Frederick’s Historic District Ghost Tours

Take a journey through Frederick’s frightening past – nearly 300 years of war, executions, and personal revenge. This Rated PG-13 tour includes “true, documented” stories of the paranormal and is purported to be Maryland’s oldest operating ghost tour. Tours are 90 minutes and cover 1.2 miles. I have been honored to be part of the National Museum of Women in the Arts's 'DMV COLOR Book Art by Women of Color' exhibition. The District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia—known locally as the DMV—is a fertile center of art-making for women of color of diverse heritages. Washington, D.C. and its surroundings have long been home to a rich community of artists of color, ranging from those born and raised here to others who built connections to the region as short-term residents. The exhibition DMV Color features an eclectic assortment of contemporary works by women of African American, Asian American, and Latina heritage. The artists’ books, graphic novels, photobooks, and zines depict intimacies of family life, legacies of enslavement, effects of rampant development, dislocation and newfound freedoms tied to immigration, and other topics.

This exhibition is up now till March 4th 2020. You will find my work along with works of 18 other female artists based in DMV area. Please visit this awesome museum!

Last month, I had an amazing opportunity to paint a mirror for the LINE HOTEL's restaurant, A Rake's Progress in Adam's morgan, DC. If you haven't been to this hotel, I highly recommend checking it out for their excellent decor and fine dining experience. This painting will be up until the end of this month, then it'll be erased for me to paint a new winter-themed painting on December 2nd, which will be up till the end of this year. Summary: About an unexpected reunion, of two former lovers, years later since they last met and how life has changed for each of them.

Characters: Fem!reader, Clint Barton, Pepper Potts…

Like any other morning, Y/N went running through the busy and lively streets of New York City. Once she finished her usual tour, she decided to stop by the small but very popular coffee shop of her very good friend Pepper, ‘Virginia’s’. She decided not to break with her habits and asked for the same thing as always.

“Good morning, Y/N/N,” Pepper said as she saw her young, almost sister, friend entering in the small place.

“Good morning to you too, future Mrs. Stark.” greeted back Y/N as she took off her headphones and focus on the pastries in the cozy cafeteria.

“I see you didn’t skip the early morning run today, huh?” Pepper asked as she approached the counter and smiled at Y/N.

“Never.” He denied this one while laughing.  “Please give me an American with cream and a honey, to go, ya know. Oh! And one of those Swiss rolls! How good they look, for God’s sake…” she whispered the last part.

“On it, girl.” said the blonde woman.

“You know, Peps. For some it’s caffeine and for others it’s nicotine what they’re addicted to, for me it’s running in the morning. Which, by the way, is why I did it earlier today.”

“And why is that?”

“Because you and I had agreed to go with Natasha, Wanda, Nebula and Gamora to get the bridesmaids’ dresses for your wedding. Did you forget already?”

“So it seems…” said Pepper, she held one hand to her face and leaned against the wall. "Oh, shit. It was today…“

"Yeah.” laughed Y/N at the sight of her friend’s face. "Oh! And don’t forget it’s your engagement dinner, too.“

"Oh, no! I forgot that too,” said the cafeteria owner as she finished organizing the order for her friend, who was holding on to her stomach because of the laughter. “Stop laughing at me, Y/N!”

“I’m sorry, but you just have to look at your face, really. It’s all a poem.”

After she had managed to control the brief fit of laughter that had entered her, Y/N set out to leave the cafeteria when suddenly heard someone call her from one of the tables in the place, thus making her take a look at the origin of that voice.

At that moment  it seemed that Y/N’s heart was going to stop.

“Clint. Hi…” she whispered as she saw the man rising from his place and was approaching her.

“Y/N. Long time no see.” Clint said with a smile as he put his hands in his pants pockets, not without giving the girl a hug first.

“I didn’t know… That you were back.” tried the girl to speak normally as she looked at the coffee and Swiss roll in her hands.

“Well, it’s about time. Plus I’m just in time for the wedding,” shrugged Barton.

“Uhm…. So it seems.” she whispered.  “Then I’ll see you. See you tonight,” Y/N said as she tried to escape from the place.

“Wait. Stay…”

“I’m sorry, but I must hurry, Clint.” Y/N tried to make an excuse.

“Please.” Clint begged as he watched her leave. "Just stay as long as it takes you to drink your coffee.“

"Okay…” she whispered and went with Clint to the table he had been at before.

“How’s everything going? How are your siblings?” asked the man before taking a sip of his coffee.

