MY APARTMENT LOOKS FABULOUS!!!! 🥳🥹🥰 The family just left and I am officially, now, by myself. Oh my gosh, have I been longing for this experience. I went with an earthy tone vibe palette (greens, browns, etc. and some plants). So pretty.
Don’t you love when online people inspire you though?? That’s so sweet of you to say, I’m so happy to know that! Honestly, Poppy, I feel that 2025 will be a great year for us too. We said that about 2024 and, overall, it was despite the lows we hit, but we still bounced back and now look at where we are. 🩷 Lmaoooo yes, now we just need a new job! As always, thank you for everything!
once again, PARDON MY DELAY, finding time to be online is extremely difficult for me these days (i hate december). i'm so behind with everything really 😂
this is so exciting, omg! i wish i could see it! see, the best thing about living alone is that you can decorate your place however the hell you want (for example you can put posters of your favourite bands on the walls at the age of 28 because it's completely normal and healthy and also i will never grow up). anyway, i'm sure your apartment looks lovely! 🥹
and yes, i agree with you! 2024 wasn't so bad after all. i feel like we've learned a lot this year and now we can have a fresh start in 2025. my goal for next year is definitely finding a new job (i can't work in a store anymore i just can't) and, well, to have as much fun as i can!
...and always at yor service (and also thank YOU! for constantly inspiring me to be better!).

Hello
Hello November!!!
I am walking into this month with this sense of Excitement and I am a little afraid to say that, because I haven’t felt this way in some time about entering a month this year or even last year that I can remember.
There is also this sense of nostalgia that I am feeling that is giving me the feeling of excitement.
November has been an interesting month over the years. This year I am determined to find my joy, my light, my happiness back that has been lacking over the years.
I am focused on getting into the secret place and communioning with God and expressing my Gratitude and Gratefulness to him, as well as my Thankfulness to him for all he has done for me over the year and years.
I am focusing on my goals and aspirations for 2025, I want to walk into the year with clarity and directions versus seeking it at at the beginning of the year going in already ready to hit the year ending my hibernation season and get to the work (this doesn’t mean I am not working in the hibernation season just behind the walls of the inner place). I am focused on getting my health and body together. I have a big goal for myself of what I want to see in my outer self come my birthday in February. I am focusing on setting myself up internally and externally for what's to come in 2025. On the Hebrew calendar which is the calendar the bible goes based on we are already in the new year which is why I am in such a place spiritually for forward movement. Now in this forward movement in this new year that we have been in for a month now, I have been faced with opposition. And boy oh boy the enemy don’t want to play nice which shows me I have to stay in my prayer bag because ain’t nobody got time for that.
One thing that God has been doing lately and over the course of this year is bringing things to the surface that plays into some of the issues I am noticing that can block and hinder me from some places in my life. Places I see oh wow girl you need healing there and we need to work on this and that and etc. and at times i am like wow I didn’t know that was there or that affected me in that way. When he is preparing you for something such as a major shift in life he leaves nothing unturned that may negatively affect what he is bringing you to. That’s what's so awesome about God is how he prepares you for the assignment, for the blessing, for the new that you are heading into. No detail is too small for him.
One thing I am getting back to is being present in the now, while yet hoping and daydreaming to the positive for the future but not staying there and making an idol of the future. Enjoying life where it is presently.
Monday - 11/4/24
Sitting at work and I am done with my morning things for work and I have a lot on my mind that I want to share
1st 10/17/24 made 2 yrs for me being here at my current job and this is not what I envisioned. You couldn’t have told me I would be here for 2yrs like WTF. Anyhow I knew from when I started I was on assignment, my prayer now is okay God when is this assignment up.
So needless to say I am on the hunt for a new job . Once I have secured the new job I will tell you all about where I currently work and the pros and cons of it.
Figuring out what I want to do next is the hardest for me. I am no longer a city girl so I am torn about what is next career wise. In my dream I would love to plan and design small intimate events and celebrations full time while doing some farming and gardening. I want to work in a small town. The only thing about where I live is I live in the south and in the rural area of the south you still have heavy racism and I am well aware of that being from the south so that makes me apprehensive. But nevertheless I won’t allow fear to hold me back. I am more so in a place of okay in this area God what are we doing next? That’s my prayer as I close the year out because I need change before I enter this new year.
Tuesday Nov 5, 2024
9:08am
Happy Tuesday! Sitting at work (of course) and I am done with my assignments for the morning and just waiting on my first break so that I can go get me a cinnamon roll from the gas station.
But since sitting here I began to search for the next just seeing what is catching my eye, as well as looking in a new direction. Wow typing that out the words sounded in my head and it’s pivotal for me. That is what I have been doing looking at things in the wrong direction. WOW clarity!!!!
Only the Holy Spirit can do that.
And that didn’t even hit me while searching for what I am in search for or even looking at the location but when i spoke as to what i was doing it hit me then. Funny how when you just begin to do, God will show up and confirm if you are correct in your actions.
This morning has been a good morning despite the gloomy weather. I just hate that I didn't make my breakfast and coffee before leaving for work.
I am on this process and discipline to get back to getting to work on time, meaning waking up earlier than I have been. I can't petition God for something new and etc and I am not stewarding what he has entrusted to me well.
So yea I plan to wake up earlier each week so when December comes it’s a habit and not a push.
But back to today, I woke up in a good place today, my clothes for today fit me and I am happy with how I look today. I can’t wait for lunch to get my Subway. I love sandwiches.
Let’s see what else is on my mind, OH I am thinking about not doing Youtube, or using it for the hosting of my videos, but I am not sure if I really want to vlog like that and have to edit. However I do want to capture my life via video and share it with my writing. I want you to be able to read and see my life. One thing I do know for sure is that one of my assignments is to share my life so that the light of God shines and is an inspiration to others of life with Christ. And I must do this in my authenticity and true realness.  This writing and sharing is one of the ways he has given me to share, as well as capturing photos and videos in moments, rather it be what catches the eye, a song, what i am doing, eating, interested in, life's highs and lows, the beauty and the not so cute. All of it speaks to God’s Love, Grace, Mercy in my life, my life being a laying down and surrender will to him.
So yea…. Here we are, day 7 into hibernation season for me and today is a pivotal day for me. MAN GOD IS AWESOME!!!!!!
Oh wait, let me tell y’all about last night with LCCN and this new study we are doing for the month of NOVEMBER. We are studying “Mother & Daughter Wounds”, from Dr. Anita at Woman Evolve this year. And last night was the first night and we started with learning about where mother wounds began, what we all need “Connection- Value-Love”, and then the types of mother wounds beginning with 1. Personality (which she gave a whole breakdown to that), then 2.
But to think yesterday was Monday for me and i just wanted to lay in bed and watch vlogs, but God was like nope you are logging on and i am so glad that i did also! He knew I needed to be in the room. Such a good, good Father.
So lunch was a FAIL… from subway to zaxbys… I just need to bring my own lunch. For some reason, I want some chick fil a, a milkshake, and ride around and enjoy the fall scenery
I am ready to cook dinner. I am making cheeseburgers, fries and a martini lol.
Checking back in to close out this entry. It is now Thursday 11/7/24, I am here at work.
The day is off to a great start. I have had some awesome times with the Holy Spirit.
I made those burgers and fries on Tuesday. And both were amazing, I had wine instead of the Martini. Wednesday I decided I need a mental breather day and so I called into work out. I knew I had time to cover the day and I just needed to breathe mid-week which is sometimes necessary to you giving your best. And yesterday was amazing in so many ways. God does not fail at all.
And I know yesterday there were a lot of emotions, confusion, misunderstanding, let downs and so many other feelings etc, and everyone is entitled to feel how they feel. I pray that God brought comfort to all that had many emotions and feelings with the news and results yesterday.
I have an exciting weekend ahead and I HAVE MONDAY OFF 🙌🏾, so I am looking forward to all my weekend activities from Friday to Sunday and BIG Chilling on Monday!
Okay I pray that everyone has a wonderful rest of the week and until the next time. If you made it this far reading WOW You are amazing and I love you dearly! 😘🥰
Remember always: 1 Chronicles 16:34: "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever

ABOUT POST !!
Tumblr media
Name: Masuyo Itami Wolfgang Alias: The Raven Age: 25 Occupation: Accountant/Assistant to Tsunami Defense Systems & the new CEO of Wolfgang Arms Manufacturing (WAM) Class: Solo
HISTORY:
There is no extraordinary way Masuyo Itami’s life started, born in the year 2025. The youngest one of the Itami family, the eldest being her brother; Jiro Itami. Her mother and father, Misaki and Koji Itami were one of the few who refused to leave Old Japantown after the Fourth Corporate War, much too stubborn to abandon their home. They tried their best to raise Jiro and Masuyo in normalcy, even with the abundance of gangs that cause all kinds of disturbances. Masuyo and Jiro would wake early in the mornings to go to school, to avoid any confrontation from those who may cause them trouble. Jiro would tell Masuyo to not say where they lived to anyone, in fear that people would look down on them as potential gangers, they were not street rats and Jiro refused to let anyone even think of them as such. In a way, it is what drove Jiro to strive for success and wealth.
Masuyo wasn’t as exceptional as her brother, but her grades weren’t anything to sneeze at. Both were excellent students, one aiming for the skies, and the other was aiming to do her best, Jiro even tutoring her after school so that she’d excel more. Jiro had a clear goal in mind, to escape the cesspit of Japantown and make it in the real world, to live comfortably away from hardship and gunshots. Masuyo? Not the faintest idea. She had everything she needed, a roof over her head, a loving family, she didn’t have a goal in mind, no greater want like her brother did. For now, she was just a kid. No need to grow up too fast.
Years move forward, Jiro and Masuyo continue to excel in school, both eventually landing themselves in Night City University before graduating. Jiro wasted no time in applying to corporate companies, encouraging Masuyo to do the same, there was no way that they would deny her with her education. Jiro landed a job in Arasaka, while Masuyo landed a job as an accountant and assistant at Tsunami Defense Systems.
As soon as the both of them were wealthy enough, they moved out of Japantown and into their own places. This is where Jiro decides to part ways with his sister, he can’t hold her hand or help her anymore. She was an adult and needed to find her own way in the world, and he needed to focus on his success, he wouldn’t get in the way of hers.
Although, it doesn’t take long before Masuyo realizes that she isn’t exactly rolling in success. Respect was hard to acquire, especially when you’re an assistant. People rely on her, but not because of her abilities, but because she has to oblige. It’s her job to. Along with her job in accounting; work can get busy, sometimes she isn’t home until late.
Masuyo’s home is located in The Glen, Heywood. A rather comfy condo provided by her company, but nothing too luxurious, although she can hardly complain about it given that she doesn’t have to pay a dime to live there. Though she still has to keep her money in mind if she wants to eat good food and avoid kibble. The loneliness tended to get to Masuyo at times, she wasn’t the most socially popular at work, even if she did get invited to work outings, no one had the desire to get to know her better, or even at all. It was so bad that she would try and befriend strangers at bars, which, of course, never worked. She had to get used to it, living alone, doing things herself, all adults do.
Life isn’t exciting, she tends to avoid conflict when it arises, work is stressful and exhausting, home is quiet and lonely. Is this what she studied for? Got good grades for? It all feels like an endless cycle, only ever mildly lively when she decides to go out drinking to de-stress, but even then… It was quite depressing.
Some online scrolling would change things up a bit, eventually. VTubing had always been a popular streaming outlet, after watching a few clips and highlight videos; Masuyo was enamored. So much engagement and community… Not to mention, Japanese speaking Vtubers were extremely popular. One day, she sets aside enough money to buy a VERY beautiful model, stream assets, and begins her side-gig as “Shikabane, the Cyber Ninja” Vtuber. Engagement is plentiful, people seem to enjoy her persona and even bits of her real self, it even acted as a source of secondary income. Suddenly, she didn’t feel so lonely anymore, with an uprising audience to speak to when she got online; everyone listened. Though, new becomes old eventually. These are folks behind screens, after all.
Masuyo is content with how things are, she is more well off than most who live in Night City, among the few who live comfortably and safely without worry, she can eat good food and sleep soundly. It’s better than nothing.
This quiet life is soon to be disrupted in a most interesting manner, some excitement is sure to throw off the monotony that is her daily routine. Her hidden skills found and utilized.
The Werewolf will soon find its Raven.
CURRENT:
Masuyo currently hops between two jobs, her regular day job as an accountant, and her job working for Miles Wolfgang, helping him build up his weapons manufacturing company. At the moment, she acts as accounting director, the typist, and his bodyguard, although it's clear that Wolfgang tends to forget that he has help now and rarely asks her to carry out assistant work, usually leaving her to just be his protector.
For someone who is incapable of dreaming for herself, Wolfgang offers to share his dream with her, to reach the top, for this company to succeed. And she gratefully accepts.
Although, Masuyo keeps her second life a secret, leaving friends like Darren and Anne in the dark and kept at a distance, though she wants them to know her more; she's afraid of her two lives merging together, both because she's worried about how she'll be viewed and she doesn't want to get fired from her corporate job.
With Wolfgang living in her corporate conapt, her becoming more confident with his help, and finally feeling seen for the first time in her life; Masuyo finds herself enjoying life.
Things aren't so lonely anymore.
---
The crew had been betrayed by their netrunner, Data, who was already far gone in his cyberpsychosis, trapping them and activating a shard in Wolfgang's head called "Soul Killer", which downloaded his consciousness digitally onto a shard.
And Masuyo had to watch it all happen.
Dying in her arms; begging and pleading him not to leave her alone, that she couldn't dream without him, that she couldn't fly without him, Wolfgang gives her the shard they had collected from Tex Miller, the man they were assigned to kill and collect his brain data, and departs with his final words.
"I will always be the wind beneath your wings..."
With little time to spare; they exit the mansion they had broken into, retreating to their getaway car with their job done and one boss dead, they take some moments to mourn. But Masuyo declares that this is far from the end of Wolf Corp, that she will not let Wolfgang's dream die, that from this moment forward; her name is Masuyo Wolfgang and that she will take over as the new CEO of the company, and if anyone had any objections; they should make them known now.
And with that; Wolf Corp was under new management.

