SpaceTime -- A brief history

SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

60 days of ethnic cleansing crimes perpetrated by the "Israeli" occupation army against the Palestinian people in North Gaza, resulting in over 3,700 martyrs and missing persons, 10,000 injured, 1,750 detainees, and the destruction of vital sectors.

For 60 days, the occupation army has launched a relentless and compound assault by land, air, and sea on North Gaza. This aggression targets areas such as Jabalia Camp, Jabalia Town, Jabalia Nazla, Beit Hanoun, Beit Lahia, and the Beit Lahia Project and surrounding regions. The attack has left over 3,700 martyrs and missing persons, 2,400 of whom have been buried. Additionally, 10,000 individuals have been injured and 1,750 have been detained. The occupation has also deliberately obstructed civil defense teams in the governorate while destroying vital sectors, especially the health sector, hospitals, water networks, sewage systems, infrastructure, roads, and streets. This has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in North Gaza, now declared a disaster zone in every sense of the term.

The Government Media Office has obtained numerous firsthand testimonies from eyewitnesses, corroborating that 500-650 bodies of martyrs have remained in the streets for two months due to the occupation's prevention of medical, emergency, and civil defense teams from reaching them. This has led to stray dogs scavenging on the corpses, leaving only scattered bones. These bodies remain unidentified at the time of issuing this statement.

The occupation continues its planned, brutal aggression against civilians, safe residential neighborhoods, and displacement and shelter centers. This includes acts of revenge, forcibly displacing tens of thousands of civilians from their homes, and committing crimes against humanity as defined by international law.

The occupation persists in its systematic killing, destruction, and forced displacement with US backing (https://t.me/PalestineResist/65448) and the participation of Britain, Germany, and France. These actions are greenlit by the US, allowing for further massacres, genocide, and ethnic cleansing.

The aggression extends beyond these crimes to include the starvation and dehydration of civilians by denying access to aid, goods, and essential supplies. Over 8,000 aid trucks have been prevented from entering North Gaza.

The occupation has also destroyed and displaced dozens of shelter centers hosting tens of thousands of displaced individuals, bombed homes, mosques, institutions, residential areas, hospitals, and markets, and committed massacres that killed thousands in a deliberate and brutal manner. It has systematically prevented civil and humanitarian teams from operating, withheld food from medical staff, arrested and tortured them, and obstructed critical health campaigns such as polio vaccination drives.

The Palestinian people in North Gaza are enduring unimaginable atrocities. In light of these crimes, we emphasize the following:

We condemn the "Israeli" occupation's crimes against humanity, massacres, ethnic cleansing, and genocide deliberately targeting tens of thousands of civilians, children, and women in North Gaza. We demand all nations condemn these horrific massacres against residential neighborhoods, civilians, hospitals, medical teams, mosques, and civil institutions.

We hold the "Israeli" occupation, the US administration, the UK, Germany, France, and all complicit states fully responsible for the continued ethnic cleansing and genocide against our people, particularly in North Gaza, which has been systematically targeted for extermination.

We call on the international community and all global organizations to fulfill their roles under international law and international humanitarian law. This includes providing humanitarian, medical, and relief services and ensuring civil protection for hospitals, institutions, and residential neighborhoods.

We urge them to pressure the "Israeli" occupation by all means to halt its horrific crimes against humanity and end the genocide of unarmed civilians in Gaza, particularly in North Gaza.

Bryce Martinez (18) from Pennsylvania is mounting a legal challenge against major food companies, alleging that their ultra-processed foods (UPFs) led to his development of Type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease at the age of 16.

The 11 firms listed in the lawsuit are Kraft Heinz, Mondelez, Coca-Cola, Post Holdings, PepsiCo, General Mills, Nestle’s (US), WK Kellogg, Mars, Kellanova and Conagra.

UPFs have undergone multiple processing steps and often contain additives, preservatives and artificial ingredients. These UPFs have become staples in many households. Examples of UPFs are prepackaged soups, many breakfast cereals, sauces, frozen pizza, ready-to-eat meals, hot dogs, sausages, sodas, ice cream and store-bought cookies, cakes, candies and doughnuts.

Martinez’s legal team contends that the big food corporations have deliberately engineered their products to trigger addictive responses. His lawyers at Morgan & Morgan, a major US law firm, says the case is unprecedented and includes claims for conspiracy, negligence, fraudulent misrepresentation and unfair business practices.

