a late night thunderstorm and some questions about what never was and what could be.
a/n: i don't even know what came over me, i just needed to jot this down and get it out of my system. i'm so fond of the "reader being in love with original logan and then meeting worst logan" trope. may or may not expand on this soon!

“How well did you know him, exactly?”
You knew the question would come. Truthfully, you're surprised he hasn't asked already. And yet, you're still not prepared to answer.
You pour yourself another glass of wine, hoping for an ounce of liquid confidence to get you through this conversation.
The oven timer begins to beep, nearly inaudible over the roar of the wind and rain that beats down against your windows. He watches you from his seat across the kitchen island. Not in a way that makes you feel pressured to respond - there's patience and understanding in the way he looks at you in the dim lighting of your small kitchen.
Well enough to know he deserved more than this life ever gave him.
You think these words, but keep your mouth shut, pursing your lips. Instead, you turn to the oven behind you and quiet the incessant beeping before sliding your hand into an oven mitt and pulling out the roast chicken and vegetables that you had thrown together.
“You don't have to answer that,” Logan says into the thick silence. “I'm sorry. Let's talk about someth–”
“No, it's okay,” you stop him, bracing yourself on the edge of the counter. You're still turned away from him, but you can feel his stare on your backside. You reach up to a cabinet above you, pulling out two plates before turning back to face him.
“I want to talk about him. Really, I do. It's just been a long time since I have.”
He watches as you divide up the food and slide a full plate across the island to him. You can't help but feel a sense of deja vu - you've cooked for this face before. You've served these crinkled hazel eyes this exact meal before, what feels like a lifetime ago.
But for the person sitting before you, this is a first.
“We were close,” you finally continue after clearing your throat, your voice rising an octave on the word close. “Close enough for me to miss him very much.”
You don’t elaborate any further. You don’t tell him of all the almosts and what ifs that run through your mind at the mere mention of his name.
“Is it difficult for you?” he asks in a hesitant voice. “To look at me and see him? To be near me?”
You don’t answer right away. You grab your plate of food and walk around to the other side of the counter, to join him where he sits. You pull out the barstool next to him and sit so that your body is angled towards him. He puts his fork down, giving you his full attention.
The air in the room suddenly feels heavy. You’re close enough that his leg brushes against the side of yours and a shiver runs down your spine.
“Yes,” you admit in a whisper. “It is difficult. But at the same time, I can’t help but want it.”
You can’t quite bring yourself to say you.
“I felt guilty for it at first,” you continue. He watches you with more understanding than you feel you deserve. “For wanting to be around you, to get to know you,” you clarify. “It felt like I was just looking for him in you, and that wasn’t fair to you.”
He extends a hand to where your own rests on your knee. He covers yours with his and gives it a reassuring squeeze. Your eyes flutter closed at the warmth and familiarity and you selfishly hope that he doesn’t pull away.
“But then I got to know you, and I learned all of the ways that the two of you are similar, but more importantly, I learned all of the ways that you're different. And the differences didn't matter to me. I still wanted to be around you just as much. Even more.”
You take your free hand and place it on top of his. You stare down at where your hands are stacked together, tracing a thick vein from his knuckle to his wrist with the tip of your finger.
“I never told Logan how I felt about him. He and I.. missed our chance to be anything more than what we were. I don't want to make that mistake again.”
He brings his other hand to your face, cupping your jawline in his palm. You can't help but melt into the touch. He tilts your face up, forcing you to meet his gaze.
“You don't have to.”

Mostly remembered for beating screen legends Gloria Swanson and Bette Davis at the Oscars for her performance as ditzy blonde Billie Dawn in Born Yesterday, Judy Holliday was an incredible actress whose charm, vulnerability, and humour impressed Katharine Hepburn so much that Hepburn helped her secure the role of Billie Dawn in the screen adaptation of Born Yesterday by getting her a role in 'Adam's Rib', starring Hepburn and Tracy, when Judy was deemed 'too unknown'. Holliday was also an incredibly smart Jewish leftist, who played the ditzy blonde part again when pulled up by HUAC for 'communist sympathies'. She never named names and managed to avoid getting blacklisted. What a queen. She also had an incredible and unique voice and one of the best smiles in the business.

She was a singer, dancer, comedienne, and Oscar-winning actress (for Born Yesterday), and she had a gorgeous curvy Cinderella vibe that is everything to me. The part of Lina Lamont in Singin' in the Rain was written for her, but after she won her Academy Award the producers realized she was far too big a star for a supporting role, so her friend Jean Hagen did a perfect impression of how Judy would play it, and she got the part!

*Long Sigh*
TL;DR - Why do Tracy (Hailey) and Jesse (Jay) from Chicago PD get so much attention for no reason? What’s the matter with other characters/actors?
Listen guys, I get it. I understand. Y’all love Tracy and Jesse. But come on - one post on Instagram and I see it several times?
It isn’t right that I get more posts about Jesse, Tracy, Jay, Hailey or Upstead (and whatever their ship name is for their actors) in general than for things I actually care about in Chicago PD. I am glad they’re living life and having fun and being friends or whatever they decide but I just don’t understand the hype.
Shipping characters is great. Actors, alright, as long as it’s not pushed onto them or pressuring them in any way. But I mean… where’s the love for everyone else? I rarely see appreciation posts for Elias Koteas (Al), Jon Seda (Antonio), Patrick John Flueger (Adam), Marina Squerciati (Kim), LaRoyce Hawkins (Kevin), Amy Morton (Trudy) or any of the other actors/characters aside from Jason Beghe/Hank Voight. Everything else under the Chicago PD tag is Jay/Hailey stuff…
I guess I’m just thinking it’s not fair that Jay/Hailey get all of this attention when we haven’t even gotten a gif set of the S11 finale with Hank and Al (except when I asked myself and @andgry4 made me a very beautiful one). But I had to ask!!! Everyone just cared about Tracy’s departure from the show and said it wasn’t enough when the whole episode was about her. :/
The show is about Hank and always has been. He’s the main character, period. How does everyone hate him? I love his complex character. Not to mention how much better and complex his character is than anyone in Chicago Fire. (Not bashing the actors, but the characters themselves.)
I personally never cared for Hailey and I understand loving one character a lot, but when Tracy/Jesse post something on Instagram, it’s a big thing? Why? Who cares? And why do I have to see it four times per day with 0 other posts about anything else PD under the Chicago PD tag? (The Instagram post wasn’t even about Chicago PD, they weren’t on set or anything, so why tag it that??)
I guess I’m just wondering what makes them so special over anyone else from the show? :/ It is obnoxious that so many people love them so much and “aren’t watching anymore” or are “finally free” because Tracy and Jesse left. If you didn’t like the show, why watch in the first place? I like Jon Seda, but I only watched one season of La Brea because it got kinda boring to me. I wasn’t “finally free” of it, I just stopped watching - simple as that. If you don’t like the show, quit watching. I don’t care who’s on it. It could be my favorite actor and yet if it wasn’t interesting, I wouldn’t watch it…
It’s incomprehensible to me why they’re so special when they’re not even on the show anymore anyways… I get the fanfics and don’t mind them. But things like this? One post on Instagram that they’re being friends? Crazy how much attention the fandom gives to this instead of anything else Chicago PD related. 🤷‍♀️

Late Night Buck & Tommy Rambles: We Won
I am having all the feelings right now. To start with, I am completely shocked that my timeline prediction was actually correct. I was apparently channeling Tim. So there is a lot to talk about and I'm sure I'm going to miss a lot but let's get into it.
1-3 are the big ones and I'm feeling so good about this couple moving forward.
I've talked about this before but I've predicted them moving away or killing buddie in their promotions and I think we fully saw that this week. There were a bunch of Buck & Eddie scenes + stills. We only got the short sneak peak, which is a lot less than what we could have expected in the past. The official instagram didn't really post any of the buddie stills either but did include BuckTommy.
Ryan's interviews. Not one of them has asked or mentioned Buddie and these are done by journalists that have definitely used that ship to bait in the past. So the fact that after this particular episode they didn't ask one question about Buddie? I really think they blacklisted buddie questions and told them they couldn't ask them. They were very, very specific in several of the interviews to refer to Buck as Eddie's "best friend" as well.
Ryan did get asked one question about Eddie and Buck co-parenting and this was his answer which, to me, seemed to go against the idea that they're co-parenting.

