Kids Play TTRPGs
There are plenty of people who started playing D&D or other TTRPGs as kids. Heck, imaginative play (which all kids engage in on some level and in some manner) is central to what TTRPGs do. Roleplaying is a critical part of developing your child self as a person!
So what's the benefit of giving kids a rule-bound system like D&D, Quest, or Kids on Bikes? Why should kids play TTRPGs and not just make-believe?
TTRPGs teach boundaries.
Some of this depends on how a particular group runs, but a healthy TTRPG group teaches kids where boundaries are and how to respect them.
This can show up in lots of ways.
letting dice determine success
working within the limitations of a class, feature, or spell description
avoiding upsetting or scary topics, as requested by a player
offering trigger warnings and safety tools
accepting when a GM says no
respecting when another player says no
Some of those things are organic to telling a story together. Some of them are brought in to keep the game fun for everyone, like safety tools. All of these examples—and more!—help kids practice boundaries one step removed from real life, where things are a bit harder.
TTRPGS provide escape.
As adults, we think of TTRPGs as escape from the crushing reality we live in. We can free ourselves from the news cycle or our social media feeds for a few hours and pretend we live in a world where our actions are world-changing (and I'm talking saving-the-world-from-evil-powers world-changing).
Kids need escape too! Not so that they're living outside of the world, but so they can practice the skills they need to live within it.
It's way easier to advocate for your PC who's scared of creepy crawlies than it is to admit your skin crawls around your buddy's pet snake.
Kids can practice all sorts of social skills in the freedom of TTRPGs because those games provide escape and distance from the world they actually inhabit. For example:
admitting fears
facing conflict
handling disagreement
learning about themselves
experimenting with consequences (from stealing a loaf of bread to going full murderhobo at times)
setting goals and making plans
Games are low stakes ways for all of us to practice tough conversations or new social skills. Why not let kids get a leg up by teaching them to role play?
TTRPGs build confidence.
Practice makes perfect, and TTRPGs are a great place to practice your sense of self (while inhabiting a character).
As kids get more confident roleplaying their PC, they learn gain confidence in who they are and speaking from that place.
This doesn't look like adults might expect though. We think of the bard suddenly offering a grand speech, or the shy loner forging bonds with the rest of the party.
Kids gaining confidence might not look like what you expect (more on that another time), but TTRPGs help clear the path for confident, empowered kids. And that's something worth making space for!

Please tell us how to get into IT without a degree! I have an interview for a small tech company this week and I’m going in as admin but as things expand I can bootstrap into a better role and I’d really appreciate knowing what skills are likely to be crucial for making that pivot.
Absolutely!! You'd be in a great position to switch to IT, since as an admin, you'd already have some familiarity with the systems and with the workplace in general. Moving between roles is easier in a smaller workplace, too.
So, this is a semi-brief guide to getting an entry-level position, for someone with zero IT experience. That position is almost always going to be help desk. You've probably heard a lot of shit about help desk, but I've always enjoyed it.
So, here we go! How to get into IT for beginners!
The most important thing on your resume will be
✨~🌟Certifications!!🌟~✨
Studying for certs can teach you a lot, especially if you're entirely new to the field. But they're also really important for getting interviews. Lots of jobs will require a cert or degree, and even if you have 5 years of experience doing exactly what the job description is, without one of those the ATS will shunt your resume into a black hole and neither HR or the IT manager will see it.
First, I recommend getting the CompTIA A+. This will teach you the basics of how the parts of a computer work together - hardware, software, how networking works, how operating systems work, troubleshooting skills, etc. If you don't have a specific area of IT you're interested in, this is REQUIRED. Even if you do, I suggest you get this cert just to get your foot in the door.
I recommend the CompTIA certs in general. They'll give you a good baseline and look good on your resume. I only got the A+ and the Network+, so can't speak for the other exams, but they weren't too tough.
If you're more into development or cybersecurity, check out these roadmaps. You'll still benefit from working help desk while pursuing one of those career paths.

