#GoHear (event name, date, 2 line brief, link) 3-7pm "New York City International Dance Week" (finally!) How it works. 40,000 party goers and dancers of every imaginable style from around the world will flow into the Big Apple and celebrate the physical expression we call dance. Why a dance festival? Back when a certain mayor held court in NYC, a few laws and legal verbiage was adjusted to take on the owners of lounges and bars to shut down dancing. Yes...a movement against...moving. Several individuals got together and decided something had to be done. Along the way, like many really good ideas in the form of a movement, they were met with cheers and jeers. But there was enough positive energy to get them to their goal: to create a lane for dancing in the city of NYC...and it would be gift wrapped by not only the citizens of the city but just as importantly by the Powers That Be: the community boards, the precincts, the parks department, the mayor's office, the tourism sector...it was on. The first Dance Parade event was born in 2006. In the winter of 2006/7 a few of the founders of this great dance movement approached a nightclub in Williamsburg to host the official after party of the still-growing street parade for dancing. I happened to be in a management seat there. It was a blessing gift wrapped in the form of a musical movement. The party wasn't to be there, but the relationship that formed was. To this day I have been an annual supporter of this magnificent movement. But I wanted more for this brilliant idea that had taken on a life of its own, growing from a few thousand to tens of thousands. I offered to the founders of Dance Parade a week of events that lead up to the main event: "You know how Winter Music Conference takes hold of South Beach and Miami every March for a week? Imagine that happening in NYC!" ((My words, fall 2012.)) It wasn't to be. Personal redirection and life shifted so my vision for a week of dance events had to be put on hold. Why the changes in theme every week? Why not just play the same songs every week like many other DJs do to promote just their favorite songs and/or artists? That would be too easy. #GoHear (events) with DJ Freedom! As this day comes to a close I have a couple more posts to share with you. Every Wednesday I present an update about my upcoming music festival. "Rhythm & Soul Music Festival" (#rsmf) returns after a long hiatus. When I first produced this event there was the website called MySpace (some of you remember) and another called ClubPlanet that ruled the social network and music network online respectively. They were a big help in finding talent and building relationships on all sides of the fence. July 1 and 2, 2017 I will bring this event back to life. It will take place at the top of the summer in a venue soon to be confirmed. For more details go to Mixtogo.info. Tickets will be available on MixtogoShop.com in February. There will be a soundtrack available in June ("Black Music Month.") It will feature a song by some of the artists featured at the festival. I will be executive producing it. #GoHear | "CIMM" (Coney Island Music Marathon) Presented by Mix To Go Massive (the movement in music) The first annual "Coney Island Music Marathon" is happening August 12 and 13 near the Coney Island Boardwalk. This event celebrates the best of the underground and independent artists from NYC and beyond. The music genres include deep and soulful house (Saturday), rnb/neo-soul, reggae, hip hop soul and old school (Sunday). There will be an original soundtrack coming this summer on Mix To Go Music featuring songs by artists who will perform at the event. DJ Freedom will executive produce the album and produce the mix alongside 2 DJs well known in the Coney Island music arena. I have already begun speaking with artists to perform at CIMM. Once all the details have been worked out I will post the artist lineup. Originally I wanted to have a "Vendor Village" but there are issues with clearance and politics...so bear with me as I get through it. Speaking of politics, I didn't go to anyone who may be clicked up shall we say, because this is not that kind of party if you catch my drift. This is about #goodmusic and the culture; the community and giving them an event that will compliment what I and the masses who travel to Coney Island each year have come to expect: good music and good times in a family friendly atmosphere. If I can get my sponsorship game tight it will be FREE.
