Okay but have we thought about how scary odysseus interacting with the gods /his knowledge about such things it must have been for his crew?
Its well known that odysseus is Athenas favorite, even before the Trojan war. But what does that look like from the outside? Are their conversations in some other plain? Does odysseus sometimes just glaze over and you just have to trust its a god speaking to him and not aome other fit? Out in the open? During the war odysseus was frequently doing really bizarre things on Athena's say so. Bit you also know your captain is a freak and lier so which is it this time? The gods will or odysseus just tucking with you? There's a little wariness there. But it's well known. And been like this forever.
But then you start encountering more monsters. More gods. They all talk to your captain. Your captain stops sleeping. Your go between for you and the captain starts committing crimes against the captain, starts bad mouthing him. More of your friends have died then in ten years of war. And every other day there's a new god talking to your captain. What mortal man has the interest of this many gods? What mortal man can get up in the gods faces to yell at them. What mortal man has the powers to overcome the witches they encounter the power to over turn gods spells? What mortal man's tongue is so gilded he convinces these powers to help them? And doubt comes creeping in.

(check the tags for more and also the tag for other fics in the story!)
athena, scowling as she gets bullied into marrying the people she pined over for the last 1000 years, suddenly realising something: wait a minute
odysseus: what?
athena, frozen: wait a damn minute you know what this gives me rights to do
penelope, also realising: oh fuck yes
odysseus: I don't like the sound of whatever's happening here what are you two fucking talking about?
athena, grabbing the marriage wine and tossing it back, then kissing her new wife and husband and handing penelope a spear as she picks up a mace: we'll be back shortly, you can start celebrations without us.
penelope: do u have anything that can start a fire
athena, pulling out an old contract and scanning it before throwing it over her shoulder: yes. are you scared of heights or can we fly.
penelope: fucking bring it I've waited years for this moment
zeus: where are they going
hermes, picking up the contract: they're going to... Ogygia? Oh fucking shit they're going to fucking kill Calypso- hey, hello, WAIT-
#odysseus disappears midway because athena plants one on him so hard his soul evaporates#(strategic to make him stop from coming after them and also from passion she forgot to hold back for once)#(and also shes maybe possibly in love and cant wait to get vengeance on Calypsos bitch ass who hurt him so much for so long)#penelope has had to deal with calypos afteraffects for literally the rest of their lives. from flashbacks to odysseus inconsolably crying#at her feet for forgiveness some days even though shes always said frim the first moment that it wasnt his fault#the rest of the gods have to chase them down to prevent them from eternally torturing calypso (goddesses cant die <3)#athenas blazing mad and sick with guilt and horror. she couldn't attack before because it would be seen as an attack from olympus#but as a wife! as two wifes! no political implications there no holds barred calypso gets her ass BEAT#but also pls imagine them chasing her and gods chasing them round and round the island while screaming#odysseus wavered like 17 times on whether to ask hermes for a lift there or not but goes in the end#their honeymoon in truth ends up being on ogygia#athena lovingly and seductively teaching penelope how to fillet a person both of them covered in ichor#odysseus with a hand over his mouth blushing grinning tears in eyes torn between turned on and terrified to be back and crying coz they lov#him that much.#((he goes to her just before they leave in the cave she used to drag him to. she can barely hold herself up and hes shaking to approach))#((but he's stronger now. settled and satisfied and content. he kneels by her and sets down bandages next to her.))#((i told you i was married he says. and because his truest weapon is his tongue- if youd just listened i wouldve found us both a way out))#she sobs and he leaves. the scars will never fade fully but he feels lighter as he steps out into the sun where athene and pen are waiting.#bloodsoaked and being shouted at by hera but smiling at him widely and gleefully as he approaches. takes a hand each and presses him btwn.#he squeezes back with a smile and leans into them. his beautiful horrifying wives#odypenath#odypenetha#odysseus#penelope#athena#odypen#odyath#penath#epic the musical#love in paradise

Finished my devotional piece to Athena, and of course, it had to be the most challenging one so far. I had to redo the outline three times, and completely scrap it twice.

Favorite/Lesser known/Lesser focused on Athene (Athena) epithets.
Athene Aithyia - Seabird (the grey puffin or shearwater, also known as the sea-crow).
Athene Alalkomenêis: - Defender/Parrier
Athene Amaria - Bright Sky
Athene Anemôtis - Of the Winds/Subduer of Winds
Athene Atrutônê - Tireless
Athene Boulaia - Reasoner
Athene Ergatis - Craftsman
Athene Glaukopis - Owl-eyed, clear-eyed, bright-eyed, large-eyed with a sparkling look, or with the flashing eyes. Her eyes are bright like an owl's in the night (at the very least) or have an uncanny look to an owl's eyes, giving her this title.
Athene Hephaestia - Of Hephaistos. The master of crafts like sculpting, woodwork, and metal work also shared by Hephaistos
Athene Homolôis - The Constant/Concord
Athene Kalliergos - Fine-worker
Athene Keleutheia - Of the Roads
Athene Narkaia - The Petrifying One/One with the Petrifying Gaze
Athene Nauta - Shipbuilder. Aside from the myth of creating the first ship, it is also used for navigation and protection by the goddess while sailing
Athene Pandrosos - All-Doer
Athene Phemia - Of Verbal Omens
Athene Proxima - Goddess of nearness (as Walter F. Otto translates it, the one who is always near her followers, in contrast with the distance of Apollo). She is always standing by her followers and worshippers.
Athene Phronesis - Creator of Morally Responsible Reasoning
Athene Polymetis - Wise in Many Ways
Athene Ophthalmitidos - Of the Eyes. As someone that is legally blind and with still worsening vision, it's important to me as she is a goddess that gives understanding and other gifts (other ways of seeing) in regards to it.
Athene Salpingks - Trumpeter/Of the War Trumpet
Athene Tritogeneia - Water-Born/Born From The Water. Indicating her many associations with water as a whole whether that be fresh water or salt water, and goes in the direction of her father being Poseidon over Zeus
Sources: one, two, three, four, five, six

