obx s3 thoughts (obviously contains spoilers!)
this is just my opinion, please don’t come for me if u disagree :)
i was a bit disappointed with this season ngl, definitely my least favorite season of the series so far
action sequences were really good but i felt like a few episodes were just straight meaningless action scenes and that definitely felt unnecessary to me
cleo pope jj owners of the season <3
drew starkey can certainly pull off a buzzcut but man do i miss his sexy haircut from season 2 😭😭
WAY TOO MANY BIG JOHN SCENES oh my god look i get it, it’s a miracle the guy turned up alive and shit but i am not john b i do not give two shits about this rather mean looking man and i felt like he was on my screen more than the main cast
shoutout to his actor tho. he did a great job portraying him
i thought i would be a jiara shipper but i don’t like them together at all… i lowkey hate that the writers now literally paired kie with every guy of the pogues when that seems so out of character for her
saw a post about kie being lesbian and you know what? y e s. even though i think a love interest wouldn’t be necessary for her to begin with
i’m a jjpope girlie sorry their chemistry is just chef’s kiss but it’s never gonna happen bc according to the writers there’s not a single gay on that silly lil island
(it’s completely fine if you do ship them bc they did have chemistry in the previous seasons)
not the sarah x topper drama getting reused from last season… i love sarah but girl what the hell
speaking of topper i thought it was fun how they included him in the train heist
but the way sarah manipulated him and used him… i’m no fan of his at all but i did feel for him bc he pulled so much for her and she went straight back to john b 😭
my boy really said i’m gonna light this place up like a damn bonfire lmfao
anyway back to it
the main villains (ward and rafe) of the past two seasons became pretty much irrelevant this season?? huh???
rafe did a near complete 180 out of nowhere… which was strange
like this man’s whole trauma was solely fixed on getting love and respect from his father and the whole donating the cross situation really sucked if you look at it from rafe’s perspective but i do not believe that THAT was all it took to suddenly become so hostile towards ward. even if he still ended up saving him.
this guy was so stuck in the cycle of violence from the pilot up to the final episode of season 2 and his character development was so interesting to see (that scene in s2 when he says he’s not okay and needs help and ward tells him to man up still stuck with me) and it feels like they threw it out of the window and pretty much sidelined his character for no reason at all.
new boring villain is introduced and gets killed in the same season
worst parent award goes to mike and anna
I WANT TO SEE MORE OF JJ AND SARAH WORKING TOGETHER OR JUST INTERACTING PLEASE
they’re such a fun dynamic like give me that please i’ve been asking for this before s2 even came out
the pogues had pretty much 2 scenes together and that’s it… i had hoped to see more of them and their dynamics and just more of them on that deserted island??? wasted potential oh my god
is it just me or was the filming style a lil different this season…
wasn’t rafe’s love interest supposed to be a bigger thing? because the few scenes he shared with her were completely irrelevant and so was her entire character tbh 😭
rafe and kie teaming up… was awesome i loved it
jj and kie running into pope and cleo when they were just about to get off the bus and immediately had to run from people with big ass guns is peak obx energy and i thought it was hilarious
i audibly gasped at the time jump!! such a weird way to end the season, it almost seemed like a series finale but knowing that season 4 is already confirmed i’m genuinely wondering what direction they’re gonna take this. the root of it all was that they were looking for the treasures because some of them were connected to it in their own ways (john b and the royal merchant bc of his dad, pope and the cross/denmark tanny bc family) and rafe and ward were perfect villains up until this season.
if there’s something i want to see in the next season, it’s just more pogue scenes, strengthening their own characters and developments and their dynamics with the other pogues. we really do not need the same romance drama every season. it’s boring and frankly annoying. honestly in this show there’s so much going on that i don’t feel like each one of the pogues needs to end up with someone. i would love to have jarah and jjpope as endgame and have kie and cleo end up solo or maybe have other love interests (but not really).
just give me the pogues doing what they do best — bickering while they’re off chasing some mystery and putting their lives at risk and miraculously getting out of it alive and well.
because season 3 was just weird. really weird. idk this is all for now but i might add more later!

The part that I’m struggling with is somewhat circular logic because if Buddie doesn’t go canon then who do Buck and Eddie end up with romantically (if anyone) because at this stage with a show that has 2-3 seasons left (or actors that might only sign for 1-2 more seasons) how exactly do you create satisfying endgame arcs for both of them amongst an ensemble show especially with the both character’s histories. And if the answer is “we can’t do that” then shouldn’t it be Buddie canon….thus the circular logic 😭😭😭. Like if they could somehow introduce well acted and dynamic LIs for them then sure could make peace with platonic “family” Buddie. I just can’t handle another “meet cute” type LI that is “cookie cutter” with forced chemistry. Would prefer to have Buck and Eddie be alone in that sense than end up in a bland relationship with no substance. TBH if I was OS and RG would peace out at that point once my contract was up IF financial stability existed elsewhere. We all know how OS felt about BT and RG was vocal in earlier seasons about Eddie not being ready to date. So wonder what his thoughts are if this “dating storyline” is going to be a thing or not.
I understand the confusion over who Buck and Eddie would end up with if *not* each other, and because I've always left the door open for Buddie not going canon 'til the very end, I have also considered the possibility that Buck and Eddie don't end up with *anyone* in the end (if they're both still on the show at that time) and that would be the show's way of saying "We would've done it if not for the backlash." The GA would still view them as platonic dudebro besties, but having them in a family moment with Chris or whatever would be for the fandom to *know*. As much as I love(d) to talk about the "If not Buddie then why" aspect of their story (together and as individuals), there has consistently been that nagging feeling that I am (and we as a fandom are) giving the show too much credit. Just off the top of my head, I can think of four instances where a show went in a "romantic" direction that had longtime viewers cursing themselves for wasting so much time hoping for a happy ending: - That '70s Show (showing my age because I watched that finale in real time): Jackie (Mila Kunis) ended up with Fez (Wilmer Valderrama), who always had a crush on her, but she showed no interest in. The audience assumed she would get back with one of her exes. (And now that the show is being rebooted, the character is in fact with one of those exes again. LOL.) - Grey's Anatomy did it twice :) First with Japril getting divorced and April going back to the guy she left for Jackson right before Sarah Drew had to leave the show; then there was Alex running off to be with Izzie and their kids (kids nobody knew they had until then, lmao), leaving his then-wife a note in which he said he already signed divorce papers! - Listen. I never got into this show, but people sure were pissed at that HIMYM finale. Not the endgame couple anyone wanted. (Notice those are all het ships that got screwed over?)
It would not AT ALL be surprising for Buck and/or Eddie to end up in relationships last minute or without much development over a full season (again). It all depends on who's *really* in charge (Is Kristen still there? Is Tim still only offering his input from a distance?) and what message they want to send. And for what it's worth, the more showrunners take criticisms to heart (because "It's MY show and I do what I WANT!!") the more likely they are to do something that awards them the last laugh.

Nicola Walker talks close bond with Sarah Lancashire in heartwarming interview
Nicola Walker and Sarah Lancashire both appeared in Last Tango in Halifax
06 SEPT 2023
Francesca Shillcock SENIOR FEATURES WRITER
Nicola Walker and Sarah Lancashire are both powerhouses when it comes to phenomenal British acting talent. The Split actress starred alongside Happy Valley's leading lady in other beloved BBC drama, Last Tango in Halifax, and it's clear the pair have a very close bond.
Nicola, who is also known and adored for her roles in shows such Unforgotten and Annika and more, shared her admiration for Sarah in a heartwarming new interview shared during the National Television Awards.
The Spooks star appeared on screen in a pre-recorded VT celebrating Sarah's glittering career as she was presented the Special Recognition Award during the ceremony which took place on Tuesday evening. Nicola had plenty to say when it came to singing Sarah's praises. "She has broken my heart and made me laugh in equal measure on camera, on stage, in song, she can do it all," she began.
In another clip, Nicola added: "As an audience, we knew her and that's one of Sarah's gifts that she creates a character that you feel so connected to, and that's because she understands human nature."

She continued: "You can be laughing one moment with her as a viewer, and then she rips your heart out of your chest. She doesn't care about what you think of Sarah Lancashire. The ego is not there. For her, it is all about telling the story."
Nicola also had high praise for Happy Valley: "I think with Happy Valley, between them, Sally and Sarah drew a line and said, 'This is how good British television can be'. What I thought was beautiful was that they let us keep her [Catherine Cawood] and in my imagination, she's still out there somewhere."

After being asked if she'd work with Sarah again, Nicola said enthusiastically: "I would like to work only with Sarah Lancashire, every day, all the time, I don't know if anyone can arrange that! We are very lucky to have her."
Meanwhile, other recognisable faces from the acting world appeared on screen to marvel at Sarah's achievements. Fellow Happy Valley star James Norton said: "She somehow manages to bring truth and authenticity to every role she plays."

James, who was nominated for his role as criminal Tommy Lee Royce in the BBC gritty drama, added; "What's unique about her is her dexterity. It shows incredible skill to shift on a dime, and Sarah does that beautifully."
Sarah was clearly thrilled with her three wins during the NTAs. First, she went up on stage alongside her fellow Happy Valley cast and creators after the show won Best Drama. Soon after she picked up the award for Drama Performance for her role as Catherine Cawood, and later picked up her special recognition award.
Sarah told the audience: "Thank you so much for this. I have adored every scene, and every moment of Happy Valley. And I know I will never forget it, nor the brilliant people that I've worked with, the way the BBC have supported us."
Sarah Lancashire as Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley
"I have to say some things about Sally Wainwright because she is Happy Valley, she is what makes it, her writing is so extraordinary, her characters are extraordinary and anyone who is in receipt of those words is the luckiest actor in the world, in truth."
Sarah continued and made sure to give a shoutout to her co-stars on the programme. "To James Norton, to Siobhan Finneran who has been my partner in crime for three years and she is an extraordinary actress." She finished by saying: "My family walk every step of the way with me, and I am so incredibly lucky to have them in my life."

Parks & Recreation Marries Gay Penguins
“Pawnee Zoo” (September 17, 2009)
Okay, fine, we did the Parks & Rec episode you asked for, but here’s the thing: The one were Leslie Knope marries gay penguins is not the pro-gay piece of TV history you think it is. Nowhere in this episode does Leslie ever say she gives a dirty squirt about gays or same-sex marriage. The episode never takes a position, and the fact that it won a GLAAD Media Award makes it all the more galling that “Pawnee Zoo” plays out as Leslie liking positive attention but never saying a single nice thing about gay people.

Here is my recap of Pass the Pepto (Ballad) episode of the podcast.
This episode originally aired November 18, 2009.
The #1 song in the country was What You Say by Jason Derulo.
The #1 movie in the country was 2012.
PJ Bloom the music supervisor won the outstanding musical supervision award.
The cast went to the Diversity Awards.
They said it was an interesting experience. It was one of the casts first events all together. Jenna said it was a little bit underproduced. Kevin said it was nice to be able to get together and to meet new people.
Kevin shouted out the History of Glee twitter.
Someone on twitter makes four picture synopsis of episodes. She would like to be on the pr payroll.
Jenna said this is the beginning of her and Kevin being expensive extras. Although to be fair the previous episode was big for them and this one had a lot to do with baby gate.
They do a brief summary of the episode.
This episode contains a lot of uncomfortableness. It makes Kevin queasy and it hurts him to watch it. Jenna said it's a really awkward episode.
Naya's laugh in the middle of the spider in the ear story about Matt is 100% real.
Sarah Drew (Suzy Pepper) was an amazing guest star and very funny. Jenna said she was one of the most excellent guest stars they had and Kevin said she absolutely crushed it. She would later go on to be on Grey's Anatomy.
Brittany thing a ballad is a male duck is one of the best lines.
Glee was best when it used the music as part of the storyline and ot move the storyline further.
I bet the duck's in the hat is the second part of the best line by Brittany.
Tina picks other Asian is slightly inappropriate.
Diana gave a great look when Artie picked Quinn.
All of the songs make Kevin uncomfortable. He had to fast forward through some of the numbers.
Jenna really enjoyed Endless Love because of the uncomfortableness of it.
Rachel's crush on Mr. Shue is really weird.
The crushes are happening this episode.
The Suzy Pepper flashback is so good.
Terri's line when she picks up the phone was great.
She has two scenes in this episode and they are both incredible.
The Don't Stand So Close and Young Girl mash up is incredible but also super uncomfortable. This one really made Jenna uncomfortable. Kevin had to fast forward through this number.
Rachel handing Mr. Shue the beer when he gets home is extra creepy. Kevin said it's like a horror movie. It's 100% inappropriate.
The scene in the car of Mr. Shue taking Rachel home is beautifully shot.
It was fun to get to see everyone sing different genres of songs. Kevin enjoyed Rachel singing Crush.
The crazy meeting crazy of Rachel and Suzy in the bathroom is really funny.
Jenna said haven't we all had a crush on a teacher. Kevin said not all of us.
Rachel saying sorry for being crazy is so funny.
This is Rachel's 3rd crush and we are only in episode 10. This is high school so it is not really that weird.
We meet Quinn's mom and dad. Greg Henry and Charlotte Ross who play her parents are incredible.
Greg Henry is in Scandal.
Jenna said the Chastity ball dress scene is reminiscent of when she was on Drag Race. Kevin said but you were not 16 and Jenna said she was not as far along.
This is the beginnings of Kurt and Finn. We start to see them start to be a family but also Kurt's crush on Finn.
Kevin can't watch Cory sing I'll Stand By You. Not because it's awkward but it's too emotional. He also lost it in the Quarterback when they did that number. It was Cory's first big solo.
Corry was phenomenal in this episode.
Singing to the sonogram was so weird but it works.
I agree with Kevin that I love the relationship between Finn and Carol.
The moment when Romy cries but doesn't cry when she hugs Finn is heartbreaking. It breaks Jenna every time.
Kevin said it makes sense because Romy's emotions are always right there. She will give you everything. Jenna said she is an open book. You can see why she is a good actor. It's so good when an actor can teeter on emotions.
A fan wrote in and told them about the continuity error of Kurt playing the piano. Kurt and the stand in are wearing different colored pants.
Kurt's voice over is so good. Kurt's voice overs really make this episode.
The scene where Kurt is helping Finn look for an outfit was really sweet.
This scene is a really grounding moment and sets up for the future of Burt and Carol.
Then Kurt makes it awkward by telling Finn to sing to Quinn's parents.
Jenna thinks the dinner at Fabray's was shot at a real house.
Finn in the bathroom is one Kevin and Jenna's favorite thing ever. The karate chop reminds Jenna of a scene in Friends with Ross.
Jenna and Kevin hate the song You're Having My Baby. The cast would be silly and say You're Having My Baby.
Diana kept laughing as Cory sang the song to him and Cory kept forgetting his lines because she saw Diana was having a hard time not laughing.
The I have to go or they will think I'm pooping line in the bathroom was brilliant. This whole sequence is so so good. It's really akward.
We get to see Dianna's acting chops in the scene between Quinn and her dad. It's written so well. It's a great scene. It's also heartbreaking.
The scene with Carol afterwards was quiet and easy.
The scene with Kurt confessing and Finn not getting it is great.
Kevin and Jenna like Puck and Mercedes together.
The acting in the scene of Puck telling Mercedes he is the father is really great.
Kevin was excited to do Lean On Me.
Kevin said his voice sounds weird because he was trying to imitate the guide vocal. It wasn't someone who normally did the guide voice for Kevin's parts. He really loved the guys voice and tried to sound like him.
Kevin couldn't record the song to save his life. He had an emotional breakdown. He got to the bridge and he couldn't do it. He couldn't get it sung the way they wanted it to be sung. They pulled him and said someone else would do it.
Jenna also couldn't do it. They ended up combining Jenna and Kevin's parts.
Unfortunately they cut out Amber's verse for the filmed version.
They kept Cory and Dianna from knowing what they were doing with this number. They weren't allowed in rehearsals and saw it for the first time on the day it was shot. They filmed Dianna and Cory's reactions first.
Brittany did her ear thing in this number. Kevin said it was nice to see all the different interactions in this number. They were loose and just enjoying each other's company.
Jenna high fived Naya and Jenna was not well when she rewatched that part for this recap.
This was the first time they brought out the personal fans. For some reason it was so hot on stage that day.
This episode had romance, crushes, and a whole lot of baby gate.
Tartie Takes:
Cringe Moments aka Ouchies - You're Having My Baby, I'll Stand By You, Crush, and Endless Love. Those two storylines are really really difficult.
Worst Dance Move - Will standing on the piano and jumping during the mash up.
Best Song - Jenna said Kevin's vocals on Lean On Me. Kevin said all of Lean On Me.
Kevin said the times they had to fix him the most are the times he likes his vocals the most. Kevin said his voice always sounds like his voice has autotune or melodyne so when his voice has to be fixed it doesn't actually sound that bad.. He said he probably didn't have time to properly warm up or learn Lean On Me. Jenna said it's hard to not duplicate your guide because they were so good.
Best Prop - the pepper
Didn't Age Well - When Quinn's mom said maybe you haven't been exercising enough
Best Line - Finn in the bathroom. Also I think the duck's in the hat. Runner up Tina's line about her rosacea acting up.
Shit We Found On TikTok:
There is a mistake in the STD episode. In the scene where Artie is telling the boys he has an STD in the background on the tv are real Glee credits but in the scene they reference watching Arliss.
Next week is Hairography and their is so much to talk about. Jenna loves this episode.

