23. What’s a story you’d love to write but haven’t even started yet?
Hello, Nonnie! Thank you for the ask!
So one story I'm definitely looking forward to writing but haven't started yet, except for a few scrawled notes, is Loved and Lost, which was inspired by, among other things, this image:
Tumblr media
It's set in December 1950 and covers the repatriation of Curt and Dickie's bodies back to America and their reburial. I think--I really hope--Millie will finally get a little bit of closure about Regensburg. At the very least, she and Godbey are finally going to meet again, and she'll get some more answers.
For this Ask Game, which is still open.

Character Profile: Zena Moralis
Art by Cory Godbey (2015)
Tumblr media
Name, age, gender: Zenaida “Zena” Philomena Moralis, 22, female
Physical appearance; how the character feels about their physical appearance: dark brown eyes and long curly hair, sickly olive skin – freckled, Grecian nose and handsome features, short but confident stature, leanly muscled, naturally dark under-eyes, acne scars, resting sad face, wears hoop earrings religiously despite the risk, always cuts her nails short but paints them black; likes her appearance though believes it is not something that would attract other people or is considered conventionally attractive. Clothing: Loose shirts and high-waisted trousers made for freedom of movement, with belts to match her jewellery, and combat boots, along with cloaks or a hoodie/coat, depending on where she just came from. This is her default. Sometimes she’ll wear loose trousers and armoured tops with armbands and bracers. For more formal occasions, she wears elegant, eye-catching gowns that would make magpies envious.
Race, class, ethnicity: human, middle class, Greek/Mundus Rimorian.
Childhood experience – family relationships, friends and key figures, lifestyle, education, activities and interests
Family relationships: Zena lives with her absentee father, Eamon Moralis, and her sister, Phoebe. She knows no other family, save for Evangeline Clemenza, the woman who is allegedly hers and Phoebe's runaway mother.
Friends: Kamali Wynn is Zena’s best friend from childhood, and she also meets Florence Escoffier almost a month before the novel's beginning and the two are fast friends.
Key figures: Cain Wynn and Lulit Wynn, parents of Kamali and their youngest daughter, Makeda. Cain and Lulit frequently babysat Zena and were there for her in ways that Eamon was not.
Lifestyle: limited by arthritis and a strict father, at least until he started disappearing for long periods of time. She stays active to keep her body going and blow off frustrated steam.
Education: received a full education with a high school diploma, is currently enrolled in her final year of law at university.
Activities/hobbies: reading, writing (fan fiction), sketching, tennis.
Interests: novels, gardening, 1 v 1 or 2 v 2 sports (including chess), arts, and video games.
Attitudes and moral beliefs: Zena believes in justice, which she measures by her own moral code that she has constructed growing up. She dislikes authority, but not to the level of being an anarchist. Murder is not okay. Mostly though, she believes in having the freedom to live how you want.
Current relationships – parents, siblings, romantic partners, friends, children, etc.: Eamon is the only semi-present parent who Zena is on rocky terms with since she hates him but is reluctantly attached to him despite this, she's very close with her sister Phoebe and her best friend Kamali, and she has no romantic partner currently but has a bad habit of falling in love with everyone.
Religious background and current religious beliefs: Zena does not believe in a higher power.
Occupation; relationship to boss and coworkers: full-time university student; does not mind most of her professors, and is divided in her feelings about her classmates.
Main aspects of personality – introvert/extrovert, pessimist/optimist, thinking/feeling, etc.: Zena is at heart an introvert, an absurdist and cynic, who wars between her thoughts and feelings but is ultimately ruled by the former. She falls in love too easily despite how often she’ll claim she’s “not afraid to be alone”, because she craves deeper connection and to feel secure. Zena also has a bad habit of self-sacrificing that comes from disregarding her own life.
What are they proud of? Ashamed of?: Zena is proud of her own stubbornness and determination, as well as her humour, but she is ashamed of her insecurities (feeling lonely, unstable, not strong enough, not quite smart enough, not pretty enough – not enough for anyone, a failure, someone to be left behind).
State of health: she is generally healthy, aside from the arthritis, but she tends to catch colds often. She is strong but not very much so.
Fears: abandonment (particularly when Eamon “gave up” on her), needles/injections, drowning, claustrophobia, losing herself, failing.
Sense of humour: sarcastic, dry, silly, and occasionally dark.