Oh, these are so nice goals! Good luck with your masters and getting a new therapist! :) Drawing is so cool too, I'm always so amazed by every set you make which is not the "traditional" gif-set (I'm not sure about the proper term; gfx maybe?). You are insanely talented and I hope you'll find a lot of fun in drawing :)
I honestly don't have a lot of goals or anything I want to achieve... I graduated this week from uni so I'm mostly just relaxing and trying to get out of the school-mental state that I have been... like waking up every day thinking I need to do stuff quickly because I have to study later... except I don't because I no longer have school :D So I'm working on this... And catching up on stuff I missed, starting tv shows, finishing them, reading, etc :)
I hope I can get a big girl job this year. I currently have a student/part-time job, but since I just graduated I can only work as a student until March. Although I plan to go back to school in September to get another bachelor's, so even if I don't manage to get the big girl job until then, I can just get another part-time job in September :) I have a lot of money saved up since I still live with my parents so I'm not too worried about potentially not having a job. It would just be nice, but we will see :) I was thinking of learning a new language but I'm not sure how serious I am about this (I get this urge every like 3 months but never really do anything about it), and I was thinking of working out as well! And that's all, I think. I'm just waiting for Jin in June, then Hobi in October, then 2025 :) And trying to stay busy while we reach those months :)
oh thank you honey, you’re too kind, I appreciate your sweet words!! 🥰🤍
huge congratulations on graduating, I’m so proud of you and hope you are too!! please enjoy your newly-found study-free freedom and do all those nice things you listed, you deserve some relaxation now 💕 it sounds as if your mind is also relatively at ease right now and I love that, don’t pressure yourself about the big girl job or anything, everything will fall into place just fine 🫂 until then revel in your free-time and do as much mental care and wellness as possible <3
which language would you like to learn? I keep thinking about trying again with Korean, but work keeps me so busy and rather exhausted, I don’t have the capacities for that unfortunately 😭
I hope you’ve been having a lovely weekend, I’m sending you much love and sunshine, sweetie ☀️

though as much as i support the ndp, im concerned abt the lack of detail regarding their energy and carbon platforms. if we're going to push the ndp left we should focus on genuine commitment to effectively reducing emissions
I don't think there's a major lack of detail:
After having overseen emissions increases every single year in which they have been in power, the Liberals have set a target that is not in line with what the best available science says is needed, and won’t do enough to prevent the catastrophic consequences of warming above 1.5 degrees.
Parliament recently passed C-12, to put in law our collective commitment to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. New Democrats are proud of the role we have played in getting here – from Jack Layton’s advocacy for climate accountability legislation almost 15 years ago, to our success in ensuring C-12 included short-term accountability measures – measures that will be so critical in setting Canada up to meet those targets.
C-12 was a step in the right direction, but it was not the bill New Democrats would have written. New Democrats are committed to helping stabilize the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. To that end we will set a target of reducing Canada’s emissions by at least 50% from 2005 levels by 2030, reaching further wherever possible to account for Canada’s fair share. We know that reaching net-zero by 2050 means taking action now, during the term of this next Parliament. We will work with partners to establish multi-year national and sectoral carbon budgets as a key guiding framework to develop Canada’s path to 2030 and beyond. And we will create and fund a Climate Accountability Office, to provide independent oversight of federal climate progress, to engage the public, and to make recommendations on how to achieve our goals.
Putting a price on carbon has been an important tool in efforts to drive emissions reductions. We will continue with carbon pricing while making it fairer and rolling back loopholes this Liberal government has given to big polluters. But we also recognize that carbon pricing won’t be enough to tackle the climate crisis. Further action is needed.
Building on net-zero legislation will also be a priority for a New Democratic government. We will support Canada’s net-zero target by reviewing financial legislation, such as the Bank of Canada Act, the Export Development Canada Act, and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board Act, to ensure federal financial levers and Crown corporations are aligned with the goal of net-zero. We will work with provinces to put in place a framework for corporate climate accountability to ensure mandatory transparency on carbon risk from publicly traded companies. And we will ensure that strict rules are in place to prevent big companies from using the purchase of offsets as a way to escape their net-zero obligations.
One thing we won’t do is continue down the path that Liberal and Conservative governments have chosen when it comes to spending public money on oil and gas subsidies. Under Prime Minister Trudeau, the federal government spent $18 billion to support oil and gas exploration, production, refining, transportation and more in 2020 alone – and that’s on top of purchasing the Kinder-Morgan oil pipeline. New Democrats know that public funds are best spent supporting the transition to renewable energy, rather than on profitable oil and gas companies. We will fulfill Canada’s G-20 commitment to eliminate these fossil fuel subsidies and redirect these funds to low carbon initiatives, and make sure that future governments can’t reverse this by putting in place legislation to ban any future oil, gas and pipeline subsidies.
We’ll work with the provinces and territories to make Canada an innovation leader on methane reduction in such areas as real-time monitoring and leakage detection, ensuring that provincial methane regulations are genuinely equivalent with the federal regulations, and increasing the ambition of those targets in the 2025-30 period.
The federal government can also model change, by becoming a trail-blazer in energy efficiency, clean technologies and renewable energy use. We will lead by example and procure from Canadian companies producing clean technology, ensure that federal buildings use renewable energy, and move the vehicle fleets of the federal government to electric by 2025, choosing made-in-Canada wherever possible. We will protect Canadian businesses who are taking action to transition to a low-carbon future with a border carbon adjustment that will level the playing field on imports from areas without a carbon price. And we will appoint a Climate Emergency Committee of Cabinet and establish astrong Climate Emergency Secretariat in the PMO to ensure a whole-of-government approach to responding to the climate emergency.
And:
Canadian workers are worried about their place in the changing global economy. The global climate is changing, and Canadian jobs are changing too. But successive Liberal and Conservative governments have left workers to navigate these shifts on their own. New Democrats know that skilled Canadian workers - construction, trades, engineering and others - will be needed to build a low-carbon economy. We will put those workers front and centre of our climate action plan, and fight for workers and their communities to make sure nobody is left behind.
We have a plan to create over a million new good jobs in all communities and rebuild local economies with meaningful, family-sustaining work in every part of the country, all while helping to make the changes we need to succeed in a low carbon future. This will include jobs building green infrastructure in communities across the country, and because products produced by Canadian workers have some of the lowest carbon emissions in the world, we will require the use of Canadian-made steel, aluminum, cement and wood products for infrastructure projects across the country. And just as climate change disproportionately impacts marginalized communities, we are committed to ensuring these same communities benefit from the job-creation and community-building benefits of these investments.
As we turn the corner on COVID-19 and build an economic recovery for people, we have a precious opportunity to build back better. New Democrats would ensure that recovery funding is used to support our net-zero objectives. To that end we would ensure that large businesses receiving recovery funding agree to plan for net-zero – and we would ensure those funds go to supporting Canadian jobs, not executives or shareholders.
The workers most impacted by the changes in our economy cannot pay the price of inaction on climate change. We will work together with labour, employers and the provinces and territories to find solutions for workers and communities. This includes providing dedicated employment support combining access to expanded EI benefits, re-training and job placement services, ensuring companies retain and redeploy their workers when in transition, and ensuring that workers nearing retirement have the retirement security they have worked their whole lives for, without penalties to their pensions if they retire early.
We will boost clean tech research and manufacturing with new funding, incentives and Buy Canadian procurement of environmentally friendly technologies. This will help bring more innovative Canadian clean technology to market and support Canadian manufacturing of batteries, energy storage solutions and alternative fuels like biofuels made from waste. It will also help keep jobs here in Canada.
We will work to put in place joint workplace environment committees – modelled on the successful joint workplace health and safety committees which have had a major impact on making workplaces safer – to help reduce emissions at the source in every workplace.
And we will support sustainable agriculture, working with Canadian farmers to promote sustainable land-management techniques and methods to reduce GHG emissions. We’ll also work with the agricultural sector to help them access low carbon tools and technology, and adapt to climate-induced weather changes and other impacts of the climate crisis, including the associated increase in pests and invasive species.
And:
Our communities are where we can most clearly feel the impacts of the climate emergency – and one of the best places that we can invest to rapidly reduce emissions, save money and make life better.
At the current pace, it will take 142 years to retrofit all low-rise residential buildings in Canada. New Democrats will undertake a mission-based approach, setting an ambitious retrofitting program to upgrade where people live and work, including requiring large scale building retrofits in all sectors. And we will set a target of retrofitting all buildings in Canada by 2050 – beginning with upgrades to all buildings built before 2020 in the next 20 years. Helping families make energy efficient improvements to their homes through low-interest loans help save families almost $900 or more per year on home energy costs. Targeted supports would be provided to low-income households and to renters. Supporting retrofits to improve indoor air quality will also help prevent further waves of COVID-19.
We will work with provinces, municipalities and Indigenous government to make sure that communities have the resources they need to cope safely with extreme weather events. This National Crisis Strategy will help communities plan for and adapt to the changing climate and the weather extremes we are already facing – particularly for vulnerable, remote, and Indigenous communities. The strategy would be supported with long-term funding for adaptation, disaster mitigation, and climate resilient infrastructure. And a new Civilian Climate Corps would mobilize young people and create new jobs supporting conservation efforts and addressing the threat of climate change by undertaking activities such as helping restore wetlands, and planting the billions of trees that need to be planted in the years ahead.
We’ll improve the National Building Code to ensure that by 2025 every new building built in Canada is net-zero. Energy efficiency and sustainable building practices will be at the core of our national housing strategy, leveraging the power of federal investments to create good jobs all across the country delivering the affordable homes Canadians need.
As more Canadians have become accustomed to working from home as a result of the pandemic, more than half of Canadians living in rural areas still don’t have access to high-speed internet. We will make sure that every Canadian has access to affordable, reliable high-speed broadband within four years. This will include taking the first steps to create a Crown corporation to ensure the delivery of quality, affordable telecom services to every community. Supporting more remote work will reduce commuting times and support efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