“They are all right. Pietro is recovering from knee surgery, which was done two months ago, after he broke his knee in an athletic competition. Wanda is expecting her second baby with Viz, and I…. I’m working as a paramedic with Sam and Scott." Y/N explained the situation to Clint. "What about you? How are you doing?”

“Good.” Clint laughed and said, “I travelled around Asia, stayed in Thailand for a few years and came back a few weeks ago.  Now I work at the store with my father.”

“Do you work in the fruit shop? With your father?”

“Yes…” said the man as he nodded slowly.

Y/N laughed briefly at the sound of that. "Well, it’s hard to believe, yes.“

"I know, I know…” Clint admitted before sipping his coffee, once more.

“It’s just that you always said that it was impossible and that it wasn’t meant for you.”

“Well there you have it.” Barton whispered as he looked intently at Y/N.

“So what happened?” she asked, drinking her coffee to go.

“You know, while traveling in Asia….  Thailand made me fall in love, I stayed there for a couple of years and when I returned home, I didn’t have… Anything. I needed to work. And since I still can’t live on of what I write… But, let’s say, that working as fruiter is not so bad, eh.”

Y/N looked down at her hands and nodded, as she bit her lower lip and listened to Clint speak. She was playing with her fingers too, until Clint took her by the hand, making her look him in the eye.

“Who would have thought…!” the young woman suddenly said.

“Well, that’s not all. I’ve quit smoking,” admitted the fruit vendor proudly as he drew a small smile on his face.

“No!” Y/N said incredulously. “Really?  That’s a hell of a lot harder to believe.”

“Six months I’ve been at it. I’m telling ya.”

“Congratulations then.”

At that moment, the silent reigned until Y/N couldn’t stand the slight tension that had formed and decided to break it.

“Are you seeing anyone?” she asked taking her hand away from Clint’s and drank her own coffee.

“Yes,” said the man in a sigh.

Y/N smiled nervously at him. "And I know her?“

"Not at all,” he denied. “I met her in Bangkok. She was a globetrotter, like me.  She’s from Portugal.”

“How romantic…” whispered the girl with a sweet smile. "And she’s come to live here because of you?“

"Yes, she did that. ” said Clint, looking blankly at the scenery he saw through the huge window of the coffee shop.

“She must be very much in love with you.” Y/N said.

“Well, that’s what she says…” joked the guy as he looked back at the woman sitting in front of him, who laughed slightly at his response.

Clint took one of his hands to the face of his old acquaintance, and stroked it carefully. "Are you happy?“ he asked as he wiped away the tears that now flowed down Y/N’s cheeks.

She was unable to answer his question, simply grimaced and answered him with a question. "And you? Are you happy?”

He was also unable to respond to her. All he could do was squeeze both hands tightly on her as she sighed. "I…  I have something to tell you.“

For a moment Y/N’s eyes filled with hope and longing, until someone knocked the window glass and caught Clint’s attention.  A woman with brown hair and eyes greeted him from the other side of the window, as she had a smile drawn on her face. That same woman who greeted him, went to the door of the place to enter it.

Y/N separated her hands from Clint’s and noticed the beauty of that woman. She was radiant, with a slightly pink skin. With a bright, warm smile that highlighted the dimples that formed on her cheeks.

"Hello,” said the woman who had just arrived as she approached to greet Clint.

“How are you?” he asked to the woman as he posed a kiss on her lips.

Without a doubt, what most caught Y/N’s attention of that scene was the huge belly that reflected how far along that beautiful woman’s pregnancy was. Y/N’d be lying if she said she didn’t feel hurt and betrayed at that exact moment.

“Look who I ran into. She’s Y/N." Clint introduced Y/N.

"Oh, how are you? I heard a lot about you,” said the Portuguese woman as she hugged Y/N. “I’m Laura.”

“How are you feeling today?” Clint asked Laura as he touched her baby bump.

“Good, very good. But today is a cold morning,” said Laura as stroked her belly too.

Y/N had run out of words, she didn’t know how to react or what to think about what was happening and the amount of information her head was processing.

“Well, now I really have to go. I have to get ready to help finish organizing Pepper’s wedding,” Y/N said as she finished her Swiss roll and got up of her chair again. "Nice to have met you. And may everything go well.“ she told Laura, as she looked at her belly again.

"Thank you.” said Clint’s girlfriend with a big, sweet smile.

“Be very happy. Both… Well the three of you.” said the young woman before heading to the door of the place and getting ready to leave.

