Hi gentle readers,
I keep meaning to come back to this blog to tidy some tags, load up the queue, and think of a post (or two) ... but I haven’t been able to. This is my last year of undergrad and I’m trying to plan what I will do after I graduate. I’m officially declaring this blog under a hiatus. I’m not abandoning this blog - I still want to talk about fairy tales, writing, and illustration and cultivate source materials for myself and hopefully others on this strange blogging website. But since I already seem to be on a break, I’m just making it official.
I may be back around October / Halloween time (we all love Halloween), or I may be back during winter break when this semester ends.

Note
For the writer ask meme: 8, 9, 18, 24
Thanks for asking! :)
8) favorite genre to write
Fantasy, mainly; urban fantasy in particular. I used to be super into high fantasy when I was in middle school, but somewhere along the way in high school and college I transitioned to mainly urban fantasy. I blame Rick Riordan and Neil Gaiman for that. I also like dabbling in horror/ghost stories, though I’m still new to that.
9) what, if anything, do you do for inspiration?
Lots of things, whatever works at the moment; listening to music is a good one. What exactly I listen to depends on what I am working on; as a result my playlist is kind of all over the place. Looking at pictures online also helps; Pinterest is a lot of fun in that regard. It just helps me get a feel for what I want to do with my story.
Probably one of the best ways to get inspired is by observing people and events around me; you can get a lot of information and ideas just by watching and listening. I’m a pretty quiet person when I’m not around friends, but I am pretty good at watching and listening. It could be something as simple as seeing people interact while I shelve books at the university library. Anything can lead to somewhere.
I’ve also found that a lot of stuff I read over time just accumulates in my brain and ideas go from there, though not without additional planning. For example, I’ve always been interested in Russian folklore, but never really wrote about it. But last year I was able to talk to a couple of immigrants from Russia and we exchanged folklore and I took lots of notes afterwards; it was very interesting getting the perspective of someone who actually came from the country and grew up hearing about Baba Yaga and Koschei the Deathless, instead of just reading books on the subject. Now I have something in the back of my head, but I don’t know what exactly it is, yet. But it’s there, waiting, growing…
18) were there any works you read that affected you so much that it influenced your writing style? what were they?
Way back when I was in middle school, I started reading A Series of Unfortunate Events and really liked the writing style there; some of my first stories show that. Later on in the same year I started reading The Chronicles of Narnia, and that influenced me a bit, too. But I think the biggest influence on my writing in the long run has been Neil Gaiman’s work. Rick Riordan was a recent influence as well, mainly in how from him I got the idea of starting a story from the second chapter and filling in the important information later on. That comes in handy a lot in short fiction.
24) have you ever become an expert on something you previously knew nothing about, in order to better a scene or a story?
Oh yeah, constantly! And it leads me to learn about some… interesting stuff. For example, due to the plot of my last finished story, I’ve learned the different ways that a teenager might hide their pregnancy from their parents.
I’ve also recently learned about Russian naming conventions, like how the gender of the person determines how their last name is formatted, and the whole thing about patronymic names. I needed to know that for a character in my story.

So OMG Night and Silence.
The secret courtyard garden, I think, is what’s most going to haunt me and need additional rereads. Like what is up with the Baba Yaga hut? WHY GROW GOBLINFRUIT?!?
Also the fact that the Dochas Sidhe are living hope chests is HILARIOUS in hindsight. ‘We can adjust your blood. And our blood. Nooooothing suspicious about this noooo.’
Also that bloody prophecy curse. Is it because they are Carters? Or is it Amandine’s fault? Are we looking at two competing curses here, because I’m going to need to draw a map to remind myself who has cursed whom at this point (in any case it all boils down to EIRA IS THE WORSSSST).

The queen admitted to her goblinfruit scheme awfully quickly. She banned Toby awfully quickly, without Toby doing much to anger her (definitely not as much as Toby’s done before). I’m starting to wonder if there’s not a bigger plan here, something that the queen is involved in

I haven’t done one of these in a while so here we go
also if you are not on here and I still follow you don’t feel bad I had to cut out a lot of people in order not to go over the link count so the links would work. So I decided to stick with blogs post mainly about stuff I’m interested and with certain aesthetics and not necessarily friend blogs because fall is like season of aesthetics

