Idea for a story: Woman has a homebirth that goes on for a very long time because the baby is huge. She has to do things such as making food and try to sleep, even getting the package sent to her home all while the head takes forever to come out.

“Oh my god!” 

Tia said as she endured another intense contraction. She had been in labor now for about 36 hours. It started with tiny contractions and slowly became more intense for her as the hours passed by. Tia, a single mother was now due to give birth in her apartment. She wasn’t the social type and really did not want to give birth in a hospital or with others around. She was willing to risk a home birth alone to simply be away from interactions. Tia had gotten pregnant from a hookup that was taken too far. She always wanted a friend and companion with her, so who better than her own baby to join her. Needless to say Tia was excited to have this baby. 

Tia was 26 and had always been introverted. She was 5 foot tall and had a petite frame. She had blond hair and blue eyes and was truly beautiful. Her pregnant belly was so big and contracted on her tiny frame, it looked like she was carrying a Beach ball. Tia ignored the doctors appointments and simply did the birth research herself. She wanted to avoid people and the touch of midwives or doctors. Tia knew her belly was a bit on the bigger side for a girl of her stature and was simply unaware that she had within her a 12 pound baby girl. For a first time mother, a 12 pound baby, and a small frame woman….. This was to be an interesting birth.

“Uggghhh, This is starting to hurt!” Tia said aloud as she sat upon her couch. She had been naked since the labor had started. Besides it was just her, so why not? She sat upon the couch with her big belly protruding from her frame. She reached down and felt inside her vagina. She pushed her finger about 3 inches in.

“Nothing yet.” She exclaimed. 

Tia had gone through a rough transition and knew she was dilated properly, but with her cervix being naturally high, and her fingers being small, she didn’t have the ability to note the giant head that was now stretching her cervix wide open. 

A few hours progressed as Tia endured contractions. As she did she watched her favorite movies to keep her entertained. The day was young yet, and she figured that by days end, she would have the baby out. Around 1pm Tia had made a small lunch and the contractions became intense. She had bought a birth stool upon which she sat, facing her couch and enduring contractions. Around 1:30 pm the urge to push finally hit her. It had been 40 hours of labor now, and it was good that she could finally start working the baby out of her belly. Tia was excited. 

At 1:45 pm Tia reached down once more and interred a finger, she pushed her finger was in and bumped something. It felt warm and squishy, but as she pressed in a bit, It became hard to the touch. She knew this was her daughters head. Tia smiled ear to ear knowing that her baby was soon to be born. The celebration was short lived however as the next painful contraction hit. She pushed, and pushed hard. 

“Mmmmmguh.”

“Mmmmmahhhh.”

“Ahhhmmmmmugh.” Tia pushed intensely with each contraction, they were now about 2-5 minutes apart, depending on intensity. 

This continued for a couple of hours, finally around 4 PM, tia could feel herself beginning to bulge. As she made the next push, she reached down with her hand. As she pushed, she could feel something beginning to bulge her skin out. She knew now that the head was just inside. About another hour past, the entire time she could feel this bulging with each push. After sometime she was finally made aware of the heads arrival in the opening as she could feel herself open up slightly. She immediately reached down and could feel the top of her daughters head in her vaginal opening. With the end of the push she could feel the head slide back in as her opening closed up. She was excited at this, but she knew that there was a lot more work to come to get the head out. She had watched videos of birth, and knew that this next step in her birth could take some serious time and effort to progress that baby out of her. 

Tia Continued working to push as she sat upon her birth stool. With each push her daughters head would open her vagina, and bulge to the same spot. Then it would slowly slip back inside and close her vagina at the end of the contraction. This work continued for another hour as Tia pressed on attempting to free the baby from her womb. Tia decided that she needed to use the bathroom. After a push she stood up from the birth stool. She could feel the baby slide way back inside as her legs closed to Stand. She walked into the bathroom and sat down on the toilet. It was hard to go but she was able to a little bit. She endured another push as she sat. Next she returned to the living room area to keep pushing. She sat upon the stool once more and began trying to push her baby free of her belly. Another 2 hours passed until finally with the next push, the head made some progress. Tia reached down to feel the head bulging out a little ways, from what she could feel only about 20% of the head was in the opening and she already felt stretched. The other 80% still remained clenched behind her tight vaginal skin. She kept making pushes, with each push she could feel the baby pushing against the opening, but not making any forward progress. Essentially the baby was stuck. The babies head did not recede back inside after a push, but It didn't progress forward during a push. To add to her concerns, she could feel the baby wiggling as she pushed. The baby wanted out, but it wasn’t fitting. Not to be discouraged, she kept on pushing. This continued for about another hour. However to her disbelief, even with consistent pushing, the babies had refused to budge. Finally she knew that it was time to get something to eat, she needed to maintain her energy to get the baby to come out. As she stood up the baby did not recede back inside. The head simply remained in place. This made it very difficult to walk, so she had to waddle to the kitchen. Babies head poking out in between her legs. As she attempted to make food she continued to have contractions. Each time a contraction over took her she would squat down and attempt to push the babies head out. However no progress was made. Once the food was prepped she ate quickly standing up as waddling back to the couch would take too much effort. She eventually return to the couch and continue pushing. This went on for another hour. There was some progress made, but still only about 30% of the head was outside of her vagina. 70% of her daughters large head was still within her tight skin. She could feel that the baby inside was becoming impatient, the baby started wiggling much more vigorously in order to attempt a free itself from her womb. However between her pushing and the babies wiggling, the tight clenches of her vagina were not going to allow the baby to come out. Another tense couple hours of pushing passed. It was now getting on to 9pm. The babies head was at best 40% bulged out at this point. Still so much of the head remained trapped inside. Tia could handle no more. She needed rest. 

Tia waddled to her bed as the head remained pressed in her opening. As she laid back she reached down to feel the babies stuck head. It was dry now as it had been bulging out for so long. She tried wiggling it around with her hand, but the skin was so tight she couldn’t budge it. After a couple more contractions, Tia passed out into sleep. 

She awoke… It was morning time, somehow she had slept the night and slept through most contractions. She had been up several times during hard contractions, but managed to fall back asleep. She reached down to find babies head in the exact same place. Stuck. It was 7 am and she waddled to the living room. Tia placed a mirror in front of the birth stool now to see her babies head as she labored. She worked but with no prevail. The baby was simply stuck. At 9am the door bell rang…

“Hell!” Tia said aloud. 

She quickly tossed a robe on and waddled to the door. She opened it. 

“Package for Tia.” The delivery man said. 

As tia reached out to grab the package she was struck with a hardcore contraction, she had no choice but to squat and push.

“Oh my god, are you ok?” Asked the delivery man 

“Yeah, um food poising cramps, yeah not good.” Tia muttered.