Fountain of Pallas Athena (The Athenebrunnen) in Stuttgart, Germany
The Fountain of Pallas Athena, or Athenebrunnen, in Stuttgart, Germany, features a striking statue of Pallas Athena standing majestically atop the head of Zeus, vividly depicting the mythological story of her birth. According to ancient Greek mythology, Athena was born fully grown and armored from the forehead of her father, Zeus, symbolizing her emergence as the goddess of wisdom and warfare. This artistic representation not only celebrates Athena's divine attributes but also highlights the rich cultural and mythological heritage that continues to influence and inspire European art and public monuments.

Wait going off the idea that Athena keeps things from her favorite people:
What does diomedes give her?
#epic the musical#The odyssey#Greek myths#Athena#Diomedes#On one hand I would love to see diomedes gifts up on the same shelf of odysseus's carvings#But on the other hand diomedes and Athena have a much more traditional mentor relationship#Verse her absolutely batshit insane relationship she has with odysseus and the love she has for the rest of the family#And diomedes prays /interacts with Athena in a much more traditional way too#So I imagine he gives her proper sacrifices instead of yeeting random wood carvings at her#Maybe this is something that happens later in life for diomedes after he's retired and founded a couple cities#He finally has time to 1. Discover what he actually likes to do and 2. For his relationship with Athena to soften into actual friendship#Diomedes (now forty): carefully placing his first actual gift (instead of sacrifice) on Athens alter#Diomedes: goddess Athena i hope this indulgence is okay. I made this for you as a gift for all the time you have spent helping me#Diomedes: now that my fighting is done i hope you will grace me with you presence from time to time. Thank you goddess for everything.#Athena: who didn't realize she was upset that her and Dios relationship never developed into friendship until this second#Athena: clutching the gift to her chest and using quick thought to scream internally#Athena: voice cracking : It's FINE#(Later Athena dragging odysseus from his bed at 3 am screaming at full volume diomedes finally gave me a gift#He's never given you a gift proof that he likes me better than you get fucked#And then disappears before odysseus can retort because she has to spend hours finding the perfect place for her gift)

Prayer to Athena
My goddess who protects,
Pallas Athena who's strength
Is beyond that of me,
Great daughter of Zeus,
Thy shield I ask to cover me,
Your spear to ward away
Evil. I have nothing to offer
But myself.
I beg for your favor,
Grey-eyed beauty,
May the gold in your
Veins be ever flowing.
Enemies cower at the sound
Of your name. Conqueror of the
Unjust, thy power is awe inducing.

Excerpts from a random Greek myth retelling I've had in mind for a few months. There's only the thinnest vial of a plot so far, but I wrote a couple scenarios I thought would be funny or interesting (half of them will probably have to go) but it is so unhinged I couldn't not share
Note: these are all from Ares's POV
“ ‘As the protector of young boys, I hereby declare Hermes a young boy, which makes it my duty to protect him!’, Apollo yelled. ‘Hey!’, Hermes protested, but Apollo was already slinging him over his shoulder and heading for the exits. Good riddance. Ares was getting tired of having the spikes on his sword stolen.”
"Athens should have picked Poseidon. Except they were currently in the process of fighting Poseidon, in the ocean, so forget he said anything, actually."
“You know what? Forget the war. He would move to the south pole and become the god of penguins.”
“But if he knew his mother at all, which he did, he knew she was definitely not above doing something so despicable. She’d thrown Hephaestus off mount Olympus when he was born because he was lame and ugly, and yes, his brother was in fact terribly ugly, and Ares had definitely contemplated throwing him off a cliff before, the guy was mega annoying at the best of times, but still. Not Cool, mom.”
“Well, Hera, he was tempted to say, if you didn’t keep ruining their mothers’ lives, maybe they’d be nicer to you. Not being suicidal, he held his tongue.”
“He was tempted to throw the horseshoe in his face, but he doubted the gesture would be appreciated.”
“Hestia was everyone’s favourite aunt. Unfortunately, he would have to drop Poseidon in her hearth, which was an unforgivable insult to her pride above all else. He felt no remorse for throwing Poseidon in a giant fire place, though. The guy’d been getting on his nerves all week.”
“Thanatos was a workaholic. Why couldn’t the guy take a vacation for like, a month or two? He said this out of concern for the guy, of course, but he wouldn’t argue it would be nice if his soldiers didn’t keep dying.”
“Athena threw her shield in his face and bolted for the door. How was she the smart one again? The shield broke in half on Zeus’s forehead, and he roared in anger. Ares darted after her.”
“Persephone threw the bouquet in Hermes’s face. Hermes screamed, which, valid. Persephone throwing anything was scary.”
