and two other girls: my best friend, whitney and one other girl I cant remember but she was really small and mousey. The other team in our house was made up of three redneck guys (racist, sexist, good with weapons, the whole stereotype). Slowly, the guys started forcing us up out of the first floor and into the second. Then the third. It was night and raining hard outside.

This all seemed to happen over the course of only a few hours. We had time to survey the upstairs and come up with a plan because somehow we knew that now that we were confronted again, the guys would kill us. We found a small window in a bathroom. It was wide but barely tall enough for someone to squeeze through, but it was also the only window upstairs. It was also near the top of the wall, so we would have to support each other to get to it and then the last person would have to come up with another way. The bathroom had pink wallpaper and white ish pinkish tiled flooring and countertops. There was one vanity tucked into sort of an alcove in the wall, the toilet opposite that, (but no shower or bath). The window was on the wall adjacent to the toilet and on the far side from the door, which was adjacent to the vanity. There were pink towels all over the floor and hair and makeup products all over the vanity.

We started by trying to squeeze through the window and I was chosen as the first one. I managed to get my head and arms through, but my chest kept getting stuck. My two friends below tried pushing up on my ass to lift me further up out of the window, but as we were doing that we heard the guys and it sounded like they were trying to get through our barricades on the stairs.

I got down, out of the window and we tried to come up with a plan. Whitney was the next to try the window. She managed to escape and next followed mousey. She escaped as well, which left only me. I was panicking, under the impression I would never fit through the windown and escape. I went to leave the bathroom and find another way out, but just as I did, one of the boys' faces poked out in front of the door with a sick grin and terrifying looking knife. He slashed at me and I tried to shut the door but he managed to kick it back open. I kicked him backwards and sent him reeling and managed to shut and lock the door in that time. I made a small makeshift barricade and tried to think of an escape with the time I had bought myself.

My only way out was the window.

I decided to try again and discovered that my friends had built stairway to the window, which I used and began forcing myself out. I, once again, got stuck at my chest (I have very small boobs by the way so who knows why this happened). I struggled harder as I heard two voices outside the door, knowing they had left one boy downstairs to keep watch since they didnt know I was the only one of my team left.

I managed to escape.

The shingles of the roof were slick (spanish style shingles) but I managed to keep hold as I slid down and grab onto the gutter, lowering myself onto the second story landing and then lowering myself onto the porch. It was still pitch black and raining outside. I remember having to be so careful because I was terrified that the guy left downstairs would see me through a window. I was silent as I crept over the wooden porch and down the stairs to the ground. From there, I started running.

Our house must have been on the far edge of the town because I could see distant lights from houses to the left but only a long wire fence to the right.

I ran to the fence, but as I drew closer I saw hundreds of dark figures standing near it. I looked back to the left and saw hundreds more figures standing in the shadows beyond the house lights. From both sides, they began creeping closer, sticking to the shadows.

I made a split decision and ran to the right, towards the fence. Even if I didnt make it, I had a chance if I could force my way through the figures and over the fence. The figures surrounded me, but nothing else happened. They ran with me. As few that were further ahead guided us to the easiest part of the fence to jump and we did. The figures that had been to the right came in behind us.

I looked around, they were all people like me! They had been those teams that had lost their respective houses but managed to escape. There must have been close to two hundred of us running, but we were all dead silent.

We kept running and every so often we would come to a fence we would have to jump. Soon, whitney and mousey fell into step next to me. We were far enough away now that everyone had begun whooping and hollering and laughing as we ran, so whitney began explaining more of what this was. They were all escapees and they were taking us to a place we would be safe until the end of the game.

See, the kicker was that every house had a teams that clearly couldn't hold the house, these teams had been made up of good, kind, strong people from the start. They may have been weaker than those teams that held the houses but they were better people. These people valued human life and they weren't willing to kill for that house like the other team was. They valued differences. Every one of us running were people that, in the real world, were often oppressed or discriminated against: women, people of color, physically and mentally disabled, LGBTQ+, etc.

We ran until we reached a large pond with a fence surrounding it. To my right and across a small and quiet river, there was an area with a bed and trunks of clothes and goods for newcomers. Whitney took me here and I began searching for new, clean clothes.

That's when we heard the sound of the guys from our house. They had won, they were all that was left. And now they were going to finish the job with us.

They had flashlights and had them pointed towards us as. Letting out a yell, the three boys then climbed into their truck and began driving through the fences and toward us. The truck slammed into the bed and trunks of our accumulated goods, destroying everything. Others ran, beginning to jump fences past the lake and away from here. Others fell as knives and bullets from our boys hit their backs. Whitney and mousey and I were the only ones left. In the chaos, whitney and I had climbed under the broken bed, once again barely fitting in the small space. We heard a cry and sputtering, and mousey fell onto the floor next to me with a slit throat. A hand reached under the bed and grabbed whitney, pulling her out of safety as she screamed. I was panicking. Hands kept making grabs for me, but I narrowly avoided each one. One of the larger boys sat on the bed, pushing the broken frame down and crushing me. I gasped but managed to squeeze back out from under there.

Right in front of me stood the largest and most ruthless of our boys, a large and bloody knife gripped in his massive hand. It was jake, a boy I had been in love with my freshman and sophomore years of college, but who had abused me and hurt me and then left me for dead.

I began to run, but he threw the knife and it landed square in my back. I kept running. Jake made a kick for me, intending to jam the knife in deeper, but I was moving too fast and he only barely tapped the handle. I grabbed the knife out of my back and threw it. Though I had meant to throw it far away so he no longer had a weapon, it landed in his neck, hitting his carotid. I stopped and stared at him in shock and did the same. Then he smiled and licked the blade before pulling the knife from his neck and jabbing it into the carotid on the other side as he began to bleed out.

