The GMT900 chassis is one of the worst truck platform ever built by GM. It very much would hurt you. Variable displacement yucky icky.
That and Ford still couldn't build a halfway decent motor for their trucks until 2011 with the 5.0. The eco-memes will throw water pumps until Ford figured out to make it do that less often in 2018.
If you want a good modern truck, go for the GMT800 chassis.

Or if you really want to take the redpill, go a little bit older and get a GMT400

Idk why exactly but I have a soft spot for like early 2010s trucks. Like 2011-15. I guess it was the last time period for design that wasn’t trying to be aggressive. Plus each of the big three was making a good full sized diesel then

The History Of Chevrolet Pickups
Chevrolet pickups marked 100 years in 2018, and over 85 million trucks have been produced in the past century. Let’s take a look at some classic Chevrolet pickups to see their evolution over the years.
The Beginning of Chevrolet Pickup History
Superior Trucks: 1918-1929
Chevy released its first truck in 1918, the Chevy Model 490, and was inspired by vehicles used in plants to move parts and pieces across the facilities. The 1918 Series 490 was super primitive and was sold as a chassis with just a frame and a basic seat. The engine was a basic 2.8-liter 4-cylinder good for 30 horsepower or less.
A New Era: 1929-1936
In 1929 Chevrolet introduced its International Series LD. In 1931, Chevrolet started producing factory-built pickups. The Independence Series had four body styles available: a pickup, panel, sedan delivery, and canopy. In 1936, the first-generation pickups came to an end with the next engine update for Chevrolet trucks.
Post World War II: 1937-1946
In 1937, Chevrolet pickups were equipped with a 78-horsepower engine. In 1938 the company introduced the Chevrolet Half-Ton truck featuring a new redesigned vertical grille and front bumper along with swept fenders.
In 1946, after World War II, Chevy produced a full line of trucks ranging from light duty to heavy duty. However, these trucks were only in production until 1947, when Chevrolet launched a completely redesigned line of pickups known as the “Advance Design” trucks.
Advance Design Trucks: 1947-1954
Debuting in 1947, the Advance Design pickups sported a completely new look with a five-bar horizontal grille. Beneath the hood was a 216.5-cubic inch Thrift Master overhead-valve six-cylinder engine capable of producing 90 horsepower.
In 1954 the trucks featured a brand-new grille, steering wheel, instrument panel, parking lights, and a one-piece windshield. The engine increased to 235.5-cubic inches with 112 horsepower.
Task Force: 1955-1959
In 1955, Chevrolet released the new “Task Force” models that included a new small block V8 engine. The Chevrolet 3124 Series Cameo Carrier had a new power steering and power brakes, and a 12-volt electrical system. The small block V8 engine displaced 265 cubic inches and 162 horsepower with a two-barrel carburetor. The small block was enlarged to 283 cubic inches in 1957, with ratings starting at 185 horsepower.
Evolution Of Modern Trucks
Chevy C/K Series 1960-1966
The 1960 redesign marked the introduction of the C/K designations for Chevrolet. “C” was for 2-wheel drive models and “K” was for 4-wheel drive models. There was a more sophisticated suspension design providing a more car-like ride.
Chevy C/K Series: 1967-1972
The 1967-1972 Chevrolet and GMC trucks were named “Action Line.” Most pickup models in this generation were built with coil spring rear suspension. All the 1967-1972 four-wheel drive trucks had leaf springs on both axles.
Chevy C/K: 1973-1986
For the 1973 Chevrolet and GMC trucks, testing was done in a wind tunnel and designed for better aerodynamics. The wheelbase of these models was extended and a dual rear wheel option was offered on one-ton pickups.
Chevy C/K Series (GMT400): 1988-1998
From 1990-1993, a performance model called 454SS had a 454ci V8, a sport suspension, and quick ratio steering. A turbo-diesel was also made available beginning in 1992.
In 1995, Vortec V8s debuted with high-flow cylinder heads, roller valve lifters, new camshaft, and higher compression for increased power and efficiency.
Chevy Silverado (GMT800): 1999-2007
General Motors dropped the C/K designations for 1999. They chose Silverado for Chevrolet and Sierra for GMC, referring to the new platform as GMT800. Just before the next generation (GMT900) was released for the 2007 model year, GM began selling outgoing GMT800 models under the name "Silverado Classic."
Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra (GMT900): 2007-2018
GMT900 series pickups are the most popular for businesses with employees that drive more than 100,000+ miles. These pickups are considered the most reliable Silverados and Sierras that GM has ever produced.
The series has two available V8 engines were equipped with Active Fuel Management (AFM). This is a feature that deactivated four cylinders when the engine wasn't under load.
GMC Canyon & Colorado
Chevrolet also produced a smaller pickup truck called Colorado also known as the S10 before 2004. The GMC Canyon and Colorado became standalone trucks, with the first generation produced from 2004-2012.
In 2018, Chevrolet produced a Centennial Special Edition Colorado alongside the Silverado. The celebratory model featured a 3.6L DOHC V6 engine capable of producing 308 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque.
From the first Chevy truck in 1918 to the new 2018 Silverado and Colorado Centennial editions, Chevy has come a long way from where it started so many years ago and there is a continued popularity of its older designs.

