Magnificent Scoundrels- Battle Above the Citadel

While the battle on the ground rages on, the battle in space is a bit more... lopsided. This me giving you the contents of a space battle and how the different factions operate. Hope you like it.

“There is nothing as beautiful and deadly as a battleship’s broadside.”

Aboard the Chimaera

Captain Faro paced on the sleek black deck of the Chimaera’s bridge. Her gloved hands clasped neatly behind her back, green uniform immaculately pressed, and brown hair pulled back into a neat ponytail, she was every inch the model Imperial Navy officer, inside and outside. Grand Admiral Thrawn had personally chosen her to command his ship after his elevation to the rank of Admiral, and she had not let him down once. Today would be no exception.

The chatter of various deck officers, stationed below her, reached her ears. The attacking fleet was within range. She allowed herself a small smile. Good.

“TIEs are to retain holding patterns around the fleet. I do not want them out there unsupported,” she said. The TIE Wing Commander nodded his ascent.

“Yes, Captain,” he replied. She turned to the other divot in the command deck where additional officers were stationed.

“Gunnery Officer?”

“Yes, Captain?”

“Are the main batteries in range,” she asked. Of course, she already knew the answer.

“Yes, Captain,” saluted the Gunnery Officer. She gave a slight nod.

“You may fire when ready.” Nothing more was needed from her. Both she and Thrawn ran a tight ship. The comms chatter of the gunnery officers and mates reached her ears.

“Main batteries in range,” reported the Gunnery Chief of the four massive starboard turbo-laser batteries.

“You may fire when ready,” replied the Gunnery Officer.

“Secondary batteries in range,” reported a Gunnery Mate.

“You may fire when ready.” Not a single ounce of emotion in the Gunnery Officer’s voice. Faro nodded her approval.

“Tertiary batteries in range.”

“Hold fire until you reach optimal range.”

“Point defense batteries out of range.” No surprise there. Not a single ship of the attack fleet seemed to want to close distance with the three massive Star Destroyers. Pity, actually. Then again, no sane commander of a capital ship would ever want to go broadside to broadside with an Imperial Star Destroyer… Faro was snapped out of her tangent by the voice of the Gunnery Chief over the comms.

“Starboard turbo-lasers: commence firing. Target: frigate-class ship designate target delta five-zero-oh.”

The four massive turrets rotated slightly in their stations, locking on to a pitifully small ship in the distance. Captain Faro felt her pulse rise slightly. There was nothing, nothing, that could compare to the full might of a Destroyer’s guns tearing into enemies.

With a suddenness that astounded, the turbo-lasers spat green bolts of death into the void. The four gun barrels of each turret fired only once, as the bolts travelled with a speed that astounded to their targets. They passed through the frigate’s shields as if they did not exist, straight through the ship’s sturdy armor plating, and blew it apart. There was no need for a second volley. The frigate ceased to exist with only one.

Faro sighed to herself. This was unbecoming of a Destroyer Captain of her stature. Swatting flies with guns powerful enough to melt moons. Ridiculous. Still, it was what Grand Admiral Thrawn commanded, and so it was done without question or hesitation.

Aboard the Enterprise

Spock watched with fascination as the combined fleets of the various governments present at the Citadel engaged the enemy. It was… ridiculously easy, to put it bluntly. This mass of disorganized attackers in all sorts of mis-matched ships were no contest for the pride of at least fifteen galaxy-spanning navies. He only gave the occasional command to the bridge crew. They did their jobs well; not much need for direction. What he was interested in was how each of the different navies fought and how their starships worked.

He saw the Normandy zip through space with all the elegance of a fighter craft. Sleek and elegant, it fired a twin pair of cannons mounted beneath the hull, promptly vaporizing an attacking ship. The navies of the Citadel races kept their distance, using tactics similar to Starfleet ones. Spock nodded his silent approval. The weapons from this galaxy were all railgun types, if, of course, a railgun could ever describe something as sophisticated and powerful as an Element Zero mass-driven weapon. From what Spock understood, they used this Element Zero to propel small particles at astounding speeds, quite similar in theory as a railgun. Their ships, thus, used massive kinetic barrier shields, designed to stop physical projectiles.