I was hired for my first ever IT role on the strength of my interview. I definitely wasn't the only candidate with an A+, but I was the only one who knew how to handle customers (aka end-users). Which is, basically, be polite, make the end-user feel listened to, and don't make them feel stupid. It is ASTOUNDING how many IT people can't do that. I've worked with so many IT people who couldn't hide their scorn or impatience when dealing with non-tech-savvy coworkers.
Please note that you don't need to be a social butterfly or even that socially adept. I'm autistic and learned all my social skills by rote (I literally have flowcharts for social interactions), and I was still exceptional by IT standards.
Third thing, which is more for you than for your resume (although it helps):
🎇Do your own projects🎇
This is both the most and least important thing you can do for your IT career. Least important because this will have the smallest impact on your resume. Most important because this will help you learn (and figure out if IT is actually what you want to do).
The certs and interview might get you a job, but when it comes to doing your job well, hands-on experience is absolutely essential. Here are a few ideas for the complete beginner. Resources linked at the bottom.
Start using the command line. This is called Terminal on Mac and Linux. Use it for things as simple as navigating through file directories, opening apps, testing your connection, that kind of thing. The goal is to get used to using the command line, because you will use it professionally.
Build your own PC. This may sound really intimidating, but I swear it's easy! This is going to be cheaper than buying a prebuilt tower or gaming PC, and you'll learn a ton in the bargain.
Repair old PCs. If you don't want to or can't afford to build your own PC, look for cheap computers on Craiglist, secondhand stores, or elsewhere. I know a lot of universities will sell old technology for cheap. Try to buy a few and make a functioning computer out of parts, or just get one so you can feel comfortable working in the guts of a PC.
Learn Powershell or shell scripting. If you're comfortable with the command line already or just want to jump in the deep end, use scripts to automate tasks on your PC. I found this harder to do for myself than for work, because I mostly use my computer for web browsing. However, there are tons of projects out there for you to try!
Play around with a Raspberry Pi. These are mini-computers ranging from $15-$150+ and are great to experiment with. I've made a media server and a Pi hole (network-wide ad blocking) which were both fun and not too tough. If you're into torrenting, try making a seedbox!
Install Linux on your primary computer. I know, I know - I'm one of those people. But seriously, nothing will teach you more quickly than having to compile drivers through the command line so your Bluetooth headphones will work. Warning: this gets really annoying if you just want your computer to work. Dual-booting is advised.
If this sounds intimidating, that's totally normal. It is intimidating! You're going to have to do a ton of troubleshooting and things will almost never work properly on your first few projects. That is part of the fun!

Tips
DO NOT work at an MSP. That stands for Managed Service Provider, and it's basically an IT department which companies contract to provide tech services. I recommend staying away from them. It's way better to work in an IT department where the end users are your coworkers, not your customers.
DO NOT trust remote entry-level IT jobs. At entry level, part of your job is schlepping around hardware and fixing PCs. A fully-remote position will almost definitely be a call center.
DO write a cover letter. YMMV on this, but every employer I've had has mentioned my cover letter as a reason to hire me.
DO ask your employer to pay for your certs. This applies only to people who either plan to move into IT in the same company, or are already in IT but want more certs.
DO NOT work anywhere without at least one woman in the department. My litmus test is two women, actually, but YMMV. If there is no woman in the department in 2024, and the department is more than 5 people, there is a reason why no women work there.
DO have patience with yourself and keep an open mind! Maybe this is just me, but if I can't do something right the first time, or if I don't love it right away, I get very discouraged. Remember that making mistakes is part of the process, and that IT is a huge field which ranges from UX design to hardware repair. There are tons of directions to go once you've got a little experience!

Pickle Cheesecake (PC for short) is Androgyne, using He/She/Xey/Zem. She also uses any science-related neopronouns that anyone thinks of to use for her.
PC is a mad scientist who creates various kinds of inventions similar to uwo_labs or Doctor Doofenshmirtz. Though life improvement is a goal he has in mind- being able to unlock the inner magical abilities that he thinks he has is the top priority (he doesn't have any, unfortunately).
Raised in a cult without a father figure, PC was very attached to xeir mother. Xey were a bastard child, with the other parent being from someone outside the cult landing xem and xeir mother in hot water. Not only that, but the cult despised PC even MORE considering xey didn't inherit any magical abilities.