Martinez had regularly consumed popular UPFs throughout his childhood. The lawsuit challenges the food industry’s argument that consumers have free choice in their dietary decisions. It argues that the notion of free choice is compromised by aggressive marketing tactics, especially aimed at children, and the addictive nature of these products.

A Promotional Press Release For Foodfight! The Junior Novelization

Hey everyone, it's Tiffany Amber back once again with something NEW to share! A while back, while searching to see if the Foodfight! novelization was documented anywhere other than my ownership of seemingly the only existing copy, I came across the Random House book catalog from the fall of 2007, and given they were the company that published the novelization, I decided to skim through and see if Foodfight! was mentioned anywhere within its hundreds of pages. Much to my surprise it WAS, and it's almost as interesting as the novelization itself! First off, it's the only place I've seen it officially acknowledged outside of a very brief mention on the movie's website back in 2008- not that movie novelizations are highly promoted to begin with, but it's been an enigma for some time how just how little information is out there about this book or why only a single copy has ever surfaced. With this catalog excerpt however, I think we have some answers.

So first off, the movie's release date is mentioned here as being November 16th 2007. Not that this is especially unusual- the official Foodfight! website displayed a tentative release date of "Fall 2007" for quite some time, but the film must have been close to completion at this point for them to have an exact date laid out. As to why this date wasn't met?

I can't say, but just under a year later, a post on the film's IMDb message board indicated that the film had been finished, and that screenings were being held in New York. This tracks with a comment from a crewmember in 2011 mentioning they "saw this movie at a Threshold screening back when it was completed" and makes it clear beyond all doubt that Foodfight was actually finished back in 2008 (if you can actually call the film that came out "finished") Why wasn't it released until 2012 and why did they sit on the movie for 4 years after it had already been completed? Well now I'm just getting off track, but it's curious they held off on releasing it for so long when all the tie-in marketing and merchandising was ready to go that year and their releases would've actually lined up (indeed, blog posts from around 2008 mention seeing various Foodfight! books and soft toys in bargain-bin stores despite the movie not being out yet)

The catalog goes on to mention they were expecting "over $100 million in marketing support" (yeah, and monkeys might fly out of my butt) as well as various other tie-in products that were set to be released. These include toys from Playmates and video games from Global Star Software, both of which I've covered in previous blog posts and were ultimately never released, but also mention board games by a company called Master Pieces and apparel by CK Pacific, which I've never seen mentioned anywhere in relation to the movie. It's interesting just how deep the rabbit hole goes with Foodfight! merchandise, and just how much they were planning that never even made it to store shelves.

The catalog also shows a display of various Foodfight! books set to be released, among them our beloved novelization we've spent so much time discussing on here. However, there are several OTHER Foodfight! books shown there about which no information has ever surfaced. The following pages contain further details about each book, but they hardly tell you anything about what they would've consisted of- each of the blurbs are just a generic description of the movie's plot, along with some incredibly brief clarification as to the contents of the books. There's a full-color storybook called Mission Marketropolis, a "Step 2 Reader" called Dare The Day, the Junior Novelization, a sticker book called The Secret's Inside, a coloring book called Top Dog, and a paint book called When Good Food Goes Bad. Outside of the novelization, not a single copy of any of these books has ever surfaced, and the catalog doesn't give any further insight as to their content.

So, did these books ever actually even exist? I'm sure they did! After all, if they went to the trouble of having a 128-page novelization written, I'm sure they'd do the same for several other, smaller books. Some of the books even have Amazon pages, although all of them claim their availability is limited and they're out of print. Is it possible they were never even IN print? That these books were created with the intent of being widely published and distributed, but the deal fell through for whatever reason, and only a few copies of each were ever printed? I'm just spitballing at this point, but if that were true it'd certainly go a long way to explaining why I seemingly own the only copy of the novelization in existence. Incidentally, the other Foodfight! books I've mentioned on this blog (the Deluxe Sound Storybook and I Can Find It! books) were published by a completely different company known as Meredith Books, and so wouldn't have been affected by whatever was going on with the books set to be published by Random House. The whole thing is still something of an enigma, but this catalog at least helps clear up a few lingering questions. However, in the process it does raise another..