Review of 14x10 “Personal Jesus”
So many people were fantastic in this episode, but my review mainly focuses on April’s story as she is the one I connect with the most.
“In a course of one day, Job received four messages with separate news that his livestock, servants, and ten children had all died. He continued to be a faithful servant. He praised God. He persevered. Job’s faith was tested, and he passed the test. And for his faith God rewarded Job with twice what he had before.”
There is an idea in many circles of Christianity that has been perpetuated for years. To really be a Christian, you must prove yourself. You follow all the rules, you stay as far from all forms of sin as possible, and you never question the teachings of the Bible. If you can do those things, and do them well, then maybe you will be a good enough Christian.
April Kepner was taught those same ideas. She grew up believing, knowing, that God is the answer for all of life’s difficulties. All she needed to do was to believe in him and follow his teachings, and life would go according to plan.
Except it didn’t.
It didn’t go according to plan in that hotel room in San Francisco when her feelings for her best friend contradicted everything she had learned about sex and virtue. For the first time in her life, she stopped following the straight path that was laid before her. She took a detour and found, that if she let it, life could be fuller and hold more joy than she ever imagined.
And it was. For a moment.
But the guilt and shame that come from being taught your whole life that good Christians don’t sin quickly caught up with her, and her unshakeable pillar of faith swayed just enough to crack the surface.
Christians fail, though. She knew that. She only needed to ask forgiveness and to reaffirm her faith, and eventually she did. The on-call room escapades stopped, and she grounded herself again, back on the right path. She would work harder at being a better doctor, a better person, a better Christian and eventually, God would reward her.
And the she met Matthew, who was seemingly everything she ever wanted. A kind, handsome man who was strong in his faith and loved her completely. Her world had been set right. Except for that quiet spark, deep in her soul that yearned for more. She heard it in still moments. It would whisper to her that there is more to life than settling for what you are “supposed” to do. She continued to silence that nudging voice, until the day she was supposed to marry Matthew, and the voice became a roar. It was so loud that it was all she could hear as she turned from the altar and ran from the church with Jackson, terrified and overjoyed all at once.
Her faith shook once more, unsure that she had made the right choice, but then peace came.
God had brought her happiness. She married Jackson, they were expecting a baby, and all was right with the world. Until it wasn’t. Until she was given an unimaginable test. Her child was sick, and no medicine in the world could cure him. She held her son and watched him take his last breath. She had no explanation. She prayed for a miracle. Her whole life she had been taught to be faithful and obedient and God would answer her prayers. Yet he didn’t. And this ripped a hole in her faith so large that it could never fully close.
The hole grew as she traveled to Jordan searching for healing, but she lost her marriage instead. Jackson was her rock. He was one of the few people in her life who had ever truly believed in her. Losing him made the hole grow bigger.
Oh, but Harriet. Harriet is her strength. Her reason to keep going. Her light in the darkness.
But she is still hurting. She has to ask herself, how can someone like her, a good Christian, face so much pain? And why would a loving, caring God allow one of his followers to suffer when he could prevent it all?
This season has been building to April being forced to look at her life and the decisions she has made, and this episode is a turning point in that journey.
April walked in to season 14 with a broken spirit when she told Jackson that what they were doing was causing her pain. Her heart was broken over Jackson, and things only got harder from there. All season, she was repeatedly reminded of Samuel, Jordan, leaving Matthew at the altar, losing Jackson, and her insecurities as a doctor.
Like Job, she has been tested. Job lost everything that was dear to him, and yet he still kept his faith. He was patient because he knew that, no matter what, God was with him. April did the same. Through her trials, she kept believing in God and his grace. Until today, when all of her struggles and all of her failures were placed in her path at once.
Paul is brought in as a hit and run victim and April treats him, while Meredith, Jo, and Alex discuss how best to handle the situation. Mer goes into the room to check on Paul’s status, and tells April not to kill him. “You really can’t lose him.” April is constantly being told she is not as good as Meredith, but this is not actually a moment of Meredith distrusting April’s abilities as a doctor. Mer tells her she can’t lose him because she is afraid Jo and Alex will be charged with murder. Unfortunately, April doesn’t know that, and it comes across as Mer doubting her. We see that when April calls after her, “Thanks for the vote of confidence!” Once again, April feels that she is not good enough.
Because she is so trusting, she thought that Webber had asked her to run the contest because she is a good leader. She soon finds out it was simply so he could compete, and now, she is missing out on a great surgical opportunity. This is another small reminder that she is still not valued as a surgeon in her peers’ eyes.
She doesn’t have time to dwell on that, though, because Karen Tayler is very pregnant and will not make it to Labor and Delivery before her baby is born. So, April steps in for Robbins, delivering the baby who turns out to be Matthew’s daughter. It seems that Matthew, the man she left at the altar, has the happy life she dreamed of, and she is forced into a front row seat to witness it. She is happy for him, though. He deserves happiness, and this is reassurance that she made the right decision leaving him. He is happy. Even if she isn’t.
(Side note: Arizona claims she didn’t tell April that she was treated Matthew’s wife because of HIPPA. Arizona sure didn’t care about HIPPA when she told Jackson that April was pregnant.)
Deluca drives the pain in a little deeper by telling April that Matthew’s wife is just like her. At this point she is visibly frustrated, but she spots Jackson and heads over to him, knowing he will understand. They have an adorable exchange about the embarrassment of treating Matthew’s wife as well as the contest. April tries to get Jackson to take back the contest, which he unbeknownst to her, created. He, of course, says no, and we get our first hint that this contest is going to be big for both of them.
Their conversation is cut short as April has another incoming trauma. A twenty-year-old man tried to cut off his own hand because he couldn’t stop masturbating, and according to his interpretation of the Bible, this was the only logical thing to do. This patient is a message directly for April, but also for the audience. The Bible is a book of stories that has wonderful teaching and morality lessons. However, in no way should we interpret what it says literally at all times. It has been translated countless times and was written by human hands. Fallible human hands. It is a guide book and not a how-to manual.
The next trauma is another sign for April that God doesn’t always intervene, even when he can. Eric, a twelve-year-old boy, was shot by a police officer climbing in the window of his own house. Jackson and Bailey are visibly angered by this, as things like this happen too often in our country. He is an innocent child who was shot for no reason other than the officer’s assumption he was a criminal based on the color of his skin. April does not have personal experience with this, but she can see the cruelty and unfairness of the situation. She jumps in to help and the weight of the day’s injustices begin to weigh heavily on her.
Like Jo tells Jenny, “The good outweighed the bad. Until it didn’t.”
Everywhere April looks she sees bad. Paul, Karen and Matthew, Eric, Jackson, her career. But she still has faith, and she tries to explain that to the guy who attempted to cut off his hand. “God doesn’t tempt us beyond our ability. He doesn’t give us more than we can handle.” And one of my favorite lines, “When God created the world, he also created metaphors.”
The only problem with this is that God does give people more than they can handle, and April is feeling that right about now.
Eric’s family arrives and April watches as his parents and Jackson have to fight for him to be treated as a child, a human. How could these cops, who swear to uphold justice, clearly be so wrong?
She exchanges a silent look with Jackson, a look that holds so much tension and unspoken thoughts, but Karen Taylor is in pain, and she is pulled away again before she can decide to speak.
Karen has a blood clot on her vagina, and April finds herself in the embarrassing situation of having to drain the blood clot off of her ex-fiance’s wife’s vagina. Talk about humbling. But that’s okay, because as Karen reminds her, “God doesn’t give us more than we can handle.”
This message is repeated for April because she is feeling overwhelmed with sorrow, but her Christian upbringing has taught her she is suffering this much for a reason. God is teaching her something, and she just has to be patient, like Job.
During Eric’s MRI, April hears about the discrimination Jackson faced from police and she realizes there are things she doesn’t know about Jackson, but again, she doesn’t have a moment to get deeper into what he tells her because she is paged back to Karen Taylor.
Karen is still waiting for a room, and she ends up catching up with Matthew while they wait. She gets to hear all about how Karen is the love of his life. Even after April hurt him so much, he found something better. “She the love of my life, you know? Of course you know. You have that with Jackson.” In that moment, we all heard April’s heart break. Jackson is the love of her life, but she feels that she failed in that, too. Instead of telling this to Matthew, she pretends to be happy. At least something good came from her leaving him. God gave Matthew a great life and she doesn’t want to take away from that. But that happiness is hard to fake when Matthew says, “I heard from the pastor that you were pregnant. So, you have, what a three-year-old now?” Samuel. He would have been three had he lived. “I had – I have – We have Harriett. We have a beautiful daughter named Harriett. She’s one. She is the light of my life.” And the love that April has for her daughter is heard in the emotion that comes through in that line. Harriet is her life at this point.
Matthew is happy for her. “So, it worked out perfectly for both of us, didn’t it? God used that pain and turned it into something beautiful. Guess he knew what he was doing all along.”
He returns to his wife, and April’s face falls as she walks away.
Karma reaches Paul’s room as he injures himself in his angry fit, causing a head injury that leads to him being brain dead. Can’t say I’m sad. Jo is told that she gets to make the call on what to do with Paul. Her reaction from laughter to tears was perfect. And the way she reached out for Alex’s face for support and relief was everything.
Robbins finally shows up to help April with Karen who is in extreme pain just as Eric crashes.
April, Jackson, and Bailey get him to the O.R., and Bailey tells April they can take it from there. April backs away feeling helpless, only to turn back to run into Karen’s O.R. She is shamed as usual by her co-workers, and she is overcome with guilt. Maybe she isn’t a good enough doctor. Maybe she did something wrong. Did she cause this like she caused all the other bad things in her life?
In this time of despair, she turns to the only source of strength she can think of – God. She heads to the chapel to pray for her patients, only to find an angry Matthew. He leaves her, and she sits, beginning to pray for healing and good, but the words of the prayer fail her. She hears no answer. And all she can do is cry.
Cry for Karen, whose body is failing her when her child and husband need her the most.
Cry for Eric’s family, who have to bury their child way too early.
Cry for Jackson, who has to live with bias in his life every day because of his skin color.
Cry for a system that has failed. A system that is supposed to be good. “How am I supposed to have any faith in a system like that?”
Cry for Ben and Bailey who have to explain their son how not to get killed by the police.
And she cries because she has no answer for the patient who questions his own faith.
“Then tell me what to do! If I can’t trust this, if the word of God is just a bunch of stories, what does anything mean? What is any of this even for?”
And that’s the question April cannot answer. That is the questions that brings her faith tumbling to the ground. What is the meaning of a new mother dying and leaving her daughter motherless? What is the meaning of a twelve-year-old boy being murdered outside his house? What is the meaning of her son, Samuel, dying? What is the meaning of her marriage to Jackson ending? What is any of this for?
She has spent her life being good because that is what she is supposed to do as Christian, or so she believed. But why? So she can die with no explanation one day? So she can experience suffering and loss over and over again? So she can watch good people suffer daily? Why is she trying so hard to be good when God allows these terrible things to happen? Why isn’t he doing anything? Because if he is not going to intervene, then there is no reason to try to live this perfect life. There is no point to any of this.
“My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? Job asked the question, too. But he kept the faith. And what did he get for it? Replacement children. PTSD. Was it worth it, to be a faithful servant? Or would it have been better to just curse God’s name from the beginning? Where was God throughout all of Job’s suffering? He was winning a bet with Satan. Makes you wonder where he is through all of the unfairness and inequity and cruelty in the world. Where is he now?”
To April, God has forsaken her. She was a good and faithful servant. She was patient. And it got her nothing. So, she is done being faithful. We saw the pain on her face as she drank herself numb at the bar and as she stood in the shower, desperate to wash off the pain of the day, the light in her eyes burnt out. This is where April’s journey begins.
Her decision to let Vik in the shower had nothing to do with love or lust. It was just one more thing to numb the pain. She sees no reason to continue to always do the right thing because it has gotten her nothing. She is alone and broken, and those feelings will guide her decisions from now on. So stop saying that the show made April a slut or that this decision was out of character. The character we know as April is not the one who made this decision. This decision was made by a woman who feels abandoned and lost. This decision reflects her hope leaving. I agree that April only having been with Jackson was beautiful, but calling her a slut perpetuates the idea that women, particularly Christian women, should be shamed for having multiple partners. April has felt that shame her whole life. That statement would never be made about Jackson, or any other character on the show for that matter, and April should be given the same grace.
But as Sarah said, this story is not over. Job’s story did not end in the middle of his pain. It ended with him being rewarded with twice as much as he had before. I believe that is where April’s story will end, too. She will come full circle and find her faith and happiness again, so don’t be angry at the turn of events in this episode. Just wait for the moment that forces April to feel again. The moment that forces her to stop being numb. That is the moment when everything will change for the better. Because even though April was reminded over and over again that God doesn’t give us more than we can handle, that’s just not true. He does. He gives us so much to handle that we need to turn to him for help and answers. April knows this, but in this moment, she doesn’t believe it. But she will find her faith again. Good things are coming for April, and I still believe for Japril as well.