What’s In a Name: Epilogue - J. Toews
Epilogue.
Where we left off: Jon and Bekah welcomed Lincoln into the world in 2020.
Warnings: smut, language
Word Count: 3,827
Series Masterlist ) Puck ‘n Grind’s masterlist
Tumblr media
2025.
The rink has seemed like home for Bekah since meeting and marrying Jon. This morning it was a bit different as she kneels in front of her now five year old tying his hockey skates.
"Tight enough Linc?" Bekah asks and Lincoln stands to his feet.
"Yes, Momma. Maybe even better than Daddy does it." Bekah muffles her laugh from Lincoln's comment.
"Good. Now, let's get this jersey and your helmet on." Bekah stands and pulls over the house hockey green jersey over his pads. She feels someone staring but doesn't take her focus off the very squirrelly Kindergartener who doesn’t have the patiences for her to stop. Tapping his helmet she hands him the gloves and the eyes she felt moves closer.
"Hey there!  Do ya'll know you have the same last name as the Hawk's captain and your son is wearing his number too. That's cute." Her comment was laced with a sense of entitlement and Bekah bit the inside of her cheek.
"Yup. Heard his foundation bought the jerseys for the league too." Bekah replies and turns her focus back to Lincoln as she rubbed lightly along the JT foundation logo on his shoulder. The woman then got called by her own son and scurried off before continuing.
"Is Daddy going to be off work before my game starts?" Lincoln's voice is muffled with his mouth guard in place.
"He should be here any moment baby boy." Bekah leans down to reassure him. "Speaking of!" Bekah eyes Jon coming through the doors of the rink. He embraces Bekah as he does every time he comes home before turning his attention to the kids.
"Sorry I'm late but looks like you’ve got this covered." Jon whispers after his lips brush hers.
"We are all set. And the fake Louis over there thinks it's cute Linc is wearing 19 and has the Captain's last name too." Bekah smirks.
"Well maybe Scar should run by with her Daddy sweater on." Jon shakes the toddler's hand. "Hey baby girl!" Bekah laughs and goes to take Scarlett out of the toddler carrier attached to her back. The now two year old in her St. Patrick's Day Daddy jersey goes running after Lincoln who started walking to his team. "You would think she runs this place." Jon laughs grabbing Bekah's hand as she tucks the carrier into Lincoln's bag.
"She had grown up coming here. Linc has been taking classes since she was 7 months old, Tae."
"I'm gonna go save Linc from the relentless questions I am sure she’s asking him." Jon heads over to scoop Scarlett up and wishes Lincoln's team good luck playing their first game. The three walk up to sit in the stands and Scarlett starts cheering as the team takes the ice.
"Coot! Core! Let's go Inks!" Scarlett's chubby hands clap.
"You really think he's okay playing with these older boys?" Bekah's leg is bouncing on up and down and Jon's hand settles her.
"Yes. He's playing up because he's good not because he's our son, Beks. No one knows he's five." Jon whispers to calm his wife's nerves.
Lincoln's first hockey game started and even though he was the youngest on the ice by two years, you would never guess. The Toews genes evident in how he played. Bekah, Jon, Scarlett cheered as he scored his first goal and then laughed as he jumped up in excitement but didn’t land on his skates. Bekah looked towards the scoreboard and realized the same mom from earlier was staring at Jon. "I might never get use to people just staring at you." Bekah whispered not realizing she even said it out loud.
"I know Babe." Jon's lips kiss her temple. "Maybe you should bring your Louis with you next game." Jon chuckles knowing the Louis Vuitton collecting dust in the closet was never coming to the hockey rink.
"Funny Tae... funny." Bekah bumps her shoulder into his side. "Maybe if Scar decides potty training is actually something she's interested in I could bring a real purse with me." Bekah spins one of Scarlett's ringlets around her finger.
"She won't even be three until February." Jon bounces his mini-me on his knee and she laughs.
"Yeah, yeah. I know, boys and girls are different." Bekah knowing where Jon was going with the conversation and how she already had Lincoln trained by Scarlett's age. "There you go Linc!" Bekah shouts as Lincoln dives in front of a puck and Jon's laugh rings out.
"You would never know Momma wasn't really into hockey ten years ago. Would ya?" Jon kisses Scarlett's head.  “Now she’s rocking the hockey mom life.” Bekah eyes Jon and he mouths, “sexy at it too.” Bekah feels the heat in her cheeks but turns her attention back to the ice.
The game ended and Jon helped Bekah put Scarlett back in her carrier then met Lincoln and his team.
“There’s my boy!” Jon scooped Lincoln up with all his gear on. “You played hard. We are so proud of you.” Jon drops Lincoln down and the three of them start taking off his gear while Lincoln talks a mile a minute recounting the entire game.
“Did you see my double shift dad? See how I used my skate to kick the puck out of the corner?” Lincoln’s little voice sounding just like Jon and both parents laugh.
“We sure did Linc. Now let’s get home and get ready for Auntie Rin, m’kay?” Bekah feels Scarlett bopping up and down on her back while Jon tries to control Lincoln’s excited dance as he attempts to undress him the rest of the way.
The car ride home was filled with giggles of Brynn’s arrival and recap of the game. Bekah grazed her finger down Jon’s arm and he shifts as she moved to his leg. “What was that for?” She questioned and sees Jon smirk.
“Nothin’ Beks.” The sly smirk permanently graced his face for the rest is the ride. Bekah dropped it knowing if it was something he was hiding she’d find out soon enough.
The kids bolt inside the house as soon as they are unbuckled. “Don’t go too far Rin will be here in less than an hour!” Bekah called out and hears a door shut from behind her and spins on her heals to see her best friend rounding her car.
“How about like one minute? You should know my driving skills would get me here faster!” Brynn opens her arms waiting for Bekah’s embrace. “Now help me with these crazies!” She pulls open the sliding door to a choir of squeals.
“Hey kids!” Bekah leans in and unbuckles Derek and Brynn’s newest edition to their family. Morgan’s little fingers make grabby hands at Bekah. “Hey sweet girl. You taking it easy on your Mommy?”
“You lied about 18 month old girls, friend.  Lied.” Brynn answered.
“Mom’s right Aunt Beks.” Jack, the oldest, pops out and half hugs Bekah. “Morgan is giving her a run for her money as Dad says.” All three adults laugh and Jon scoops up Brynn’s middle son, Jameson.
“How about you boys take Morgan to find Lincoln and Scar. I’m sure they are in the playroom. Remember how to get there?” Both boys nod and run in the house with their sister in tow.
Jon and Bekah flank Brynn as she breathes out. “I love them but they can be a lot.”
“And you are doing a damn good job. Have you heard when Morgan can be adopted yet?” Jon moves to the back of her van to take out the suitcases.
“Caseworker says she’s different than the boys even though it’s the same birth mom. So in the land of foster to adopt... We shall wait.” Brynn laughs. Derek and Brynn decided to be foster parents not long after Lincoln was born. They took placement of Jack and Jameson not long after finishing all their paperwork. Jack was 3 and Jameson was a newborn. When the couple found out that the birth mom had another baby and she could either go into foster care with different family or them. There was no question. They needed to keep the siblings together.
“So glad you decided to spend the boys’ fall break here Rin. I’ve missed you.” Bekah slid a drink over as Brynn launches herself up to the kitchen stool.
“Me too. How do the kids get up here? I see the pictures.” Brynn laughs while taking a sip.
“Have you seen my children, they climb on everything! Scar swings her tiny self up there and then jumps down. It’s resourceful.”
“They are Jon’s kids, there is no denying that.”  Brynn laughs with a sip.
“Hey!  I should take offense to that but I might have to agree there.”  Jon presses his lips to Bekah’s temple and she leans into him.  The friends fell into easy conversation until they were interrupted by Morgan who wanted a snack.  Jon handed the toddler enough fruit snacks for all of them and she toddled back.  “I’ve wondered this for awhile.  Why is she not a J?”
Both women just look at him.  “Tae, I’ve never thought about it.  Jack and Jameson.  A J girl name makes sense.”  Bekah looks at Brynn who just shrugs her shoulders.  The caseworker said her and Derek could change any of the kids names but they decided to leave them for a few reasons then gave the boys new middle names when they were officially adopted.
“They are all alcohol brands, but is that just...” Jon questions and Brynn’s mouth drops opens.
“I... how... ummm...”  Brynn starts and her eye go wide.  “At least they aren’t named after the place they were...”  Brynn looks down the hall then back to her friends, “conceived.” Her face lights up with mischief.
“Rin, Linc and Scar aren’t named after that.”  Bekah answers with a puzzled look written all over her face.
“Sure they are.  Lincoln was in your Lincoln Park place and still miss that roof, every time I come here...”  Jon starts laughing as he’s caught on.
“But Scarlett?  Are you saying she was in Columbus?  Like Scarlett and Grey?  Because that’s not the case.”  Bekah runs her hand over her face.
“Beks, we live on Red Maple.  R-E-D.”  Jon laughs while pulling Bekah into his side.  “And everyone in this room can do the math on Scar’s birthday and my last cup win.”
“Oh.  My.  No!”  Bekah responds sending both Jon and Brynn into a fit of laughter.
“So if Jon makes the All-Star game this year, maybe we can expect a Seattle named baby to come out of the trip?”  Brynn snickers knowing she’s getting under her best friend’s skin.
“Speaking of trips.  I miss you coming with me.”  Jon seems to have changed the subject before hearing his name being called and he retreats to answer the kids.
“Bekah, you know you could go with him Wednesday.  They play in St. Louis.  I’ve got the kids and Kelly lives here now.  I’m sure she can help if something goes crazy, which I don’t plan on that happening.”  Brynn jumps off the stool and backs up to look down the hallway.  “Seriously, you should go.”
Brynn was right.  After the shut down of the economy in 2020, Kelly and Zack made the decision to move back to Chicago where Zack started teaching at DePaul for help with future college tuition.  Bekah and Jon hadn’t gotten away as much as they had in the past without taking the kids.  Taking a day and a half to go watch him play and enjoy dinner alone did sound amazing.
“You sure Rin?”  Bekah sounded giddy.
“Yes, very much so.”  Brynn had wandered into the living room that was now the Sedona inspired room.  Prints hung of Jon and Bekah’s first trip, wedding day, the first time they took each kid and a family picture from the past summer when both kids hiked most of the way up.  “I like the new one!”
“Speaking of new ones.”  Jon’s stealth like entrance made both ladies jump.  “I have something for you, Babe.”  As he spoke, he pulls out a puck from his pocket.  Bekah spins it in her hand and tears come to her eyes.
“Lincoln’s first game 8U game. October 18, 2025.”  She sees that Jon had Lincoln sign the top too.  “Tae.”  She squeaks out.
“We might need a Lincoln shelf.”  Jon wraps his arms around his wife and pulls her in.
“Tell him!”  Brynn breaks the couple’s embrace as she spoke.  Jon looks down with his eyebrows raised.
“How about I come to St. Louis with you this week?”  Bekah stands on her tippy toes to whisper in his ear, “Just me.”
“YES!”  Jon shouts out.  “Seriously, Brynn?  You are making this happen?”  Jon turns and pulls her into a hug.
“You two lovebirds...” Brynn started and looked at how Jon lifted Bekah up in the air in so much joy about a few moments alone. “Still after all these years I’m happy as hell for you but also your passion for one another is...” she starts making a heaving motion.
With that, Bekah and Brynn soaked up their time together. Let Lincoln take a day off school on Monday to play with what he calls his cousins. And really with David’s kids living in Manitoba, Kelly and Brynn’s kids were the closest thing he had to cousins near him.
Monday night was a home game. Jon rented a box and invited Kelly and her family to join. The kids had so much fun cheering on the Hawks. After years of going to games they still loved the atmosphere. Tuesday morning came quick. Bekah left a giant list of instructions for Brynn which made her laugh. Jon took Lincoln to school before taking a morning skate. They flew out that afternoon. Jon interlaced his fingers in Bekah’s as the plane took off.
“You look like a first time flyer Beks. What gives?” Jon kisses her ear sweetly.
“Just worried about the kids and Rin and...” Jon’s lips land on hers to stop the rant swirling from her brain to her lips.
“They will be fine. Promise.” Jon pulled his arm around her and she breathed him in. The flight was short and the drive to the hotel was too. “You know you’ve never stayed here but could’ve all those years ago. New Years. Winter Classic.” Jon places her bag on top of his and grabs his wife’s hand.
“Yeah, I didn’t make the wises choices back then.” Bekah whispered.
“You are here aren’t you? We are here... so those choices lead to now.” Jon’s knuckle pressed the button. “And while it took some convincing..”
“Sorry.” Bekah mumbled as she pressed their floor.
“Baby, don’t be.” Jon kisses the top of her head as the door opens and leads them to their room. Opening the door he drops the bags as Bekah closes the door. His body pressing hers agains the door and lips locked together. Pulling at her legs to wrap them around him. They break and Jon’s lips slide down her neck. A moan escapes from her lips.
“Tae.” She tries to continue but Jon’s lips are on hers again. His hands tight around her with the door holder her up. “Tae.” She moans out again. Jon leans back a little to look her in the eyes.
“Ca va, mon amour?” Jon leans back and takes in his wife.
“I’m okay. Extremely turned on but also slightly worried about your teammates hearing us as they check in. Plus, there are things I would like to do to you that I cannot do pinned to this door.” Bekah leans to bite at his lips.
“Well for starters we aren’t on the team floor. I made sure of that. Now, what things are you talking about?” Jon pulls both of their bodies away from the door and carries Bekah towards the bed.
“First, Captain,  I’d like you to rid you of these clothes.”  Bekah wiggles free of Jon’s grip and stands to her feet.  He grunts as she starts to take off his clothes.  Running her fingers over his still well toned abs followed by her tongue until her teeth find his boxers.  She pulls on them with only her mouth and Jon helps with an approving grunt.  “When is the last time we didn’t have rushed sex Tae?”
“Too long Beks.”  Jon barely gets out as his entire body reacts to Bekah’s lips running along the bottom of his shaft.  “C'est cela.”  He moans out as he finds the edge of the bed.  Bekah continues until she wraps her lips around him and he stops her.  “I need you undressed and up here.”  He lifts her up and slides her tunic dress over her body then her leggings.  “Damn sexy Baby.  Damn Sexy.”  He stands to carefully removing her bra then underwear kissing her skin as more is exposed.
“Really?”  Bekah questions placing her hands over her breasts.  “Sorry.  Just feeling not as perky as I once was.”  Bekah doesn’t look up at Jon with her admission.  He pulls her chin up to make her eyes meet his.
“Rebekah, you are more beautiful and sexy than ever.  I’m so fucking lucky you are mine.”  He shifts her to lay her on the bed and hovers over her body.
“I’m lucky too.  I just went from confident at hell to catching a glimpse of my stretch mark in the mirror.”  She ran her hand over the mentioned mark from her last pregnancy.  Jon met her hand with his lips.
“This means you worked hard to bring our sassy daughter into the world.”  Jon moves up to her breasts and sucks one in between his teeth.  “And I’m glad I currently don’t have to share these.”  Bekah’s breath hitches then she laughs as he moves to do the same to the other.  He kisses down her stomach and moves his way between her legs.  Spreading her lips with his fingers he sucks on her clit causing Bekah’s hips to jump off the bed and her hand to land in his hair.  Jon hums in approval.  He moves his fingers to scissor deep inside her.  Bekah went to call out his name and bit her lip.  Jon looked up and kissed her thigh.  “Beks, no one to wake up.  Let me hear you.”  He moved back to circling Bekah’s clit with his tongue as she moaned out.
“Tae.  Fuck.  Tae.”  Bekah feels her orgasm crashing over her.  Jon doesn’t let up as it washes over her.  Her legs tremble and toes curl up his back.  She loosens her grip and he quickly shifts up her body to press himself fully in her.  Both moaning in the familiarity and need for each other.  Jon presses his lips to hers and stays there.  “Tae, move please.” Bekah tries to press her hips up and Jon smiles.
“I love you Beks.” He simply says as he pulls out slightly and starts a rhythm making both moan and spill out affirmations in the moment.  Jon feels Bekah tighten completely around him and with a few more movements of his hips they both hit their high.  Jon crashing into Bekah’s body, chests heaving from the intensity.  They stay like this for a moment then a beeping sound starts in the direction of the pile of clothes.
“Tae, what is that?”  Bekah questions and Jon laughed.  “What?”
“I set an alarm to make sure we made it to team dinner.”  Jon moves to find his phone.  Turning off the alarm he looks at a notification.  “Oh, dinner on our own.  Fantastic!”  He jumps back in bed and wraps Bekah up.
“Can we still go get dinner?”  Bekah asks.
“Or order in.”  A sly smile crosses Jon’s face and Bekah nods.  “Hey, did you tell Brynn we were trying for a third already?”
“No, why do you ask?”  Bekah looks up at him.
“Well she mentioned the whole naming of kids thing and Seattle plus she suggested this trip...”  Jon trails off.
“Oh, no, but she’s Rin.  I swear she knows things without me telling her.”  Bekah jokes.  “Oh, shit.  What time is it?”  She looks at Jon’s phone.  “Get your shirt on, we need to FaceTime the kids!”  Jon heads to his luggage and quickly pulls out two Hawks shirts.  He starts to FaceTime and Bekah looks at her now sexed looking hair and quickly braids it to the side just in time.
“Hey guys!”  Jon waves at the screen seeing Brynn, Lincoln and Scarlett sitting on the couch.  Bekah notices Brynn’s face with Lincoln asked what they have done since they got there and Jon talked about getting to the hotel and checking in.  The family talked for a little and said their goodbyes.  Jon gets up to head to the shower and looks back.
“J’ai besoin de nous.”  Bekah whispers just looking at the floor.
“Babe, did you just say I need us?”  Jon comes back over and pulls her up to his chest.
“Yeah.  That’s right, right?”  Bekah bats her eyes.
“It is.  You are picking up more French from my mom’s FaceTime lessons with Lincoln aren’t you?”  Jon kisses her cheek and she feels the heat rushing to them.
“Yeah.  Speaking of, he said, ‘j’ai mon voyage’ and also ‘tabarnak’ the other day.”  Jon starts laughing.  Hard.  “Shit, what did he pick up?”
“Well, I had enough is basically what j’ai mon voyage means and...as for the other.  I’ll talk to my parents.  I’m sure they didn’t mean to teach him what some deem a cuss word.”  Bekah’s mouth hangs open.  “Babe, I’ll fix it, okay?”  He moves her braid and kisses her again.  “Back to the I need us.  Explain.”
“Just that.  I need us.  I love our family and our life and even this team but at the end of the day it’s me and you.”  She spins her ring around her finger.
“Well, Beks... J’ai besoin de nous too.”  Jon whispers.  “I told you hockey is almost over and then it’s just us being parents and husband and wife.”
“You really think you are done Tae?”  Bekah questions.
“Yeah.  Dach is ready to be captain.  I have four rings.  Kaner and I are talking about going out together.  This team has what it takes to win another one too.  Now, I would love baby number three to experience some of this hockey life.”  Jon rubs Bekah’s lower abdomen.
“Are you asking if you think that got me pregnant?”  Bekah laughs and Jon nods.  “Well, you might have to try harder Mr. Toews.”  She smirks and heads towards the shower.  “And if so... I’m not naming the baby Louis!”
“Death of me Beks.  You will be the death of me!”  Jon scoops Bekah up and heads towards the shower.