For some reason, the catalog uses an incredibly janky and off-model version of this Dex render on one of the book's covers, and I have literally NO IDEA why. It looks like a completely different model that's been posed in an attempt to replicate the original render, but the cover on the book's Amazon page uses the better-looking, more dynamically-posed version anyway, and surely they would've had a copy of the original lying around to use instead of recreating the whole thing with a different model, but it's not even the Dex model actually SEEN in the movie, and if the Amazon page used the original render then what was the point in making an entirely new one just for this insanely obscure book catalog, and... and... and... what the hell?

And so with that oddity having left my brain scrambled like an egg, I... gotta stop thinking about Foodfight! for a little while. But rest assured, I'll be back soon! I know a bunch of posts I've made recently seem like filler, but this is a big, BIG year for Foodfight! fans, and with the documentary on the way there's a lot I'm not allowed to talk about just yet. But once it is, the floodgates are open! On top of that, I have another Foodfight! book coming in the mail very soon, one I've been waiting a LONG time to get my hands on... that's right, I'm going to finally be talking about and analyzing the Deluxe Sound Storybook!

One good thing about switching from Acana to Purina Pro Plan is the pupper no longer eats her own poop.

Super excited about the not-eating-poop thing.

Was kind of annoyed because I was unaware of the ingredient changes. Should have seen the recent trend for switching out grains for pulses coming. We moved away from Champion Petfoods since they kept switching the binder (eg. rice, pea, potato) on us depending on the global market prices. And one of our previous dogs was allergic to any starch from root vegetables: sweet potatoes, tapioca, cassava, yam etc. Stopped feeding Acana altogether in winter of 2015. Difficult to find a brand which didn't change ingredients based on market fluctuations! So, wasn't surprised the so-called "grain-free" kibbles found a cheap alternative to keep the prices down.

Just massively disappointed because the first time I heard about Acana was because Orijen (for cats) was the only decent kibbles available for ferrets.

(Believe me, trying to get an imprinted ferret to eat something other than kibbles is a pain.)

What Your Capital of a United World Says About You

In science fiction it's tempting to unite the world. Sure this scenario is a nightmare to the nationalists of the world, but to the rest of us humanity united in exploring the cosmos and building global solidarity is the good ending to the human story. This united world would be a government that can exert actual control and monopolized state violence, unlike the UN, thus it'd have a hierarchy, and the functionaries of this superstate need a place to put their offices and homes, as well as alien worlds needing a place for their embassies, hence a global capital city. As a writer, here's what your capital city says about you, plus some pros and cons to help all others decide where they want their capital.

New York City

You set the world capital where the UN and the largest financial companies in the world are based, in your world humanity united under the broad liberal ideas of freeish markets and democracy. Either the UN took over the world in aide of a global catastrophe, or some other global congress decided to set up shop where the financial and political infrastructure already exists. You're a bit basic for choosing New York City, but I can't fault that.

Pros - Big city feel, surprisingly clean water for a city its size, and half of your American audience will love how you choose their biggest and most important city for the honor.

Cons - It's smelly, NIMBY's will destroy any chance at badass cyberpunk skyscrapers, and the other half of your American audience made being "rural" over 33% of their entire personality and see New Yorkers as a weird fucked up fungus people.

Washington DC

You're an American imperialist pig-dog and you're proud of it, there's no shame in being a pig-dog if you're coming out on top. America's immense military budget was a good investment after all, despite what most economists and philosophers (read, fucking nerds) would say. The flag of your united world has thirteen stripes and just the most stars you can imagine. They say the sky's the limit, but really the limit is the damn moon for you good ol' boy. The world unified after realizing that a life mostly spent in gridlock or turnpike traffic and subsisting on corn products shaped like other foods is the best way to live.

Pros: DC actually has nice monuments and architecture.

Cons: The congress building will have to be megalithic to fit the thousands of senators you'll have to house. Given how herayclean it is to change the constitution at least the House of Representatives keep their size.

