These two need to meet up in the next visit to Bloomburrow. Perhaps Glarb already knows Archelos and that's where he runs off to. Glarb's ability works on Archelos if the latter is on the top of your library. Someone play both of them in the same deck!

Hi! I'm building King Glarb with a heavy focus on free and discounted spells so I can just keep pulling them off the top. Any cool tech you can think of?
Instead of individual cards let me think of mechanics that can allow you to cast spells for cheaper alternate costs while maintaining a higher mana value for Glarb...
Evoke, Delve, Convoke, Improvise, the strixhaven Mastery cycle, Cleave, Emerge, More Than Meets the Eye, Freerunning, and a couple more like Spectacle that don't have good cards that fit the colors and restrictions. I'd encourage to dig into those to see if you can find any gems, they're not free spells, but they're the next best thing and we quickly get through with those.
Given that you're likely playing Peregrine Drake and all its land-untapping friends, you get access to some classic combos there with Deadeye Navigator if you want.
Alternatively...
If you already have a future sight commander and are playing all the free spells you can, probably can prepare a Doomsday win of some kind, even just by casting spells, easy to figure out a stack if you have four free spells to cast to get a bit of mana and finish off with an oracle or a combo of some kind.
If that is NOT the vibe, which I understand perfectly, although free spells tend to pull things towards more combo stuff, there are other candidates...
Sadly most of the free spells aren't creatures, but with all the evoke stuff (including Subtlety and Grief), there's plenty to do with a free recursion (every turn, for Hua Tuo). In a normal deck, needing to draw the card is quite the downside, but you don't need to do that in this deck and get access to the card immediately. Sadly, neither of them are MV 4+.
Oh, and, for the road:

Re: is Cruelclaw really Tezzeret?
I suggest this due to some observations/story beats.
-Scars over his bad eye could be Tezzeret’s Bolas-branded tattoos on his face, “Bloomburrowed (i.e. transformed upon planeswalking to Bloomburrow)”
-“Cruelclaw” is most likely not his real name. Tezzeret has/had his etherium arm, which may have been “Bloomburrowed” into being something which got him the moniker
-We have not seen Tezzeret in a while, perhaps this is how/where he has been lying low?
-The fact that he was working for Glarb to cause planar distress calls back to his mercenary days
-Once again, he escapes accountability
Just a hunch. Thought you’d like it.
Actually, the moment I answered the ask, I clicked over to Twitter and found that we just got his card previewed. Definitely not Tezzeret! Although I'd love to see a Bloomburrow version of Tezzeret.
Note: Ral Zarek and Tezzeret have history, the confrontation at King Glarb's palace would have been a lot more important if it had been him.

“What is this!”
Glarb sighed and turned back to face the rabbit footsoldier behind him. “What is what, Corporal Kendall?”
The rabbitfolk shoved a pawful of plain carrots in the frog monarch’s face. “My rations, sir! They seem to be rather…lacking.”
“Budget constraints. Good soldiers make do.”
“Do they!” Kendall exclaimed. “Well, maybe I could make do, with some moxie. But…how am I supposed to work now, knowing the crown can’t even afford to keep me in room and board?”
Glarb’s eyes flicked upward in exasperation.
—
A shrill whistle echoed across the plain. The other rabbitfolk bounded towards the noise, where Kendall sat preparing a meal for the troops. With a laugh, he raised a decadent piece of carrot cake high in his paw.
“I think I’ve outdone myself!” exclaimed the chef. “But don’t worry, there’s plenty to go around!”
The militia oohed and aahed at the sight of such a delectable treat. Kendall saw this, and so set down the slice so he could better perform an exaggerated bow.
“Thank you, thank you! Of course, I wouldn’t dare take all the credit. The recipe is courtesy of Ms. Bumbleflower, who thankfully is far, far away from any of the danger we encounter on our patrols…”
Laughter shook the weeds as the soldiers took their obvious cue to laugh.
“…and the ingredients are all courtesy of His Majesty, King Glarb!”
Kendall gestured behind him where Glarb sat at the head of the supper table, clearly smoldering. This time the other rabbits burst out into raucous cheering, either oblivious or uncaring of their regent’s foul mood. Before Kendall could speak again, however, the king rose from his seat and pulled the corporal aside.
“I trust this…extortion is done?” Glarb hissed. “You and your men can fight now?”
Kendall bit back a chuckle. “With bellies this full? Not a chance! Best wait until tomorrow.”
Glarb’s eye twitched.
[It’s a shame really; I’m sure Warrenguard finds the Carrot Cake delicious, but it doesn’t act as a token to buff him. Only the rabbit it makes does!]