Core characteristic: represented by the sun in her intensity, warmth, passion, and yet removed nature (the moon is closer to the earth than the sun), her fiery anger and occasional harshness. Her core characteristic is a sense of justice; it's what drives and guides her.
Inherent contradiction: craving connection with people but holding them at arm’s length because she’s afraid of abandonment, of failing them.
Favourites: orange (flavour/food/colour), bears, summer, Earl Grey tea, hot showers, martial arts (sport), thunderstorms, sunrise.
Dislikes: green tea, liars, swimming, sharks, injustice, losing.

“For as a man, going away, called his servants, and delivered unto them his goods, To one he gave five talents, and another two, and to another one: to each one according to his own ability, and departed.”  - “Ability” here is dunamis, “dynamite.” Now, the Savior not only gives us our calling and work, enterprise and opportunity, to some more and to others less, but as the Divine dynamite is the only thing that can burst up the devil’s rock, tunnel through his mountains, and execute the work Jesus gives us to do, you see He gives the dynamite too. Consequently we are all left without excuse, as we do not have to prosecute these tremendous achievements by our own resources. If your calling is great, He gives you dynamite in proportion. If you have to tear Pike’s Peak out of the Rockies, He supplies all the dynamite necessary to do it. You have nothing to do but ignite it with heavenly fire, which He also supplies without stint.
William Godbey; Commentary on Matthew 25:14-30

NCIS: Los Angeles Season Eight Rewatch:    "Home is Where the Heart Is"
The basics: A handyman saves the life of a lieutenant commander whose past puts a teenage girl in danger.  Kensi learns about her recovery timeline.
Written by:  Joseph C. Wilson who wrote or co-wrote “Full Throttle”, “Stand-off”, “Personal”, “Plan B”, “Sacrifice”, “Blye, K.” Part One, “Gold Standard”, “Unwritten Rule”, “Fallout”, “Between the Lines”, “Exposure”, “Reign Fall”, “Kolcheck, A.”, “Cancel Christmas” and “Head of The Snake”
Directed by:  Eric Pot directed “Resurrection”, “Windfall”, “Traitor” and “Internal Affairs”.  Pot is the First Assistant Director for all the odd numbered episodes according to the Eric Christian Olsen/Daniela Ruah “Traitor” commentary for the season six DVDs.
Guest stars of note:  Bar Paly is back from "Ghost Gun" as Anna Kolcheck, TJ Ramini as John Martin/Tobin Shakked, Marc Antony Samuel as Navy Lieutenant Commander George Owens, Solomon Shiv as Ariel, Rob Bronstein as Kensi's Neurologist, Emily Tosta as Carla Stone, Sean Patrick Murphy as LAPD Officer, Matthew Grant Godbey was back from "Reznikov, N."in season five as LAPD Detective Dan Evans, Jeff Bee as the Delivery Guy and Markie Adams as Ann Chrysweld.
Our heroes:  Team up with a good Samaritan who is more than just a handyman while Kensi learns she's in for a long rehab.
What important things did we learn about:
Callen:  Has his best 'orphan' moment to date. Sam:  Wants to protect one of the good guys. Kensi: Unhappy with her long physical therapy schedule. Deeks: Trying his best but not always succeeding. Eric:  Horrified Nell was blown up. Nell: Blown up. Granger:  Been called worse. Hetty:  Mole hunting.
What not so important things did we learn about:
Callen:  Bought Rams jerseys with his and Sam’s aliases. Sam:  Owner of two Rams tickets on the 50-yard line. Kensi:  Wants to go home. Deeks:  Friends with Granger. Eric:  Training for the X-Box games. Nell:  Moved passed terrorizing Deeks behind the wheel and now scaring Anna in Anna’s car. Granger:  Friends with Deeks. Hetty:  Not much today.
Who's down with OTP:   Deeks is trying his best – trying his best to do make Kensi happy and to be supportive while still working with the team.  He does the right thing at the wrong time during her recovery.  Thinking a fun meal outside will help when Kensi is just not in the mood for any of that.  Eric is horrified to see Nell injured on the job.  Nell calls Eric, “my liege.”
Who's down with BrOTP:  Callen and Sam are bickering over Sam's football tickets.  Granger is wonderfully supportive to Deeks.  Nell and Anna bond over fast cars and explosives.
Any Hanna family mentions:  No.