4. We likely won't get a ton of interviews or comments over the next few weeks until production starts but....if they killed buddie in promotions and did a test run of Lou and Oliver interviewing together? That does give us an idea of the path the show is planning to take.
5. Also Tracie posted that behind the scenes photo from the medal ceremony that included Lou on her story and said she was so proud of all of them. So just another example of Lou getting included within the cast.
We're going to get so many good fics this summer and I think next season is going to be very good to us. Thoughts?

Leah. You've never met anyone quite like her before.
Like you, she's new to the force, fresh out of the police academy. It's the first thing you bond over.
In the break room, she gives you a soft smile while she lingers by the kitchen counter, waiting for her instant coffee to finish brewing. The gurgling of the machine fills the brief silence between you.
"It's your first day too, right?" she says after you attempt a "hey" that comes out as nothing but a heavy exhale.
"Yep." It's all you can come up with.
"You seem nervous."
"A little. You know, don't wanna fuck anything up on my first day." Like this conversation. You keep the last part to yourself.
"Don't worry. It took me like three tries to get the buttons straight on this shirt. Jill- Officer Valentine had to help me fix it."
And somehow you're jealous. Leah seems to have no trouble making friends since she's already getting chummy with a STARS member. You'll be relegated to the losers club while she gets to sit at the cool girls table - if there is such a thing.
Most of your colleagues are men. Lieutenant Marvin Branaugh, your direct superior seems nice enough, Chief Brian Irons is a bit off-putting, though. And the STARS members: Officers Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, Brad Vickers, Richard Aiken, Rebecca Chambers - and of course, Captain Wesker, who reminds you of a cartoon villain in the way he carries himself. Most of them are relatively nice to you. Jill has a hardened exterior but a soft heart; Chris is a typical jock and a natural leader; Brad is a bit of a knucklehead; Richard is his slightly smarter counterpart; and Rebecca, who's even younger than you, is an absolute sweetheart. Not to mention, Forest Speyer, Joseph Frost, Enrico Marini, and Barry Burton. You consider putting pictures of them on flashcards with their names on the back so you can learn them all.
Then, there's Leah who has a certain je ne sais quoi that makes her name stick firmly in your mind.
She walks gracefully, steadily in combat boots identical to yours and her blonde hair sways in time with her steps. Her pants fit perfectly, especially around the ass. But you try not to stare - you feel gross doing so when you catch the guys ogling her when she turns her back to them.
You wonder if they stare at you too when you're training in the gym. Lieutenant Branaugh puts an emphasis on staying fit in case the day comes where you need to chase down criminals or dodge gunshots during a shootout. A significant amount of your day is spent doing paperwork.
But for an hour a day, you do push ups and curl ups and pull ups (in that order) to 98.6 FM or a CD if Chris remembers to bring one down with him.
"Chris," you hear Wesker snap at him, "This music is atrocious. Go get a CD, a good one."
And with an exaggerated huff and the sound of metal weights hitting the hard floor, he does as he's told.
"He's kinda hot," Leah says from next to you while she stretches her calves.
"Who? Chris?"
"Yeah," she says, decidedly.
"You can have him. I'm not into meatheads."
"I'd like to see the head of his meat."
"That's disgusting!"
"Are you going to sit there chatting all day?" Marvin asks. "Or are you going to get in the ring?"
You both shut up and stand up.
There's nothing to fight over, but you can be competitive when you want to be. Leah seems intent on impressing Chris who's half-assing his workout both to stick it to Wesker, who is satisfied by his choosing Made In Heaven, and to watch you and Leah duke it out.
Nobody can resist a little girl-on-girl action. Leah has many things over you - her charm, her beauty, her laugh, and her body when she pins you to the mat. It's one, two, three slaps of her palm against the mat to crown you the loser, but she gets distracted, and only you can see the mask slip because you're staring into her eyes when it happens. You want to drown in her ocean blue eyes. Her pupils widen and then her eyes themselves in response, like she's shocked by her own feelings. And then she shakes herself out of it.
You blink and she's standing again, holding out her hand to help you up. And then, like she was never even there, she's gone, rushing in and out of the locker room so quickly that you don't cross paths despite your lockers being two apart. You, on the other hand, take extra time to consider the possibility that you've hallucinated her existence entirely.
But, does it even matter? 
Leah starts showing up in your dreams. She's the intermission between being completely flunking your math exam and missing your flight to Paris (the recurring stress dreams). One night, you're eating lunch in a cafeteria and she sits across from you. The next, you're at a Halloween party and she wears a sexy cop costume, which is not that far off from her real uniform. It's the third time she shows up that you kiss. It doesn't go any further than that because you wake up to your 7:45 alarm.
What the fuck was that? 
You have a book called The Secret Meanings Behind Your Dreams which was a gag gift from a friend. You flip through the pages and find explanations for dreams about falling, teeth falling out, pregnancy, but none about kissing your coworker. You decide it's better not to dwell on it.
You file the thoughts of her under the category of things that you don’t have the qualifications or the time to psychoanalyze. There’s probably some sort of bullshit Freudian explanation but you have crime to fight (aka paperwork to do).
You’re grateful for the distraction when it approaches you in the Main Hall of the RPD. It's almost the end of your shift when Richard approaches you. Out of all the RPD members, you feel like he's the closest thing to a friend you've got here.
"Do you have any plans this Friday?"
"Work, per usual."
"Well, yeah," he half-laughs, "I do too. But, uh, what about after work?"
"After work, nothing."
"Cool. Brad and I were thinking about seeing a movie and maybe getting drinks, and he also invited Leah, so I think she's coming too."
The mention of Leah makes you perk up. You could give or take the whole going out on the town after a long week of work.
Leah, speaking of Leah, you spot her across the hall, chatting and laughing with Brad and Chris.
"Cool," you say, staring right past Richard.
"So, uh, do you wanna come with?"
"Yeah, sure. Sounds good." It's less an acceptance to his invitation and more giving minimal responses.
Richard says some combination of "cool", "okay", and "see you tomorrow". Or something like that. You wouldn't know because you're barely paying attention to him.
You realize it's a double date when Richard puts his arm around you. You're enthralled with Saving Private Ryan. "It should win Best Picture," you remark later. But it doesn’t. But right now, you try to play off the fact that he startled you with an awkward laugh. The theater is too dark for you to tell if he's blushing or not, but his embarrassed "sorry" says he is. But before he moves away from you, you lean into him, and you swear you can hear him sigh in relief. He's nice. This is nice.
But more importantly, you watched Leah do the same with Brad and she's your leader just as Brad is Richard's.
No, for you, she's your muse. She's the goddess that you pray to. 
When they kiss, you follow suit. He tastes like the buttery popcorn you've both devoured, but it's not bad. It could be worse.
It’s forgettable, washed away by the beer you drink at the dive bar two doors down from the theater. 
"Do you wanna take this back to my place?" Richard asks.
"I would but I have to get up early for church" is the first excuse you can come up with.
Richard seems to believe you, which is most likely because he wants to believe this isn't rejection. "Oh! I didn't know you were religious."
"I am, yeah," you say, and hope the rubber chicken test prepared you for the difficult task of keeping a straight face in a moment like this. You think you notice Leah stifling a laugh across the table because she knows.
But her eyes only flit to yours for a second before Brad asks her the same question.
"I actually have a date to church tomorrow morning," she says, smiling at you.
Brad believes her because he's not the brightest bulb in the bunch. Before the awkwardness permeates too far, they leave together.
"So, church on a Saturday, huh?" Leah asks with a knowing smirk.
Finally, you both exhale the giggles you've been holding in together.
"God," you say, putting your head in your hands, though still laughing, "How long do you think it'll take for them to realize?"
"I dunno." She shrugs and sips her beer. "But hopefully sooner rather than later so I don't have to make up an excuse not to go on a second date."
"No second date for you guys? You seemed to be having a good time back in the movie theater."
She shakes her head. "I was until he started kissing me."
"Bad kisser?"
"Awful. Tongue down my throat and all."
"Ew."
"How about you and Richard?"
You shrug. "He's nice. And his tongue was not down my throat."
"That's good." She leans a little closer, like she's going to reveal a secret to you. "But you don't seem like you like him that much."
"I mean, I like him as a friend."
But nothing more. "Well, I should be going," you say, picking up your purse. "It's getting late, and, as you know, I have church."
"No, you don't." She rolls her eyes. "But you do have brunch."
"I do?"
"Yeah, I'll pick you up around 10:15-10:30? Depending on my hangover."
"Sounds perfect."
You and Leah each devour a plate of waffles in a diner voted Raccoon City's #1 Breakfast Destination '97 according to a poster outside.
"Mm," she ponders the taste of her coffee. "Way better than what the RPD has."
"I'm beginning to think they might just be giving us packets of dirt instead of coffee grounds."
"Where else are they going to put all the dirt they dig up outside?"
"It's so goddamn weird that they have a cemetery. It's like they're expecting us to die."
"I feel like I'm already dead. My head is killing me."
"Mine too. I don't even think I had that much to drink."
"Me neither, and thank god - I wouldn't want to end up in bed with Brad."
"You think you would've gone home with him if you were drunker?"
"Maybe. I tend to make stupid decisions when I'm drunk."
But, so do you - one of which includes playing spin the bottle with the RPD's finest.
"We used to play Kings mostly 'cause no one had a table that we could play beer pong on," Brad says when Chris asks him about high school parties back in his hometown.
"We can play Kings if I can find a deck of cards."
"No, we can't, dumbass, unless you have cans hiding in the back of your fridge," says Forest.
"What do you wanna play, Forest? Spin the bottle?" Chris asks sarcastically.
"I thought spin the bottle was a game made up for movies. I didn't know anyone actually played it," Rebecca chimes in from the corner, holding a soda rather than a beer because she 'felt bad drinking underage' even though Chris offered her one.
"You bet your ass people actually play it," Chris says. "How else would you kiss your crush when you're an awkward 15 year old?"
"Truth or dare," she says with a roll of her eyes to say it should be obvious.
"We could play truth or dare," Brad suggests.
"No, we should play spin the bottle," says Forest.
"If you wanna kiss me that bad you can just ask," Chris says.
"Why don't we play both? Then, if the bottle doesn't decide in Forest's favor, he can dare Chris to kiss him," Jill says.
"I'll remember to pick truth in that case."
You play spin the bottle first, which results in Forest giving Richard a peck on the lips, Richard passing it on to Brad, who goes for more than a peck with Jill, and Jill, pulling swiftly away from him, kisses Leah.
And it comes to Leah who lands on you. Of course she does. The first kiss is chaste, but when you take your turn and the bottle lands on her, it barely falls short of passionate.
The bottle is Leah's again and if it were possible to rig this game you might've believed someone had because it points in your direction.
A collective - and juvenile - "ooh" comes from the group. It's the same one you hear from a classroom of 7th graders when a teacher tells a student they need to "speak to them".
Rebecca, clueless, asks, "What?"
"They have to play 7 minutes in heaven."
"What's 7 minutes in heaven?"
"The two people have to go into a separate room for 7 minutes and they can do whatever they want."
Leah looks at you, you look at her. Hesitant, nervous, and curious.
"My bedroom's down the hall," Chris says, pointing towards it. "No snooping, no stealing, and if you break it, you replace it. Got it?"
"Yes, Officer Redfield," you say sarcastically.
Leah stands up, giving Chris an exaggerated eye roll, and you follow her down the hall. You can hear them whispering their predictions and fantasies about what you'll get up to behind closed doors.
But eventually, the games go on in your absence. You remain unaware as you sit on the edge of Chris' unmade bed next to Leah.
It’s just you and Leah Kennedy in Chris Redfield’s bedroom, the world is still and the lights are low, but you watch a decade fly before your eyes in a single moment. It’s fancy dinners and home-cooked meals, an apartment in the city and a house in the suburbs, the balcony, the backyard, the wedding, the honeymoon, the family portrait. 
"So…" you begin, expecting her to set some sort of ground rules, expecting you'll end up conversing for the duration, maybe giving each other a friendly peck on the cheek. But, she looks at you, her eyes flicker as they quickly run up and down your body, and she takes the leap.
Her lips are soft and sweet with cherry-flavored chapstick, and like Katy Perry, you liked kissing a girl. But, there are no boyfriends to mind, and despite being tipsy and technically still playing by the rules of a game, there is something real about the way she kisses you. It's heated and hungry, urgent due to time constraints. You can't stay in this room all night - not because it's Chris', but because no one can know about this. You can't tell them that when her tongue meets yours it's the first time you enjoy the taste of beer. You can't tell them about how she tucks her bangs behind her ear so they don’t obstruct her view of you when she pushes you onto your back and her hands travel from your waist to your bra and stop when Chris opens the door. Leah is quick to sit back up, to pretend, but not quick enough. He knows, but for whatever reason, he keeps his lips sealed.