Slowly, the others from the group began to return, watching as the last team from the houses died before us. Somehow, we had won.

Sweet Sweet Savannah...

You have stolen part of my heart...

I was only here two nights, but all I want is a little more of this place! Oh, and you knew you were in the South...when there's rocking chairs everywhere in the airport!!

Savannah was established in 1733, a coastal city in the state of Georgia. It is separated from South Carolina by the Savannah River. It’s historic district is filled with cobblestoned squares and parks such as the gorgeous Forsyth Park with its giant 3 tiered fountain, shaded by oak trees covered with Spanish moss. The district has residences and buildings from a variety of time periods all anchored by the landmark, Gothic-Revival Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist.

I literally had one full day here ( a decision I regretted immediately!) I also managed to book myself into (what I found out later) is the most haunted hotel in the state, the gorgeous Marshall House. The building is a rarity as it was never a house, as its name would indicate, it was built as a hotel in 1851. The building was occupied by the Union forces during the war, and used as a hospital. When the hotel was restored in 1999, workers were replacing some damaged floorboards downstairs when they found human remains. The area became a crime scene, but they soon learned that the area had once been the hospital's surgery room, leading historians to believe that they came from the amputated limbs of Civil War soldiers. One of the really cool things is all the artefacts uncovered during the restoration process were framed or placed in cabinets and are displayed in the hallways of all of the upper levels (2-4) its a lovely way to wander around the floors discovering its history. The history of haunting is very interesting and worth trolling through some of the sites to read. I can say I was in room 214, which when I researched it turns out was a room that they had had problems with in the past (prior to having it cleansed, blessed, exorcised or whatever they did to fix it). Anyway, no really weird stuff happened when I was there, its an old building, so there’s always going to be odd noises, right??? An amazing cool old building, with a fabulous past, any wonder I was in heaven... probably also helped that they have a very civilised wine and hors d'oeuvres time from 5 - 630pm, in the library each evening with a musical accompaniment like the cellist we had on Saturday evening... I am so fancy some times - this one was a real treat for myself and right in the middle of the historic area so a perfect location.

The people in Savannah are lovely. I went off to the Old pink house for dinner on my first night here (I didnt get to the hotel till after wine and cheese time gosh darn it!) The old pink house was highly recommended on multiple food sites. I took off, forgetting it was Friday night, but still got a table pretty quickly (Aussie charm wins again!) The food was expensive, but amazing. The building was incredible with a fabulous history. I was very lucky (or he felt sorry for the solo female - I’m gonna go with lucky...), that my waiter took some time to tell me the history of the house while I waited for my main course. It turns out sections of it were built after the original in order to house the bank manager when the building housed a bank later in its life. It also suffered a recent fire, that fortunately didn’t injure anyone and didn’t destroy the older part of the original structure ( just the extension, which has now been rebuilt.) One thing I didnt know was that apparently the reason these old places have such steep stairs is there used to be a “stair tax” so in order to reduce their tax they made the stairs as steep as they could in order to reduce the number installed.

My one day there I jumped on the local trolley tour company’s hop on off historic tour. It was fantastic. They not only engaging animated drivers who obviously love their city, they also had actors dressed in period costume who jumped on at some of the stops and told us in character who they were and what they did, etc. We took in all of the major highlights of the area places like the Sorrel weed house, Owens Thomas house, the founder of the Girl Scouts movement Juliet Gordon Low’s house, The Hamilton Turner inn, the first house to be fully powered by electricity (apparently the locals used to gather outside at dark and wait as they thought it would explode). The history and the stories I heard were amazing and made me want to explore even more. The weather, however, didnt come to the party. I was headed out to get to the church of John the Baptist when it literally bucketed down, and didnt stop... To that end I headed back to the hotel to grab my wet weather gear and head out again. I then decided I was hungry so went to the Pirate House for some lunch because it was yet another incredibly old haunted building with amazing history and amazing food. The gumbo I had was nice, but didn’t really float my boat, but it seems apparently the spicier ones are to be found in New Orleans (which is why I found it so different to the one I had had there!) Anyway I think it was the service more than the food, he wasn’t engaged in what he was doing and seemed to be on autopilot - maybe he was having a bad day... anyway the building was awesome, and I did a little exploring while I was there. The Pirates' House is home to some rare early edition pages of Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson. They have them hanging on the walls of the Captain's room and the Treasure room. There are differing stories about the house and what went on there, but as Captain Flint was never proven to be anything more than a fictional character, you can safely say that one of the claims that he died in the room upstairs is false. Locals also claim the term shanghaied comes the pirate house, and the fact that they used to have lovely young ladies who offered young men a free drink, dropping poison or sleeping drafts in it when they were not looking. The next thing they knew they were spirited through a tunnel under the building out to the river, and woke up 20 miles out to sea being told they were now part of the crew on a pirate ship.

I then wandered along the riverfront heading back towards my initial goal ( the church), that’s when it bucketed down again. This was not rain, it was similar to monsoon rain that we get in Darwin, except it went on for hours at a time, not just a few minutes. The roads and gutters were awash with mini lakes and I gave up and headed back to my room (ps it also didn’t help that my body was in its ‘trying to kill me’ phase of the month) to be ready for wine and cheese night ... I met a couple of lovely locals who lived about 3 hours out of the city and had come in for the weekend, they were a heap of fun and we all survived the fancy hour together. I then headed out to locate a place that a lady at Nashville airport had told me to go to (yes, I have conversations with people everywhere!). Anyway I was on a mission to locate the she crab soup. I got distracted by a local burger place and had a bison burger instead. Amazing, free range Bison, so so tasty (sorry my vegan/vegetarian friends). My young server was studying at SCAD, the ‘Savannah College of Art and Design’, and filled me in on the huge film industry here in the local area, it was interesting as I had no idea it was so prolific here! Anyway SCAD is credited with rescuing and restoring so many of the historic buildings here, they are a fabulous institution, I loved them before I knew how much more they were doing for the arts industry here.