Fashion review:   Callen is in his blue-green checked button down shirt.  The dark blue henley for Sam.  Kensi is still wearing the hospital clothes.  Black v-neck tee for Deeks.  Eric is in his pale green and white striped button down over a rust color tee.  Nell is in black v-neck sweater and jeans with a red jacket that is so much better than that blue horror show.  No Hetty but Granger is in his medium blue suit with a pale blue dress shirt.
Music:  "Rich" by Gladius is playing in the teaser.
Any notable cut scene:
Quote:   Granger:  "So, how's it going?” Deeks:  "Kensi's got a long journey ahead of her, but she'll get there." Granger:  "Mm.  But how's Deeks doing? Listen, you got to roll with this a little bit here.  Help me out.” Deeks:  "Um honestly, I don't know.  At this point, I-I can't tell if I'm if I'm comforting her or just myself." Granger:  "Well, if it comforts both, does it matter?” Deeks:  "No.  No, I guess it doesn't, does it? You know what's crazy about this is that you know, we say these things like we'll go to the ends of the Earth for somebody, but then you're called on it and you realize you don't know how.  And I don't I don't know how." Granger:  "You're at a place in your life right now where you have to realize you're not just responsible for yourself.  You're responsible for all the lives you touch.” Deeks:  "Yeah, no, I realize that and I'm and I'm trying.  And Kensi, God bless her, she puts on a good face.  I just don't know if I'm doing a great job." Granger:  "The only way you'll fail her is if you quit.  So, don't quit.  You got this." Deeks:  "Thank you, Assistant Director." Granger:  "All my friends call me Granger.” Deeks:  "That mean we're gonna be friends?" Granger:  "We'll call you when we need you.”
"Internal Affairs" was packed – there wasn't a wasted scene so I understand why Granger's conversation with Kensi about Deeks was cut – it didn’t add to the episode.  But Granger in that episode had little personal use for Deeks.  He obviously thought Deeks was qualified since he was with the team but he wasn't so sure of Deeks as a person.  That changed here and it was lovely to see.
Anything else:  A couple are sharing a nice moment alone when they hear something outside the apartment.  They pick up where they left off but broken glass had the man get the woman off the couch and behind a wall in his living room.  When someone breaks into the apartment's bedroom, the man takes the woman and his phone into a spare room with gym equipment.  He opens the closet door and hands her the phone, telling her to call 911.
Picking up a wrench, the man waits for the intruder.  The two struggle but the intruder knocks the man to the ground.  Picking up the wrench, the intruder is about to strike the man on the ground when a third man enters the room and beats the living hell out of the intruder.  The intruder pulls a gun and fires wildly at the third man.  The third man pushes a treadmill into the intruder before grabbing a knife and throwing it at and hitting the intruder.  The third man sees the woman in the closet, who is filming the fight.  The police enter the room.
Sam walks into the bullpen after blowing off Callen.  They were supposed to work out that morning.  Sam had to pick something up – Rams tickets, football in LA for the first time in 22-years.  And on the 50-yard line.  Callen doesn't care – he's doing paperwork.  Callen would rather watch the game on his couch having a cold frosty beer.  Sam reminds him you can get beer at the stadium.  Callen just isn't into crowds.
Eric joins the fun – he'd be happy to "roll" with Sam to the game.  Sam may just take him up on that if Eric is a fan.  Eric isn't a fan, he's a fanatic – pom-poms, body paint.  Callen is snickering, Sam is slightly horrified.  Eric even has an extra foam finger.
Up in Ops, Nell has the uniformed photo of the man in the teaser.  He is Naval Engineer Lt. Commander George Owens.  Owens designs propulsion systems for nukes.  The woman is Ann Chrysweld.  The intruder was – he's dead - a Robert Collier with a long record.  They wonder why a common criminal would be targeting nuclear technology.  Callen asked about the killing and Eric tells him the handyman, a John Martin, intervened.  They have video shot by Chrysweld from the closet.  Martin left when the police were questioning him.  He also ducked news cameras.  Callen and Sam wonder why a hero would miss his moment in the sun.  Nell tells them Lt. Commander Owens is the boat shed waiting for them.  Deeks is at the hospital – he stayed over but is available if needed.