I think I want to make a 5 year plan or something like that. Maybe if I set real goals for myself I can make things happen. You think? Let’s give it a shot at least.
I’m only just writing this now. This is the first time I have ever written a real plan for myself. If we are being honest and blunt I really thought I would kill self by now. Yeah when I made it past high school it was a shock to me but now college. Yeah I’m a little impressed with myself. I suffer from a lot for trauma and mental illness. I have a lot of shit that goes on in my head and In my life and well shit was a mess. Throughout that all I succeeded. Now here I am. Standing at the doorway to the rest of my life and I am 100% about to go with it.
With my little sister about to enter high school in the fall I see her distancing herself from us to find herself. I think she will be busy and family time will be hard to come by. I am going to love this because the guilt will not be there to stay home or have to be around. Yes we will definitely still schedule time to be around each other and I think we’ll have a good time when that comes but I want to use these next 4/5 years to put in place something for myself. So here we go.
I feel like with this being a draft. I also also hate putting shit in stone I’m going to let myself come back and edit my plan as time goes on. Im hoping that Quarantine won’t go past the fall at least and will let me like stay on track with a plan of some sort.
Today’s Date is April 25 2020 11:25 pm when I write this.
Date of 1st Edit:
-
By December 2020 I want to have taken the GRE exam and hopefully done well enough. I’ll probably end up taking a second one in January 2021 just to make myself feel better.
One year From now (April 2021) I want to say I have. Traveled by myself at least once. Traveled with my friends at least once. Gotten another tattoo or 2. (covid pandemic permitting).
By June of 2021 I want to be done apply to my Grad school program(s) (so far I have one picked out but I’m going to look to apply to one may two others)
Current Grad school program(s)
- Master’s in Childhood education and Early Childhood education @ Queens college for no childhood education degree holders
(that’s me I have a bachelors in criminal justice. Yeah featuring that degree was a big mistake I’ll tell you and a huge waste of time).
By Fall of 2021 I want to be in my masters Program. I would also like to have paid off my credit card By this point. I would like to have bought myself a new laptop and an iPad with all it’s accessories. (Yes I think these will be very important for school)
By December 2021 I want to have a 3.5 GPA in school. I want to be working a relaxed full time job that allows me to go out on the weekends to see my friends. (I’m asking for a lot I know).
By June 2022 (I’m picking very odd months at this point). I want to have gained my motorcycle license and possibly a motorcycle. I want to also travel to Texas by myself by this point.
September 2022 I want to be entering my second year of grad school. (If I don’t do a dual program this would be my last year, the dual program adds just one extra semester) (don’t let that stop you from doing that!)
At this point I want to start looking for either my own place or a place to move if my family has not already moved by this point.
January 2023 I want to spend out of state. Possibly with friends but definitely not in New York.
April 2023 (Three years from today.) I want to have grown my beard. Been going to the gym semi constantly at this point. Saved at least 10,000 dollars. Paid off my car loan. Be more financially responsible.
August of 2023 I want to spend this entire month at the beach in some way. Just a thought.
September 2023 I would be entering the last semester in my dual program I think. (my 26th birthday ) I want to spend this birthday out of state somehow with friends.
December 2023 Graduate with my Master’s degree. Start planning to pay off student debt and grind hard to get a teaching job.
January 2024 take the next possible exam to get my teaching license or apply for my license (however it works)
April 2024 (4 years from now) look for apartments or places to put down payments to live forever possibly. Possibly look into buying secon car if the money is there.
Sept 2024 (Turning 27) get my 1st teaching job! I don’t care how I have to do it I want to be teaching by this point. I want to have a classroom or somethinf to call my own and be a full on teacher.
January 2025 I want to spend my 1st Christmas break as a teacher enjoying everything I have so far in life. I also want to be playing piano still and drums. I want to have invest money in drawing tablets or programs and cameras to take pictures. I want to make a little money on my artwork on the side if I can. It would also be nice to be in a relationship by this point in my life just saying.
April 2025 (Five years from now) I want to be in a good spot financially to have hopefully moved out by myself or something or that nature. I want to have traveled a lot and have gotten plenty of tattoos. I want to be going out and seeing my friends often enough. Overall I want to be happy.
So there it is my five year plan thus far. It is a work in progress it won’t be finished until April 2025. I have a long way to go. Hopefully I’m still doing this in five years.

Fic: Doors Open ch. 1
A while ago my lovely friend Gabby asked me to expand on the Unconventional universe and nearly two years later, here we are. This is part one of eleven (maybe, we’ll see). Anyone unfamiliar with the series might want to check out the original fic here, bc this might not make a ton of sense (or don’t, you do you).
Read on AO3
Read on Fanfiction.net
Nothing particularly exciting happening during the first year Elsie was on the Waverider.
She got acclimated to the timeship (both Sara and Leonard thought she made the switch to the future remarkably well) and to her new family. She was truly loved on the Waverider, even managing to grow on Rip — he had initially been unsure about Sara and Leonard’s decision to adopt the little girl from the 1930s, however, as he watched Elsie’s relationships with her parents grow (and when he saw that her removal from the thirties didn’t destroy the timeship) he couldn’t ignore the benefit she was bringing to the team. They all enjoyed having Elsie on the Waverider. She added an element of fun to the dynamic amongst the team.
She played dress-up with Kendra and Ray, Jax was teaching her how to play football just like he promised, even Mick had a soft spot for her. Early on in their time on the Waverider, Mick had proven to have quite a knack for cooking, and since Elsie’s arrival, the two had taken to making meals for the team together. She would sit on the metal counter and watch him chop vegetables, and he would always let her stir ingredients together with a big wooden spoon — he even let Elsie stir things on the stove, even though Sara always told her no.
During a brief shore-leave a few months after Elsie moved onto the Waverider, the team returned to the present time and Sara and Leonard introduced their daughter to their families. They legally adopted her on that visit as well, and she officially became Elsie Lance.
“Lance?” Lisa had repeated when they told her.
“The Snart name dies with me,” Leonard had replied, answering her confusion.
“Unless I keep my name when I get married,” Lisa then pointed out.
“That’s not funny,” Leonard had replied seriously.
Elsie’s fourth birthday came and went. They celebrated it on the Waverider with a big game of hide-and-seek that even Rip joined in on, and a trip to Pompeii to watch Mount Vesuvius erupt.
Not too long after, Kendra said goodbye to the team and they welcomed two new members: Nate and Amaya. Rip was relieved to see that Elsie had not become a distraction for the team, but a motivator. Sara had become less reckless on the field, but had lost none of her will or tenacity. Leonard had grown increasingly protective of his team, even the new members. They all seemed to work better together.
Even though Elsie attended all the team meetings and sometimes journeyed into the times they traveled to, she had never joined the team on a mission. That is, she hadn’t joined the team on a mission yet.
“Time to get dressed,” Sara said to Elsie as she walked into her bedroom, “Did you pick out clothes for today?”
“Uh-huh,” Elsie nodded, holding out a bundle of clothing.
“Pink jeans and a pink dress,” Sara commented with raised eyebrows, “Wow. Really?”
“Yup.”
“Okay,” Sara let out a sigh as she shrugged, crouching down to help her get dressed.
“Miss Lance,” Gideon said as Sara helped Elsie pull off her princess nightdress, “Rip would like you to know that he has called a team meeting.”
“Okay,” Sara nodded, “Thanks Gideon.”
“Of course,” Gideon replied. Then she was silent.
“I wanna play with Kendra,” Elsie said.
“We’ve been over this,” Sara said, pulling the cotton dress over Elsie’s head and beginning to help her arms through the sleeves, “Kendra went back to the real world. Then Amaya and Nate came, remember?”
Elsie shook her head
“Yes you do,” she replied, “You played restaurant with them yesterday.”
“Oh,” she replied, gripping her mother’s shoulders as she stepped into the pants Sara was holding out in front of her.
“Ready?” Sara asked, once the pink jeans were pulled up and buttoned.
“You gotta do my hair,” Elsie said.
“I’m gonna do it on the Bridge during the meeting,” she told her, picking up a brush and several hair ties from the surface of Elsie’s dresser, “Let’s go.”
Elsie bounded out the door and down the corridors of the Waverider, Sara following at a much more comfortable pace.
The rest of the team was already at the meeting when Sara arrived; even Elsie beat her to the bridge, waiting for her in a metal chair.
“Miss Lance,” Rip said, “Thank you for finally joining us. Let’s begin.”
Sara crossed the room and sat in her chair next to Leonard. Elsie stood in front of her, leaning against her legs as Sara started to run the brush through her blonde hair.
“Here’s the plan,” Rip said, “Our latest adversary is taking refuge in the year 2025.”
“Hey, that’s close to our time!” Ray said.
“Yes, Mr. Palmer, it is indeed,” Ray nodded, “In 2025, he doesn’t pose any threat to society, but he is in something like a planning mode. He knows what he’s doing, now he’s just getting ready.”
“So what are we trying to do, exactly?” Jax asked.
“Figure out his plan so we can head him off at the proper moment."
“Awesome!” Nate said, “We’re gonna snuff him out before he burns!”
“Did someone say burn?” Mick asked, seeming to tune into the meeting just then, “I’m in.”
“I appreciate the enthusiasm, Mr. Rory,” Rip said, “but we’re going to be doing this mission a little differently. Think early days, Raymond and Kendra buying a house in the fifties. Some of you will be scattered throughout the city. The rest will be posing as the occasional tourist when necessary, and parsing through the information we collect on the Waverider.”
“What happened to diving in and hoping for the best?” Amaya asked.
“Our success rate with that tactic dropped to a level so low it warranted a change in plan. We’re trying something a bit more strategic this time.”
Amaya nodded.
“So,” he continued, “Our new mission will be taking us to València, a coastal city in the south of Spain.
“We’re going to Spain?” Ray exclaimed, “Cool!”
“Yes, Mr. Palmer,” he said, “Our target is Sebastián Reyes. In 2025, he is thirty two years old, and within the following decade, he will become one of the world’s most dangerous people, joining the ranks with Ivan the Terrible, Robespierre, and Osama bin Laden.”
“What exactly is he doing?” Nate asked.
“What any man of his kind does: tries to eradicate what’s unlike him. For him, it is people under a certain tax bracket. It’s his opinion that a lack of money is the result of a lack of intelligence and poor decision-making. There are, of course, other factors involved, but his goal is to eliminate those who earn under a certain amount, take the money they leave behind into the government of Spain and therefore solve the debt crisis and leave more money for the remaining citizens, including, of course, himself.”
“Why are we only hearing about him now?” Sara asked as she wrapped a hair band around one of Elsie’s braids, “If he’s really this bad, why haven’t you ever mentioned him before?”
“Because, until recently, he didn’t exist — that is to say, he wasn’t the person he is now. Something we did in the last month or so changed his story and inspired some terrible actions from Mr. Reyes. We are going to València to fix it.”
“Who are you placing there more permanently?” Nate asked.
“I’m sending Jax and Martin straight onto the campus of the University of València. Martin will be taking up the position of professor of physics and Jax will be a graduate student in the biotechnology department.
“Do they have a good football team?” Jax asked.
“If by football, you mean the game with a black-and-white ball you can’t touch with your hands, then yes, I believe they do,” Rip answered, “To continue, I’m placing Mr. Palmer in the same apartment complex as our target in the hopes that you can get close to him and we can find out more about his day-to-day life.”
“Cool!” Ray said, “I’ve always wanted to be friends with a sociopath!”
He didn’t seem to notice the bemused faces the rest of his team shot him.
“The last group I’m sending in on a slightly more permanent basis will include Sara, Leonard, and of course, Elsie. You three will be placed in a suburban neighborhood a little outside the city. You’ll be posing as a family who moved to the area for work. I have a spot for Elsie in a preschool and jobs lined up for both of you — and I request that you both actually attend them please.”
“Hey!” Sara protested as Leonard said, “That’s fair.”
“The rest of us — Mick, Nate, Amaya, and myself — will be staying on the Waverider to parse through and organize all the information you collect.”
“When do we leave?” Jax asked.
“Tomorrow,” Rip replied, “I suggest those who will leave us start packing.”
“Where are we going?” Elsie asked her mother later that evening.
“We’re going on a vacation,” Sara answered.
“What’s a vacation?”
“What?” she asked absently, “Oh, right.”
Sara often forgot that Elsie had come from the 1930s. She made the jump to the futuristic setting of the Waverider very well, but part of that was because she was going from one extreme to another; her new home held no resemblance to her old one. It existed in a kind of bubble, separate from any particular moment in time, so Elsie still had some gaps.
“A vacation is when you go somewhere else besides where you live, just for fun. Some people go to relax and some go for sightseeing,” she explained.
“Where are we going?” Elsie asked.
“Spain,” Sara replied, “for a mission. Daddy and I will be working, so I guess it’s less of a vacation than actually moving there…for a little while. Daddy and I are gonna go to work and you’re gonna go to school.”
“School?” Elsie repeated.
“Yeah, like how Sofia goes to princess school in that show you watch. You’re gonna go to school and have a teacher and learn new stuff everyday with kids your age.”
“Cool!”
Sara was feeling cautiously optimistic about the mission, although she would be lying if she said she didn’t feel a twinge of worry about the sudden change in tactic. Rip wasn’t wrong in his comment about their previous few missions not going particularly well, but they always accomplished what they needed to. They had a routine: screwing things up before they made things better. Maybe it wasn’t particularly efficient, but it managed to be effective. Changes in their routine might not go over well, and this was the source of Sara’s anxiety.
Her main concern was Elsie, who had only ever left the Waverider for more than a few days at a time. This was her home, the only one she had known since war-torn Norway. Perhaps choosing this mission, one that would completely uproot her daily life, as her first mission wasn’t the best idea. However, Elsie didn’t seem too fazed by the prospect of moving to Spain for an indefinite amount of time, so Sara chose not to worry — or, rather, pretended not to worry.
Rip had told Sara and Leonard that, to spare them the inconvenience of furnishing an entire house, Gideon had generated everything they would need, down to the silverware and toys. All they had to worry about was clothes and any personal items that would be missed during their time away from the Waverider. Both Sara and Leonard had packed everything they needed into two boxes and while the latter began dinner (the chore wheel had landed on him that day, much to Leonard’s disgruntlement, as he thought he’d get to evade the job entirely for at least several months), Sara began going through Elsie’s clothes, tossing the ones more apt for warm weather into a cardboard box with Elsie’s name printed on it.
She hit a roadblock when she told Elsie to pick just a couple toys to bring with them to Spain.
“But who’s gonna play with them while I’m gone?” Elsie whined.
“Maybe Nate will,” Sara said, trying to hide her frustration, “You can’t take them all. Rip said there’s toys for you at the new house so, like I’ve said seven times, pick three and put them in your backpack. I’ll be back in five minutes.”
She turned away and headed for the door so she wouldn’t have to see Elsie’s pout (she made a mental note to make sure Leonard stayed away from her room for a while — if Sara thought she might cave, he certainly would).
Eventually Elsie picked her three toys — a stuffed elephant, a Rapunzel dress-up dress, and a set of markers that Sara traded out for a deck of rainbow playing cards when she wasn’t looking because she knew Elsie would miss them more (and they would be impossible to find in València because Gideon made them herself). The team ate dinner together in the mess hall (the last team dinner for a while, Ray realized sadly) and then Sara and Leonard let Elsie have dessert — blue popcorn, another one of Elsie’s farfetched requests neither Sara nor Leonard knew how Gideon accomplished — in their bed while they watched a movie.
“What happened to not letting her sleep in our bed anymore?” Leonard asked quietly, gesturing to Elsie who had fallen asleep about an hour into Bridge to Terabithia, curled up in Sara’s arms.
Sara locked down at her daughter.
“Yeah, wishful thinking, I guess,” she replied. She looked to him, furrowing her eyebrows when she saw an expression on his face that usually signified he was having some kind of internal debate, “What?”
He let out a sigh, “I just was wondering if this is a good idea. We never involved her in a mission before, never mind a new type of mission. We don’t know how this is going to pan out.”
“I know,” Sara nodded seriously, “I’ve thought about that too.”
When they decided Elsie should stay with them on the Waverider, they hadn’t been ignorant to the knowledge that having a toddler onboard the timeship during a mission to safeguard all of time would not be easy. Leonard and Sara had quickly agreed they wouldn’t bring Elsie on missions, not even simple reconnaissance trips — they had seen those go sideways — but that still left the concern of what to do with her when they had to be out on the field. More often than not, at least one person from the team wouldn’t need to go on the mission — usually Rip, as of late — and that person would watch her. Occasionally, however, a mission would require the efforts of the entire team. In that case, Gideon had assured Sara and Leonard she could make sure Elsie stayed safe.
Although those types of missions were few and far between, and nothing bad had ever happened during any of them (in fact, the Waverider hadn’t been attacked in a while — not since long before Elsie came onboard), Sara and Leonard still hated the idea of leaving their daughter alone on the Waverider.
“And I know we said we wouldn’t take Else on missions,” Sara continued, “but this is gonna be different. It won’t be like our normal missions where we, you know, kick ass and then get the hell out. It’s gonna be longer, more strategic.”
Leonard nodded his agreement.
“And,” Sara continued, “I actually trust Rip with this stuff. He’s a dad too. He wouldn’t do anything to put her in danger.”
“I know you’re right, but you know me, I get stuck in the hypotheticals. If something happens to her…” he trailed off.
“I know,” she nodded, “We’re just gonna have to be careful. If something bad does happens, we bring her back to the Waverider — and hey, bonus points: we get to hold it against Rip for the rest of his life.”
Sara saw Leonard smirk slightly.
“I should get Else to her bed,” she said, carefully shifting Elsie in her arms and getting to her feet, “Long day tomorrow; we’re moving to Spain.”

