136: Emmylou Harris // Wrecking Ball
Tumblr media
Wrecking Ball Emmylou Harris 1995, Elektra
What side were you on in the Lanois Wars? No matter whether it was Sucks or Good, we all lost. All I see is an endless grey expanse of stormclouds thundering with muffled floor toms, ground heaped with murky guitar tones and broken aviators, waves of reverb washing against a tastefully emptied shore. Probably the worst thing anyone can really say about Lanois’ serenely wreathed production on the series of career reclamation projects he helmed in the ‘90s (Dylan, Nelson, the Neville Brothers etc.) is that it’s all a bit mannered, that it doesn’t fully trust these icons to impress on their own steam anymore. There are plenty more sphincterous rings of producer hell than that in my estimation; those albums all did what they set out to, and sound pretty great. At his best, “Eno’s pet romantic” (as Robert Christgau once called him) brought the most stirring grand gestures of New Age/ambient to rock, creating music that felt like glimpsing heaven on a rainy day.
(God that paragraph was stupid. I should’ve cut that whole bit right? Moving on.)
These days Lanois produces infrequently—by the 2000s he'd become an artisan who specialized in a single expensive, antiquated handicraft, dealing to a small clientele of legacy artists looking to tastefully evoke their own previous triumphs (e.g. U2) or to tastefully evoke the previous triumphs of someone else (e.g. The Killers). In 1995 though, when he worked with Emmylou Harris on this comeback album, he was at the height of his reputation as an elder-whisperer, and the narrative around the album all but said he had to dig Harris out of her grave and shoot her with the Re-Animator serum to give her career back to her. (Never mind that Harris was just 48 years old and both looked and sounded as great as she ever had.)
youtube
Wrecking Ball was certainly a radical change in her presentation to this point in her career. Out went the Nashville session guys, in exchange for heavyweights from her new producer’s rolodex (notably Larry Mullen, Jr., Brian Blade, Daryl Johnson, fellow Canadian Malcolm Burn, and Lanois himself on guitar). Moody, Anton Corbijn-esque portraits replaced the teased-up hayloft glam photography of her last few releases. Back in the ‘90s and early ‘00s the clichĂ© answer to someone asking what kind of music you like was, “Oh, everything except country and rap.” Like Johnny Cash’s American Recordings series, Wrecking Ball was about retouching Harris’ star persona to allow more rock fans to relax their biases and enjoy her for what she’d been all along.
Harris may be my favourite country singer. While she’s capable of a powerful holler, her greatest gift is her softest, the way she allows her voice to become so breathy it trembles in and out of hearing—on the ballads her vocal lines are like landscapes naturally hollowed out by the wind. Even when she was a teenager, she wielded her staggering voice as though it were an instrument of glass, so still and introspective compared to the Tammy Wynettes and Tanya Tuckers who dominated the genre in the ‘70s. These qualities only came into sharper focus as she aged—listen to her parched whispers on Neil Young’s “Wrecking Ball,” the way she gathers strength as she builds to the cosmic chorus of “Waltz Across Texas Tonight” (a rare co-writing credit, with Rodney Crowell).
Despite her many successes as a solo artist, she’s if anything better known as a peerless backing vocalist, willing to give herself over to help others accomplish their own visions. The stuff that most explicitly resembles Lanois’ solo work (e.g. “Deeper Well,” “Blackhawk”) is perfectly fine, but seems better suited to like a Robbie Robertson solo album than one of Emmylou’s. The record is better when it plays to its star’s established strengths—not because she’s incapable of doing different things, but because it’d been too long a time since those strengths were treated as delicately as they are here. Again, as with American Recordings, I don’t believe Wrecking Ball is its artist’s ‘definitive’ work. But it is a very satisfying repackaging that bought her an entrĂ©e to a non-country audience that otherwise might’ve taken much longer to embrace her, and an enduring record on its own merits.

1984 is considered one of the greatest and most influential years in music history. madonna and prince were pushing the envelope on sexuality in both music and visual presentation. michael jackson was biggest star on the planet. run dmc was helping to expand the reach of hip-hop, and tina turner had mounted the greatest musical comeback. all this happened with the backdrop of the ongoing cold and the growing AIDS epidemic. the latter may have been a probable reason why queen’s music video for “i want to break free,” which featured band members in drag, faced immense resistance from MTV and US radio. so much so that the band didn’t begin to regain traction at US radio until the early 1990s.
how does this all relate to queen’s late 1984 holiday release, “thank god it’s christmas?” well, i think the lyrics kind of describe the sh*t show that was 1984 while also giving a slice of hope for the future.
the song opens with:
“oh, my love, we’ve had our share of tears
oh, my friend, we’ve had our hopes and fears
oh, my friends, it’s been a long hard year”
by the end of 1984, more than 5,000 people, mainly gay men, had died from AIDS complications.
youtube
by the release of "thank god it's christmas" on november 27, 1984, queen had established itself as one of the world's most iconic and enduring bands. with a string of hits and groundbreaking albums, the band garnered a reputation for its eclectic musical style and theatrical performances.
queen's rare foray into holiday music, "thank god it's christmas" was written by lead guitarist brian may and drummer roger taylor. the melancholy song, anchored by freddie mercury's emotional vocal, does not emphasize the commercial aspects of the holiday. the song instead centers on the joy, reprieve and peace that people aspire for the holiday season to provide.
the hook is an emotional pleading of reprieve:
thank god it’s christmas, yeah
thank god it’s christmas
thank god it’s christmas
can it be christmas?
let it be christmas
everyday.”
the final verse delivers a hard truth wrapped in a tinge of hope:
“Oh, my love, we live in troubled days
Oh, my friend, we have the strangest ways
all my friends on this one day of days
thank god it’s christmas
yes it’s christmas
thank god it’s christmas
for one day”
freddy mercury was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987 and died on november 25, 1991. he was 45 years old.
“thank god it’s christmas” resonates today as much as it did almost 40 years ago. we are still hoping for reprieve, peace, and rest—even for just one day.

For God's sake put Johnny Rivers into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Dude has paid his dues from New York to Louisiana back to Greenwich Village and onto L.A.
Born in New York city in November 7, 1941 Johnny showed an early interest in music, particularly the guitar. He began playing guitar as a child and was heavily influenced by the rock and roll and rhythm and blues music of the 1950s. In the late 1950s, Rivers and his family relocated to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. There, he continued to develop his musical skills and perform in local bands. In the early 1960s, Rivers returned to New York City to pursue a career in music. He adopted the stage name "Johnny Rivers" and started performing in Greenwich Village coffeehouses and clubs.
As everybody knows by now, Greenwich Village was exploding with musical talent at the time an explosion that would change the culture of America. Johnny was part of that Greenwich village scene and vibe. Rivers' talent and determination caught the attention of record executives. In 1963, he signed with the Imperial Records label and released his debut album, "Johnny Rivers at the Whisky Ă  Go Go," which was recorded live at the famous Whisky a Go Go nightclub in Los Angeles.
Everything was changing. The Beatles had arrived and the British Revolution was in full force. American rock music was in retreat. Then outta nowhere, Memphis happened. Rivers' residency at the Whisky a Go Go in 1964 helped catapult him to stardom. His energetic live performances and chart-topping hits like "Memphis" and "Mountain of Love" solidified his reputation as a dynamic performer and a leader in the comeback of American rock.
His first album, Live at the Whiskey a Go Go led the movement towards making live albums with their imperfections and crackling "you are there "vibrancy. Imperfection is at the heart of rock and roll. Johnny began residency at the LA Nightspot. The "scene" was switching from Liverpool to Los Angeles.. The Whiskey was at the center of that transition. Ground zero so to speak.
Johnny was 21 years old at this time. His voice had accents of Louisiana, Greenwich, and L.A. Nobody sounded quite like Johnny Rivers.
Johnny moved on to recording and production which enabled other emerging bands to take up residence at the Whiskey in Johnny's wake. Here are some of the American bands who quelled the British invasion and followed in Johnny's footsteps.
The Byrds, known for their folk-rock and psychedelic sound, had a residency at the Whisky in the mid-1960s following Johnny. Their unique blend of folk and rock helped define the folk-rock genre and left a lasting impact on music. Their recording of Tambourine Man was the beginning of the burgeoning genre of Dylan interpretation
The Doors, fronted by Jim Morrison, became one of the most iconic rock bands of the era. They had a residency at the Whisky a Go Go in 1966, and their performances there helped them gain widespread recognition as they set the night on fire.
The Love: Love was an influential psychedelic rock band that was also part of the Whisky's house band rotation. Their fusion of rock, folk, and psychedelic elements made them a standout act during their time at the venue.
Buffalo Springfield: Buffalo Springfield featured Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Jim Messina and Richie Furay and their residency at the Whisky contributed to the rise of folk-rock and the emergence of these four legendary musicians.
Frank Zappa and his band, The Mothers of Invention, also had a significant presence at the Whisky a Go Go in the mid-1960s. Their unique and experimental approach to rock music, blending elements of rock, jazz, and avant-garde, made them a standout act during their time at the venue.
The Mothers of Invention's residency at the Whisky a Go Go helped them gain exposure and build a dedicated following. Frank Zappa's innovative compositions and satirical lyrics set him apart from many of his contemporaries, and the Whisky provided a platform for him to showcase his groundbreaking music.
Zappa's time at the Whisky a Go Go contributed to his growing reputation as a boundary-pushing musician and composer. It was during this period that he recorded some of his early albums, including "Freak Out!" (1966) and "Absolutely Free" (1967), which are now considered classics of experimental rock.
Overall, Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention's residency at the Whisky a Go Go was a pivotal moment in their career, allowing them to explore their unique musical vision and laying the foundation for Zappa's legendary and influential career as a musician, composer, and producer.
So let's give Johnny some rub for folk rock, psychedallic, fusion rock, freak rock, and the beginning of American super groups. Byrds, Doors, Mothers, Springfield, Love, CSNY, Crazy Horse, Poco, Burrito Brothers, Loggins and Messina, Eagles are all part of this connection and Johnny Rivers is not only on the same page; he's in the same paragraph which is the one you just read.
Oh yeah
After his residency at the Whiskey, , Johnny continued to release successful albums and singles, including hits like "Secret Agent Man" and "Poor Side of Town." His ability to blend rock and roll, blues, and soul elements in his music contributed to his enduring popularity.
Along the way, Johnny was at the forefront of blue eyed soul. Blue-Eyed Soul refers to white artists who bring a soulful, rhythm and blues-influenced sound to their music. Rivers' soulful vocals and his ability to interpret and perform R&B and soul songs were notable features of his career. Hits like "Poor Side of Town" and "Midnight Special" showcased his soulful singing style and his genuine connection to the genre. His success in blending elements of soul and rock contributed to the popularity of Blue-Eyed Soul in the 1960s and beyond. Johnny's ability to infuse various musical influences into his work helped broaden the scope of the genre. His covers of songs by African American artists, such as Chuck Berry and Willie Dixon, helped bridge racial divides in the industry and contributed to the integration of rock and roll.
He started his own recording label, Soul City records where he discovered and recorded and produced the Fifth Dimension. Under Rivers' guidance, The 5th Dimension released their debut album in 1966. The group went on to achieve significant success in the late 1960s and early 1970s with hits like "Up, Up and Away" and "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In."
Bob Dylan has praised Johnny Rivers' rendition of his song "Positively 4th Street," which includes the lyrics "You've got a lot of nerve to say you are my friend." Johnny Rivers covered this song and released his version in 1966.
Bob Dylan, the original songwriter and performer of "Positively 4th Street," reportedly appreciated Johnny Rivers' interpretation of the song. Rivers' version captured the spirit of the song while adding his own style to it. It's worth noting that Dylan's songs have been covered by numerous artists over the years, and Johnny Rivers' take on "Positively 4th Street" is considered one of the notable covers of Dylan's work.
This recognition from Bob Dylan underscores Johnny Rivers' ability to interpret and deliver songs from a wide range of songwriters while adding his unique touch to them. It also underscores Dylan's move to electric which added a whole new chapter to rock and roll.
Johnny Rivers' music continues to resonate with audiences of all ages, proving the enduring power of his artistry. His songs are timeless, evoking the spirit and energy of the 1960s while remaining relevant in today's music landscape. Artists from various generations have cited Rivers as an influence, highlighting his enduring impact on the rock genre.
The late Tom Petty, a rock icon in his own right, mentioned Johnny Rivers as an influence on his music. Rivers' straightforward rock and roll style may have contributed to the sound of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
John Fogerty has acknowledged Johnny Rivers as an influence on his songwriting and music. Both artists share a love for American roots music and a knack for crafting memorable rock and roll songs.
Bruce Springsteen, often hailed as "The Boss," has spoken about how Johnny Rivers' live album "Johnny Rivers Live at the Whisky Ă  Go Go" influenced his own live performances. Rivers' dynamic stage presence and connection with the audience left a lasting impression on Springsteen.
Bob Seger, known for his classic rock hits, has cited Johnny Rivers as one of the artists who influenced his music. Rivers' energetic live performances and his ability to convey emotion through his songs resonated with Seger's own style.
John Mellencamp, known for his heartland rock sound, has acknowledged Johnny Rivers as an influence. Rivers' blend of rock and folk elements may have contributed to Mellencamp's musical approach.
These are just a few examples and Johnny's influence on other artists extends beyond these names. His contributions to rock and roll and his ability to connect with audiences through his music have left an indelible mark on the music world, inspiring generations of musicians to follow in his footsteps.
Johnny is 82 years old now and still performing. Put him in he Hall now. If he's left out of the Hall before his death, it would be a pity and a black mark on the credibility of the Hall itself.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame stands as a testament to the rich history and immense influence of rock music. It honors the artists who have made significant contributions to the genre, shaping its evolution and leaving an indelible mark on the world of music. In this context, it is bewildering that Johnny Rivers, a rock and roll legend, has not yet been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
User what was Johnny's relationship with the fifth dimension ChatGPT Johnny Rivers and The 5th Dimension were both successful musical acts in the 1960s and 1970s, but they were distinct from each other and had no direct professional relationship or collaboration that is widely known.
Johnny Rivers was known for his rock and roll, folk rock, and blue-eyed soul music. He had numerous chart-topping hits during the 1960s and 1970s, such as "Memphis," "Secret Agent Man," and "Poor Side of Town." Rivers' music had a different style and sound compared to The 5th Dimension.
The 5th Dimension, on the other hand, was a vocal group known for their harmonious pop and soul songs. They achieved great success with songs like "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" and "Up, Up and Away." The group's music was characterized by intricate vocal arrangements and a more pop-oriented sound.
While Johnny Rivers and The 5th Dimension were both part of the vibrant music scene of their time, their musical styles and careers followed separate paths, and there is no notable collaborative or direct professional connection between them.