Just taking a moment to give a shoutout and a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of the brilliant artists who allowed me to include their beautiful artworks in my most recent book, The Art of Fantasy: A Visual Sourcebook Of All That Is Unreal. Without peeks into their imaginary worlds and their menagerie of fantastical creatures, this book wouldn't exist.
Thank you for your generosity, and for sharing it around on social media to all of your friends and family, fans and followers, too! The book was published only this past September so I appreciate you helping me get as many eyeballs on it as possible! By the way, if anyone is interested in purchasing a signed copy of the book as a holiday gift, there are still a few left, and I think if you order soon, you will still receive it in time! You can find a link in the comments for this.
Included in this gallery are works by the following artists and all photos in this gallery are their own.
Annie Stegg
2. Brett Manning Art
3. Carisa Swenson / Goblinfruit Studio

Changeling: the Lost - Seasons Pass #2
In the original D&D Chronicles post, I promised each update would come within two days of the session. I can start fulfilling that on the next one. This one was a week ago. Thank god this isn’t a meatspace group, or I wouldn’t remember a bit of it at this point.
Like last time, only character names and “Storyteller” or “ST” will be used for referencing people. The RPing is a little more unified, so characters talking will be italicized, and all quoted text will be unaltered aside from that, changing names, or adding periods to differentiate chat messages. There’s also some slight edits regarding the use of /me commands in Roll20′s chat. All information presented should be public knowledge of all players.
With that said, let’s get things underway.
Storyteller: A few days have passed since you fulfilled your mission. You haven't seen your prisoner but of course somehow everyone knows something about him... or at least they think they do. IT's kind of funny to hear some of the rumors that get bandied around. Tom White has kept your names quiet. It's up to you whether or not to claim credit but no one else has stepped up to do so. Nathan Bitwise: I'm not. Not a very Winter thing to do. Red Tasha: Nah, I got other stuff to worry about. Like making stuff.
After a slight rules kerfuffle regarding wound healing time (end result: Tasha has fully healed her damage from last chapter) and a scene where Nathan gets advised by Sen Taus (a Spring courier with strong Winter contacts that Nathan had met during “orientation”) to report the shaggy guy that saw them on the bus, the story for this chapter comes into play. As the current leader of the Freehold, Tom White is trying to keep activity on the down-low, but there’s time for an odd job: a wealthy Fairest that needs some special Goblin Fruit harvested.
Storyteller: Okay, so, the Fairest is Pauper Conner. Apparently during her Durance, her Keeper, as a cruel joke, decided to replace her name with her title until she "earned something more fitting". She escaped before she did so and ever since then she's found that great misfortune strikes her down if she tries to go by anything other than something that means 'poor' or 'beggar' something similar. Nathan: Ouch. Tasha: Oof Storyteller: She's part of the Winter Court, as might not surprise you, but has alliances with both the Autumn and Summer court in the hopes that they'll either find a way to get around the curse or simply kill the Keeper. Pauper Conner is a being that is only made of what is beautiful. Anything that would have made her 'poorer' was taken away from her. She looks like if the wind blew too hard, she might simply disintegrate. She has a flawless, smooth face, long silky snow white hair. Most of her is covered in a delicate dress that looks sturdier that she is. When she speaks, she glows, which causes parts of her to seemingly come back into existence. For example, her hands, which you sometimes fail to notice.
Like most Fairest, she has a bodyguard in the form of a smallish Ogre, who like most of his ilk probably doesn’t need a weapon. He doesn’t do much because antagonizing people needlessly is a really dangerous business when you’re a changeling.
Storyteller: [Pauper Conner] "So, the new Motley on the block. And the newest project of the Royals." Nathan: "I... guess so." Tasha: "Right." Storyteller: [Pauper Conner] "Oh don't be so worried. Only one of the projects were ever completely wiped out. The others simply petered out or were eventually left to their own devices as the Four looked for a new silver bullet." Nathan: "I see... I guess with just everything, it's only natural to be nervous." Storyteller: [Pauper Conner] "Yes, well, just pay particular attention to the Oaths they are crafting, I'm sure you've had experience in this already but keep in mind what each part really means. Now, shall we get down to business?" Tasha: "Yes. You were looking for a kind of Goblinfruit in the Hedge?" Storyteller: [Pauper Conner] "Four, in fact. I've got a map, as