I have many many reasons to go back to Savannah, so for that I am truly grateful. I will be back to all these places, very soon. The ‘South’ has won my heart with its charm, history, storytelling, easy going way of life, and its people, places and food. I struggle a little with some of the really thick accents, but I think I do the same to some of the people here, so I guess we’re even...

I am headed to Miami now for a few days before jetting across to visit another wonderful friend in Trinidad. So many more adventures to be had!

San Franciscos Fort Mason park is empty in the early morning darkness, every surface the color of a used cast-iron pan. Its pouring rain, and Ive been wandering around since just after 6, trying to find well, Im not exactly sure. All I know is that, according to a Facebook post, members of one of the strangest fitness groups in the country are supposed to be meeting here right about now. But the Google Maps screenshot I pulled from the website seems to have directed me to a parking lot. Or the front door of the high-end vegetarian restaurant Greens. Its hard to tell.

I check Facebook again.

Just as I start thinking Ill have to find my own doughnut, a woman in her mid-twenties jogs up to me looking equally lost. Shes dressed in a gray Adidas jacket, black leggings, and a tank top that resembles caution tape. Her wet hair is stuck to her forehead as though shes just been dunked in the Pacific.

Do you know where November Project meets? she asks with a slight accent. Relieved, I tell her Im trying to find them as well. Im Stine! she says.

And then she hugs me.

What distinguishes November Project is not just the fact that its freejust as instructors arent paid, members dont paybut the degree to which it actually is a social identity. The movement extends beyond exercising to encompass rituals and customs, social expecta­tions, and repercussions for failing to participate. Thats right: If you skip a November Project workout, youre not out any cash, but the fallout is arguably more severe. Youre, well, shamed. Online. Its weird.

Spoiler: Not a lot of people miss workouts. Teixeira calls it an absolute feast for someone studying motivation for exercise.

One member compared November Project to a church. More commonly, people refer to it as a cult. Never in the pejora­tive Im-trapped-and-I-cant-escape sense, though. More like, This is the greatest-tasting Kool-Aid in the world!

While we walk, Stine, whos originally from Denmark, tells me about her obsession with November Project. Shes been a member of the Boston tribebears repeating: tribefor about four months and is visiting San Francisco for the week. Its been such a great way to meet people. Cities can be lonely, but you have this instant community, she says, using a nice-enough line that begins to sound like propaganda as I hear other members repeat it.

Two people who say it a lot are Brogan Graham and Bojan Mandaric. They are November Projects cofoundersand they totally fit their gladiatorial-sounding names: 6-foot-tall, bald, tattooed former collegiate rowers. Back in 2011, when the friends were trying to stay motivated during a Boston winter, they agreed to work out every weekday morning at 6:30, keeping track of their progress on a spreadsheet named for that first month, November.

Then, for reasons neither can quite remember, they sent out a tweet to see if anyone would join in. Two people became three, and a movement was born. When the Boston tribe reached 300 people, Graham and Mandaric got matching tattoos.

In the past few years, fitness has developed into some­thing of a social identity — at least among plugged-in, upper-middle-class, roughly millennial-age urbanites.

It was a powerful turning point for Graham. During his sophomore year at Northeastern University, he was charged with assaulting a rival college rower. Though the charge was dropped in exchange for community service, he lost his scholarship and was kicked out of school. The experience shaped Grahams views on community and inclusion. Got a bad rap? I dont care, he wrote in the movements official history. Are you at November Project to be kind, work your ass off, and start your day right? Then thats all that matters.

As Stine is telling me how much she loves November Projects instant community, we find who were looking for. Unmistakably silhouetted against the foggy morning sky, about 40 people stand in a lopsided semicircle, arms crossed, heads bowed against the wind. They could be praying.

Were going to do a workout that I just came up with! I want everyone to break into groups of four! Find your four! Try to group up with someone you dont normally pair with!

Before we start, she asks if today is anyones first time. A few people raise their hands. I, not quite ready to give up my anonymity, do not. The newbies are directed to state where they come from, how they got here, and whether theyre single. A version of this happens at every November Project meetup, one of the traditions borrowed from Graham and Mandarics original Boston tribealong with chants, stair laps, a rallying move called the bounce, and, of course, physical affection. People come looking for a sense of belonging, Mandaric says. We foster that.

The same thing goes for November Projects other tactics for promoting inclusiveness. Hashtags are essential follow November Project on Twitter and youll see a lot of #hills­forbreakfast, #sleepwhenyouredead, and #justshow­up. Members usually don highlighter-colored sportswear, stenciled and spray-painted with the logo #grassrootsgear. The result is a group of people who look alike, sound alike, and hug alike.

Toward the end of our workout, a man in my squat group finally discovers that I didnt announce myself as a new member. Were going to fix this, he says with a grin. He outs me to McCloskey, who has me wave to everyone during the group photo (another ritual) and apologize for not making my presence known. Eventually, everyone becomes part of the tribe.

In Graham and Mandarics crew days, their coach had a policy: If anyone missed practice, the whole team had to do dry-land workouts. It worked because nobody wanted to let the group down. When they started November Project, they knew theyd need a similar system for keeping people accountable to the tribe.

I feel a tiny bit of thisan expectation that no one is above the groupwhen Im teased for not introducing myself. But thats nothing compared to what happens to someone who doesnt show up for a workout. For that, November Project has perfected a bizarre, more 21st-century form of establishing accountability: online shaming. This is known as We Missed You.

