PROPOGANDA (and spoilers!!) FOR GOG'H:

Guardians of Ga'hoole is a book series about a child kidnapped from his parents and raised by a cult. The whole time he keeps his spirit alive and stops himself from being brainwashed by repeating stories about the Guardians of Ga'hoole (the owl equivalent to Arthurian legends) to him and his friend, under their breath, to keep hope and love for stories in their hearts.

They escape only by the help of the few kind adults around them, and find the rest of their found family unit. They swear an oath over the blood of a bobcat they've slain, a life taken they do not take lightly, that though are orphans they now have each other and will be a Band forever. They then find the legendary tree of Ga'hoole and start training to become Guardians.

The rest of the first arc is dedicated to Soren and the band learning the importance of knowledge and community and love, things they were never before afforded. They learn violence is sometimes necessary but never very noble, that sometimes adults who once seemed big and terrible are in hindsight wicked yes but also stupid and pitiful, and that good humor and not taking yourself too seriously and asking questions and being curious are what makes life worth living.

Meanwhile Soren struggles with the feeling that he must be the one to kill his evil brother, to set the world to rights, and even though he knows his brother needs to die, he wonders if he will be able to do it, with his own talons.

The second arc (which is next on my reread) is about the son of very evil people who must go past what his family wanted him to be and make his own destiny. He is also such a trans allegory, names are important in the whole series and names are a big thing for him, and people even confuse him for a woman because he looks like his evil mother. He's a good kid with gifted kid syndrome and his favorite color is green, because he was raised in canyons, and for a long time the only thing he ever wanted was to see a tree, to know what green looked like.

CORYN IS THE BEST AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL: A SLAPDASH MINI-ANALYSIS

(please forgive if this is repetitive or incoherent; I am running on very little sleep and an ungodly amount of ibuprophen)

A lot of people don't seem to understand why Coryn is my favorite GoG'h character, so I will put it as simply as possible:

His story marks a very sudden conflict shift from man vs man to man vs self, and that can be jarring. However, I think it represents the heart and soul of the series very nicely and is a well-placed narrative transition.

Coryn’s story moves slowly because it is less about fighting an active threat like many of Soren's stories- Instead of a physical enemy, what Coryn fights is a cycle of abuse; all physical conflict takes second stage to the emotional conflicts he experiences. In The Hatchling, he leaves home and takes the first step to break out of the mindset and environment that he was raised in, but in The Outcast the pace of the story slows down because he isn't running away from Nyra and the Pure Ones- he is in hiding. Coryn spends the book fighting an entirely mental and emotional battle, learning how to really and truly break the cycle of abuse that started with Nyra grooming Kludd into the racist cult of the Pure Ones. *

The fact that Coryn needs to learn basic self-care from a stranger, even though he had long since been flying and hunting before he left home, is a testament to how neglectful Nyra was. In The Outcast, it says “He had learned from Mist how to take proper care of his plummels…” (p 41). Mist had known Coryn for less than a month at that point. That is like never teaching your children to brush their hair, because what use is detangled hair in battle? And that Kathryn Lasky would show this scene, such a small victory that means the world to Coryn, really drives home that the slower pace of his story is a purposeful, meaningful choice. 

Coryn's story has always resonated with me because his battles are entirely internal. Yeah there's action and fighting and adventure, but most of his journey is purely metaphorical. He rises above his circumstances and learns how to love, learns how to think for himself, learns how to become great. Growing up with a mother eerily similar to Nyra, Coryn's story has always served as a huge inspiration to me. He rose above his circumstances and by god, he gave me the courage to rise above my own and believe in the inherent goodness of the world. 

Coryn’s story is an *important* one, even if it is less flashy and exciting than Soren’s.

This is Soren, meeting one of my OCs, Melody.

Melody is a beautiful female Greater Sooty Owl that is a singer and travels through the owl kingdoms as she performs. Not only is she incredibly talented, but she is also a Tyto Tenebricosa, a creature of the night and darkness, which pulls many creatures towards her.