User what in the heck is keeping him out of the hall ChatGPT The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction process is known to be highly competitive and subjective. While Johnny Rivers has had a successful and influential career in music, there can be various reasons why he has not yet been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Some of these reasons might include:
Competition: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has a limited number of inductees each year, and there are many deserving artists and bands across different eras and genres. The competition for induction can be fierce, and not every deserving artist can be inducted in a given year.
Criteria: The Hall of Fame has specific criteria for induction, which can include the influence and impact of an artist's work on the development and evolution of rock and roll. While Johnny Rivers has had a successful career and left an impact on the music industry, the Hall of Fame's selection committee may consider other factors when making their decisions.
Genre and Style: The Hall of Fame covers a wide range of rock and roll subgenres and styles. Sometimes, certain subgenres or styles may be more heavily represented in a given year, which could affect the induction of artists from different musical backgrounds.
Subjectivity: Ultimately, the selection of Hall of Fame inductees is subjective and based on the opinions and decisions of the Hall's voting committee. While there are guidelines and criteria, personal preferences and biases can influence the selection process.
It's important to note that induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can also happen posthumously, and an artist's legacy can continue to be recognized and celebrated even if they were not inducted during their lifetime. Johnny Rivers' contributions to rock and roll are appreciated by his fans and peers, regardless of his Hall of Fame status.

These are just a selection of Johnny Rivers' hits, and his career includes many more songs that contributed to his status as a respected and influential figure in the world of rock and roll and popular music. His ability to adapt and experiment with different genres and styles is reflected in his diverse catalog of music.
User which is the best example of go go music ChatGPT Go-Go music is a genre with its roots in Washington, D.C., and it's characterized by its infectious rhythms, call-and-response vocals, and a strong focus on percussion and audience engagement. The genre was popularized by artists like Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers. One of the most iconic and best examples of Go-Go music is the song "Bustin' Loose" by Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers.
"Bustin' Loose" was released in 1978 and quickly became a Go-Go anthem. The song features a driving beat, funky guitar riffs, and the distinctive Go-Go call-and-response style. Chuck Brown's charismatic vocals and the band's tight instrumentation create an irresistible groove that's impossible not to dance to.
This track not only embodies the musical elements of Go-Go but also captures the energy and spirit of the genre's live performances. "Bustin' Loose" is widely regarded as one of the most influential and enduring songs in the Go-Go genre, and it remains a classic example of this unique style of music.
User How is Johnny Rivers related to go go music ChatGPT Johnny Rivers is not directly related to the Go-Go music genre. Go-Go music is a genre that originated in Washington, D.C., in the late 1960s and is characterized by its infectious rhythms, call-and-response vocals, and a strong focus on percussion. It has its roots in funk, soul, and R&B.
Johnny Rivers, on the other hand, is primarily associated with rock and roll, folk rock, and blue-eyed soul. While he had a successful career as a musician and made significant contributions to the world of music, his style was distinct from the Go-Go genre. Rivers was known for hits like "Memphis," "Secret Agent Man," "Mountain of Love," and "Poor Side of Town," which were more aligned with rock and pop music of his era.
The connection between Johnny Rivers and Go-Go music is not a direct one, as he did not play a significant role in the development or popularization of the Go-Go genre, which had its own set of influential artists and bands, primarily centered around Washington, D.C.
User but his songs had the go go feel ChatGPT While Johnny Rivers is primarily associated with rock and pop music, it's possible that some of his songs may have incorporated elements or rhythms that share similarities with Go-Go music. Go-Go music is known for its infectious rhythms and percussive elements, and these characteristics can occasionally be found in the work of artists from various genres.
It's important to note that Go-Go music is a distinct genre with its own origins and unique sound, primarily associated with Washington, D.C. While some songs by artists outside of the Go-Go genre may have elements reminiscent of Go-Go, it's not accurate to classify Johnny Rivers as a Go-Go musician or to say that his songs had a definitive Go-Go feel.
Johnny Rivers' music is more closely associated with rock and roll, blues, folk rock, and blue-eyed soul. However, music often draws inspiration from various sources and genres, and it's possible for artists to incorporate different influences into their work. If you believe that some of Johnny Rivers' songs have elements reminiscent of Go-Go music, it may be due to the influence of rhythm and blues or other musical styles present in his music.
User what artists site Johnny as an influence ChatGPT
These are just a few examples, and Johnny Rivers' influence on other artists extends beyond these names. His contributions to rock and roll and his ability to connect with audiences through his music have left an indelible mark on the music world, inspiring generations of musicians to follow in his footsteps.
User didn't Johnny discover the Dimension ChatGPT I apologize for the previous incomplete response. Yes, you are correct. Johnny Rivers played a significant role in helping to discover The 5th Dimension and in getting their career off the ground. He was instrumental in introducing them to a wider audience.
Johnny Rivers, who was running his own record label, Soul City Records, in the mid-1960s, discovered The 5th Dimension and signed them to the label. Under Rivers' guidance, The 5th Dimension released their debut album in 1966. The group went on to achieve significant success in the late 1960s and early 1970s with hits like "Up, Up and Away" and "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In."
So, Johnny Rivers did indeed have a role in discovering and helping to launch the career of The 5th Dimension, making him an important figure in their early success.
User Bob Dylan thought Johnny did a great version of "you've got a lot of nerve to say you are my friend" ChatGPT Yes, you are correct.

Your stories & regency movies are my happy place currently in a world of awful. Also, so glad you're inspired to start into On the Run again because I love it! ALSO ALSO - another reality show prompt if you're interested lolol. Sansa is the host of a reality show (dating? survivor-y? Skill-based forged in fire-y?) and Jon is on the show. Maybe fans of the show are obsessed with them?
first - thank you anon, I'm so happy you like my writing! That's so sweet
second - funnily enough, @hilarychuff and I MAY have gone on a tangent a long time ago about alternate Bachelor stories, including one where Sansa was hosting Bachelor in Paradise (and I even wrote a bit at that time, too). Smash cut to me getting this prompt, and I was immediately reminded of that. So thank you anon, for the prompt, which got me to finish the snippet I had started writing, and thank you to hil, for helping brainstorm & come up with ideas! I didn't even get to use most of them, but they will live rent free in my head.
third - this is in no way related to my full Bachelor story, I just have a problem. And yes, I did write this during the 3 hour Bachelorette finale last night. It kept me sane.
.
read it here:
ephemera, chapter 30
.
Sansa rolls her luggage into the hotel room, depositing it near the foot of the bed before turning and flopping face down onto the mattress.
She can't believe she's back.
One would think, after two disastrous runs on this show, that she would know better than to sign another contract.
First, her time on Joffrey's season that had ended with her in tears, humiliated on national television. Watching that season back had been a revelation. Watching him lie to her. Watching her eat it up. She remembers in the Fantasy Suite, he'd told her he loved her and hinted she was going to be his winner, and she had agreed to sleep with him, thinking he'd be her fiance in another two weeks - only to be dumped in the finale for Margaery.
And then, while she was still emotionally destroyed and with her dignity in ruins, she had agreed to be Bachelorette. She'd signed the contract with the producers telling her this would be her comeback, she would be redeemed, she would get her love story. Instead, what she got was Harry. An actor and musician who she only found out later, after she picked him (after he put a ring on her finger), had a girlfriend already. He was using the show - using her – to further his career.
God, why did she agree to come back?
At least she's only the host this time.

Free vacation, she reminds herself as she sits down with Tyrion, and Varys for her debriefing. That's what they're calling it – debriefing – as if this is some top secret mission and not a reality TV show that, ultimately, is meaningless.
She's reminding herself why she's doing this. Free vacation, and the fat paycheck she would get from it. A big paycheck. They're desperate, after the scandal that ousted Jaime from his iconic host role – one he'd held for over a decade. They had called her up and practically begged her to come to Paradise. They needed the ratings she could bring. Twice-dumped Sansa. Even now, a year and a different Bachelorette later, people are still calling for her return.
It's sweet, really, that people want her to have her love story. It's sweet that they care. And she's lucky, she knows, to have come out the other side of this with a relatively positive reputation within Bachelor Nation. There was even a recent poll where she was voted the most popular Bachelorette of all time.
But the thing is, Sansa can't do this again. She can't have her heart broken on television, in front of millions of people, again.
So she'd turned them down. A hard no. And no, there's nothing they could do to convince her.
Well, that was her stance, until they offered her the host gig. Take over Jaime's role, instead of coming on as a contestant. Get on camera to welcome the actual contestants to Paradise, say a few lines at the elimination ceremonies, do some narration in post-production. Minimal work, considering the amount of money they're throwing at her just so she'll come back. Just so she'll help them rebuild a bit of their crumbling reputation after the scandal.
She can do this.
Free vacation, minimal work, lots of money.

The first round goes fine.
Sansa stands at the entrance to Paradise and greets each new cast member as they show up. She's friends with some of them, and familiar with almost all of them – Dany arrives first, her pale blonde hair in a crown of intricate braids and wearing a silver bikini she barely hides under a wrap. The show had tried to paint her as a villain on Daario's season, but most of the audience ended up liking her anyway, and now she's set to be the star of the beach this season. Sansa can already picture the men tripping over themselves to get with her.
Next comes Theon, from Val's season, all cocky smile and waggling eyebrows as she greets him. Then Mya, Dickon, Myranda... the list goes on. She loses track of who she greets, and by the end of it, her cheeks hurt from smiling. Then she goes and gives the group a welcome speech, hands out the date card, and she's done.
Back to the hotel for a massage and a drink (or two).
By the time she's nice and relaxed and laying by the hotel pool, she thinks she definitely made the right decision.

