Welcome to the Geraskier Midsummer Mini Bang!  

What is a mini bang?  It’s a fandom challenge involving a team up of authors and artists!  Unlike a big bang, the minimum word count is much lower.  In this case, 5,000 words.  

What is midsummer?  In the Witcher fandom, midsummer or Midaëte is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, celebrated as part of the elven year. It marks the beginning of the sixth savaed in the elven calendar, Feainn.  Summer Shrines are erected on this day "to give praise to the sun and life, while acknowledging death's certainty". They are supposed to draw power from the sun's heat and protect all living things. They are used by witches to bless crops and summon fires, as well as by witchers to increase the intensity of their Signs (from https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Midsummer).  In our world, midsummer falls on June 20th, 2020, which is when posting will begin.  

What is Geraskier?  The pairing of Geralt of Rivia and Jaskier the bard from The Witcher fandom.

Seeking Artists

We have had an overwhelming response to our author sign ups, and while we are happy to have our wonderful authors, we have had much fewer artists sign up.  We are debating closing author sign ups early, but we wanted to put a call out for additional artists before we decide to do that.  Artist sign ups will be open until May 2nd, but we would implore any artist who will sign up to please sign up early so we can stop panicking!  If we don’t get enough interest from artists in the next couple of days, we will have to close author sign ups early so we can focus on getting enough artists for those who have already signed up.  Please toss us a reblog, and tag your favorite Geraskier fan artists who might be interested in signing up!

Posting Guidelines

Greetings, Witchlings!  As we approach the start of the posting dates, we wanted to give a run down of how we would like posting to go. Please take your time to read this carefully.

The posting period is from June 20th to July 11th.  

Authors and artists will decide on a posting date that will work for both parties. We are not assigning you a date.

Both pieces must be posted on the same day.

 If the fic is multi-chaptered, authors can post the chapters on multiple days within the posting period, if they wish to. The art piece should be posted together with the relevant chapter that it’s illustrating. If the piece isn’t specific to a single moment in the fic, author and artist can decide when they think it’s best to post it.

We prefer art to be embedded into fics when posting on, but that is not a requirement.

If you can’t embed the art, make sure art and fic are both linked to each other.

reminders & timeline

Hello, witchlings! We hope you’re all doing great. We’re getting closer to the claims phase, aka when things start to get really interesting and everyone is screaming with anticipation! Here are some reminders for you bang participants:

AUTHORS  -- if you haven’t submitted your summary form yet, here’s your reminder to do so before the end of May 2nd, which is this Saturday! If you intend to drop out, please let us know before the deadline by filling in the first part of the form.

ARTISTS -- once we have all the summaries and it’s all set, we’ll send you the claims form and all the necessary info via e-mail by May 3rd. Remember that the claims won’t be carried out on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, so take your time reading through the fic summaries and tags carefully! Fics will be assigned via a raffle by order of preference, so what we’re going to ask you is to rank the fic summaries according to your personal preference.

BETA READERS -- after May 2nd, we’re also going to make the list of available beta readers public so that the authors can read through your info and contact you via Tumblr/Discord to discuss the possibility of beta’ing their fics! We’d recommend joining the server, if you can, as many of our authors are in there and it will make it much easier for beta readers and writers to find the perfect match ;)

Schedule

April 1st - author, artist, and beta sign ups open

April 15th - last day for authors to sign up

May 2nd - author check in - 25% of your fic must be written and summaries submitted, with rating and trigger warnings; last day for artists and betas to sign up - last day for authors to drop out without penalty

May 9th - all artist claims must be submitted, beta list drops

June 6th - author/artist check in - all works must be 75% complete - last day for artists to drop out without penalty June 20th - July 4th - posting of complete works to tumblr - artists and authors must post works on the same day, if posting to AO3 please post to the Geraskier Midsummer Mini Bang collection In total, authors will have a maximum of 3 months and 9 days and a minimum of 2 months and 21 days; artists and betas will have 1 month and 26 days.

Artist Claims

Greetings, Witchlings!  We are excited that it is now time for artist claims!  Artists, you should have received an email with a link to fic summaries!  The form explains how claims will work, and has a link to the surveymonkey claim form.  When you have read over the summaries, click the link and put the fics in your preferred order.  Remember, claims are NOT on a first come first served basis, so take your time reading over the summaries.  You have until May 9th at midnight PDT (UTC-7) to submit your claims.  If we wind up having a second round of claims, we will let you know!  After claims are closed, we will get you in contact with your author.  You will coordinate with your author to create your art based on their fic.  If you have any questions, please send us an ask, email us at geraskierminibang@gmail.com, or message us on discord!