John Booker Routledge and JJ Maybank have done a plethora of things to look down on them for throughout their friendship. But their recent scheme had to top it all. In the name of thrill, a suggestion made by JJ when intoxicated appealed to John B not only when he was intoxicated, but sober.
This is what brought them to the current situation. John B held a blunt pencil in his hand, doodling on the top right of the page as both, himself and JJ pondered about one last conquest to end off the list. “Something big,” JJ spoke, his eyes set on the wall as he thought of possible ideas.
Two weeks in, both teenagers were nearly level on points, John B around five points above. JJ’s perpetual nature of finding something enjoyable completely tedious had hit him at a Boneyard Kegger. He glanced at the boy he was up against; John B’s hands were wrapped around a random brunette’s waist with his lips connected to her own. Great, he thought to himself.
Of course, the entire point of this challenge was hooking up at the end of the day. But doing so consistently had grown on the blond who was seeking contrasting methods to engage himself whilst gaining points along the way.
And for a guy like JJ, it wasn’t difficult for him to find something to be engaged in— or someone.
Walking to the scene of the party with one of your closest friends, Sarah Cameron, you felt a few eyes on yourself and her. You wore a white bikini top paired with loose black shorts along with small accessories paired to the outfit. You weren’t a huge fan of partying at the Boneyard mainly because you got a minimum amount of thrill out of doing so, but tonight, Sarah had managed to convince you to give it a chance and you hesitantly agreed to doing so.
JJ Maybank’s eyes were set on you as soon as he noticed you sitting at the edge of a sun-bed staring at your phone, disentangled from the party with a glass of beer in your other hand.
“I’m JJ,” he introduced, startling you by the sudden presence as he took a seat beside you, a little too close for your liking. You uncomfortably stood up from the sun-bed, a chuckle leaving your lips at his attempt to string you into a conversation. “I know who you are,”
How would you not? Everybody knows the JJ Maybank; ultimate womaniser and it’s clear to see why. Before you could walk away from his reach, you felt a grip on your wrist that was holding your phone. It wasn’t a harsh move, in fact he held your wrist with as much tenderness, not wanting to venture out of his boundaries with you. “Come on, I don’t bite,” JJ knew that if he didn’t manage to get something out of you, he wouldn’t be able to add any points to his tally for this night considering how monotonous he found hooking up and simply just hooking up after two weeks of doing so.
You reluctantly sat down on the vacant spot beside him, shifting slightly to the side to avoid any unnecessary contact. “You’re making me feel bad here, y’know? I’m not that scary,” you rolled your eyes at his words although they did help you warm up to interacting with him. Both of you remained in silence, JJ unsure of how he should approach you. “I’m y/n,” your introduction took a lot more time than he anticipated, but it managed to cut the awkward silence.
“I know who you are,” he responded, a smug smirk taking over his lips.
You couldn’t help but scoff at his words. “Do you really?” It wasn’t that you didn’t expect him to know you, that was a given. But his attempt to copy what you previously said to him failed as you didn’t mean that you knew just his name.
“Y/N L/N, Kook” he tried to string his words together, add on more about what he knows about you other than your name and your status. He shrugged when he noticed you slightly laughing at him, “So what do you know about me, huh?”
“Well, you’re JJ Maybank. Well-renowned Pogue. Womaniser. Player. Heartbreaker—” you were cut off by JJ sarcastically gasping and putting his hands on his chest. “Well, it’s rude to make accusations as hurtful as that. I am far from any of those things,” you stared at him, trying your best not to burst out laughing but the way he painted a hurt expression across his face, you couldn’t. “Oh, don’t be melodramatic,” you spoke in between of laughs, causing JJ to let out a small chuckle as he shook his head at your reaction.
What happened in the next few minutes was something you never expected. You didn’t expect to be coiled into an enjoyable conversation at this party. And you could never expect to be coiled into a conversation, at best, with JJ Maybank that you mildly enjoyed ever.
JJ was in the middle of narrating a humorous incident of himself and his friends when you heard your phone vibrate, indicating a text. “Boyfriend?” JJ nudged your shoulder playfully after noticing how quick you were to pick up your phone. “No, mother,” you corrected, showing him the message that was filled with absolute rage telling you to come back home.
“Alright, then. Let me have your number and something else before you go,” JJ was hoping that you say yes, not because he wanted to speak to you more but because he wanted points. At the end, this was all just about scoring a few points off some girls and you were the chosen victim. He handed you his phone, one that he rarely used and you dialled your number before saving it.
You felt a rush of heat going through your cheeks. As much as you hated it, you hoped that JJ texted you later tonight. “What else do you want?” you questioned as you texted Sarah to let her know you were leaving. “Well, this,” as he spoke, he leaned closer to your face, so much so that his lips were hovering over your own. You could feel the warmth of his breath against your face, his large hands tenderly cupping your cheeks before he connected his lips to yours.
It began as a compassionate kiss but slowly turned into one that was lustful; his tongue eagerly exploring your mouth displaying the hungriness going through his body whilst you succumbed into the feeling of intimidation with him.
“I’m taking you out soon,” JJ informed you as you stood up from beside him, getting ready to go back home.
JJ didn’t feel guilty. Not until he saw the uncontrollable grin on your face as he saw you enthusiastically type on your phone, perhaps, telling your friends that you had a potential date. But that was soon washed over as soon as he realised he had late-night plans that would definitely be of help for the Playbook.
When he was sure that you had left the area, he pulled out his phone and clicked on John B’s name that was drowned in the numerous names of girls from his messages.
jj: +5 points for getting someone’s number. +15 for making out.
30 points in total. That’s what you were to him. Although he would have loved to go further in order to higher his tally, he knew that you would provide him an adequate amount of help, eventually.
All you could do was wait. Wait for him to message you. But he was too immersed in messaging provocative statements to another girl. Another girl who was unbeknownst of the fact that the only reason JJ showed interest in her was in the name of a few points. And the reason he showed interest in you wasn’t any different either.

pieces - chapter three
Five years ago, Chloe dropped off the face of the Earth. Beca sees her again in the most unexpected place.

“Bec?”
Beca hummed absentmindedly, blinking out of her daze and twisting her head in the direction of the voice.
Sarah smiled gently as she leaned against the doorframe of the kitchen. She cocked an eyebrow, giving a pointed look towards the sink. “I think the pan is clean.”
Beca glanced down, stilling her movements. She had been scrubbing that pan for probably ten minutes now, her thoughts completely consumed by Chloe and what she was supposed to do next.
Chloe clearly didn’t want to see her, and Beca wasn’t going to wait by the phone when it was clear that Chloe was far from okay. She was thinner than Beca remembered, and the look in her eye, the lack of light in those once bright blues, chilled Beca to the bone.
She looked… broken. As though her spirit had repeatedly been battered until all that was left were mere pieces of her old self.
If there were any left at all.
Beca couldn’t stand the thought of not doing anything, and she needed to come up with a plan to help Chloe without driving her into a corner and risk losing her forever.
“What’s going on?” Sarah questioned, pushing off the doorframe and padding over. She rested her hand between Beca’s shoulder blades, her eyebrows knitted together in concern. “You’ve seemed off today.”
Beca released a sigh, setting the pan down into the sink and reaching for the dishtowel laying next to her on the counter to dry her hands. “I’m sorry, I’m just… worried about a friend.”
Sarah nodded slowly. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Sarah was unexpected, to say the least. Beca was a workaholic, and her career was too time-consuming for her to get into the whole dating thing. But Sarah, who happened to work as a barista in Beca’s favorite independent coffee shop, had somehow managed to convince Beca to go out with her. One dinner surprisingly turned into a second date, then a third, and it just like that, it had been almost a year since they officially got together.
Sarah was gentle, patient, understanding, overflowing with positivity, but most of all, incredibly kind. She reminded Beca of Chloe, sometimes. And maybe it was those similar personality traits that drew Beca to her in the first place.
They didn’t live together. Beca could feel that it was the next expected step on her girlfriend’s end, but she didn’t feel ready to commit, yet. She liked her own space, her solitude. So Sarah spent a few nights a week at Beca’s place, like tonight, and Beca was fine with that.
“Not really,” she replied, casting Sarah an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, it’s just-- complicated right now.”
“You need to stop apologizing,” Sarah murmured, her expression soft and loving. Beca let her shoulders sag, ready to apologize again. “I understand. But if you do change your mind and need to let something off your chest, I’m here.”
Beca nodded. “Thanks.”
“Are you coming to bed?”
“Not yet, I wanna get some work done, first.” She leaned in to peck Sarah’s lips. “You go ahead, I’ll join you soon.”
Walking across the living room and past the huge floor to ceiling windows looking over Central Park, Beca made her way to her home office, her happy place. She had bought the Manhattan condo two years ago, making it a requirement during her house-hunt to have a large room with plenty of light and enough space to store all her records and her music equipment. It was also where she kept her Grammys and other prizes, away from the attention as nobody really stepped into her office.
She usually popped a blues album on the record player, enjoying the soothing instrumentals while she replied to various emails, but not tonight. Tonight, she grabbed a yellow legal notepad and her headphones from her desk and curled up on the leather couch tucked in the far corner, then scrolled to her Spotify playlists until she found the one she was looking for.
she is magic
Beca couldn’t remember the last time she had listened to her Chloe playlist, one she had made back in Barden when she was hopelessly in love with her best friend. They were songs that reminded her of Chloe, or songs that Chloe liked. Or used to like, at least.
As lyrics she knew so well poured into her headphones, blocking out the rest of the world, different ones flowed out of Beca’s heart, materializing on the paper in front of her in black ink as she scribbled across the page. Lyrics about friendship, unrequited love, and regrets for listening to her brain and not her heart all these years ago.
It was pushing on two am by the time Beca called it a night. Her eyes burned, her mind felt mushy, but her soul felt a tiny bit lighter. Music had always been her therapy, and writing songs had always proved more efficient than paying a licensed professional, even though it had been years since Beca had last finished one, for lack of inspiration.
Or rather, because of the absence of her muse.
*
She woke up five hours later to a stiff neck and sore back, the bright sunlight pouring in from the windows lining one of her office walls drawing her from her sleep. She had meant to go to bed, before deciding to close her eyes for five minutes right on the couch.
Straightening with a groan, she grabbed her phone and turned it over, hoping to see a text from an unknown number on her screen.
Aubrey Posen [6:23am]
Any news?
Aubrey Posen [6:37am]
Should I come to New York?
Aubrey practiced family law up in Boston. She and Beca saw each other a few times a year, whenever Aubrey was in the city. Bella reunions were a bit more scarce now, with the girls being scattered all around the country. Their last one dated back to a year and a half ago, on the Fourth of July.
Beca ran a hand over her face and heaved out a sigh, swiping her thumb across the screen to unlock it.
Beca [7:16am]
No news yet. I think I’m gonna wait a few days before I head back to the club, if she doesn’t call in the meantime that is. The manager gave me serious sleazy vibes and I’m sure he could blacklist me if I’m too insistent. I don’t think there’s any need for you to come down for now. I’ll keep you posted.
Hitting send, Beca pushed to her feet and shuffled out of her office, hanging a left down the hall towards the kitchen. A note next to her coffee thermos sat on the island.
Missed you last night, but I hope you got whatever you needed done. I had to leave for my shift, you’re welcome to swing by for your second coffee of the day and your morning kiss ;) have a good day!
Sarah xx
Guilt swooped in over picking old feelings about an ex-almost over her girlfriend, and Beca let her head hang forward, releasing a grown. She was far from an expert at this relationship thing, but she cared about Sarah a lot and didn’t want to mess that up.
Beca shook off the sleepiness lingering in her bones and the stiffness in her muscles with a long, hot shower, then got ready for her day. She usually got to the office at 8 sharp, but it was already 7:54 by the time she was out the door, and her commute lasted about twenty minutes, so she wouldn’t get the chance to stop by Sarah’s workplace.
To: Sarah
I’m sorry, I got caught up in work last night and ended up falling asleep on the couch around 2. Come over tonight? I’ll cook dinner. Have a good shift.
Her morning was spent in the studio canning vocals for girl in red’s new album, a project Beca was stocked about as she was BMLJ’s most promising artist for this year’s Grammy Awards.
“That was awesome, Marie,” Beca spoke into the microphone, giving her a thumbs-up through the glass. “Let’s take a lunch break and resume in an hour?”
“Sounds good,” the younger woman agreed with a smile as she took off her headphones.
Beca headed back to her office down the hall and checked her phone for any new messages (finding none important), before shrugging on her thick winter coat and screwing her beanie over her head.
“I’ll be back in an hour, Gina!” She told her assistant on route to the elevator.
As Sarah’s workplace was just five blocks south from the label, Beca figured she would eat lunch there as she wasn’t able to stop by that morning. She stopped in the convenience store across the street from the coffee shop to buy Sarah her favorite magazine as she knew her break was coming up soon and she’d have something to read.
Beca was scanning the press stand for that specific magazine, not paying attention to the person walking into the store until they spoke.
“A pack of Marlboro, please.”
Beca would recognize that voice anywhere. Her head snapped up so fast she felt something in her neck pull, and she was rounding the stand before she even registered giving her feet the order to move. “Chloe?”
Chloe glanced over to her right and froze for a second, before fishing for a twenty in her jacket pocket and handing it to the cashier. “Are you following me or something?”
Given their last encounter, Beca wasn’t surprised by Chloe’s snark, so she gave as good as she got. “You came in after I did, so maybe I should ask you that question.”
Chloe stuffed the cigarette pack and the change into her pocket. “What do you want, Beca?”
“To talk,” she replied, softly. “One coffee, that’s it. And if you decide you really don’t want me in your life, then I won’t bother you again. I promise.”
Chloe seemed to ponder on that for a few beats. “One coffee.”
“There’s a shop right across the street.”
Taking her to the place her girlfriend worked at? Probably not the brightest idea, but she was afraid Chloe might go back on her decision if they spent too long finding someplace else.
When Chloe nodded, Beca took the lead and stepped outside, forgetting all about that magazine as she racked her brain about what she should say. Tactfulness wasn’t her greatest suit; Aubrey would be so much better at this.
They stepped inside Devocion and Beca picked a table in the corner, shrugging off her coat and draping it over the back of her chair. Chloe kept her jacket and beanie on, a bit hunched on herself as she sat down in the chair opposite Beca’s.
“Beca?”
Beca glanced towards Sarah as she approached, wearing a waist apron with the café logo on it. Her dark blonde hair was woven back in a French braid, a few strands escaping, and curiosity swirled in her green eyes as they flickered to Chloe.
Okay, in hindsight, bringing Chloe here was a terrible idea.
“Hey, um, Sarah, this is Chloe, a friend from college.” She cleared her throat. “Chloe, this is my girlfriend, Sarah.”
“Nice to meet you,” Sarah replied brightly, her smile fading a little when all Chloe offered was a distant nod. Sarah met Beca’s gaze briefly, clearing her throat. “What can I get you guys?”
“My usual. You want anything to eat, Chlo?”
The nickname rolled off her tongue so naturally, Beca didn’t even catch it.
Chloe shook her head. “Just a black coffee.”
“Coming right up.”
“Thanks,” Beca said as Sarah spun around on her heels, her focus shifting to Chloe. “So um, I wanted to apologize for the other day and putting you on the spot at the club. I just… wasn’t sure how else to talk to you.”
“I can give you some of the money back if you need it.”
Beca furrowed her brow, not having expected that. “No, no. I… it’s fine. I don’t care about money.”
Something flashed in Chloe’s eyes at that, something Beca couldn’t quite pinpoint.
Sarah came back with two coffees before she could analyze it further, setting the mugs down on the table. “Your club sandwich will be here in a few, babe.”
Beca nodded, casting her a small, appreciative smile.
Chloe straightened a bit in her seat, cradling the mug with both hands. “I’m not sure what you expect me to say or do, Beca.”
Beca licked her lips. “I was hoping we could… hang out from time to time. I’ve missed you, Chlo. So has Aubrey.”
The mention of Aubrey made Chloe lookup. “Does she live in New York, too?”
“Um no, in Boston. She’s a lawyer. But she’d come down to have coffee, or lunch, or whatever you feel like doing. In a heartbeat.”
Chloe shook her head. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
What little hope flared in the pit of Beca’s belly upon Chloe showing interest in Aubrey’s life vanished. “Why not?”
“I told you. I’m not the same person anymore. I’m-- I’m not…”
Beca tilted her head to the side. “You’re not what?” She pressed gently.
Chloe’s gaze fleeted out the window as her rather calm demeanor now radiated agitation. Her knee started bouncing and her fingers tightened around the mug, and it was as though Chloe was battling against her own thoughts.
She was itching to reach across the table to rest her hand over her wrist in a sort of grounding gesture, but something told her that would have the opposite effect.
“Chloe?” Beca attempted once more, her voice as soft as she could muster, as it seemed like Chloe was on the brink of bolting.
The tear slipping out of Chloe’s eye tore her heart into two. “I-I have to go.”
Her chair screeched as she pushed it back roughly, and she was nearly out the door by the time Beca scrambled to her feet.
It was lunch-hour rush in one of the busiest avenues in Manhattan, and Chloe had already disappeared in the crowd when she reached the exit, leaving Beca to helplessly wonder how someone like Chloe, once the epitome of sunshine, got herself trapped in so much darkness.