good a map as one can find for the Hedge anyway, but each fruit is protected by a trial of emotion. Whoever created the trials knows of each of our allegiances. To pluck the goblin fruit without it spoiling, you must emote opposite of your Court's choice." Tasha: "Oof. Tricky... So Summer would be serenity, Autumn would be courage, Winter would be joy... not sure what Spring would be. Apathy?" Storyteller: [Pauper Conner] "Correct." Nathan: There's a flicker of static across his body for a moment. "That... That's interesting." Tasha: "Spring will be hard. How do you keep from wanting the thing you came there for?" Storyteller: [Pauper Conner] "However, my contacts on the Autumn court believe that if two changelings of differing courts took hold of the fruit at the same time, they could do the emotion for the other, preventing the strain."
For a reward, she offers some Goblin Fruits and tokens they might find useful, with the amount being substantially less if they don’t bring back all four. She hands them the map, as well as loans them a monocle that seems to have glitter in the glass.
Storyteller: [Pauper Conner] "Flip the monocle over three times, then look through it." Tasha: "Got it." Nathan: Four is too many and five is right out. :) Storyteller: Ha Tasha: (laughs a bit at that.)
The map gives a starting point to enter the Hedge from: Benjy’s trod. The group heads there, but when they arrive at the park, there’s a minor police presence. Turns out multiple gunshots, an explosion, and a missing park ranger are a little suspicious - though it’s not big enough to be, say, about murder. So, how to get past them?
Tasha: "Hmm... You and Ben can sneak past them, but I don't think I'll be able to." Nathan: "Can't you turn your light down? I haven't figured out the 'make things darker' clause yet." Tasha: "Can you change your hair or skin color in an instant? I can't flame on or off at will. Unless I use a Contract. But it doesn't go in reverse." Nathan: "Um, I... kinda can?" Tasha: "...You know what I mean."
Ben comes to the rescue on this, suggesting Nathan shapeshift into a child so they can imitate a visiting family. He does the talking and gets them past the police with a sympathetic sob story. Once they’re clear, they find the hidden doorway, and Nathan activates the gate so they can enter the Hedge.
Tasha: Weee... Storyteller: Weee Nathan: Wii Storyteller: Heh
An owl on a perch above the wide trod cries out “Whom! Whom! Whom!” as the group arrive. Nathan, who has the higher Intelligence + Survival of the player characters, assumes control of the map.
Nathan: "Never underestimate a gamer's ability to read and navigate maps! ...(turns it sideways and squints)"
Thankfully, they reach the first bush without incident. And by “bush,” I mean a jagged pile of metal pretending to be a bush. The monocle helps to identify a particularly rusty round bit of metal as the Goblin Fruit.
A bit of trouble over miscommunication arises as Tasha’s player thought each bush was tied to a court, and the opposite emotion of that was what was needed, instead of the opposite emotion of the changeling’s own court. Even then, they hadn’t figured out the apathy issue when Tasha realizes that disgust could also work as the opposite of desire. They both take hold, Tasha thinking of her college days while Nathan remembers playing video games under his bed covers, and pull. The fruit comes off and doesn’t immediately fall to pieces. First fruit retrieved!
Storyteller: Back to the map! Tasha: "Nate? Would you kindly?" Nathan: "On it." Storyteller: (I half expected him to say "Also, never say that again.") Nathan: Imagine like a static pop then.
They get to the next location, only to find between them and the fruit (a shriveled piece of char on a branch) the Hedge turns into a tar-filled swamp. Tasha experiments poking the tar to find it alights but smothers out quickly.
Nathan Bitwise: "That's good. Last thing we want is a forest fire shouting 'idiot changelings here.'"
They wade across the tar to get the fruit. Tasha thinks of her rotation at the hospital, while Nathan sees no reason not to use the same memory twice.
Storyteller: And you have some char! And look up to see that owl from before! It's brought a friend! With a molotv! Tasha: Goddammit... Nathan: "...Run run run RUN!" Storyteller: [hobgoblin, probably] "Two sticky icky changelings! Stealing other people's stuff!" Red Tasha: "Running!" Storyteller: [hobgoblin] "Hup!"
Nathan’s high Speed gets him out even with the Speed-halving tar, and Tasha protects herself from the resulting blaze with her Contracts of the Elements. They’re both covered from toe to just above halfway up in tar, though, and Tasha’s is on very-difficult-to-put-out fire, but she’s not taking damage from it, so they press on before other more unsavory types come to see what’s going on.
Nathan fails his next navigation check and they wind up at an ocean, namely a beach beside a massive expanse of water. Tasha would like to get the tar on her not alight, but being a little genre savvy, she first tosses a rock into the glistening water... and it snaps on it like a venus flytrap.
