I've been playing Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'hoole for the WII a lot and I can honestly say it's one of my favorite video games. It may be repetitive, but what makes repetition interesting is strategy. There are certain enemies you have to use certain moves on, and the pure adrenaline I get from watching all other enemies scramble (fly) out of the way as you charge at one makes it all worth it.

For those who haven't played it, it does kind of follow the Canon of the film (for the most part) except you play as 'Shard', who can be one of four different owl species of your choosing. The Hagsfiends from the books are here for some reason, and they annoyingly encapsulate the 'holders of Witchcraft' role they play by being exclusively female.

In fact, it's kind of jarring how imbalanced NPCs and enemies are when it comes to gender. The Pure One soldiers you fight all have the same voice (maybe 2 voices)... a male voice, and the only female plot-relevant NPC you meet is Bryony, a Great-Horned Owl who leads a resistance against The Pure Ones.

Honestly... if it didn't bother her too much to leave the resistance, I kinda wish we got her as a Wingman instead of Cormac. Because with Streak and Parzival, they're actually relevant to the plot and have their own speaking lines and character arcs and Cormac has... nothing. Oh well a guy can dream.

Remember Allomere from the film? In this game you get to throw him against rocks until he dies >:D

PROPOGANDA (and spoilers!!) FOR GOG'H:

Guardians of Ga'hoole is a book series about a child kidnapped from his parents and raised by a cult. The whole time he keeps his spirit alive and stops himself from being brainwashed by repeating stories about the Guardians of Ga'hoole (the owl equivalent to Arthurian legends) to him and his friend, under their breath, to keep hope and love for stories in their hearts.

They escape only by the help of the few kind adults around them, and find the rest of their found family unit. They swear an oath over the blood of a bobcat they've slain, a life taken they do not take lightly, that though are orphans they now have each other and will be a Band forever. They then find the legendary tree of Ga'hoole and start training to become Guardians.

The rest of the first arc is dedicated to Soren and the band learning the importance of knowledge and community and love, things they were never before afforded. They learn violence is sometimes necessary but never very noble, that sometimes adults who once seemed big and terrible are in hindsight wicked yes but also stupid and pitiful, and that good humor and not taking yourself too seriously and asking questions and being curious are what makes life worth living.

Meanwhile Soren struggles with the feeling that he must be the one to kill his evil brother, to set the world to rights, and even though he knows his brother needs to die, he wonders if he will be able to do it, with his own talons.

The second arc (which is next on my reread) is about the son of very evil people who must go past what his family wanted him to be and make his own destiny. He is also such a trans allegory, names are important in the whole series and names are a big thing for him, and people even confuse him for a woman because he looks like his evil mother. He's a good kid with gifted kid syndrome and his favorite color is green, because he was raised in canyons, and for a long time the only thing he ever wanted was to see a tree, to know what green looked like.

I like warrior cats too and it's iconic but pls give my love GOG'H some love

CORYN IS THE BEST AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL: A SLAPDASH MINI-ANALYSIS

(please forgive if this is repetitive or incoherent; I am running on very little sleep and an ungodly amount of ibuprophen)

A lot of people don't seem to understand why Coryn is my favorite GoG'h character, so I will put it as simply as possible:

His story marks a very sudden conflict shift from man vs man to man vs self, and that can be jarring. However, I think it represents the heart and soul of the series very nicely and is a well-placed narrative transition.

Coryn’s story moves slowly because it is less about fighting an active threat like many of Soren's stories- Instead of a physical enemy, what Coryn fights is a cycle of abuse; all physical conflict takes second stage to the emotional conflicts he experiences. In The Hatchling, he leaves home and takes the first step to break out of the mindset and environment that he was raised in, but in The Outcast the pace of the story slows down because he isn't running away from Nyra and the Pure Ones- he is in hiding. Coryn spends the book fighting an entirely mental and emotional battle, learning how to really and truly break the cycle of abuse that started with Nyra grooming Kludd into the racist cult of the Pure Ones. *

The fact that Coryn needs to learn basic self-care from a stranger, even though he had long since been flying and hunting before he left home, is a testament to how neglectful Nyra was. In The Outcast, it says “He had learned from Mist how to take proper care of his plummels…” (p 41). Mist had known Coryn for less than a month at that point. That is like never teaching your children to brush their hair, because what use is detangled hair in battle? And that Kathryn Lasky would show this scene, such a small victory that means the world to Coryn, really drives home that the slower pace of his story is a purposeful, meaningful choice. 

Coryn's story has always resonated with me because his battles are entirely internal. Yeah there's action and fighting and adventure, but most of his journey is purely metaphorical. He rises above his circumstances and learns how to love, learns how to think for himself, learns how to become great. Growing up with a mother eerily similar to Nyra, Coryn's story has always served as a huge inspiration to me. He rose above his circumstances and by god, he gave me the courage to rise above my own and believe in the inherent goodness of the world. 

Coryn’s story is an *important* one, even if it is less flashy and exciting than Soren’s.

I’ve been casually getting back into Ga’hoole and by that I mean extremely and intensely and now owls have taken over my life again.... I keep thinking about an AU where Phillip and Nyroc/Coryn successfully escape and also get owl married together

"Thoryskan, also known as Thory, is a young male Tenebricosa owlet and one of the fifteen children that have been successfully raised by the Wild Mother, Aurora. Among the Pure Ones, he is known for being a rambunctious but also a very ambitious soldier who thrives to impress yet also to challenge his authority, often doing questionable things and occasionally having to be reminded of just who is in charge."

"Despite his energy seeming to be boundless and his tendencies to do remarkable yet also dangerous stunts to show off, Thoryskan has physical disabilities that affect his right wing and leg. He required physical therapy ever since the surgery following his rescue as a hatchling and to this day, he still suffers from stiff joints and stabbing pain in his knees, ankles, shoulders, etc. To assist in this, he occasionally wears braces made of leather or steel (depending on the occasion) and is given medication that is regularly sneaked into his food to ensure that he is actually taking them."