Directors/Writers: “Ok Sarah, for the season finale, we are going to have you insinuate and give the vibe to the viewers that there is something brewing between Jackson and Maggie romantically. I mean, what will offer better drama and angst than your character in a love triangle with Jackson and Maggie?! It’s awesome, right?!?!”
In Sarah’s mind: “Ok, this storyline is completely and utterly stupid! How can I convey my disgust on-screen without actually conveying to the writers and directors that this idea is COMPLETELY ridiculous?!?”

Cock in a Box (part 1)
How they convinced me I’ll never know. Well, that’s not true. The allure of free alcohol after dropping nearly $17k on my upcoming wedding certainly helped fuel my willingness to participate in this embarrassing contest.
Without going too far into a back story that I’m sure you guys don’t care about, this past weekend was my bachelor party. I was taken to Atlanta by a group of my good buddies and the 7 of us in total were living it up for a long, 3-day weekend in and out of bars, hotels, and strip clubs. It was our first night there when Kevin heard about a bar with an unusual game: Cock in a Box.
The gist: there’s basically a line of glory holes that you stick your junk through for the audience to vote on which they like best. All participants get 2 free drinks (well, of course; no top shelf stuff) BUT the chosen winner gets free drinks all night, whatever they want.
The downside is that if you’re chosen to be the winner, you have to accept the award so everyone would know it was YOUR dick. Apparently pictures are allowed at this bar.
With enough liquid courage in us we all reluctantly agreed to give it a go, some of us probably more excited or terrified than the others. I thought to myself, I’ll get two free drinks and some people will have a picture of my dick but no way to link it back to me. I mean, my cock was fine, Sarah didn’t seem to have any complaints, but I knew I was average at best. I assume the crowd will go for the biggest one and I wager one of my buds is packing something bigger. I’d hate to be them. Or would I? I guess I wouldn’t mind a couple extra inches.
Anyway, we got to the bar and it became clear pretty quickly that this wasn’t a bar catering to female clientele.
“It’s a fucking gay bar, guys!” Brad exclaimed when we got there.
“Well,” Rodger said, “I guess that makes sense. I’ve never really seen a lot of women vying to see a bunch of dicks.”
“That’s not the impression I got from your wife,” Dan joked.
“Oh ha ha ha.”
I spoke the first words of hesitation, “do we still want to go through with this?” It was one thing to be showing my dick to a bunch of female strangers, it was another thing for them to be gay men.
Kevin doubled down, “It’s still free booze. Who knows, someone might even buy me some drinks in an effort to get lucky!”
The group razzed him on that and how not even a troll would find him hot, but I did have to admit he had a point. Our group was, generally, good looking. We’d all taken care of ourselves in the years following college sports and while some of us packed on a few pounds since the glory days we were all still big. I knew gay guys liked that at least.
“It’s Ben’s big weekend, let him make the choice,” said Mike.
Sean, my little brother, was the last of our group to speak, “I’m not a big fan of this idea either, but if Ben’s in… brother solidarity.”
I leaned into the crap Sarah was always spouting out about ‘live in the moment’ or ‘enjoy the ride of life’ and said, “fuck it. Let’s get some free drinks.”
At the front part of the club, Kevin expressed our interest to participate in the game. It quickly surfaced that we were a bachelor party of straight guys and that seemed to tantalize the person taking covers. He let us in for free!
Once we were inside one of the staff ushered us over near the back of the club and explained what we were to do. Apparently we had arrived just on time as the game starts around midnight on Fridays only.
There were 10 boxes near the back part of a stage where I assumed drag shows or beauty contests or something went on. You could get into them from behind the stage so no one could see which one you got into. They were basically just telephone booths made out of plywood. Not super appealing but I guess did the job.
The staff member said once we were in there the MC would start the show and more or less we’d be told what to do from there. They would narrow down contestants by number, which was painted on the outside of the boxes as well as the inside so we knew what number we were.
The guy checked us all out, salivating, and recommended we play with ourselves a bit when we get into the booth to ‘fluff up a bit.’ That idea sort of grossed me out and I knew I wasn’t going to be winning anyway so I already decided this crowd would be getting a soft, limp anonymous dick in exchange for free booze.
It’s probably worth noting that all my buddies and myself included are white(ish). I’m not racist, I swear, but at the small Tennessee college I went to there weren’t many people of color. I say this only to demonstrate that I felt like I had a good level of anonymity since it would be my dick against 9 other dicks that probably looked like mine.
The staff guy said to choose a booth when Sean asked where the other 3 guys were. There were 10 booths and we only made 7. “Oh,” he said, “when management heard you seven were together and straight, he decided to make it just you guys.”
We looked at each other and silently decided if we were still okay with this but I guess what does 3 other dudes matter. I guess now we knew one of us would be getting free drinks. That is, if they accepted their win.
We all walked up and into our respective booths. Kevin was beside me to the left and Dan was to my right. The other guys filed in. When I got in and drew the curtain behind me for privacy, I realized that I was NOT in box “3” like I thought I would be but “5.”
I heard Kevin yell, “I guess they randomize the box order too.”
Then Sean called out, “That’s good, I was worried you’d be sad when they talked about how small #2’s dick was and we’d all know it was you!”
Laughter among the guys, including myself, rang out.
In the box, there wasn’t much and not a lot of room. There was the infamous hole on the front side about three and a half feet up. I wondered what shorter dudes would do but then I also saw the wooden blocks stacked up on the side. I guess that’s for them to stand on if they don’t reach the hole.
The hole.
I looked at it timidly. My nerves were starting to climb as I realized what I had signed up for. What we had all signed up for. The plywood had been sanded smooth around the lip of the hole so my fear of splinters was gone but not my fear of the unknown number of gay dudes on the other side eagerly awaiting to look at our dicks. MY dick!
I was starting to second guess this whole thing and chicken out. The guys may not let me live that down. Well, I’m not going first at least.
The music faded out after the end of the song and someone cleared their throat into a mic.
“Gooooood evening, queers, steers, and bears. Oh my! Welcome to this week’s Cock in a Box competition. I’m your host, Anita Gudphuck, and we have a super special treat for you men tonight.”
My palms were getting sweaty.
“For you see, tonight we only have 7 contestants…”
Boos erupted from the crowd along with vocal pleads that they wanted to see more dick. I swear, gay people.
“But the seven we have are… straight guys on a bachelor party weekend!!!”
The original distaste for the limited offering turned into an uproar of cheers and whistles. What’s the deal with gay guys liking straight guys so much anyway?
“But, we’re all in for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity if we all agree to play by some secret, sexy rules. Will you all play along?”
More cheers from the audience. What did he mean by ‘secret’ rules?
“Okay, now, no one shout out the secret rules as we don’t want our mystery men to know. Up on screen there, you’ll see what to do.”
There was a few moments of silence and then some laughs, some ‘oh my goods,’ and a ton of applause and cheering.
“Do you think you can all follow those rules?”
“YESSSS!” the crowd yelled.
“Okay, well then let’s play Cock in a Box! Straight boys back there, are you ready?”
I didn’t want to shout out but I guess none of my buddies did either. Maybe that would reveal us when we had to go out and get our drinks.
“I’ll take silence as a ‘yes, ma’am!’ Now, get your cocks in hand and ready to be judged! I recommend a few pumps and shakes to liven the guy up.”
I can’t believe I’m doing this. How did I let Kevin convince me to do this? How did he convince all of us to do this? I undid my jeans and shucked them down my thighs. Looking at the bulge in my boxer briefs I took a deep breath. There’s no way I can do this right? No way any of us could do this, right?
“Okay boys, Let’s! See! Those! Cocks!”
I stood there for a moment, unwilling to be the first in case this was some sort of prank. The seconds felt like eternity.
“Are all you straight boys shy? Or are you just embarrassed by your tiny dicks?”
The audience laughed and started to call out things along the lines of ‘show us what you’re working with.”
I was sure we had all gotten cold feet when the crowd started applauding.
“There’s our first contestant! Ooo and what a nice dick!” Whistles in the audience agreed with her statement.
“Oh and another! And another! That’s three straight boy dongs right there.”
They’re actually doing it. Fucking hell. Well, tipping my metaphorical hat to Sarah’s dumb slogans, ‘when in Rome…’ I reached into my briefs, pulled my dick out and stepped forward, guiding it through the hole.
Even more cheers through the audience, louder than the others it seemed like.
“Four, Five! That’s some nice looking -- oo Six!”
“Come’on last guy, don’t be shy. Your friends all took the plunge.”
I wonder who was getting cold feet. I noticed now that there was a mild warmth on my dick which I now wagered was spotlights making sure people got good looks.
A final round of applause, “and there he is. Nothing to be ashamed of there, number 8.”
And just like that, we all had our dicks out to a crowd of gay guys on my bachelor party weekend. I didn’t necessarily want to be on the other side, but imagining the site was ridiculous. A long plywood wall with seven cocks sticking out of it with numbers crudely painted above them.
Dicks of straight men in a gay club, selling out the exposure of our junk for a couple free drinks. This would make a weird story to tell in the future I guess, at least among ourselves. I wasn’t planning on sharing this with anyone else.
Little did I know how weird, embarrassing, and hot the night was going to go.