When you return with your head down to hide your reddened cheeks, Brad says, "You two must've been having a lot of fun in there since you missed the timer on the microwave going off."
"We just talked," Leah says.
"Uh-huh," he says, "Talked."
"You guys were totally getting it on in there," Forest says.
"I would've paid to see that," Brad says.
"You can admit it," Richard says. "We won't judge."
"There's nothing to admit," you say.
Jill throws you a sympathetic save by announcing, "You missed Rebecca having her first kiss."
"It's not that big of a deal," Rebecca says, timidly.
"Are you saying I'm a bad kisser?" Chris asks.
"I didn't say that."
The group decides to transition to truth or dare, and you're relieved to have the attention taken off of you and Leah. The boys become distracted by the sight of Jill's tits when Brad dares her to flash everyone. You decide to leave before you end up naked.
While you wait for a cab outside, Leah turns to you. "Can you keep what happened between us a secret?"
"Yeah, of course."
"Thanks," she says. "You're a great friend."
A friend. You longed to be accepted for so long, but now the word sounds like rejection. The word taunts you while you struggle to fall asleep.
Just friends. The way you told Leah you felt about Richard after you made up an excuse to not go home with him. 
Leah avoids you at work the next week. No one seems to care except Chris, who asks you privately, "What is up with the two of you? You were going at it in my bed last weekend and now you won't get within 20 feet of each other."
"Nothing. We were just drunk on Saturday, so that whole thing happened, and we've just been busy with separate work this week."
"Uh-huh. You were just drunk? Nothing else going on between you two?"
"That's like asking if you and Rebecca have something going on. We just kissed because we were playing a kissing game."
He doesn't press further, though when he turns to walk away, you call after him, "Wait, Chris…"
"Yeah?"
"Don't tell anyone, though. I don't want them making a big deal out of it."
"I won't."
He keeps his word.
Leah used to eat her lunches with you, you'd both meet in the break room at 12:30 sharp, but now, you sit by yourself. Until Friday, 12:20, you find her sitting across from Jill, talking and laughing.
"Alright, I've gotta get back to work," you hear Jill say before she leaves the room. There's only one exit, so she inevitably crosses paths with you. She's the first person to give you a warm, genuine smile that week. It makes you feel human and real, and it gives you the confidence to talk to Leah.
When she spots you, she hurries to pack her things up and leave.
"Leah," you say. "Did I do something wrong?"
"No, of course not."
And you didn't. That's not why she avoids you.
"Then why are you avoiding me?"
"I'm not avoiding you." Her shifty eyes and wavering tone give her away - not that it wasn't already obvious.
"Yes, you are."
She looks around the empty room before lowering her voice, "Fine. If I admit it, will you let it go?"
"How can I 'let it go'? We went from making out on Saturday to-"
"I told you not to talk about it."
"You told me not to tell anyone else."
"Same thing. You're just making it worse."
"How?"
"You're reminding me of it, and I don't want to think about it."
"Why? I thought you liked it."
"I did. I like you."
"I like you too."
Her face softens for a second, going from forced agitation to poorly-hidden bashfulness, but ultimately, she looks disheartened. Because you both know this can't happen.
"I wish it were different."
"You wish I didn't like you back?"
"No, I wish this world was different. I wish Raccoon City was different."
"Me too, but why should we let it stop us?"
She sighs, purses her lips, and turns her head. Finally, after a moment of contemplation, she says, "Okay, but we have to keep it quiet. When we're at work, we're just friends." She pauses and her lips curve into a smile. "And tonight, after work, when I take you out to dinner, we can be something more than friends."
"Deal."
She glances towards the door to make sure you're alone and gives you a grin that's almost conspiratorial before kissing you on the cheek.
"That's against the rules!"
"Oops," she says with a shrug.
You sneak a kiss on her cheek to 'get even' and she walks out of the room with an extra pep in her step. You notice her trip on the laces of her combat boots, too far away to hear you stifle a laugh, but you see her shake her head, feeling embarrassed by her stupid mistake despite being alone in the hall. She's not used to being lost in thought like this, not used to liking someone in this way.
That night, you play a mixtape you and a friend made together back in high school when your only problems were silly crushes on boys. You remember her gushing over a guy you thought was mediocre at best while the sound of Kiss Me amplified her giddiness, and you remember how you comforted her when he broke her heart while Linger covered up the sounds of her crying. 
You wish you could call and gush over your date and have her calm your nerves over the phone, but you know you shouldn’t. You could say you were seeing a boy but a lie like that would violate the rules of girl talk. You decide to keep yourself company. 
You drive separately and meet at the restaurant. It's relatively crowded with the typical hustle and bustle of Friday evening downtown.
You split two dishes and Leah pays. Like you, the waiter seems allured by her.
"Before you leave," he says to Leah in a hushed voice as if you can't hear what he's saying from across the table. "I just wanted to let you know that you're very beautiful."
"Thanks," she mumbles with a half-smile. Polite, but nothing else lies behind it. No desire.
"And," he continues. "I was wondering if you wanted to go out sometime."
"No thanks, I'm unavailable."
"Oh? Where's your boyfriend on this fine Friday night?"
"No boyfriend."
He doesn't quite get it. Not until she reaches for your hand, giving it a squeeze when she takes it in hers. She smiles at you, warm, and then at him, proud.
"Oh, so that's how it is," he says, and you can almost hear the roll of his eyes. "Well, I left my number on the check, so you can call me once you're done 'experimenting'."
Her face turns sour while her eyes remain on him, softening when she meets yours. You walk out hand-in-hand now that you're beyond the point of hiding. Most people pay no mind, thoroughly absorbed in themselves and their dinners.
You take the bottle of wine to go, since you each had only a glass at dinner as neither of you planned to drive home drunk on anything but each other. You're grateful that Leah invites you to share the rest at her apartment since you didn't bother tidying yours. It's better she comes over when the floor of your bedroom is visible, and not covered in a layer of dirty clothes.
Her house is neat and minimalist to a degree that makes you think it's always this way. Her wardrobe, which mainly consists of multi-purpose basics - white t-shirts, blue jeans, and an array of leather jackets - lives on a single-rod stand-alone clothing rack. With her level of organization, she doesn't need to hide all of her things behind a closet door.
You are the only thing she hides. 
But when you enter her bedroom together, she keeps the lights on. She wants to see all of you, to know you. She wants to put your picture in a locket and let you dangle around her neck, swinging like the pendulum of a clock in time with her heartbeat.
You unravel under her touch slowly and then all at once. She kisses you from your lips to your core with meticulous reverence and savors your taste. When you struggle to catch your breath, she holds you like you're bleeding out and your dying words are sacred to her.
Leah teaches you how to return the favor by letting you practice. It is a hands-on lesson. By the time you fall asleep, your lips are wine-dark and barely tired. She holds you close to her heart like a rosary while you sleep soundly.
You roll out of bed stealthily and search her kitchen for breakfast. There isn't much. She seems regimented in most areas of her life and health-conscious. There is a disappointing lack of Lucky Charms cereal in her cupboards. There is a carton of eggs, so you scramble a few for you both. You brew coffee too.
"Something smells good." You hear Leah's voice from the hallway before she appears in the kitchen. She wraps her arms around you, hugging you from behind.
"I took the liberty of making us both breakfast. I hope you don't mind."
"No, of course not. In fact, I could get used to this."
You take a sip of your coffee before you decide, "It's better than the kind they keep in the RPD break room."
"I think anything is."
You try to kiss her and she turns her head. You fear she'll claim the night before was a drunken mistake - it would be the same lie you told to Chris. Obvious in a way that makes it more infuriating than saddening. But she doesn't.
"Mm-mm," she says, shaking her head. "When I said anything is better than the RPD coffee, I didn't mean my morning breath."
"I don't care," you say with a smile and lean in again to kiss her.
She laughs when she playfully pushes you away. "At least let me brush my teeth before you kiss me."
"Fine," you concede and settle for kissing her on the cheek the way you do when no one is looking at work. Even in locker rooms you have to be vigilant. You doubt Jill or Rebecca would say anything unless you were doing something truly salacious. But it isn't unheard of for one of the guys to take a trip through the women's locker room under the guise of "hearing something suspicious" or "accidentally walking in there", sometimes without any excuse at all if it's Irons who has done this on multiple occasions.
Your secret relationship makes you feel like teenagers sneaking around behind their parents' backs. And like teenagers, you both can't wait to grow up and break free of the rules that hold you back from being together. But, you live under the tyranny of societal norms that you can't outgrow on your own.
Not when you have Brad and Richard who find you in the previously-unoccupied hallway.
"It's only a kiss. It's not a big deal."
"Not here."
"No one's going to see us."
But they do.
"I should've known you two were a couple," Brad says.
"Yeah, a couple of dykes," Richard says.
They laugh like bullies on a playground. You thought they would have learned by now. Aren't you supposed to get wiser with age? You're too stunned to say anything for a moment, but you make a conscious effort not to look at Leah. Not yet.
"What's going on over here?" Forest says, peeking around the corner.
"We just discovered there have been two queers hiding among us," Richard says as if he's speaking about foreign spies or ghosts.
"Yeah, they were totally getting it on out here," Brad says.
"Aw, I can't believe I missed the action. Could you give us a little replay?" Forest points at you two like he's the director of a porno.
"Go take your sorry ass to the video rental across the street if you want something to watch," Leah says with unwavering confidence.
Yours wavers. You never got the thick skin they promised you. You put all your strength into holding back tears. Something else burns behind Leah's eyes, though, you can see it. Her icy blue eyes somehow hold fire. 
"Wow, a feisty bitch," Forest says, "or should I say butch?"
All her training led to this moment, but you step out of the ring in fear.
"Sorry I get more pussy than you, Forest," Leah says. She wouldn't normally engage them like this. It's personal. It's you.
"Shit. Pretty good one," says Brad.
"Ugly bitches usually have some brains, so it makes sense," says Forest.
It feels like middle school until it becomes physical. Richard pushes Leah, so she hits him in the nose hard enough to make him bleed. Forest lays his hands on her and likely knowing that she can't take all of them at once, especially when you're standing by in shock rather than fighting beside her like you should be (a thought you only have later), she pulls her gun on him.
Chris, who has won every sharpshooting contest STARS has held since he joined, hears the commotion and runs in with his own gun trained on Leah.
"Put the gun down now," he says.
And terrified, she points it at him.
They both stare each other down for long enough for you to draw yours and fire it because you know if he shoots her, he won't miss. 
You would kill for Leah. 
The bullet hits no one but the picture of Brad on a poster that hangs on various walls of the RPD. Which would be kind of funny if that's what you meant to hit.
Leah turns to you in shock which allows Chris to easily disarm her, knocking her gun out of her hand and kicking it out of her reach. His gun is aimed at you now. He can shoot you and get away with it, and he knows it. His finger hovers over the trigger but something in him holds him back.
"Put the gun on the ground or I will shoot you," he warns you instead.
You put it down and hold your arms above your head. All five of you are placed in separate rooms. There are not enough interrogation rooms to hold you all, nor are there enough cops that are not involved in the situation. Each of you is placed in handcuffs, but you are first. You never thought your handcuffs would end up around your own wrists.
You should be arrested. For once, you are grateful for the way Chris pities you.
"I wasn't going to shoot," is the first thing he says when he walks in. The second is, "you're lucky your aim sucks".
"I really thought you were going to kill her, and I was just scared. I swear, I'm not like that, usually."
"I know. And that's why you're not going to jail." He pauses before adding, "But you're handing in your gun and badge."
Everyone else gets a slap on the wrist. You wonder if it's a literal slap when you see Brad walk out of the interrogation room looking like he's on the verge of tears, but you find out from Leah that the combined interrogation of Chris and Jill will scare you straight.
"Pun intended?" you ask.
"No," she says, but a hint of a smile peeks through.
She tells you that she hates goodbyes before she hugs you. You open your driver's side door and she stops you.
"Wait," she says, and you turn to face her one last time. "Before you go, I wanted to tell you that I… I lo-"
"I know," you say, cutting her off. "Don't say it."
You climb into your car, but before closing the door, you say, "but just so you know, I would've said it back."
The sunset doesn't look as beautiful when you drive off into it alone.