The day after the first elimination round, Sansa stands at the top of the stairs leading down to Paradise, waiting for the new arrivals. As she's waiting, she reads the card that has the basic info of the new contestants again, just to make sure she's got it.
First will be Domeric, he was on one of the earlier seasons. She doesn't remember him, and she wonders if the audience will.
Then it's Jon. She does remember him – he'd been on Val's season, the year after Sansa's.
Sansa remembers Jon the way everyone else does – because Twitter went crazy over him. He'd been eliminated night one, and Twitter had gone into an uproar about it. The hashtag #MechanicJon was trending through the whole season, memes were made, a petition was created to make him the next Bachelor. All for a guy who was eliminated night one, who didn't even have an Instagram account until he became internet famous and had to create one because of all the fake accounts that were popping up.
She's surprised he's here, honestly.
Though to be fair, the contestants are actually paid for Paradise, so he probably figured why not – a couple grand for three weeks of shooting, plus a free vacation to Sayulita? She's here for the same reasons.
Domeric comes down first and he's nice enough. She greets him and hands him the date card, and he heads in, no issues.
Then Sansa's dabbed with oil blotters, she's given a fresh coat of powder to try and hide how ungodly hot it is here, and then she's back in position, waiting for the next arrival.
Jon comes down next, and she will admit, she does understand the appeal of him. He's so unlike most of the other contestants – he's a mechanic from Boston (which actually isn't too far from her hometown). From the brief minutes of screentime he got, plus the bits she's seen of him on social media, he almost seems like a sort of anti-contestant. Someone she never could have imagined would go on the show. She thinks she remembers some article, where he said his niece had begged him to go on, which is the only reason he did.
“Welcome to Paradise,” she greets when he makes it to her. He's even more handsome in person, she thinks idly.
“Uh, thanks,” he says, then seems to rethink it and adds, “it's great to be here.”
He's a bit awkward, she thinks he doesn't really know how to hold himself in front of cameras. It's refreshing, actually, and sort of cute. He gives her a tentative smile that she returns in full, and her smile seems to give him a bit of confidence - she watches his shoulders square and his spine straighten, and his own smile gets wider.
“Now, you had such a short run on the show, are you excited for the possibility of finding love here in Paradise?”
“Yeah,” he says, though he doesn't sound convinced.
“Let's try that again, with a bit more enthusiasm,” Tyrion calls from behind the camera, and Jon winces. “Say you're excited to get a real chance at love. You're looking for The One.”
She can see Jon hesitate, and she realizes now why he was sent home night one. He doesn't seem as willing to play the game as most of the others, and if Val was on the fence about him, Sansa can imagine the producers telling her to cut him, knowing he wouldn't be easy to control.
That's what they like, she knows. Easily controllable contestants, or the ones who create explosive drama. Jon, it seems, is neither. She thinks the only reason he made it to paradise is because of his sudden spike of popularity.
“I'm really excited to... see what comes out of this for me,” is what he ends up saying, and Sansa tries to suppress her smile, just knowing Tyrion is likely fuming. The producers want the contestants to talk about love as much as possible, and Jon isn't giving them what they want.
“Well, here's a date card for your first chance at love here in Paradise,” she says, holding out the envelope to him. “You can ask anyone.”
Jon nods, looks at the envelope, then back up at her, eyes flicking over her briefly. “Would you want to go?” he asks, and for a moment all Sansa can do is stare.
“Me?” she asks, completely dumbfounded.
“Yeah,” he shrugs, giving her another one of his smiles.
To her utter horror, she feels a swirl of butterflies in her stomach.
“Uh,” she looks towards production for help, but Tyrion is watching them intently and hasn't cut. “I'm the host,” she says, turning back to Jon.
“Oh,” Jon's brows furrow a bit. “So... I can't take you on the date?”
“Yeah, that's not really how it works,” she glances over at Tyrion again, who remains silent. “Um, you take the card down to the beach and you talk to the women – or men, whatever you prefer – and see which one of them you'd like to take on a date.” She tries to make her voice light and airy, tries to add a bit of laughter, but she's not sure how well it works.
“You were on the show before, right?” he asks, and she's actually a bit surprised that he doesn't know who she is, considering how much of a mess both her "journeys" had been. He must have gone on the show without ever watching an episode.
“Right,” she nods.
“But I can't ask you,” he says, brows furrowing even deeper. For a second she wonders if he's an idiot, but then she sees the slight quirk to his lips, and she narrows her eyes at him. He's being obtuse on purpose.
“I'm off limits,” she says archly, flicking her hair over her shoulder, and she watches his lips twitch, like he's trying to hold back a smile.
“Okay, I think I've got it now,” Jon nods slowly.
Sansa rolls her eyes at him, and he finally gives her a full grin. It makes the corners of his eyes crinkle, and sends those butterflies in her tummy going again.
“Then you should go on down,” she gestures towards the stairs that lead down to the beach.
He gives her once last look, his eyes raking over her fully, before he heads past her.
Once he's gone, Sansa's knees almost feel like they're about to give out.
It's just the heat, she tells herself, as she heads over to where the cameras are set up.
“Why didn't you jump in?” she asks Tyrion when she reaches them, pulling at the microphone taped to her before Pod even gets there to help her.
Tyrion gives her an appraising look and just shrugs. “That'll make for good TV,” he says, though there's something in his voice Sansa doesn't like. She's been around him enough by now to hear the things he doesn't say, and Tyrion's tone is... well, if she didn't know any better, she'd say he sounds almost giddy.
“Won't it muddle the story?” she frowns, grabbing one of the portable fans from Pod and closing her eyes for a moment as she turns it on her face. “You can't seriously be thinking of airing that. You should be focusing on the actual contestants and whatever romance he finds there.”
Sansa tries to think of the women here and she can't imagine who would even be Jon's type.
Not that she knows what Jon's type is.
She doesn't know Jon at all.
Sansa heads towards the car waiting to take her back to the hotel, and she really does not like the gleam in Tyrion's eye.

“And just to be clear,” Jon says, as everyone watches him pick up a rose from the table, “I'm not allowed to give this to you?”
Sansa can feel her face go hot, just like it does every time he flirts with her.
Everyone on the beach knows he tried to ask her on the date when he first arrived, and now it's a thing. The girls are keeping him on, giving him a rose at every elimination ceremony where they have the power, even though he hasn't formed a romantic connection with any of them. They're keeping him around for this – for the moments when Sansa is on set and Jon will, inevitably, ask if he can give her a rose or take her on a date.
There's a few cheers from the contestants, and Sansa turns a glare on them. Her friends, and even the ones she's not all that close with, are really enjoying this.
“That's against the rules,” she tells Jon, just like she has the last two times.
“Right, right,” he nods, which gets a laugh from the others. Then he turns back, holds up the rose, and says, “Missandei?” Missandei tears up as she steps forward. She'd just had her heart stomped on, and Sansa hates how sad she looks. Luckily she's made friends with a lot of the girls, especially Dany, so Sansa knows she at least has a support system here. “I think you deserve another shot at love,” Jon says as she walks over to him. “Will you accept this rose?”
“Thank you,” Missandei sniffs, giving him a watery smile.
Sansa watches and narrates the rest of the ceremony, then says goodbye to those who were eliminated. As they're wrapping up, Jon makes his way over to her.
“You're still alright?” he asks, murmurs it to her as the crew starts to herd the contestants away. But they leave Jon alone, and she knows it's because Tyrion has told them to. In fact, she's fairly certain there's a camera somewhere, trained on them right now. “Just tell me if-”
“It's fine,” she whispers. He had asked, the first time he did this, if his flirting made her uncomfortable. She had stuttered through her response, which ended up being – no. No, it didn't make her uncomfortable. The only thing that does is that they're being filmed, and she swore she'd never do this again in front of cameras.
“Alright,” he nods, eyes searching her face, like he's trying to make sure she isn't lying. “I'll see you next time, then?”
“Good night, Jon,” she says, trying to sound professional. But it's hard when he gives her a soft smile and his gaze drops to her lips, before he finally turns around and heads off with the other contestants.
“Stop filming me,” she scolds Tyrion the moment they're gone.
“What?” Tyrion says, eyes wide and innocent. “We film everything.”
“I told you I don't want to be a contestant,” she huffs. “So stop-” she waves around at the cameras that are now being packed away, now that Jon's gone.
“Seems to me,” Tyrion hums, eyebrows raised, “you could tell him to stop anytime and he would. Then we'd have nothing to film.”
Tyrion spins on his heel and walks away and she stares after him, mouth agape.

Sansa groans as she zips up her makeup bag, looking at herself one last time in the mirror before she heads back into the living quarters of her hotel room.
Production had interrupted her very important sipping-margaritas-by-the-pool time to tell her she had to get camera ready. She wasn't supposed to film today, so she has no idea what's going on.
There's a knock at her door and she makes her way over to it, expecting Tyrion to be on the other side.
Instead, it's Jon.
“Hi,” she says, eyes immediately darting around the hall to look for the cameras.
Except there aren't any. At least not that she can see. Just a production assistant waiting a distance away.
“Hey,” he says, giving her that same soft, warm smile. “I just wanted to let you know, I've uh... I've decided to leave.”
“Leave?”
“Yeah,” he sighs. “I mean, obviously this isn't for me. I've known that since I got here. I should've left earlier, if I'm being honest, but...”
His eyes meet hers, and something swoops low in her belly that she tries to ignore.
“Anyway,” he continues. “I just wanted to um... here.” He hands her a piece of paper and she unfolds it to find- “My number,” he says, as if she couldn't figure that out. “In case you ever wanted to call me. I don't really look at any social media, so if you tried to contact me that way... but yeah. You can call me if you want.”
Her head feels completely empty of words, and all she can do is nod.
He leaves, then, escorted out by the production assistant who had been waiting down the hall, and Sansa slowly closes the door and goes to sit on the couch.
She's not sure how long she sits there, staring blankly into the distance, when a knock comes at the door and she jolts out of her reverie.
It is Tyrion this time, and he gives her a look.
“Did you get the footage you wanted?” she asks, trying to sound annoyed, though she's still reeling. Still clutching that scrap of paper.
“Didn't get any footage,” Tyrion drawls. “Did you see a camera around?”
She hadn't, but they're sneaky sometimes.
“He asked to come up, but said he wouldn't if we followed him with cameras, so-” Tyrion shrugs.
“Why would you agree to that?”
A look passes over Tyrion's face, something she might almost describe as soft. Affectionate. Or, she would, if she didn't know Tyrion better than that.
“I know we're usually all cynics here,” he says, “and hey, maybe the show's finally brainwashed me, but I think you deserve that love story you were looking for.”
Sansa sucks in a breath as Tyrion reaches out and places a hand on her arm, just for a moment, before he lets go and leaves her hotel room.
Still in a daze, she walks back and sits on the couch, before pulling out her phone, and adding his number.
Hi, she types. This is Sansa Stark.

tell us you top 5 albums of all time!! bonus points if you say why👀
u are evil

honorary mention: electra heart
little known fact but i have been a marina girly since age 12 and saw her live right before shit hit the fan! electra heart is the album that got me into her and though i rarely listen to it anymore (and it’s good but honestly not as good as others on this list) it remains iconic and has a place in my heart
5. melodrama
i don’t have extremely strong feelings on this album the same way i have feelings on the other albums on this list. it’s great though and like
 i am 19. that’s all
4. speak now
speak now and the other taylor album on this list switch places extremely frequently but i adore speak now. it’s so painfully underrated, it displays taylor’s songwriting so well (hot take but i like the songwriting on speak now more than i like the songwriting on evermore) and it’s extremely versatile! 19 year old taylor was even more insane than rep era taylor was and i love her for it
3. whatever people say i am, that’s what i’m not
i love arctic monkeys sooo much and all of their albums are great (yes even tbh&c. fuck you!) but whatever people say i am just has zero skips. honest to god a modern classic. also just generally a big fan of their first three albums bc the themes are way more relatable than everything coming after that
2. reputation
this was gonna be #1 but i changed my mind at the last second. everything i have to say about rep has already been said a million times before but i do genuinely believe that this album was just a couple of years ahead of its time. it’s taylor’s strongest album conceptually and feels very defined as an era. literally the comeback album of the century so far. don’t get me started
1. punisher
i feel like a poser so i feel the need to be pretentious and clarify that yes i liked phoebe BEFORE she was cool (and before punisher came out lol). stranger in the alps is a cult classic but punisher is just honest to god flawless from beginning to end. don’t hmu i can talk about this for days