“Ok as long as your good.” The delivery man said as he gave her a storage look.

“Yeah I’m good, thanks.” Tia said. 

The man walked away and tia closed the door. During the intense push she felt something happen. She pulled the robe off and sat upon the birth stool. She looked into the mirror and noticed something. She was Crowning! The head was now about 80% out, almost full crown. It was absolutely huge. Her vaginal skin around the head was so stretched that it was bleach white in color. She was being stretched to the physical max. But still 20% of the head was inside! Tia pushed and pushed hard. 

“AHHHHHH COME OUT!” She yelped as she gave it her all. 

She could feel an intense tearing pain as she pushed. Finally her vagina gave in and released the babies head. It was absolutely massive. She next felt the baby rotate inside her. Now the shoulders had to come. She pushed hard and to her surprise the baby basically just slipped out. The head was thankfully the largest and hardest part. The baby began crying and tia was relieved. She was now a mother, and had a new best friend, Her daughter.

Siffrin is like. 26 at the YOUNGEST to me. Most of them are in their mid to late 20s (early 30s maybe) besides odile who *I* think is mid to late 40s

I did hear the word of god descriptions before considering their ages, so my hcs are compliant with them, but the word of god does all seem right to me. Except ironically the one canon age range (preteen Bonnie) is the only one that seems off; if they weren’t called a preteen I’d assume them to be like 8. (As opposed to, I define preteen as 11 or 12, mayybe 10. aka the ages that would also be called “teen” if not for linguistics.)

But yeah Siffrin is soo 28 to me, definitely within 26-31. Old enough that they’re quite settled into their sense of self and the patterns of their adult life, but not so old as to be totally set in it (or desperately trying to change it). They’re sort of still just muddling along, but they’re very good at it by now! At the very least, they’re used to it, used to pretending it’s fine, but not yet quite so sick of it that they can’t pretend anymore. Not quite.

Mirabelle and Isabeau do have more youthful insecurity imo. I put Mirabelle at 22 because to me that’s the age where it feels like everybody you grew up with is graduating right now and getting job offers in their chosen field, but not you, because you’re a failure. Any younger and you’re all still in college together (or if not, then working 30-40 hours a week is almost more grown up of you than being in school). Any older and everyone’s doing different things anyway. But at exactly 22, being even just one semester behind feels like a huge difference, like nothing you’ve done matters in the face of the one thing you haven’t. (ofc, Vaugarde doesn’t have the same schooling system as irl modern USA, but it’s about the vibes okay.)

And then Isabeau’s 24 because that’s when everyone is doing different things anyway. You’ve realized that the social structure of school, the cliques, the competition, isn’t really how it works as an adult. You are out there in the world on your own and it’s time to figure out what makes you happy instead of your friends or teachers. And, a couple years into working, you might be realizing that the career path you were so sure of really doesn’t suit you at all! And it’s scary to change, and waste all that hard work you’ve done. But, at 24, it hasn’t been that long since you graduated high school, and less since you graduated college (or if not college, you still may have tried a couple different towns or a couple different groups of roommates). You’ve upended your entire life at least once if not several times in recent memory, so even though it’s scary, doing it once more doesn’t feel as impossible as it would for someone who’s been doing the same thing for the last twenty years straight.

Speaking of which, Odile! Admittedly half the reason I made her 43 was self-indulgent ship reasons. But! I also think it makes sense. She’s been out of school just as long as she’s been in it. She had been doing approximately the same thing for the last 15+ years, so leaving is a huge upheaval. But she’s young enough to still have the energy for travel — she sure feels old next to Mirabelle, and she is slower and achier, but she’s also still perfectly able to fight, hike, and camp. (ofc, many older people can still do these things, but I feel like once you get past 50 it starts being mostly just the people who have been consistently doing these things all along.) Also, 40 is just The mid-life crisis age, y’know? So at 40 she starts wanting a change, and then time goes so fast once you’re settled into adult life plus going to the other side of the world is a huge undertaking, so it takes a couple years. But by 43 she’s done it, she’s made the change!

Then I made Bonnie 12 because according to purely my own intuition, I think 4 is maybe the oldest age Bonnie could’ve been when running away that wouldn’t leave them with some solid memory of their parents, and even then it would probably take close to 8 years to have forgotten them to such an extent and grown to be relatively well-adjusted. And I went for the max running away age because oh my god Nille. And I put Nille at the top of her word of god age range - 21 - because oh my god Nille. Babies taking care of babies. At least this way she was a full teen and they were a preschooler!!

I Want To Know More About RakuRan Q&A Series (1994)

Volumes 12 and 14 of Rakudai Ninja Rantarou contain a 100-question Q&A session with the author, Amako Soubee. Compiled from reader letters and an article published in the Asahi Elementary School Newspaper on October 26, 1993, it goes over questions about the manga's characters, settings, and the author herself. Because it was relatively early in the series, many of the questions are about things that would go on to be included in the manga and anime themselves, such as surnames, the characters' families, and characters' likes and dislikes. However, I wanted to translate some of the more interesting or fun questions.

Questions About the Manga

Q. What is Rantarou's hobby? A. Reading books. Q. What's Rantarou's least favorite food? A. He doesn't have one. Q. Rantarou's favorite word? A. Effort (努力, douryoku). Q. Why did Rantarou develop astigmatism? A. Probably because of reading too many books(?) and genetics. Q. Shinbei's family is rich, so why does he want to become a ninja? A. Because he has such a gentle personality, he was enrolled in the school to teach him to be clever and quick-witted. Q. How does Shinbei produce so much snot if he doesn't have a nose? A. Of course he has a nose. It's just that his cheeks are so puffy that you can't see the nostrils. Q. Will Shinbei still have a runny nose when he's an adult? A. I'm sure he'll be properly blowing his nose by then. Q. If Shinbei's head is so hard, why does he get bumps when he's hit? A. Hmmm. Maybe it depends on where he's hit, or his mental preparedness… Q. What does Shinbei worry about? A. Gaining weight and having bad grades. Q. How many part-time jobs has Kirimaru had? A. An endless number of jobs. At least over fifty by now. Q. What does Kirimaru dream about when he sleeps? A. He dreams about swimming in money. Q. What kind of ninjutsu are Rantarou and his friends good at? A. Tonjutsu, the ninja art of escape. Q. Will Rantarou and everyone become proper ninja? A. I'm sure they will. Q. Is there anything that can cure Doi-sensei's stomachaches? A. Class 1-Ha getting good grades. Q. What kind of women does Doi-sensei like? A. He's got his hands full with the students, so he doesn't think about it much right now… Q. Do Doi-sensei and Yamada-sensei ever teach the kunoichi class? A. They do. Q. Why does Kisanta love slugs? A. Because they're cute. Q. Shouzaemon has good grades, so why is he in the failing Class 1-Ha? A. It's not like 1-Ha is just for students with failing grades. It's a class full of unique kids. Q. Does Ninjutsu Academy have an entrance exam? A. It doesn't have an entrance exam, but it does have a graduation exam. Q. What do the teachers do on spring and summer breaks? A. They do things like study, train themselves, and visit students at home.