Storyteller: Seriously, fuck Faerie Nathan: Fuck the Hedge, actually. If we were in Faeire, I'm pretty sure our Clarity would notice. Storyteller: Fuck it all
Thankfully, the sand is normal, and she manages to extinguish the fire that way. They get back on the trail and find themselves... back at the first bush. The third bush - a real bush this time - is actually just beyond it... and it’s bare.
Nathan: Is that damn owl around? Storyteller: No. But there is a throne. And on that throne is a ball of fat with four spindly limbs, a head, and on that head is a crown. And in one of the ends of the limbs is... the fruit. "Ah... pilgrims through the Land of Saint Glute! Hello there pilgrims." Nathan: A hobgoblin? "Uh, hello..." Storyteller: Yes, defintely Tasha: "Hail, Lord... how do we address you?" Storyteller: The hob speaks with a overdone pretentious English accent. "Lord Glute will do fine. I was just about to dine upon this morsel. Would you like to watch?"
Thankfully for their job, Tasha negotiates a trade: Lord Glute got his crown when he was much smaller and would like it resized to fit him. Tasha does so, lengthening it with leaves from the metal bush. Lord Glute is satisfied with the result and gives them the third fruit.
Storyteller: And you find the last one... on a pedestal. In the middle of ten feet of open ground. ... coughnotatrapcough Nathan: "...Boss arena." Tasha: "Yeah. Pretty much." Nathan: "Remember when we just had to feel things? That was OK." Tasha: "So... how're we gonna do this?" Nathan: "Maybe I can check the parameter? I think only a minute in the thorns wouldn't do much." Storyteller: BWAHAHAHAHA Tasha: "Be careful." Nathan: Given penalties are levied per hour off the path... Storyteller: yeah yeah Nathan: Plus I'm obviously keeping the clearing in sight. Storyteller: Hehe Nathan: Nathan gives Tasha a nod and sneaks around the trees surrounding the clearing. Tasha: Tasha examines the clearing from a distance to see if there's anything about it that can clue her in to what's there. Storyteller: The thorns prick him and a few drops of grey blood run down his skin, no matter how hard he tries to avoid it. And then the bottom drops out of Nathan's stomach. Behind the pedestal are Two Golden Gauntlets
It takes Nathan's player a moment to remember their relevance.
Nathan Bitwise: A million thoughts are running through my mind as I get back and try not to panic try not to panic what the fuck what the fuck [...] Nathan: Nathan pops back next to Tasha, almost running into her. "those shouldn't be there those shouldn't be there Tasha: "What? What shouldn't be there?" Nathan: "B-Behind that..." gesturing towards the pedistal. "T-Those... Those gauntlets... Th-They shouldn't even exist..." Tasha: "What gauntlets?" Nathan: "I-I... I blew up my Keeper with them." Tasha: "Wait... you blew them up?!" Nathan: "Y-Yeah... b-but it didn't kill him..."
Upon hearing that Nathan saw something behind the pedestal, Ben heads in and checks it out, only to report that there’s nothing back there. Nathan, confused, runs in blindly to see for himself, with Tasha chasing after him.
Storyteller: No sign of either gauntlet, save maybe some minor depressions in the ground, if that Nathan: Nathan Bitwise pats his hands over the ground. "T-They were right here..." Storyteller: Benjamin Bartok frowns. [Ben] "We should probably get out of the Hedge and figure out what's going on. This could be the start of an attack." Red Tasha: "We should grab the fruit first." Storyteller: Ben snags it Nathan: Nathan tries to catch his breath. "Y-Yeah..." He tries to recompose himself and get back up. "I-I hope I just imagined them..."
We ran out of time, so the Storyteller got us back safely easily enough, to turn the fruit in and get our rewards in the morning, in time for the next chapter. Hope you join me again for that.

I DIDNT BELIEVE IT EITHER!!!
But weve found strange wards. Not tremere ones. Weve checked with the swindon chantry. And weve found this thing known as goblinfruit? Smelled delicious but I aint bitin no random fucking fruit. Shit suspicious. We also found blood vitals... 2 of them were werewolf blood but the 3rd one is still unknown. The general consensus is that the prince did some deals with the... fae.. and something mustve gone wrong. The kindred all dissappeared as well as their ghouls that were in the city at the time. No bodies were found. Like some stuff on the floor as if they were dropped but nothing else. Its a fucking ghost town.
And like weve looked through police records and there was a rise in violence? Like when it happened but now. Its seemingly normal....
Hot tea tho. I dont trust that it wasnt the tremere. Ever since chris (my tremere coterie mate) got access to the chantry shes been sus. And the chantry leader of swindon is hella sus also so i dont trust it for shit. Not one bit.
Sadly my knowledge on fairies isnt more than never tell em ur name. So i aint got no clue. Im not an occult boio.
My city isnt small >:c america just has emptiness.