Since @the-rambling-maiden gave me the kind of validation that makes one cry with joy. I couldn’t wait to publish part 2 of Mahabharata High School AU. Ik it’s too long I’m sorry đŸ„ș.
Senior students in the limelight:
Yudhishthir:
The headboy.
Tries really hard to excell, still is barely above average.
Is driven by the idea that everyone likes him while most of his classmates find him plain annoying. Some of the teachers too.
Is the headboy because for some unknown reason Bheeshma likes him and no one likes to disagree with the principal. Dhritrashtra tried opposing but no one really listens to him.
this kid, Krishna ran a campaign that convinced everyone that Yudhishthir is the best headboy they could have. Without that he had no chance.
Everyone else just accepted and now listens to him because that’s what Krishna wants.
“Okay I’ll give a very interesting lecture in Moral science class.”
- everyone, even the teacher struggles to stay awake.
Draupadi:
Head girl.
Has witty comebacks to everything.
An all rounder.
Looking at her, everyone wonders why someone as under achieving as Yudhishthir gets to be the other school captain.
Changed her name to Panchaali. But everyone still calls her Draupadi. Doesn’t like it, but has made her peace with it.
Is already done with the world’s patriarchal ways which are the basis of the school’s sexist rule book.
Is EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY beautiful.
Once, some juniors went to the principal’s office and saw a picture of the first headmistress. They were all admiring her beauty while Draupadi walked in. And suddenly all the admiration shifted to her.
An iconic friendship quadrent of Arjuna, Satyabhama, Krishna and Draupadi exists right since they joined school.
Had a beef with the Geography teacher, Kunti because had a thing going with Arjuna for a while.
â€œđŸ§šđŸ»â€â™€ïžđŸ„° How are we ignoring our beloved head boy today?đŸ„°đŸ§šđŸ»â€â™€ïžâ€
Arjuna:
Heart eyes uwu.
Soccer team captain.
Is some sort of a ladies man. However, always prioritises his ECAs and Krishna.
All rounder. Had the achievements to be head boy, definitely not the time.
Girls are always crushing on him.
Dated Draupadi in the freshman year, it didn’t work out. Is still best friends with her though.
Currently in a relationship with Subhadra, she’s two years younger, but our boi doesn’t really care because he’s so smitten by her. Bestfs still above her though.
Is Kunti’s favourite kid. Kunti is an actual sweetheart exclusively to him.
Everyone loves him.
Sometimes sick of all the attention he gets.
Major enimity with the soccer team’s vice captain, Karna.
“I WILL PROVE THE VICE CAPTAIN IS NO MATCH TO ME!”
Bheema:
Really tall, really husky, Fitness freak.
Still loves food more than right about anything.
There’s only one person he’d choose over food. The head girl. Some say he has had a crush on her since junior school. Draupadi values him a lot but doesn’t seem to reciprocate the attention he gives her.
Is stupid, but it’s okay because he’s also the good-est boy in town.
Not very bright academically.
Doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.
Literally the BEST basketball player, but all everyone in school seems to care about is soccer and track events :/.
Has anger management issues which land him into trouble very often.
“Panchaali! You should be proud of me, I prevented a murder today, BY CONTROLLING MY ANGER.”
Nakul:
Is a year younger to everyone in his class.
Really cute, really handsome. Is also well aware about this.
Is not much of a ladies man but SO MANY PEOPLE have crushes on him.
Is practically never seen without his guitar and bestf, Sahadev, who is the only one who shares his birth year.
Can be found giving out personalised skin care routines for fun. And Sahadev, being the brains of the duo, charges in cash, that is how both of them get their pocket money.
Goes to the restroom after every period to make sure his hair are still on point.
Has a successful band. Obviously he’s the lead.
“Wow! Who is this beauty!? Oh my God! This is why I use mirrors as mood boosters.”
Sahadev:
Smartest kid in the school. School topper.
Can talk about random trivia for hours, and people like listening to him.
Is either in the library or hanging out with Nakul.
Hates school A LOT.
Sahadev doesn’t attend a lot of classes because he knows teachers aren’t of any help to him.
Always attends maths class, even though he doesn’t like Sir Shakuni. Prolly because he wanted to be Shakuni’s fav but Shakuni only likes the bad boys. Sigh.
Is a walking human encyclopaedia.
“Why is everyone so stupid!? I WANNA GO HOME! I HATE YOU ALL! (Except my boi Nakul).”
Krishna:
(Ik everyone in the fandom loves him v much. Please don’t hate me for this.)
Manipulative to a point its very toxic.
Doesn’t like taking responsibilities and being held accountable
so just tricks people who take up responsibility into listening to him.
The OG heart eyes in the campus.
Still ships Draupadi and Arjuna for some reason. Even though he treats Arjuna’s girlfriend as his younger sister.
So stubborn.
Is good at everything but doesn’t like the lime light.
A Krishna-Shakuni Feud is the best source of entertainment.
Krishna seems to think that every body who disagrees with him is absolutely wrong and would go any length to make a point. Is also sort of disrespectful to the teachers he doesn’t like.
However, has a very captivating charm that makes him most people’s favourite. Shakuni sees through his well planned schemes because he has fully functional brain cells.
Loves his friendship quadrant and a girl from some other school who visits often, a lot.
A feminist. Hates the school’s rule book in a positive manner.
â€œđŸ§šđŸ»â€â™€ïžđŸ„° What mischief should I do today? And how do I trick someone into thinking it was their idea, not mine?đŸ„°đŸ§šđŸ»â€â™€ïžâ€
Karna:
Soccer team vice captain.
Here on a scholarship.
Every girl with daddy issues is head over heels for him.
Uses Hating Arjuna as a personality trait.
Also uses his love for Duryodhana as another personality trait.
Has lots of rumours about him. He doesn’t care because all he cares about is defeating Arjuna.
A lot of students ship Draupadi with him. It’s just stupid. Both of them dislike each other, but are too evolved to care about stupid rumours.
Is extremely generous.
Since the owner’s kid, who is RICH is his bestf, he never misses a chance to slide a meal from the overpriced canteen to any one who forgot lunch.
Suffers from classism and tries very hard to fight the inferiority complex he gets because most kids around are super rich.
Dronacharya dislikes him, he dislikes him back, however, still tries to win him.
Has abandonment issues.
Some say he looks upto Ma’am Kunti for validation.
The cricket coach, Pashuram, likes this kid though.
“Are you challenging me Arjuna!?”
Duryodhan:
Thinks too highly of himself.
Being the owner’s kid makes up for half his personality. The other half is his devotion towards his beloved Karna.
Is probably bi and Has a not so subtle crush on his bestf.
Has another personality that is devoted to trying to convince everyone he should be head boy.
He once started an intervention demanding “Duryodhana should be headbody” and he was also the leader on the intervention. Karna was unwillingly in his support.
Is Sir Shakuni’s favourite bratty kid.
Only listens to Shakuni or Karna.
Comes up with evil and downright mean mischiefs but always fails.
He once tried to full on flirt with Draupadi but got his a*s whooped.
Tried to sabotage Yudhishthir’s reputation but Krishna’s interference led him to fail.
“Where’s Mitr Karna!?!? I get anxiety when I don’t have him or Sir Shakuni around for long!”
“I should be headboy! No head girl. Karna should be headboy 2.”
Dushasan:
Befriended Duryodhana first year of school.
Looks up to Duryodhana. Only imitates his bad qualities. That’s it, that’s his entire personality.
Even Shakuni who loves bratty kids, dislikes this one.
Has more haters than the headboy. Except people hate on him openly.
Total failure.
A bully.
Dushasana can be found in the last room on the third floor of the oldest block very often. That’s the detention room.
Tries to flirt with every girl around, and girls just ew this creep AS THEY SHOULD.
Doesn’t have a personality of his own.
“Dury Bro! HOW DID YOU DO THAT? CAN I TOO PLEASE?”
Sikhandi/Sikhandini:
FEMINIST.
Gender fluid and ready to teach a lesson to anyone who invalidates her.
Strong and independent.
Important member of the soccer as well as the cricket team.
Also, a star athelete.
Has a very strong bonding with Ma’am Amba because VERY similar.
Sikhandi/Sikhandni can be seen gossiping with Amba on the stair case a lot, some claim to have heard them trash talk Bheeshma.
Bold and not afraid to stand for what they believes in without caring about the consequences.
Once they gave herself a third ear piercing, using a compass when Kunti told her a double piercing was a distraction after Yudhishthir complained about it.
Emerges as a parent figure to juniors who are bullied for being different.
“As long as you have the right intentions you’re valid okay?”
Drishtdyum:
Introvert.
Minds his own business.
Manages good grades and a spot in the sports squad.
He found out he shared his birthday with the Draupadi in second grade. Loves her like a sister since then.
The basketball coach sees some spark in him that no one else does.
Is liked by all but doesn’t get the attention he deserves.
Is pretty content with life in General.
Ashwatthama:
Soccer coach’s kid.
Is self aware.
Realistic and practical.
Suffers from major attention deprivation.
Duryodhan lent him a pencil case in second standard. Asshwatthama tries so hard to become his favourite ever since.
The Iconic Karna Dury duo however, ignore almost always.
Expanded the “Duryodhana should be headboy” intervention but his efforts weren’t recognised.
Closeted gay.
Respects superiors while disliking them.
Quite bitter.
“Will this win me Duryodhan’s love?”
Subhadra:
Eyes like forest pools.
Looks up to Draupadi as a role model.
Arjuna is her weakness even though she’s dating him.
Kunti likes her. Doesn’t mind if she’s dating Arjuna.
There’s this brilliant student in the junior section, Abhimanyu. Subhadra and Arjuna spend a lot of time with him together. They sort of look like a very happy family.
Always tops English and History class.
Gossip queen xoxo.
“Draupadi Didi and Krishna bhaiya said so, Arjuna you know I cannot say no to them.”
Dushala:
Is the sweetest person around.
Believes there is some good in every person.
Even hangs out with Duryodhana and squad thinking they’ll change some day.
Karna and Dushala often discuss how to mend this group’s ways, assisted by Dury’s girlfriend, Bhanumati.
Is stuck in a relationship with a jerk but doesn’t have the heart to break up with him.
Is literally kindness personified.
Dushala’s favourite teacher is Gandhaari. Probably because no one else gives the teacher validation and Dushala doesn’t like when someone is sad.
Jayadaratha:
Terrible person.
Only the size of a grain of sand better than Dushasana.
Started Dating Dushala Sophomore year.
Dushala really wants to break up with this jerk but she’s too sweet to hurt someone even as terrible as him so she just avoids him.
Once Draupadi slapped him in public. Dushala cheered the loudest.
Is only relevant because of his girlfriend.
Bhanumati:
Says Duryodhana is an excellent boyfriend.
Corrects her man when he’s wrong.
Is also close friends with Karna.
Led the intervention against the “Duryodhana should be headboy intervention.”
It hurt Dury but it’s okay because Bhanumati has her own thoughts and he respects that. Guess he is actually a good boyfriend.
“OMG DURY!!!! STOP IT! KARNA HOW DO WE STOP DURY FROM DOING ANOTHER F*CK UP?”
Yuyutsu:
Is very lovable.
Boy has no hater.
Somehow was befriended by Duryodhan in junior school.
Feels stuck in the Dury gang ever since.
Secretly, very strongly admires Yudhishthir, Arjuna, Draupadi and of course, KRISHNA.
Is everything you’d wanna fix in Yudhishthir.
Yuyutsu, Dushala and Vikarna trio is bff goals.
“Is there any way I can change my friend group? Face palms”
Vikarna:
Counsels Duryodhana on Yuyutsu’s advise.
There isn’t much to say about him. Dude’s a good guy with humanly flaws.
Feels stuck in Dury gang but has made his peace with their ways.
Dushala, Yuyutsu and Vikarna are often found gossiping with Ma’am Gandhaari, she often warns them about how their other friends are bad kids and they should not get influenced.
“Why!? Because yuyutsu says so that’s why!”
Eklavya:
Here on scholarship.
This poor kid was bullied so much initially when he joined school because of his economic status.
Coach Drona wouldn’t let him into the soccer team because he’s afraid someone might out shine his favourite.
Stays away from the dirty politics in school.
Became a star athelete despite all the odds he faced.
Eklavya was once locked in the washroom before a 100m race on the sports day. No one knows who did that for sure. Although some people claim to know it was Coach Drona.
Rukmini:
President of the theatre club.
Crushes on Krishna for an unknown duration.
Krishna does give her attention because EXCUSE ME, she is impossible to ignore.
Rukmini befriended Nakul in the corridors as they bumped into each other after every period, while going to/coming from the washroom to check their respective hairdos.
Satyabhama:
Is Draupadi’s psychological twin.
President of the debating society.
Another one of Krishna’s closest friends.
The school is full of Satyabhama-Krishna shippers. But their friendship quadrant knows Krishna is smitten by this girl from some other school.
Radha:
The girl from some other school.
Probably goes to an all girls convent school.
Is shy but can be seen having a a gala time with Krishna after school. Friends w Subhadra too.
Nobody in school knows much about her but it’s evident Krishna and her are 11/10 soulmates uwu.
Rukmi:
Rukmini’s twin brother.
Is overly protective of his sister.
Thinks he’s well sorted but almost always creates a mess.
Has some sort of minor feud with Krishna.
Is neck deep in a very toxic friendship with Shishupal.
Shishupal:
Rebel without a cause.
A headache.
Wants to fight Krishna but is scared of him.
Wants to join the Dury gang but no on lets him in.
Shishupal is known to spread the most problematic rumours in school.
Hidimbi:
Stays occupied in her small social circle of not so popular kids.
She’s famous, though doesn’t talk to many people.
Proposed to Bheem in middle school.
Bheem gently turned her down because he was already mad about Draupadi. Hidimba moved on with life without sulking about it. Probably still likes him though.
Also, really close to this Ghatotkutch person who is in fifth grade.
Ulupi and Chitrangada:
Dated Arjuna for a few weeks each.
Then bonded over how he’s not a good boyfriend and not as perfect as everyone thinks he is. they do have a point though.
Are now bestfs and don’t like anyone else in school.
Since, I’m an attention wh*re tagging: @bigheadedgirlwithbigdreams @soniaoutloud @supermeh-krishnafan @incorrectmahabharatquotes @chaanv @hoeticulture @lemponkoira @1nsaankahanhai-bkr