Questions About the Author

Q. When do you draw manga? A. In the middle of the night. Q. When do you go to bed and wake up? A. I go to bed at 10pm and wake up at 2am. Q. How long do you draw manga for every day? A. Six or seven hours. Q. How long does it take you to complete one day's worth of serialization in Asahi Elementary School Newspaper¹ (three pages in the manga volumes)? A. About five hours. Q. Where do you get ideas? A. They come to me when I'm drawing. Q. Is it fun to draw RakuRan? A. It's fun, but it's also hard work. Q. What do you pay attention to the most when drawing RakuRan? A. How fun or interesting it is. Q. Are the characters in RakuRan based on real people? A. Most of them aren't, but Yuki, Tomomi, and Ooki-sensei are. Q. How do you create your characters? A. Sometimes their design comes from their personality, and sometimes their personality comes from their design. For example, I designed Shinbei based off of his gentle personality. Q. Who's your favorite character? A. I love all the characters. Q. How do you get good at drawing ninja? A. By carefully studying the movements of athletes as well as ninja characters in period dramas. ¹ Asahi Elementary School Newspaper (Asahi Shougakusei Shinbun, 朝日小学���新聞) is a daily newspaper aimed at younger children that's been published since 1967. Rakudai Ninja Rantarou ran in its pages for 33 years (1986-2019). ² "Goushuu Ondou" (江州音頭) is an ondou (traditional Japanese dance song) that originated in Shiga prefecture, formerly known as Goushuu. "The Hill Overlooking the Harbor" (Minato Ga Mieru Oka, 港が見える丘) is a pop song released in 1947 and sung by Hirano Aiko. "When Dawn Breaks" (Yo Ga Akete, 夜が明けて) is a pop song released in 1971 and sung by Sakamoto Sumiko. ³ Soldiers of Fortune (Fuunjitachi, 風雲児たち) is a historical comedy manga by Minamoto Tarou that ran from 1979 to 1998; it continued in spin-offs and sequels until the author's death in 2021. out of curiosity, are you an only child? I'm one of four brothers (aged 2-26) and have multiple estranged half siblings, and I've always found the way you write familial interactions between the brothers to be just. incredibly realistic and raw

Especially between Leo and Donnie - their interactions in your writing will occasionally (bar the codependency...) parallel interactions between my older brother and I to a T and it's. so touching

at my high school graduation, my brother took a very expensive trip home for two days just to walk me down the aisle. i did a speech and wasn't nervous at all bc every SINGLE time i looked out at the crowd he was looking at me with the fucking BIGGEST smile on his face

after my sister moved out and went to university she called me every single day

there was a girl that was going after my brother against his wishes and my sister picked up the phone when she called and threatened her so hard that she never talked to my brother again and like ten years later he was like 'yeah she just gave up one day idk what happened' and we were like 'um sister happened' and he was like 'WAIT WHAT' LMAO

for years me and bonus brother #1 would steal sister's phone and make her background a selfie of us and she never changed it and even one year was like 'hey the selfie is super old can you guys take a new one'

i also have a photo saved on my phone after bonus brother #1 got out of a surgery legit in his hospital bed with the caption 'i lived bitch'

i have been wearing a jean jacket i stole from bonus brother #2 for years and last time he saw me i was wearing it and he did not even remember it was his anymore

every snapchat i've taken of bonus brother #2 is captioned with 'bitch'

last christmas we did powerpoint presentations over discord. sister assigned everyone roles in star wars. brother provided a satirical how-to on home maintenance. bonus brother #1 talked about magic the gathering.

My One Big Problem with Season 2

I touched on this in my Season 2 Review, but I wanted to take the opportunity to go more in-depth with it. As I said, I absolutely adored Season 2, but I took issue with the way it handled Scully and Mulder saving each other. As I’ve always said, mutual rescuing is my absolute favorite trope so long as it’s balanced. For all the things Season 2 did well, it absolutely fell short in terms of feeling balanced in that regard, and I (along with seemingly many others) ended the season frustrated, feeling as though Scully was always being snatched up and Mulder was always rushing to save her. I wanted to explore the ways in which Season 2 creates that impression (it’s not as simple as you might think!) and talk about what I think they could have done differently to avoid leaving this damsel-in-distress impression on so many viewers.

By the Numbers

For the purposes of this analysis, here are the times in Season 2 where Scully rescues Mulder (some of these are a bit ambiguous, so if you don’t count them, that’s totally valid):

Red Museum

Excelsis Dei (this barely counts)

Aubrey

End Game

Anasazi

And here are the times where Mulder rescues Scully:

Duane Barry/Ascension/One Breath (technically he fails, but this arc is so instrumental to Scully’s damsel-in-distress vibe throughout the season that I had to include it).

Now, if your viewing experience was anything like mine, these numbers will surprise you. I would have 100% guessed that Mulder’s numbers (as in, the number of times he saved Scully) would be higher. So clearly something is at play here besides just “number of times saved.” Let’s dig a little deeper, shall we?

Here is Mulder’s total time spent in peril throughout the season. This was a bit hard to quantify, as most of his times in danger are slow descents into trouble rather than abrupt transitions, so the moments when he goes from “not in danger” to “in danger” are a bit ambiguous. Take these numbers with a grain of salt.

Little Green Men (From the time he finds the body until Scully wakes him up): 08:40

Red Museum: 00:15 (!!!)

Excelsis Dei: 03:14

Aubrey (Including the time after Scully arrives before BJ drops the razor): 01:13

End Game (From the time the Alien Bounty Hunter starts beating him up until Scully begins her voiceover): 04:00

Anasazi (From the moment his dad is shot until he wakes up in New Mexico): 08:39

Total: 26:01

Average time per episode (out of all episodes in peril): 04:20

Here is Scully’s total time in peril. This was much easier to quanitfy. Since Duane Barry’s scene was more or less repeated in Ascension, I didn’t count it. I didn’t include One Breath in this calculation, but I wouldn’t fault you if you did.

Ascension: 45:10 (The whole episode!)

Irresistible: 06:37

End Game: 08:41

Our Town: 04:21

Total: 1:04:49 - A 149% increase from Mulder’s time!

Average time per episode in peril: 16:12 - A 274% increase from Mulder’s time!

