Change Your Relationship In Six Hours
Tumblr media
Maintaining a healthy, happy relationship—of any kind—is a team effort. Every party involved has to put in time to nurture and care for the connection in order for it to last. Whether it’s a lifelong friendship or a new romantic spark, whether you’re currently looking for connections or just starting to date someone you really like, we’ve dug into research to give you some tips on building a lasting relationship.
The Gottman Institute in Seattle is devoted to the science of successful relationships. One thing they’ve discovered is that successful couples (but the ideas can work for relationships of all kinds) devote an extra six hours per week to their relationship.
Here’s how the Gottman Institute breaks down that six hours:
• Ritual of daily goodbyes: 10 minutes per week (2 minutes a day x 5 working days)
• Reunions: 1 hour and 40 minutes per week (20 minutes a day x 5 working days)
• Appreciation and Admiration: 35 minutes per week (5 minutes a day x 7 days)
• Affection: 35 minutes a week (5 minutes a day x 7 days)
• Weekly date: 2 hours once a week
• State of the union meeting: 1 hour a week
Stay tuned for our next post with suggestions for ways to spend those six hours!

6 Ways to Connect With Your Partner
Whether you’ve recently met someone new, you’re in a longtime relationship, or you’re looking for love, here are six suggestions for building a stronger connection with someone special in your life.
Tumblr media
1. Themed movie night
Select a movie you’re both excited to see in advance, and plan food and drink pairings that match with the theme of the film. Then get ready to cuddle up on the couch and enjoy.
2. Get outside
Go for a walk or a bike ride and enjoy the scenery and each other. Then break for a small picnic or an impromptu photo shoot when you stumble upon a pretty new street or mural you want to capture.
3. Create a morning/evening ritual
Set aside a few minutes each morning and evening to have face time with each other. It could be as simple as saying, “Good morning,” and “I love you” with a hug or kiss before the two of you run out the door, and then greeting one another when you arrive home at night before diving into errands and tasks. Creating a ritual offers a seamless, intentional way to show you care each day amid the hustle of daily life.
4. Try something new
Instead of always going out to dinner, mix up your date nights. Go to a comedy show or concert, play miniature golf, or sign up for something you can experience together, like a cooking class or even trapeze lesson! Get creative and take your bonding to the next level.
5. Consider the little things
Show appreciation and admiration for your partner. Bring home their favorite dessert one night, take something off their to-do list, offer a foot massage, leave love notes around the house, set aside their favorite section of the newspaper at breakfast, put on a record and share a dance together. There are endless ways to show the other person you value them in ways that are simple and lasting.
6. Have a conversation
Sometimes the long view takes a backseat to topics that require daily attention. Take time to have a conversation with one another that isn’t about work and daily stresses. Instead, check-in on an emotional level and focus on connecting in deeper, more meaningful ways.