* Becoming one of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood has gone straight to Ana de Armas' head -- the cast and crew are often left waiting for the actress to emerge from her trailer on the set of the new action thriller The Gray Man -- Ana's got a lot going on and she's juggling several different projects, as well as photo shoots and phone calls with her team and people don't stay mad at her for too long, but they have nicknamed her Ana de Diva, but she isn't upset by the scathing moniker because she's a big name now, and with that comes a lot of responsibility and the way she sees it, there are worse things than being called a diva

Page 21: Matt James and Rachael Kirkconnell were spotted in NYC together, sparking speculation that the former Bachelor couple have rekindled their relationship -- the pair parted ways while the show was still airing after photos of the graphic designer at a plantation-themed college party in 2018 surfaced on social media -- Rachael made a mistake but she owned up to it and was willing to learn from it and it didn't change her feelings for Matt or vice versa and Matt was in love with Rachael too and he couldn't just turn those feelings off so no one would be surprised if they decided to reconcile
* Michael B. Jordan's girlfriend Lori Harvey was left reeling over photos of the actor sharing a smooch with Chante Adams on the set of their new movie A Journal for Jordan -- of course, they were just shooting a scene for the film, but Lori was still annoyed and she asked Michael about it, and he brushed it off and explained it was part of the job but Lori still has her suspicions and she's been thinking about dropping by the set just so she can keep a very close eye on them

Victory - Oneshot
Pairing: Pedro Pascal x female reader
Warnings: cussing, teasing
Requested?: Yes from this ask by @bloggerchic14 - I was hoping if you can do one where reader is nominated for best director at the Oscars and she didn’t expect to win but when she does ends up in shock and Pedro ends up walking up stage with her. They then end up at the Vanity fair party and reader parties hard and teases Pedro. Thank you ☺️
Author’s note: none
~ ~ ~
You’re jittery as you sit in the limo. You breathe in and out trying to calm your nerves. Your hands running over the simple black strapless gown you are wearing.
The man sitting next to you places his hand on your arm, trying to calm you.
“We haven’t even walked the red carpet,” your dad whispers.
You swallow, “you aren’t the one nominated for an award. Talk is I could win. I won at the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs – which was still surprising, the Critics’ Choice Awards. An Oscar would complete the shelf of the other awards.”
He laughs wholeheartedly, “they aren’t on a shelf. You use them as bookends or paperweights.”
You shrug and laugh, “you know what I mean.”
You had taken a family member or a close friend as your date to each awards show. You took your mother to the Golden Globes (your mom nearly fainted when she met Tom Hanks), your best friend to the BAFTAs (this included a well-deserved girls trip), your sibling to the Critics’ Choice Awards (which they found dull, but they got to meet their celebrity crush), and your father’s now going with you to the Oscars.
Your father and mother had bickered about what awards show they would attend with you. You had picked the Golden Globes and the Oscars for them because those award shows meant the most to you.
They eventually drew straws. Your mother getting the Golden Globes, and your father getting the Oscars.
You knew they couldn’t be more prouder of you when you had told them you had been nominated for directing your first movie.
“We’re ecstatic for you honey!”
“Over the moon!”
“Proud of our baby girl!”
“We knew you could do it!”
They both had exclaimed when you called them to tell them the news of each nomination.
Now with three awards under your belt you were ready to claim the fourth but also feared you weren’t going to get it. You’re up against some big names – Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and David Lynch. You are the newcomer, the first timer. It would be a rarity for the Academy to award you when they could easily go with an oldie tried and true person who has been directing nearly their entire life.
The door opens and your father looks at you, “ready?”
You smile weakly, “I guess. Let’s do this.”
-------
Inside the Dolby Theatre celebrities are mingling as you and your father are escorted down one of the many aisles towards your seats. The usher pauses at the fifth row up from the stage.
“Miss Y/L/N,” the usher smiles, “here are your two seats. Enjoy!”
“Thank you kindly,” your father remarks as the usher disappears.
You breathe a sigh of relief at being on the aisle. You didn’t want to parade down an entire row of people in case your name was called when they announced the winner.
Several people were familiar to you as you looked around, most of them your cast. They all greeted you with smiles and hugs.
Sarah Paulson pulls you into a tight embrace.
“I’m betting big on you tonight,” Sarah whispers as she pulls away.
“Please don’t tell me that!” You laugh.
“They’d be wrong not to give you the damn award. You’re the first female director to be nominated in a few years and your first nomination ever!” Sarah retorts.
“Thanks for the vote of confidence,” you reply as the lights begin to dim and brighten which indicated five minutes to show time, “no Holland?”
“She’s working. I brought Pedro,” Sarah looks around the theatre, “he’s here somewhere. Hopefully he’s here before the show begins.”
Right before the orchestra begins playing you hear a light “excuse me” from beside your father, who took the aisle seat.
Your father stands then you do.
The man nods at your father, “thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” your father whispers as he sits.
The man then looks at you and smiles, “thank you.”
You nod your head and smile in return. You hadn’t met Pedro Pascal prior to this evening. He was someone you were wanting to work with because of seeing him in Narcos. Sarah had even praised him when you two were discussing your next movie one day.
“Pedro would be fantastic!” Sarah had exclaimed.
“I’ve seen his work in Narcos, nothing else.” You had remarked.
“He’s versatile. Done plenty of stage work, movies, T.V. shows. If you are wanting to do a modern reimagining of The Lady Eve, I think you should reach out to Pedro’s people. You won’t regret it.” She had leaned in and whispered, “he loves that movie. One of his faves.”
Now you glance at Sarah as you take a seat. She gives you a sly smile. You know she remembers your conversation as well. She wants you to meet Pedro and show you he deserves to be directed by you.
*
“Pedro this is Y/N,” Sarah remarks a couple of hours into the show.
Pedro smiles at you and holds out his hand, “I know who she is Sarah. Yet I haven’t met her.”
You take his hand and shake it. “Nice to meet you Pedro.”
“She wants to direct a modern reimagining of The Lady Eve,” Sarah implies with a smile towards you.
Pedro turns his dark brown eyes to you. Their opened wide and his face is a look of seriousness. “Really?”
You blush and smile, “yes.”
“How would you tell it?”
“I’m thinking of having the man play the con artist,” you reply.
“Are you working on a script? Or have someone working on one?” Pedro asks eagerly.
You laugh, “Phoebe Waller-Bridge and I are working on a script together.”
“I’d love to read it! Even audition!” Pedro smiles widely.
You glance at him, “I’ll keep you in mind.”
“Oh, come on!” Pedro laughs.
“Y/N,” your father whispers, “your category is up next.”
Right, you think as your heart begins pounding loudly inside of your chest.
Pedro squeezes your hand and whispers, “good luck.”
You smile in return then move your eyes to the stage.
Natalie Portman smiles brightly for the camera as she reads the teleprompter, “the nominees for best director are: David Lynch, Y/F/N Y/L/N, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino.”
Your eyes are on the screen as small clips from each of the movies are played. You shrink in your seat as you watch a cameraman kneel beside your row and place the lens on you.
“You’re okay,” your father whispers as he leans over, “breathe.”
You try but you know one of the men will get it. They’ll go with the tried and true who have won before. Not the debut director, not the newcomer.
“The Oscar goes to,” a pause as the envelope is opened, “wow! The Oscar goes to Y/F/N Y/L/N!”
Natalie Portman said my name, you think as tears flood your eyes. My name? My name!
Everyone around you stands and applauds. The whole theatre stands to their feet and applauds.
Your father leans down and touches your shoulder.
“You have to go get it,” he says with a smirk.
You nod as you stand.
Sarah’s right there and embraces you tightly, “told you!”
Pedro’s pushed back against his folded seat as he lets Sarah hug you. He winks at you as you pull away from Sarah and turn towards the aisle.
The thundering applause fills your ears as you begin to take a step up the stairs towards Natalie and the Oscar. You’re focused on making sure you don’t trip yet you do.
You laugh as you sit up and smile. Pedro’s right there with a hand to help you up.
“Thank you,” you whisper.
“You’re welcome,” he whispers in return.
He tries to let your hand go but you’re gripping it tightly. Your nerves are getting the best of you.
Pedro smiles as he hooks your hand in the crook of his arm. He guides you up the remaining stairs, escorting you towards Natalie and the microphone. The Oscar statue you are about to claim as yours.
Once Natalie embraces you and hands you the award, Pedro takes a step back and lets you have the spotlight. The applause dies down as people take their seats and you wring your hands around the Oscar you now have in your possession.
You wipe at your tears, “Um, there’s so many to thank. I apologize beforehand if I forget anyone,” you pause, “I’d like to thank the Academy. Paramount Studios for taking a chance on me and this movie I love. Plan B productions for a chance as well. The amazing crew I was placed with, thank you. My wonderful cast – Hugh Laurie, Katie Holmes, Emily Blunt, Sterling K. Brown, and Sarah Paulson. Thank you. As well as to the other amazing cast members I appreciate you all. To my close friends and my dear family I can never thank you enough for loving me for me, and supporting me for when I wanted to come out here and start directing. From T.V. shows to the big screen, directing will always be my passion. To all the girls out there wanting to direct, take a chance and follow your dreams, follow your heart. I will be your biggest supporter.” You smile widely and raise the Oscar in the air, “thank you again!”
The entire theatre erupts in applause as you walk off the stage with Natalie and Pedro.
You’re grinning from ear to ear as Natalie releases you from the hug she gave you once you were in line to make your way to the media room.
“Congrats again!” She smiles.
“Thanks,” you smile in return.
Your eyes watch her walk away then land on Pedro who was stopped by Kit Harrington. You had hoped you’d be able to talk to him more. You wanted to talk to him more. You wanted to thank him properly for being there to help you up the stairs.
“Miss Y/L/N?” Someone with a headset on their head draws your face back around.
You hum and raise a brow.
“The press is ready.”
You smile, “thanks.”
The person opens the curtain and the cameras start flashing as you walk in. You take one glance back at Pedro hoping he’s going to the same after party as you are.
-------
The Vanity Fair after party is in full swing after the limo driver took your father home. He didn’t want to spend all night out on the town, which you preferred because you were going to party hard for as long as you could before returning in the wee hours of the night. And there was someone you needed to cross paths with again – Pedro.
Inside you are swarmed by actors and actresses congratulating you, wanting to know what you’re doing next, wondering if they could give you a call about auditioning for anything you do in the future. They give you glasses of champagne. Toasting you over abundantly, making you sip on the frothy and bubbly liquid. It’s all overwhelming until you feel a hand grasp yours and pull you away.
“Give her a chance to breathe!” Sarah nearly shouts as she drags you away from the horde of people.
You giggle as Sarah pulls you away and into a corner. She swipes two glasses of champagne off a tray from a passing by waiter.
Sarah clinks her glass to yours, “congrats!”
“Thanks,” you smile not bothering to take a sip. “I’ve had too much of this.”
“Understandable,” Sarah pauses as she gulps down her glass then takes yours, “so, Academy Award winner director Y/F/N Y/L/N directing a remake of The Lady Eve starring Pedro Pascal…”
You giggle, “where is he by the way?”
“Oh, your rescuer?” Sarah giggles loudly. She’s had a little too much alcohol already. “He’s here somewhere. He saw you trip, and zoom did he go to rescue you. When he got back to the seat I whispered, ‘her dad’s right there Pedro.’”
“What was his reaction?”
“’Well at least I scored brownie points with him.’” Sarah laughs.
You giggle as the alcohol courses through your veins. You place a hand on your stomach when it growls. You realize it’s empty, and you’re starving.
“Is there food here?” You ask absentmindedly.
“Yeah but it’s mostly finger foods,” Sarah smiles, “here he is!”
Pedro smiles as he hands Sarah a napkin, “food.”
“Share with the lady,” Sarah points at you as she swallows a couple of cheese cubes.
Pedro smiles at you and holds out another napkin. It’s filled with cheese cubes, crackers, even a chocolate covered strawberry.
“Hey,” Pedro pouts, “the strawberry was mine!”
You smile as you bite a small piece, “have the rest.”
“You may the whole thing. It’s not like I fought a swarm of people to get just one!”
You finish the decadent dessert. Not sure if it’s the alcohol or not, you lean over and brush your lips across his.
Pedro inwardly moans as he tastes the chocolate strawberry on your lips. He swipes his tongue across your lips. He tastes the champagne once you let him in.
You pull back breathlessly and look into Pedro’s deep brown eyes. “I, uh, I…”
Pedro smiles, reaches out, and runs a finger down your cheek, “it’s okay.”
Sarah is able to tell she’s no longer needed. “I’m gonna leave you two to it. Goodnight.”
“Night,” you and Pedro say in unison. His eyes and your eyes are one another.
“Thank you for coming to my rescue,” you say after seconds of silence.
Pedro grins lopsidedly, “you’re welcome. I do hope at least it scored me some brownie points.”
“Why?”
“I want to be a part of The Lady Eve.”
“Script’s not done. And I’m currently working with Netflix on a series.”
“I’d like to be forefront and center when you go to producers. Tell them Pedro Pascal needs to be in this movie, will be in this movie,” he remarks with a laugh.
“Are you desperate for a role where one sees your face?” You ask.
Pedro raises an eyebrow, “I was informed you’ve only seen Narcos from my long resume.”
“I see you and Sarah have talked.”
Pedro shrugs, “I inquired about you on the way here. She’s the one who worked with you. She even raved about you while you were filming. Said you were extremely kind and knew what you were doing, what you wanted and needed from the cast and crew.”
“Glad to know at least one person likes me,” you jokingly laugh.
“Everyone likes you Y/N,” Pedro remarks. “You’re kind, sweet. A great kisser.”
You inwardly laugh then run your hand up Pedro’s arm. “You’re too kind Pedro, too sweet.”
Pedro holds in his moan as your hand runs up his arm then over his chest and down his stomach.
You lean forward and brush your mouth against his. You feel his arms wrap around you and pull you close, deepening the kiss. You moan as his hands travel up and down your back, occasionally touching your bare skin.
Heat rises in your body as you move your hands across his shoulders down his chest. You finally loop them around his neck and run your fingers through his hair.
Pedro pulls faintly away. He looks into your Y/E/C eyes. He leans down and nuzzles your neck. Your skin is delicate and warm.
“Pedro,” you moan lowly as his mustache tickles your skin.
You snake a hand down his chest. You run it teasingly over his crotch and find him hard.
Fuck, your mind screams as pleasure intensifies inside of you.
Pedro hisses as he pulls back, “you’re a tease too. A wicked tease.”
“You are too Pedro,” you remark as you press your body against his.
You want Pedro, need Pedro. Your body is aching to have his mouth and hands all over it.
You would never have the courage to be this blunt, but with the alcohol pumping through your veins you do. You look at Pedro in seriousness, “please get me out of here Pedro. I need you in more ways than one. If you know—”
Pedro kisses you soundly and grabs your hand as he pulls you towards the exit, “I know what you mean Y/N. I want to get us both out of here so we’re able to enjoy each other fully especially with our clothes off.”
You knew this was going to be a night you’d never forget – you won your Oscar, and you had the ultimate lap of victory when you and Pedro finally made it into his bed - sans clothes.

