Hi I'm so here for some Gladiator matchmaking.

I'm a short, quiet person, you could probably lose me in the laundry like a sock. I like late nights, watching the sunrise before I go to sleep, and listening to other people talk. In the context of a party, this'll mean I'll mostly be silent on the side; in context of 1 on 1, I love the kind of conversations that go deep and last for hours.

I'm a storyteller, a writer, a reader; I have a good singing voice, and get along both with animals and people who need care. This makes kids like me - meanwhile, I'm much too timid and shy for kids, so I just end up being trailed by children with the kind of an expression that tells you I need to be rescued. (Parents keep shoving their children at me regardless.)

I listen to music almost indiscriminately though you won't find many rap songs on my playlists, and my favourite films include Gravity (2013), Spotlight (2015), Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002), and Gladiator II. My favourite genre of everything ever is horror, preferably psychological but I'm here for a good slasher, too.

This one took me a while because I had so many characters that could have worked, but I’m matching you with Geta!

As Emperor, Geta expects people to listen to him, to hang on to his every word. But he also tires of sycophants who constantly agree with him, those too wrapped up in their own agendas to pay attention, who nod and smile and simper. To have someone to listen to him, beyond the mere surface, is not something he experiences often. If he were to be honest with himself, he finds it frightening. There’s a vulnerability in being heard, and in trusting the person who is listening.

If you were to gain his trust in this way, you’ll be his most valued confidant. He often has trouble sleeping, and will seek you out to talk into the small hours.

He’ll want to hear you too. You’ll tell him stories, of faraway lands and of creatures beneath the depths and of the constellations far from his reach. Of things so fantastic and beyond his imagination that he won’t have to think of his duties and the Senate and politics.

If Caracalla warms to you, Geta will be grateful for the occasional respite from his brother’s demands that your caring nature would provide. But you are his storyteller, he’ll remind you in a thinly disguised petulant tone, do not forget that.

Having the attention of a man like Geta is dangerous, but as long as you remain loyal to him, you will fear nothing and no one ever again.

Is MMA in Trouble? The Sport Is Losing Its Soul

MMA used to be the most exciting, unpredictable, and raw sport on the planet. It was a perfect blend of skill, brutality, and personality—a modern gladiator arena where the toughest and most charismatic fighters became legends.

Now? It feels manufactured, watered down, and lifeless. The UFC is losing steam, Bellator is dead, and the sport as a whole is suffering from a major charisma deficit.

The reality is simple: MMA is in trouble.

Bellator Is Dead, and That’s a Bad Sign

Bellator was never the UFC, but it was an essential part of the MMA ecosystem. It gave fighters an alternative, created real competition, and produced stars like Michael Chandler, Eddie Alvarez, and Patricio “Pitbull” Freire.

Now? It’s gone. Bellator was absorbed into PFL, a promotion with zero personality and even less momentum.

• Fighters who once had a legitimate second option are now either in the UFC or stuck in a glorified tournament league.

• The UFC no longer has to worry about losing talent to a real competitor, meaning fighter pay will stay low and matchmaking will get even more predictable.

• Without Bellator, the only real alternatives for high-level fighters are boxing paydays (if they’re lucky) or YouTube influencer fights (if they’re desperate).

Bellator’s collapse isn’t just about one promotion failing—it’s a sign that MMA isn’t growing. In fact, it might be shrinking.

The UFC’s Hype Machine Is Fading

There was a time when every UFC event felt like an event. The buildup was real, the fighters had star power, and the trash talk actually mattered.

Now? The UFC is starting to feel like an endless cycle of forgettable Fight Night cards and overhyped pay-per-views.

• Watered-down fight cards: The UFC runs so many events that most cards feel like low-level filler. There are no stakes, no real buildup—just another Saturday night.

• Lack of must-see matchups: When was the last time a fight had that big-fight feel? Fighters are getting injured, contracts are holding up divisions, and Dana White seems more interested in promoting Power Slap than fixing his matchmaking issues.

• The same recycled names: The UFC keeps relying on old stars like Conor McGregor and Jon Jones, but McGregor barely fights anymore, and Jones is a part-time champion. Who’s next?

The UFC is the biggest MMA promotion in the world, but it no longer feels like a global phenomenon. It’s a business that runs on autopilot, more concerned with maximizing revenue than creating legendary moments.

Where Are the Personalities?

MMA was built on larger-than-life characters. Whether it was Conor McGregor’s trash talk, Chael Sonnen’s pro wrestling-style promos, or the raw intimidation of a prime Wanderlei Silva, fans tuned in because these fighters had charisma, presence, and a unique identity.

Now? The sport is full of talented fighters, but almost no real superstars.

• Fighters today are media-trained, careful, and robotic. No one wants to say anything controversial, and when they do, it feels forced.

• The UFC’s culture has shifted from promoting wild, outspoken personalities to pushing quiet, company-friendly champions.

• Social media and influencer culture have replaced the old-school press conference wars. Now, the biggest MMA beefs happen on Twitter instead of in the Octagon.

Fans don’t just watch fights for skill—they watch for storylines, rivalries, and drama. And right now, MMA has none of that.

MMA Needs Chaos, Not Corporate Structure

The biggest problem with MMA today? It’s too corporate, too safe, and too predictable.

• The UFC has a monopoly on the sport, which means fighters have no real leverage.

• There’s no real competition outside of the UFC. PFL is too niche, ONE Championship is too far away, and boxing is a mess of its own.

• The days of wild, unpredictable fighters who bring chaos to the sport are fading.

If MMA wants to survive, it needs to bring back the raw energy, the real rivalries, and the unpredictable chaos that made it great in the first place.

