Pokemon Card of the Day #2702: Glaceon-GX (Ultra Prism)
There are always cards that people get excited for before each set is released. Cards that lock the opponent down tend to be common choices here, as a lot of decks struggle heavily under certain restrictions. Glaceon-GX shut off Abilities from quite a few Pokemon, and that was enough to get people to try it out. Yes, the lock was somewhat limited it its positioning, and not every Pokemon was affected by it. The power here wasn’t great outside of the GX attack, either. And yet, it was an Ability lock, and some decks struggled a ton to keep up under that sort of thing.
200 HP was pretty standard for a Stage 1 Pokemon-GX. This was enough to generally take a strong hit at full HP. There were exceptions, such as against the strongest Tag Teams (think Reshiram & Charizard-GX) or boosted attacks could still push through, as could some of the Pokemon V if using this once Sword & Shield came out. The Metal Weakness wasn’t the worst thing. Zacian V was already getting past 200 damage and the other Metal-types around were either rare or were based on full stall and not attacking. The Retreat Cost of 2 was quite average. It was nice to have Switch or something similar, as Glaceon-GX was only useful when Active but could run into situations where its lock wasn’t needed every once in a while.
Freezing Gaze was the type of Ability that could really change a game in the right match-up. Glaceon-GX had to be the Active Pokemon to use it, and it shut off all Abilities from Pokemon-GX and Pokemon-EX on the opponent’s side of the field, including in their hand and discard pile. This did not help against the later Pokemon V, so Glaceon-GX was limited there. This did lock up important Abilities from the likes of Zoroark-GX, Marshadow-GX, Tapu Lele-GX, Dedenne-GX, Lycanroc-GX, Rayquaza-GX, Zeraora-GX, and the very notable Mewtwo & Mew-GX. Some of these were just minor annoyances (Zoroark-GX was hurt by losing an Ability but could still hit hard) while some got completely shut down (Mewtwo & Mew-GX and Marshadow-GX). Some just lost their chance to support other things. This was the kind of thing that could sometimes win games, even against very good decks. It could also be not very useful, as things like Garbodor and Malamar just didn’t care, and the Fighting-types, Reshiram & Charizard-GX, and Pikachu & Zekrom-GX could get by just fine. This made it a weird match-up play, and other attackers, such as Zoroark-GX, were required to pick up the slack here.
Frost Bullet really wasn’t that strong. A Water and 2 Colorless Energy would usually get you more than 90 damage, though 30 damage to 1 of the opponent’s Benched Pokemon did help and could even set up for a later Polar Spear GX. That being said, the lower damage was to make up for the lock Glaceon-GX was trying to put on, and in that context it was okay.
The GX attack, Polar Spear GX, had its moments. It did need a Water and 2 Colorless Energy like the normal attack, and it did 50 damage for each damage counter on the opponent’s Active Pokemon. Frost Bullet could easily help set up for that, so getting a big hit in on a Pokemon-GX was a huge deal.
Glaceon-GX was a reasonably good Pokemon due to being able to ruin things for some very strong Pokemon. Getting rid of the most versatile attacker in Malamar decks, the support of a Dedenne-GX or Tapu Lele-GX, or all the extra attacks from Mewtwo & Mew-GX could set an opponent back by several turns. The reason it wasn’t top tier was that there were other decks that just overwhelmed it, as it wasn’t that strong. Pairing it with Zoroark-GX did indeed help, and there was a point, especially in the SUM-On format in 2019, where it was a mid-tier competitive option. Not the most popular thing simply due to the match-up issues, but enough to make the need to fall back on an already good Zoroark-GX less of a problem.

Pokemon Card of the Day Schedule: Ultra Prism
Ultra Prism was the first set to survive a rotation, being available not only in 2018 and 2019 but into 2020 as well. The extra year ended up not having a World Championship due to the pandemic, but there were still tournaments before everything shut down and online results to look at. The new mechanic here was Prism Star cards, which were limited to 1 of a specific copy instead of 4 per deck and said cards went to the Lost Zone instead of the discard pile. They tended to have quite good effects to make up for it, especially once more sets with the concept were released.
The card list here had some notable ones, though it wasn’t one to break the game open as much as, say, the Team Up set eventually did. Dawn Wings Necrozma-GX and Lunala Prism Star gave some more help to Psychic decks. Oranguru could recycle resources for stall decks, which really helped them keep the opponent locked down. As for Trainers, Cynthia brought a good form of hand refreshment, which got it into a lot of decks. Lillie was another draw option, though only useful in the right spot. Escape Board helped with retreating once Float Stone was gone and paired amazingly with the later Jirachi, while Volkner didn’t come into its own until Lightning became a top type with the release of Pikachu & Zekrom-GX as well as Zapdos in later sets. Generally, Ultra Prism wasn’t the most impressive set compared to the impact a lot made, but had several cards that got into good decks nonetheless. Bringing a new type of card into the game would also pay off over time.