Members usually don highlighter-colored sports­wear, stenciled and spray-painted with the logo #grassrootsgear.

By face, they mean embarrassing photos lifted from the shamed members Facebook profile or supplied by friends. Posts go on to explain that this person committed to attending a workoutmade a #verbal, in tribe-speakbut reneged. Screenshots of text messages and emails confirming said #verbal are posted, along with guesses as to why the absentee might have failed to show upanything from you must have gotten too drunk the night before to perhaps you were lost on a Segway tour. Its an elaborate expression of profound disappointment in the offending person, and there are hundreds of examples on the website.

Paddy OLeary, a member of the San Francisco tribe, remembers when he skipped a workout in 2013. A fellow member made him a We Missed You video; he hasnt missed a workout since. Other victims confirm the tactics effectiveness. You look like an idiot for sleeping in when everyone else is having an amazing time, says Holly Richardson, also in San Francisco. Its not worth it.

McCloskey makes no apologies for the policy. November Project is successful because it relies on word of mouth and accountability, she says. If I tell you that I will meet you at the corner of Market and Sanchez to run to November Project, come rain, snow, or dinosaurs, I will be there. In the event that someone sends one of those pathetic just cant do it texts at 5:55 am, we have the right to roast them. And roast we do.

Heres the fundamental thing about shaming: According to behavioral psychologists, its not supposed to work. Sure, it might force someone to make a change in the momentcontestants on The Biggest Loser shedding pounds before a national audience, for instancebut the effects dont always last. When your goals, attitudes, or values are shaped by external motivators, its unlikely youll stay satisfied or committed for long.

This is certainly true when it comes to working out. For decades, experts in behavior modification have tried to get people to commit to exercise. So far, nothing has worked, says Jack Raglin, a professor of kinesiology at Indiana University. It doesnt matter if youre paid to exercise, if youve paid to exercise, if you might die from lack of exercisemost people just dont stick it out.

Yet theres an undeniable element of shaming to this latest generation of exercise fads. It may have started with fitness trackers, which made people more aware of their activity levels in relation to othersreach 10,000 steps or your coworkers will know youre a slob. From there, programs began capitalizing on group pressure. In Orangetheory workouts, your calorie burn and heart rate are displayed on a screen. CrossFit posts scores as well, believing it encourages people to push harderand now its in 13,000 affiliated gyms worldwide.

But this motivation strategy, researchers like Raglin and Teixeira suggest, could be as doomed as any other. You may initially want to impress your peers or get your moneys worth, but those considerations rarely lead to true behavior change. If the standard adherence rate for exercise holds, Raglin says, half the people will stop showing up to these classes within a year.

Youd think this would apply to November Project too. After all, the threat of We Missed You is external. But there are some differences. November Project members are not paying anything to be there, the goals arent about burning the most caloriesyet people show up anyway. And many of them have been at this for years, without ever missing a single workout. Its clearly working for some people.

True motivation, Teixeira says, takes something extra, something intrinsic. If members of a group think they are gaining useful skills, feel personally valued, and perceive that they have control over their actions, they are more likely to fully commit. Teixeira believes November Project gives you a bit of all these things. And indeed, everyone I talk to seems like a lifer. But then again, I only talk to people who are there. The one real data point we have is that November Project continues to expand. A recent partnership with the North Face aims to help grow the movement.

Jennifer Hurst, an associate professor of health and exercise science at Truman State University, suggests November Project may be succeeding at pulling off a rare thing: positive shaming. It only works when the person truly cares what the shamers think, she says. The desire for social connectedness and the positive feeling some get from the environment must be worth the time, energy, and sacrifice. That explains why the rituals, cultlike as they seem, are so crucial. You dont want to disappoint people you hug, not to mention chant and bounce and dance with.

A number of years ago, Raglin and his colleagues found that married adults who enrolled in a recreational fitness program together had an average adherence rate of over 90 percent, compared to just 50 percent for those who enrolled on their own. The married pair didnt necessarily exercise together or even in the same room, Raglin says. They simply came and left together. Yet the social benefit was quite profound.

That may also help explain November Projects success. Members might not be married to each other, but theyre married to the group. And the group is what holds November Project together.

It turns out some November Project members actually are married to each other. At one of my workouts, a young couple tells me they met in the Boston tribe. The movement encourages this sort of thingleaders are expected to host mixers and speed-dating events. The phrase There will be babies appears on the blog and in promo material.

Yes, its all a bit creepy, and I dont blame passersby who look at us funny (there are many of them). And no matter how many times Im told that We Missed You is not about shaming, its about love, I wont be entirely convinced. But you cant deny the smile on these peoples faces. Nobody looks like that when theyre huffing it alone on a treadmill in their garage. I wont be heading up a November Project tribe back home in Santa Fe, but if one comes to my town, I wouldnt say no to a few hugs.

With dawn creeping over the edges of the city, we put our arms around each other and start to bounce. Yall good? someone says, in signature November Project whisper-shout. Fuck yeah! the group whispers back.

Surprising myself just a little, I say it too.

the first semester of college is almost over and here is what i’ve learned:

1) leaving home is just as terrifying as it sounds like, but it is one of the best things i’ve ever done and one of the decisions i have ever made for myself; there is no need to feel guilty about leaving. in the beginning, i had felt a lot of guilt about deciding to go to school 9 hours away from home. at home, i’m a big part of everything functioning on a day to day basis. big sister duties cover everything from doing dishes to changing diapers to soothing my sister’s pre-teen meltdowns and everything in between, and i knew it was going to be hard for my mom to make the adjustment to not having me around. just a few weeks after i left my dad deployed to norway for 3 months, and i knew it was going to be even harder on my mom to manage a house, dog, and four kids all on her own, so naturally i felt really bad about leaving her to do it alone. what i’ve found in being away is that i have to learn to separate myself from the angelique i am at home and the angelique i am as an individual, on my own, and in my own space. being away from home has allowed me to grow like no other experience ever has, and i’ve been able to discover more parts of myself than i ever would have if i stayed home. family obligations are important, but at the end of the day it’s still time for my siblings to step up and fill my space, and leaving is not something to feel bad about. it allows for growth, new experiences, and new memories, and something like it’s important to give yourself the space to do those things. 