That particular type of shielding came at a massive disadvantage when facing the heavy laser batteries of Imperial and New Republic ships, though. The weapons from that particular galaxy all used ionized gasses to create powerful lasers, which completely ignored physical shields. Spock winced as the main batteries of the Chimaera fired, promptly vaporizing a fair sized attacking starship. The two were distinctly different, he mused, with one using all physical weapons and the other using only energy weapons. The shields of the vessels from that galaxy were only designed to stop energy weapons, something that came back to bite them when the heavy guns of one of the larger attacking ships scoured twin holes in the flank of a Destroyer. Didn’t put it out of commission, though. You’d need a lot more firepower to do that.

The starships of the UNSC, Galactic Assembly and the singular Apocalypse seemed to operate on very similar principles. They had physical shields, and the ships from both galaxies used long range rail- and coil-guns in tandem with heavy missile batteries. Not quite as effective as the massive turbo-lasers at blowing the hell out of genetically-shielded starships, but it worked.

Then, of course, there was the Watch Eternal. Unlike the sleek and lighting-quick ships of the Citadel, or the technological masterworks of the Starfleet, or the heavy energy weapons of the New Republic or the Galactic Empire, or, even, the balanced yet deadly payloads of the UNSC, GA, or Merchant's Guild, the massive, cathedral-like behemoth operated on one principle, and one principle only: sheer, unaldurated power. There were no quirks, no tactics, no maneuverability, only power on a level that simply astounded the Enterprise’s First Officer. He had watched all the different ships of the allied fleets, taking readings from all of them and observing what they could do. When the Eternal had raised shields, several of the bridge crews’ mouths had dropped open. The wattage that had gone into those shields was more than some of the Starfleet ships could get from their reactors, period. The shields themselves were not sleek, or designed to hug every curve of the ship. Instead, they were a massive bubble of energy, projected into the space around the ship, designed to deflect physical projectiles, energy projectiles, and enemy sensor readings alike. Spock looked over at the belfries and massive Aquilia statues with distaste. He did not like the ship, nor the government it was in service to, but he could not deny it was, in a brutish, barbarian way, very deadly.

Aboard the Watch Eternal

Captain Striecher sat on his command throne, as he had every day for the past five decades. His physical body had almost wasted away, only surviving through the nutrients he took in from the tubes connecting him to the ship. His physical body, however, did not matter. His mind could see every system, every weapon, every inch of the mighty starship’s systems and control them with merely a thought. He was in his element.

Void shields online. Long range macro-cannons online and operating at full capacity. Point defense macro-cannons online and operating at full capacity. Starboard broadside lance batteries online and fully operational. Port broadside lance batteries online and fully operational. Forward heavy lances online and fully operational. Torpedoes loaded. Heavy missile batteries online, loaded, and locked onto targets. Underside macro-cannons, torpedo tubes, and lance batteries online and ready for orbital bombardment. He took in all of this at once, and discarded it. The Inquisitors wanted something more than the simple destruction of the attacking fleet. They wanted information.

Striecher mentally activated the multi-faction comms channel that the Scoundrels were oh-so helpful to set up.

“All ships, this is the Watch Eternal. Do not fire upon the flagship of the attacking fleet. That one is ours,” he commanded. His voice was the one part of his body that he did not allow to wither. He still needed it. A chorus of acknowledgements came through the channel, some rather confused. It didn’t matter. No one would fire on the cruiser that served as the attacking fleet’s flagship.

Deep in the bowels of the massive ship, Watch Captain Kaes and his Kill Team stood in the teleportarium. A dozen serfs and tech-priests tended to the esoteric machines in the room. The lighting was dim, but such trivialities did not bother the transhuman super-soldiers of the Deathwatch or their augmented servants.

“We teleport in, get the data from the enemy flagship’s cognators, as per the Inquisitors’ instructions, then teleport out. Anyone aboard the ship is to be terminated on sight. Clear?” The room shook with the acknowledgements of a dozen voices, amplified through their power armor.

“Clear!”

“Good.” The Captain turned to the lead tech-priest. “Magos. We stand ready.” The blank faceplate of the techpriest nodded back.

“May the Omnissiah bless your endeavour.” The priest (Kaes couldn’t tell if it was originally a man or woman beneath the robes and augmetics and suspected it didn’t really matter) turned and flipped a heavy switch. “Stand by to teleport.”