Xey were continuously pushed into trying to cast spells or do anything that's worthy of a continued life. Unfortunately, no magic was ever found in PC's dough, and as punishment to both the child and mother the cult decided to crumble the mother with PC watching before kicking PC out onto the streets at a young age.
PC eventually found an abandoned building to make her home in, in a thick forest not too far from the borders of Parfaedia. The skills that she learned in trying to fix up the place led to an interest in tinkering. :] And since she was never really taught about what you should and shouldn't do, should and shouldn't make... That led to some wild things being created!!
And due to throwing caution into the wind, PC will handle things that a person normally wouldn't go near. One of those things being radioactive material!! PC has a pet rock that powers the building that's just a chunk of Uranium. If you were to put a Geiger counter next to PC, it would have an incredibly high tick rate. She is radioactive <3
PC is friends with Nemesia, an OC belonging to @vnillatree!! PC gets into shenanigans and Nemesia usually has to look on in worry and horror.
This radioactive miscreant has a HUUUUGE crush on Butter Roll it's not even funny. PC is already a mess when it comes to interacting with others, but when it comes to Butter Roll??? He absolutely loses his mind trying to be cool and endearing. Butter Roll is unaware of this crushing and just thinks that's how PC is.
PC calls his creations his "inators". This started as a joke but that's just how he is now. The things that he makes are... interesting, to say the least.
She has tension with Almond since she doesn't have any licenses or permits for anything that she does. She doesn't even have an ID or anything since she was never really taught anything about the legal system or... most things, really.
The reason why PC has slit pupils is unknown, but it might have something to do with his radioactivity! The same reasoning can be applied to why he has fangs.
PC has a stutter and tends to ramble with his words!! The more worked up he is, the worse the stuttering and rambling is.
Her hair is incredibly greasy... It would take an intense deep cleanse to clean her up properly. It's very hard for her to take care of herself due to wanting to make progress on her inventions for the sake of unlocking her missing magic abilities.
More of a design quirk rather than anything related to PC zemself, zeir goggles are expressive! When zey're wearing them, they can express themselves like normal eyes do, with the spirals acting as strange pupils.

A lot of it can! I built a stupidly overpowered computer given that the game I played the most in the first month or two was Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri from 1999. Windows 11 actually does better with SMAC than Windows 10 did, it's only crashed once! I can also run Creative Suite CS2 which I OWN on this system. Photoshop from 2004 doesn't quite know what to do with multithreading but it's actually still really fast and the 64 gigs of RAM doesn't hurt. At the moment I have NMS running in the background while I have a gadzillion firefox tabs open and I could easily watch a video like this and be fine. One of the upsides of holding on to old software is that where it can take advantage of the new hardware, it really does run very well and you get actually uplift. The issue is that a lot of people lost the thread of Intel's naming scheme and haven't upgraded their computer or they bought something with stupidly little RAM (16g is probably okay but 32 g is what most gamers will be happier with and I bought a little word processing toaster of a netbook in 2020-ish or 2021 which had FOUR gigs of RAM but there was a huge tech shortage at the time and it can do what i needed it to do (run Scrivener) just fine. It cannot handle a lot of tabs open and still do, you know, the operating system. 8 gigs is Sluggish because of Windows bloat.
And yes, I have a fervent desire for two things in programming:
That programmers optimize their programs to run on a wide variety of systems with reasonable speeds
That programmers enable their programs to use things like multithreading and large amounts of available RAM *if there is excess capacity readily available* to speed necessary functions that take significant time. Like, oh, loading screens and transitions shouldn't take much time at all on my system but the cpu is sitting there at like 4% utilization while the framerate drops to 30fps on a LOADING screen because they just had to animate a gadzillion star systems through the gpu alone (looking at you NMS.)