Deeks slowly wakes up on Kensi's hospital room couch.  She's watching him.  When he's up, she wants a kiss which he happily supplies.  Deeks is very encouraging – she looks great and she's doing great.  He asks her what she needs and the thing she wants – a limo to go home – is the one item he can't provide.  "I don't want to be here anymore."  Deeks tells her this is where she has to be to recover and he'll be around as much as he can.  Kensi tells him he doesn't have to but he tells he wants to.  Besides, he tells her, she's going to be out of the hospital in a second…."though the house is so clean right now."  Kensi laughs.
Callen and Sam tell Lt. Commander Owens it looks like a standard home invasion.  Owens is relieved it had nothing to do with his work.  They discuss the handyman, who the Owens thinks should be boxing in the UFC.  Owens doesn’t know much about the man – Martin helped Owens move in eight years ago since they were both moving in.  Callen is a bit suspicious that they moved in at the same time.  Maybe Martin was there to watch Owens.  "Intricate but not impossible,”  Sam says.  Callen thinks they may be jaded – maybe Martin is just a good Samaritan.  They are going to talk to Martin.
Up in Ops, Deeks walks in to see Nell beating Eric's palms with one of Hetty's wooden weapons.  Yes, Deeks looks stunned – the program did a nice job of making Deeks the one who walks in on Eric and Nell this season the way Eric and Mostly Nell use to do to Kensi and Deeks.  Nell explains that the X-Box games are coming up and Eric is working on his hand strength.  That does little for Deeks.  Nell asks "how's our girl?"   Deeks says Kensi is taking it one step at a time.  Since she's in therapy, Deeks thought he'd drop by.  He asks for "the Hardy Boys" – a great nickname for Callen and Sam.  Nell updates Deeks on the case while Eric tells him Hetty is out mole hunting.  Deeks backs away from Eric and Nell, telling them to just keep doing their S&M and dominatrix thing. Eric and Nell are surprised by this.  Deeks is surprised that the door to Ops won't open.  "You have to be facing forward for that to work,” Nell tells him.  Deeks did not know that.
John Martin's apartment is rather sparsely furnished.  Callen likes the minimalism, Sam knew he would because Callen in cheap.  On his desk, Callen sees a number of newspapers with articles cut out.  There is a teenage girl in one of the photos.  Sam notices the heating vent isn't quite flush wtih the wall.  Pulling it out, there is a serious weapons drawer.  Sam wonders if they're looking for Jason Bourne but Callen is more worried he's Jeffrey Dahmer.  Either way, they want to find her.
Deeks runs into Anna between the gun range and the gym.  He asks if Anna is going to be a regular with them.  She is as she waits for her ATF approval or until Hetty runs out of work for her.  The girl in the photo is Carla Stone, Anna is going to check out her residence.  Deeks volunteers to go with Anna but she thinks he should talk to Granger first.  Deeks makes a "Granger Grumpy Pants" and "Herr Geezmieseter" crack so you know Granger is right there.  "Assistant Director" will do, Granger tells Deeks.  When Deeks tries to apologize, Granger says he's been called far worse by far better.  Nell is going with Anna, Granger needs to speak to Deeks.  Deeks tells Granger he can do his job and look after Kensi.  "That's awesome but I still need to talk to you," Granger says to Deeks.  Nell ask Anna if she can drive Anna's new Mustang.  Deeks tries to stop Anna but Anna shares.  "The streets of LA just got a little more dangerous,” Deeks warns.
Granger empties out the gym and sits on a bench with Deeks.  Deeks is not comfortable with any of this.  Granger wants to know how it is going.  Deeks says Kensi has a long road ahead of her but she's getting there.  "How's Deeks doing?” Granger asks.  Deeks is surprised.  Granger wants Deeks to help him out – roll with it.  Deeks doesn’t know if he's comforting Kensi or himself.  If it works, Granger wonders if it matters.  Deeks says people promise to go to the end of the world for the person they love but "I don't know how."  Granger tells Deeks he's responsible for the lives of all the people he touches.  Deeks is trying, he really is and Kensi puts on a good face but he doesn't think he's doing a good job.  Granger says they only way Deeks will fail Kensi is if he quits trying.  "Thank you, Assistant Director,” Deeks says sincerely.  "My friends call me Granger," the Assistant Director says.  Deeks asks if they're friends.  Granger says he'll call when they need him.