FIRE SIGNS; WHAT’S YOUR KARMA 2019
ARIES
MONEY: Career and ambitions will continue to go through change, transformation and even “destruction” with Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn sitting in this area of life.    Plus  the Solar and Lunar Eclipses in Capricorn this year will all affect the same area of life.  The first Solar Eclipse in Capricorn, January 5th brings an offer for a new career structure that should lead to greater authority and power over time.  The offer may not seem like much on the surface but will generate great rewards/recognition in the future.   By the time the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse occurs July 16th, you should see results and progress.    Another opportunity comes your way at the next Solar Eclipse in Capricorn, December 26th.
With Uranus back in Aries until March 7th, you can expect a release of tensions allowing many problems to be solved at once.  New people coming into your life will be the catalyst for you to change direction and manner of expression.  Once Uranus moves permanently into Taurus March 7th, for six years,  unexpected financial offers and opportunities will “test” your self-worth/confidence.   At the same time stimulating your creative potential beyond your comfort zone. Sudden change in the area of finances should be expected.    If you’re stagnant in the same employment/position, expect the Universe to create “upheavals”  affecting your security.   The course of events that occur could “force” you  to  reconsider your current job and look elsewhere.  Evidence of job change will be evident around the time of the Full Moon in Virgo, February 18th. in your house of work, health  service to Self and others, showing you are not in a healthy work environment with healthy people.    This will become glaringly obvious around time.
When Mercury retrogrades in Scorpio October 31st - November 20th,  unpleasant truths maybe revealed that have been hidden, which, once exposed could mark a significant “ending” to certain joint financial partnerships.
SEX: The Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Leo, January 21st, initiates closure of love relationships that are not fulfilling/bringing happiness, at the same time motivating you to rethink your approach love and the people you choose to be with.   A change of attitude/approach to love and the people you choose as a partner, is necessary this year if you want to be happy.    When Mercury retrogrades in Leo, July 7th - 31st,  memories of past lives/childhood experiences could come back to “haunt” you.   However, you must be cautious before going back to old loves, because they really haven’t changed and will only serve to regurgitate mistakes and unhappy experiences between you.    Childhood  experiences hold they to the  current state of love in your life, a chance for you to explore and go deep.   You will find the answers you’re looking for if you can do this.
POWER: With Jupiter in Sagittarius unity December 2nd, the focus of this transit will be  expansion, good luck travel, higher consciousness, travel, optimism, foresight, study and publishing, empowering you to feel free to really step outside of your comfort zone and explore the world with a broader perspective.
The key to success is to not fear doing something completely different and interacting with people different from your Self.   If  opportunity presents itself to learn something new, that elevates your perspective of life, take it. you’ll be surprised at the positive affect this has on your overall attitude and beliefs.
The “World is your Oyster” in 2019, therefore going backwards, repeating the same thing is not an option or recipe for success.
Tumblr media
LEO
MONEY: With the Full Moon in Leo January 21st you’ll be influenced to reconsider actions taken/plan to take, to further your ambitions, regardless of how right you may or may not be.  If you try to “force” issues you run the risk of threatening others to react against you which will not have a good outcome.
With the New Moon Solar Eclipse in Capricorn January 5th, you’l have to contend with a new employment structure/employer, that you might feel the need to criticize.  If you do this you’ll miss the point  of what certain individuals are trying to accomplish to create positive changes.   If you can avoid being too fixed on your own perspective and see other’s point of view, everything will work out satisfactorily.
By July 16th, the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn will finally bring an end to an old work structure that no longer serves a purpose. motivating you to go elsewhere.  However, with Saturn and Pluto both  retrograde in Capricorn, April 29th - September 18th and April 24th - October 2nd, a lot of difficult issues, undermining and problems will need to be resolved before you can move on.   Financial plans could also fall apart around the Full Moon in Virgo February 18th.  This won’t be a bad thing because these plans were not too beneficial to you furthering your goals, neither was the foundation solid enough to survive.
With Neptune in Pisces highlighting joint financial partnerships, you can expect dissolving to occur with agreements that may have had a future If the inner workings of these partnership were more transparent, practical and straightforward.   if this dissolving takes place, you might experience fear insecurity and doubt about forming new alliances with others.   All this can be avoided if you don’t ignore weaknesses that are obvious and need attention.
Uranus will remain i Aries until March 7th, then move into the sign of Taurus until July 7th 2025.    While the planet is  stallion Aries, you have to make more of an effort to step out of your  comfort zone of beliefs about success, recognition, interacting with different kinds of people  and overall achievement.   This is a time to be more open to growth, broaden your perspective of life, in order to achieve your life purpose. Once Uranus moves into Taurus March 7th,  you must prepare for career change during this cycle, because it will come unexpectedly and affect financial prosperity, status/power and future ambitions.
By the time Jupiter moves into Capricorn December 2nd for one year, You will know by then, if it hasn’t already occurred, that you’ll have to work hard to preserve security, structures of identity, home and employment.  Any weakness with career will be made very evident, therefore attention to this areas of life is important.
SEX: Jupiter in Sagittarius highlights  romance, happiness, childhood and risks. Throughout the year of this cycle until December 2nd, it will be necessary  to evaluate why you’re not happy in love and not fear delving into childhood experiences to find answers.    Beliefs you hold onto about love need to be looked at and most likely let go. Once you let go, it will be easier to have a fresh broader viewpoint that isn’t so limiting or dogmatic.  Make an effort to learning about love and how to love, not just physically but to appreciate your partner on other levels too.
POWER: This is a year when the only way to maintain and power is by removing illusions  you have about Cause and Affect.  This may sound trivial but in fact Cause And affect applies to everyone, no-one is exempt.    Although for sometime you may have gotten away with breaking the rules and Natural Law without consequence, this will change with Neptune in Pisces unity March 31st 2025,.  Past deeds will inevitably come back to “haunt” you, because the Universe requires you start to learn your life lessons now.  The outcome depends on whether you resist or accept these “lessons” : Acceptance will bring later rewards for work well done, resistance more karma to deal with.
During 2019, t wouldn’t be a bad idea to take up meditation  or similar modality, to help you become more introspective, self-aware and insightful enough to understand  Universal Law.  This is the “test” for 2019.
Tumblr media
SAGITTARIUS
MONEY: With Jupiter in your sign until December 2nd, then moving into Capricorn for one year, and your house of money, material possession, self-worth and personal resources, you’ll be at the start of a positive new cycle, bringing changes for the better.   Currently Jupiter is giving you protection from any and all negativity directed towards you.  As long as yo have a broad view of you abilities and what you can achieve, this cycle should end on a very positive note.
Now is when you should be in action to overcome, negotiate, prosper, succeed, start a new business, settle business disagreements, buy a car and receive just payment owed to you.    New opportunities can be created while expanding your talents.  Uranus still in Aries until March 7th, is nudging these creative abilities, to stretch beyond your comfort zone, take bigger risks and show the world what you can do.
The New Moon Solar Eclipse in Capricorn, affecting your money house,  will bring a new business structure, better equipped to support your goals.  by July 16th, the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in the same sign, will eventually end the old structure you’ve been used to  and form of employment.   As the year closes the last and final Eclipse in Capricorn will bring yet again another solid formidable opportunity to enhance goals, ambitions, authority and power.  In conjunction with Jupiter moving into Capricorn December 2nd for one year,  long-term opportunities should be your focus and past opportunities will resurface to fulfill current needs.   Any problems/misunderstandings with people in authority/power can also be resolved around the time of the Full Moon in Virgo, February 18th.  Be sure to not give up on  your own objectives because perseverance, patience and diligence will bring success. Do all you can to learn new things/subjects and gather information because there’s still a great deal you don’t know and have yet to learn/understand.
With Uranus permanently in Taurus March 7th - July 7th 2025, not only is your employment status up for change, but reversal of fortune could occur, which cold facilitate the change in work.   Expect unexpected opportunities to increase finances and gain recognition, to be available throughout this 6 year cycle. Nothing will stay the same, so be prepared for major changes in work, career and finances  during this transit.
SEX: Uranus in Aries will also affect love, until March 7th.  During this time make an effort to smooth over any problems between you and your significant other, because the possibility of separation is likely with this aspect.  At the same time you can also do something different to surprise your partner (in a good way), which will serve to strengthen the bond between you.   Be clear about your intentions/feelings and avoid wanting your own way all the time.    For Single Sagittarius,  unexpected potential lovers come into your life out-of-the-blue, but as suddenly as they come, the could go just as quickly with this aspect and you can expect a lot of ups and downs in love while Uranus is in Aries.
POWER: From a perspective of health, 2019  is a year to be more discriminating about the food you digest.  Listen to your body because it will “tell” you what works and what doesn’t .  A good nutritionist will be of great help throughout the year, once Uranus moves into Taurus and your house of health, work, service to Self and others. Unusual allergies could also be an issue that  seem to manifest out of nowhere. Also try not to overwork, because the stress will affect health and well being.
With Neptune in Pisces, still affecting home, family, foundation of life, anything/anyone that is not conducive to a nurturing environment, will be “dissolved” during this transit   This is a time to visualize the life you want with discernment, working towards making it a reality.    Remember, too, you can’t be all things to all people or keep people in your life that hold you back for moving forward because they are unable to move with you.
Throughout 2019, the Universe is on your side, therefore don’t be afraid to implement

C40 Clean Construction Declaration and Pledge
24 Nov 2020
City Mayors Pledge Sustainable Construction
C40 Cities connects 97 of the world’s greatest cities
Oslo, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Budapest Commit to Clean Construction, Moving the Industry Towards a Sustainable Future
Four leading mayors are initial signatories to C40 Clean Construction Declaration, pledging to work with industry to halve emissions from construction projects in their cities by 2030
Construction is responsible for 23% of the world’s GHG emissions
London, UK (24 November 2020) – Today, the mayors of Oslo, Los Angeles, Mexico City and Budapest have pledged to halve emissions from all construction activities in their cities by 2030, in collaboration with leading companies and innovative business communities.
Through the targets in C40’s Clean Construction Declaration, mayors pledge to revolutionise the global construction industry and shift it towards a more sustainable future, to achieve “a thriving, resilient and healthy life for everyone in our cities, especially our most vulnerable communities.”
The construction industry in its current form is responsible for more than 23% of the world’s GHG emissions and 30% of global resource consumption. If the construction industry continues to take a business as usual approach, the world is on track for a global temperature increase of 3°C.
The Declaration sets bold, ambitious targets to develop the net-zero emission buildings and infrastructure of the future by:
Reducing embodied emissions by at least 50% for all new buildings and retrofits by 2030
Reducing embodied emissions by at least 50% of all infrastructure projects by 2030
Procuring and when possible using only zero emission construction machinery from 2025