Aboard the Beyond

Captain Melos chewed his lower lip nervously as he watched the attack fleet, his fleet, get completely annihilated. He was chosen to lead this assault, and, dammit, he was failing. The Beyond was a powerful cruiser, built in secret, thought to be powerful enough to lead the assault force to take on the Citadel Fleet. Only, the Fleet had been beefed up by Commander John bloody Shepard. Even then, he might have confused them enough to have the ground agents on the Citadel take over, but no. There were at least thirty starships that could match or outgun his beloved Beyond, not counting the trimultive of triangular super-dreadnaughts or the utterly massive cathedral… thing. Dammit.

Melos’s fleet was in ruins. He would not be pleased. Melos didn’t know what he would tell him. Hopefully he would be merciful… but mercy wouldn’t count for much if Melos was dead in the first place. He was about to turn to his crew, to tell them to get out of Citadel space, when a strange feeling overtook him. It was like the pressure before a thunderstorm, only much, much worse. Several of his lieutenants blinked heavily or clutched their heads at the unexpected feeling, seeking to dispel it. It lasted only for a moment, then…

A massive crack of displacing air sounded, and suddenly, there was a group of giants in their midst. At least eight feet tall, they all wore heavy black armor and clutched various, utterly terrifying weapons. Red lenses swept the bridge crew for a moment, and, before anyone could react, the giants lept into action. Two leapt left, two right, moving faster than anything that big had any right to. They lashed out with swords of all things, energy fields crackling around blades and horrible chain-teeth whirring. The bridge crew died in seconds, completely unprepared for an attack of this sort.

Melos took all this in with horror, then realized the leader of the terrible giants, wearing a cloak and much more ornate armor, was stepping towards him. He whimpered, and tried to take a step back, but his legs failed him as he stood there, terrified beyond belief.

Watch Captain Kaes disdained to use the colossal halberd in his right hand, instead picking up the captain of the ship with his massive left gauntlet. He squeezed, crushing the man’s head as easily as a normal human crushing an aluminum can. He sighed to himself. Too easy. Several shots sounded behind him as his rear guard gunned down a few crewmen trying to make it to the bridge. He nodded at another Marine, this one with several robotic arms hanging from a pack on his back.

“Won’t take but a second, Watch Captain,” said the Marine, moving up to the ship’s computers. The Captain and the men who had slaughtered the bridge crew waited, impassive in their armor, as their technological expert’s gauntlets flew across the computer keys, muttering about “bloody mortals and their too-small holographic keyboards.” Twenty seconds and none dead crew members later, the tech expert nodded.

“We’re good to go,” he stated as he walked up to the Captain.

“Brothers,” said the Captain, and the rest of the Marines stood next to him, the rear guard’s weapons still pointed at the bridge exit where a few crew members cowered out of line of sight.

“Magos. Our mission is complete. Ready to teleport,” said the Captain. In lieu of a response, the Marines vanished in a thunderclap of dissipating air, their mission complete. The mighty guns of the Watch Eternal erased any trace of their presence as red beams struck the Beyond, vaporizing it. The Inquisitors would be most intrigued to see inside information on how this galaxy operated.

Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard were known in the youtube community as the dynamic cousin duo,when Anne first started out. With Katherine behind the scenes and Anne on the screen, they made their name. No one really knew the reason behind the cousin,but it worked out for them. Even when Katherine moved onto her own channel, and made a name of her own, she still stayed with Anne. To Anne, Katherine was her little cousin who she needed to protect, and to Katherine, Anne was her mentor and guardian who she could rely on. All in all, they see each as family in thick and thin, and that's what really mattered to the both of them.

The video pans to the main members of The Palace currently seated in their living room with Anne, Anna, and Parr on the couch and the others on stools behind them.

“Hello my fellow queens, kings, princes, princesses, and everyone in between. I’m Anne and you're watching Disney channel” The queens laugh at the small quip except Aragon who just rolls her eyes. Anne motions to the 6 boxes on the table while continuing, “Anyways, since World Heritage Day is coming up, we decided to do a DNA to look into our own heritage and to prove I’m not a gremlin”

“ Annie, at this point you have to accept that gremlin part of you, just like I do.” Katherine says.

“There’s even a movie about it. You might be in it” Cathy adds to the blow as Anne wipes fake tears. “As hurtful as that was to hear, today we will be using the service of 23&Me for our testing. Personally I know my family heavily lived in France and spent some time in England.”