What I mean by that is that, for example, in the gaming sector, there are a lot of companies who are like "How much eye candy can we stuff in here to meet our arbitrary (stupidly low) framerate goal" and most of the "eye candy" is stuff most observers wouldn't know or recognize from a hole in the ground. Yes, I'm talking about Starfield. I didn't understand why they'd accept a framerate of 30fps on console until I discovered they'd artificially locked both Skyrim and Fallout 4 ON THE PC to like 30 or 40 fps. And then tied the physics to framerate, completely unnecessarily (as in you can change this behavior with like two or three ini edits.) Then there's games like Baldur's Gate which was done thoughtfully and can run on a huge range of hardware. I had to return one Civilization game because they hadn't accounted for an aging fanbase and high resolution monitors and I flat out couldn't read the tiny text to play the game.
But yeah, we have this neverending leapfrogging bloat that goes on, where users try to upgrade to get things to work better and companies decide to fill in the new overhead with data mining background tasks and "user experience optimizations" that are a ridiculous rat race that in no way enhances the user experience.
Anyway, I'm not opposed to upgrades but like, do them sensibly and if you can, learn to build your own stuff so that you aren't beholden to the anticonsumer tactics most major computer system integrators (dell, etc.) use to get as much of your money as possible while giving you the least in exchange.
we should globally ban the introduction of more powerful computer hardware for 10-20 years, not as an AI safety thing (though we could frame it as that), but to force programmers to optimize their shit better

Building on past policies and lessons learned from recent international competitions, the NSP is crafted to address multiple dimensions of sports development, including the strengthening of governance and institutional frameworks; talent identification and development of systems; enhancing sports infrastructure and ensuring equitable access to all aspiring athletes; creation of athlete-centric support systems; promoting social development and inclusion through sports; encouraging public-private partnerships and revamping funding mechanisms; administrative reform; and embedding physical literacy into the education system. Structured around the five key pillars — (i) Nation’s Excellence on the Global Stage (ii) Sports for Economic Development (iii) Sports for Social Development (iv) Sports: A People’s Movement (v) Alignment between the NSP and the National Educational Policy, 2020 (NEP) — the draft policy presents a forward-thinking and comprehensive vision for transforming the sporting landscape. While the NSP establishes a robust preliminary framework and offers a structured, inclusive and ambitious roadmap to leverage sports as a medium to build the nation, the initiatives under each pillar may require additional focus and targeted suggestions to fully realise its transformative potential. By doing so, the NSP advocates for integrating sports into the core of educational institutions, with the aim of cultivating physically, mentally, and socially empowered citizens. The alignment of these policies signals India’s recognition of the role sports can play in shaping a balanced, skilled, and health-conscious society. The NSP calls for the formulation of a framework for active engagement of sports groups and circles in educational institutions by establishing partnerships with local sports organisations and creating structured programmes that encourage participation and talent development within the educational settings. While a novel idea, the NSP should make daily physical education classes, including team-based sports, a mandatory, graded part of the curriculum across primary, secondary, and higher education levels, as emphasised in the NEP’s multidisciplinary approach. This will ensure development of collaboration, self-discipline and cognitive skills amongst the students, while fostering lifelong healthy habits. Further, there must be creation of modules that blend sports with other subjects (eg. physics in sports, sports history and sports physiology), encouraging students to explore sports through a multidisciplinary lens. For example, using disciplines like cricket or athletics to teach the physics of motion can make these scientific concepts more tangible and interesting, leading to engaging and practical learning experiences. Building Infrastructure and Community Engagement The NSP promotes the establishment of partnerships and active engagement with local sports organisations. One of the ways this can be achieved is by drawing a nexus between educational institutions and local sports education centres to create structured and comprehensive programmes that promote widespread student involvement and participation and talent development. Development of sports facilities in schools
and universities should also be undertaken to serve surrounding communities, ensuring that high quality infrastructure benefits both students and community members. This will lead to increased student engagement and talent identification. Yeah, nobody in this thread has quite gotten to the actual problem I feel here as a GM:
First of all, if it feels like the players are making you do all the bookkeeping then I have a phrase I want you to learn whenever a player triggers a power:
"Oh yeah, you do have that. Remind me how that works again?"
That's genuinely all it takes I find.
I mean, what are they going to say, "No, I'm not checking the rulebook, you do it?"
I'm not memorizing all of the PCs powers before the game starts, I'm up front about that. And if a PC forgets they have a certain power...
Kind of so what?
This is my bigger issue with this whole long thread, which is that RPGs don't have a set opposition so system mastery kind of doesn't matter.