2) what you define as home can change, and that is okay. i’ve always defined san diego as home. it’s where i was raised and it’s the place i always come back to, so in that sense, it is home. but  when i’m in san diego, i refer to ‘home’ as san francisco. initially, i assumed it was because that’s just where i spent the most time, where my bed was, and where i was enrolled in school, but it’s a lot more than that. what i’ve learned is home is not just defined by being the place you were raised or where your family resides, but the place in which you feel the most like yourself, where you grow the most, and where your people are. san francisco has brought to me some of the best nights full of the hardest laughter, craziest stories, and most amazing souls i’ve ever met. i know this city like the back of my hand and whenever i leave it, i’m almost immediately ready to come back, no matter how much i complain when i’m there. it’s my home in that it’s where i’ve established myself as who i really want to be, it’s the place i look forward to being in literally every single day, and it’s where my people are. my god, i love my people here. home is where your heart is and my heart is in these people. bless them for making this place so fucking fantastic. 

3) don’t fucking procrastinate the goddamn essay, bitch. just do it. you’re going to hate yourself when you’re up at 3am writing a 5 page paper on something you had two weeks to do. 

4) communication is key -- prioritize it. one of the most important thing i’ve learned about relationships of any kind is just how important communication is. i’ve always known that it was important to voice your concerns, to make sure what you’re doing or saying isn’t hurting others, and so on. i’ve just always tended to feel annoying when checking in like that with others because i didn’t want to come across as needy, a complainer, or in need of validation. the thing is, it’s not really like that at all. it’s so important to let people know when what they do hurts or bothers you and to do the reverse to make sure you aren’t hurting others. it’s one hundred percent okay to vocalize how you’re feeling, what you are and aren’t comfortable with, and to check in with others about the same thing. the more you do it, the easier it becomes and the better your relationships are with others because everyone feels okay with talking. i’m really glad this is something i’ve picked up and learned to value a lot more, because i feel like it’s just really strengthened my relationships and made me feel so much more comfortable in vocalizing what i’m feeling or have to say.

5) i’m still shit at budgeting. i always say i’m going to do better, and then someone suggests ice cream or boba and i can’t say no. where the fuck is my self control? who knows. 

6) learn to be comfortable being alone. not every single moment has to be spent with other people. coming out of high school, i was used to constantly being with at least one other person and having someone keep me company while walking to classes, going to eat, and so on. this semester has taught me that it’s okay to be alone, it doesn’t make you look like a loser -- deadass no one cares --, and being by yourself teaches you a lot of independence. not everything has to be done with another person; you’re a big kid now and you got this bitch. 

7)  8ams aren’t for me. i mean, once i’m there i’m ready to do the damn thing and get my learning on and whatnot, but getting out of that bed in the morning is hard as hell. never doing that again.   

8) it’s okay if you fall out with friends from home. sometimes this is just inevitable, and sometimes it’s not even for any negative reason. everyone just gets busy and it can be hard to keep up with some people. those who are meant to stick will stick, but others might fall away and that’s okay. don’t beat yourself up about and don’t feel bad about. 

9)  the best people come to you naturally. the biggest thing i’ve learned about forming friendships in college is that when you talk to people with the clear intentions of trying to be friends, it doesn’t work out too well. it all feels too forced and awkward, and the conversation becomes shallow and superficial and it all falls away pretty quickly. the people who stick come to you naturally because, as they say, your vibe attracts your tribe. you’ll naturally just click and stick with people who have similar interests and energy to you, and the rest is history. 

10) tell your friends you appreciate them and show it often! your friends become your family so quickly. maybe it’s just because we’re all so far away from home, but friends in college become your support system, your go-to’s, and just your family away from your family pretty quickly. you spend every day with them considering you all practically live together, and you bond fast because of it. on top of that, there’s a big ‘we look out for each other’ type vibe with college friends in comparison to high school friendships. of course you have your hs friend’s backs, but it’s different in college. it’s more of a we make sure each other are safe when we go out, we look out for each other mentally/emotionally, and we take care of each other like family does because we’re all so far from our actual families. you do so much for each other, sometimes without even realizing, and it’s so important to remind them how much you appreciate them for all of it. 

11) keep condoms on you no matter what. pregnancy who? sti who? sorry, we don’t know them around here. 

12) you can go on dates just for fun, it doesn’t always have to become something! dates are really fun and so is meeting new people. you can go on a date with someone just for the fun of going out with someone and having a good time, there’s nothing wrong with that. it doesn’t make you a hoe or anything. just have fun and see what happens! you don’t always have to commit to someone. just don’t be a dick and lead someone on. if you’re just here for a good time and not a long time and you’re into the casual dating thing, make that shit known. 

13) there isn’t a place in the world that you can’t wear pajamas. that 8am? pajamas. grocery shopping? pajamas. ice cream run? pajamas. who’s gonna stop me? no one. 

14) pizza and alcohol? not a good idea unless you want to vomit. 