“Pure-blood German, born and raised,but I may have some Russia and Dutch in me”

“If Spain doesn’t show on my test,I’m just gonna sue and get my money back. Otherwise I’m Spanish,as well as Romanian”

“My family were from France and Italy before they moved to the countryside of the UK before my immediate family moved to America”

Both Cathy and Kat hesitate to go next,but after a few seconds Cathy decides to go. “ I know my mother had some relation to Spain, and that the rest of my family I’m unsure of. I think mainly from northern Europe,but don’t quote me on that”

“Same thing with me. I’m not really sure where my family is from,but I know I same some relation to France because of Anne’s side” Kat turns to Parr, and leans down to give her a gentle hug “But I wouldn’t worry too much, we’ll figure it out”

The video continues with Aragon and Jane explaining how the test works and how it can affect ancestors, relatives, and diseases that are connected to your DNA just through some saliva. The queens do the process of spitting into tubes, some preferably doing it off camera.(Anna started choking at one point) Parr ends the test part of the video by explaining that in a few weeks ,they will get their results. The video skips to a break snake with Aragon and Maria break-dancing,with beat-boxing provided by Anne and Kat, with the caption ‘A few weeks later’.

“Welcome back everyone, it is currently...” Parr looks off camera”around 2 am, and we have gotten our results”.

The camera zooms out to show the queens in the same spots as before with their laptops, or phones with them. They are all currently wearing their pajamas. Each one of them take turns looking at each of their results. Kat and Anne get excited when Kat finds out she actually has some background in France. Cathy also finds out she has a mixture of countries in northern Europe. The mood does dim when the test says that there is a chance of cancer for Catherine and Anna,but after a few jokes and quips, the mood lightens once again.

“Kat, Jane, are you getting this as well?” Anne turns her laptop to them and the camera shows ‘Jane Seymour’ as 2nd cousin and ‘Katherine Howard’ as 1st cousin under ‘possible relatives’. ”I know that Kitty is related to me,but Jane...I’m honestly shocked”

“Same thing as you Anne” Kat shows her screen.

“Same” After Jane shows her, there is a moment of silence between them,but Jane soon breaks the ice. “I’m going to make some calls” as she leaves the room. Anne leaves the room as well, followed by Katherine.

Gabriel Reyes, call sign "Reaper," had been asleep for exactly thirty-nine years, three months, and eleven days. It was a long time to be sleeping, sure, but there was still another year of travel before the ISS Watchpoint would finally reach its orbital destination.

One long year of endless boredom, adrift in the middle of nowhere while they prepped systems for the multi–light year research broadcast. And people thought space travel was exciting.

Gabriel yawned as he shut down the cryogenic pod, letting the glass slide shut. It powered down with an electronic chirp, and the dim lights inside blinked off. Stretching, he pushed off the wall, floating weightlessly to the hatch, sliding through into the narrow hallway.

"Morning," he mumbled, grabbing onto a handle in the wall to stop his flight. Lena Oxton, call sign "Tracer," was floating upside down across the shuttle, raiding a hatch in the wall for something to eat. She turned her head at the sound of his voice, breaking into a friendly grin.

“Mornin' Reaper!" she said brightly, throwing a plastic food packet to him. It floated over easily. Gabriel grabbed the tube, giving her a thankful nod. He made a face, ripping off the top, forcing the grainy protein goop down his throat. He’d kill for some warm scrambled eggs and a plate of fresh bacon right about now. Instead, he was stuck with cold lime oatmeal.

"Who else is awake?" he asked, wiping at his mouth with the back of his palm, stifling down a yawn.

Tracer paused, considering the question as she floated some peanuts into her mouth, crunching on them thoughtfully. "Well, Mercy woke up about a week early,” she said. “She only just finished getting the medical bay back online. Torbjorn, Genji, D.Va and I all woke up different times yesterday and the day before. So the only folks still asleep are Mcree, Ana, and Mei. The doc says they should be awake ‘fore the week is out."

Gabriel paused, raising an eyebrow. "Okay,” he said slowly, leaning back midair. “But what about Jack?"

Tracer kicked lightly off the wall, spinning herself playfully. "Why d’you wanna know?" She asked, grinning with mischief in her eyes. "Aww, don’t tell me—are you worried 'bout him?"

