Today’s graduating class was special because these @globalvillageproject ladies have been here through my entire three years with the school. As my ladies were recognized, I continued my tradition of literally picking them all up and lifting them higher at graduation. 😂 They are alumnae now, so I can go full love mode on them (my alumnae ladies know what it is 🤗)! S/N: some of my ladies know my husband from tutoring & soccer in the Clarkston community and they would always ask about him. Walking in your purpose leads you to spaces and places you've only dreamt of being. Today I wasn't dreaming... I shared space with THE G.O.A.T., Maya Angelou's daughter (and therefore my mama because Maya is my grandma 😂), my sHero, and the first public figure I aspired to be, @Oprah Winfrey! I watched mama O speak at @agnesscottcollege's commencement and receive an honorary degree in my hometown Decatur, GA! This was my first time hearing her speak live (because it's usually just in my head lol) and I was taking notes! She spoke about several things but here are a few things that gave me life: She said... "You're nothing if you're not the truth." "When you don't know what you want to do...be still and do nothing until you know what you want to do." "Work in your own way to change the world in respectful conversation with others." "Be open to letting the experience of changing the world, change you." "You will get no where without a spiritual practice." "You've got to find a way to nurture the essence of your spirit." "Your legacy is every life you've touched"~Maya Angelou to Oprah ...leave it to Oprah to give you a Master Class every time she opens her mouth! I'm deeply moved by her ability to infect and inspire people. Her power of influence is admirable because it's rooted in hard work and perseverance. I'm blessed that I chose her as a target to aim for growing up. We'll partner soon @Oprah, because it is written! This moment was brought to me by @globalvillageproject and the powers that be! And so it ENDS! Yesterday was my last day working with @globalvillageproject. It was the best of times doing the work and engaging the community and some of the worst of times dealing with the nonprofit structure and leadership. I’ve made a conscious choice to remember the many lessons I've learned, the relationships I've formed, and the successful outcomes I've had doing this work. I’ll take the negative experiences as lessons to guide me throughout my journey and I’ll keep the great experiences with me for as long as I can. I’m leaving this space knowing that I did everything in my power to bring about real change in community engagement and as a part of the leadership team. GVP continues to be a leader in offering refugee girls access to the education necessary to pursue their dreams. I'm grateful to have been a part of carrying this vision for the past three years. I wish the GVP community much success in furthering this work. I also challenge the community to become advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion, supporters and implementers of transformative service, holistic student approaches, and centering culture in education, and builders and sustainers of intercultural communities. I will continue to challenge myself to do the same and advocate for this sector forever. To my @globalvillageproject ladies... know that y’all were the reasons for everything I did and tried to do here and I love y’all! You’ll always be my ladies... ALWAYS! In order to illustrate the transformation of refugee / immigrant students I’ve engaged, I often tell people the story of how I met her. She is the first @globalvillageproject girl I ever met before she and I were at GVP. We met at the top of 2016 when I tutored at a public middle school here in Metro ATL. She had just arrived in the country and she couldn’t speak any English. She left the middle school about a month later and I didn’t see her again until eight months later when I started working at GVP. The first time I saw her at GVP, she was trying to interpret for another student in the front office. Yes, the student that didn’t speak any English in February was not only speaking enough English to communicate an issue and ask questions for someone else but she also felt empowered enough to do so. That was three years ago, now I’ve seen this young leader progress rapidly in her English learning and academics. She will be a high school sophomore this fall. She is very expressive, she has a big personality, and she is a powerful example and leader to her peers. I love how she takes full advantage of the opportunities in her reach and reaches higher for others. This weekend I watched her perform with her Palefsky Collision Project cohort at the @alliancetheatre. She did a great job and her growth is such a joy to witness. Also, I identify with her ability to self-motivate and her ambition at a young age. I’m so proud of her and I can’t wait to see where her will takes her!