(1/5) I swear this fic is going to ruin my reputation as a heartless human being. I almost cried when I read aftermath of remus' transformation! Remus cuddling with his rabbit, marauders singing here comes the sun in the hospital wing, peter being really cheerful but yawning as soon as leaving the room bc he's so tired. It was just such a soft and warm scene yet my heart broke for remus as I was reading it. Seriously, it was so beautiful. What did they named the rabbit btw? Will we ever find
heheheh. I love pulling on people's heart strings.
yeah poor Peter. Sirius' betrayal is obviously a lot for remus, but I think some ppl forget how much it probably affected the other marauders. Like Peter and James have to go through a full day of school, handle a werewolf by themselves and one of the core members of their group is gone. and then stay up the entire night and force themselves to be happy in front of their best friend. then any other emotional baggage is just pushed to the side.
(2/5) out? I don't think I will ever get over the fact you gave him a rabbit with floppy ears as a pet. This is my new favorite headcanon about remus! Also can we talk about "my moony" making a comeback again!!!! At this point I don't know who I'm shipping mc with anymore. By the way, it's kind of funny how marauders replaced sirius with mc, he was always afraid of her stealing his friends and it happend bc of what he did, and not because his friends found someone better than him. Honestly, I
Exactly! like the MC rejecting sirius at the beginning of the fic wasn't the reason why he didn't 'like' her. It was a combo of his best friend's paying her a lot more attention, him feeling jealous and left out, her being a punching bag for everything he was dealing with and more. it was childish, but they're also teenagers. Haha, karma bitch
(3/5) feel sorry for him, but at the same time I feel like he deserves this. This was what I felt about him when I was reading ootp, on one hand he was my favorite character but on the other hand almost everything he did made me angry, even when I could see the reasons behind his behavior. I guess this proves how well you write him. Their fight was heartbreaking already and you went and added that italian part, right after she says "I hate you". I loved that mc isn't only angry at him, there are
I see the reasoning behind his actions too. like Snape attacked her x 2, slut shamed her, taunted him about Remus' condition, made fun of his family life... it was a lot and I get why sirius became so reckless and aggressive. but he fucked up. big time. there were so many ways that sirius could've gotten him back.
ah, their fight. very fun to write and a major contrast between Remus' scene. adding the 'I hate you' part was full circle. yeah I also thought the Italian part was just the topper. perfect for angst haha.
also thank you! I always have doubts about the way I write sirius. I appreciate it and it's nice hearing that.
(4/5) still feelings and heartbreak as well as anger. I can't wait to see where their relationship will go and if mc and marauders will be able forgive him (or how will they forgive him). Now, snape... I died when he tried to look for more tips from her book after the tip she gave to him worked. The audacity! He injured her, insulted her every way possible and now uses her potion making tips! But at least hermione was (kind of) right when she said half blood prince could have been a girl,
I didn't think it would be realistic if the MC didn't have some sort of feelings still lingering (not like a school about magic is realistic lmfao). and RIP sirius LMFAO. The one girl he actually had true feelings for just slipped through his fingers. How will he get her back?
HAHAHAH SNAPE! I hate snape. So much. I hated him in the orginal books but the more I write about him, oh my god i wanna hit him.
(5/5) considering some of the things in his advanced potions text book, seems to come from mc. And it seems like mc is going to work on wolfsbane (or at least something similar) and I'm so here for it!!! Thanks for writing this amazing chapter. (P.S. emmeline and her friends pranking james is after what he did might be one of the best things I ever read in my life.) -🌾
I really wanted to add that emmeline bit in! She has like zero lines and only makes a few appearances but hey, she’s already iconic.
Thank you for reading and sending in an ask. I really do appreciate it💗💜🧡

tagged by @gild-and-fire (who also added an “include a memory” rule which seems fun so i’m gonna do that)
rules: hit shuffle on your media player and write down the first 20 songs, then tag 10 people. no skipping!
omfg this one was a fun trip. so many throwbacks. so it’s going under a cut

Secondhand Smoke by Kelsea Ballerini — ooof filed under songs i relate too closely to and often have to skip
Bigger Wow by Avril Lavigne — okay not my favourite song off this album but i got such a serotonin rush when she released this album

Hello! I’m coming to everyone with a few different updates today! This is a bit of a long post under the cut and there will be some more updates and announcements soon, but I wanted to split them up to avoid one super long post. Keep an eye out for another admin post in the near future, but this post still covers a variety of topics that are important for members to read!
Firstly, I want to ask anyone with an opinion on the matter to contribute it to this poll. I’ve been considering adding some of Brown Eyed Girls’ music (namely their three 2011-2015 albums and the rumored upcoming comeback if it happens) to Silhouette’s future model discography. Since Miss A and Fiestar are disbanded and EXID has only one guaranteed Korean comeback left with Hani and Jeonghwa confirmed to be leaving Banana Culture, it feels like a good time to start picking an additional group to give room for more songs to be released by them. Brown Eyed Girls is the standout above any other choices that fit Silhouette’s intended direction to me, but if members have a problem with this addition, I’ll reconsider. I’ll take the opinions of those with muses in Silhouette into special consideration, so if that applies to you, you’re free to message me directly if you have opposition to the addition! Should this addition happen, it is planned to play into a “renewal of Silhouette” plot line eventually (more towards the end of this year), with Gold Star’s creative directors trying to pull them out of what Gold Star perceives as a rut and keep them competitive by pushing the boundaries with more provocative, badass bu still sexy concepts like they were once known for. It will also contrast with the stricter creative and conceptual boundaries Gold Star’s younger girl groups like Fuse and Femme Fatale are kept within.
Secondly, the two previously unavailable BC Soloist spots have been removed. For BC Soloist 1, with Hyuna signing under P Nation, it’s unclear how often she’ll comeback once she starts releasing music again and the spot has been unavailable for so long now it only feels right to reopen it instead of continuing to wait. In character, this will be handled as a situation where an NPC soloist’s contract (someone who had a similar concept/sound to Hyuna, but not specifically Hyuna’s music anymore) simply ended and the soloist chose not to re-sign with BC Entertainment. This would publicly cause BC Entertainment to take a small hit in stocks, but there’s no major drama to it like there was with Goeun’s departure from Lipstick. BC Soloist 2 is being removed since, in the two years since the roleplay opened, I’ve learned it’s hard to tie soloists who fall further outside of the traditional idol bubble into the world of the roleplay, and BC Soloist 2 is the furthest outside still remaining. In character, for him, his existence as a soloist will be erased entirely from BC’s past instead of having left in-character. Hyuna’s and Dean’s discographies are now available as points claims. This means BC currently has no soloist spots for the time being. If your muse had a claim to a past feature or MV claim to one of those two soloists and you’d like to discuss replacing it, please message me! I may be willing to bend certain aspects of past claims rules to find a replacement if we need to since I’m inconveniencing you!
I’d also like to give a quick reminder to anyone who hasn’t done so lately (and maybe even if you have!) to please remind yourself of the in-character contract guidelines and make sure you (and your muses) are keeping those in mind! They’re important and do apply to everyone unless otherwise stated. Please take some time to refresh your memory of the rules elsewhere within the roleplay if you haven’t lately as well!
On the subject of the rules, I have a few reminders about the general roleplay rules.
Please remember that while the rules are flexible about OOC posts on the dash to avoid the problems that can arise with a group chat, there are still rules to follow with OOC posts. Make sure to trigger tag OOC posts just as you would a piece of in-character writing (including tags for NSFW content) and don’t make posts about serious out of character conflict or disagreements on the dash, whether they’re direct or indirect.
Tag all NSFW posts as NSFW and put them under a readmore. It’s one little tag and if you aren’t sure whether something is NSFW, do it anyway to be safe. Muses and faceclaims who are minors in South Korea (under 19 international age) shouldn’t be involved in sexual content on the dash in any manner. Likewise, do not use gif icons or photo resources of a faceclaim when they were underage to accompany sexual content and discussions either. Smut is banned for faceclaims and muses who are not yet adults in Korea, and with that comes other discussions and threads of a NSFW context. This includes any flashback threads where a muse would have been under the age of majority at the time. Again, same thing applies for muns under 18. Don’t lie about your age to be able to write explicit sexual content with your muse, as that will result in a permanent ban from the group. In general, just be mindful and use common sense about what’s appropriate and what’s not when it comes to NSFW content.
Do not god mod or meta game. Don’t assume the actions, thoughts, or relationship to your muse of another muse or an established NPC/executive without getting approval first. Don’t assume your muse knows something about another muse that isn’t explicitly public knowledge just because you as a mun have read something about the muse. Just like NSFW tagging, if you aren’t sure, it’s better to be safe than sorry and ask the mun instead of ending up godmodding or metagaming.
Almost lastly, I’d also like to clear up some questions, address some details, and maybe even tackle some natural changes regarding the Exclusive blog. As the roleplay gets bigger, it gets harder to fit in every possible article someone may want for their muse in a timely manner, so please try to keep article requests and submission to major things like claims (if you’re writing your own claim article) or scandals and major plot progression articles (if they’ve been approved). A lot of occurrences that fall outside of that (though not all!) are going to need a viral moment claim to garner an article and be considered newsworthy. I don’t want to bring in super tight, strict limits to what can be used for an article, but please try to consider what might benefit from an official article and what might work better as a headcanon or detail in a self-para. Submitting an article earns a point because those articles are supposed to develop character/career or showcase a development of character/career, so keep that in mind. This reminder wasn’t brought around by any particular occurrence and it’s not been a problem yet, but I did want to put this out there. Since the Exclusive blog has been putting out more posts lately than it had before, now seems like a good time to mention this in passing! Exclusive is intended to be a news source in a similar vein to Dispatch, meaning they may have a reputation for being invasive and having under-the-table deals with companies, but are still a news source as opposed to a fansite or an idol-only outlet. If you’re ever on the fence about whether something might make a good article in that context, feel free to ask and I’ll be happy to answer!
Lastly, though it’s over a month late, I’d like to give every muse who’s currently in the roleplay (and all muns who have read this whole post) a free 5 points on their trackers in honor of our second anniversary that passed at the beginning of April. You can link to this post on your points tracker as the source of the points.
As always, I’m here for any questions, comments or concerns you may have, and thank you to everyone for your continued activity!