I am aware that Ascension skews this last statistic, so if we exclude that entirely, Scully’s average time in peril per episode is 06:33 - still a 51% increase from Mulder’s time.

If we assume that every episode is 45 minutes long, this means that:

For every episode featuring Mulder in peril, he spends on average 9.6% of that episode actively in danger.

For every episode featuring Scully in peril, she spends on average 36% of that episode actively in danger (14.5% if you exclude Ascension entirely).

So despite technically being saved fewer times, Scully spends a lot more time actively in peril than Mulder does throughout the season, both in total and per episode featuring her needing rescuing, by a pretty significant margin. This is one of the major factors in my next point.

Central to the Episode

Let’s explore how relevant Scully and Mulder’s damsel-in-distress moments are to the episodes they feature in, as well as how that might impact our viewer perception of these moments, and the impressions they leave in our memory.

For Mulder:

Little Green Men: This is an episode about Mulder’s desperate search for the truth against all obstacles, and how Scully will continue to follow him even after they’ve been separated. While the Puerto Rican government is a looming threat, I wouldn’t consider this a “Mulder in danger” episode.

Red Museum: This episode features a VERY brief moment of Mulder in danger. You could remove the moment and the episode would change very little.

Excelsis Dei: Same as Red Museum.

Aubrey: Same as Red Museum and Excelsis Dei.

End Game: Given that Scully has to go searching for Mulder, this is probably the closest thing we get to a direct role reversal for them. I would call this a “Mulder in danger” episode, but I do have other issues with it which I’ll get into later.

Anasazi: Also a “Mulder in danger” episode, but I would argue that it’s just as much about the alien lore, the plot, and the mystery as it is about Mulder being in peril/needing saving.

Now for Scully:

Duane Barry/Ascension/One Breath: This is an entire arc about her being in danger. Her being in danger is the story.

Irresistible: This is an episode about Scully’s trauma and the emotional walls she builds up as a result. Her being taken is instrumental to the episode’s arc as well as her character development. It is the center of the episode.

End Game: You could rewrite this episode without her being kidnapped, but her kidnapping propels much of the episode’s plot. Many of the episode’s emotional threads are tied to her kidnapping and the resulting hostage exchange. It would be difficult to rewrite this episode without her kidnapping.

Our Town: You could rewrite this episode without Scully being taken, but her kidnapping is absolutely central to the episode’s climax rather than tangential.

So, in general, when Mulder is in peril, it is tangential to the episode’s plot (there are two exceptions: we’ll get there). When Scully is in peril, it is the episode’s plot. This creates a much stronger impression in the viewer’s mind, and makes us much more likely to remember these episodes and these damsel-in-distress moments for Scully rather than Mulder.

But this isn’t the only reason why these moments resonate so much more when they happen to our favorite medical doctor/FBI agent/badass. Which leads me to my next point…

Agency and Bodily Autonomy

Both Mulder and Scully’s moments in peril tend to follow trends, but these trends are often opposites of each other. You’ll see what I mean.

Here is what (generally) happens when Mulder is in danger:

He makes the choice to seek out the episode’s villain wherever they’re currently hiding out (Red Museum, Aubrey, End Game)

He either tells someone where he’s going (Red Museum, Aubrey) or he doesn’t (Little Green Men, End Game) Either way, it’s his choice.

He willingly enters a fight with the episode’s villain and is overpowered either very briefly (Red Museum, Aubrey) or maybe for a bit longer (End Game).

Even when overpowered, he usually maintains some level of bodily autonomy. The only exceptions are Little Green Men and End Game while he’s unconscious, but he maintains bodily autonomy up until that point.

The only significant exception to this formula is Anasazi.

Here is what (generally) happens when Scully is in danger:

She begins somewhere completely ordinary (her apartment, her car, a motel room, a civilian’s house).

She is forcibly taken from this ordinary place by the episode’s villain and moved somewhere else against her will. She doesn’t know where she is, and couldn’t tell someone where she’s going even if she wanted to.

Here are some images of Scully throughout season 2:

Wow, you think, she must be having a rough day. Wrong! These are from 4 separate episodes. Notice how her bodily autonomy is taken away in all 4 of these photos. Her hands are also bound in 3 of these, you just can’t see it.

So, to recap, Mulder usually has free choice when he seeks out danger, while Scully rarely does. Of course her work is dangerous, but the moments when she is in the most danger are never due to her own choices. And Mulder always maintains his bodily autonomy even when in peril, while Scully doesn’t. This creates the impression that she is in more danger, more in need of rescuing, more powerless, and less able to handle herself.

Not to be the loud feminist in the room (just kidding-always be the loud feminist in the room!), but when your female character is always the one having her choice and bodily autonomy taken away, you have a problem. And I didn’t even touch on what it’s implied she went through while she was abducted.

On the topic of trends…

Variety vs. Repetition

So despite the trends in Mulder’s damsel-in-distress moments that I just listed, there are also several differences. Let’s explore what technically happens to him in each instance.

Little Green Men: Encounters aliens in Puerto Rico and passes out while the military is coming to kill him.

Red Museum: Locked in the meat processing plant as it’s about to be set on fire.

Excelsis Dei: Locked in the bathroom filling with water.

Aubrey: BJ knocks him over and holds a razor to his throat.

End Game: Gets beaten up by the Alien Bounty Hunter, encounters an alien retrovirus, is left on the ice to freeze, and nearly dies from exposure to said retrovirus.

Anasazi: Starts acting irrationally due to drugged water and becomes a murder suspect. Is very nearly implicated in said murder, and it’s strongly implied that he would have died had he been convicted.

Now, there are patterns in here (as discussed above), but for the most part, these are different enough that they didn’t feel repetitive while I was watching. In fact, Red Museum, Excelsis Dei, and Aubrey are consecutive episodes, and I didn’t realize Mulder had been in danger 3 times in a row until I went back and reviewed the episode list.

Scully, on the other hand:

Duane Barry/Ascension/One Breath: Kidnapped by Duane Barry/aliens or maybe the government.

Irresistible: Kidnapped by Donnie Pfaster.

End Game: Kidnapped by the Alien Bounty Hunter.

Our Town: Kidnapped by Chaco and the cannibalistic cult.

*sigh* This would be laughable if it didn’t play so hard into the female character damsel-in-distress trope. Part of the reason it feels like Scully is in danger so much is because every time she is in danger it’s exactly the same (refer to the photos above again for more proof if you need it).

Another irritating thing about this is that Scully’s kidnappings get less necessary as they go along. So not only do viewers become sick of seeing the same thing over and over again, they also get annoyed because it didn’t need to happen and yet they’re seeing it again. At least, I did. To be clear on this:

Duane Barry/Ascension/One Breath: Necessary for offscreen reasons which trumps all else. We support maternity leave on this blog! I also read that Gillian Anderson went back to work very quickly, so even though I missed Scully during this arc, I wouldn’t have minded if had been longer solely for that reason.