15) spontaneity is important and i love it. listen. i’m a whore for a good fucking adventure. my absolute favorite nights in the world have been the ones we don’t plan and just go out and see where the wind takes us. it’s the unplanned adventures that had me walking ten miles to krispy kreme at 3 am, running after a train at midnight two towns over, finding our favorite ice cream spot in the city, and getting to watch the sun set over the skyline. sure it might be hectic sometimes, but it always makes for the wildest adventures and the best stories. not everything has to be so planned and meticulous. let the city take you wherever it feels like taking you that day.

I got a speeding ticket last year around the same time for 15 mph over and just received another (in a different state) for going 18 mph over. I don't understand why people act like health insurance is so radically differently than other insurance. Is it? Insurance is a form of risk management to hedge against loss. If I have the title to my home, I'm not required to have homeowners insurance. If I don't drive a car, I'm not required to carry auto insurance. Why should I be forced to buy health insurance? If I want to take that or any gamble by not buying insurance, isn't that my choice? I will admit that by not purchasing health insurance, I could be putting a burden on others if I was admitted to the ER and couldn't pay, that burden of payment would fall on others. HOWEVER, that burden would be there whether I was forced to carry insurance or not. If I don't make enough money to buy this mandatory insurance, then the gov't will give me tax credits to purchase insurance. Who's paying for those tax credits? All of the tax payers. So either we pay the providers/insurance companies via higher premiums to cover loss, or we pay the gov't via taxes. Forcing (perhaps unconstitutionally) citizens to purchase health insurance won't solve anything, it will just move where the cost is incurred. 6 Guys Youll End Up Dating When Youve Been Single For Too Long

I’m writing this post from my bed.

I’m un-showered, even though I came home from CrossFit three hours ago.

I’m slugging back red wine and crushing a party size-serving of chips and salsa.

I turned my phone on silent an hour ago, just so I would stop checking to see if the guy I like has responded to the text I sent earlier.

Needless to say, I dont think you get much more single than this.

There are nights when I rejoice in it, and there are nights when I sulk in it.

Tonight, its the latter.

But as I sit here, elbow-deep in a bag of Tostitos and knuckles clenched around a topped-off glass of wine, I cant help but be grateful for this single life Ive been living for almost a year now.

Its an unexpected and for me unwanted learning experience.

I say its “unwanted” because Im the relationship type.

Ive never had a one-night stand (nor will I ever).

I like commitment.

Dating gives me anxiety because I never know what to say or do.

Should I text him first? Will he text me?

Im trying new things.

I’ve joined CrossFit and hot yoga, and I quit some unhealthy habits that were crippling my self-esteem.

Ive tried tons of new restaurants completely free, thanks to first dates.

But besides learning about myself, Im learning a lot about the dating pool.

Let me tell you this: When they say there are plenty of fish in the sea, it’s true.

But the ones you want to catch are really, really hard to find. They’re borderline nonexistent.

Ive met tons of guys ranging in age, profession, personality, height, hobbies, etc.

However, after dozens and dozens of dates and hundreds of right swipes that have amounted to nothing, Ive been able to put a label on just about every single one.

Ive boiled them down to six main categories:

1. The Ex

When one relationship ends, its so easy to look back at a previous ex and question why that relationship didnt work out either.

Call it delusion or curiosity, but it always seems like a logical first step when youre single.

So, if youre both single, why not give it another whirl?

Its comfortable. Its fun.

Its your opportunity to double-check hes really not the one who got away.

When my high school sweetheart found out that my recent ex and I had ended things, he came back into my life the same way he left it: like a tornado, leaving a path of destruction in his wake.

Without getting into details for his sake (and his girlfriends, whoops), the verdict was we broke up for a reason.

Thats always a validating feeling.

In the words of my inner spirit animal, Taylor Swift, we are never, ever getting back together. Like, ever.

But hey, like I said, it cant hurt to double check.

2. The Non-Committal Charmer

Hell tell you youre exclusive, but he won’t ever make you his girlfriend.

He’ll monopolize your free time to ensure you dont spend time with anyone else, but he wont commit.

Youll never meet his friends or family, so dont even try.

He is in complete control of the relationship because you let him be.

His charm, wit and personality compel you to stay.

His goal is to perpetually keep your relationship in a hostage situation.

You want to see other people, but you dont want to put what you have at risk because its comfortable and fun.

Youre convinced that at some point, hell come to his senses.

He wont.

So, youre going to want to quit while you’re ahead. Dont waste any time.

3. The Egotistical PrickWho Plays On Your Heartstrings

Is it rough to call these people sociopaths?

Theyll do everything they can to make you like them in a short period of time.

Theyll cook you your favorite dinner, buy you nice wine and compliment you on the weird things you wish people would notice.

They make it so easy to let your guard down.

Then, one day, theyll just stop talking to you.

Theyll give you some bullsh*t excuse like theyre just “not ready for a relationship right now, or they really like you, and “it scares” them.

No, you just needed an ego trip. Or, you needed to get laid.

Or both.Whatever.

These types of guys are the reason all women are a little hesitant, confused, broken and yes crazy.

There are plenty of them out there.

4. The Former Frat Guy Who Just Cant Let Go Of College

In my opinion, these guys are the absolute worst.

This is mainly because they dont even realize theyre being the absolute worst. The naivety isnt at all charming.

He doesnt have to be a frat guy. Hes just the guy who loves college.

He cant grow up.

He loves his boys and beer pong more than he loves his job. He knows more about chugging beers than investing in a 401(k).

He has no idea how to start or maintain a conversation. His career path is questionable.

He most likely has the life goal of being a stay-at-home dad.

Thats what she said jokes are far too common, and he finds them far too funny.

While I personally havent gone on a single date with one of these guys, they exist in the masses.

So good luck, female young professionalsof America who thought men matured after college.

AsI say to my dad, “Im looking for the smartest idiot over 25.”