Otherwise, it risks becoming just another sanitized, soulless, and dying sport.

October 26th is Dimìtrovden/Mitrovden (Димитровден), or the Orthodox feast day of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki. (Bulgarian: Свети Димитър Солунски) He is a 3rd-4th century Christian saint and great martyr (великомъченик) from the city of Thessaloniki in Greece, of which he is the patron saint.

Hagiographies refer to St. Demetrius as a young man of a senatorial family, who became proconsul and was tasked with persecuting Christians in the at the time still pagan Roman Empire. However, being himself Christian, he instead protected them, for which the emperor had him jailed. He was later speared to death as punishment for the defeat of the gladiator Lyaeus at the hands of Demetrius' disciple, Nestor. This marked the beginning of his veneration by Christians in the area, which grew in the following centuries, as he was said to guard the city against raiders.

Albeit not one originally, during the Middle Ages St. Demetrius came to be revered as a warrior saint, and iconography portrays him riding on a red horse, running a spear through various enemies — often Lyaeus, but also whoever was locally perceived as an enemy. In Greek icons, this is sometimes the Bulgarian tsar Kaloyan, while in Bulgarian ones — the Byzantine emperor Basil II The Bulgarslayer, or later on, a Turk. St. Demetrius is also associated with the founding of the Second Bulgarian Tsardom, specifically the uprising of the brothers Petăr and Asen, which broke out on Oct. 26th, 1185. The St. Demetrius church in Veliko Tărnovo (pictured above) was built in commemoration the event, and served as a coronation site of Asen dynasty tsars, who claimed him as their patron.

Traditionally, Dimitrovden marks the end of the seasonal transition from fall to winter, a period which begins on Oct. 14th with Petkovden. Bulgarian folk mythology casts the saints George and Demetrius in the role of twin brothers, whose respective holidays split the year into its warm and cold halves. The latter, elder of the two, ushers in the cold and darkness, as he rides in on his red horse and the winter's first snowflakes sprinkle down onto the earth from his beard. As St. George's opposite and counterpart, he takes on the qualities of a chthonic deity, and thus has connotations to death and the Beyond — under his patronage the so-called Dimitrovska Zadushnica takes place on the Saturday prior to Dimitrovden, one of several such holidays where food is given out in honor of deceased ancestors. Perhaps this is also why, in addition to St. George, folk imagination places him as a brother to Archangel Michael and nephew to St. Paraskeva/Petka.

Dimitrovden is the true end to the year's agrarian cycle — the harvest now over, it's time to put the farm tools away, make sure the animals have shelter and firewood is stocked up. It's also when farmhands and other labourers' contracts expire and they get rehired for the year ahead, which is why the day is also known as Razpust (Разпуст). As with other big holidays, a community-wide celebratory feast is held, and the customary ritual meal (or kurban) is mutton. The biggest ram is chosen, a pair of gold-painted apples are placed onto its horns and those present bow before it, after which it's slaughtered and cooked, and receives a priest's blessing before being served. Festivities are accompanied by music and horo (group dancing), which again has an intended matchmaking function. Namesakes of the saint celebrate the occasion, too — but they're traditionally served a chicken or rooster dish, according to gender. Other foods for Dimitrovden include corn, seasonal fruit and derived dishes, such as apple pita, pestil (a type of plum dessert), rachel (pumpkin syrup), etc.

Another activity which traditionally ends on Dimitrovden is construction work — a new house is supposed to have been completed by then, and the homeowners celebrate by throwing their own feast with a kurban, and inviting friends and relatives to witness the house being blessed by the master mason and the priest. The feast day has therefore been adopted as a career holiday of builders and masons.

The day's connection to the mysterious and otherworldly has inspired various beliefs and rituals of prognostic or divinatory nature, and anything from the weather and moon phases, to the behaviour of farm animals is observed carefully and used to make future predictions. Characteristic is the custom, known as polazvane (полазване), wherein members of the household make note of the first person to visit them, to physically cross the threshold into their home, and interpret them as a portent of things to come. Also, according to old treasure hunting legends, Dimitrovden is when "the sky opens" and buried gold emits a blue-ish flame just above ground.

Dimitrovden is part of the group of holidays, based around the idea of transition and liminality; between fall and winter, between the world of the living and of the dead. The Christian and pre-Christian symbolism intertwine, the martyr death of the saint mirrors the "death" of nature as the earth is covered in snow and daytime engulfed by darkness. And crucially — for a people whose perception of time follows nature's cycles — the coming of winter brings not only a period of calm and rest, but the promise of spring and renewal.

Fic-to-Art #25: A decade-long journey with Sokka and Azula

Yep. I can't believe it's been a full decade either, but here we are. Ten years later and it feels like it was yesterday, almost.

On this month on Patreon, I figured I'd just make a larger sort of tribute to my long journey as a fic writer. I've had ups and downs, big moments and small, but ultimately, that I've had the chance to be here for as many years as I have is certainly a privilege, and one I don't take for granted.

I've met lots of great people because of my participation in this fandom, particularly in the Sokkla community. I've honestly made some of the best friends I've ever known through the past ten years. I've graduated from university, I've grown in many ways as a person, artist and writer, something that kid right out of high school would have never imagined possible when she first set out on this journey with zero clue of how far it would take her, and how important this would be for her in the years to follow.

After all this time, it feels like the red string of fate from The Reason has woven itself through all my stories afterwards, resulting in a very curious relationship between all these stories and the one that started it all. I mean, technically it was OoPB that started everything X'D but The Reason is by far the flagship of that particular setting. I haven't even revisited those stories in forever, but I really am glad that I did it for this particular purpose.