Airelle woke up when a loud muffled moan came from the other side of her wall, where Yasmine’s room was located. “Oh fuck Joe, right there!” Airielle’s eyes widened before she grabbed the pillow that was next to her head and placed it over her face letting out a muffled scream. She sat up in her bed and glared at the wall once she heard the headboard start to knock against the wall. 
“Lucky bitch.” She muttered as she picked her phone up to check the time 6:34 am. She sighed and got out of the bed. “Guess I can go workout.” She said to herself as she quickly got dressed, trying to ignore the sounds of Yasmine and Joe getting down. 
Grabbing her keys, Airielle ran out of the apartment as fast as she could. When she got to the gym, she failed to pay attention to a familiar car in the parking lot. A black Ford F-150. After checking in with the front desk she made her way over to the equipment stopping in her tracks at the sight of familiar tattooed arms lifting weights. 
Airielle’s heart sped up as their eyes locked.  She sent him a small smile and a wave which he returned, before he went back to his workout. She cursed herself as she walked over to the treadmill, if she wasn’t so preoccupied with getting out of the apartment, she would have realized that Josh should've been at the gym. This was his gym, he was the one who told her about it.  
Airielle knew that Josh normally worked out around this time, he dealt with insomnia and had FacTimed her multiple times while he worked out claiming that seeing her face gave him motivation even though she was sleeping while they were on the phone.
Airielle tried her hardest to not look at him, but she could feel his eyes on her as she started her workout. She had thought hard about their relationship and she did miss Josh badly and she wanted to be with him but Tracy was going to have to stay far away from her. Because there was no real reason for Tracy to even lie the way she did, she was apparently in a relationship so why was she trying to ruin Josh and Airielle’s? 
“You still ignoring me?” Airielle choked on her water and turned her head to look at Josh with wide eyes. She hadn’t even heard him walk over to her.  Josh chuckled at the look on her face and reached over to slow down the treadmill before she went and fell on her face. 
“Huh?” She said after her coughing fit, stepping off the treadmill and standing in front of him. 
“I said, are you still ignoring me?” Airielle sighed and shuffled on her feet. She was uncomfortable but she also knew that she needed to talk to him even if it was in the middle of the deserted gym. 
“I wasn't ignoring you Josh, I just needed time to think.” Josh nodded and bit the inside of his cheek. 
“About us?” He asked after a moment of silence to which Airielle nodded. 
“Yes, about us, about your baby momma, about everything.”  Josh nodded again but didn’t say anything. He didn’t know what to say all he knew was that he wanted to be with Airielle and he needed her to know that. He needed her to know that she made him happy and that she was all he could think about. Well tell her that dummy. His inner voice scolded him. 
“Before you tell me your decision, have dinner with me later on.” She opened her mouth to protest but Josh cut her off. “Please, just come over to my place and have dinner with me and we can talk about us. Just don’t break up with me without us having a conversation.” Airielle sighed before she nodded, agreeing to be at his apartment no later than 7 pm. Josh smiled and went to give her a kiss on the cheek before stopping himself. He said goodbye before leaving the gym, the smile still on his face.