Y/N looked one last time in the direction of Clint, who was looking at her with a sad and longing look. One that expressed everything they felt for each other that could not be said. A look that also reflected their yearning to know what would have happened with them if they had not made the decisions they made.

Once Y/N left the cafeteria, she allowed herself to shed all those tears she had been holding back for a long time. She just stopped in front of the pedestrian crossing, waiting for the light to turn green as soon as possible, so that she could leave the place as soon as possible and get as far away from Clint as possible.

She felt selfish about feeling that way. And that was what she did abhors with her whole being.

“Fuck.” cursed as she watched the clear morning sky and wiped away the tears.  “Shit…” said in a weak sigh.

“Y/N!”

She turned and watched Clint at the cafeteria door, watching at her as he walked slowly toward her, who still looked at him with tears in her eyes and a sad smile. Once Clint stood in front of Y/N, he reached out and gave her her mobile phone and a small picture.

“You forgot this.” the man said with a small smile as he looked at the little picture he was giving his former lover.

“This is not mine.” she whispered while watching the picture he handed.

In the photo Clint and Y/N laughed as they hugged each other and were surrounded by Pietro, Wanda and all their closest friends. They all smiled in the picture and appeared doing silly and random things.

That was a beautiful night, Y/N thought with a little smile.

“I’ve always carried it with me in my wallet. I’ve been carrying it around since we took it off at your brother’s wedding."  Barton explained to Y/N. "I watched it from time to time… When I missed you so or when I thought about those good times we had. It was really a comfort to have it, back then in Asia,” he laughed.

“Thank you, Clint. I’ll take a good care of it.” Y/N said, while pulling a lock of hair away from her face and looked up to see Clint in the eyes.

They stayed for a short while enjoying the sound of the busy city and a gentle breeze of air, until Clint grabbed Y/N by the shoulders and drew her into his arms, to embrace her tightly. They clung tightly to each other, while Clint breathed in the smell of her shampoo, and Y/N memorized his cologne. The one that once made her feel at home. The one that still made her feel that way.

Once they split up, they didn’t say anything. They looked into each other’s eyes with tears, as intensely as if it was the first time. As if nothing had changed… even if the reality was the opposite.

Guide to Kettler

Since a lot of you have been asking how to meet some of the Capitals, I decided to make a guide to their practice facility!

Kettler Capitals Iceplex is located in Arlington, Virginia on the 8th floor of the parking garage connected to the Ballston Common Mall. There are two entrances: the player entrance (pictured above) and the entrance from the parking garage elevators. There are two rinks, with a cafe and team store in between. 

To make this guide easy, I’ll go over practices, meeting the players, and other stuff like that!

Practices

On game days, the Caps have morning skates which usually begin at 10:15-10:30 and last about 30 minutes. On normal practice days, the Caps have practice anywhere from 10:30 to 12:30 (but it can sometimes be earlier or later depending on the day). Normal practices last about an hour. During these practices, they go over various drills, line combos, etc. The Caps start on the Arlington rink (rink closest to the elevators) and finish on the Capitals rink (near the player entrance). At the Arlington rink, fans can stand around the glass and watch the Caps practice like during warmups. At the Capitals rink, fans can either stand around the glass or sit in the stands and watch. I recommend standing near the glass cause its fun and sometimes you can interact with the players.

Meeting the Players: Player Entrance

After the practices, you can wait outside of the player entrance and hopefully meet some of your faves. This usually takes quite awhile, roughly about 1-2 hours depending on the team’s schedule. After practice, the players will shower, change, do media, eat, etc. so it takes awhile for the players to start coming out. 

You can usually scope out who is going to come out of the player entrance based on whose cars are parked on the 8th level of the garage. Players like TJ Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom, Matt Niskanen, Lars Eller, etc. don’t typically park on the 8th level due to privacy (if you’re lucky you can catch Nicky on a gameday like I did, but it is rare). Players like Andre Burakovsky, Tom Wilson, Braden Holtby, etc. typically park on the 8th level, so you can usually catch them if you stand outside the player entrance. Occasionally, players will have security or Kettler staff move their cars to a lower level to avoid fans. You’ve gotta remember, they are people just like us and they deserve privacy and respect like everyone else. 

Sometimes you can go down to the 7th level of the parking garage and meet players, but I don’t recommend doing that. Most likely if players are parking on that level it’s because they want privacy. Security also might tell you to leave if you’re standing on the 7th level waiting for players. 