Childhood
Tracey Emin was born in Surrey, in England. She grew up in Margate, on the coast of Kent, with her twin brother Paul. She lived with her mother in a successful seaside hotel, where she claims she was treated "like a princess." Her Turkish father lived with them for half of the week, spending the other half with his wife and other children. After a few years, Emin's father left and took his money with him, leaving Emin's mother bankrupt.
The family was then forced to live in poverty; Emin later recalled that they had two meters, one for gas and one for electricity, but they could never afford to have them both on at the same time. When she was 13, Emin was raped; something that she later claimed, "happened to a lot of girls."
Early Training and Work
Emin left Margate to study fashion at the Medway College of Design between 1980 and 1982. She met the avant-garde personality Billy Childish, who was also a student at the college until he was expelled. Her relationship with the colourful writer, their work at Childish's small press, and her study of printing in Maidstone Art College, are all what Emin considers important artistic experiences in her maturing as an artist.
In 1987, Emin's relationship with Childish ended and she moved to London. She studied for an MA in painting at the Royal College of Art, which she received in 1989. However, after leaving the college she went through an emotionally traumatic period in which she had two abortions, and this experience caused her to destroy all the work she had made at the Royal College.
While she was still coming to terms with her own artistic practice, she influenced a reactive movement called Stuckism, which sought to promote figurative painting rather than the sort of conceptual art that Emin was focused on at the time. It was founded in 1999 by Emin's ex-boyfriend Billy Childish. The movement's name was inspired by Emin, when she had told Childish his paintings were "Stuck! Stuck! Stuck!"
In the years after breaking up with Childish, once Emin rose into fame, he became very vocal about Emin's art practice. He opposed the art business and in turn the popularity of her work and said, "Taking cultural things and turning them into mere commerce is very dangerous. Professional football has ruined football and professional art has ruined art. A decadence and superficiality have set in and sometimes I wonder if maybe we have got what we deserve. I think it is odd that the Brit artists cite the influence of someone like Duchamp who was involved in anti-art and who was taking the piss out of the pompous pretentious art establishment. The biggest irony is that now they are that pretentious art establishment themselves, yet they still put forward this idea that they are undermining something." Childish's own Stuckism movement is more about rejecting the frenzy of conceptual art and sought to champion the work of figurative painters. The Stuckism movement is still quite active and is famous for protesting the Turner Prize every year to show their continued opposition. The Stuckism art movement is an action against artists such as Emin, and yet her artistic presence is the basis for their fundamentals, for their movement would not exist without Emin. She inspired the movement not only through her criticism of Childish's work, but also through her artwork and the public acceptance of her work. They may be in opposition to her but require her brand of art fame to continue their plight.
Mature Period
Upon moving to London, Emin become friendly with many of the other artists who would later be called the Young British Artists, which included Sarah Lucas and Damien Hirst. The group began to exhibit together in 1988, although Emin did not join ranks with them artistically until the early 1990s. The gallerist Charles Saatchi was a supporter and collector of the artists from the beginning of their careers and is often given credit for "discovering" them. The name of the group was from the title of an exhibition at Saatchi's gallery in March 1992 titled "Young British Artists I" but it was artist and writer Michael Corris who referred to the group of artists with that title in an ArtForum article in May 1992. Often all artists of that generation from Britain are called YBAs as it now holds a historic reference.
In 1993, Emin joined with Sarah Lucas to open a shop called "The Shop" in Bethnal Green, which was in the East End of London. They sold work by both artists, including anything from t-shirts to ash trays, to paper mache sex toys to dresses, adding a previously little-seen commercialism to their artistic practices, which would become a defining feature of Young British Art.
Emin had her first solo exhibition at London's White Cube in the same year. Named My Major Retrospective, Emin drew together a collection of personal items and photographs, creating a part-installation part-archive with a strongly autobiographical slant. This element of autobiography is key to her ongoing practice.
In the middle of the 1990s, Emin began a relationship with curator and art world figure Carl Freedman. Freedman was friendly with Damien Hirst and had worked with him on some of his important early shows that introduced Young British Art to the public. In 1994 the couple travelled in the US together, where Emin paid her way by doing readings. They also spent time in Whitstable on the Kent coast together, often using a beach hut that Emin purchased with her friend Sarah Lucas. She has spoken about how much she enjoyed owning property for the first time saying, "I was completely broke, and it was really brilliant, having your own property by the sea." In 1999 she later turned the hut into an artwork by bringing the structure from the beachfront into the Saatchi Gallery and calling the work, The Last Thing I Said to You is Don't Leave Me Here (1999).
In 1995, Freedman curated a show called "Minky Manky" for which he encouraged Emin to make artwork larger and less ephemeral. The result was her well-known work Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963-1995 (1995), which was a tent embroidered with the names of everyone with whom she had shared a bed, sexual or otherwise. This artistic touch through words is a common theme throughout her work. Emin uses her own handwriting, as seen in her neon messages, embroidered words, monoprints and hand-cut letters for her applique designs. Misspellings and grammar mistakes are present in her artworks, as if to add humiliations and failures to her authenticity.
Emin first came to the attention of the wider British public when she appeared on a television show about the Turner Prize in 1997, where she was belligerent and drunk, swearing on live television among a panel of academics. She finished her appearance by saying, "I'm leaving now, I wanna be with my friends, I wanna be with my mum. I'm gonna phone her, and she's going to be embarrassed about this conversation, this is live, and I don't care. I don't give a fuck about it." She ended with, "you people aren't relating to me now, you've lost me" before taking off her lapel mic while still talking and walking off in the middle of the live show.
Two years after her drunken television appearance, Emin was nominated for the Turner Prize for her controversial work My Bed (1998). Only one British artist of the four nominated can win the prize, and Emin lost the Prize that year to Steve McQueen. The surrounding press coverage dubbed her the "bad girl of British art". At the time, many voiced opinions about the types of stains and impurities contained in her artwork, even the lowest English tabloids weighed in. Although she never won the Turner Prize (yet), it was the catalyst for her fame.
Her work evolved during this period and she developed a more specific style. Her choice to use needlework and applique techniques place her work within a tradition of feminist discourse within modern and contemporary art. These techniques were considered domestic handicrafts and were typically considered low in the hierarchy of art, and a part of normalized feminine practice - a concept that Feminist art has waged war against with significant success. Emin herself has no fear of being associated with "low art" or "women's work", for she embraces her own sexuality and femininity; and most certainly places importance upon it.
Current Practice
Emin's personal life and public appearances have become less sensational since the late 1990s. Her work is in a variety of important collections, and many celebrities have become collectors of her art, including Elton John and George Michael. She has also become friends with many famous people from the music and fashion worlds, including Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones, Vivian Westwood, Kate Moss, and Madonna. Madonna has described Emin as "intelligent and wounded and not afraid to expose herself."
In 2007, Emin was made a Royal Academician at London's Royal Academy of the Arts, marking her ascent into the upper echelons of British art society and her acceptance by the establishment. She was later also made a professor of drawing at the institution. In 2013, she was included on a list of the 100 most powerful women in the country by BBC Radio 4, and in the same year she was awarded a CBE for her services to the arts.
For the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 Emin was the second female British artist to be nominated to represent the British Pavilion (the first was Rachel Whiteread in 1997). She exhibited a work titled, Borrowed Light which featured many of her early drawings alongside her recent works. The show received mixed critique, and she was criticized for being limited in her art practice.
In 2015, Emin took the unusual decision to "get married" to a rock in her garden in France. She later stated that "somewhere on a hill facing the sea, there is a very beautiful ancient stone, and it's not going anywhere," describing her rock-husband as "an anchor, something I can identify with." She symbolically chose to wear her father's funeral shroud for the short and unconventional ceremony. This is to be understood as a universal expression of love, and an expression of the soul or the invisible self. Emin has announced numerous times that she no longer has sex and is not invested in physical conquest, but rather, seeks to focus on love and her work.
The Legacy of Tracey Emin
Emin's work as part of the Young British Artists movement placed her firmly within a key legacy that was to affect the development of art in Britain for years to come. Similarly, she holds an international stage, for her work tackles universal ideas through her relationship to human behaviour and gender. Her seminal work My Bed helped redefine what a liberated woman can be. Emin’s work influenced a generation of female artists who explore womanhood and feminism through a self-confessional tone. These include artists such as Marie Jacotey-Voyatzis, whose print works explore her emotional life as a woman and include Emin-like misspellings, and Laure Prouvost, a Turner Prize winner who works with self-revelatory video as well as textiles and found objects to create striking tableaux. Emin has evaded aligning her ideology with a larger political cause, and has stated, "I'm not happy being a feminist. It should all be over by now."
Her work can be understood as belonging to the ethos of third-wave feminism; a belief that a woman can define her sexuality on her own terms. The lack of symbology in Emin's work forces audiences to focus on the real and often taboo aspects of femininity through modern women's issues, such as menstruation, abortion, promiscuity, and the shame associated with these topics. She has carved her own place and continues to produce artwork with her signature strong, yet vulnerable edge.
Emin continues to be active in her art practice, and the basis of her work remains tied to physical identity through corporeal and spiritual anguish. She is an active participant in her artwork, and through this she lends an openness and vulnerability to her audience through universal emotion. She rejects discussion of the feminist authority in her work, and yet she engages directly with modern female identity. Art allows the violation of social norms, and in turn a way for viewers to enter sharing the human social condition - often in a controlled environment.