 “So you’re going to Josh’s apartment?” Yasmine asked for the 1000th time causing Airielle to sigh and roll her eyes as she finished up the final touches of her make-up. 
“Yes Yas. I’m going over to Josh’s” she paused then added  “For dinner only.” 
“On Valentine's Day?”  Airielle locked eyes with Yasmine in the mirror and arched an eyebrow. 
“Whatchu’ tryna say Yasmine?” Airielle turned around and leaned against her vanity, cocking her head to the side as she waited for Yasmine’s answer. Yasmine held her hands up defensively and let out a little chuckle. 
“Hey. I mean. The old Airielle would’ve blocked him and been moved on by now, but you must really like him.” Yasmine teased. 
Airielle rolled her eyes again and pushed past Yasmine. “Shut up,” Airielle mumbled and Yasmine’s eyes widened before she let out a squeal and started jumping up and down
“You love him!” Airielle stumbled in her heels and she whirled around and faced Yasmine. 
“No I don’t, I didn’t say that. I don’t love him, why would you say that?” Airielle rambled on and the smile started to slowly fade from Yasmine’s face as Airirlle’s breathing increased, almost to a full blown panic attack. 
“Airie chill. Relax. I was only joking.” Yasmine tried to pull Airielle into a hug but Airielle pushed her away. 
“Well, don’t joke like that Yas.” Airielle mumbled, trying her hardest to blink back tears because what Yasmine said was 100% true. She was in love with Josh and she was scared. She had only been in love one time and it ended with her in the hospital with two broken ribs, a broken ankle and a broken nose that needed to be surgically fixed. 
“Oh honey,” Yasmine sighed and pulled Airielle into a hug, despite her fighting. Yasmine rubbed her back as she broke down in her arms. “It’s okay babe. Josh ain’t nothing like Christopher and you know that which is why you gravitate towards him, he treats you way better than Christopher ever did, even before y’all got engaged.”  Yasmine lifted Airielle’s face off of her shoulder and wiped her tears away. “Now go fix your make-up and go get your man.”