Meeting the Players: The Barricade

Beside the Capitals rink is a media area. Next to the media area is a barricade where fans can stand and wait for players to come over after they leave the ice. This is a great opportunity to meet some players that may not come out of the player entrance (TJ Oshie, Jakub Vrana, Madison Bowey, etc.) This is a great place to meet players; however, it’s hard to meet people here. Most of the time players are ready to leave the ice and shower or there’s an interview going on and they don’t want to interrupt. I don’t normally stand at the barricade because most players don’t stop, but you can always try and meet some players that way! 

Meeting the Players: Etiquette 

Just like you, these guys are normal people! When they come out of the entrance, don’t bombard them - they’ll come to you. Be kind and don’t be too pushy. When you go up to them, ask them how they’re doing, ask about the game later that night, or just say something nice. If they don’t stop, don’t be mean or say something rude; they probably have somewhere to be or want to rest up for the game. And if they rush to get through all the fans, take a picture quickly or have them sign something and let them move on to the next person - the other fans have been waiting just as long as you have. If the player tries to go past all the fans and looks like they’re trying to leave quickly - let them. I’ve been to Kettler before when players have tried to get to their car to leave and fans follow them and don’t let them leave. Don’t be that person, it’s rude and quite frankly annoying. 

Meeting the Players: Development Camp/Capitals Fanfest

Every year in late June/early July, the Capitals have their development camp. During the camp, they have a Fanfest where you can meet some of the Capitals prospects and Alumni. This is a great opportunity to meet some of the young guys and Alumni that you don’t normally get to see. During Fanfest, there are games, vendors, photo opportunities, and sometimes a scrimmage! 

Most of the players that come to development camp are either draftees or Hershey Bears players, so its a great time to meet players if you can’t make a drive to Hershey. 

I prefer to meet the rookies because the atmosphere is a lot better and they’re so laid back. Plus, you can chat with the rookies a bit longer since camp is done for the day. 

Other Tips

Just a few more tips:

1. It does cost money to park in the parking garage, so just make sure you bring a few bucks (it usually costs about $3-6 depending on how long you stay).

2. If you don’t bring a sharpie, don’t fret! The team store usually has some for sale or you can ask another fan if you can borrow theirs. 

3. Bring drinks or snack with you. If you plan on waiting outside for players, you’re going to be waiting a few hours, so it’s nice to have snacks or water just in case.

4. Bring a phone charger! The worst thing is wanting to take a pic with your fave and your phone dies.

5. Make new friends! It’s always fun to meet other fans and become friends.

Celebrate the Holidays - 2017

It’s finally cooling down here in Atlanta after a long and steamy summer, so now that Halloween has come and gone, it’s time to look ahead to fun holiday events in Atlanta! Some are must-do decades-long traditions, some are new ones to add to your list. Light displays, shows, shopping, and more.

Atlanta has something for everyone, so don’t miss out this holiday season!

Light Displays:

Garden Lights, Holiday Nights - Atlanta Botanical Gardens. 11/11- 1/7/2018 5-10pm. $13+ (non-members). Over 1 million lights and 200 show-stopping color changing topiaries transform the garden into a must-do holiday event. Enjoy a new feature this year, Nature's Wonders, illuminating the world's natural phenomena through countless strands of synchronized dancing lights strung high over Storza Wood. Coming back this year are the Walk of Flame, Tunnel of Light, Orchestral Orbs, Glittering Galaxy, Radiant Rainforest, and Model Trains that continue to make the exhibition a must-see holiday tradition. Ticketing options include a Premium Ticket (3D glasses & drink ticket included) and a Flex Ticket, in case your plans change. For adults who can stay up a later, the cheapest ticket is a walk-up after 9pm for $13.95, but only gives you an hour to see everything. Highly recommend buying tix in advance to secure family plans on premium nights/weekends.

Magical Night of Lights - Lake Lanier. 11/17- 1/3/18. $35+ per car. This year the 25th anniversary display celebrates the 12 Days of Christmas!  7 miles of lights, Snowflake Bridge, holiday village, Santa, Petting Zoo, Carnival Rides, s’mores, and more. 

Fantasy in Lights - Callaway Gardens. 11/17-1/6/2018. $10.50+. Named “Top 10 Places to See Holiday Lights,” as named by National Geographic Traveler, experience an amazing light and sound show! 8 million lights, 15 scenes, Christmas Village with kids activities, Grinch Holiday Dinner Show, Character Breakfast, Story Time with Mrs. Claus, pictures with Santa, shopping, and train rides. Also check out the specialty nights.