Diabolik Idols
Mun!Sora: This is exactly what it sounds like, except like hardly any of these are actual idols by definition but I don’t give a fuck.
♄ Shuu Sakamaki
Shuu has been raised for the theater, ever since he was old enough to pick up an instrument and almost every waking moment of his life. His mother ensured it. He’s arguably the most famous violinist this side of the world, with a talent for piano and chello, as well; but, his secret is that he has no care for any of it - the fame, the glamour, the money. He didn’t choose this life. It was forced upon him. His passion for music may be strong, but he could care less of the opinions of the masses.
IF YOU PICK HIM: Shuu definitely does not think you’re worth his time. In fact, he thinks you’re a talentless loser; however, just like everything else, your apprenticeship is forced upon him. He doesn’t want to admit it, but, with time, your presence rekindles the passion he possesses for music. You, unlike the others, feel the emotions he puts into his music. Of course, he doesn’t intend to admit this to you. Maybe, you’ll uncover the dark secrets of his melancholy.
♄ Reiji Sakamaki
All Reiji ever wanted was to play music for a crowd, and to hear their cheers of joy and thundering applause. But, his mother never allowed him a chance to shine. Rather, he was forced to be Shuu’s manager, to guide him along, ensure he made it to performances on time, and that all his shows were completely booked. He’s good at it, good enough to make everyone believe he wants nothing more. After more than a decade of keeping his passion a secret, he’s become sorrowfully accustomed to living in the shadows of his brother.
IF YOU PICK HIM: When you pick Reiji, you expect a very simple apprenticeship; he’s going to teach you how to be a manager. He’s a very diligent teacher, albeit a rude one. He teaches you the basics, of course; but, he also teaches you things you never considered - knowledge that will guarantee your success. Then, one night, you accidentally stumble upon him playing a hand crafted chello. His performance is breathtaking, unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Maybe, you, and only you, can help him step into the spotlight for the first time.
♄ Ayato Sakamaki
If you asked Ayato Sakamaki why he decided to give up basketball to pursue an idol career... Well, frankly, he just felt like it. He’s got the looks, the voice, and the dedication... not to mention quite the god complex. Girls can’t help but throw themselves at his feet; yet, none of it is good enough for him. He has money, fame, and all he could ever want, right at his fingertips. There’s something missing, but he has no idea what it is.
IF YOU PICK HIM: Ayato is certain that what he’s missing is an award, something to bring him to the next level; so, why not the King of Idol’s award? Of course, that means he needs a queen. Well, you’ll just have to do, even though you’re a flat chested moron. Every waking moment is spent preparing for the contest. The two of you need to be in flawless harmony, even if he finds your singing quite detestable... or, so he claims. As the days go on and the competition grows closer, you can’t help but wonder if his insistence is still only for the contest.
♄ Kanato Sakamaki
The world doesn’t know Kanato Sakamaki. They know Kana, leader of the lolita fashion world, gothic pop icon... and a girl. Kanato is the spitting image of his mother, except for the fact that he’s a boy. His mother was a legendary fashion icon for the majority of her life, but never had a daughter to follow in her footsteps. Kanato, however, eager to please her, was willing to live a double life, only allowed to be himself when the curtains closed.
IF YOU PICK HIM: When you pick Kana, you’re definitely not expecting her secret... until you accidentally expose it to the world. Kanato absolutely loaths you, and even contemplates hiring a hitman. Unfortunately, his mother disapproves of this idea. Your temporary partnership was supposed to sky rocket his fame, not completely annihilate it... that is, until Kanato realizes that your mistake has freed him from the constricting shackles of a fake existance. Together, you help him realize he can still be Kana... but he can also be himself.
♄ Laito Sakamaki
A well known pianist, who specializes in slow, romantic songs, and also sings whilst he plays, Laito’s music is a favorite in five star restaurants and elegant clubs. His performances are known to be breathtaking, accompanied with fresh roses and dancers. As he might say, “I may not be an actor; but, I am one for... dramatics.” His infamous reputation is that he never goes home alone: a playboy, by day and by night, who’s captured many’a’hearts. Even those who don’t know his name know his work or have heard his voice.
IF YOU PICK HIM: Laito doesn’t take apprentices. He doesn’t have time to teach someone the ways of the piano. But, as a fellow pianist and singer, Laito sees you more as competition, or a means to an end. That alone is the reason he agrees to do some duets with you. But, he finds himself unable to refuse you time and time again. There’s a loneliness to him, ever present in his eyes, that you simply can’t look past. Beyond the glamour, his frequent attempts to woo you, and playful flirting, you see something more... so much more.
♄ Subaru Sakamaki
If you called him an idol, he would scoff at you in disgust. That annoying blonde dude in the pink is an idol. Subaru plays guitar and sings rock and metal, and is the founder and core of White Rose. He doesn’t dance or throw flowers to the crowd. All of his songs are of his own making, originals birthed from his experiences, his suffering, his passions. They’re hardcore, angsty, and occasionally emotional and heartfelt. Yet, Subaru is cold, distant, and definitely not the kind to associate with his fans, or other musicians. He has the reputation for being an unobtainable bad boy.
IF YOU PICK HIM: He definitely does not want to do a duet with you; his manager can kiss his ass. But, if he doesn’t, he’ll lose his record deal. Fuck. Subaru agrees... quite unwillingly, and somehow manages to drag himself to practice. He doesn’t care for the way you sing, or so he says. Your guitar skills are mediocre at best, or so he says. You obviously don’t understand the meaning behind his lyrics... Or, maybe you do, and he just hasn’t noticed yet.
♄ Ruki Mukami
There is no jazz club this side of the world that doesn’t play Ruki’s music on a regular basis. He’s almost a legend, able to capture smooth blues and even the rolling, almost rock’n’roll aspects of jazz. He’s also a favorite in casinos. However, Ruki rarely performs live. He’s a busy man with a reputation to uphold. But, spending little time in the spotlight has greatly diminished his fame. He’s ready to make a comeback... a proper one.
IF YOU PICK HIM: You’re a means to an end, something Ruki makes very clear when he agrees to partner up with you. You’re a very talented jazz singer, though you’re nowhere near Ruki’s level. He likes that, actually; it means you won’t outshine him. But, somewhere along then way, Ruki finds himself not caring when you do outshine him. He flinches away when you accidentally touch him, and loath you calling him anything other than Mr. Mukami. But, you can’t help but wonder what he’s hiding behind those mahogany eyes.
♄ Kou Mukami
He’s been famous his entire life, beginning as a child actor in plays and dabbling in small television roles. Now, he’s an idol, in every sense of the word: music, dancing, fashion, you name it. He’s also self-proclaimed best friend to the lead singer and guitarist of White Rose, though the silver-haired boy denies it. Kou is well adjusted to this life: fame, fortune, money, and literally crawling with women. However, deep down, it doesn’t matter to him, at all. It’s a means to an end, and something to keep himself entertained.
IF YOU PICK HIM: To the outside world, Kou is flirtatious and sweet, generous, even. When you choose him, you’re partnered up for a modeling campaign that’ll involve ads, live dance routines, and even a fabricated romance. “Love sells, kitten,” as he put it. Kou is demanding, with high expectations. He expects you to always look your best, especially if you want to be famous by the end of it. But, at some point, the attention he gives you, the fake dates, and the extravagant romantic gestures, doesn’t seem to be just for the camera anymore.
♄ Yuma Mukami
Since when does one of the world’s best mixed martial arts champions become a musician on the side? Well, it all started when he agreed to sing at one of Ruki’s jazz clubs. The rest is history. Yuma doesn’t consider himself famous; but, he’s a favorite at local clubs and elite bars. He doesn’t really care for it, though. It’s simply something more carefree to do between championships and training. Besides, it’s an easy way to meet ladies who don’t expect him to stick around.
IF YOU PICK HIM: You expected to be Ruki’s associate; yet, somehow, you ended up as Yuma’s... slave. Well, that’s an exaggeration, honestly. But, you expected to get a chance to perform, to play, to sing, not be stuck scheduling and assisting this guy. You stick around, however, hoping the opportunity will come around. Yuma sees your longing for the stage, but expects you to prove your worth it before he’ll give it to you.
♄ Azusa Mukami
Azusa started small, playing his ukulele and ocarina at dive bars and the corners of popular tourist attractions. He got the opportunity to play on the radio and was picked up by a talent agency. One year later, Azusa is making record deals and modeling for boho clothing lines. He’s known for being humble, always wearing T-shirts that show off scars from the days when he was homeless, a past that he keeps well hidden, from everyone, including his agent.
IF YOU PICK HIM: It was actually Azusa’s vocal coach that put him up to this. A duet that would finally get him on the top charts and introduce you into the spotlight... if only it were that simple. He’s never written a duet before, and your presence only seems to make it worse. You’re just likely everybody else - you couldn’t possibly understand his music... It’s not just about the duet anymore, but proving to Azusa that you’re not like everyone else.

it's funny cause red, reputation, and debut used to be the hardest for me to get into BUT THEN (still working on debut tho i'm so sorry! 😬)
"ONLY BOUGHT THIS DRESS SO YOU COULD TAKE IT OFF" "AND I WOKE UP JUST IN TIME NOW I WAKE UP BY YOUR SIDE" THAT "AH, AH, AH"
i love that in reputation is all about owning herself back. owning her name, her reputation, her expression of love, and her sexuality! dress, so it goes, don't blame me, etc etc etc!!! so it goes just makes me think it'll fit johnny 💀
would love to know what makes those albums becomes the most you're beloved!!!
- 🍊
oof red and rep were the easiest for me!! debut tho, same tbh, I'm still working through it myself ;-;
AND SO TRUE CARVE YOUR NAME INTO MY BES POST CAUSE I DON'T WANT YOU LIKE A BEST FRIEND ONLY GOT THIS DRESS SO YOU COULD TAKE IT OFF, TAKE IT OFF OFF OFF AHHHHH (no bc this line fits a wip i have ill keep quiet now huhu)
and SAME!! repuation was just *chefs* kiss in every way because of how badass and raw she became yk!! you say johnny but all i see is taeyong i am so hopeless 🏃 i have so many rep songs of almost all my taeyong fics this is the lebrookestore way of life methinks. oof i LOVE king of my heart so much because its just so!!! you know?? rep truly was that bitch of all comebacks like no one could EVER
and omg could write essays about that, but ill condense each one into a few lines under the cut!
folklore- the lyrics?? the pure artistry and elegance that album exudes is phenomenal and it's literally perfect. the thing that makes this my absolute fav are the connected pieces and stories, because as a writer, this pleases me to no end. i cannot tell you how many times I've literally gone "OH MY GOD THATS A CONNECTION" and scribbled it down somewhere, exactly like that one meme from the office lksdfjndjf i literally have so many theories i can't even-
(so much for a few lines)
evermore- also the lyrics and this one, even though it was a little rawer than folklore has so many gems <3 i adore majorie and epiphany and just ;-;-;-;
reputation: i rambled about rep up but lets go for it again!! i mean come ON the lwymmd is SO iconic and delicate is so sweet and just everything!! also i love how its a love album disguised as a clapback yk. the most i can compare it to is a rose covered with thorns
1989- epitome of pop i think, so many bangers like blank space and i know places and welcome to new york!! there is at least one 1989 song per playlist of mine because its simply the rule
lover- lover, in my opinion, is like glimpses of moments with a loved one, its literally a movie of all the cute, happy, lovely stuff and me being the hopeless romantic i am fell hook line and sinker for it :')
tell me about yours!!!

Britney Spears’ manager said she may never perform again, but many of her fans say they don’t trust him, Defence Online

Britney Spears’ longtime manager Larry Rudolph recently told TMZ that she may never perform again.
“I don’t want her to work again ’till she’s ready, physically, mentally and passionately,” he said. “If that time never comes again it will never come again.”
Fans are primarily concerned with Spears’ health and happiness – but many also say that Rudolph shouldn’t be trusted.
Spears fired Rudolph back in 2007 when he helped send her to rehab. They reunited later, but many believe he forcibly engineered her “comeback” when she wasn’t ready.
Spears recently spent time at a mental health facility in Los Angeles. According to TMZ, she was committed against her will.
Visit INSIDER’s homepage for more stories.
According to Britney Spears’ longtime manager Larry Rudolph, the iconic pop star may never perform again. But according to Spears’ dedicated fans, Rudolph cannot be trusted as her mouthpiece.
Rudolph, who’s credited with discovering a 15-year-old Spears and guiding her early career, recently told TMZ that her Las Vegas residency has been effectively canceled.
“As the person who guides her career – based on the information I and all of the professionals who work with her are being told on a need-to-know basis – from what I have gathered it’s clear to me she should not be going back to do this Vegas residency, not in the near future and possibly never again,” he said.

Spears recently spent time at a mental health facility in Los Angeles, which spawned the #FreeBritney movement from fans who believe she’s being unfairly controlled by her 11-year-long conservatorship, which gives her father legal control over all her medical and financial decisions.

It was originally reported that she checked herself into the facility. But according to a recent report from TMZ, Spears told a judge that her father had her committed and forced her to take drugs against her will.
According to Rudolph, Spears went to the facility and postponed her Las Vegas residency because “her meds stopped working and she was distraught over her dad’s illness.”
“I don’t want her to work again ’till she’s ready, physically, mentally and passionately,” he told TMZ. “If that time never comes again it will never come again. I have no desire or ability to make her work again. I am only here for her when she wants to work. And, if she ever does want to work again, I’m here to tell her if it’s a good idea or a bad idea.”

He later clarified his comments, telling Billboard that he doesn’t want media outlets “implying that Britney will never work again.”
That’s not what I said,” Rudolph told Billboard. “I simply said that the Vegas residency is now officially off and that she hasn’t called me in months to talk about doing anything so I’m not sure if or when she will ever want to work again. It’s that simple.”
Fans were reminded of Rudolph’s role in sending Spears to rehab – and her subsequent ‘comeback’ – in 2007
Amidst Spears’ highly publicized struggles in 2007, which included shaving her head and multiple stints in rehab, she fired and rehired Rudolph twice.
After firing him the second time, she mocked her reputation and management in a video for paparazzi.
“Like, oh my God! Like, the other day, like I was sitting there and I saw these magazines and they said I was pregnant, and like, it’s so true. Like America, believe everything you read. Because, like, you’re smart and I’m stupid. Like for real,” she said, adopting a fake, sing-song Valley Girl accent. “And, like, my management totally knew what they were doing when they sent me to rehab. So right, you know. Just like, I’m just gonna cry right now because the world is so nice.”
She also wrote in an open letter to fans that Rudolph had tried to “direct me and my life” after her divorce.

Spears and Rudolph eventually reconciled and he was brought back as her manager in 2008. Many fans suspect that he forcibly engineered her “comeback” when she wasn’t ready, which included recording her 2009 album “Circus” and a strenuous world tour.
Before embarking on her world tour to promote “Circus,” Spears’ former manager Johnny Write criticized her team for putting her back on the road too quickly.
“A comeback is not what I wish for Britney,” he said. “She is being pushed back into being a money machine.
It’s too soon for her to be a part of a manufactured machine that is pushing her to have to be a success.”

The person who runs the popular twitter account “pop culture died in 2009” believes, “the people surrounding [Spears] are questionable at best.”
Many of the account’s followers agree, believing that Rudolph played a role in exploiting Spears.

In hindsight, the fact that Britney had to shoot nude scenes in a sauna for the Womanizer video is seriously unsettling. They served no other purpose than to show that she’s hot and desirable again. If a 5150 couldn’t put an end to her exploitation
then what will?