Airielle tried to stop shaking as she reached Josh’s front door but her nerves were all over the place. She took a deep breath before knocking on the door, not surprised at how quickly Josh opened it.
“Hey.” Airielle whispered, eyeing his outfit. “You look nice.” She said, smiling when he moved to the side to let her in.

“You do too.” He said back but Airielle wasn’t listening, her eyes moving around the kitchen/dining room area in awe.

“Josh” She whispered, tears threatening to fall from her eyes as she looked at all the balloons and rose petals he had spread out in his apartment. 
“Happy Valentine’s Day Airielle.” He whispered as he came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her. 
His attention to detail was immaculate as he had her favorite… everything. Her favorite wine, her favorite takeout food (she noted as he did a poor job of hiding the containers in the trash) and  her favorite chocolate candy. 
“You didn’t have to do all this.” She whispered, turning around so she could look at him. 
“I know,  I wanted to,” He sighed and grabbed her hand, rubbing his thumb over the back of it.. “I just wanted to show you how much you mean to me. “And I don’t want you to have to deal with that. What T did was wrong as hell and she knows that. You don’t deserve to have my ex come and tell you a bunch of lies and I completely understand if that's you deal breaker Rih.” 
Airielle sighed. Was that a deal breaker for her? And Yas was right if Josh was anybody else she would have cut ties with him and been moved on.. So why couldn’t she?

Other than wanting to wrap Hailey in cotton wool and give her the biggest hug, how are you feeling/what are your thoughts after last nights episode?
This turned into an unofficial review of sorts and it got rather long, so I’ll post it all below the cut for those that want to read my thoughts.
I might be in the minority here, but I really enjoyed the episode. I kinda loved it actually, and it might be one of my favorite episodes. I enjoyed everything about it…the writing, the directing, the acting.
Gwen Sigan wrote the episode, but I gotta give her credit where it’s due because it was pretty damn good in my book. It reminded me a lot of her writing days prior to her becoming show-runner and I miss those days so very much.
I think the tidbits of Hailey’s past are coming way too late, but I still really enjoyed getting to peek into her life a bit more. Just wish we could have gotten more of it along the way and not three episodes before the character is gone.
I loved Kevin’s blatant callout to Hailey in the first minute of the episode of how she’s dealing and if running is helping her. He asks this question of “how are you doing…really doing?” with no words and just one look, and then we’re given the answer by Hailey deflecting and avoiding yet again under the guise of wanting a sugar fix. I think that was brilliant. It conveyed everything you needed to know about Hailey’s mental state in one short moment.
No Voight in the episode was such a gift.
Hailey being in charge and leading this particular case was the right move and she handled it so well. I’m bummed we probably won’t see her leading her own unit someday.
Also back to the no Voight thing just for a moment to say that it’s interesting to see how the dynamic shifted with the team versus him not being around and Hailey being in charge. The team felt lighter to me, like in the sense that they weren’t on edge, walking on eggshells in a way. Everything just felt calmer. There was still an intensity and an urgency to solve the case, but rules were followed, there was no off the book cowboy bullshit, and it felt like everyone followed Hailey and trusted her, whereas with Voight they were obeying orders that were barked out to them. I don’t know. It just felt really different and so very satisfying to me.
I love Kevin and Kim’s ability to communicate with one another with just one look between them. Makes me think of the early days of them being partners and being on patrol. They still work so wonderfully together.
This case was sick. A mother doing that to her own child is demented. Where these writers, and Gwen specifically, come up with these ideas is beyond me, but someone should probably do a wellness check on her. Like girly needs some serious therapy and R&R.
Josephine Petrovic. I had some hesitation with her at first as you usually do with a new character as you try and suss them out, but I’ve gotta say, I like her. I like her and I hate that I like her and I hate that she only just came onto the show because I would love to see what happens with her if she were to stick around, but I can’t watch this show without Tracy or Jesse — mostly Tracy — but neither of them? I just can’t do it. I have some other thoughts on Jo, but I will save them for another ask I received.
I obviously saved the elephant in the room for last…Jay. I really don’t think the mentions and nods to him in this episode were “bad” in any way because it’s stuff that has already been said about the character…Gwen’s version of him at least, but I do think there is a reason why he is being brought up and why there are so many nods to the marriage. Hailey insisted she wasn’t angry with him in the premiere. She signed the divorce papers, sent them off, and that was that and she washed her hands of him. Except she didn’t. Because she is angry, she hasn’t moved on in the year and a half he’s been gone now, signing the papers didn’t give her any closure…hell, even him signing the papers didn’t give her any closure, (I will die on the hill that he only signed them because it’s what he thought she wanted). I personally do not think she will get any closure whatsoever if she doesn’t have a conversation with him, if she doesn’t confront him and all of it head on…the anger and resentment and confusion and the love that is still there. You can’t turn that shit off. You can’t just push it away and be like, “okay, I’m done with you now, goodbye.” Life doesn’t work that way. Emotions don’t work that way. Grief sure as shit doesn’t work that way, and I feel like that is the stage Hailey is stuck in right now. Grieving the loss of Jay and her marriage and stuck in a limbo that she doesn’t know how to navigate on her own while dealing with childhood trauma that she actually isn’t really dealing with at all. And she is without a doubt on her own. That is the one thing that has been made clear this season. She has no family, not any friends other than co-workers, and right now, she doesn’t have Jay. I respect the “independent woman, gonna stand on my own, I don’t need anyone” mindset, but I don’t agree with how we got here and I also don’t fully agree with the notion that she doesn’t need anyone because everyone needs someone. You can’t do life alone. You need someone in your corner, someone by your side, someone who gets you in ways you don’t even know yourself, and for Hailey, that person is and will always be Jay Halstead. I think she will realize she needs to get out of Chicago like her brothers, like Jay, like Will, and I hope that wherever she ends up, Jay is there waiting for her and the two of them can just start over without Chicago and their past looming over them like a dark cloud. And for the love of God, let them both go to therapy…together and separately.
Brenna Malloy directed and it was just…perfect. True cinema if you will. The close-ups of the actors’ faces during certain scenes and how the camera would pan to them at just the exact right moment for a reaction, the no background noise and intentional pauses during scenes that allowed moments to feel heavier and more real, the ending shot of Hailey and her teary eyes…I feel like it was a story that was so delicately handled and crafted by Brenna, and I’m just really impressed.
Tracy Spiridakos. I mean, what more even needs to be said? The woman is a powerhouse. It always amazes me knowing how much of a goof she is on set and then you watch an episode like this and it’s just like…WOW. Her range of emotion and the way she makes you feel every single one of those emotions is truly something that needs to be studied. You cry with her, you smile with her, you laugh with her, but the biggest thing is you feel for her character, and I think that is something that not all actors are capable of doing with an audience. Tracy knocks it out of the park, across the highway, into the next town every time, and her execution is consistent every time as well. No one is doing it like her, and I love and respect the hell out of that woman and her talent.
I think the same also needs to be said for Bojana Novakovic. I have been surprisingly impressed by her and kind of adore her. I’ve really been enjoying the character of Josephine Petrovic and I hate that she’s only coming into the show now right when Tracy is walking out the door because Bojana alone is incredible, but her and Tracy together? It’s like magic to me. Their chemistry as scene partners and the way they bounce off each other is absolutely insane, and then their ability to pull you in and keep you locked in…ooof. I think it’s something special and I’ve really enjoyed seeing them together on-screen.
As for how I feel…
I feel good? Okay? The episode didn’t do much for me in the grand scheme of “what is Hailey gonna do” or “what’s gonna happen” because we already anticipated her leaving Chicago. That wasn’t ever in question. But the actual reason for Hailey leaving is still muddled to me, even more so because she hasn’t resolved anything in her life. She still has these demons, a past filled with trauma she hasn’t found peace with, she has no closure with Jay, she has questions and zero answers, and she is already and literally running from her problems.
So, is she supposed to leave Chicago and start over somewhere and her problems are just gonna go poof? Magically disappear? Because that’s not how that works, and I think that would be yet another injustice to the character and more lazy writing. I do think the episode (finally!) laid the groundwork for Tracy’s exit, but it should have started in episode 1, not 10. Tracy gave them an entire season to wrap up Hailey’s story, and I feel like they wasted so much time and it’s gonna be another rushed exit once the curtain falls. It’s not that I’m surprised in that regard, but I am disappointed (again!) especially considering how much of a fuss Gwen made about “it’s so generous of Tracy to give us a whole season.”
If Gwen’s plan was to make Hailey’s exit about her family and her childhood trauma then the seed should have been planted long before now, and Jay shouldn’t still be a sore subject for her. I think we’re in for a really emotional ending to the season, not just for Hailey, but for the first time since season eight I’m actually looking forward to a finale again.
In conclusion and a very long story short…I loved the episode, but Gwen Sigan is still on my shit list.