Gabriel rolled his eyes, staring her down irritably, refusing to give the cheeky Brit the satisfaction of an answer.

"Stop giving me that evil eye, love!" Tracer huffed, crossing her arms. "Commander Morrison woke up two days ago. Genji told me he's up in the cockpit getting contact back up with mission control. The Commander actually asked to see you soon as you woke up," she added, breaking back into a smile. “Seems he’s as worried ‘bout you as you are ‘bout him.”

He felt his heart jump suddenly in his chest, his cheeks warming—probably just another after effect of cryogenic sleep. Still, he couldn’t help but be glad Jack wanted to see him. He nodded, glancing towards the cockpit. "I got it. See you later." He kicked off the wall, propelling himself up towards the front of the shuttle.

"Don't forget your rubbish!" yelled Tracer, grabbing the empty goo tube he'd abandoned, shoving it in the pocket of her uniform jumpsuit. He smirked as she grumbled behind him, feeling her glare burning in the soles of his boots. "You’re a bloody trash man, Reyes!"

Ignoring her below, he pulled himself up the hall. A short ways up the shuttle, Torbjorn and D.Va floated next to an open wiring panel, picking at the machinery inside, chatting absently. He gave them a quick wave as he brushed past, but they were distracted enough with their that they didn’t offer much except for a flash of a smile and a quick hello.

Gabriel opened the hatch into the cockpit, pulling himself in. The room was small, but everything on the shuttle was—Torbjorn said it was about conservation of space or something like that. Sure it was all fine for him, he matched the ship’s scale.

Gabriel pulled himself down along the rows of seats, peering past the high narrow backs of the chairs.

"This is Commander Jack Morrison of the ISS Watchpoint. Mission Control, do you copy? I repeat, do you copy?” There was a pause, marred only by radio static. “No response, moving to frequency channel twelve. This is Commander Jack Morrison of the—"

"Hey there old man," Gabriel said, latching onto Jack as he floated over, anchoring himself on.

Jack blinked in surprise, breaking into an grin. "Old man, huh? You aren’t talking about me, are you?"

Gabriel stuck out his tongue. "You were born like eighty years ago Jack. Cryo sleep or no, you’re still old."

Jack laughed, narrowing his eyes. "And you’re saying you aren't?"

Gabriel swooned dramatically. "Haven't you noticed Jacky?” he said, pressing a hand to his chest. “My beauty is ageless.”

Jack bit back a laugh, rolling his eyes to try and hide it. He paused, his lined expression softening. "It’s good to see you awake Gabe.”

“What, were you watching me sleeping?” Gabriel said. It was meant to be teasing, but the bite fell out of his words—they came out soft, gentle.

“Too busy for that,” Jack said softly. He reached up, resting a hand on Gabriel’s arm, running his fingers across his skin gently. “Gabe. . .You're really cold."

Gabriel pulled away quickly. He'd been touching Jack for too long. Friends or not, there was a difference in rank between them now, and some things were just crossing the line. "Well, I did just crawl out a cryogenic pod, so—"

Jack turned to face him, his soft expression quickly disappearing behind his usual serious mask. “Right,” he said, suddenly brisk. “Anyway, I have some mission parameters I need to discuss with you about the coming year.”

Looking away, Gabriel nodded, dragging himself down into one of the seats, locking his ankles underneath to keep from floating away. “Of course. No contact with mission control yet?”

“There are a couple more frequencies I’ve been told to try,” Jack said dismissively, picking up a small stack of papers, flipping through. “Torbjorn and Hana are giving the whole shuttle a maintenance review, and Angela is giving Genji a preliminary checkup so he and Tracer can head outside and check the satellite dish.”

“What do you need from me?” Gabriel asked impatiently, leaning back into the chair. He felt a tear of regret in his stomach for pulling back, wishing his arms were still locked around Jack’s shoulders. He felt an ache for his touch. But they were professionals. And they had important things they needed to focus on. There wasn’t time for distractions.

Ranks needed to be respected.

“One of your tasks was to prepare for a contingency scenario in case contact with mission control can’t be made,” Jack said, looking away, stress lining his sharp features. He took a deep breath, glancing out the window at the dark world beyond. “There’s no certainty yet, of course, there’s still a fair chance that we’ll reestablish contact, but it’s important that we’re prepared.”