Especially after Britney admitted she didn’t want to record Femme Fatale or Britney Jean but was forced to by the conservatorship – the latter album featuring prominent vocals from someone who is not Britney Spears
— bawbby. ???? (@bawbbysworld) May 15, 2019
Much of Spears’ fanbase seems to distrust Rudolph – as well as anyone involved in Spears’ conservatorship, which is currently under investigation.
This is why we’re seeing so many articles with Larry Rudolph himself being quoted as saying he’s not part of the C-ship. He’s being investigated now, along with the rest of Britney’s abusers.
Don’t buy into the “Britney may never perform again” thing, it’s just a distraction. pic.twitter.com/iWTzO1qWGD
— Noah Cassiel (@NCassiel) May 15, 2019
Larry Rudolph forced Britney Spears to go on an 11 month world tour in 4 different continents just a year after she was 5150’d twice. he doesn’t care about her “well being” he cares that he’s on the verge of being removed from ever working with her again https://t.co/UNFW33p6QJ
— morgan spears ~ SAW ENDGAMEx2 (@cokecaineprince) May 15, 2019
Well @LarryRudolph you threw the girl “whos like a daughter to you” under the bus today and got a ton of press in an effort to save your ass. She’s made you millions and millions you have no reason to hate her or treat her as you did today #shameonyou #resignlarry
— tina d (@tinadoy88) May 15, 2019
@LarryRudolph You were fired by Britney twice and participated in a career that didn’t allow her time to heal after traumatic events. You then publicly disclosed sensitive and private details in an effort to save face. Shame on you. #LarryRudolphIsOverParty
— Courtney (@cocarls) May 15, 2019
Some are reposting old videos of Spears that appear to show the constraints of her conservatorship and the issues with her management.

Rudolph’s role in Spears’ life at that time – and much of her life at that time in general – is primarily speculation. Representatives for Rudolph and Spears didn’t immediately respond to INSIDER’s request for comment.

How CR7’s first season ranks with Maradona, Ronaldo & Serie A’s other superstars
The Portuguese has enjoyed a fine debut campaign in Turin but has any other player ever made such an instantaneous impact on Italian football?
Cristiano Ronaldo has enjoyed a successful start to his Italian adventure.
The Portuguese's first season in Turin wasn't without its disappointments, chief among them Juventus' shock elimination at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League by Ajax.
However, Ronaldo could hardly be held accountable in that regard, given they wouldn't have even made it that far without him, with the forward netting a hat-trick in Juve's stirring second-leg comeback against Atletico Madrid in the last 16.
Indeed, the fact that no other Bianconero scored in the knockout stage underlined just how important CR7 has already become to the Old Lady.
Of course, an eighth consecutive Scudetto was always likely, even before Ronaldo's arrival, but he played a pivotal role in their triumph, racking up 21 goals and eight assists.
Those numbers may not have been enough to finish as Capocannoniere but they did result in him being voted Player of the Season, thus making him the first man to win the accolade in Serie A, La Liga and the Premier League.
So, with that in mind, Goal has decided to back through the history books to see if any overseas superstar has ever made such an instantaneous impact on the Italian game...
Gabriel Batistuta
After successful spells with both River Plate and Boca Juniors, Gabriel Batistuta secured a move to Fiorentina in 1991 after firing Argentina to Copa America glory with six goals.
The striker initially found goals hard to come by at the Artemio Franchi, netting only three times by the end of December, but he ended his first season in Serie A with a creditable 13, as a weak Viola side finished 12th.
'Batigol', as he came to be known, struck 16 times during his second campaign but that was not enough to save Fiorentina from the drop.
However, even though Batistuta had established himself as one of the top strikers in Serie A, he resisted offers from elsewhere to help the club secure an immediate return to the top flight, thus earning himself iconic status in Florence.
Batistuta continued to score freely for Fiorentina but despite some near misses, it was only after leaving to join Roma in 2000 that he won a long overdue Scudetto.
Ruud Gullit
AC Milan broke the transfer fee world record in 1987 by signing Ruud Gullit from PSV for approximately £6 million but the Dutchman took time to settle at San Siro, struggling with the Italian language and only scoring two goals during the first half of the season.
However, the forward improved from January onwards, and ended up with nine goals to his name as the Rossoneri claimed their first Scudetto since 1979.
Despite some injury issues, Gullit would go on to become a legend at Milan, whom he helped win back to back European Cups, even scoring twice in the 1989 final against Steaua Bucharest.
Kaka
Despite widespread interest in Kaka's services, AC Milan managed to snap up the Sao Paulo star for just €8.5m (£7.5m/$9.5m), which president Silvio Berlusconi rather prophetically described as "peanuts"!
The attacking midfielder was the revelation of the 2003-04 Serie A season. Kaka had only scored twice by the winter break but he was proving a wonderful creative force, replacing Rui Costa in the starting line-up, and the goals began to flow in the New Year.
Indeed, he ended his debut campaign with 10 in total and was named Serie A Player of the Year for playing such a pivotal role in Milan's title triumph.
Kaka would go on to become one of the finest players ever to grace Italy's top flight, capping a sensational first spell at San Siro by winning the Ballon d'Or after inspiring the Rossoneri to Champions League glory in 2007.
Diego Maradona
If Ronaldo's decision to join Juve was a surprise, Diego Maradona's move to Napoli rocked the footballing world to its very core.
The Partenopei had never even won the Scudetto yet managed to sign the Argentine for a world-record fee from Barcelona in 1984.
Maradona was greeted as a messiah in Naples and certainly achieved God-like status by leading Napoli to two Serie A title triumphs during his six-year stay at the San Paolo.
He did take time to prove his worth, netting only three times during the first half of his debut season, but that was hardly surprising, given he joined a team coming off the back of a 12th-placed finish.
However, he soon made his genius felt and ended his first campaign in Italywith 14 goals, which saw him rank third in the race for the Capocannoniere, just four behind victor Michel Platini.
Michel Platini
Juventus took advantage of the expiration of Michel Platini's contract with Saint-Etienne to sign one of the stars of the 1982 World Cup for a nominal fee in the region of €129,000.
Even at the time, it was a steal. As Juve president Gianni Agnelli famously put it, "We've paid for a slice of bread (an idiom for 'pittance' in Italian) and they've given us foie gras!"
He wasn't wrong either.
Platini started slowly in Turin, only striking four times by Christmas. However, the France No.10 finished with 16 goals to take the first of three consecutive Capocannoniere awards, and three consecutive Ballons d'Or.
Essentially, Ronaldo still has some way to go to emulate Platini's achievements in Turin!
Ronaldo
Inter took advantage of the breakdown in Barcelona's talks with Ronaldo's representatives over a new contract to make the Brazilian sensation the most expensive player in the world for the second time in just over a year, paying £19.5m ($27m) for his services.
The striker had terrorised defences in his one and only season at Camp Nou but he actually looked an even more complete forward at San Siro, quickly earning himself the nickname 'Il Fenomeno' for his goalscoring exploits.
Ronaldo struck nine times by the end of December but added 16 during the second half of the season to finish with 25 in total, claiming the Serie A Player of the Year award in the process.
Sadly, that was to be as good as it got for Ronaldo at Inter because he suffered two serious knee injuries which meant he spent more time on the sidelines than on the pitch during his remaining four years at San Siro.
Frustratingly for Inter, he departed for Real Madrid just after finding full fitness – and his very best form – while firing Brazil to World Cup glory in 2002.
Andriy Shevchenko
The big question hanging over Andriy Shevchenko after his move to AC Milanin 1999 was whether he could replicate his impressive goalscoring feats at Dynamo Kyiv.
The Ukrainian posted an immediate response, netting seven times in his first seven Serie A appearances as he went about reaching the winter break with 10 goals to his name.
The striker proved even more prolific in the second half of the season as he finished with 24 goals to not only win the Scudetto for the Rossoneri, but also claim the Capocannoniere award in his first year at San Siro.
Shevchenko went on to become the second most prolific player in Milan's history and is rightly remembered as a club legend despite leaving for Chelseain 2006 only to then return for an unsuccessful loan spell two years later.
Marco van Basten
Marco van Basten's Serie A career got off to the perfect start with the Dutch striker netting on his debut, in a 3-1 win at Pisa, but his first campaign was decimated by injury and he contributed just three goals in total to AC Milan's 1987-88 title triumph.
Once fully fit, though, Van Basten took the league by storm, racking up 19 goals in his second season at San Siro, and a further 10 during the Rossoneri's European Cup triumph, including a double in the final against Steaua Bucharest.
Van Basten subsequently proved himself one of the greatest centre-forwards the game has ever seen but, cruelly, he was forced to retire in 1995, aged just 31, after spending the previous two years sidelined by injury.
George Weah
Having earned a reputation as one of the most fearsome strikers in world football at Paris Saint-Germain, George Weah was snapped up by Italian giants AC Milan in the summer of 1995.
The Liberian only scored 11 goals in his debut season in Serie A but that was enough for him to finish top scorer for a title-winning Rossoneri side that boasted forwards of the calibre of Marco Simone, Dejan Savicevic and Roberto Baggio.
Weah's all-round excellence also resulted in him becoming the first African to win the Ballon d'Or.
He would enjoy a more prolific campaign in 1995-96, scoring 13 goals – including his iconic coast-to-coast strike against Verona – and he claimed a second Scudetto in 1999 but his first season in Serie A was undoubtedly his most impactful.
Zico
Despite interest from AC Milan and Roma, Brazilian superstar Zico joined lowly Udinese in 1983.
Many were mystified as to how the Zebrette had managed to stump up the cash to sign the outstanding talent from the ridiculously gifted Selecao side that had graced the World Cup in Spain the previous year.
However, despite calls for the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to block the transfer, the No.10 was allowed to join Udinese, much to the joy and disbelief of their supporters.
Zico hit the ground running, netting six times in his opening four games, and had racked up nine goals by the turn of the year.
He eventually ended with 19 goals in Serie A but was beaten to the Capocannoniere award by Platini by a single strike.
Despite Zico's brilliance, and his productive partnership with Franco Causio, Udinese only finished ninth on account of their porous defence.
Zico's second season was worse, with Udinese coming home 12th, but he remains a legend in Udine, not least for turning the free-kick into an art-form.
Zinedine Zidane
Amusingly, Blackburn Rovers turned down the chance to sign Zinedine Zidane because they already had Tim Sherwood, while Newcastle didn't think that the elegant Frenchman was good enough to play in the First Division – let alone the Premier League.
That left the way clear for Juventus to sign Zidane in the summer of 1996 for just €3.6m (£3.2m/$4m) and it quickly became obvious that the Bianconeri had got themselves a bargain.
The attacking midfielder was excellent in his first season in Turin. Never a prolific player, Zidane only scored five times in total but he was the majestic creative force behind Juve's Scudetto win and was unsurprisingly named Serie A's Foreign Player of the Year.
He also netted twice in the knockout stages of the Champions League as Juve reached the final, only to suffer a shock loss to Borussia Dortmund.
Zidane was even better in his second season in Italy and he helped the Bianconeri retain the Scudetto but they again suffered heartbreak in Europe, beaten by Real Madrid in the 1998 Champions League final.
As it transpired, it would only be after joining the Spanish giants for a world-record fee in 2001 that Zidane would finally get his hands on the European Cup, in 2002.
More work to do for Ronaldo
So, in terms of goals, Ronaldo should be rightly proud of his first season in Serie A. He has outscored some illustrious names but not his Brazilian namesake.
Context is also key. Whereas the Portuguese Ronaldo has joined an utterly dominant Juventus side during a relatively poor era for Italian football, the likes of Gullit and Weah played in its golden age, when defences ruled and it was, thus, far harder for forwards to score goals.
In addition, when one considers the achievements and impact made by the likes of Platini and Maradona, it's clear that Ronaldo still has more work to do if he is to go down as the greatest overseas superstar the Italian game has ever seen.