Lights of Life - Marietta/Life University. 11/23- 12/31. $5-$10. One of the most affordable and always delightful light displays OTP, check out Life University’s iconic holiday scenes in lights. The 65 foot tall rendition of Santa and his sleigh is the tallest display in the Southeast!

Ice Skating Rinks:

Skate at Atlantic Station - 11/18 kick off. $10+. right in the heart of Midtown - enjoy the largest outside ice skating rink in town! Unlimited skating and skate rental included. Make a day of it with shopping, eats, Santa’s Cottage, and ice skating. The lighting of the AS tree happens on 11/18 to kick off the holiday season. 

Avalon on Ice - 11/19-1/21/18. $14+, includes skates. Spend the day shopping and skating at Avalon in Alpharetta! Holiday festivities kick off on 11/19 with the lighting of the tree and the arrival of Santa. Also offered, private skating lessons, skate school, private party rental, and a Disco Skate Party on 1/14!

Skate the Sky at Ponce City Market - 11/20-12/31. $15/$8 + rooftop admission. New skating rink opens this year at Skyline Park and enjoy games, eats and drinks.

St. Regis Astor Holiday Rink - 11/24 - 1/1/2018. $18-$30 per hour. Reservations recommended for this upscale skating experience with holiday tunes, s'mores, and hot chocolate.

Adults Only:

Invasion: Christmas Carol - Dad’s Garage Theatre. 12/1 - 12/30. $17.50+. The ultimate holiday improv experience, what happens when a new character gets introduced to a classic tale? With new characters added each night - each show is unique and will keep you laughing all month long!

Miracle on Monroe. 11/24-12/24. Holiday themed pop-up bar was a big hit last year and is back with TWO locations, one in Midtown and the new second spot in Buckhead! Fun cocktails, the bar’s ‘halls’ are decked to the max and patrons can enjoy themed cocktails in custom Miracle glassware including Santa’s Pants mugs and reindeer Collins glasses. 

The Santaland Diaries - Horizon Theatre. 11/17 - 12/31. $25+. Hilarious David Sedaris holiday play about the life of a department store elf. Always a fun night out - check out the cool VIP Experience offered that features reserved seating & holiday beverage.

12 Dates of Christmas - Aurora Theatre. 11/25-12/23. $20+. Laugh off the stress of shopping and family hijinks with this new comedy show about dating craziness & the holidays. Amazing one-woman show.

Atlanta Santa Speedo Run - Midtown. 12/9 2pm. One of the most hilarious ways to raise $ for an amazing local charity. Proceeds benefit Bert’s Big Adventure!

Family-Friendly:

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer - Center for Puppetry Arts. 11/7 - 12/31. $11.25+. One of the hottest tickets in town for families, don’t wait to get yours as they will sell out. This year also features a Create-A-Puppet Workshop™ to create a King Moonracer™ Rod and String Puppet. Your ticket also gives you access to the Worlds of Puppetry Museum.

Wake Up Santa - Georgia Aquarium. 11/18 9-10:30am. $9.95+. Kids can help ‘wake up’ Santa with fun activities, hot cocoa bar, cookies and of course photos with the Jolly One. Reserve your spot online! 

A Christmas Carol - Aurora Theatre. 11/24 - 12/23. $20+. Those outside the perimeter can also check out a local production of the classic holiday tale in Gwinnett! This performance is a one-man show starring Anthony P. Rodriguez. his 11th year using classical storytelling to bring you into the world of Charles Dickens. 

Madeline’s Christmas - Horizon Theatre. 12/2- 12/31. $12-$15. The little girl from Paris embarks on a holiday adventure! Family-friendly holiday favorite.

The Nutcracker by The Atlanta Ballet - The Fox Theatre. 12/8 -12/28. $21+. Classic holiday ballet that is a must-see every season! Stunning performance by Atlanta’s best dancers. Runs 2 hours with a 25 minute intermission.

A Christmas Carol - Alliance Theatre. 12/8 - 12/24. $24+. A performance of the classic Christmas tale that features live music and ATL-based actors that always deliver an amazing experience. Create a new holiday tradition for your family today, best enjoyed by ages 5 and up. Performances sell out quickly, so get your tickets ASAP!

A Charlie Brown Christmas - Venkman’s. 12/10 and 12/17 6-7p. $5pp. Get into the holiday spirit with this family-friendly live musical performance of the score for the classic Peanuts special.

