Watched this with the oomf @yurisorcerer, I came across it multiple years ago and cannot remember where (my best guess is it qualifying as a magical girl anime for the mahou shoujo achievement on MAL graph?) and just yesterday as I was clearing my plan to watch for funsies I decided to torrent this so I could have it watched and thus remove another ptw entry.
It was fucking incredible! What the fuck! Like I didn't go into this expecting it to be bad I had no preconceived notions of what it was even about it's just the score was kinda low and I was like "if it's good it'll be like 6 or 7 good" but nah this shit was awesome, awesome to such a degree that I'm almost mad I hadn't already seen it before, and now I'm mad that it released so long ago that the fucking blu-ray is long out of print and sold for way more money than I'm willing to part with. Joy to be found at least in having shared this experience with a friend whom, spoilers for her presumed post (unless she posts before I do anyway) also really enjoyed it.
Elaborating a bit more specifically, I'd really say this movie is split into three acts. The intro gives us an overview of lead pair Dual and Dorothy, how their setting works, and how it's about to be changed with the introduction of Remo. The start's cool if a little slow, but there's magical girl adjacent action in a visually appealing cyber-world with fucky gravity and shit. I was already having fun here. Midsection of the movie sees Dual and Dorothy having become genuine friends with Remo, and there's a ton of genuinely adorable slice of life and character building antics here. The two music montages in a row are both particularly peak. There's a weird bit in the middle of said montages that shows the destruction of humanity and overwhelming dread of war - it works with what the movie is actually about thematically although I get the sense it was meant to be a little longer. We're still very good though. At this point 6 isn't even on the table for score anymore, and I'm genuinely having a lot of fun. And then we get our final act, which I can't even begin to succinctly describe and can really only say that the stakes go crazy, the plot goes crazier, and it was one of the best endings I've seen in what feels like forever. Absolutely incredible. Shot the movie up to an 8. I cannot stress enough that the movie is already pretty solid by this point and then just becomes peak beyond reason. Phenomenal.
Will say more broadly that the literary idea of computers continuing after human extinction is a common idea, but I gotta say this movie executed on said idea in a much more optimistic manner than I usually see, and I think the plot itself and how we get to all this comes together in a really nice way. Like the ending isn't just epic and emotional it's also naratively satisfying and thematically well justified. This movie being such a uniquely particular vibe would be enough for me to find it passively interesting already but being as generally well written as it is does a lot as well. Fuckin, really liked this thing.
Only drawback is count how many times it fades to black though lol.

Watched this with the oomf @joshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, basically on a whim from the both of us. It's an hourish long movie and we weren't really expecting much especially given that it has a fairly low score on most anime ranking websites. Surprisingly though, it's actually really fucking good? I'd describe this as sort of a loose, less polished cousin of Flip Flappers, if anything. Several editing decisions give away that this is probably the remains of what was originally a slightly longer project, but even that in mind, what's here is amazingly coherent and just very strong overall.
Our basic conceit involves magical girls who live inside a computer (already a very good starting point), and early parts of the film feel decidedly Madoka-inspired (not a term I use lightly), but it quickly goes off in its own direction and starts dealing with these very big themes of self-determination and humanity. It's also a surprisingly spiritual film in a way that I find difficult to precisely pin down; something about the promise of humanity living on through the things we create feels that way to me.
Visually, lots of interesting use of space and color; a non-zero amount of the film takes place in a blue void filled with CGI spirals that characters nonetheless stand on like it's nothing, there's also some great use of monochrome and near-monochrome and a lot of absolutely picturesque landscape shots. I could make a few minor complaints---namely the editing, and I think a certain kind of person will be bothered by the presence of some fanservice especially in the later parts of the movie---but overall I really liked this and highly recommend it if anything I just said sounds interesting to you.

OKAY this might be a really stupid question, but I adore magical girl anime, and I’ve really been in the mood for like… a darker/more adult (?) magical girl show… But sooo many of those are like, really bad. Do you have any recommendations for ones that are good? 😭
On the lighter end, maybe ArtisWitch? It's short & episodic but some of the later episodes explore some more complex themes.
Somewhere in the back streets of Ura-Harajuku, a witch and her mysterious shop serve those whose wishes have gone unheard, giving them an opportunity to unlock their hearts' greatest desires. Believing this to be an ideal arrangement, the proud apprentice witch Nina strives to fulfill her customers' wishes while her power and influence grow accordingly. However, not all wishes are meant to come true—and not all of them lead to a happy ending. As Nina is compelled to peer deeper into the human psyche, she soon discovers the dark side of a witch's obligations, and her ambitions begin to clash with her wish to comfort the entire world.
Another short one is the movie "Glass no Hana to Kowasu Sekai" (shortened to "Garakowa") it barely counts as magical girl but the leads outfits are so reminiscent of magical girl outfits I'm pretty sure that's what they were going for
Dual and Dorothy are two programs. Their job is to enter the various worlds containing the memories of people across many timelines, deleting worlds that become infected with viruses. They come across Remo, a girl who has lost memory of who she is, who is searching for "the flower garden." However, they soon begin to learn not only about Remo's true purpose but also about the state of the world outside.
Last one is sort of a half-recommendation, because while I think it's a compelling story with good visuals, I think a lot of it's messages are complete baloney. It's Earth Girl Arjuna! It's pretty environmental heavy, which is fine but the solutions it proposes are uh, not good. If you wanna really dissect something that's good weird at best and "what the hell no??" at worst, give it a shot (also warning for the pro-life messages in episode 9)
The series follows Juna Ariyoshi, a high school girl chosen to be the "Avatar of Time" and entrusted with saving the dying Earth.

Watched Glass no Hana to Kowasu Sekai, a movie about anti-virus programs in form of magical girls. The plot was pretty interesting so it was disappointing to see the directing lag so far behind, with many weird choices like two insert song montages back-to-back and more awkward fade-to-black transitions than I cared to count. The visuals also were a bit lacking; while the animation was decent, the overall visual style felt very flat. Although I have to hand it to the occasional horror imagery, which was effectively used. I feel like in right hands this could’ve been a good movie, but as it is it’s just average overall. I have to admit the end was moving though, although I’d say it was 80% thanks to Ayaneru’s great voice acting.

Garakowa - Restore The World
Glass no Hana to Kowasu Sekai
Rating: 2/3
Categories: original work, sci fi, slice of life, virtual reality
Dual and Dorothy are antivirus programs that live in the stored data of the entire world’s history. They are responsible for seeking out world’s infected by viruses and deleting them to prevent the spread. One day they encounter a girl much like them who’s first words are “I have to return to the flower garden” but even she does not know what they mean.

This one I fell in love with because seriously, she's fucking adorable. Sadly... Or...maybe not sadly but I feel kind of wrong I never finished the movie because it was confusing and I wasn't in the mood but I will make sure I watch it now just because of geeky principle.