Any California (or in the 2020's, Texas, city)

This is the refrain of Cyberpunk rules, where you live in a desert, or as nerds would correct me, something close to the desert (that's still way too dry to support the population to be frank). With the ideal being gleaming skyscrapers, glass towers, and an underground underclass of shanty-dwellers just trying to survive this cruel and unforgiving world. However, in reality, in California and Texas NIMBY's are more organized and militant than some militaries so it's more like endless cookie-cutter HOA dominated suburbs and the underground underclass of shanty-dwellers. I know Texas only became associated with its tech industry in the 1990's, but let's face it in 2023 the only real difference between Texas and Cali is the accent and how annoying the locals are about being from Texas. In your world megacorporations and technocrats rule with a steel fist (literally, because they have scary robot hands) and humanity is united not by government intervention, but by ruthless capitalist expansionism.

Pros - It's sunny, the beaches are perfect in the summer, plenty of desert and farmland for shootin' and ridin', great music scenes, and you can make very fun parodies of Elon.

Cons - You have to live in California or Texas, there are at least two layers of Hell I'd prefer.

Panama City

Hear me out, I know it's rare (I'm sure I just made this up), but can you genuinely name a more "central" place in humanity? It's along the intersections of north and South America, and sailing the canal is the fastest pre-airline way to travel from Asia to Europe or west Africa. Panama, like most of Latin America, is a very diverse country, and Panama gets very few natural disasters. Sure the heat and mosquitos are a lot to deal with, but this country was literally built to connect the world. If you ignore the actually complex history of Panama, that basic meaningless phrase can be treated as a beautiful sentiment.

Pros - Global shipping and a very central location for everyone to meet and cooperate.

Cons - Panama City is small and doesn't have much physical space to expand.

Rio De Janeiro/and Brazilian city

I know Sao Paulo is the biggest city in Brazil, and Brasilia is the capital, but Rio de Janeiro is the most fun to say so I'm just using it as the base template. If you use Rio as your world capital, it means you're Brazilian. I can't think of that many benefits per say of using Rio aside from just wanting a South American or Brazilian world capital, but honestly do we need a reason? Rio is simultaneously a colorful and playful place, but it also holds incredible inequality and a severe violence epidemic. If you want to criticize Brazilian society, as well as show off how fun and lovely it can be, it's a very great setting. Also, realistically any world government would incorporate multiple capitals from all over the world and Rio makes sense as the South American/Latin American capital.

Pros - The fun things I said

Cons - The not-fun things I said.

London

God save the king. Like the DC guy you're an imperialist pig-dog and you wear that label with pride, in OTL Britain's empire fell and the "glory" of the empire is often seen as a propaganda tool to distract from the horrific abuses committed in the name of her majesty's empire. However, if Britain could just unite the world, spay and neuter the French, and convince EVERYONE of her majesty's glory, London would hold the distinction as the home of the world's greatest minds, generals, and politicians. Wouldn't make haggis taste good, but at least Britain will rule the waves.

Pros - Britain will, by default, always bring the World Cup home.

Cons - There's a reason most countries CELEBRATE leaving the British Empire.

Rome

There are two types of people that want Rome to be the global capital. Fundamentalist Catholics and even more fundamentalist Rome or Byzantine nerds. All roads lead to Rome, and it's your philosophy that the Empire shall rise again to unify humanity and harness our spirit to its full potential. Either an ascended Pope to lead the empire of Heaven or a new Augustus

Pros - The "all roads" thing is almost literal if you live in Afro-Euroasia. It's also just badass to imagine yourself as a Roman, but without he whole slavery thing.

Cons - You're limited in the city's cool sci-fi shit when archeologists and UNESCO hogs every dig site. I know Lazio's ground has more artifacts than dirt but it makes building things for the now a Kafkaesque ordeal.

Moscow

The heart of the revolution, Moscow is the natural home to a socialist world where a supreme Soviet ensures housing and work for the "liberated" peoples of the world. In this world the Soviet Union (or Reunion) spreads its tentacles far and wide, overwhelming the capitalist machine and waving the red flag of liberty above every factory and barrack. In your world communism is humanity's goal, space travel is its most ambitious mission, comrade is the go-to gender-neutral pronoun, and there are no rules against steroids at the olympics.

Pros - Pays homage to Lenin's dreams

Cons - It's cold as shit

Istanbul

I'm putting this one on here because it makes sense. Istanbul has many historic and modern marvels and is located exactly where the Muslim and Western worlds border. While many people love to say Istanbul is a "central" location it really isn't in the grand scheme of things. Sure if you mean central in relation to the Middle East and Europe, but as a global capital we need to think of a place that's either historically significant or located where a lot of people are. Istanbul is very historically significant, but I think Istanbul is just a good very big city rather than a place everything should be central to.