“Sure. I’ve got everything ready. Do you need anything else, or can I go prep for the contingency scenarios?” Gabriel asked flatly, looking away.

Jack paused, nodding silently, looking again out the window, his eyes tracing the shapes in the sky. “That’s everything.”

Gabriel looked away, taking a deep breath. He was going to need to go ask Angela about their supply reserves. Of course, it wasn’t much help that Ana was still under. He was just going to have to wait on that, then. “Alright. If that’s everything you wanted to say, I’m just going to head down to the medical bay to discuss this with Doctor Ziegler, and—”

"I'm sorry Gabe."

Gabriel paused, turning away. "I don't know what you're talking about."

Jack looked down, taking a heavy deep breath. "I know you wanted to be commander on this mission. I know you've always wanted this. And you deserved it. I should have said no, turned the position down and told them that I. . .I don't know. I'm just. . .so sorry. About all of it."

Gabriel snorted, rubbing quickly at his eyes. He couldn't start crying now, not with how embarrassingly obvious zero gravity would make it. "Listen, Jack, it's fine, alright? I don't really care about it."

"We both know that's not true," Jack said softly, running his hand back through his floppy yellow hair. They both fell quiet, floating in one another's air, the only sound coming from the soft buzz of the ventilation system and the omnipresent thrum of the massive engine.

Hesitantly, Gabriel lifted his eyes, offering a tired smile, frustration lining his expression. "Still can't believe I've got to answer to you now, 'Commander’ Morrison."

Jack managed to weakly return the smile, snorting. "Trust me Gabe, the disbelief is mutual."

There was another pause in conversation, then Jack spoke again, absentmindedly scratching his stubbly chin. "Do you remember back in the training program?” he asked, his words slow, cautiously chosen. “When we dated for a few months? Gabe, why. . .why did we stop?"

Gabriel considered the question, a bitterness swelling up in his chest. "I told you back then. I had to focus on training so I could get a command position. Both of us did."

Jack's face flushed red as he pushed away from the dashboard, floating barely closer. “Gabe,” he said softly, searching Gabriel’s dark eyes needingly. "I guess, what I'm trying to say is, well, we aren’t really in training anymore. We're all the way out here. Together. Even before we went under the cryo sleep, I just couldn't stop thinking. It was always on my mind. I just kept thinking that maybe things could change. That maybe we could. . .you know what, never mind. We. . .we just have to focus on the mission. There's too much we have to think about right now. Just. . .forget I said anything."

Jack fell quiet, eyes turned away, seeming almost unaware that Gabriel was watching him. The orange mission jumpsuit sharpened his lean, well–built figure against the silvers and grays of the shuttle's interior wall. He cut an unearthly silhouette against the window, framed by the beautiful inky void, starlight reflecting off his golden hair.

He was beautiful, but more important than that, he was Jack. His Jack, always there, always pushing to be stronger, faster, better. Always ready to do what had to be done for the sake of others and for the sake of the mission. Always there, always close. But not close enough.

He was sick of this thin thread between them. He needed Jack, and he was pretty damn certain Jack needed him too.

Gabriel grabbed Jack's shoulder, pulling himself in close, feeling the warmth of Jack's skin on his. Their fingers slipped into the spaces between, a perfect, wonderful fit. They floated together, sharing their breath, their moment of quiet peace.

Gabriel lifted his eyes, meeting Jack's, his heart pounding heavily in his throat. "Jack," he whispered, his voice hoarse. "Can I—"

"Yes," Jack said softly, already leaning in. Their lips slid together, pressing into each other, their skin brushing close. Gabriel slid his hands up along Jack's neck, pulling him close, savoring the closeness, the warmth. He could feel Jack’s pulse, steady and strong, pumping life into them both.

Jack pulled back for just a moment, catching his breath before sliding back with a renewed hunger, a need. He pressed himself close, moving with a desire and a purpose.

They intertwined themselves, digging into one another, as if desperate for this moment, this connection, to last between them forever. They breath was heavy, as if drinking in what they’d waited for, what they’d been wanting for so long now.

It wasn’t forgiveness, exactly, at least, not yet. But it was an invitation. Another chance to try, another chance at what they had both been waiting on. Gabriel pulled back slowly, his lip brushing across Jack's softly, before leaning reluctantly away, his eyes still tracing Jack’s mouth.