He’s proud of you. He cares about you.

Youre even a perfect match (according to the stars).

But, you just arent into this person, no matter how hard you try to be.

While relationships take effort, you should never force yourself to fall for someone because you think you’d be great together.

It’s a recipe for disaster and heartbreak, and that’s one sad situationI won’t ever willingly walk into.

So when you find yourself in this kind of mess, you have to break the ice.

It’s unfair to string the other person along when he’s clearly feeling all the emotions you wish you could.

When you’re dating someone youre not into, but whom you love as a human being, breaking the ice is a double-edged sword.

You both end up hurt and bummed.

No way, not me.

Im told Ill meet someone in a sweet form of serendipity.

Ill accidentally spill my coffee on him at Starbucks.

Well bond over the fresh produce at Trader Joes.

Well be at the same bar for happy hour.

Something will happen.

When that something does, in fact, happen, all those heartbreaks, mistakes, moments of weakness and feelings of guilt will wash away.

You won’t question whether your guard should be up or down. What or when to text won’t be a thought.

Everything will slip into place.

Because as everyone always says, “When you know, you know.”

But the ones you want to catch are really, really hard to find. They’re borderline nonexistent.

Ive met tons of guys ranging in age, profession, personality, height, hobbies, etc.

However, after dozens and dozens of dates and hundreds of right swipes that have amounted to nothing, Ive been able to put a label on just about every single one.

Ive boiled them down to six main categories:

1. The Ex

When one relationship ends, its so easy to look back at a previous ex and question why that relationship didnt work out either.

Call it delusion or curiosity, but it always seems like a logical first step when youre single.

So, if youre both single, why not give it another whirl?

Its comfortable. Its fun.

Its your opportunity to double-check hes really not the one who got away.

When my high school sweetheart found out that my recent ex and I had ended things, he came back into my life the same way he left it: like a tornado, leaving a path of destruction in his wake.

Without getting into details for his sake (and his girlfriends, whoops), the verdict was we broke up for a reason.

Thats always a validating feeling.

In the words of my inner spirit animal, Taylor Swift, we are never, ever getting back together. Like, ever.

But hey, like I said, it cant hurt to double check.

2. The Non-Committal Charmer

Hell tell you youre exclusive, but he won’t ever make you his girlfriend.

He’ll monopolize your free time to ensure you dont spend time with anyone else, but he wont commit.

Youll never meet his friends or family, so dont even try.

He is in complete control of the relationship because you let him be.

His charm, wit and personality compel you to stay.

His goal is to perpetually keep your relationship in a hostage situation.

You want to see other people, but you dont want to put what you have at risk because its comfortable and fun.

Youre convinced that at some point, hell come to his senses.

He wont.

So, youre going to want to quit while you’re ahead. Dont waste any time.

3. The Egotistical PrickWho Plays On Your Heartstrings

Is it rough to call these people sociopaths?

Theyll do everything they can to make you like them in a short period of time.

Theyll cook you your favorite dinner, buy you nice wine and compliment you on the weird things you wish people would notice.

They make it so easy to let your guard down.

Then, one day, theyll just stop talking to you.

Theyll give you some bullsh*t excuse like theyre just “not ready for a relationship right now, or they really like you, and “it scares” them.

No, you just needed an ego trip. Or, you needed to get laid.

Or both.Whatever.

These types of guys are the reason all women are a little hesitant, confused, broken and yes crazy.

There are plenty of them out there.

4. The Former Frat Guy Who Just Cant Let Go Of College

In my opinion, these guys are the absolute worst.

This is mainly because they dont even realize theyre being the absolute worst. The naivety isnt at all charming.

He doesnt have to be a frat guy. Hes just the guy who loves college.

He cant grow up.

He loves his boys and beer pong more than he loves his job. He knows more about chugging beers than investing in a 401(k).

He has no idea how to start or maintain a conversation. His career path is questionable.

He most likely has the life goal of being a stay-at-home dad.

Thats what she said jokes are far too common, and he finds them far too funny.

While I personally havent gone on a single date with one of these guys, they exist in the masses.

So good luck, female young professionalsof America who thought men matured after college.

AsI say to my dad, “Im looking for the smartest idiot over 25.”

5. The One Youre Just Not That Into

These, for me, are the most common.

Then again, I think they’re common for everyone.

If we were into every person we met, there wouldnt be anyone special, right?

But sometimes, you really want to like someone.

He hasa great job. You love hisfriends and family. He’s funny.

You have everything in common. You can text all day and never run out of things to talk about.

Your Snapchat exchanges keep you laughing all day long.

He’s proud of you. He cares about you.

Youre even a perfect match (according to the stars).

But, you just arent into this person, no matter how hard you try to be.

While relationships take effort, you should never force yourself to fall for someone because you think you’d be great together.

It’s a recipe for disaster and heartbreak, and that’s one sad situationI won’t ever willingly walk into.

So when you find yourself in this kind of mess, you have to break the ice.

It’s unfair to string the other person along when he’s clearly feeling all the emotions you wish you could.

When you’re dating someone youre not into, but whom you love as a human being, breaking the ice is a double-edged sword.

You both end up hurt and bummed.

6.The One

Every person I talk to tells me the one will walk into my life when I least expect it.

It wont be because I spent my entire lunch break swiping left and right (mostly left).

It wont be because I asked my co-workers, friends, family and acquaintances if they know someone else whos completely exhausted by the routine dating scene.

It certainly wont be because I got drunk enough to get the nerve to walk up to a guy and strike up a random conversation.

No way, not me.

Im told Ill meet someone in a sweet form of serendipity.

Ill accidentally spill my coffee on him at Starbucks.

Well bond over the fresh produce at Trader Joes.