Cookies with Santa - Zoo Atlanta. 12/2-3. $12+. Sign up for one of 4 time slots each day - 8:30am (members only), 10:30am, 12:30p, 2:30p. $10+. Tix sell out fast, so get yours ASAP. Kids can meet Santa, enjoy cookies and hot cocoa!! Also, crafts, costume characters and caroling.

A Victorian Holiday - Oakland Cemetery. 12/2 11-4pm. $6+. Tickets go on sale 11/4. Enjoy a day in this historic park with a Holiday Artists Market, carolers, historic crafts (Victorian Ornaments) cocoa, and a special mausoleum tour. Attendees will have the chance to meet Saint Nicholas himself and also purchase one of Oakland’s signature Balsam fir wreaths. Step back into time with costumed characters that will bring the past of Atlanta to life.

Virginia Highlands Tour of Homes. 12/2-3. $25+. Children 10 and under are free. Tour 8 gorgeous homes and shop locally for holiday gifts. ICE Holiday Shopping Extravaganza - 11/18-19. $5. This is a very cool holiday expo featuring handmade gifts from 175+ local/regional vendors. Free swag bags for the first 250 attendees each day! Soaps, clothing, artwork, jewelry and more! Photo booth, local food vendors, gift wrapping station and all kinds of fun. A must in Atlanta! Holiday Pop-Up shop opens 11/9.

SCOUT IS OUT! We had the best time celebrating with friends, family and our fabulous Volume 8 members at the Launch Party! The lovely and talented ladies of the ALG Collective opened up their gorgeous working studio and gallery space in the Design District for the event. Their colorful artwork, along with the vibrant florals and fun rentals by Jackson Durham, set the festive tone for the evening. Guests sipped Mi Cocina Mambo Taxi’s and enjoyed passed hors d'oeuvres by FGF Catering while mingling and checking out the new guide.

Real Richmond Wedding: Jessica and Ricky’s Blush Wedding

How They Met Ricky and Jessica first met in 2009 during Ricky’s fraternity formal in Virginia Beach. Jessica explains, “He instantly made me laugh, which is easily one of my favorite qualities about him.” It wasn’t until a few years later when they actually started dating. Their first date was watching “Tangled,” a movie they have since seen about 30 times (Jessica’s favorite).

The Proposal Ricky proposed to Jessica at Maymont in the Italian Garden. “I’m pretty hard to surprise. I ask too many questions and want to know too many details about whatever we’re planning to do.” But Ricky was one step ahead. One Sunday, Ricky suggested going to Maymont and casually dropped that Jessica should put on a dress. Ricky had some family in town so Jessica thought nothing of it.  (Except that Ricky’s shirt was tucked in, a little unusual.) As they made their way through, Jessica noticed a photographer and happened to love her shirt. She struck up a conversation and the photographer asked if she could test her camera on them. While taking some photos, Ricky bent down to tie his shoe and pulled out the ring box. “I think he told me he loved me and may have had to tell me to stop talking so he could ask me.” Kathryn, their photographer, captured the precious moment when Jessica said “yes!”

The Details Jessica, a Richmond Weddings

vendor (RVA Homes with Jess), knew exactly what she wanted from her big day. “We didn’t have a theme so much as we had elements we wanted to include. Wood tones, hints of gold and mercury glass, greenery, and a simple color palette.”

Jessica really wanted Ricky to stand out from the rest of the groomsmen, so they decided he would wear a lighter gray, while the rest of his guys were in navy. To add a special, personal touch, they added an embroidered monogram to each of the ensembles. “I had a friend of mine embroider my maiden monogram under a layer of my dress, and I had Ricky’s wedding day tie embroidered with our phrase, ‘You’re My Favorite'”

The food was especially important. They wanted their guests to feel like they were sitting at a dinner party eating their favorite dishes. Jessica hand drew the seating chart, bar designs, and cake table signs giving their cozy reception a personal touch.

Favorite Part of the Day Jessica’s favorite part of the day was after the ceremony where it was just the two of them reveling in the moment they just experienced. Ricky’s favorite? “You know that moment where everyone stares at the groom, waiting for his reaction? The moment right after when they turned and saw how beautiful Jessica looked. How amazing they thought she looked is how I think she looks every day.”

Biggest Challenge “Limiting the guest count. We both went to VCU and then to separate graduate schools, and we have pretty large families, so it was hard to narrow down the guest list.”

Best Piece of Advice The newlyweds have two pieces of advice. One, determine your top three things that are important to you, then let the rest figure itself out. And two, select quality vendors. “These are the people you are with all day, who make your wedding what it is. Choose wisely!”