Kensi is being examined at the hospital by a doctor with a number of young residents watching.  She is having strength issues on her left side and nerve issues – the ability to feel pain or heat – on the right.  Kensi is horrified.  "Both sides are damaged."  The doctor thinks there is bruising and not necessarily damage to the spine.  She's made progress in the last few days – this is good.  In four to six months with daily physical therapy, the doctors will know exactly how much usage will return to her left side.  Kensi seems to take this news well when the doctors are in the room but once they leave, she's visibly frustrated.
Nell speeds down the street to Carla Stone's apartment building.  Nell loves Anna's car – "I think I'm built for this," she says.  Not happy – Anna, who will be driving them back to the office.   Nell notices Carla is home from school during the middle of the day.  Anna gets out of the car and introduces herself to Carla as Lana, one of Carla's mom's friends.  Carla wasn't feeling well so her mother said she could go home.  Mom is returning from Sacramento.
After Carla goes into the apartment building, Anna calls Callen, who has just arrived at Carla's school with Sam.  Sam sees John Martin at the school.  Martin sees Callen and Sam making their way to him.  He turns to leave but a men near the school attacks Martin with a syringe.  This surprises Callen and Sam who start yelling federal agent.   Callen has Martin cuffed and Sam goes after the attacker.  The attacker nearly runs over a kid – Sam saves the boy – as he drives away.
In the boatshed, Callen and Sam question Martin about the attacker.  Martin says he knows nothing – he thought they would know.  Sam thinks it is suspicious this all happens on the same day Martin kills a man.  Martin said he didn't mean to kill a man.  The knife belonged to the Commander.  He just got lucky.  When Callen brings up Martin's gun collection, he uses the word "flat" to describe his apartment.  This earns a look from Callen and Sam.  Martin's accent is perfectly American, "flat" is not.
Sam asks why did he hide the guns.  Gun safety, according to Martin.  There are a lot of kids in the apartment complex and he needs to be responsible.  Callen shows Martin the article about Carla Stone.  Martin flips it over to a mattress sale on the back.  Since you spend so much of your life sleeping, it is important to get a good mattress.  They bring up the coincidence of Martin being attacked outside of Carla Stone's school.  And that Martin showed up just as Carla went home sick.  Martin finds all these coincidences strange.  Martin wants to know how long they are going to hold him.  "Get comfortable" is Sam's reply.
Deeks walks into Kensi's room as she's massaging her leg.  Deeks tries to joke but Kensi is not in the mood.  Deeks thinks they should get out of Kensi's room but Kensi asks how is she going to do that if she can't walk.  Deeks thinks if you can't walk, ride in style.
Callen and Sam watch Martin from the boat shed's main room.  They are still bickering over the Rams game.  Callen thinks the verbal miscues are a clue.  Sam wonders if he's European.  They go back to speak to Martin.  Martin wants to be released.  Callen says they have all day, Martin may not.  Martin says the girl in the photo is in danger.  When Callen asks how Martin knows that, the American accent disappears.  "My name is Tobin Shakked and I'm ex-Mossad."
Shakked explains he was Kiddon – "Mossad within Mossad" according to Sam, who asks if Shakked is in the US to kill Carla Stone.  Shakked tells Sam if he wants Carla Stone dead, she'd be dead.  Instead, another former member of Mossad, a David Fisch, went rouge eight years ago, killing thirteen innocent civilians.  After Shakked turned Fisch in, Fisch escaped and wants revenge against Shakked and his family.  Callen and Sam realize Carla is her daughter.  Shakked tells them Carla's mother couldn't live with the lies and the hiding.  Carla and her mother have been living in Los Angeles since Carla was a little girl.
Shakked has no regrets helping the Lt. Commander but now his daughter is in danger.  Fisch is now a big-time mobster in Israel and wants to Shakked back there.  The best way to do that is through his daughter.  Callen asks him why he's so sure Fisch will use Carla.  Shakked admits that is what he would do.
Eric confirms Shakked's story.  Sam notes Shakked did the right thing – he's hard wired to help people.  Callen thinks they have to help Shakked, even if it isn’t their fight.  "Us good guys have to stick together,” Sam says to Callen.  They are going to bring in Clara and her mother.
Nell and Anna get to Carla Stone's apartment but the door is opened.  Anna calls to Carla and it sounds like Carla is struggling inside the apartment.  When Anna opens the door, she trips a wire and the door to the apartment explodes.  Nell and Anna are tossed across the hallway.  Anna struggles to get to an unconscious Nell.  An unwilling Carla and a man leave the apartment.  The man drops a phone in front of Anna before he takes Carla away.