Recognising that cities cannot tackle the climate crisis alone, the Declaration places the circular economy as its core and calls for innovation and collaboration across cities, businesses, regional, national and supranational government and industry.
The Declaration commits cities to repurposing and retrofitting building stock to make better use of the buildings and infrastructure that currently exist, which also has huge potential to create new green jobs. Retrofitting reduces the need for raw building materials that have a high carbon footprint — concrete production alone is responsible for 8% of the world’s GHG emissions.
The mayors also commit to lead by example on clean construction, using their purchasing power and normalising the use of zero emission construction machinery, and demanding transparency and accountability in their supply chains. They aim to achieve this by embedding clean construction policies into design and planning, procurement and contracting processes, as well as building codes.
Finally, by signing the Declaration, mayors promise to approve at least one net-zero emission flagship construction project by 2025 and to produce annual reports on their progress.
The mayors’ shared declaration recognises the need for radical change in how cities approach construction. Clean construction principles can deliver a green and just recovery from the COVID-19 crisis; respond to the pressing issue of the climate crisis; improve air quality; and reduce inequality in the world’s cities. If successfully implemented, clean construction will create good, green jobs by investing in local and sustainable businesses and supporting workers. These will be particularly valuable in the recovery from COVID-19 and the associated economic impacts within cities.
The radical collaboration and coalition-building necessary to deliver the Clean Construction Declaration is evidence of the growing impact of C40’s Global Green New Deal coalition, first announced by C40 Chair and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti in October 2019.
Raymond Johansen, Governing Mayor of Oslo, said: “I am proud to announce our firm commitment to collaborate with business and industry to transform construction in Oslo and cities around the world for the better. The climate crisis is a global problem that requires global solutions. We need to unite businesses, industry and government on all levels to advance climate action. We must cut global emissions in half by 2030. The construction sector accounts for up to a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, it must play a key part if we are to reach this goal.
“We are confident that the C40 Clean Construction Declaration will contribute in shifting the construction market globally. Together, we can remove fossil fuels and reduce emissions from construction sites altogether. This will make them safer, quieter, cleaner places to work, and will ensure that the air in our cities is cleaner and healthier to breathe. We challenge the Minister of the Environment to take action and ask cities worldwide to join us”.
Los Angeles Mayor and C40 Chair Eric Garcetti said: “The climate crisis affects every facet of our lives and every sector of our cities – that means we have to fundamentally change the way we operate across the board and revolutionize how we power our neighborhoods, consume natural resources, construct buildings, commute, travel, and lead. With the Clean Construction Declaration, Los Angeles is doubling down on the commitments of our local Green New Deal – and all of the signatories are laying the foundation for sustainable communities, standing up the pillars of green jobs, and drawing the blueprint for a just, healthy, and equitable future.”
Dr. Marina Robles García, Ministry of the Environment, Government of Mexico City, said: “Mexico City has a firm commitment to the best international sustainable building practices, not only because of the need to reduce the impact generated by construction and demolition waste, but also because of the potential in energy efficiency that can be achieved, thereby contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement from the local agenda. ”
Gergely Karácsony, Mayor of Budapest, said: “Budapest is a beautiful and exciting city with an incredible historical heritage and great architecture that we all adore. This, however, means a large building stock with rather poor energy performance and high GHG emissions, which have been worsened by the rapidly increasing traffic during the last couple of years. By declaring a climate emergency as one of our first measures after taking office a year ago, the Municipality of Budapest has committed itself to take active steps to reduce emissions in the city. Embodied emissions in construction activities and materials are uncharted areas, where large mitigation potential can certainly be found. Budapest wants to find its way to mobilise its ecosystem to make significant improvement in this field, which is why the city is delighted to be signing on C40’s Clean Construction Declaration.”
Nigel Topping, UK High Level Climate Action Champion, UNFCCC COP26, said:
“Cities have a vital role to play in accelerating the built environment transition to net zero through policy, influence, collaboration and advocacy for climate action. Committing to the Clean Construction Declaration is a step cities must take to fulfill this role and show leadership through dramatically reducing embodied carbon emissions from buildings and infrastructure. I implore all cities to commit to this declaration!”
Yu Fu, Director of International Cooperation, China Association of Building Energy Efficiency, said: “CABEE is pleased to be working with the C40 Clean Construction Forum to learn more about relevant policies and innovations, particularly as Chinese cities pilot work in this topic area.”
Cristina Gamboa, CEO of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC), said:
“WorldGBC celebrates C40’s Clean Construction Declaration, an extension of our joint Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment / Declaration. Promoting leadership from cities that embrace a whole life-cycle approach is crucial to achieving our unified vision of total decarbonisation of the built environment.
“The Declaration, and the bolder leadership from policymakers behind it regarding their decarbonisation efforts, will create more confidence in the industry to deliver at scale the necessary investments to build back better.”
Lena Hök, Senior Vice President Sustainability, Skanska Group, said: “Skanska has set an ambitious climate target to reach net zero carbon by 2045, including our value chain, and by 2030 we aim to half our emissions. We have a strong will to work towards a more sustainable transition for the entire industry and cooperate with partners to drive sustainability innovations. The commitment from C40 sets a bold directive for this transition enforcing a life cycle approach for greener, healthier and more energy efficient buildings and infrastructure. We look greatly forward to co-operate on this journey together.”
Jocelyn Blériot, Institutions, Governments & Cities Executive Lead, Ellen MacArthur Foundation, said: “A circular economy approach that eliminates waste in all its forms from the built environment can have a significant impact on carbon emissions – whether that is through renewable material selection, modular and flexible design, efficient construction processes, reuse or recycling of building materials, or the increased utilisation of our buildings.
“City governments have a key role to play in this journey, and the Clean Construction Declaration is evidence of city leaders taking bold steps towards shaping a built environment that is resilient, safe, comfortable, cost-effective, and aligned with environmental targets.”
Edward Mazria, CEO and Founder, Architecture 2030, said: “Leading by example, C40’s Clean Construction Declaration and Pledge is central to decarbonizing the built environment and meeting the Paris Climate Agreement’s 1.5°C target.”

The corporate world is obsessed with millennials right now. The generation come-ups with new business ideas every day, and aren’t afraid to express them creatively.
Who are millennial’s?
Is hiring millennial’s a challenge?
Tips for hiring millennial’s
Soft skills to identify in millennial’s
Do’s and Don’ts while hiring millennial’s
Key takeaways for hiring millennial’s
Breaking all the stereotypes of age as a barrier, millennials are outperforming their previous generations. Millennials, known for being bright and adaptive, are changing the corporate culture, and building up a new society full of practical values.
Who are millennial’s?
Millennial’s or so-called the net generation is the individuals who reached adulthood around the turn of the 21st century. According to Newsweek magazine, the millennial’s were born between 1977 to 1994.
Millennial’s are also named as “echo boomers” due to high surge in the birth rate during the 1980’s and the 1990’s. They are best defined as the generation that has seen the birth of technology and has seen the world emerging out of the great recession of 2008.
The research from the Pew Research Center showed millennial’s are more confident, connected, and open to change in comparison to the previous generations.
Is hiring millennial’s a challenge?
No. Millennial’s are no different than humans, but here are few things you need to take care of when hiring millennial’s in the workplace.
#1 Professional Job Offers
When you reach out to millennial’s to offer a job, don’t just give them a list of duties and responsibilities. Millennial’s don’t like bossy attitude they prefer someone who respect their ideas. So, talk about concrete reasons why you chose them in particular and perhaps give them a ballpark salary range as well.
#2 Flexible Work Arrangements
Millennial’s place a high premium on the ability to work from home. According to a survey by Global Workplace Analytics, one third of the surveyed employees preferred telecommuting option over a pay raise. The increasing trend of remote working has been a successful way of employee retention and employee stress management.
#3 Feedback is Important
The LinkedIn’s Talent Trends Report showed, a 95 percent of millennial’s want to hear the feedback about them after the interview. This seems to be a useless effort to follow up on applicants that have been rejected, but they need the feedback so they can improve for future interviews and, perhaps, when the come back to your company so you can make use of their improved skills and knowledge.
#4 Tech genius
Millennial’s are more savvy with internet and emails. While they like keeping chats informal and casual but friendly. Don’t be hesitated of sending text messages instead of emails or formal letters. However, being more flexible and modern will win hearts of millennnial’s.
Millennial’s grew up with more technology than any other generation. Smartphones, social media, texting, email, IM, you name it. That’s how they’re accustomed to communicating, so become proficient in these areas, as well.
With each passing day, Millennial’s contribute a bigger percentage of the overall working class. A 2016 study by the Brookings Institute showed, Millennial’s will comprise more than one of three adult Americans by 2020 and 75% of the workforce by 2025. Clearly, they are not going away. They’ve only just arrived.
The better that you engage them during the hiring process, the better you’ll be able to retain them as employees.
Tips for hiring millennial’s
No hiring millennial’s is not like preparing for civil exam that you need tips to crack, but yes keeping points in mind would attract young and creative mind. These strategies for hiring millennial’s will be an asset for your growing firm.
#1 Set goals
Demonstrate quickly how Millennial’s can make a significant contribution to the job while they’re there, particularly if you can attach some level of social impact or purpose to the job.
If you want to keep people there past one or two years, show how they can make a solid contribution to the job using what they know. Show how what they do can make a financial impact on the company, or a social impact on the community or another stakeholder.
#2 Opportunities for growth
No one wants promotion right after their first day at work, but showing them the opportunities they grow up to can really bring energy in the employees work.
The human desire for growth is perhaps manifested most in the realm of career. Millennial’s care most about the ability to learn and grow as a professional and an individual. Cater to that human desire we all share and see the challenges of hiring millennial’s vanishing away. Offer your employees opportunities for growth at work, and watch your employee engagement and retention grow, too.
#3 Opinion matters
Experiencing the generational gap in opinions at work is not a new thing, but respect others opinion, take them into consideration. Intolerance seems to be the buzzword of the month. But dealing with different views and opinions while still keeping your cool is the mark of a good colleague.
A ‘my-way-or-the-highway’ approach will not get you far up the corporate ladder. Disagreement should never be mistaken for disrespect. People are allowed to disagree with each other, but that doesn’t mean that respect needs to go out the window too.
Soft skills to identify in millennial’s
Millennial’s living in the era of technology are full of wider knowledge and have groomed their personality better than other generations. While you hire millennial’s you experience the wider variety of self groomed soft skills. As a best practice for recruiting millennial’s, it is important that you check those qualities during interview to help you understand the employee better.
#1 Eye contact
Eye contact reflects the confidence of an employee sitting in front of you. In this fast paced world confidence is important to out show your skills. Eye contact should be casual, so it’s okay to have short breaks in contact every now and then, so long as they reconnect with you, especially when you’re talking. That’s a good sign of active listening.
#2 Interruptions
Interrupting a person is often a sign of poor communication skills. Of course, if a candidate keeps talking and talking, you may have to interrupt. Also not a good sign.
#3 Leadership Skills
While millennial’s may not have the desired management experience you would look for in a leader, there are other ways to identify an emerging leader in the hiring process.
If they took initiative, whether they took ownership of their work, how passionate they felt about the project, if they seemed to work well with others, and if they accomplished a successful result.
#4 Critical Thinking
It’s one thing to know that an employee can carry out their responsibilities under normal circumstances, but you also need to feel confident in their ability to perform under pressure.
How they identify challenges, think on their feet, and analyze a complex situation. If they can’t articulate their thought process or sought direction from a 3rd party, they may not be the self-starter that you need in a critical situation.
Do’s and Don’ts while hiring millennial’s
While every generation has a different agenda and motivation, which can sometimes be hard to manage and maintain equality, its important to keep these points in mind while hiring millennial’s.
#1 Emphasize on job stability
Millennial’s have been shown in the light of job hoppers, however, proving it wrong, a study by Deloitte found that millennial’s are willing to stay longer than five years at work.
Millennial’s, expect personal growth, salary, and perks other than job stability. Employers, while hiring, need to build up trust in employees about job stability and healthy work-life balance.
#2 Highlight the opportunity to learn and grow
Everyone wants to learn new things and grow in life. In order to engage people in your business model, you need to know what drives them. So once you have an idea of what can get your employee out of the bed every morning, then yes you have mastered the act of a great employer and you can tailor your communication in a way that resonates with them.
Around 87% per cent of the millennial’s care about career development when evaluating a job, Gallop’s Millennial workforce study showed.
#3 Help settling into the company culture
It’s important to help every new hire settle into your culturally different workplace. A Glassdoor hiring study showed, 80% of millennial’s look for people and culture fit with a new employer.
Work culture is one of the top five considerations for job seekers of all generations while choosing a company. Failing to infuse this culture throughout your hiring process can make you lose many top candidates.
A cohesive work culture attracts the employees towards the organization. Take the opportunity to explore ways of improving work culture and show people what your company culture is like.
#4 Frame millennial-friendly job descriptions
What is a millennial-friendly job description? Well, do you use the same job description for an executive position that you use for a managerial position? No? Exactly the same way, every generation has different expectations from their workplace.
Millennial’s view the company’s benefits package as a key job evaluating factor and when they don’t find the benefits that matter to them, they’re quick to dismiss the job. It’s important to keep healthcare, flexible schedule, student loan repayment, and other personality development benefits in mind while taking millennial’s into consideration.
It is important to pay attention to the benefits packages because when millennial’s get similar offers, these benefits determine the offer they choose. Remember, even the smallest perk can go a long way. A study on PSI online found that the perks and benefits many millennial’s want are inexpensive and sometimes even free.
#5 Unstructured hiring process
Recruitment is a process that everyone should take seriously. Not only because you cannot afford to hire an unqualified or incompetent employee, but also because your hiring process gives a sense to the job-seeker how mismanaged your firm is. This can result in a highly qualified and potential employee turning down your job offer.
Don’t conduct a disoriented recruitment process, distribute roles accordingly for each interviewer and let everyone be ready for their roles.
Everyone makes mistakes at some point, but preparing for it from the start won’t leave anyone embarrassed. A planned execution portrays an organized image of the company and makes the job seeker feel valued giving his time.
Key takeaways for hiring millennial’s
Know the goals of the candidate before hiring.
Drive them through your work culture.
Explain them their duties.
Take their input and give feedback.
Set goals and show the opportunity for growth.
Gain trust with job stability.
The structure of the hiring process is important.
Millennial’s are a great generation of creative people. Every organization wants to hire the right candidates, discussed above are the dos and don’ts you must take care of at all cost when hiring a millennial candidate.
Millennial’s are multi-tasker’s who can do so much beyond their abilities when tested. It is important to enabling them to learn and give them challenging projects to keep them engaged.