Kastral the Windcrested, Glarb-Calmity’s Augur, and GenCon 2023 (pt 2)
Time to pick up the story where I'd left off...
It was good to be home where I could resume working in my studio.
The art director approved the drawings and selected their preferred color studies.
(she selected Kastral #3 and Glarb #2).
I jumped onto Kastral first.
I'd drawn both cards digitally while at GenCon using my iPad and Procreate. I printed the drawing of Kastral at about 20% on a 140 lb Cold Press Arches watercolor paper. I taped the paper to my drawing board.
I wanted the tunnel of clouds to feel like a watercolor wash, so I painted the background first, using gouache.
With the bg painted, I proceeded to rework and refine the drawing of Kastral with a Caran D'ache brown colored pencil.
Using Casein, I painted a Raw Umber value underpainting, capturing the values, lights, and darks, on Kastral.
Once I was satisfied with the underpainting, I began to lay in the color, continuing with Casein.
The art director asked for a little more of a golden brown tinge highlighting the light side of the character.
And Kastral was complete!
Stay tuned for Glarb, coming up soon!

I gotta say... the bloomburrow short story... was paced REALLY badly. The first 4 chapters would have been fine if there just would have been one or two more, but the fact that they revealed the antagonist AND defeated him in the same scene? No bueno.
Personally, i think that upon meeting them, king glarb should have pretended to be helpful, and sent the group off to get A Powerful Object under the pretense of helping, allowing helga the illusion finally facing her shameful past (which makes her overlook suspecion), THEN have a heel turn reveal. OR have him capture them so the same sort of final push could happen after a team regroup and escape that gavalized their bonds. Really, i just feel like helga's arc was just not fully paid off. I love that this frog has adhd and is a girlfailure, and irl, yeah, the way to solve personal problems of that nature is often to leave the group of people who have cast you as a failure and go live among friends who accept you, but idk if combining such a weak end with the high drama of a town massacre really feels like it paid off.
Also. Getting a single line of prophesy as a random vision resolving ral's business, not even another cryptic drawing or something that feels like helga's jank neurodivergent way of doing magic... Yikes. Terrible payoff. Tepid approval from this prickly yet powerful outsider when everyone else thinks she's an irritating failure seems like it should have like. Resulted in them maybe having a single solo conversation at some point but instead. All ral's emotional downtime was with mabel. Who is a very static character who provides other people emotional stabalization. And that's fine but also. A little baffling to me to have her be that for helga AND ral while they barely speak to each other even though helga's technically the reason he's there.
Also. Honestly. Why did the puffed up little rabbit mayor get so much more page time than like... the villain? Silly sauce. It feels like the word count in this story was badly misspent. And while i also think WOE and LCI had pacing issues, at least WOE felt intentionally sparse in a fairy tale way and LCI felt incredibly high stakes (to the point of being overstuffed by the final battle between all the factions). It's like bloomburrow wanted so badly to maninate in cozy vibes then had to cram the entire third act into a single segment. I think that some of the cozy should have been offloaded into a side story or something in favor of keeping a consistant adventure pacing for the main arc, but alas.
No hate to the author or any of the characters, really, i did like the vibe and characters and wanted MORE time with them. This is just genuine structure criticism.
#mtg blogging#how come MKM sucked as a set but was the best story in the past year???? why did it have to set the benchmark so high?#also. is this annoying of me to say? i CANNOT tell the tone of the fandom wrt to this stuff#and sometimes people find this kind of post as an affront. or hop on with more negativity than i'm bringing#whereas i do just kind of need to pick at the gears of things i genuinely love#magic the gathering#mtg bloomburrow