Do The Celebrities Live Up To Their Goddess Birth Sign?
Christina Ricci Born 12 Feb 1980 Goddess birth sign Hathor
Hathor ladies have the endowment of shape-moving - rethinking themselves for new motivation. Furthermore, there is no finer illustration of this energy showing itself than with Christina Ricci - she has, all things considered, been cited as saying "I positively trust I'm not as yet responding to youngster star inquiries when I arrive at menopause."
Breaking liberated from the peril of being pigeonholed as a kid star (The Addams Family and Casper), Christina discarded her sweetie doll picture and effectively reevaluated herself into a forefront lady in racy jobs. Hence she has pulled in new fan bases with each shape-move.
Her picture, mentality and theory gets an ordinary makeover, yet with Hathor managing her common impulses, she will keep doing as such easily.
Kristin Davis Born 24 Feb 1965 Goddess birth sign Oshun
Goddess of all inclusive love and erotic nature, Oshun ladies are liberal with their time for themselves during a flowing "ebb", and for others during a "stream". We as a whole observed this attribute in real life through Kristin's character Charlotte (Sex And The City), however how evident does the Oshun character ring, all things considered?
Kristin is a special equilibrium of solidarity and guiltlessness - she surrendered to liquor abuse prior to finding the solidarity to manage the requests of Hollywood and confronting it (calm) head-on.
She is immediately guiltless, fluttering her eyelashes and giving a mysterious grin notwithstanding sassiness; and attractive, OK with herself with a 'toning it down would be ideal' way to deal with make up in this manner 'keeping it genuine'.
Sarah Jessica Parker Born March 25, 1965 Goddess birth sign Athena
Conceived pioneers, incredible and fiery, Athena young ladies are feisty and clever. Yet, in some cases they are excessively so and could do with coordinating their mental fortitude towards requesting help.
Sarah Jessica Parker is the exemplary Athena original - solid, free and a hero princess. The drawback to this strength is she'd feel embarrassed to request help on the off chance that it caused her to seem frail.
Nobody will think any less of her on the off chance that she requested opportunity to take care of herself for some time. Indeed, she'd help herself out on the off chance that she approached another person to do it for her! All things considered, even Athena couldn't secure Athens every minute of every day - at times hero princesses need to rest their blade as well!
Michelle Pfeiffer Born 29 April 1958 Goddess birth sign Juno
Juno ladies look for stable connections, material security and an advanced home life. What's more, like it weren't sufficient that she has a compensating private existence with spouse David E Kelley and their embraced youngsters, Michelle Pfeiffer has endeavored to guarantee that she is a settled in piece of our lives as a commonly recognized name also.
On account of her Juno establishing, Michelle had the option to keep up her nobility when gossipy tidbits surfaced of her better half having a toss with Ally McBeal's Calista Flockhart.
As opposed to depending on others for her joy, Michelle drew on her introduction to the world patroness' energy to fortify the relationship from the inside, along these lines guaranteeing a solid nuclear family.
Nicole Kidman Born 20 June 1967 Goddess sign Persephone
Imperative and shrewd, blameless and flighty, Persephone ladies have a stunning limit with respect to self-strengthening. They can capitalize on a spoiled circumstance and turn it around to their advantage.
This is positively the situation with Nicole who grew up slender and abnormal with fair skin inclined to freckling under the savage Australian sun. She got away from her frailties through dramatization and human expressions, where inclusion with Jane Campion drove her to comprehend acting was her future.
Similarly as Persephone wedded the almighty Hades to facilitate her direction, Nicole wedded Hollywood's "the best", Tom Cruise, in spite of a characteristic repugnance for public investigation. She receives an ice-sovereign exterior to veil her fits of anxiety, which she particularly endures on honorary pathway. This is the place where Persephone truly cuts free and lets her quality known by moving uncontrollably in her Solar Plexus, the chakra that Nicole needs to support the most.
Liv Tyler Born 1 July 1977 Goddess birth sign Diana
Incredible and defensive, Diana rules over nature, fruitfulness, youngsters and fortune. Hippy-raised Liv is the indication of Diana's energy with her ethereal looks and nature-cherishing, libertarian way to deal with life.
She is notable for her odd jobs that success worldwide recognition, a laid-back character and prominent beaus... these qualities all come from a profoundly faithful and cherishing relationship with her VIP guardians.
From her first day at school as a plump child with supports to the unavoidable ascent to notoriety, Liv remaining parts reasonable and grounded in the face her VIP. Indeed, even her infrequent raid into an elective style is additional verification of her Diana-enlivened conviction to 'keep it genuine'.
Anna Paquin Born 24 July 1982 Goddess birth sign Pele
Loaded with energetic energy, Pele ladies love being the focal point of consideration and the bubbling energy source everyone crowds around - when they emerge from lethargy, that is.
Anna Paquin was a 10-year-old student when her Oscar-winning part in The Piano shot her to acclaim. That she shrouds her Oscar in her wardrobe out of thought to others means that the discretion and inward force that lies underneath a quiet surface.
She may wear moderate garments to industry capacities, yet periodically she uncovers a brief look at a red hot nature - at the Drama Desk Awards a year ago her Pele side went to the front when she released her ladylike force in a climbed trim provocative dress. Watch this space for her full capacity to come spouting to realization!
Cameron Diaz Born 30 August 1972 Goddess birth sign Hestia
Hestia young ladies are animals of propensity and association, virtue, earnestness, sacredness and security. One just requirements to take a gander at the tight and private relationship she has with toy-kid Justin Timberlake to realize that Cameron values trustworthiness and uprightness profoundly seeing someone.
As per industry insiders, the sweet and blameless Cameron that you see on screen is a brief look at the genuine young lady that is managed by Hestia.
She was a sex-bomb in her initial motion pictures, however is presently better known for her sweet young lady nearby jobs that have become her mark.
As Cameron's inward Hestia esteems a productive home life most importantly, expect to hear information on her venturing across the limit with her man close by...
Susan Sarandon Born 4 October 1946 Goddess birth sign Venus
Venus ladies have a fashion awareness and gratefulness for demonstrations of adoration, delight, and sentiment. In this regard, Susan Sarandon drives the route in reclassifying the picture of a 'honorable Hollywood lady'.
In obvious Venus style, Susan can adjust her affection for the beneficial things in existence with her anxiety that others find the opportunity to encounter it as well - ie, if everybody is glad the Venus lady is cheerful as well. Her dynamic help for issues that influence her kindred Americans (in any event, prompting her capture now and again) and her part as Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF is confirmation of this.
A portion of Susan's film job decisions mirror her Venus center - hot groupie, temptress, Rocky Horror tart, witch, bloodsucker, pious devotee, fun searcher and self-destructive dissident... I can hardly wait to see the following wanton "wild side" this Venus lady decides to investigate.
Demi Moore Born 11 November 1962 Goddess birth sign Bast
Gallant, solid, and brave even with vermin, Bast young ladies show standing tolerance in looking for retribution for bad behaviors. By a wide margin this characteristic is apparent in her miniature swimsuit clad function in Charlie's Angels - who'd need to be at the opposite finish of one of her weapons of retaliation?!
You don't should be a reprobate to feel the sting of Demi's rage. At the point when pundits scrutinized her nakedness in movies, they felt her snakes nibble in her remark; "There's this thought that in the event that you take your garments off, by one way or another you should have free ethics. There's as yet a negative disposition in our general public towards ladies who utilize a strength that is characteristic - their womanliness - in any capacity that may be viewed as enticing."
So look out ;- ) While she is savagely faithful to her kids and sweethearts, she'll rush to show her hooks on the off chance that you misbehave! For more information click here https://5a.org/

Tech House Taco Tuesday with Abco, By Team Awesome
Description: https://www.twitch.tv/abcomusic This stream was live on June 16th, 2020 at 5pm EST. During our study, viewership peaked at 232 and remained steady at around 200 for the majority of the stream. The description and the bots in the chat shared a lot of info about Abco and ways to support her including: some of her merch, her soundcloud page (https://soundcloud.com/abcomusic), her spotify playlist, (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4tGqb8UqquHUQOePHQSf7N?si=ct6lP73ZSTuD2uKxYBlqFA) and an encouragement to reach out to Twitch in order to help Abco get a partnership with Twitch. In this stream, all money raised through tips, subscriptions, gift subscriptions, bits and merch will be donated to the LGBTQ Freedom Fund, a bail fund for incarcerated Black LGBTQ people. Abco will be donating to a different Black-led organization every Tuesday for the next few weeks.
Visual Experience: There was quite a bit happening visually with the stream: Abco was, for the most part, the central focus of the video stream on Twitch and emotes would float across the stream as she played. Video of her would sometimes cut to crazy colorful and geometric graphics that a number of viewers made positive note of. Frank asked Abco whether the visuals were tailored to the stream, and Abco mentioned that she had bought a pack of visual DJ loops and edited the color and shape of some of them, but has been reusing them in multiple streams. For most of the stream, the top left corner displayed chat messages in real-time while the top right was a dog cam and featured their dog laying on the dog bed suspended in a space of cool visuals. Occasionally, when someone would send a “bit emote” or would “cheer,” all paid Twitch-specific features, it would also display across the screen with the viewer’s display name. The very top right header was dedicated to the current time while the top left header displayed Abco’s social media links, all @abcomusic. Her camera angle looked down on her from above, so it allowed us to see her setup and equipment clearly, and it almost felt like being up in the booth with her.
Below the video stream on the Twitch page, there were links to leave a tip, follow Abco on various social media and to buy merch. The chat also had a lot going on visually: most people participated by sharing Twitch emotes. On Twitch, a selection of emotes are free to use, and for this stream, Twitch unlocked their pride emotes, which included heart flag designs for the various identities within the LGBTQ community, including the gay, lesbian, trans and bisexual pride flag emotes. There were also a number of exclusive subscriber-only emotes many users shared, including a rainbow discoball and emotes that looked like Abco’s dogs. Abco’s merchandise and branding is very much centered around her dogs, and it was quirky in an incredible likeable way. She also felt very relatable with her glass of red wine.
Sonic Experience: The stream was largely dedicated to Techno House mixes. Abco played her own original mixes of songs, most of them unrecognizable, save for one which chat participants mentioned used a Duran Duran sample. Other songs incorporated talking tracks. Overall, the music was high-energy dance music that drew influence from 80s synth pop, techno, 90s Eurodance and even R&B. The abco bot dropped links to Abco’s soundcloud where you can listen to her original mixes and well as her Spotify page.
Soundcloud:https://soundcloud.com/abcomusic
Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2VuXsxH
Technology: Unlike in past streams, Abco’s stream had a detailed list of the equipment in her DJ setup as well as the equipment used for the stream itself. The setup included:
Pioneer DJ DDJ 1000 (CDJ controller / mixer)
2x XDJ-1000 MK2 (CDJs)
Audio Technica LP120 (Turntable)
Aiaiai DJ Preset TMA-2 Headphones
Macbook Air 2019
KRK Rokit5 (Speaker)
The equipment they used for streaming included a Powerspec gaming monitor, which Abco used to watch the comments, respond the questions, and thank users for donations / bits, a Canon EOS M200 which recorded the stream, a Logitech stream webcam to stream their dog and themselves on Zoom and the Scarlett 2i2 usb interface. Although the stream was mainly on Twitch, Abco used a number of other streaming platforms to share her work.
Social Experience: Holding the attention of a steady 180+ users, the chat was very active and fast-paced throughout the stream. This stream was very focused on raising money for the LGBTQ freedom fund, a bail fund for black LGBTQ incarcerated people. Because of this, it can be reasoned that the stream viewers were members of the LGBT community or allies. Chat participants were very interested in the music and the genres of music that Abco likes to play. In the middle of a flurry of comments about loving a particular track, one user asked Abco about her favorite genre to play during evening sets. To further enhance the social experience, Abco had a monitor so they could keep track of the chat and responded to the user saying that she likes to play techno house for evening sets, but during the daytime prefers to play piano-heavy 90s house music. People were also generally very respectful, welcoming and helpful to one another. One user noted in the chat that they were a first-timer on Twitch and didn’t know how to send bits, and other users instructed them until they figured it out. When Sarah posted in the chat about being a student and wanting to send out a survey, users were nice about her request and suggested she post in the Discord chat to reach a wider audience.
When Courtney first tried to enter the Zoom room, she had difficulty turning her video on even though her microphone was still working. She entered in and out of the room, and that fixed the issue. Some participants, although they made it clear that they were relatively new to Zoom, offered to help her fix the issue and were really sympathetic to her having a little trouble. She found it very sweet. Oh yeah, the people in the Zoom room were also pretty drunk. At first, Courtney was shy, but she warmed up to them a bit after they started talking about home. We all started comparing drinks and shot glasses, while Courtney remarked about her Nalgene. One woman said she was “cute as f*ck” which was really flattering, and it was probably the best compliment ever. A few people were from Great Britain, so we talked about politics and explained the craziness that happened in our relative places. Our conclusion was, “Politicians are all muppets.”
Abco was connecting into the Zoom room and played the music from her stream into her microphone, so the audio was a little shaky from that perspective. Additionally, Courtney had trouble hearing people speak over her stream. At first, Courtney was kind of peeved by it, but then she realized that she usually has to talk over the music during in-person DJ sets anyway. She started to appreciate the memory of her at events with loud music in the past. Abco tells us in the chat how she can’t keep up with two chats and that’s why she hasn’t been active in the Zoom. Courtney saw how focused Abco was even though they generally give off a cool, relaxed vibe. All of us in the room understood how she was juggling multiple activities at once, and when she addressed us in a friendly way, it felt like we were in the VIP section of a club in a select room.
Frank also spent a few minutes in the Zoom call early on in the stream--although he didn’t turn on his mic or video as he was eating and thought it might be weird. He also found the people in the Zoom room to be very very nice and helpful, yet also funny and playful. When he first shared the link to the Google Doc survey, one user by the name of Fexcab said he would only fill out the survey if Frank shared his instagram handle so he could know what Frank looked like. Another individual in the Zoom room by the name of DJ Smark (who I believe was also a mod in the Twitch stream) would go on to encourage Frank to also share the survey in Abco’s Discord server as it was much bigger. He then gave Frank access to the Discord server. Sarah would end up beating Frank to sharing the survey on the Discord server, though. Users did many fun things including dancing to the music, showing themselves rolling around on roller skates (which Abco would go on to mention on her stream), showing themselves baking, and putting on funny hats. It was Frank’s first experience in a breakout Zoom room where the users turned on their mics to talk to one another.
Outside the Zoom room, the Twitch chat and the stream itself were fairly focused on the dogs--in some ways, the event seemed more focused on the dogs than Abco, at least to Frank. The stream employed the viewership points system that Twitch offers. In this system, viewers are awarded points for watching and engaging in the stream in exchange for certain prizes. In this case, prizes included making the dogcam the center of attention for the stream (4,000 points), getting Abco to give the dogs a treat (2,500 points), and getting Abco to pet the dogs (2,000 points). An interesting pattern in the chat was the strong support for the LGBTQIA+ community that primarily manifested itself in the spamming of pride emotes. This is likely largely due to the fact that Abco said that all of the proceeds from this particular stream would be donated to the LGBTQ Freedom Fund. Abco was certainly a significant catalyst for the chat’s high activity as well. She would regularly answer questions posted in the chat, and even share short anecdotes and opinions regarding topics that were brought up. For instance, at one point she talked about wanting to be a roller skating rink dj when she was younger and at another point she shared how she was drinking wine and asked if anyone else was as well.
Liveness: One aspect of the stream that Sarah felt brought about an aura of liveness was Abco’s interaction with the chat feed. Instead of there being a disconnect in the stream between DJ and viewer, Abco was able to re-create the two-way interaction that you would find in a live performance.
Courtney arrived later to the stream than Sarah and Frank, and she thinks that could have affected her sense of liveness. Although she felt socially engaged in the Zoom room and the chat, she believed her focus on gathering information removed her from the experience of being live this time around. It’s a rookie mistake!
Perhaps one aspect of the stream that especially added to its liveness is the dynamic and multi-layered social atmosphere and audience interaction. In particular, the Zoom room participants talking amongst themselves, and the audience having the ability to alter certain aspects of the stream through Twitch’s point system are experiences inherently tied to the stream’s present that reproductions (such as a recording) would fail to capture.
Individual Research Questions: Looking at Abco’s previous broadcasts, Courtney noticed that she wore a FEMME HOUSE t-shirt, which is an organization that LP Giobbi (a DJ that Courtney also listened to this week) founded to amplify the voices of women and non-binary DJs in the electronic music scene. Abco also played for Mesh Fest this past Saturday, a stream put on by Club Mesh, a female producer/DJ trio that are also closely tied to FEMME HOUSE. Courtney wanted to attend this stream but eventually was not able to. It’s interesting to see the connections in the community, especially when women are uplifting each other rather than putting each other down. This relates to Courtney’s inquiry about DIY culture – these women are giving themselves a voice through their online engagement, and this has allowed their message to reach new audiences.
There weren’t too many connections to Frank’s research questions in this stream: there weren’t any cases of people being rude or trolling in the chat that I noticed, and the music didn’t seem to have a noteworthy connection to the stream’s liveness. I suppose I can mention that that last fact might be noteworthy in itself. This might mean that, for some streams, users might show up because of the music but stay for the social atmosphere. In this particular stream, the Zoom room, the emotes, the dogs, and Abco’s interactions with chat messages and Zoom room participants may have been entertaining enough within themselves to make the music much less of a focus for the stream and audience.
This stream ties to the questions I had about livestreams and community organizing. In this instance, there is a great deal of momentum surrounding the BLM movement, and in the middle of pride month, LGBTQ people and allies are supporting the Black LGBTQ community, including in this stream. Abco pledged to donate all money from tips, subscriptions, bits and merch to a different Black-led organization every Tuesday for the duration of Pride month and this week, it focused on a bail fund for incarcerated Black LGBTQ individuals. Abco’s Tech House Taco Tuesday is one of many streams we have encountered over the last two weeks pledging funds to a Black-led organization, specifically to a bail fund, indicating the widespread support for an end to mass-incarceration and policing.