How Solar Power is Taking Over in Illinois
For everyone not willing to live the old-fashioned life of candlelight and hand-pumped water, electricity is a necessary evil. You have to have it, but to have it, you have to pay for it.
In the past, short of generating your own power through wind mills or other cumbersome techniques, the only way to receive the electricity necessary to power your home was to attach your house to a utility company’s generator. This made power companies have control similar to a monopoly in their county, governed only by the policies set in place by the state keeping them regulated.
Today, though, home and business owners in Illinois have a choice in how they power their homes. With the innovation of solar technology, clean energy powered by the sun is now affordable and easy to implement regardless of where in the state you live.
In fact, solar energy is not only accessible, it is encouraged by the United States and the government of Illinois. State legislation has solar power on deck for providing hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue each year in the near future. Millions of dollars have been invested to increase the solar industry by job creation and incentives to go solar.
And the Future Energy Jobs Act of 2017 means that solar energy is not going away any time soon. Instead, it has created a positive ripple effect felt all over the state that will also be felt around the world in future generations.
So what exactly is going on in Illinois that makes solar power such a hot topic? Let’s look at a quick rundown of how solar power became so popular in the U.S. first.
The United States is Going Green
Over the last fifty years or so, the U.S. has turned more and more to power generated by renewable resources such as solar energy, wind power, hydroelectricity, and biofuels.
You might find this hard to believe, but even the big city of Las Vegas, Nevada powers all of their municipal buildings and facilities with renewable energy. This includes streetlights, fire stations, service yards, city parks, and anything owned and run by the city. Considering how big Vegas is, this step in getting the city going green saved an exponential amount of money and fossil fuels annually, and the effect will continue for generations to come.
Partnered with energy companies and legislators like these, it’s no wonder that the U.S. is now one of the foremost leaders in renewable energy in the world. The U.S. is determined to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and thereby diminish the greenhouse gas emissions it produces.
But without affordable options to deliver this technology to its users, solar energy was a bust on its initial rollout decades ago. Because it was so cumbersome to produce the technology required to harness solar power and use it in homes, only the wealthiest in the nation were able to afford solar panels.
However, new technology has made solar power not only affordable, but more efficient, streamlined, and aesthetically pleasing. With those excuses out of the way, the United States began a new, more powerful push for everyone to turn to clean energy to power their homes and businesses, and a new era of solar power began.
You are part of this era, which means there has never been a better time to get on board the solar power train. Solar electricity has generated over 50 billion kilowatt hours of clean energy annually, and it’s set to continue to rise.
What Does Solar Power Look Like in Illinois?
The state of Illinois initiated the Future Jobs Energy Act (FJEA) in 2017, considered to be “one of the most significant pieces of energy legislation ever to pass the Illinois General Assembly.” This act is set to create thousands of jobs in the solar industry, train future generations in the importance of clean energy, increase the growth of solar and wind energy in the state, and give hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue to fund low-income programs to get more homeowners access to solar energy.
If you live in Illinois, you have probably heard of the FJEA, or you will soon. It’s becoming a household term. Part of its intent is to reduce electricity waste, therefore decreasing the overall state’s power bills by billions of dollars by 2030. That’s a big promise they want to make good on, and it’s got people talking.
With the amendments to the current Illinois renewable energy laws, this act opens the door for billions of dollars in new investments and programs to create, develop, and produce wind and solar powered programs. It also has created community solar programs, where entire neighborhoods can reap the benefits of solar energy whether or not they have a solar system in their home.
In addition to this groundbreaking piece of legislation, Illinois also has created other policies and laws determined to accelerate solar powered use throughout the state.
Illinois has incorporated a Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS), which in essence requires all utility companies in the state to be sourcing at least 25% of their energy from renewable resources by 2025. There’s also a little caveat in there – called a solar carve out – that stipulates that at least 6% of the 25% has to come from solar power. If they don’t comply with this figure, they face paying a hefty fee to the government as a penalty.
Rather than pay that fee, utility companies have created programs in which they convert your power to renewable energy used by them. In return, you receive compensation for your excess energy.
Illinois is also one of the states that allows net metering. Through this process, your utility company tracks your renewable energy generation and use every month, then carries over your surplus as a credit that goes towards any future utility bills you may incur if your consumption of energy goes over your solar system’s production.
A little side note, though: Those credits are only good for one annual period. You can choose whether your annual period ends in April or October, but if you don’t use them, you lose them. This works in the utility company’s favor and makes them more amenable to net metering use, but if you get the right sized solar system for your home, it’s pretty much a non-issue.
Not every state makes net metering simple, though. To be part of this process, you have to interconnect your solar panels to the grid. This is not a basic matter of hooking up a few cables. You have to comply with dozens of policies and procedures, and some states make this very complicated.
Illinois, with its focus on increasing solar powered homes throughout the state, has made their process for net metering relatively simple and straightforward. As long as you use certified equipment, which reputable installers like us at Nationwide Solar Pro use, you can quickly and easily get on the grid and start reaping the benefits of net metering.
One more thing that Illinois offers that not all states do is Solar Power Performance Payments. To qualify for this, you simply have to generate solar power to the grid. Then you get reimbursed in credits or cash.
When you are generating this power, you receive Solar Renewable Energy Credits, or SRECs, as your proof of generation. Utility companies can purchase these from you if they fall short of their 25% criterion to avoid paying those large fees to the state.
Finally, since solar panels add a decent amount to your home’s property value, it’s important to know that your taxes are going to go up. It was a double-edged sword until the legislature of Illinois stepped in and created a property tax incentive to eliminate this issue. Any registered solar systems are given a value of a conventional energy system, so your property taxes don’t feel that huge hike, but your property value still rises. This lets you sell your home for up to 17% more than fossil-fueled homes!
You Can Reap the Benefits of the Future Energy Jobs Act
This act is causing huge changes across the state of Florida as enough solar energy to power over 450,000 homes is being added over the upcoming years. The state wants energy growth, and they want it today. Rules and regulations are still being discussed, amended, and adjusted again, but each change simply makes it an easier and cleaner process to get to the ultimate goal of 100% clean energy power across the state.
You can see the changes visibly as you drive across the state and watch solar farms cropping up left and right. Solar gardens are in process, and rooftop solar installations are already increasing. The Illinois Commerce Commission has already approved an update that allows utility companies to buy renewable energy credits, so people all over the state are ready to start making this passive income.
You can be a part of it this new generation of clean, efficient solar energy, too. You don’t have to purchase dozens of acres and create a solar farm, but you can contact your local solar installers like us at Nationwide Solar Pros to turn your home away from fossil fuels and towards complete solar powered energy.

The Challenges of Custom Software Development in Western Europe and the USA
Today's software development companies invest a massive amount of time, effort, and capital into developing unique products and services. Why? Because most software solutions within the IT industry are becoming saturated with similar products.
This is an extremely competitive space, and software companies have no choice but to build custom software that's tailored to the needs of individual customers, or types of customer. The need for custom software development is only becoming more pressing into 2019.
Tumblr media
What is custom software development?
For decades, companies have used off-the-shelf software and hardware: ready-made products designed for integration into existing systems. Microsoft Office is a great example of a universal, off-the-shelf commercial software that's packaged up nicely, ready for any company in the world to use it.
While off-the-shelf software has proved invaluable in the past, IT businesses have become more complex. Companies are offering highly-specific solutions to address unique requirements - and that's where custom development comes into the picture.
Simply put, custom software development is fully adapted for the specific needs and requirements of one group of users. Customers not only get complete ownership over this product, but they can also request extensions or additional features by coordinating with the developers.
If you've ever tried convincing Microsoft to add a new feature, you'll know what a significant advantage this can be!
Why aren't all businesses developing custom products?
Put simply, it's not an easy job and there are quite a few challenges down that path.
A shortage of talented developers
The fact that developers are in demand is no secret: research conducted by the App Association shows that nearly a quarter of a million software engineering jobs in the US remain unfilled.
Tumblr media
The question is - why? According to reports, the US only produces 35,000 computer science graduates every year. At this pace, it would take at least 8 years to fill the open positions. The UK software industry needs 1.8 million trained engineers by 2025.
There just aren't enough software developers coming into the industry. The situation with employed developers isn't much better: they regularly work 60+ hours a week, sometimes with impossible deadlines, just to keep up with the workload. It can be a demanding industry.
Programming custom software requires long hours of intense concentration, dedication, and of course consummate skill. However, there are now far fewer senior developers available than the number of companies looking for them!
Tumblr media
Modern tech stacks can be quite complex: the wide array of frameworks available today are typically not taught in formal education. So when companies take on green developers without that broader-world experience, it can take them a lot longer to hire the right people to build a quality product.
High cost of operations
Hiring top-quality engineers - the kind that can build effective custom software - doesn't come cheap.
First things first, the average salary of an experienced engineer in the US is roughly $100,000. That's fairly expensive. To gain access to talented engineers in the first place, you need to engage with  recruitment agencies whose fees are typically 20-25% of the developer's annual salary. And of course there's all the secondary costs of taking on new employees: office space, equipment, training, benefits and so on.
If you're a tech company looking for a good software solution, it is significantly easier and cheaper to just buy something off-the-shelf. You might have to adapt your processes to make it work, but the custom route just can't be justified by most organisations.
Other options for building custom software
Outsourcing
If we rule out building an in-house team, some companies will instead draw up rough plans and outsource development to specialists. If this is an established software company, then it'll probably work out fine, if a bit expensive.
The problem is that when most businesses turn to outsourcing, they're turning to the cheapest labour they can find. These developers will have neither the customer focus nor the technical skill to build a reliable product, nor are their deliverables up to the mark.
Tumblr media
According to the Project Management Institute (see the figure below), only 70% of outsourced projects meet their intended goals. The rest are either not completed on time, overshoot the budget, or simply fail.
Price is always the deciding factor with outsourcing. In many cases it delivers poor results and is rarely sustainable beyond one-off, isolated projects.
Tumblr media
Offshoring
One alternative is to invest in an offshore development team: a handpicked team of engineers who are employed full-time by your company, but based 'offshore' in another country.
You might think that if finding good developers in the US or the UK is difficult, then moving further abroad will be even harder. Turns out, it's quite the opposite.
India produces roughly 1.5 million engineers every year - a number that is unrivalled across the globe. Not only that, but these engineers are highly-trained, experienced, and fluent in English. Because the talent pool is so huge and largely untapped, you're guaranteed to find the skills you need in these young tech economies.
Tumblr media
Cost is still a factor here. After all, all the associated costs of hiring new staff are lower in India - it's a huge attraction. What separates this from outsourcing, however, is that the emphasis is still on top-quality developers.
No matter how skilful and talented an Indian developer is, they'll still cost a lot less than their equivalent in the US. It's not a reflection of ability or experience, but rather a substantially lower cost of living.
By partnering with an offshore software development company that takes care of the recruitment process on your behalf, you might find building custom software is a whole lot easier than you first thought!
If you're new to the concept of offshore software development, you can check out our blog post: The 2019 Guide to Offshore Development Services, which highlights everything that you need to know about offshore development, specifically in India.
Custom software development can be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be.
If you have any questions about offshoring or building software for your business, you can hop on a call with one of our senior executives and talk through them whenever suits you.