Anna is blowing off the EMT who is checking her out.  Nell has an ice pack on her head.  "It gets real in the field," Nell tells an arriving Sam but she's glad to be alive.  She doesn’t remember getting to the apartment.  Anna is a little less confused but she didn't see the man who took Carla – too much smoke.  Anna gives Sam the burn phone.  Anna doesn’t want to stay with the EMTs but Callen insists.
In Ops, Eric is reviewing the blast over and over again.  Callen and Sam call in from the boat shed.  Eric asks about Nell and how they can catch the bad guy.  Callen tells Eric that Nell is fine, she'll be back in Ops soon.  The EMTs are making sure she's not hurt.  Eric has a good picture of the man who took Carly.  Shakked recognizes the man as someone named Ariel – Fisch's "ruthless dog" who finds people who don’t to be found.
Deeks takes Kensi in a wheelchair to the tables outside the hospital.  Kensi says she's been breathing hospital air for so long even the LA air smells good.  But as they settle in, Kensi is looking at her fellow patients with walkers or aides helping them move.  Suddenly, Kensi wants to return to her room.  Just as she asks Deeks, a delivery man stops by their table.  Deeks figured Kensi was sick of hospital food so he orders her some bulgogi – which is a nice callback to when Deeks was struggling and he and Kensi went out for dinner for the same meal.
Kensi is shaking her head and having none of it.  She's not hungry.  "What's going to happen to me?” Kensi asks.  Deeks tells her she's going to take it day by day until she can return to work.  Kensi asks what happens if she doesn’t get better.  While Deeks tells her she's getting better every day, Kensi doesn't feel like she is.  She can't walk, she may never walk.  Deeks is sure she will but Kensi tells him he doesn't know that.  She wants to go back to her room.  Deeks starts to take her back but a frustrated Kensi doesn’t want his help.  Kensi asks a nurse passing by to bring her back to her room and to turn away all visitors.  Deeks is crushed.
Callen and Sam have out the big guns and kevlar when the call comes in from Fisch's men.  A straight trade – Carla for Shakked at a chemical plant in NoHo.  They are going to set up a perimeter and once Carla is safe, they'll go after Fisch and his men.  Deeks and Anna arrive.  Callen asks about Kensi – "Rough day.  Let's say my charm has its limitations."  Sam gives Deeks a comforting arm on the shoulder.  Anna is looking for some payback.  They're off to NoHo.
At the chemical plant, Anna is in overwatch.  Callen has Shakked.  Deeks is joking about making out with a girl named Hazel in a place like the yard where they're standing.  Anna doesn’t believe Deeks – no way that happened.  Deeks thinks she's still loopy from the blast – he was quite the player when he was a teen.  Sam joins Callen with Shakked.
Using security cameras, Eric sees Ariel walk in.  Ariel joins Callen, Sam and Shakked.  Carla is in one of the chemical containers with two minutes of air.  Sam thinks Ariel is bluffing but Shakked wants to save his daughter so he leaves as the team starts frantically searching for Carla.  There a "about a million barrels" according to Deeks.  Eric is tracking Ariel and Shakked as the team looks for anything out of the ordinary.
Just as Eric loses the security camera feed of Shakked and Ariel, Sam notices some track marks in the ground.  He sees a barrel away from the others.  Carla is inside.  She has a pulse but is not breathing.  Sam performs mouth to mouth and saves the girl.  "Well done,” Callen tells Sam.
The EMTs are taking Carla to the hospital.  Anna is staying with the girl until her mother can get there.  While Deeks is dealing with LAPD, Callen and Sam start going through the scenarios of how Ariel would get Shakked to Israel.  The two remember, however, that Ariel said he was taking Shakked to Fisch, not to Israel.  Maybe Fisch is in the US.  They can kill Shakked here.
Nell returns to Ops.  Eric doesn't understand why she's there but Nell says she's just shaken, not stirred.  She asks what are they doing and Eric said worrying about her.  She wants to know about the case.   Nell gives Eric a peck on the cheek and tells him he's sweet.  He hugs her, glad she is OK.  Eric is running the usual searches – credit cards, plane tickets but he could always use a second set of eyes.  "You have but to ask my liege," Nell replies.  They find Fisch entering the US in a private flight.  It is a lovely scene.