A Little Legendborn/Bloodmarked
Top 10 Selwyn Kane Moments
Happy Gemini Season!  What better time to reflect on my favorite chaotic, angsty, and delightfully poetic Cambion.  Sel has given us so many moments that either made us want to ask “Who the F@$K you talking to?”, want to give him an all encompassing full bodied squeeze, or left our jaws on the floor at his assholery or reverent sweetness.  Whatever the case, Selly knows how to make an entrance and leave an impression.  There are so many Selwyn Kane moments that live rent free while hiking up the thermostat in my mind, but here are my top 10.  Hope you enjoy!
10. Weirdo in The Woods 
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.  A wry voice from behind startles me and sends a few birds, hidden in the canopy above, squawking into the sky.  I hadn’t seen anyone approach through the underbrush, but a tall, dark-haired  boy leans casually against the tree as if he’d been there the whole time; arms over his chest and black combat boots crossed at the ankles.”
When I read this scene, I could not believe the level of nerve and confidence this dude had.  The lurking in the darkness was creepy as hell and then he upped the ante by putting his pale paws on Bree!  I thought “Why the fuck is he touching her!?”  I had to reread to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating.  Not only did he have a smart ass, arrogant vibe, but getting handsy to boot?  We would have been rolling around in the woods… and I don’t mean the fun way. 
9. Dripping Wet at The Door
“Half a second after that I’m struck thoughtless-because Sel flings the door open wearing nothing but a deeply annoyed expression and a pair of low-slung jeans.  I can’t help but follow the banded muscles from his abdomen to his chest.  Intricate black and gray tattoos encircle his arms, cover his shoulders, and connect in a Celtic knot on his breastbone.”
This delightful turning point had me squealing with antici…pation.  Tracy’s got some nerve really.  I remember being this age, and having an angsty, beautiful, asshole fling open the door half naked would have been a problem.  This was the point where Sel begins to soften for Bree.  The point where the two of them set off on a journey of personal discovery and develop a deeply intimate bond. They share a moment of realization about their mothers and how parallel that loss runs, about Nick, and about their own relationship.  I loved this moment so much because their masks begin to slip ever so slightly.  Bree being able to recognize the grief in Sel that she had become accustomed to, was beautifully written.  It gave us a bit of depth into his inner chaos and the pain that drives him.
8. The Gala/Kneel
“He admires my hair, taking in the size and shape of it, then his eyes follow the line of my temple to my borrowed earrings, down my neck and shoulders.  ‘You look stunning this evening Briana, it’s the truth,’ he says with a shrug.�� ‘You do.  Even Though you’re distraught’.”  
“I’m not distraught.”
“He leans down so close that his lips brush against my ear when he whispers, ‘Liar’.”
This moment was so delicious. First, the way Sel takes her into his senses is divine.  His attention to detail in everything he does, whether in his detective work or being a silver-tongued devil, encompasses a space.  The act of admiring Bree’s appearance, covering every inch of her face and hair was top notch adoration. The two of them dancing at the gala was playful and intimate. I mean, telling someone you can smell their magic is…next level.  Bree was tuned into his very essence and he responded in kind, whispering LIAR in her ear as his lips brushed the delicate flesh, splaying his hands across her back knowing the heat from them radiated   through her gown.  Admiring all that she was becoming to him. Not to mention turning her around to face Nick while holding her at the hips, and whispering in her ear as he stewed across the room. It wouldn’t be right if he didn’t put a little Selly in it.
“I fight against Arthur’s will, but he will not yield-not on this.  He demands obeisance.  Homage. And deference.  Especially after Davis’ public betrayal.  Thankfully, no one moves.  Then someone does."
"No," I whisper, because I don’t want to hear it.  But when Sel speaks, his voice is strong and clear.
"Y llinach yw’r ddeddf."
"The Line is Law.”
In the Ogof we get another glimpse of what makes Sel tick. The fact that he is so married to the idea of honor and procedure (to a fault) shines in these moments because of what he is constantly willing to do to show his care for Bree. It is telling when he witnesses Bree pull Excalibur and he falls right in step with his duty to his King.  When he is the one to kneel and speak before her, it is because of duty and procedure yes, but his devotion for her leaps off the page.  
7. Mother
“Suddenly, Sel is on his feet. He paces to the end of the room, the back of his hand pressed hard against his mouth like doesn’t trust what could come out of himself.  It takes everything in me to stay seated when he kicks his closet door and the wood splinters into a boot shaped hole.”
On the heels of coming to the door half naked, we begin to see some of Sel’s inner turmoil made real.  Unpacking this a bit, we know Sel has been lied to and we are watching in real time how it hits him.  He is dutiful, procedural, and used to being in control in some respect.  He seems to enjoy the fact that he is needed, deep down, he wants to be wanted, not out of duty, but out of sheer enjoyment of his company, his being.  This revelation about his mother causes his mask to slip.  The hard exterior cracks enough that Bree is able to seep into the jagged edges, and he lets her, if only briefly.  This was such a revealing moment because it is one of many instances that they see not only each other, but also themselves mirrored in one another.
6. Cariad
“I feel Sel’s attention on my cheeks-and wonder when the sparks in his eyes had become a comforting heat…’You are my king now, cariad.’ His voice carries all the intimacy of a caress and his eyes are a melted gold.  I turn away, overwhelmed at the meaning in both.”
I don’t know why I didn’t have sense enough to Google what cariad meant at the time I first read Legendborn.  Perhaps it was because Tracy blew my wig back with the story of Briana Irene, that I needed a moment to collect my thoughts.  This was the point in the story that Selwyn vocalized his feelings for Bree.  It was another peak at the vulnerability he would ever so slightly let come out to play.  And because our Selwyn is precise, his intent (in my opinion) was also.  He has studied Bree, yet she still mystifies him, challenges him.  Calling her cariad, however, was laced with a bit of challenge in and of itself.  He knows she is determined and inquisitive and if she really wanted to know she would do what needed to be done to find out.  We also get that at that moment she was not ready to know, despite her curiosity.  It was just enough of a breadcrumb for her to follow, if SHE chose to.  Also, his sense of duty and willingness to accept her as King even when the order so readily wanted her gone when she did not serve their purpose or fit their shitty standards.  It was such a sweet, quiet moment after all they had been through that left us hanging onto that balcony for dear life. 
5. The Not So Safe, Safe House Bathroom
“Can I tell you a secret, Briana?” His voice slips into the sliver of air between us, silk and heat. “ I like hearing the way people respond to me.  A pause. You in particular.”  
“It’s involuntary.”
“Oh, I know.” His mouth quirks…..Sel’s amusement skips across my cheeks.  “See something you like?”
First of all, telling someone, ANYONE, that you like hearing the way people respond to you is full on iconic, sex demon realness.  Excuse me, sir?  You just walk around doing shit to tie folks up in flustered knots? Kick your combat booted feet up and watch your handiwork?   And you like it?  My kind of fun!  The way Joniece Abbott Pratt (she voices our favesl in the books) reads this scene is so deliciously spicy and devilish.  She put an extra bit of Sazon on it.  It was the closeness for me.  He knew what he was doing (aside from mesmering Bree to oblivion) , caging her between his arms and enveloping her in full on Cambion heat.  It is almost as if the tease is more fun.  Taking off his shirt to pull her in. Catching her gaze in the mirror.  Acting like he can’t put tape on his wounds (because of course a dude who can forge shit out of thin air can’t operate tape!), telling her he likes how her body is responding, asking her if she sees something she likes!  Bree has the resolve of a bug that hangs onto your windshield while you are doing 90 on the freeway. 
4. Sel’s Birthday Surprise (Cariad Part Two)
“Okay.  All right.  His voice is low and soothing.  He takes a slow step closer with an outreached hand, as if waiting for me to bolt.  “This isn’t an interrogation.  I am sorry.  It is your birthday.  And I had questions…but I don’t want you to leave.” His fingers wrap around mine, and he rubs a slow circle across my palm with his thumb."  
 I nod.  “Okay.” 
“Let’s keep this simple?” He smiles softly.  “Tell me what you learned about cariad?”  
Talk about a full circle moment.  For damn near two books, this man has been stewing about cariad and why Bree had not mentioned it again.  After being attacked by Jonas, and Bree begins to speak a bit of Welsh to William, I could almost envision Sel saying “Yeah, you over here practicing with William, but what about that cariad shit though?”  Ok, I know he wouldn’t have said it that way, but sometimes I read with my own voice in my head.  First of all, the planning.  The fact that he discovered a hidden gem in the woods with fireflies no less, and decided to make it a present (not a gift) to honor Bree’s birthday was delightful.  Plus being in the woods seems to be his happy place.   It was full circle in more ways than one because when we meet Sel (in the woods yet again) he is the epitome of ASSHOLE. This scene showed us how far the two of them had come and let us see that he truly values how Bree sees him and how much he wants her to have joy.  It seems like everytime these two are in the woods they have some sort of revelation.  The way he teases kisses on each cheek, then her forehead (third eye) showed us that he was done hiding and wanted her to fully understand the depth of his feelings.  And when she takes the kiss she wants, he responds in kind letting himself have the wish he has been denying himself by Merlin twirling her into the tree bark and KISSING HER DOWN!  Then, not only does he stop himself, but stops to watch the effect he is having on her, while telling her he likes it.  Damn you Selwyn Kane!  
3. Sharing Root With Bree/Most Gifted Merlin in a Generation
“Sel gasps, head thrown back as my aether climbs up his forearms, spiraling around his elbows.  For a moment, it feels like I’m wrapped around him.  His eyes snap open, and then he’s on his feet, bringing his hands together so the flames spread faster.  FWOOOM!  We explode together.”
I was shouting in my car listening to this scene.  Sel had been manacled by Erebus (to Valec’s amusement).  I remember thinking “Ain’t no way they are going out like this!” This was an edge of your seat, shout at the screen, moment.  The way he was in sync with Bree and knew exactly what to do when she shared her root was the boost I needed in that moment.  Sel was back like he never left!  Hair all shiny and shit!  The unspoken communication, the desperation in his eyes when he thought it wasn’t working was equal parts nerve wracking and rage inducing.  Plus, the whole scene was infused with a hint of sexy Cambion tension.  That last line is a double entendre if you ask me.  What better way to explode together than to blow Erebus’ ass back into the opportunistic shadows from whence he came?