Why Boomers can't talk about the 'R' word
One reason is a bloke who lives nearby. I don't know him well we've never got much past banal chats about the weather or footy but he hasn't had a job for a few years. I suspect he might have been "let go". Or simply retired. He appears a bit lost, like a man chasing things to do. His bins go out earlier than before. Takes his time over domestic chores. He grew a beard, too, which was a mistake. It's all grey. Makes him look much older than he is. Like a slimmed-down Hemingway. Seeing him, I've opted to keep shaving. Then there's the man I'll call Gary, with whom I worked over several decades. I left; he stayed. I caught up with him a while back. He said he felt under pressure at work and was taking medication for stress. The job was killing him. He had to get out. He did, months later. Then I saw him again at the funeral of another former colleague. He'd put on weight. His face looked puffy. Asked about life since escaping the office grind, Gary replied: 'I don't know what to do now. Wonder if I made a hideous mistake.' Asked about life since escaping the office grind, Gary replied: "I don't know what to do now. Struggle to find reasons to get up. Wonder if I made a hideous mistake." This felt like another warning. Was this what happens when you move from full-time work to no work at all, or bits and pieces of stuff you call work? Is this what retirement looks like? A financial guy had already talked me into a transition-to-retirement scheme. I'd focused on the transition, not the r-word. Skimmed over the bit where a payment was called a pension. But the fact was I'd gradually moved transitioned from a Monday-to-Friday job to a four-days-a-week-job, then to several smaller jobs, not all of which involved earning money. During the four-day phase, Wednesdays were mine. For dog walks. Swims. Shopping. Cooking. Stuff. I loved Wednesday. It was a peaceful island in the midst of a fast-running river I had to cross every week. A place to take stock and not answer calls. But maybe Wednesdays were special because of what came before and after. If I had a week of Wednesdays, things would seem different. I could end up with a bad case of the Garys. Perhaps I'm being unfair to him. It's possible he was just having a bad day at the funeral, which was a shocker. Too long, too many speeches, and a prevailing sense that we were there for a popular man who'd had a heart attack while riding his bike with mates. He was 51. Much younger than me. And still 14 years off what used to be set in stone as retirement age. That's how it was: you hit 65, retired, went off and played golf or got a caravan. Or a Winnebago, like Jack Nicholson's character in the 2002 movie About Schmidt, which explores what happens to Warren Schmidt after he retires from an insurance company. Early scenes show Schmidt counting down the last hour of employment and enduring awkward speeches at his office farewell. Then he's hit by a double-whammy: the sudden loss of his wife and a lack of purpose. He takes off, alone, in the Winnebago, in what becomes a kind of oldies' road movie. It makes poignant viewing now. Nicholson's last film came out in 2010. Since then, rumours have swirled about his health. In 2013, he told Vanity Fair he didn't consider himself retired, just less driven. Appropriately, About Schmidt came out the year Nicholson turned 65 the age still linked with the r-word. It's actually an outdated historical construct.
Tumblr media
Appropriately, the film "About Schmidt" came out the year its star, Jack Nicholson, turned 65 the age still linked with the r-word.Credit:Alamy In Australia, a government-funded retirement pension dates back to 1909, when it was paid to men from the age of 65. For women, the magic age was 60, from 1910. These pensions, to support ageing victims of tough times from the 1890s, included income and residency tests. They didn't represent a crushing burden for the government, as just 4 per cent of the population was over 65. Life expectancy was about 55 for men, 59 for women. Today, by contrast, about 15 per cent of Australians are over 65 and life expectancy has leapt to about 80 for men and 85 for women. For any budget-conscious government, that represents plenty of potentially costly retirees. And they can be a cranky lot. Hence Prime Minister Scott Morrison's backdown late last year on the Abbott-era plan, from 2014, to increase the pension age from 67 to 70, starting in 2025. Steady increases in age eligibility would have seen it hit 70 by 2035. This was portrayed as a move by penny-pinching politicians to force honest folk to scrap retirement plans and work until they dropped. Doing his man-of-the-people impression, Deputy PM Michael McCormack told Sky News: "If you're a tradie or a brickie or a shearer in rural and regional Australia, you don't want some suit in Canberra telling you you've got to work until you're 70." Absolutely not. Labor didn't protest about this as much as might have been expected, because it was under then prime minister Kevin Rudd in 2009 that the pension age was lifted from 65 to 67 (from 2017). Rudd's treasurer, Wayne Swan, acknowledged the move would never be popular, but justified it by saying Australia faced a "demographic time bomb". An estimated 22 per cent of the population will be over 65 by 2057. The Council on the Ageing (COTA) says 7.9 million Australians, almost a third of the population, are currently aged 50 or above. Of these, 29 per cent of those still working think they'll never retire. Not surprisingly, it also found that "the expected age of retirement increases as household income level decreases". The importance of financial security becomes clear when I type the words "Retirement in Australia" in the online catalogue for the local library. The first entries include books about the future of property investing and keeping your self-managed superannuation fund simple. These books, not to mention Enjoying Retirement, The Retirement Living Handbook and Women and Retirement ("Challenges of a new life phase") are also popular. Most are already out on loan, with at least one reserve in place. Which is understandable. It makes financial sense to borrow a book instead of buying it. And libraries are popular with older people. Then again, how old is old?
Tumblr media
Hillary Clinton was 69 when she ran for the US presidency in 2016.Credit:AAP Turning 50 is the first tipping point, a convenient age for headhunters making shortlists shorter, or managers trimming staff numbers. It's when you're over 50 that you start to receive brochures about investments, superannuation choices and that once-faraway place called retirement. Not 60, when you may find yourself eligible for a Seniors Card (a tad embarrassing, but fabulous for cut-price public transport). Or 67 (thanks, Mr Swan), when perhaps you'll put your hand up for a pension. It's 50. Ridiculous. Ken Rosewall was still winning matches in tennis tournaments in the early 1980s, just a few years shy of 50. And the three main contenders in the 2016 US presidential election Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders were aged 70, 69 and 75 respectively. None are considered retirees.
Tumblr media
Donald Trump was the oldest person to assume the office of US president, being 70 years, 220 days at his inauguration.Credit:AAP The retirement age, incidentally, varies considerably around the world. In Japan, which has the world's highest average life expectancy (just under 84), incentives may be offered to people to postpone a state pension until 70. In Brazil, the average retirement age is 56 for men, 53 for women. Brazil has generous pensions and a debt crisis. In France, the retirement age has been moved from 60 to 62; in Germany, it's 65 and seven months.
Tumblr media
Royal Commissioner Kenneth Hayne. Just as the pension age is less fixed than it used to be, so is the concept of retirement. The titular character in About Schmidt struggles to adapt. All those years behind an actuary's desk were not fun, but what now? And why is it that some capable people still face compulsory retirement? Kenneth Hayne, who turns 74 in June, demonstrated impressive vigour and acuity heading the recent banking royal commission. He was able to take that on because he was deemed too old to continue sitting as a Justice of the High Court. Hayne had to retire from that job in 2015. Since a constitutional amendment in 1977, members of the Australian federal judiciary must retire at 70. The last judge not affected by this provision, having been appointed in 1976, was Justice Graham Bell. He retired from the Family Court of Australia in early 2015, aged 78, and took a swing at the new law on the way out: "These days, 70 is equal to 60 or 55 Judges should be able to go on till 80 provided they pass a medical inspection They are sent out to pasture too early."
Tumblr media
Ruth Bader Ginsburg serves as a Justice of the US Supreme Court at age 86.Credit:AAP Three of the nine serving Justices of the US Supreme Court, including the legendary Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 86, would be gone if the US had a similar law. Here, it means that Geoffrey Nettle, who became a High Court judge in 2015 at the age of 64 (the oldest-ever appointee), will hit the mandatory retirement age in late 2020. He will serve a maximum term of just under six years, which seems a waste of a fine legal mind. It's possible we've been looking at all this the wrong way around. Instead of designating a retirement age, perhaps the question should be: how young can you get away with it? The devotees of a mantra called FIRE Financial Independence, Retire Early are reshaping ideas of what early retirement looks like. Forget your 60s; their goal is to bail out in half that time, or, in the case of J.P. Livingston, in your 20s. Instead of designating a retirement age, perhaps the question should be: how young can you get away with it? "I retired in New York City with just over $2.25 million when I was 28," she says on her website, The Money Habit. "I wholeheartedly believe that anyone can retire decades earlier than their peers." The secret, she says, lies in financial planning. (Luck and a solid financial base also help.) The FIRE movement started in the US but has since spread globally through myriad blogs and websites. A father figure is Jacob Lund Fisker, a Danish former nuclear astrophysicist, whose Early Retirement Extreme blog began in 2007. Fisker summarises his philosophy as "a combination of simple living, anti-consumerism, DIY ethics, self-reliance, resilience, and applied capitalism". The baton has now been passed to Peter Adeney, a Canadian. Writing as Mr Money Mustache, Adeney's ideas about very early retirement, which he achieved in 2005, age 30, gained so much traction that The New Yorker magazine profiled him in 2016. "Retirement, in his hands, is a slippery term," Nick Paumgarten wrote. "It doesn't mean playing golf or sitting on the porch. It is merely the freedom to do what he wants when he wants He disdains the idea of spending another minute of his life in a cubicle in order to afford a dryer or a Tesla." The profile described Adeney using a woodworking vice to squeeze limes. His wife, Simi, was quoted as saying: "I've gotten used to it all, but he's a weird dude." Maybe too weird. Last year, a Guardian article about the FIRE movement noted Adeney's influence but reported: "He and his wife divorced recently." Apostles of FIRE have firm ideas about what life should look like and it doesn't include employers. (Children are seldom mentioned, either.) Many have come from the financial or technology sectors and are resting on a solid base. It takes money to make money, or even save money. And as appealing as the idea of ditching a boss in your 30s may be, the question, even more daunting than for someone in their 60s, is the same: what's next? As nice as the idea of ending work in your 30s may be, the question, even more daunting than for 60somethings, is the same: what's next? For J.P. Livingston, "a successful and happy retirement is about changing chapters rather than one static image of constant adrenaline and adventure". But Fisker could be running out of steam. In February, he diverted blog visitors to Bertrand Russell's 1932 essay In Praise of Idleness. Russell is an unlikely poster boy for early retirement. He died aged 97 and was still writing into his final years. Anne Moore would love to follow suit. A social scientist and entrepreneur, she tells me from her Sydney office how she started a software business "at 57, mid-career". Later, she founded PlanDo, which offers career coaching and advocates embracing the idea that careers are no longer linear starting with a junior role and ending at 65 with farewell handshakes. She talks of the much-hyped "gig economy". "People don't retire any more," she argues. "They are working into their 70s." Or longer. Like many women, Moore juggled different sorts of work with raising a family. She thinks the random, disjointed careers familiar to women may become the norm for everyone. Retirement, she insists, "was never, ever on my horizon. I come from a working-class background and always had a strong work ethic. Just as the idea of being a young stay-at-home mum was never attractive, it never occurred to me that I would retire." Work, she says, can inform a sense of identity; can even be noble. The quest is to find work paid or otherwise that is purposeful and fulfilling. And it means thinking about work in different ways.

ABC newsreader Ian Henderson was happy to retire at 65.Credit:ABC Despite the rigidity applied to judges, ideas about retirement are, as Moore suggests, becoming more fluid. And I'm not the only one who resists the r-word. ABC Radio's Jon Faine recently announced that this year would be his last behind the microphone in Melbourne. He told a caller who rang to lament his pending departure, "I'm not retiring. I'm just going to be doing other things." Faine, now 62, says of his decision to move on: "Inside my head it is very important. I hope to still stay engaged, useful and busy, but not in an all-consuming job like this." I've heard many people ranging from cricketer Mitchell Johnson to former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett express variations of the same sentiment: once you start talking or thinking about retirement, you've already gone. We all thought Malcolm Turnbull was gone when he was deposed as prime minister last August. He even suggested he might go quietly. Then he went to New York. When he returned in October, he declared: "I'm not engaged in politics any longer. I'm retired." Hmmm, maybe At least Turnbull didn't shy away from the r-word. Another who didn't was Faine's former colleague Ian Henderson. Late last year, at the traditional age of 65, the Victorian TV newsreader declared that after 38 years at the ABC, it was time to embark upon "a long-hatched retirement plan". A key component was "a bush block; a couple of acres to play with". He calls me from there to discuss his new life. He'd talked of retirement, he says, because it was something people could grasp onto and understand. "I was informed partly by memories of my own father, who retired at 65," says Henderson. "He was a commercial traveller, a Depression boy; got one job and stuck with it. By the time he got to retiring, he was very much over work. I think he saw ahead a golden age that was perhaps not quite realised ... His idea of renewal was to build a dream home, something he did twice. He withdrew from the community, became quite isolated. To me, that was something of a cautionary tale." I was conscious that I needed a few things to fill the void; occupy myself. But it's also good to survey the horizon, see what's out there. At the bush block, Henderson says, "there's no shortage of projects; [my wife] Susie and I are consumed by them." So too, their adult children. There's a tiered organic vegie garden. And he's taken up baking bread. "I was conscious that I needed a few things to fill the void; occupy myself. But it's also a good idea to survey the horizon and see what's out there." Since he left the newsroom he's been spotted back at the ABC, doing some work for Catalyst. So has he un-retired? No. "When I stopped, I did not rule out dabbling in other projects. But I was not looking at a second career. My criteria for new things are that they are interesting, worthwhile and fun." The Catalyst project, which involved chatting to centenarians with a strong sense of purpose, ticks all those boxes. I'd thought he might fit the old stereotype of retirement: out at 65 to play golf. Hendo loves his golf. A knee problem, however, has restricted his time on the course since he stopped reading the news. Still, he declares himself "soooo busy there often aren't enough hours in the day". Later, he sends a photo of his tomato plants. With a caption: "My Babies". Some women like Sally, whom I've known for more than 40 years choose to reshape their lives. She did this once before, moving from the corporate world to a career teaching English as a second language at a high school. She stopped doing that around the time she turned 60. "If pressed, I would say that I'm retired in one sense of the word. But I'd rather say I'm just living in a different way. I've not withdrawn but restarted." I'm retired in one sense of the word. But I'd rather say I'm just living in a different way. I've not withdrawn but restarted. She expands on the theme: "I still derive an income, but not through recognisable activity what some call work. My income tax statement looks different. I still have goals and monitor my own performance. I am making different types of connections with people whom I wouldn't call colleagues or friends, but who share similar interests. I describe myself as 'occupied' rather than busy, because busy is a state I was constantly in as a teacher for 13 years. "I occupy myself now with activities which are of my choosing, including new activities for fun and out of curiosity. I have time now although I haven't fully capitalised on it yet for listening to more classical music, reading more widely and broadening my exposure to culture." She's working on a family-history writing project. She's tried ballet. ("It's meant to be an absolute beginners' class, but no way are they all beginners. Especially that 11-year-old with her hair in a bun, a pink tutu and pointe shoes!") And she's considering a beginners' hip-hop class. "I am having fun and have absolutely no regrets." American futurist Glen Hiemstra addresses the "what next?" question in this way: "The first quarter of the 21st century will see a great reinvention of the third phase of life, away from classic retirement and towards something like 'life fulfilment'. The end of retirement and beginning of life fulfilment may be a kind of liberation." Or, as an ad puts it: Shouldn't your retirement be the start of something new? Sure. But what, exactly? There are all kinds of possibilities and no simple solutions. In search of answers, or perhaps just some interesting questions, I enrolled in philosophy classes early in my not-retired life. I ended up doing two terms, which seemed like enough when Rudyard Kipling's poem If was wheeled out for inspiration. The classes taught me the value of pausing; of taking time out, even for just a few minutes, to dwell on the moment. And I liked the notion that anxiety can simply mean thinking about the future. Wondering, and often worrying, about what may lie ahead. I never told the Tuesday-night tennis guys that, for much of one year, my Wednesday nights yes, Wednesday, once my special day were occupied pondering topics like The Power of Beauty. I have lunch with Michael the lawyer in the city, not far from his office. He can't recall me losing my cool over his repeated jabs about "retirement". That's not surprising: it was some time ago. It also confirms that the incident meant more to me than him. He agrees the concept of retirement has changed dramatically since we both started working in the 1970s. It's something he's pondered, too. A few years ago, he was politely nudged out the door of the big law firm where he'd been a partner. Experience can matter less than billable hours. He faced an unsettling period that left him convinced he wasn't ready to walk away. So he sucked it up and moved on. Talked to people. Got offers from smaller, more flexible law firms. He's doing fine. When he insists on buying lunch, I protest, politely, then wonder if he reckons I can't be earning much in my new life. Stop it, I tell myself, you're being too sensitive again. Later, I send a thank-you message and can't resist two last questions. Can he imagine retiring? And what would that look like? "No," he replies. "I think 'retire' will likely exit my and others' lexicon. We will all just gradually wind down work, tennis, our social lives and everything else, until we fade away." I tell him I hope this will be no time soon. "Fading away" is another type of transition; something more unsettling than what we've known. Perhaps we can keep talking about this at tennis again next Tuesday night. To read more from Good Weekend magazine, visit our page at The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and Brisbane Times.