Like, I don't know much about chess, anybody who has studied it will spank me.
But take that excellent chess player and play a game where I have the full compliment of pieces and he has nothing but two pawns and a king, and suddenly my chances of getting checkmate are a lot higher.
Maybe a level 3 party that has read through all the rules and optimized their powers would already be taking down the lich Lord and building a kingdom but this party doesn't know the rules that well and struggle with five Orcs.
So? You, as the GM, are the one deciding whether or not the party is fighting the Lich Lord or Bob the Orc and his three friends.
The *actual* problem for the GM, in my opinion, is that the more variation there is in character effectiveness, the more difficult it is to calibrate encounters to the difficulty that you expect them to have, and the more variation there might be *between players*.
If one first level character, who chose the right class and really optimized can demolish a whole enemy party, and another, who just chose the first thing that looked cool and didn't put a lot of thought into it struggles with one enemy, you're going to have a certain level of dissatisfaction from the latter player and it is going to be difficult to think about what kind of challenges the party as a whole can and cannot easily conquer.
Some games have very narrow bands of character competence and some have extremely wide bands; games in the latter category can be really hard to GM, especially if you're dealing with players who have very different goals about how much effort they want to put into character optimization.
I think an important part of the "D&D is easy to learn" argument is that a lot of those people don't actually know how to play D&D. They know they need to roll a d20 and add some numbers and sometimes they need to roll another type of die for damage. A part of it is the culture of basically fucking around and letting the GM sort it out. Players don't actually feel the need to learn the rules.
Now I don't think the above actually counts as knowing the rules. D&D is a relatively crunchy game that actually rewards system mastery and actually learning how to play D&D well, as in to make mechanically informed tactical decisions and utilizing the mechanics to your advantage, is actually a skill that needs to be learned and cultivated. None of that is to say that you need to be a perfectly tuned CharOp machine to know how to play D&D. But to actually start to make the sorts of decisions D&D as a game rewards you kind of need to know the rules.
And like, a lot of people don't seem to know the rules. They know how to play D&D in the most abstract sense of knowing that they need to say things and sometimes the person scowling at them from behind the screen will ask them to roll a die. But that's hardly engaging with the mechanics of the game, like the actual game part.
And to paraphrase @prokopetz this also contributes to the impression that other games are hard to learn: because a lot of other games don't have the same culture of play of D&D so like instead of letting new players coast by with a shallow understanding of the rules and letting the GM do all the work, they ask players to start making mechanically informed decisions right away. Sure, it can suck for onboarding, but learning from your mistakes can often be a great way to learn.

They Plugged GPT-4 Into Minecraft—and Unearthed New Potential for AI
The technology that underpins ChatGPT has the potential to do much more than just talk. Linxi “Jim” Fan, an AI researcher at the chipmaker Nvidia, worked with some colleagues to devise a way to set the powerful language model GPT-4—the “brains” behind ChatGPT and a growing number of other apps and services—loose inside the blocky video game Minecraft.
The Nvidia team, which included Anima Anandkumar, the company’s director of machine learning and a professor at Caltech, created a Minecraft bot called Voyager that uses GPT-4 to solve problems inside the game. The language model generates objectives that help the agent explore the game, and code that improves the bot’s skill at the game over time. 
Voyager doesn’t play the game like a person, but it can read the state of the game directly, via an API. It might see a fishing rod in its inventory and a river nearby, for instance, and use GPT-4 to suggest the goal of doing some fishing to gain experience. It will then use this goal to have GPT-4 generate the code needed to have the character achieve it.

The most novel part of the project is the code that GPT-4 generates to add behaviors to Voyager. If the code initially suggested doesn’t run perfectly, Voyager will try to refine it using error messages, feedback from the game, and a description of the code generated by GPT-4. 
Over time, Voyager builds a library of code in order to learn to make increasingly complex things and explore more of the game. A chart created by the researchers shows how capable it is compared to other Minecraft agents. Voyager obtains more than three times as many items; explores more than twice as far; and builds tools 15 times more quickly than other AI agents. Fan says the approach may be improved in the future with the addition of a way for the system to incorporate visual information from the game.