Requirements

Greetings to all! Welcome to the Geraskier Midsummer Mini Bang requirements post.

First off, let us start by saying that this bang will be open to all regardless of your skill, age or experience. Now onto specifics:

You can sign up for this mini bang to participate as an author, an artist, or both! You can also do any number of fics or art pieces you want.

Co-authoring is allowed. 

The minimum word count for authors is 5,000 words. There is no maximum.

As this is a themed mini bang, your story should loosely relate to life, love, death, the sun, blessing the crops, fires, witchers using the midsummer to increase the strength of their signs, etc. Just try and be inspired by the theme! You can read more about midsummer here.

All verses all welcomed! (Netflix/show/game/books). 

This is a Geraskier bang, so Geralt/Jaskier must be the main pairing, but OT3 and other ships are allowed. 

You are allowed to write AU (modern, a/b/o, etc.) or whatever strikes your fancy! Crossovers are allowed as long as Geraskier is the main pairing. 

Works already in progress are accepted as long as they have not been previously posted. 

You can write (and draw) in whatever rating you desire, however, minors are barred from either writing, betaing and/or drawing anything with explicit content. 

All works must be beta read. If you have an outside beta let us know, if not, a list of betas will be released after claims! 

Your fic summary (to be delivered by May 2nd as per the schedule) should include a brief description of the plot, trigger warnings and whether the rating will be explicit or not. 

If you drop out from the bang after the deadline, you won’t be allowed to participate in the next bang.

NOTE: if you are unsure as to whether you want to sign up as an artist as well as an author and wish to join the Discord server, wait until you’re sure you won’t be just an author to ask us to give you the author role. 

People who will be both authors and artists won’t have access to the specific channels on the server where plots will be discussed until claims are over, to preserve anonymity. We ask that you respect this and help us run this mini bang accordingly so it’s more fun for everybody! 

We won’t be able to enforce this with an iron fist, so we’ll be relying on your maturity and self-awareness.

FAQ

▶ What is a mini bang? 

Similarly to a big bang, it’s a fandom challenge meant to create new fics and art! Authors will write fics and artists will create art based on the fics.

What makes it mini is the lower word requirement (5000 words). We thought this might encourage new writers to engage with the fandom and give people the time to take part in the other ongoing big bangs, if they wish to.

▶ Can I sign up as both artist and author?

You can! And we will love you for it. We simply ask that you keep in mind the schedule of this challenge and only do so if you feel you have the time to complete more than one work within the right time frame.

▶ Can I sign up to submit more than one fic / art piece?

Again, yes! The same advice from above applies here as well.

▶ What about beta readers? 

All works must be beta read. Everyone can sign up to be a beta through the dedicated form. We encourage you to give it a chance, it’s an awesome way to make friends and brainstorm on your favourite characters!

If you’re an author and you already have your own beta, then you’re all set! If not, after the claims a spreadsheet with the betas’ info will be released, so that authors can browse for available beta readers.

▶ How will artist claims work? 

To make things as fair as possible, claims will not be carried out with a 'first come, first serve' system. A raffle by preference will be implemented so that time of vote won't dictate the order of choice. When the summaries are released, every artist should make a list in their own order of preference (of all the summaries). The summaries will have a number assigned for facilitation of ordering. 

▶ What type of art is allowed?

Any type of visual art is allowed, whether digital or physical.

▶ What is Discord? Is it mandatory to join the server?

Discord is a free chat app that allows you to communicate with people through private servers. It comes with a desktop version as well and it’s easy to use. All you need to sign up is an e-mail address!

It’s not mandatory to join the server. However, we’d recommend it, because it makes it easier to engage with the other creators and keep up with news and claims. Plus, we guarantee you’ll have fun chatting about Geraskier and your works with everyone!

▶ What if I need to drop out of the challenge?

The deadlines for dropping out without penalty are May 2nd for authors and June 6th for artists. If you withdraw after that date, you won’t be allowed to participate in the next bang.

You can choose your own posting date(s)! All we ask is that it’s within the timeframe and you let us know when the fic & the art are up, so that we’re extra sure we won’t miss anything, even with the hashtags.

When June 20th is closer we’ll release a post with a recap on the guidelines + information for posting!