A lot of people lately have been telling me that Chevy is not a very environmentally conscious car company. They have those enormous SUVs, and they break down a lot, which requires you to order parts from another country. Parts, of course, that come in little vacuum-sealed plastic bags, which end up dissolving in the ocean and being eaten by cute little shrimp, who in turn are inhaled by cute little whales, who fucking die.
All this might be true, but Chevrolet is ahead of the rest of the auto industry in one major way. Their packaging for replacement V8 engines is extremely biodegradable, and even often transports itself to the place of purchase.
If you don’t believe me, head on down to your local pull-it-yourself junkyard and look for a GMT900 Silverado. You’ll probably find half a dozen of them in a row, all with teams of weekend warriors working furiously to liberate that glorious vee aight and give it a new life. Why buy brand-new crate motors for drag racing, when Papa GMC is handing them out with only a few hundred thousand miles on the odometer?
Sure, GM also makes lots of biodegradable wrappers – cars, in their parlance – that carry less-desirable engines. It seems unlikely that anyone is going to go cutting through a rad support on a hot August night in order to liberate an L61 Ecotec from a 2007 Malibu that had a little case of the blown-up-transmissionsies. Nobody’s perfect, but even then, those engines are compressed into a little tiny wad of metal and sold to the Chinese market, who are likely to recycle them into disposable electric cars in the future, improving the environment even further.

Dec 11, 2007. #4. You may not need to replace the axle. If there is no damage you can drill out the rosette weld and reweld it. The tubes are usually only welded in two places per tube. However if the tubes spin fairly easy without use of a jack and the press fit interference is gone, you should replace the axle.

2009 - 2014 Ford F150 - Front axles stuck in 4wd while in 2wd, cant spin them by hand - So after doing some research, i found that the front axles should spin freely in 2wd. I just went out and checked and confirmed that my front axles are not spinning freely and are locked. Other than getting basically 4wd gas. The front shaft will also spin slightly on YJ's when in 2wd, it's parasitic drag through the open diff. And if you don't like it, grab the front drive shaft (with it in 2wd) and rotate it a few times manually. It should then stop rotating until you put it back into 4wd. 02-14-2005, 05:05 PM #8. Wheel Bearing Noise. Do I Have a Bad Wheel Bearing?.
Remove the jack from underneath the knuckle and lower the vehicle back to the jack stands. step 5Removing the Axle. 7:34. Remove the six 12-point bolts from the CV axle and use a pry bar for leverage. Tap the spline end of the CV axle into the knuckle. Remove the axle. step 6Installing the Axle. We recommend starting by rotating your tires to see if the noise changes.... A good way to tell how bad your problem is is by checking for oil leaks around the ends of the axle and where the drive shaft enters the differential.... remove the wheels and spin the hubs by hand. If one spins much harder than the others, or feels lumpy then that. That depends on how much resistance there is in the driveline - if you're turning one wheel, something else has to turn as well. If the driveshaft/gearbox output shaft has the most drag, then the other rear wheel will turn backwards as you turn the one near you forwards. If the other rear wheel has the most drag, then the drive shaft will turn.