While chatbots like ChatGPT have wowed the world with their eloquence and apparent knowledge—even if they often make things up—Voyager shows the huge potential for language models to perform helpful actions on computers. Using language models in this way could perhaps automate many routine office tasks, potentially one of the technology’s biggest economic impacts.

The process that Voyager uses with GPT-4 to figure out how to do things in Minecraft might be adapted for a software assistant that works out how to automate tasks via the operating system on a PC or phone. OpenAI, the startup that created ChatGPT, has added “plugins” to the bot that allow it to interact with online services such as grocery delivery app Instacart. Microsoft, which owns Minecraft, is also training AI programs to play it, and the company recently announced Windows 11 Copilot, an operating system feature that will use machine learning and APIs to automate certain tasks. It may be a good idea to experiment with this kind of technology inside a game like Minecraft, where flawed code can do relatively little harm.
Video games have long been a test bed for AI algorithms, of course. AlphaGo, the machine learning program that mastered the extremely subtle board game Go back in 2016, cut its teeth by playing simple Atari video games. AlphaGo used a technique called reinforcement learning, which trains an algorithm to play a game by giving it positive and negative feedback, for example from the score inside a game. 
It is more difficult for this method to guide an agent in an open-ended game such as Minecraft, where there is no score or set of objectives and where a player’s actions may not pay off until much later. Whether or not you believe we should be preparing to contain the existential threat from AI right now, Minecraft seems like an excellent playground for the technology.

FreeDOS is a free and open-source operating system that has been around for over 20 years, designed to mimic MS-DOS and run DOS applications. It’s a fantastic project, but I want to try my own take: Cobalt.
Cobalt is a lightweight operating system I’m working on, based on FreeDOS. To use Linux terminology, it’s a ‘distribution’ of FreeDOS — the kernel, command line, applications, and drivers all come from the FreeDOS project (or at the very least, FreeDOS mirrors). Since it’s so close to FreeDOS, it also runs DOS games and applications (like DOOM, Microsoft Word 5.5, and Oregon Trail Deluxe).
The main difference right now is that FreeDOS has many different versions, some of which allow people to choose which packages they want during installation, while Cobalt has one single version with a fixed set of packages. My initial goal is to include the base drivers and utilities that covers the common bases, as well as a more friendly setup and interface. The current Cobalt package includes FreeDOS Kernel Build 2040 (the same included in FreeDOS 1.1), FreeCom 0.85a for the command line, Jemm for memory management, CuteMouse for mouse support, UDVD2 for CD/DVD drive support, and other basic drivers and utilities. It also boots into DOS Navigator at startup, which gives you a text-mode graphical interface for viewing files, but I might replace that with another shell in the future.
Most of my work on Cobalt so far has been creating the build infrastructure. Cobalt installation images are generated by a bash script, which pulls the latest-available packages from the FreeDOS project and creates a CD image ready for a VM or real PC. Since the script doesn’t require any interaction and can run on any Linux host, I’m using GitHub Actions to generate “nightly” releases automatically each week. Nightly builds can be used to test the latest FreeDOS packages and Cobalt changes before a full release is ready — something FreeDOS doesn’t currently offer.
Cobalt is still far from being ready for most people to use, though. The installer can’t boot from USB or handle multiple fixed drives yet, and there’s no option yet to install Cobalt on a drive while keeping files/folders. There are also a few more drivers and utilities that would be nice to have, which still need to be tested.
There are also a few features I hope to add soon. Making Cobalt available with multiple options for the DOS kernel (FreeDOS, MS-DOS, DR-DOS, etc.) would be helpful for some situations, like how Ubuntu Linux is available in multiple “flavors” that have different desktop environments. I also want to add built-in configurations for networking in VirtualBox and other popular VMs, which would allow file transfers and basic web browsing.
If the name Cobalt sounds familiar, it’s because it’s actually a reboot of an earlier project with the same name and similar goals. Three releases were made in 2016, then I stopped working on it and developer Ercan Ersoy took over the project. The original Cobalt was a jumbled up mess of proprietary and open-source code, which is why the new Cobalt is almost entirely a clean slate.