Jack offered a flustered smile, catching his breath. "I guess I didn't realize how much I missed that,” he said softly, his voice quiet and breathy. His hand tightened around Gabriel’s. “How much. . .I missed you."

Gabriel closed his eyes, leaning his cheek gently against Jack's, breathing in the smell of his skin. It was a soft, leathery smell, familiar and comforting. "Missed you too, Jackie," he murmured, resting in the warmth of their shared embrace.

“Aw, how cute." The communications panel lit up on the dashboard. "And you say you two were in training together? Adorable. I’ll give it, say, seven out of ten. Points off for pacing and poor visuals, but not bad, not bad at all."

Turning an unnaturally bright shade of red, Jack scrambled back to the panel, holding down the answer button. "Who–who is this? How do you have this channel?" he stammered.

The staticky voice chuckled. "Sorry for the wait commander—our satellite was down due to a few unfortunate circumstances. Don’t worry your pretty little head about it. You can call me Sombra. I'm the main computer officer for mission control, at your service.

“I'll be guiding you through this next year. But there'll be some things I think the two of you can do on your own, si? Unfortunately, I don't believe we packed any protection, so you’ll be on your own there!”

If you’ve never been to Oceanside on a visit to San Diego, make it a must-see this year. This coastal city, affectionately dubbed O’side by residents, is one of only 14 designated California Cultural Districts in the state. Easy to get to, it’s the last stop on a Coaster ride from downtown San Diego to North County.

Once thought of primarily as a military town with Camp Pendleton on its northern edge, it’s come into its own with a burgeoning culinary and art scene that includes new restaurants, wineries, and breweries, plus emerging cultural, artistic, and tourist attractions. The many things to do in Oceanside won’t disappoint.

Hit the Oceanside Beach

It’s SoCal, after all, so the beach usually tops everyone’s must-do list. Oceanside has plenty of choices with nine public beaches. Perhaps the most popular Oceanside beach is Pier View South on the south side of Oceanside Pier. It’s adjacent to Pier View North. It’s also a short walk down The Strand to Tyson Street Beach and Wisconsin Street Beach.

Harbor Beach, adjacent to Oceanside Harbor, is the largest beach in Oceanside and is equally popular. Both beaches are lifeguard protected and have numerous amenities. Paid parking lots fill up fast. The blocks surrounding the pier have paid parking, but a street parking is free a couple of short blocks away (if you can find space).

Walk, Drive, or Pedal The Strand

The Strand is a 1.5-mile-long street that runs parallel to the Oceanside shoreline from Breakwater Way on the northern end to Wisconsin Avenue on the southern end.

All summer, you’ll see cars crawling along The Strand as people check out the waves and the crowded beach scene. Cars share the one-way, single-lane street with pedestrians, dog walkers, bicyclists, and surreys.

Dine on the Oceanside Pier

Historic Oceanside Pier is the largest wooden pier on the West Coast. It’s a two-minute walk from downtown and a four-minute walk from the Coaster station.

This neighborhood icon provides visitors with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and is a favored spot to watch whale migrations and frolicking dolphins. Ruby’s Diner, a Swing Era inspired eatery, sits at the end of the pier serving classic American fare including hamburgers with fries, sandwiches, soups, salads, milkshakes, and fabulous views.

Fishing is allowed on the pier, and there is a bait shop at the pier’s halfway point. You can get great photos of the coastline from the end of the pier.

Tyson Street Park includes Tyson Beach. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see Lifeguard Tower 5 on the beach. You can access the park via The Strand, which runs between the grassy park and the sandy beach. Another access point is at the top of the hill at Pacific Street.

There is a colorful multi-level stairway leading from the metered parking above to the park. You’ll find picnic tables with benches, a public telephone, restroom and shower facilities, an expansive grassy area for lounging, a children’s playground, and of course beach access across The Strand. The beach between the flags is marked for swimming only, no surfing.

For better or worse, the democratization of recording equipment has put home recording, production, and distribution within the reach of anyone with a computer. But how did we get here?

“What microphone should I buy?” “What monitors are best?” As something of a “gear head,” these are the kids of questions I hear all the time—as if there was a simple, perfectly packaged answer I could pull out of my back pocket.

