Glinda Upland is basically Howl. If you see her throwing a major sulking fit, you can be sure something insignificant has transpired to wound her ego. If you see her change the tiniest thing about her appearance, you know sheā€™s down bad.

Just saw Wicked for the second time, and I for once feel very happy to be in this timeline. Itā€™s so good and shows such clear love for the source material. It really shows that making a Wicked adaptation was Jon Chuā€™a dream project for years before landing the role as director. Even the title card is a clear love letter to tradition of movies he is stepping into. The casting is great, next to zero complaints, and Cynthia and Ariana are incredible. While I donā€™t necessarily prefer a closeted lesbian read of Glinda (I donā€™t think the closet exists in Oz and I think her relationship with Fiyero is genuine), Ariana nailed the gay longing and heart eyes that I like to see in a Glinda. Iā€™ve been strapped to the Gelphie train for over a decade, and I donā€™t plan to get off anytime soon.
The movieā€™s not perfect, though, and I do have some complaints. They strip back the instrumentation in a lot of the songs, relying very heavily on percussion (seriously, there is a lot of snare). For a score as iconically epic as Wickedā€™s, the choice is a bit baffling. It exacerbates the jerkiness of the choreography, which is not my favorite. The dancing has a lot of sharp, jarring movements where people are stomping and lunging. Maybe if the music was more orchestral or if the choreography were different or even if they had just chilled it with the stomping folio, it would be fine. But in combination itā€™s not my favorite.
The bit the add in the middle of One Short Day with the Wizomania performance is pretty musically weak for me. It loses the melody and the momentum of what should be a very high energy number. I get the exposition was important, but the only good part of the scene was the cameos (which I wouldnā€™t trade for the world).
In general there are a lot of brakes in the middle of songs for added bits, and while some work for me, others really donā€™t. The repeated interruptions to Defying Gravity devalue the impact a bit. I mean the leads are so talented that they can carry it, but I think the sequence could do with less cutaways to guards running down halls or breaking down doors. I like the idea of slowing several parts of the song, but the cutaways slow down the pacing enough that you kind of start to feel it when they cut the tempo.
The whole span Sentimental Man and the ending of Defying Gravity could be tightened up a bit. Iā€™m happy that they are doing it in two parts, but I think it could have been a 2 hr movie rather than a 2 1/2 hr movie if they stopped trying to make it an action movie.

Thereā€™s a particularly type of post which keeps crossing my dash that goes ā€œI donā€™t think we talk enough about [insert extremely surface level analysis of a piece of media here]ā€. Yeah the reason we donā€™t talk much about it is because itā€™s kind of obvious and thereā€™s. Not actually much to say about it if you have more than a 3rd grade level of lit analysis skills. Anyways-

On the verge of doing a deep dive compare and contrast between both Wicked and Evita being adapted for films because the parallels are RIGHT THERE. In this essay I will
#that same twenty year gap between the shows and the films though#STARTS WITH A DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT OF A MORALLY AMBIGUOUS PROTAGONIST#(i joke. the stage/film version of wicked really isn't even a little bit morally ambiguous#aaand the many many diplomatic negotiations with both Argentina and madonna about preserving Eva's image)#something something Glinda in the second half of Wicked channeling expensively dressed blonde political figurehead#literally the only two musical soundtracks i know inside out#but hilariously i imprinted on the film of Evita at an impressionable age and the show didn't get a west end revival for another decade#ironically that was 2006 when i also saw Wicked for the first time#more importantly the film of evita is based on the concept album rather than the show (and later productions use some film inspired changes)#and wicked the film moves even further away from the original book than the show does#i just have a lot of thoughts okay#and i really do have a terrible fondness for the heightened sepia nostalgia visuals of Evita it's a genuinely beautiful film#alan parker knows his shit#is it ~good~? i mean idk that that's quantifiable#i find it more watchable than the 2006 show revival#(also. also. Antonio Banderas. that is all.)#i think it uses screen space and the hinted at spaces beyond the stage much better than Wicked does in the film version#also? Evita is just allowed to be consistently snarky (because Che) and they kinda... stripped some of the snark from Wicked for the film.#i remain baffled by Choices.#(my new favourite Evita trivia is that both Meryl Streep and Michelle Pfeiffer were signed to star at various points and the CHOICES)

ever since i saw wicked, i've been saying i can't wait for part 2 and cynthia and ariana to make me take "for good" seriously. because my first ever exposure to wicked AND "for good" was in the sixth grade when my chorus teacher had us sing it at an end of year concert, like, to our teachers. despite having seen the stage show twice since then, i have never been able to take "for good" seriously because in my head it's always like oh this is a song about how great teachers are (and obviously that wouldn't fucking work in wicked). it's like one of my least favorite songs from the show (i remember like 3 songs from part 2), and i can't take it seriously as a love ballad right now. but i was (am) sure that part 2 will change this and make my little gay heart explode
and then. they changed the fucking title to WICKED: FOR GOOD?!
farewell i fear i will never take this song seriously šŸ’”