Pros - It's a very nice place

Cons - I just don't feel it's "capital of humanity" worthy.

Jerusalem

Home to the Jewish temples, the Temple Mound, and some of the most grade temples in the world, this city is basically THE religion city. Regardless of what Abrahamic religion you choose, if it unified the world as one it'd likely be based here. It's not known for much else, aside from being central in the Israel-Palestine conflict, but I'm sure your world government can solve this conflict with the power of God, patience, and probably extreme violence.

Pros - Very religiously significant

Cons - If you think Israel/Palestine is controversial now...

Shanghai

Picking Beijing is too on-the-nose. You choose a Chinese city because you're either a Chinese patriot or you really buy into the idea of BRICS multipolarity. You want a more blue-collar and humble capital. While Shanghai has plenty of glass towers and cool spots, it's the influencer city in China after all, Shanghai is also the biggest city in China so most Shanghaiers are very average. A lot of factory and dock workers, a lot of service jobs, and a lot of everything really. Even if it is "the big city" there's not much of a reputation for Shanghai, it does practically everything as a large and powerful Chinese megapolis.

Pros - It's a massive and beautiful city.

Cons - It's in China so people on Reddit will call you a fascist if the setting isn't just a giant LiveLeak video. Because Shanghai has so many reputations it can seem generic.

Tokyo

You're probably a weeaboo. Okay, Tokyo is a great city for a retroist cyberpunk setting. Okay, Tokyo is the largest city in the world with loads of economic and diplomatic institutions that makes it one of the most globally important cities on Earth. Okay Tokyo is a beautiful place with amazing cityscapes, historic districts, castles, shinto shrines, and even beautiful mountains outside the city. But we both know you picked Tokyo because you JUST want to be a Mangaka. Besides, if any population would hate being a global capital it'd be the Japanese one.

Pros - Yeah it's a nice place and all.

Cons - You just look like a Dorn, assuming you're not Japanese. If you are Japanese, this choice just says you're basic. Try Osaka as a capital instead, it's just a slightly smaller Tokyo to everyone outside Japan.

New City

As Dante said, the darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality. Granted, he meant that in the context of moral decisions, but the fact that you had to make up a city instead of using one of the great ones that exist for your project shows a lack of commitment and a need to be inoffensive. While someone will always be mad at you when you pick one of these cities, no one will be happy that you pulled one out of your anal cavity to be as perfect and neutral as you want.

Pros - You don't offend anyone

Cons - You don't impress anyone

I'm going to speak from the conservative mind of my American Grandparents: the global GDP is not as important as the US GDP (for those from other countries with a harsh conservative party, go ahead and insert your country's name there; it's all the same). The world and the improvement of it matters so little to conservatives that it may as well not matter at all. Hell GDP barely matters to the profits of the individual. Convincing a government that allows a conservative party to act the way the US does means convincing them that universal income will somehow increase the amount of money in their wallets. The country comes second. Homelessness epidemic? Throw them in for profit prisons. Housing market overinflated? Well why don't you work harder and stop paying for food you like? Hell I've heard my own grandmother state that if we have too many Mexicans at the southern border, we should "just shoot them" which is a disturbing thing for a child of 10 at the time to hear from a woman who was actively shaping his childhood. Conservatives don't care about anyone but themselves. They will watch the world burn under the pile of money the stole and wonder for decades after why they stopped profitting after the population died off.

That said, the research is there. It's right there in front of everyone. The reality is they would profit. They would make more money if everyone had money to spend. The government would still function. Taxes would be "high" (which is a dog whistle for conservatives) and no one would care because you can afford to pass the same $10 back and forth with the government while you work and make more money on a planet that is thriving with air so clean you'd wonder how we breathed for generations. Life can be better, we just need to stop playing ball with people who rigged the game

Giving a regular cash payment to the entire world population has the potential to increase global gross domestic product (GDP) by 130%, according to a new analysis published June 7 in the journal Cell Reports Sustainability. Researchers suggest that charging carbon emitters with an emission tax could help fund such basic income programs while reducing environmental degradation. "We are proposing that if we can couple basic income with environmental protection, we can save two birds with one stone," says first author U. Rashid Sumaila of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