Irresistible: A very important follow-up to Scully’s abduction. Was (in my opinion) crucial to Scully’s character arc. Maybe she didn’t need to get kidnapped, but the episode is much stronger because of it.

End Game: The point where I started to get annoyed. Central to the episode? Yes. Necessary from a writing standpoint? No.

Our Town: Now, they could have done another Irresistible-esque parallel here, but they didn’t. So I was left feeling like you could exchange Scully and Mulder’s roles and very little would change.

Suffice to say, I was very annoyed by the end of Our Town.

So, to recap what we have thus far:

Scully spends more time, overall and per episode, in danger than Mulder does.

When Scully is in danger, it is more central to the episode’s plot than when Mulder is in danger, making her moments in peril more memorable to the audience.

When Scully is in danger, she loses her agency and bodily autonomy, making her seem weaker in comparison to Mulder than she actually is.

Scully’s damsel-in-distress moments all follow the same pattern, making their repetition more noticeable than when Mulder is in danger multiple times.

There are, however, two exceptions to these rules. Let’s get into them.

End Game and Anasazi

As I said a while back, these are the season’s only two “Mulder in danger” episodes (in my opinion. You could make a case for Little Green Men, too).

To recap:

The Colony/End Game two-parter begins with Mulder dying in the hospital, and we spend the rest of the story figuring out how he got there. Scully has to use every resource in her arsenal to track him down (despite him actively trying to ditch her). She then rushes to Alaska, realizes he’s been exposed to the retrovirus, and basically brings him back from the dead all on her own.

Anasazi features an obviously unwell Mulder descending into madness, and we as viewers are right there with Scully as she tries to figure out what’s happening to him. She figures out that his water is being poisoned, shoots him to stop him from killing Krycek (which would have led to a murder conviction and probably death), and drives him to New Mexico, risking her career and probably her life.

Now, I don’t want to downplay the awesomeness of these moments, because they’re undoubtedly badass and fantastic! But there is a through line between them that gave me pause.

I’m sure many of us remember what Mulder says to Scully in Anasazi. But in case we’ve forgotten, here it is:

Thank you for taking care of me.

And that’s the commonality. In both of her biggest instances of saving Mulder, Scully fills the role of the caretaker in at least some capacity. When Mulder saves her, he usually has to chase after some bad guys with a gun in a more traditionally heroic style.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love Doctor Scully just as much as the next person, and I’m not even saying that one form of rescuing is inherently better than the other.

But when your male character is always being the traditionally heroic one and your female character is always caretaking in their most significant instances of saving one another…

Again, not to be the loud feminist in the room *waves in proud loud feminist*, but there’s some gender stereotypes at play there that I’m not the biggest fan of.

Don’t misunderstand me. I think that Scully, both as a character and as a female character specifically, is much stronger than these flaws. But that doesn’t mean I won’t point them out.

But Phoebe, What Should They Have Done Differently?

So glad you asked! Now, I’m not going to pretend I’m aware of all the network restrictions, budget stuff, external factors etc. that they were dealing with, but here’s a few ideas off the top of my head.

Now, I’m going to start this section by saying this: I am aware that Scully being repeatedly taken away was a major theme of this season. I don’t think that theme needs to disappear, but I think there are better ways of incorporating it than having her get kidnapped the same way four times.

I read this excellent post by @bakedbakermom about how every episode of S2 after Scully’s abduction is about her abduction in some way. I agree, and I think the show could have developed those parallels more overtly if they wanted to keep the theme of “there is this constant threat of Scully being taken away and what does it mean for our pair?” Here are some ways they could have done that:

More conversations like the one in Firewalker: Mulder wanting to protect Scully from everything, Scully insisting on going back anyway. There’s lots of good conflict there that could have led to some very tense episodes while still keeping the theme alive without Scully actually getting kidnapped.

Any one of the episodes could have been interspersed with abduction flashbacks or something of the like, further highlighting the parallels.

I am of the belief that Mulder needs to heal from the abduction trauma just as much as Scully, but in a very different way. You could have an episode where he sees another person he has to protect, there’s some sort of parallel and Scully knows why he cares so much. She tries to pull him back but all he remembers is her crying for help over the answering machine and he gets in too deep. That would have been such a good episode😫

And if you’re hell bent on putting Scully in danger, here are some new ways to do that:

Maybe she gets infected with a parasite thingy and she has to figure out how to cure herself and it brings up both her worst fears of being powerless and needing help and Mulder’s fears of not being able to help her.

Let her step into Mulder’s shoes! Maybe she meets someone whose trauma parallels her own and she gets too invested in helping them and she knows the risks but runs into danger anyway. Our girl can still have agency, even if she needs saving!

Maybe she chases some bad guys into the woods and gets knocked out or something and Mulder just kind of has to watch over her until help comes and it’s a good way to have her in danger plus Mulder angst without kidnapping her again.

And this doesn’t fit into the theme but for fuck’s sake, you can have the theme of Scully being taken and still let Mulder get kidnapped or be a traditional damsel-in-distress! It won’t ruin the theming! In fact, I think it would strengthen it. It would be an awesome Scully moment, and I think it would be an interesting character study, because Mulder is always so worried about Scully that he never stops to think about himself. Who knows how a brush with death like that would affect him? Or how having to rush after him while the clock is ticking would affect Scully? All would provide interesting perspectives on the season’s theme! (Plus, Anasazi confirmed to me that Mulder is such a good damsel-in-distress. It’s the puppy energy).

Conclusion

So, I don’t hate the number of times Scully needs saving this season, but I do take issue with how it’s done. A little more variety, some more switching up Mulder and Scully’s roles, and closer attention to the gender stereotypes they were touching on, all would have made all the difference.

Like I said, I loved Season 2. So many things about it were wonderful, and like Scully, I think the season is stronger than its flaws. This was an in-depth analysis on where the season faltered (in my opinion) and what I might have done differently. It is not hate towards any of the X-Files writers, actors, crew, etc.

1. robin/finney

they met at 14, downtown in denver, colorado; finney had ditched some bullies successfully, and was making his way around. he was about to buy something for gwen, he was saving the money for her birthday in two months and figured now was as good a time as any, right?; robin was ditching his family—bored of meetings and mergers and shaking hands with some business partners’ daughter. he was running down the street. they make eye contact at a street light. they don’t know what caused them to look up, but they did. and—woah. robin blinks, finney smiles and looks back at the side of the street he’s on—the path he hasn’t walked down yet and jerks his head for robin to follow. entire day is spent joking and laughing with death-defying stunts and running from cops. they tried to keep in touch but when finney got home, gift in hand for gwen—his dad took his phone and broke it in two. robin lost the paper with finney’s number on it and couldn’t remember it. on the mission—finney says he thinks he wants to go on a walk before their shift starts. robin’s on his way back to the penthouse to get vance and billy.

they meet, again, at 23. it’s across the street. finney jerks his head for robin to follow and, of course, he does.