Despite the dark reputation of her breed, however, she is an incredibly kind and compassionate owl that leaves a good impression on those she comes across. She is friendly towards everyone, even those who dislike her because of her species, and she adores children.

She and Soren met when she came to the Great Tree to perform and since Soren never encountered a Greater Sooty Owl before, he was astonished by her. Loving to meet new people, Melody of course agreed to meet and talk to him, and she simply fell in love with Soren.

Such a beautiful and kind young soul. He would bring it far in life, she was sure.

Back with another art piece and another OC. This time, have a Greater Sooty Owl for you. She is a gorgeous girl, isn't she. Even though she looks VERY similar to someone...but I can't put my finger on who...

Yes! Have some info about Aurora:

Aurora Headcannons:

She is the tallest owl of the Pure One after B, standing even taller than the Lord High Tyto. Despite her size, she is an excellent hider and hard to spot, especially at night.

She is currently the oldest owl of the Pure Ones, surviving three generations of rulers.

Aurora has no idea who her parents are. She was rescued from the wild by the Pure Ones after being found in the forest as a chick without a nest or parents. To this day, she believes that they either abandoned her or that they were captured and killed by hunters.

She is the foster mother of every Tenebricosa the Pure Ones have apart from the Lord High Tyto. If there is a Tenebricosa egg or chick, it is given to her for care.

Despite being called “The Wild Mother”, Aurora has no biological children nor a mate to produce children with.

She is part of the Pure One’s council and present at almost every meeting. Despite not being able to give verbal input, she communicates through writing, noises and body language. Her participation is considered high value.

Aurora’s talonwriting is horrendous. Hieroglyphics are easier to decipher. Part of the reason why it is horrendous is the speed with which she paints the letters on any form of parchment.

As a Tenebricosa, Aurora is musically gifted, playing multiple instruments she learned during her long life. These include the lute, flute, and harp. If there is any music event at the Pure Ones' headquarters – a celebration after a war won, for example – she takes part in it.

Despite being a soldier that is active in battle, Aurora rarely ever wears a helmet or battle claws, preferring the brutal force of her massive claws and massive beak. Despite being more prone to injury, she is rarely struck due to her agility and experience in battle.

Aurora is almost strictly nocturnal but is seen during the day every now and then. In winter more often than in summer.

At night, she communicates with the other Tenebricosas via clicks and screeches, which sometimes accidentally scares the new soldiers who are still unfamiliar with the noises her kind makes.

Due to her thick feathers, Aurora is prone to heat strokes in summer, just like every other of her kind.

Aurora prefers to hunt her own meals instead of eating those who were made by the cooks. She does, however, eat with the other Tenebricosas to ensure they stay in line and do not start fighting.

Like Metal Beak, Aurora has a strong dislike for alcohol that is not meant for medical purposes. During festivities, she avoids any beverages that contain this “poison”.

She does not apply her markings herself. They are done by designated servants who also mix the colors. She goes there once every two weeks to redo them due to the fact that she is often at the river to drink or to cool off.

She often participates in training fights with other Tenebricosas. They look brutal but they are both a form of entertainment and a way to stay in shape. They do tend to go out of control though.

Aurora is happiest in winter. It’s nice and cold, which causes her to be almost twice as active.

Surprisingly, this old girl loves raw fish while cooked fish makes her feel sick.

When Aurora is nervous, she starts scratching the floor with her claws. Due to the sheer size of her talons, she often leaves deep ugly marks behind that leave little to the imagination what happens to those who get caught between them.

While Aurora has no official title that would hint towards the fact that she actually leads the Tenebricosas of the Pure Ones, she is still the unofficial head of their numbers. She is responsible for keeping them in line, for breaking up their fights and for giving punishments shall someone disobey.

The exact relationship between her and Metal Beak is unknown, but she has been seen physically interacting with him through nudges and an occasional nuzzle. While this may seem strange, it is very likely that this is merely communication done through body language.

Aurora is incredibly reactive to other Tenebricosas that are not part of the Pure Ones and immediately sounds alarm as soon as one is near. Their presence seems to cause her immense stress.