Callen, Sam and Deeks come up on a warehouse inside the chemical plant.  Deeks is in overwatch, talking Callen and Sam in.  Ariel is beating the hell out of Shakked.  Fisch arrives with three goons – Deeks thinks Callen and Sam going in to rescue Shakked means they're "walking into a buzz saw."  Ariel tells Shakked that Carla was put in the barrel 20-minutes earlier than he told the others.  Carla died scared and alone, just as Shakked will.  Ariel pulls out a knife.  Deeks sees this and yells to Callen and Sam they have go in.  Sam hopes they live long enough to see the Rams game.
Lots of shooting happens.  Callen and Sam take out most of the bad guys in the warehouse.  Deeks sees Fisch running out of the building with one of his men.  Deeks follows them.  Callen corners Ariel and Sam takes him down by breaking through a cheap wall.
Deeks shoots at Fisch's vehicle and causes one of the best explosions since "San Voir", Deeks tells Sam he thinks he has Fisch.  When the vehicle suffers a second explosion, Deeks is sure he has Fisch.  Callen frees Shakked.
At the hospital, Shakked is watching his daughter through her hospital room door.  Callen arrives.  Telling Callen he owes him a life's debt, Shakked is going to wait for Carla's mother to arrive and then disappear.  Callen calls in his marker – he wants Shakked to speak to his daughter, to be her father.  Shakked thinks the girl is better off without him in her life.  Callen that decision is Carla's to make and while things may be painful in the beginning, "that's the fire you have to walk through to get your daughter back."  Shakked visits with his daughter.  Of all the Callen as orphan scenes the program has done, this is the best.  By a lot.
Back in the bullpen, Deeks is about to go to the hospital but he's hanging around to watch the carnage as Eric and Anna try to be Sam's football buddy.  Eric use to sell beer at the Coliseum, he can get them a discount.  Anna can get Sam in to the locker room to meet the players.  "I know people,” she explains.  Callen arrives and claim to the tickets.  Nell arrives with a FedEx box.  There are new jerseys for Mr. Carl and Switch – aliases, Eric tells Anna.  Eric still tries to get the tickets saying he has a tee-shirt gun.  Anna can get Sam a sweaty jersey worn in the game.  Sam is happy not to be going to the game with either Eric and Anna.
What head canon can be formed from here:  Eric coming to grips with the danger Nell faces in the field.  The Deeks/Granger friendship.
Episode number:  This is episode six of season eight and 174 overall.

Discolored Review – A Beautiful and Frustrating Foray
Discolored Review
Discolored, an upcoming indie game by developer Jason Godbey is a first-person puzzle adventure game set in a world with no color. The narrator slides a vintage viewer over their eyes and is transported to a monochromatic diner in the middle of the desert, with more secrets than tumbleweeds (note: there are not many, if any, tumbleweeds). Anyone who has played the myriad of…

Interview: Jason Godbey on The Search
#indiedev Interview: Jason Godbey on @TheSearch_Game #indiegame #gamedev
Games that make a distinct decision to be philosophical, purposefully symbolic, and delve into topics not normally addressed by games at large always grab my attention. The Search does all three.
A point-and-click exploration and puzzle game that peppers the dialogue with Jung and Freud, makes it’s own puzzles into symbols, and talks about the very nature of artistic creation, I thoroughly enjoyed

Dialing up the past: How did the early internet affect the media?

Amit Rathore is the founder and CEO of Quintype, a modern media technology platform and premium monetization service.
If you’re old enough, think back to the early days of the internet. It was a tapestry of low-res images, comic sans, scrolling banners, and painfully slow dial-up connections. Back then, it was hard to imagine what a ubiquitous and important thing it would become. In fact, an infamous Newsweek article dating back to 1995 was titled The Internet? Bah!
Harder to imagine still was the impact it would have on industry and media publications in particular.
Today, the traditional media industry is in crisis. Since the internet began to provide open and free access to news and media content, leading publications have struggled to find viable monetization models. According to Pew Research, non-digital advertising revenue fell by 10% in 2015 alone, and in 2014, the latest year for which data was available, newsroom employment also declined by 10%. A handful of forward-thinking legacy publications the New York Times and the Washington Post, for example have begun to find their feet in the tough new digital landscape. Others like Buzzfeed are turning to direct sales to bolster revenues. Within the next five years we are likely to see half of todays legacy media businesses go bust if they cannot start making profits.
While the new ecosystem will kill off many players, it will leave a less crowded playing-field for those that can adapt quickly to the new conditions and find means of monetizing in the digital world.