2. bruce/vance

bruce is pretty sure vance is going to kill him. they’re on the playground and everyone knows not to mess with vance on the playground because he’s eight and everyone else is slightly younger or older and vance doesn’t like anyone messing with him and always plays alone. bruce is closer to his age than anyone else, so they shoved him to vance in an effort to make him be nicer. bruce got shoved a little too hard and knocked vance over—hence the cowering beneath the slide. vance comes over and asks why bruce is hiding and bruce squeaks out that he didn’t mean to push vance he just wanted to play and talk. he didn’t mean it. vance, a child, goes: “nobody means to do anything. you still did it though.” so bruce says he’s sorry and vance holds out a hand and tells him they can play together as long as bruce stops crying. they are playground friends for about three years from 7 & 8 to 10 & 11, they drift apart to different schools in different cities. they meet again at 25 and 26, vance has blood on his cheek, finishing with the body in the alley; bruce is getting back from a shift at the Peninsula, stumped; he paralyzed a guy in his hotel room thinking he had intel on Red in his briefcase but it wasn’t anything worthwhile. bruce almost trips on the asphalt and vance catches him— they recognize each other immediately from the making out in an elevator thing, but not as childhood friends until bruce does that thing he does when he’s happy—that little twitch of his finger again. then it clicks. vance is ecstatic and bruce is too—but noticing the blood he asks what happened, vance says it wasn’t his. vance asks who’s briefcase that is—it has the wrong initials. bruce says it’s not his either. then, of course: “how do you feel about coffee?” vance rubs the drying flecks of blood off and says he would love to. they hold hands on their way.

3. billy/griffin

billy wanted his attention, is how it started. really! he just wanted to annoy griffin, but he couldn’t just annoy him after a while—scowling was good enough, he needed a smile, a giggle, a wrinkle of his nose, a frown, a pout—anything and everything; even at 11 and 12. griffin wasn’t in the habit of giving in to billy showalter and he didn’t plan on starting to then. it was a game, always a game with them; one that only really ends with billy gets foster parents in new york. they’re both heartbroken but—griffin moves on with evan and billy moves on with his new family. they meet again, really meet, first day on the assignment. griffin’s delivering the drinks—comms off on his end, because too many people are whispering and laughing and the mic catches it. he holds out his tray for the drink order; paperboy turns around, scar visible on his cheek.

Giving you and Edward privacy, Evita goes back to the bonfire. She does give one last look to the vampire, as if wondering if it was okay to leave you alone with something like him. Regardless, Evita leaves, carrying her bag that held the ritual items she would have used.

You watch her figure join the bundles of trees just to make sure she was heading in the right direction. Satisfied that she’d find her way safely, you turn to Edward who offers his hand out to you. “Care to join me for a walk?”

Hesitant fingers slide along his cold hand. Your body temperatures were solar opposites. The two colliding sent a rippling tingling that started from your palm and up your arm. Edward felt it too as he his body jolts slightly from the sensation.

“Alice called you?” You ask as you fall into step alongside him. “She said you were at Bella’s with the Denalis.”

He nods. “Yeah. But I told them there was somewhere I needed to be. Alice was freaking out. I think I freaked out a little bit more. . .”

The gentle singing of the river gets closer the further you and Edward delve into the forest. Leisurely you bump into one another in a soothing rhythm, wandering with no real destination.

“How is she doing? Bella? I saw her sometime ago and we had lunch.” You hadn’t gained the courage to call her yourself. While the two of you had spoken in a civil manner, you were still uncomfortable with the thought of ringing her up yourself. Jacob wanted friendship to blossom between you and Bella, but it was too soon for that. Especially with Edward making a stance and choosing to go after you.

“Healthy. Healthy and safe.” That was all he ever wanted for Bella. You nod and move to continue along the riverbank but Edward stops you. “Wait. I know we’re fated to be together, but I feel like there is still so much I don’t know about you. You probably know more about me.”

What was there to know about you? Before turning into a wolf, your life had been normal. So normal that it could border on being mind painfully boring. A life of rinse and repeat. Wake up, go to school, come home, do homework, then go to bed to do it all over again the next day. Occasionally on the weekends your small family might go out for a refreshing hike or even fishing.

Going on to tell Edward of your simple life on the reservation, you describe your mother and father; both hard working people and yet always generous to those who had even less n than you did. Like when Harry Clearwater died, they made sure Sue and her kids were fed for weeks. Your mom would stay up late preparing casserole dishes and other easy to heat up meals so that Sue wouldn’t have to worry about her family eating. They even picked up Seth (along with the others) for carpool.

Never wanting them to worry more than they needed to, you tried your entire childhood to be a good kid. Being a wolf though changed that. Now constantly worried about your wellbeing, all you could do was give them hollow promises that you would be safe. That was not the job of a Quileute wolf though. Combating danger was. And fighting vampires guaranteed that you were never safe.

“Do they know about me?” Hesitantly he brings up the imprinting. Unsure of how much your parents really knew about your others life.

Pursing your lips, you relent. “To an extent. They don’t really know imprinting itself but they understand that something is going on between us, whatever that may be. But they don’t know what you or the rest of your family are. Just that you’re descendants from the stories that we tell of the Cold Ones.”

Not it mention that they probably thought you still had a crush on Embry. Your parents saw it immediately when both of you were small children. Their giggles could be heard whenever you and Embry hung out and they were home. Worse was when Quil threatened to tell Embry at one point if you didn’t do whatever he said. That threat didn’t hold up when your hurled your small body at him and pinned him to the ground; hissing that you would spit in his face right then and there if he promised to keep it a secret.

“You know, I still don’t know much about you either. I know that you were the first vampire Carlisle created, but nothing else.” What you really wanted to know was what was his life like when he was a human. But you realize how sensitive that topic could be. His human family was definitely dead by now.

His gaze warms thoughtfully. When he spoke, along with fondness came the sting of sorrow. “Before Carlisle saved me from the Spanish influenza, I grew up in Chicago with a vacant father and a loving mother. Nothing particularly exciting happened during that time. I was seventeen when my mom and I got sick.”

That tender smile twitched downward for a split second at the memory of his mom and the day he became an immortal. You couldn’t imagine losing your own mother the same day you discovered you could live forever.