Well be at the same bar for happy hour.

Something will happen.

When that something does, in fact, happen, all those heartbreaks, mistakes, moments of weakness and feelings of guilt will wash away.

You won’t question whether your guard should be up or down. What or when to text won’t be a thought.

Everything will slip into place.

Because as everyone always says, “When you know, you know.”

So until then, my advice to every single woman out there is this: Be a lady.

Be fearless, but not careless.

Be willing to love and unafraid to get hurt.

Put yourself out there. Learn to love yourself.

Discover hobbies that fill your time.

But this is the most important piece of advice of all: Never ever settle for any of the five who come before “the one.”

my five year relationship has come to an end, and although i knew it was gonna happen sooner than later it is still devastating. i feel like i just had to update my tumblr because i really only recorded the really early stages and towards the end. 

we didnt have a relationship that was goals, even if we were together for 5 years we had our issues like any other couple. there were times where i felt like i didnt love him anymore and there were times my heart felt shaken by someone else. Through it all i really couldnt help but love him. 

I really didnt expect to even start dating him, let alone start thinking we were going to have a future together. We are so opposite and so different those differences started to add up on us.

First it was prom, then it was the beach, then he stopped wanting to come over because it was too hot, and he stopped watching things he didnt want to watch with me. Then it was a pattern he let me do whatever i wanted as long as i never forced him to do anything he didnt want to do. We lived like that for years. We lived to whatever was most convenient to him, but as selfish as he was it worked out because of my giving personality. But then he told me he didnt want to have kids, and our agreements like for him to have his first drink on our wedding day seemed irrelevant. 

Before this we wanted to have kids two of them, we wanted to get married, we wanted to live together one day, we wanted to spend forever together, and i started thinking about it seriously even though i told myself nothing was permanent. But i guess i was right and things changed. 

Throughout our whole relationship he loved me unconditionally, he let me be free and independent, he trusted me and never doubted our commitment. I never thought he didnt love me, and we really got to extreme levels of comfort. we told each other the times where we thought someone else was cute, i told him about how i started developing a crush on someone. He became my best friend and i felt that i could be completely myself around him.

But when it got hard for me, when i got into my moods, when i was sad, he couldnt tell me anything. He never knew how to give advice or how to console anyone. But who could blame him he grew up that way, his family doesnt really talk about that stuff, and he can barely understand his own emotions. But when he started to disregard what i would tell him, when it became easier to ignore the fact that i was going through something, i shouldve known that it wasnt okay. and i knew. i just ignored it too. 

I never wanted to be a burden on anyone. I never wanted to make him feel uncomfortable. i just wanted to love him and be there for him, even though i knew we were different and even though i knew i deserved better. But time has affected that. Ive loved him for five years, it was never going to be easy to stop loving him. I understood the conditions of our relationship. I was accepting that with him consolation and empathy was something that i would never be able to receive. But hes tried, hes held me while i cried, he knew how to apologize, and he was capable of feeling guilty. Thats where i thought i saw hope and growth.

But unfortunately those feelings were too much for him. At least he knew i deserved better too. He felt bad that i had put up with him for so long, but instead of breaking up because he felt i deserved better it was more that he was tired of feeling bad about not being good enough, he didnt want to feel bad about himself anymore. And i understand thats valid, but it would have been nice if i knew thats how i made him feel a long time ago.

Some part of me hoped i would be able to help him fix his issues, like by being in a relationship with me he would learn how to handle emotion and how to treat other people. But our relationship was just too overwhelming.

It wasnt all bad either, it actually was more good. In the five years we were together i learned to become more selfish. Although it wasnt in my own relationship i learned to do things for me. I was free and i did whatever my heart wanted. I stopped caring about what other people thought of me and i started creating more opportunities to live my life. I became closer to people around me and my family. All while having a happy relationship. I got to enjoy many back scratches, cuddles, and kisses. I discovered my love for anime and i learned so many things because of him. Yes i deserved better but i never felt like what he gave me wasnt enough. I didnt care that he dropped out of college to work and transfer to community college. I didnt care that he couldnt drive because he had too much anxiety. I didnt care that he didnt have a lot of money. He made me smile and laugh. He made me feel safe and secure. He made me feel beautiful, sexy, cute, and funny. He tested me and our relationship was simple but it never felt boring. In the end we got too comfortable and we stopped trying, but i had such a lovely time. Being with Aaron and the memories together will forever make me smile and make my heart sink to my toes. I rediscovered love because of him. Now i have to say bye to my high school sweetheart. 

Here I am now a 21 year old newly single, going from being in a relationship since i was 16. I dont know how to date or flirt anymore, i dont know how to talk to boys i have interest in, not that im interested. Its going to be hard. I still hope sometimes I’ll get a text saying “hey can we hang out” and then we magically get back together but he also has become less selfish and learned how to be a little cooloer, and knows how to empathize and console me. But he wont and hes really better off by himself right now, and I am too. I guess i need to learn how to live an adult life single and rediscover myself and learn how to live alone. I still love him, a lot, and we told each other we would stay friends, and this is after all the crying and telling each other we still had feelings for each other. I just cant talk to him right now, or see him. It sucks when everything has a fucking association to him but with time it will get better. In the end i hope he stays one of my best friends because i dont ever want him to be lonely. He comes off cold but he really is a big softie, hes really funny and charming too, hes just not good at making friends in person. I hope we both find what we are really looking for and we both end up satisfied with our lives. I dont regret a single thing. I have a lot more growing to do and Im still young so wish me luck. ALSO ITS ONLY BEEN 4 DAYS SINCE WE BROKE UP SO IF I END UP UPDATING THIS WITH SOME NEW SHIT AND FEELINGS IM SORRY