WrestleMania 35
As of this writing, WrestleMania 36 is set to air in two days, and due to the fallout from the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, will be airing taped from an empty arena a couple weeks prior, and over two nights. I have been advocating for two night ‘Manias since the WWE Network era of PPVs have caused WrestleManias having bloated cards and lasting nearly SEVEN hours when factoring in the pre-show matches. Since it is WrestleMania week, I am here to continue my annual tradition of watching the previous year’s installment on BluRay and break it all down here. I broke up watching the nine-ish hours of BluRay content over a few days, which lead for a more non-overkill experience, and I ended up enjoying the overall show exponentially more this way as you will soon read on. Now even though the BluRay has around nine hours of content on the disc, the cumulative total of content the BluRay unlocked for me was about 12 hours by including a digital copy of not only the PPV, but also a digital only copy of the Hall of Fame ceremony that preceded WrestleMania a couple days prior. For the second straight WrestleMania BluRay, the Hall of Fame is not included on the disc, and is instead replaced with the following night’s RAW in its entirety, which here is just over two hours when taking out all the ad breaks.
The Hall of Fame ceremony this year saw Jerry Lawler replaced as the host with Corey Graves & Renee Young, complete with grimace-caliber jokes of the stereotypical award show variety. The 2019 ceremony also saw a different setup with a ring in the center of the arena where all the speeches were delivered, and while it provided a nice visual, it also made it easier for an overzealous fan to run in and attack cancer and stroke survivor, Bret Hart during his speech. I recall getting the faintest look at the guy before cameras cut away and at first thinking because of the goofy hair that it was Enzo again up to shenanigans a few months after dancing in the front rows of the crowd at Survivor Series, but was then further perplexed to find out minutes later that Enzo and Cass did a worked shoot run-in at the G1 Supercard concurrently taking place. It turned out it was a fan with mental health issues, and obviously WWE cut out the run-in on the final Hall of Fame video cut, and the only thing apparent of something happening is that after a cut to the crowd, Bret Hart’s hair is suddenly tangled up. If you have not witnessed that brazen fan run-in, click or press here for fan-phone footage of proceeding to get pounced by countless wrestlers almost instantly. Bizarre fan attack aside, it was a much brisker ceremony (only three and a half hours!) thanks in part to no Hillbilly Jim speech this year (which was deservingly poked at this year), and a couple inductees not having inductions either, and the ones that did must have had strict time limits because I do not recall an inductor going longer than five minutes. Honkey Tonk Man set the stage with the fun-gimmick from the Rock ‘n Wrestling years, with a groovy entrance and exit, complete by singing his song on the way out and doing a noticeably better performance than Double J the year prior. Torrie Wilson’s speech felt more of a Ted Talk, but still heartwarming and inspirational and I will give her all the benefit of the doubt considering her father and former on-screen talent and Dawn Marie love interest, Al Wilson passed away two days prior. Also pleasant was seeing Stacy Kiebler break her 13-year WWE absence by inducting her.
The legacy class of 2019 had another ten inductees with brief 20-30 second video pieces on each. Most of them are more classic pre-cable TV era wrestlers, but some are more recently noteworthy and remembered like SD Jones, Bruiser Brody and Luna Vachon and in my opinion more deserving of traditional inductions. I hope if WWE keeps this up they will at least have a family member do a separate video induction and include it on their website for a more proper way to remember these legacy stars. The Hart Foundation was the next inductee, with Natalya accepting for her father, The Anvil. Bret and Naddie gave the successful Rock ‘n Wrestling era tag team a fitting induction, filled with classic stories from their days in one of the most successful periods of tag teams in WWE history. Brutus Beefcake gave a surprisingly good speech for his induction, as did the Hulkster for inducting him as he laid out how he broke Brutus into the business. Kind of surprising it happened considering the recent disparaging comments between the two with Brutus’s tell-all biography from a couple years earlier, but maybe it ‘was all a work brother!’ Props to Brutus for giving the Doctors who saved him from his terrible parasailing accident their kudos, and for calling out Shawn Michaels for still owing him for his barbershop window! The Warrior Award went to Sue Ajtheson, a backstage WWE official who is largely responsible for their Make-a-Wish efforts. Dana Warrior and John Cena gave heartfelt, genuine inductions for her, and Sue was a gem enlightening us about her philanthropic accomplishments.
Harlem Heat got inducted next, and after Booker T gave his brother Stevie Ray an outstanding tribute, it was then time for Stevie Ray sharing several stories of the trials of Harlem Heat breaking in before they finally found success in WCW. D-Generation X headlined the Hall of Fame, and as expected it was lengthy with X-Pac, Road Dogg, Billy Gunn, Shawn Michaels and Triple H all giving speeches. They unleashed some vintage DX humor to start off with. Other highlights include giving Chyna her proper acknowledgement, Billy Gunn getting razzed for being with the new competition in AEW, X-Pac getting super jittery in his sea of notes and all of them busting out Super Soakers and dousing their colleagues in the crowd, especially Baron Corbin. Now onto the 16 match WrestleMania 35 card (guys….I am sorry, thank you so much for sticking with me!). If you have yet to watch WrestleMania 35 then before reading this recap, I recommend breaking it up into a two part watch, and give this strong recommendation of preferred matches for each night to make for a better experience that I guarantee you will not struggle to stay awake through: WrestleMania 35 – Day 1 Watch Order: Tony Nese vs Buddy Murphy, WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal, Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar, SmackDown Tag Titles Fatal Four Way, Miz vs. Shane McMahon, Triple H vs. Batista, Elias/John Cena ‘Concert’, Finn Balor vs. Bobby Lashley, Kofi Kingston vs. Daniel Bryan WrestleMania 35 – Day 2 Watch Order: Zack Ryder & Curt Hawkins vs. Revival, Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton, Women’s Tag Titles Fatal Four Way, Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre, Samoa Joe vs. Rey Mysterio, Kurt Angle vs. Baron Corbin, Ronda Rousey vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch Four of those matches were on the pre-show and are included on the BluRay as extras. In a rare move, WWE had the local have a feel good moment with Tony Nese winning the Cruiserweight Title from Buddy Murphy in a nice hybrid of strong style and high-flying that got the crowd hot by the end. In the WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal, Carmella played the surprise last second sneak-in card to eliminate Sarah Logan and win the ‘prestigious’ hip/leg trophy. In a surprising second feel good hometown hero story, Curt Hawkins snapped his 269 match losing streak when him and his fellow bro-ski, Zack Ryder won the RAW tag titles from The Revival when Hawkins got the surprise inside cradle for the electric pop! In the final pre-show match, Braun Strowman won the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal by eliminating celebrity entrants, SNL’s Colin Jost & Michael Che. A lot of hype on RAW built up the SNL stars, but the two hid under the ring until the end of the match in their failed efforts to surprise eliminate Braun.
In the official WrestleMania opener, Seth Rollins won the Universal Title from Brock Lesnar. Their follow-up match at SummerSlam is leagues better, because all there is to this is Brock getting an early attack on Seth and brutalizing him outside the ring for a few minutes, and then only a couple minutes into the actual match Seth low blows Brock and hits a few stomps for the victory. Last few years something about Randy Orton has made his stock rise higher for me. I appreciate his ring IQ and psychology that allows matches to breathe, and Orton’s skills blended perfectly with AJ Styles with some convincing sequences before Styles hit a Phenomenal Forearm for the win. The first of two four way tag title matches occurred next with the Usos, The Bar, Rusev & Shinske Nakamura and Aleistar Black & Ricochet vying for the SmackDown straps. All four teams brought it, and did not appear they were there for an easy payday with the creative spots they unleashed with an innovative tower of doom spot and Cesaro’s countless swings to the crowd’s approval until the Usos hit their double top turnbuckle splash on Sheamus for the W. I loved the buildup for The Miz and Shane McMahon’s Falls Count Anywhere match. Miz gradually won over Shane’s trust all in the name to win his dad’s precious approval, only to then see Shane turn on Miz and attack Miz’s dad! I was not disappointed with how they got Miz’s dad involved in the match with Shane shaming Miz’s dad’s ability to fight. The two had a pretty solid brawl all over the arena that ultimately saw Miz deliver a suplex from the tech area scaffolding onto a crash pad, but saw Shane conveniently laid out barely over Miz to nudge out a three count for the fluke upset. The newly established Women’s tag titles were on the line with Sasha Banks & Bayley defending against the Iconics, Nia Jax & Tamina and Natalya & Beth Phoenix. A lot of controversy was reported on the champs throwing a tantrum backstage hearing they were losing the titles, which happened when Billie Kay stole a pin with a blind tag on Beth Phoenix after she hit a top rope Glam Slam. Minus a handful of moments, Sasha and Bayley’s main roster runs have been beyond disastrous compared to their rise up the ranks in NXT.
‘KofiMania’ emerged when Kofi Kingston vanquished that vile do-gooder, Daniel Bryan to become the first full blooded African American to win the WWE title in its near 60 year history. There were a couple of extended hold sequences in the front half that overstayed their welcome, but the back half amped up big time with some creative reversals, near-falls and clever use of the New Day and Erik Rowan on the outside. I was just as happy as the WWE locker room shown celebrating for Kofi after he hit the Trouble in Paradise to win the championship. He had a killer half year run as champ….until Brock Lesnar waffled him in seven seconds for the gold and Kofi immediately went right back to the midcard in his happy-go-lucky pancake thrower days of yore and acted like his championship run never happened. Samoa Joe finally got his overdue WrestleMania debut match against a recently returned Rey Mysterio. I presumed the two had an epic match lined up, but Rey got hurt the RAW before and was only capable of performing for about a minute before Joe locked in his trademark Kokina Clutch for the submission victory. Roman Reigns was up next in his first singles match coming back after overcoming a second bout of Leukemia for the heartwarming win against Drew McIntyre. I recall dreading the buildup for this because Drew had a variety of ‘you may have conquered cancer…’ type promos and hyped himself up as deadlier than cancer, when naturally everyone knew Roman was going to win, and that is exactly what we got in a formula Roman match. The read in the ardent fan crowd throughout the match was readily apparent, they were no longer booing Roman out of the building like they normally would, because what kind of person can boo a cancer survivor (please do not answer that)? However, there was no overwhelming crowd going wild reaction either, but more of a tempered, altruistic applause instead. That has primarily been Roman’s reception for coming back since, and that is kind of how I feel too.
Elias performed a one man ‘concert’ next complete with other hologram Elias projections playing in conjunction with him until John Cena interrupted. John came out in throwback Dr. Thugganomics form and laid down some rhymes before hitting a F-U to the crowd’s approval. The presumption going in by most was that Undertaker would make his requisite WrestleMania appearance here, but 2019 marked the first time since 2000 that Undertaker did not appear or wrestle in any form on a WrestleMania. Strangely enough, Undertaker did interrupt another Elias performance the next day on RAW. Triple H and Batista squared off in a No Holds Barred brawl next, and I recall being burnt out by this point in the card and nodding off throughout it. Match held up incredibly better on second viewing with the two busting out a wide variety of weaponry in too many gruesome spots to dissect, other than that grotesque nose ring spot that reverberated throughout everyone in the crowd. The finish saw Triple H hitting probably the slickest looking sledgehammer shot ever with some added trajectory by leaping off the stairs, and following it up with the Pedigree for the pin. Kurt Angle hit the end of the line in a few months of ‘farewell tour’ matches against Baron Corbin here. I was worried for Angle as his previous few matches saw him struggling to go through the motions, but a few weeks of added rest benefitted him here with him looking remarkably better and capable of several of his vintage suplexes and throws, and even busting out an impressive moonsault….that missed and lead him walking into an End of Days that netted Corbin the pinfall. Finn Balor faced Bobby Lashley in the penultimate match of the night, and the two delivered a short, but high energy match to help inject some energy into the understandably deflated crown by this point. Balor hit his Coup de Gras for the pin.
The 16th and final match of the night saw the women headline WrestleMania for the first time ever with the Women’s titles for both RAW and SmackDown on the line in a triple threat between Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch. All three laid it in strong style in easily one of the hardest hitting women matches I have ever seen. All three were decorated with battle scars, especially Ronda’s leg! However, one significant botch tarnished the match, and unfortunately it happened right at the finish when Lynch countered Rousey’s Piper’s Pit slam with a crucifix for the pin. Rousey inadvertently popped her shoulder up during the pin, and the ref did not restart his count and continued with the controversial three count. Even the announcers did not turn a blind eye to it and questioned the ref’s call, and it turned out the ref was later fined for blowing the call. I am not going to recap the following night’s RAW, but I did watch it and will give a couple key takeaways since the RAW after WrestleManias are notorious for returns, and unpredictable fan reactions suffering from wrestling burnout. Rollins and Kofi teased a winner takes all title match, but it quickly morphed into a tag match after The Bar interfered to the crowd’s rightful disgust! The controversial Lars Sullivan debuted on the main roster, Sami Zayn returned and turned heel after nearly a year away from double rotator cuff surgery. Dana Brooke and Mojo Rawley both deliver bizarre backstage promos. There was the aforementioned Undertaker attack on Elias and finally Dean Ambrose’s final televised WWE match that did not officially get started because he brawled outside the ring with Bobby Lashley before getting sent through a table. There is one last BluRay bonus that has footage from after RAW went off the air, where Rollins called out Roman and Dean and brought them to the ring for one last curtain call from The Shield.
That puts a wrap on the yearly monstrous WrestleMania recap. Once again I give my heartfelt gratitude for sticking with me the whole way through this. It was a chore to get through the whole show live in one shot, but it definitely helped spacing it over a few days this second time around. Again, if there is any upside with WWE having to switch up their WrestleMania plans with the global pandemic currently happening, it is that them having WrestleMania transpire over two days will make it vastly more watchable, and decrease the burnout of trying to watch wrestling for seven hours straight. Throw in the wild cards of the empty arena and undisclosed filming locations for the gimmick matches, and well….check back with me here next year to see how it all played out.