Become a GM-T Member Today! In 20 seconds you can become part of the worlds largest and oldest community discussing General Motors, Chevrolet and. The front drive shaft connects the transfer case to the front differential. When 4WD is engaged, the transfer case splits the torque 50/50 between the front and rear drive shafts. The front drive shaft spins at the same speed as the rear drive shaft, transferring torque to the front differential. If the VC is going out, when it cools down it will allow the front driveshaft output to slip with respect to the rear driveshaft output. So the rear tires can roll on the pavement while the front output shaft spins freely in the air because the stationary front axle is not connected and cannot prevent the front output shaft from spinning.
When does a CV axle need to be replaced? - TestingA.
Doing it that way, seems to be a fairly straightforward process. Steps: 1.) With car on the ground loosen lug nuts. 2.) Jack up car and remove rear wheel. 3.) Remove bolts/nuts holding rear axle to axle hubs. You do not have to remove from the differential, just move.
How to Replace Front CV Axle 1997-2003 Ford F-150 - 1A Auto.
Now, rotate the suspended tire two revolutions and count the number of driveshaft turns. The reason to make two revolutions is the open differential actually rotates half as many times as a ‘posi,’ because of the design of the “open” gear operation. if the driveshaft turned 3 3/4 revolutions for two rotations of the tire, you have a 3..

YOUR CART. FASHION // LIFESTYLE. OUR MUST HAVES: SUMMER 2016. Read More. The design of these gears, and how they react to varying levels of resistance between the left and right wheels, is what defines an open differential (or "open diff") compared to a limited-slip differential (or "limited-slip diff"). Both will allow a sufficient degree of variation between the left and right wheels to make smooth turns.
Home ().
The trimmer head will not spin if the drive shaft is damaged or disconnected. Solution. Remove the engine assembly from the driveshaft and check to verify if it's an inappropriate location. If the shaft has fallen out of place, reinstall it. The shaft must be replaced if it is badly damaged. Mark the wheel and the drive shaft with chalk or masking tape. Turn the wheel TWO revolutions and count the number of driveshaft turns. The number of driveshaft rotations will help you determine your rear axle ratio. For example, if it turned 3 and a half times, it's a 3.50:1 ratio. If it turned 4 and a quarter times, it's a 4.25:1 ratio. A driveshaft is a cylindrical shaft that transmits torque from the engine to the wheels. They are most commonly found on rear-wheel drive vehicles and connect the rear of the transmission to the driveshaft. As the output shaft of the transmission rotates it spins the driveshaft, which then turns the differential ring gear to rotate the wheels.
Rotating pinion up on a dana 60 front???? (Archive... - IFSJA.
The most common reason to replace a CV axle is when a boot breaks (in the photo), allowing the grease to leak out. Broken CV axle boot. See more illustrations: Fig1, Fig2. See the photo of a good CV axle boot. Without proper lubrication, a CV joint will not last long. See the photo of a bad CV axle.
Xcceleration.
If you're just replacing a half-shaft for your front wheel drive car, then it will cost anywhere from $470 to $940. You can expect the parts cost to be anywhere from $320 to $750, while the labor costs are only around $150 to $190. If you have a rear wheel or four wheel drive vehicle which has a long drive shaft to power the rear wheels, then.

Thread starter. #6. I'm assuming the left side works because- 1) locking the left hub = engages the axle shaft and the driveshaft does not spin free 2) unlocking the left hub = frees the axles shaft, driveshaft spins free. If I lock both hubs, the driveshaft doesn't spin freely because the left hub and axle shaft is working correctly, to my. Car was up on stands at the front. After a full steering re-fit I started the engine to sort the PAS system. Whilst it was in the air, with the engine running and gearbox in neutral <I checked!> and the wheels off, I saw the OSF driveshaft moving, rotating forward very very slowly. Thats what it is suppose to do. Now higher gears my hands dont have the strength to spin them period. Which is why when I tighten rear diff flange to driveshaft I leave it in 5/6 for gear. Also can't remember in person now but if you have car in neutral and turn driveshaft it should spin the rear 2 wheels only.(unless ebrake is on).
How to check gear ratio by spinning the tire? - Pirate 4x4.
Engine RPM x your final drive ratio out of the trans = driveshaft RPM if your t-case is 1-1 in 2wd. Means your driveshaft is spinning slower than most bench grinders. The trans has a.72 OVERDRIVE. Which slows the engine RPM for a given speed. BUT at the same time it speeds UP the driveshaft.
How do i stop rear drive shaft rotating - IH8MUD Forum.
Lots of guys running that axle here without rotating it. Ranging from 7-10" of lift. Just have to run 1410 u-joints or a high angle shaft with double cardan joints.... let it hang at full droop and see if the front driveshaft spins. with a 6" or so SOA in my scout II,my 23 inch long,non-clearenced front driveshaft almost bound up trying to.

Ridetech Debuts New 88-98 C1500 StreetGRIP System: Taking The 4/6 Kit To A Whole New Level
When the 1988 Chevy and GMC C1500 trucks came out they were IMMEDIATELY lowered and customized. They became the most widely lowered and customized new truck in the history of trucks, and with that came an entire industry that is still in existence today. These trucks are a completely different animal than the previous C10’s of any era. They are smoother, quieter, more comfortable, and more driveable than any other Chevy pickup to come before it. I’ve owned them. You’ve owned them. Everyone has owned one. And almost everyone has had one that was lowered 4 inches up front and 6 inches out back thanks to springs, drop spindles, and a flip kit.
This new StreetGRIP system from Ridetech is taking that old 4/6 kit to a completely new level. The C-Notch is bigger and stronger and better. The bracketry is everything you expect from Ridetech, and the shocks and springs are fine tuned for ride AND handling. And as someone who has a lowered Chevy in their driveway, that is NOT Ridetech equipped, I can tell you that going for the low cost easy system isn’t the best. Even on an even newer truck. Cause ours rides like crap and handles about the same. This new system makes me want to go pickup a standard cab shortbed just to do this to.
Here is all the info and complete story from Ridetech.
The 1988 C1500 pickup kicked off the Sport Truck scene twenty years ago. Right out of the gate, these trucks were heralded for their daily driver usability and good looks. GM had a hit on their hands and the aftermarket wasted no time developing drop kits and other parts. Inspired by the then-new C1500, shops like Boyd Coddington, Trader Tim and Belltech built copious amounts of lowering parts along with dress-up items. Cruise nights and car shows were ruled by Sport Trucks with the C1500 leading the charge. These trucks had a lot of style, but performance and ride quality were lacking. Times have changed and so have expectations.
Today, classic trucks need to do more than just look good. They must live up to the performance benchmarks set by modern trucks like the GMT900 and all new K2 platforms. In response to resurgent interest in 1988-1998 C1500s, RideTech developed a true performance suspension system that does more than just lower your truck. Part of RideTech’s StreetGRIP line, the design significantly improves handling and ride quality while maintaining load carrying capacity and towing capability.
The logical follow-up to RideTech’s StreetGRIP suspension systems for 63-72 and 73-87 C10 pickups StreetGRIP suspension systems is here. RideTech is proud to introduce an all new StreetGRIP performance suspension system for 1988-1998 C1500 pickups. Like all StreetGRIP systems, we focus only on the areas that need improvement rather than upgrading every last part on the truck. In the case of 88-98 C1500’s, that means keeping the factory control arms and leaf springs. Getting down to business, we start with a heavy duty C-Notch design that is unlike anything else on the market. It’s significantly longer than other C-notches and features reinforcements in multiple planes to to maintain frame strength — both torsionally and longitudinally. The result is ample axle clearance even when carrying a load.
Beyond a sturdy foundation, the next important part of this new StreetGRIP system is — by far — the custom-valved shock absorbers. They feature superior monotube damping control inside of an impact forged housing. Monotube shocks are more responsive than twin tube shocks and provide far better body control. Built in shock rebound adjustment lets you fine tune the valving to suit your personal preferences. RideTech includes rear shock extender brackets to maintain proper shock angle. It really is remarkable how well these trucks go down the road with the right set of shock absorbers. RideTech shocks carry an exclusive million-and-one-mile warranty. No other kit on the market can compare.
To get the front of the truck down, RideTech’s StreetGRIP performance system includes custom matched coil springs along with forged ‘Drop” spindles. The springs work in conjunction with the aforementioned monotube shocks to support the front of the truck when the road turns curvy. The spindles lower the vehicle while maintaining suspension geometry and alignment. Brand new grade 8 hardware and heavy duty powder-coated brackets round out the system. RideTech never skimps or cuts corners.
How does this new StreetGRIP system work? The sum total is greater than its individual components. There is something special about these trucks. They feel small compared to subsequent truck generations like the GMT800 and 900s. In a sense, 1988-1998 C1500s are more like muscle cars than pickups. With a low cowl height and low side window sills, you look down on the top of the dash and hood as you move down the road. Likewise, you can rest your arm on the window sill in full comfort. RideTech boss, Bret Voelkel, prefers the factory bench seat, but many of us here really dig the factory buckets and console in our red shop truck.
Taking that notion one step further, you might want to consider an 88-98 C1500 instead an 80s or 90s muscle car. These trucks have plenty of room for big rubber and their double A-Arm suspension design responds favorably to upgrades. With the right wheels and tires, plus our StreetGRIP system, you’ll be blown away by how well these trucks work. Great examples of 88-98 C1500 trucks can be found for less than $5,000 which hopefully leaves money in your pocket for more upgrades.
Lowered C1500 Measurements Are Comparable to a 4/6 Drop:
Wheel Opening Front: 26.25″ with 255/40-18 tires.
Wheel Opening Rear: 26.75″ with 275/40-18 tires.
Front spoiler height: 3.75″ from the ground.
Height of rocker behind front wheel: 5″
Every component in this StreetGRIP System is engineered for performance and ride quality including the extra long, reinforced C-Notches, forged “drop” spindles and impact-forged adjustable monotube shocks. Grade 8 hardware and heavy duty brackets are supplied. You can carry speed through a corner and carry a load with confidence.
The RideTech staff is always looking for an excuse to chase parts in this truck. The foundation of this new system is a pair of extra long, heavy duty C-Notch brackets that provide axle clearance without sacrificing frame strength.
Height at the tops of the wheel openings is as follows: Front – 26.25″ with 255/40-18 tires. and Rear – 26.75″ with 275/40-18 tires. Front spoiler height – 3.75″ from the ground. The RideTech staff is excited to dig into this 454 SS truck. It could be they will keep two of these C1500s around.
Like all RideTech suspension systems, the new C1500 StreetGRIP kit was developed on their own Test Track. The design will run circles around typical 4/6 drop kits.
Early C10s and “squares” are awesome, and so are 88-98 C1500s. These trucks are at another level in terms of ergonomics. The have sporty, car-like cockpits with low door window sills and a great view over the dash. Demand for these trucks is starting to surge.
GM designed these trucks with style. They feature “tucked” bumpers, flush mount door handles and just the right amount of trim. RideTech chose a set of wheels from U.S. Mag that look like the came from an old Porsche. It’s a Sport Truck for sure.