Edward notices the sad gleam on your face and he makes sure to lift his lips back up into an easygoing grin. “Don’t be sad. I’ve had many decades to mourn and grieve and really understand the opportunity she wanted me to have. With this life I was able to get not one, but two medical degrees, learn a handful of languages, and so much more.”

He truly had lived much longer than you. You were still the young and naive age of sixteen despite looking like a full grown adult thanks to the wolf transformation.

“That’s incredible. I’ve never been out of the state of Washington.” You bemoan and pick through the rocks that lined the slow trickle of water.

He laughs a little. “You still have plenty of time to change that. I never left Illinois when I was human either. There was the option of boarding school out of state, but I didn’t feel comfortable leaving my mom alone.” Edward sits down along the bank with a sigh and leans his head back. The sky was already a dark blanket with stars embroidered into it. His skin nearly glowed in the starlight.

You wouldn’t learn everything about him in one single night. For now, this was enough.

Evita couldn’t help but release a relieved breath as she walked out of the thick of trees and back to Sam Uley’s house. Happy that she didn’t have to perform a life changing spell like that. While she was more than capable, there were a lot of things that could have gone wrong for her to intervene with strong forces. Edward and (y/n)’s differences may prove to be challenging, almost to impossible, but Evita had a good feeling that things would work out for them in the end. Patience and communication was required on both sides. (Y/n) had a good head on her shoulders though. At least from what Evita could see from the short amount of time they had known each other.

Already Evita could see the orange glow of the bonfire and hear many voices reveling. For a second, she felt a ping of homesickness. Being among the warmth of a close knit community had her longing for her family. She wouldn’t be able to go home for quite awhile. There was much work to do here. Her mother had understood the duty she felt and commended her daughter.

Most of the seats closest to the fire were already taken by other members of the pack and elder’s council. There was one seat however that was still empty. Next to the only other female wolf.

Leah right?” Evita walks up to her and points to the plastic folding chair propped next to her. “Is it okay if I take this seat?”

The she-wolf flicked her dark umber eyes over to the witch, nodding her consent silently. Leah observed Evita carefully as she sat. “Where’s (y/n)?”

Grinning, Evita looked back over her shoulder at the forest. “Thought I would let her and Edward have some privacy as they talk.”

That seemed to make her draw even further into herself. “I thought I smelled a leech.”

“Oh? What do vampires smell like to you?” She innocently asked with a cock of her head. Leah had never paused to really describe a vampire’s scent.

“Grossly sweet.” Was all she could find to explain.

Humming with thought, she leans back in her chair, her view filled with the laughing faces of the younger members of the pack and the thoughtful ones of the elders. “How funny and odd this world is.”

Leah didn’t think it was funny at all. More like some cruel joke that she would never get the hang of. In every single way, this whole wolf thing had royally messed up her life. There was no solace she could take.

She knew that if she told Evita about Jacob imprinting on her, that Evita wouldn’t find the world quite so funny.

It was on the tip of her tongue as bitterness nearly won her over. Evita was genuine though and only wanted to get to know the pack better. She was willing to protect them with her magic after all.

Gulping back whatever sour thing she could have said, Leah asked her “Was this your first time encountering vampires?”

“Yes. They weren’t quite as I imagined. A visiting witch came to our house one day and told us about them. How terrifying it is to be in front of one. Even of the massive coven called the Volturi.”

(y/n) had mentioned them too. If they were enough to make the Cullens fear them, then they must be a big deal.

Her concern was palpable and Evita told Leah reassuringly “Like I told the rest of the pack, I’ll do my best to protect everyone here in Forks. I just might need to call in one more person. . .”

Eyebrows lift quizzically, Leah sits up a little straighter. “Another witch?”

She nods. “I would have preferred my grandma to come, but she’s too old for traveling and my mom is too busy taking care of my sisters. There’s someone else I know. Thing is they’re in Haiti right now so it would take a while for them to fly here.”

“You don’t think you can do it by yourself?”

“I can make all the wards myself, but I won’t have enough energy to install them strategically around Forks. I would ask the pack to help me, but they need to have a proper knowledge of magic that would take me months to teach. And with the informants that the Volturi possess, who knows how long we have until they know about this Bella girl.”

Anxiety would have besieged Evita, it should have from all the responsibility. She was good under pressure though and knew that she shouldn’t waste her time worrying. Leah watched the expression of determination calm the witch’s features. Even if it was just herself, she would do the best she could.

“Calling your friend is always worth a shot. . .” Leah murmured; Evita’s beaming confidence was contagious. “You never know. Like you said, the world is odd and funny. They might be able to make it if they plan properly.”

Evita shot Leah a bright smile. “You’re right! I’m going inside to call her.”

Knowing she could offer appreciated assistance, Leah grins to herself and glances over at the dancing flames. Her rigid demeanor softened and one could say she was at peace with herself for but a moment.

Dramas for the first half of 2023

Now that we are six months into 2023, time to do one of these posts. I am gonna include both Korean and Chinese dramas, because why not and any drama I even checked out is on it.

DRAMAS WATCHED

29. Romance of Twin Flower  (China) - make it cease existing! My favorite het web novel got murdered and then had its grave spat on.

28. Dominator of Martial Gods  (China) - if MST3K still existed, this drama would be prime material for it.

27. Wanru’s Journey  (China) - acting. Try it!

26. Royal Rumors  (China) - they tried acting. But forgot to try having a functional screenplay on top.

25. The Last Princess  (China) - acting is nonexistent and the story is trash but it never aspired to be what it wasn’t and was kinda cute.

24. Oasis  (Korea) - great acting in a story with a screenplay that goes round and round fruitlessly like a hamster in a cage.

23. The Trust  (China) - the OTP in this one swaps bodies but it would have been better for everyone if whoever made this and an actual competent writer swapped theirs.

22. Snow Eagle Lord  (China) - yet another drama in which Xu Kai does his best to keep acting opposite a wooden costar and through a terrible screenplay. There is something seriously wrong with that man’s career choices.

21. Heartbeat  (Korea) - the good: it’s harmless. The bad: it’s harmless.

20. Back from the Brink  (China) - ummm the people are pretty? And if I were 10 I’d be all about this show but as is...

19. Joseon Attorney  (Korea) - slightly less fun than reading a legal treatise.

18. The Starry Love  (China) - the definition of a xianxia playing it safe and pastel; I did love the secondary couple a lot but it was not enough to save that snoozefest of a drama.

17. Chong Zi  (China) - badly acted and a screenplay that somehow manages to be both repetitive and disjointed. But I am a sucker for the shizunfucker trope so here we are.

16. Island  (Korea) - a mess but Kim Nam Gil is hot with a sword.

15. Circle of Love  (China) - rationally, a hot mess. But so entertaining and addicting and fall of make outs of epicness!