10 Classical Musicians and Icons who lived like modern rock legends

10 Classical Musicians and Icons who lived like modern rock legends
We generally imagine famous icons of classical music to be stuffy figures whose personal lives couldn’t hold a torch to the exploits of the modern-day gods created by the rock and roll revolution.
Reading the biographies of the great luminaries in classical music will tend to convince you otherwise. In their day, many of these people evoked adoration and reverence to levels never seen before, and sank to depths just as low. Whatever their stories were, there are plenty of parallels between the great innovators of the classical era and the more recent past in music. Below are ten of the most colorful personalities among classical music icons.
10. Johann Sebastian Bach (1765-1850) rose to acclaim through coffee house gigging
Along with Mozart and Beethoven, Bach is one of the three famous classical musicians that every school kid knows for good reason: No artist has produced more pieces (i.e. “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”, “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3”,  “Air on G String”) that are instantly recognizable today. Most people know Bach was employed by a church. More specifically, he was on the payroll of Leipzig Town Hall for sacred and ceremonial occasions. “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul,” he once said.
But he really let loose at the local coffee shop known as Zimmermannsche Kaffeehaus, or CafĂ© Zimmermann. You wouldn’t think that in 1723, but they weren’t the places you see today with gentrified hipsters sporting non-prescription glasses, working on their liberal arts thesis all day. But in fact, it was way more shady: Kind of like a men-only opium den. There also happened to be violas and bassoons and harpsichords lying around in case any double woodwind players and strings wanted to get in on a jam session. He would charge admission and reap the profits with the cafe manager. He even wrote a cantata to honor his favorite coffee shop owner.
9. Jenny Lind (1820-1887) was the first international diva and went solo
Jenny Lind was a Swedish diva who was known as “Swedish Nightengale” when she sold out concerts at Europe and had Queen Victoria throwing flowers at her feet. She was brought over to America in 1850 by none other than circus magnate PT Barnum. He had never even heard her voice but gambled on her reputation and built it up even more through a series of press releases to keep the hype alive.
When her steamship arrived in New York, a large enough mob of people gathered to greet her, that the New York Tribune treated her welcoming as a public safety issue. In addition, 20,000 mobbed her hotel room on top of of 30,000 people who attended her first concert, with riots taking place in the aisles. Tickets were so in demand that Barnum sold seats to her concert via auction.
After 9 months and 93 sold-out concerts, Lind decided to take her act solo. She got paid the 2015 equivalent of $9.96 million but Barnum took home $14.2 million from the tour. Lind also grew tired of the constant publicity grabs. “I am not a horse,” she famously said, and struck out on her own. Barnum assumed she’d go back to Europe but for a while she toured the U.S. with her piano accompanist (whom she eventually married) and gave him quite a bit of competition.
8. Max Strakosch (1835-1892) was the first hustler agent
A Czech pianist with an inflated resume, Strakosch was one of the very first prominent professional operators who built a niche in New York City’s newly-formed classical scene in the mid-19th century.
Strakosch persevered through hard work and a keen eye for talent to land great acts and connect them to a public that was newly appreciative of classical music. And by that, we mean he met a prominent tenor when emigrating from Austria-Hungary to New York, and got hitched to his 12-year-old daughter Amelia. When it turned out that Amelia wasn’t as proficient a Soprano as he hoped, Strakosch figured that the genetic odds had to favor someone and went with her younger sister, Adelina Patti instead. Strakosch put Adelina Patti on a three-hundred stop concert tour over five years and retired her for puberty to artificially increase demand for when she’d make a comeback.
Like many agents today, Stakosch resorted to undercutting his talent. He registered Patti’s fee at $100 a night but paid her and her family considerably less. He was also sued for breach of contract and his stable of singers was paid so little that one of them held his assistants hostage with a knife to his throat in retaliation. In the end, Patti went off on a European tour with Max’s brother (and rival) Maurice taking over as her manager, but Max was still responsible for creating the opera scene in New York City.
7. Franz Lizst (1811-1886) evoked enough hysteria to coin a definition

Lizst evoked such hysteria that eventually gave credence to a dictionary definitions meaning “A mental derangement characterized by hallucinations or vehement passion or desire.” Russian critic Vladimir Stasov wrote “We had never heard anything like it before, never been confronted by such a passionate, demoniac genius” Women came tearing at his hair and scrabbling for cigar butts and secreting them between their heaving breasts.”
But the funny thing is that Lizstomania was a ruse. While he had an uncanny ability to improvise melodies from audience sugggestions and was given lessons by Antonio Salieri for free based on potential alone, he had been giving concerts for 20 years before the swoonings and mobbings had begun.
6.
and Gaetano Belloni (1810-1887) created the hype
In 1841, Lizst hired a publicist named Gaetano Belloni and it was in 1842 that Lizstomania really took off.
Sadly, much of the details of Belloni’s life is lost to history. He never kept a diary or wrote memoirs. But, it is known that in relationship to Lizst’s career, Belloni took the Hungarian pianist from respected  musician to superstar.
Belloni did this by sending ahead to the local press stories of the hysteria aroused by previous engagements.
It turned out that extremely good publicity simply bred extremely good publicity. By the time Liszt turned up in an elaborate carriage, the town would be hysterical in anticipation. Belloni also hired old-fashioned claqueurs to fake ecstatic applause at Liszt’s concerts.
5. Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was a hopeless romantic who descended into madness
Robert Schumann’s music was often equated to lyric poetry and he was considered the most romantic of the composers of the Romantic Era. It’s no wonder then that the German composer was so heavily motivated by romance. At the age of 17, Schumann met a young piano prodigy named Clara Wieck and was so moved that he decided to discontinue his law studies to pursue music. He eventually fell in love with her and when neither family approved, they carried on an affair for years through music. Schumann would write a song for her on sheet music and Clara would play it. Eventually the two would elope.
The other notable thing about Schumann is that he was, by all standards, pretty crazy. He suffered from a bipolar disorder that turned out to be both a blessing and a curse as he was able to compose enormous amounts of music during manic periods. At the same time, his illness manifested itself into full-blown schizophrenia as he approached his 40s, and he got fired at the age of 43 from his municipal position with Dusseldorf (though a music school is still named after him). A year later, he reported shrieking cosmic voices in his head drove him to throw himself into the Rhine in February (not the first person to do that: See entry #3).
Upon being rescued, he and Clara decided he should be placed in a sanitarium, where he lived out the last two years of his life. Interestingly enough, one of the things that kept him sane during his last few years was the project of mentoring another young prodigy, who became quite famous in his own right.
4. The music of Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) was so ahead of its time, it incited riots
Igor Stravinsky was an iconoclast who was one of the few composers to live into the age of rock and roll. As such, it’s not surprising that he picked up a few things along the way being the first to have percusion in his symphonies that appropriated what you’d hear on a drum set.
It also follows that the Russian piano player and composer was not appreciated in his time. The Firebird Ballet wove two Russian folk myths together into a modern opera that catapulted to stardom when it premiered in 1910. But his ambition got the better of him (or at least his audience) when he broke all the rules a couple operas later with “The Rite of Spring.” The ballet introduced rhythms and dissonances never before heard before and it’s been reported that the audience rioted in the concert hall.
While a BBC article has cast doubt on the extent of the riot it is historically established that the police were called and some forty people were arrested. Phil Goulding notes that the infamous 1913 concert “made Stravinsky the enfant terrible of music, the shock-you genius.” “Rite of Spring” was named by Time Magazine as the definitive work of the 20th Century in their 1999 issue.
3. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was a tortured artist of extreme proportions
Tchaikovsky was cornerstone of classical music’s romantic era and is often cited as the greatest composer and orchestrator Russia has ever produced.
But Tchaikovsky did not have an easy life. For one, he was a homosexual living in a country that has historically had an unusually strong aversion to it. Even musicologists denied his homosexuality during the Soviet era. Struggling with societal pressures to repress himself, he married a young music student named Antonina Milyukova. The marriage was a catastrophe, with Tchaikovsky abandoning his wife within weeks of the wedding. During a nervous breakdown, he unsuccessfully attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the icy waters of the River Neva naked, and eventually fled abroad.
Beyond that, Tchaikovsky had a history of nervous breakdowns and paranoia. He became so convinced that his head would roll off his body, he held his hand on his head when he was conducting. When he was being decorated by the Tsar on another occasion, he had to drug himself heavily just to get through the ceremony.
2. Niccolo Paganani (1782-1840) was a wildly successful solo artist believed to be the devil
Niccolo Paganani was an extraordinary violinist who was one of the first instrumentalists to successfully launch a multi-national concert tour. When he played during the 1832 cholera epidemic, one source said “all pain and sadness was suspended; one forgot death and the fear that is worse than death.” Snuff boxes, billiard canes and restaurants all over Europe were named after him, and newspapers reported daily on his touring progress.
However, his virtuoistic ability and sulken appearance led to rumors that he was the devil. There was even a rumor that the fourth string of his violin was made from the intestine of a dead mistress. In reality, modern historians speculate that he had a genetic abnormality. Because people hadn’t heard of genetics back then, he simply carried around a certificate from his mother proving his mortal origins but that didn’t convince the Bishop of Nice, who denied him a Christian burial on grounds of proven atheism and demonism.
1. Ludwig van Beethoven  (1770-1827) was the maddest genius of them all
It could be argued that no one has reshaped classical music more than Beethoven. “Beethoven stands at the pinnacle of development of the history of music,” one scholarly journal writes. “He absorbed the different trends of thought of the 18th Century and bought them to completion.”
But with Beethoven’s enormous talent came an enormous ego. He was known to tangle with virtually every landlord, patron and girlfriend he ever had, and his mentor Joseph Haydn found him impossible at times (though the two eventually became friends again). In his late 20s, Beethoven started losing his hearing, which catapulted him to new levels of depression and madness. In his quest to maintain his quality of work, Beethoven poured himself into his music so much that he rarely groomed himself or maintained order in his apartment. When friends and colleagues came to visit, they reported his rooms were filled with stacks of manuscripts no one was allowed to touch, he was often naked or in his underwear, and he was often unaware that anyone else was in the room.
Unlike many other classical music icons, Beethoven was lucky in that he lived in a time and place  (Vienna) in which he could make a good living and gain the esteem of his contemporaries. When Beethoven died at the age of 57, a crowd of 20,000 lined the streets of his funeral procession in  in appreciation with nine priests presiding over the service.

How It Sounds: Taylor Swift’s “Ready For It”
After taking home everything at the 2015 Grammy’s, Taylor Swift had a high standard to beat once she decided to come back. Her “first” pop album,1989, beat all sorts of records and it also won the Album of the year at the Grammy's. All of her singles were at the top of the charts and Taylor’s name was in everyone's mouth. From her squad, to the hidden messages in her lyrics, to a plethora of “ I hate that I can’t get it out of my head” songs, Taylor proved she was here to stay. We are now two weeks away from the release of Reputation, her first album since 1989, and which singles have gathered mixed reviews thus far. In this “How It Sounds” we will be breaking down  Taylor’s second single off of  Reputation, called Ready for it.
Tumblr media
In the beginning, God created.... a monster like bass-line that shook everyone when they first heard it. Godzilla stumping into a city comes to mind. Three repeated bass stumps followed by a tele-transporting like sound set the scene for a gnarlier Taylor than we have ever seen before. I may be reaching but Taylor might be trying to communicate that we are not “ready for it”, specially with the tele-transporting like sound. Furthermore, she makes it clear that she is a force to be reckon with and everyone best beware. The bubbly girl who “shake(s) it off” and sees “Sparks fly” seems to have actually died in the hands of this new Taylor.
Before she starts singing, Taylor gangsterly clears her throat, preparing as it is about to go down and get dirty. A a quick, heart-pounding like build up can be heard in the background before the beat first drops into a cymbalist track which enhances the already hard bass stumps. Soon after, a , now common for mainstream yet surprising for Taylor, trappy track chimes in. The third, in less than 30 seconds, addition to this stank face beat is a brassy, perhaps baritone horn like sound. The latter adds an anthemic, football-game feel to the Max Martin produced track.
Swift and, iconic producer, Martin slow it down for what I perceive to be the pre-chorus but suspect could be the chorus itself. They make the listener feel like they are either suspended on or descending through air. This part of the song feels more like the old Taylor, as the singer expresses ” In the middle of the night, in my dreams, you should see the things we do...”  with a breathy tone. It reminds me of Taylor essentials such Wildest Dreams, Style and Enchanted. Though lyrically Taylor leaves the context loose enough for the listener to relate, I think this is the most overtly sexual Taylor has ever been. Before starting her second rap verse or “talk-singing” ,as People.com calls it, Taylor asks if we are “Ready for it”. This is followed by the comeback of the Godzilla stumps from the beginning of the song.
Tumblr media
For the bridge, Taylor asks us one more time if we are ready for it and proceeds to sing “ baby, let the games begin”  multiple times. She then breaks it down with a hip-possessing beat change to what can be the actual pre-chorus; She voices “ I,I,I see how this is gon’ go; touch me and you’ll never be alone...no one has to know”. Taylor is woke and mischievous in this part, a side of her that is becoming the new normal. After she declares “no one has to know” for the last time, whispered echoes can be heard as the song comes to a stop. I can’t help but feel like there is an inside joke or hidden meaning here; perhaps one about her current boyfriend ,actor, Joe Alwyn. In the last 40 seconds of the song, Taylor ad-libs high notes and harmonizes atop of herself. It’s a true climax enhanced by the silence that came before it.
There are many factors, some of which I am still unaware of, that make this song a pop master piece that I keep on replay. The syncopation from the verses into the chorus highlight the lyrics as they go from rap into singer-songwriter vibes. The song as a whole can be perceived as a metaphor for what Taylor is trying to do, i.e, show us there is more than one side to her. in addition, she’s introducing us to a darker side of her while she asks us if we are “ready” to meet it. Though this might be another reach, I think she wants us to feel like we are not ready for it. She’s coming in harder than ever with less allusions and easier-to-decipher metaphors.
Here is the rather cryptic, secret message-driven music video to the song. Fun fact: it left me disappointed.

If you like the song as much as I do, you might want to read this vulture.com article which includes songs Taylor might have drawn inspiration from or just songs with a similar vibe to add to a playlist:

Here is the people.com article I mentioned above. It breaks down Taylor's  “Burton to its Taylor” lyric:
