Would you like some tea with your Spätzle? Part 6 Lipton Tangy Mandarin Orange Green Tea

Speaking of Green tea, today I tasted Liptons Mandarin Orange Green Tea for the first time. I’ve experienced a Lipton tea before and was pleasantly surprised (I will rate this tea I speak of later). From observation, Lipton manages to deliver fairly decent tea with synthetic flavours (something harder to do than using natural flavours, but not impossible). So what sets this Lipton apart from the previous Five Roses Apple and Pear Green tea and what makes it so great if it’s a more synthetic flavoured tea?

Firstly, lets judge appearance. Lipton tea bags come in pyramid shapes which I find quite cute. Besides this, the green tea is a beautiful green, but whats cool is the longer you let it stand, the more orange it gets. So 5. For people that care about calories, I’ve never seen so many zeros on a nutritional information table. So there is no doubt this tea is extremely healthy for you. The price is around double that of the Five Roses but a way better pick.

The smell hits you with an immediate scent of oranges, so it gets a 5 since green tea doesn’t really have a smell. The texture is so amazing because it really feels like I’ve had orange or mandarin peel on my tongue, so 5. Taste it falls short to 4 but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good, you get the initial bitter taste orange, mandarin and the green tea and the finish gets a 5 because the orange and mandarin perfectly balances the aftertaste.

Honestly, I don’t think a natural flavoured green tea could have done better job.

Strong words and strong ratings GMGirl, but what saves the ingredients? You still haven’t answered the question. On close inspection of the box, you have green tea, flavouring and 2% mandarin peel and 2% orange peel. That 4% peel saves the tea. 

This could have been a bitter disaster that would have paired with the Five Roses Ceylon since fruit bitters are usually just that: bitter. Paired with green tea, you’d think they’d be pretty terrible. Whether it be the sweeter content of the peel or the added flavouring, the orange actually stops the green tea from being too bitter and the addition of the peel deceives one into thinking there is actually orange and mandarin fruit pieces in there.

A tea that is a nice cold/flu tea and definitely on my list of regular teas to keep in the house. I can’t say local is lekker this time though, as despite the brand Unilever that produces Lipton having a branch in South Africa, the tea itself is made in Russia. Which is quite interesting, at least I think so.