14. Lady Durian  (Korea) - makjang from the Queen of Makjang and with that scrumptious cast! This is gonna be GOOD!

13. The Forbidden Marriage  (Korea) - sweet and oddly charming despite nobody in it bothering to act much.

12. Pledge of Allegiance  (China) - the way they had to edit it likely due to censorship made it less than it what could have been but still more than most dramas this year.

11. Choice Husband (China) - delicious cliches and tropes and angst in the rain!

10. Hidden Love  (China) - to make ME of all people to care about a fluffy modern is a bona fide miracle but the two mains are chemistry machines who portray longing so well.

9. Gone with the Rain  (China) - wildly uneven but our heroine and the sexy general she eventually chooses are pure gold!

8. The Secret Romantic Guest House (Korea) - how to do youth sageuk right. Everything about this just works!

7. Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow  (Korea) - it has flaws but is so gorgeous and full of longing and grief and everything good!

6. Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938  (Korea) - a sequel/prequel that is almost as good as the original, how often does that happen?

5. See You In My 19th Life  (Korea) - wacky and grieving, delicate and odd, this is everything I ever want in a kdrama.

4. Call It Love  (Korea) - a truly exquisite story of trauma and loneliness and healing and love.

3. Till the End of the Moon  (China) - gloriously messy in every way this is just MORE. The ending is enraging and there are issues but when it hits, it hits so hard the rest of it does not matter - the dark characters, the dysfunctional love story, the battles, the insane visuals, the EVERYTHING of it. This is what fantasy should be like.

2. Chang Feng Du/Destined  (China) - came out of nowhere to own my heart via its story of growing up and finding love and slow organic relationship building and keeping your soul in a world of horrors.

1. The Ingenuous One  (China) - the best one, so I am gonna talk about it below.

FAVORITE DRAMA

The Ingenuous One - so impossibly solid, from acting to visuals to screenplay to EVERYTHING! Adult characters with adult issues and choices, both moral dilemmas and battles equally compelling. The love stories, the friendships, the shades of grey. This is utterly and completely adult.

WORST DRAMA

Romance of the Twin Flower - if I could make one drama cease to exist, this would be it.

FAVORITE MALE CHARACTER

Tantai Jin, Till The End of the Moon - the best character this year hands down - by turns (and timelines) unhinged monster, a contained saint, a victim of abuse trying to attain being viewed as human, a schemer, a ruler, grief personified, curiosity and monstrosity and nobility all mingled.

Runner up: Jang Uk, Alchemy of Souls - sunshine boy gone dark and grieving, but still with that same core of steel.

FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER

Shim Woo Joo, Call It Love - she’s damaged and impulsive and relationship-phobic and revenge driven and glorious!

Runner Up:  Shu Ya Nan (The Ingenuous One) - allowed to be tough and dark and with her own agenda and not a member of a good sect and just so cool.

NEEDS TO BE MURDERED

Han Dong Jin’s Mom, Call It Love - that woman was horrifying and the source of so much of his trauma; a real realistic monster petty in all ways except for the damage she inflicted.

FAVORITE SHIP

Gu Jiusi/Liu Yuru, Chang Feng Du - wholesome and helping each other grow and talking it out but also there is blood feeding and midnight rescues and everything. They are good but not in the least boring.

Li Gong Quan, The Ingenuous One - yeah whatever, I realize he’s a minor character but I loved him so much! The whole having to bring down your benefactor who’s gone evil tho you are in love with his daughter should have been a whole other drama!

BEST SCENE STEALER CHARACTER

Chen Wende, Gone with the Rain - most of this drama is not that exciting but whenever his King of Trolls hot general shows up, I sit up and pay attention. I am 35 eps deep because of him.

NEEDS A SEQUEL

The Ingenuous One - I am dying to see what happens to royal investigator and supposedly dead princess, how our OTP will travel the world, the merchant and his lady, Ten Taels and his orphans and his girl and just everything. I loved these people so!

NEEDS A DIRECTOR’S CUT

Till the End of the Moon - it was clear they cut a BUNCH in the last third to fit the ridiculous new “40 eps or bust” rule and it would flow so much more smoothly if it was allowed to breathe.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

Back from the Brink - it’s based on a novel by an author whose other novels (Zhao Yao, Blue Whispers, Mulberry Song) I adore and the novelist was the screenwriter so I was so excited. But it was a juvenile, flat mess that de-powered the heroine and taught me that yeah, sometimes the writer should not adopt their work.

BIGGEST GOOD SURPRISE

Chang Feng Du - I loved the novel but the trailers were a fluffy bland disaster and I checked it out with zero expectations. However, this is a glorious adaptation, a lesson in how to transport a massive novel on screen into slim 40 eps and to account for changes in medium and stricter censorship restrictions for dramas versus books while keeping the essential vibe of the original.

The Imperial Doctress (China) - the pining the pining by the Hot Emperor! This is like all my web novel dreams come true!

it's genloss ep 3 rewatch time! let's see if I cry this time

1. OH MY GOD I don't remember the last time I watched this episode and THE INTRO?? GOES SO HARD??? the glitches, the drone footage, the MUSIC??? ugh, perfection. literally took my breath away

2. hi gl!Ranboo, we are here, we want to help so badly (I feel so much despair at their ask for help)

3. I forgot how much the soundtrack in this ep adds to the ambience. it just feels so perfect for an abandoned mall where you don't know what to do, how to move forward

4. poor gl!Ranboo was just so scared. I think the only reason he trusts Hetch is because, well, what else can he do in this moment? he doesn't know where he is or presumably how he got there in the first place, so he clings to the first and only person to offer help, and that becomes his downfall

5. oh god, Hetch plants the idea that we, the audience, are not to be trusted. he says "they can't control you anymore." yes, it's true to some extent that we controlled him sometimes, but by saying "control" instead of "help" or some other, more positive connotating word, Hetch is making sure that Ranboo doesn't trust us, also making them trust Hetch more. it's an us vs them mindset. no wonder gl!Ranboo probably thought we killed him out of hate :(

6. oh, one of Ranboo's first thoughts being that he could have helped the others :(

8. "that's security, you won't have to worry about it" yeah Charlie's the one that has to worry about it (I'm sorry)

9. oh Hetch said he reprogrammed the employees to think Ranboo is part of the show, but he really didn't because he Is still part of the show

14. I saw someone say that in the heart of the facility the place where Ranboo enters the code looks like lungs, and that made me realize all the tubes and wires around that are like intestines and arteries respectively. even the colors make sense for that

15. remember how I said Hetch planted the idea that the audience is not to be trusted? yeah, that's why it didn't matter what code we picked. gl!Ranboo was too scared of us