For better or worse, the democratization of recording equipment has put home recording, production, and distribution within the reach of anyone with a computer. A vibrant gear market has sprung up to pry hard-fought bitcoins from home recordists, selling them promises of recreating that quintessential vintage sound in their basement. But how did we get here?

Analog is the way of the natural world: infinite detail, infinite resolution. Tape is one medium that represents analog audio information; vinyl records are another example. When something is converted from analog to digital, that infinite detail is distilled into a finite number of values, so when you digitize analog sounds, you naturally lose some information. The idea is that the detail lost is so minor you wouldn’t be able to notice the difference, but of course, some nerd is bound to claim that you absolutely can. Anyway, digital audio is a cornerstone of the broader computer revolution that has been going on since the 1950s. This whole home recording thing got really serious (assuming you don’t think 4-track was serious) when computers and analog-to-digital conversion got good enough and cheap enough to be useful to the layman. Little did you know that the Garageband application included with the Macbook your daddy bought you before he dropped you off at your college dorm is built on a rig lightyears more more advanced than the multi-tracking tape setup Les Paul pioneered in the 1950s. Tape used to be what you recorded audio to, but tape is dead now. Digital is just too convenient and inexpensive. Maintaining and calibrating a tape machine is no longer necessary. So all hail the digital revolution; we lost a bit, but we—the masses—gained a lot.

People get hung up on tubes a lot. Tubes are often associated with good sound, but what the hell even are they?

Tubes were our first means of amplifying and modulating signals. Vacuum tubes consist of a super hot metal plate that sends electrons whizzing off of it towards a receiver plate. Decades ago, lab rats in white coats and horn-rimmed glasses (not ironic) figured out that they could put a screen in between those plates and control how many of those boiled electrons got to the receiver. The tube amp sound that people flip over is due to two things: the first is the geeks in the lab coats—they were professionals who did good design for other professionals in the music production and broadcast world. Secondly, most of us—depending on how old we are—find tube sound comforting because many of the records we grew up listening to were recorded using tubes. While you were bopping along in your car seat in the back of your mom’s Pontiac Sunbird listening to Linda Ronstadt as a child, your mental circuitry was getting wired to tubes.

Then there’s solid state, which gets a bad rap. Solid state uses the same principle as tubes: a transmitter, a receiver, and a modulator, but what makes it different is that it employs doped semiconductors. Usually, silicon is the base material and then some other element like Boron is added to give a certain area a different electrical property. It is actually pretty interesting to sit through a Solid State Physics class, not because it’s so cool to say, “I’m a science nerd” these days, but because this shit has changed the world.

Anyway, what’s everyone’s problem with solid state? It’s mostly bad design and early technological limitations. Solid state gear was cheap to manufacture, and as a result, it became what was (and still is) in the hands of the masses. Most early solid state gear that flooded the market was designed to be consumer-grade (lower quality) and used chips that weren’t designed for audio. The resulting sound was harsh. Add that to the fact that our brains were hardwired for the tube sound and solid state was doomed to be second rate. It’s unfortunate because, with the right design and the right parts, you can get great audio from solid state.

These days, tubes and solid state stand side-by-side. As with the move from analog to digital, the trend is towards more power in the hands of more people at lower cost, which might also mean slightly lower quality.

Gear Collectors vs. Musicians

Gear fetishization is a problem. Many “musicians” are really gear collectors posing as musicians to legitimize their over-consumption of bullshit. Buying shit feels good. I’ve fallen victim to this myself, and notice peers who do the same. Some of the worst of these displays are vintage gear hoarders, who acquire the right gear to recreate some old Rolling Stones sound or some Beatles record. How is this a worthwhile use of time and bitcoins? These great records of the past have been done to magnificent effect by truly excellent musicians, and there’s no chance that these gear collectors are going to come home from their 9-to-5 job and make Sticky Fingers Part 2 in their free time. This beautiful dream moves product and protects the investment price of the real gear collectors, who sell their wares to (mostly baby boomer) salarymen nursing their rock and roll dreams. You’re either a gear collector or a musician; I suggest you pick one and get on with it.

We’re heading into a brave new world where more and more people have the means to create and distribute music. This is a wonderful development and reminds me of the infinite monkey theorem: maybe if you give infinite musicians with infinite Garagebands an infinite amount of time, they’ll eventually record something cool. Or maybe they’ll put out another chillwave bedroom pop project. Only time will tell.