The impact the internet has had on the media from the early 1990s to the tech bubble was massive. But how did we reach this stage?
What was the early impact of the internet?
The first half of the nineties saw a small number of news-sites pop up, with Bloomberg, Wired and MTV all launching in 1993. They were shortly followed by the Economist, Telegraph.co.uk, Velonews, and Jerrys Guide which would become Yahoo! in 1994, before CNN Digital went live in 1995.
However, early users were most excited about the recreational uses of the internet. The prospect of sharing ideas and opinions with people on the other side of the world resonated far more than the idea of consuming content and reading the news.
In Mark Butlers book How to Use the Internet, released back in 1994, newsreaders are featured low on the list of functions, with more focus put on electronic mail, and finding people to communicate with.
Early Pew Center research into internet saturation in the U.S. in 1995 revealed that 14 percent of the country was already online. But the slow and expensive process of logging on through dial-up modems held back the newfound past-time as a novel hobby rather a day to day activity for the majority.
Of course, this made the internet’s global success hard to predict, and its eventual impact on traditional media was entirely unforeseen.
How did legacy media companies interact with the early internet?
In the mid 1990s, the web was a mess. There was no Google, and it was very challenging to navigate through pages that were often unedited. As a result, people in the media saw the early World Wide Web as a curiosity and nothing more.
Very few newspapers could afford or had the expertise to create online outlets, nor was there much desire to. The investments required to build out websites were steep, with Time Warners celebrated Pathfinder site reputedly costing $120 million to build. The audience was, at that time, very limited.
But then something remarkable happened. Online banner advertising began in the early 1990s as page owners sought additional revenue streams to support their content. It was an unexpected success.
The first clickable web ad was sold by Global Network Navigator in 1993, and the first AT&T ad on HotWired had a 44% click-through rate (CTR), a number unheard of today. As the famous statistic goes, youre more likely to survive a plane crash than you are to click on a banner ad and an average CTR on a Facebook advertisement today would be closer to 1%. By the late 1990s, due in part to higher user numbers and impressive CTRs, hundreds of U.S. newspapers began publishing online versions.
The electronic newspaper is part of a strategy to extend the readership of the Times and to create opportunities for the company in the electronic media industry, said Martin Nisenholtz, president of The New York Times, in 1996 when the newspaper introduced its website.
How did media publications feel about the internet at the end of 1990s?
By 1999, the estimated number of worldwide internet users had reached 150 million, with more than half of them based in the United States. The dot-com boom was well underway, and investors and consumers alike were going crazy for anything internet.
While internet saturation had increased dramatically, and traditional media outlets were starting to take more notice of the potential of web, at this point the internet still did not pose a threat to the media industry.
Somewhat counterintuitively, a 1997 study by Robinson and Godbey found that computer use was in fact linked to an increase in the consumption of print. This was most likely down to higher-socioeconomic groups cultural favoritism for print media. However, in the midst of the dot-com boom, experts had begun to predict an impending shift.
A 1998 report by Forrester Research stated advertisers will increasingly migrate to online businesstobusiness sites, and that trade publishers are lagging behind Web startups.
The late nineties saw media moguls like Rupert Murdoch a self professed internet skeptic take a step into the digital unknown. In April 1999, Murdochs News Corp formed the venture capital company epartners with $300 million to invest in the internet, interactive television and wireless communication. At this point, News Corps stance was to use websites as a commercial tool to extend the brands of existing media outlets.
By then, most leading news outlets had extended their services online. However, even at the peak of the dot com boom, online news was viewed as a profitable extension of regular print news media, rather than a direct competitor.
Nevertheless, advancements in internet technology would open the door to a much richer multimedia experience, bringing video to users screens as well as an enhanced sense of community and interaction. This would begin to make online news more appealing to the average news reader than the paper dailies on which they had relied for so many years.
The challenges the media are facing today stem from that early, chaotic digital frontier. With a massive growth in users and the global and scalable nature of the web, however, there were clear indications that the internet would be a game changer.
Today, we are seeing similar beginnings, with the rise of artificial intelligence, the internet of things, and virtual and augmented reality. Whether these affect the media industry in a positive or negative way really depends on how we leverage and prepare for them. Its time to learn from the lessons of the past: The one thing we shouldnt do is underestimate just how reactive we need to be to new technology and media in the future.