“I’m not gonna….”
“Yes, you are!”  The muscles work in his jaw.  His eyes shine-he blinks it away.  “You are.  You just have to hold on a little longer, Bree.  For me–”  His eyes are fixed on my side, a strained grimace on his face.  His hands hover an inch above my flesh.  Aether shimmers in the space between my body and his palms in a thin layer.”
“Don’t move,” he grits out.”
“What are you…”
“I’ve got you.  Stay with me.”
“The floating dullness claims me again, but Sel’s magic is there on the edges, keeping the darkness at bay.”
“Stay with me, Bree.”
On the coattails of the high I felt when Sel and Bree took Erebus out of the game (if only temporarily), was the accompaniment of Sel holding Bree together for three hours when she was nearly killed by demons in the woods.  I tell you, Tracy knows how to make you feel the discomfort and pain of constant loss.  No sooner than I cheered for the two of them, before I knew it I was biting my nails again.  The terror he feels here is palpable.  Nick has just run away from both of them.  He has just done the seemingly impossible and made a root bomb (untrained move) with Bree to stave off Erebus.  Now he is at the threshold of loss yet again.  I can’t imagine having all of that occur in the span of 30 minutes.  Not only that, he creates tiny aether constructs to serve as medical aid for Bree not knowing how long he can maintain it while pushing down the hurt and fear.  Even Valec thought she was not savable.  Thought only to be able to use his aether for violence, it was beautiful to see Sel use his aether to sustain life.  It really hints at how special his abilities are and how much about himself outside of the order’s grip he doesn’t know.  When he says, “I’ve got you” and “Stay with me,” I had to step away from the book for a hot lil minute. 
2. No Other Merlin 
“No other Merlin can protect you like I can, because no other Merlin feels about you the way I do.  I want you to live, because I want you to be happy.  Not because of a spell, but because so very many things would break and go dark if you weren’t in the world.  Myself included.”
Can we talk about how down bad Selly is here?  Like, the boy is threw! I say “Gah damn!” everytime I read and/or listen to these words. He let her know, “Ain’t nobody got you like I got you!”  Something about the most powerful and gifted Merlin of his generation saying he would break and go dark if Bree was not in the world.  Sheesh! It’s the kind of soul-bearing that makes you sit up straight.  Have you rethinking your whole approach to life.  That is a far cry from questioning how she managed to keep ending up in his path.  A far cry from trying to wipe her off the face of the earth!  I love this scene because at this point we are seeing the power and effect of experiencing softness, love, care.  Being touched and him letting the wave of vulnerability settle in.  The willingness to lay himself bare in front of her despite his many fuck ups.  He told her, I want you to be happy even if I am not the one, just as long as you are here.  Tracy certainly wrote him hella mannish! But in all seriousness, this was a bar.  Had that man pouring out his soul in the middle of the woods.
1. Worth This and More 
“Merlin crawls on hands and knees.  ‘Just know Briana Matthews,’ he says, ‘That you are worth this and more.’ Without a second’s hesitation, he pulls me close enough that we nearly kiss-and inhales my power into his body.  Devours it whole.”
This scene hit me right in the gut for so many reasons.  It was the culmination of all that Selwyn had learned, endured, and sacrificed…for Bree.  Despite how much he had risked throughout Bloodmarked, he was still ready and willing to risk even more for her.  Pure veneration and sacrifice just for her.  In the Ogof, he kneeled to Bree and here he crawls to her, spent, and wants her to know that even at this moment he would do it again without question.  The poetry in how he approaches her.  The juxtaposition of kissing her in the woods and losing himself to that moment (even though briefly), giving in to that bit of euphoria and vulnerability, to losing himself as we know him totally, by devouring her root.  Because he knew the cost of that act and did it anyway, nearly did me in!  Tracy wrote the hell out of that and it is one of the chapters I have a hard time going back to.  Something about reaching a point of seemingly no return and pushing forward against all odds because you love the person before you so deeply. 
 No other Merlin indeed.

Maricela's POV
"Abaddon? Seriously?" Dean asks rhetorically, staring angrily at Sam as we walk to the Impala. "Thought you Kentucky Fried that meat suit."
"I did, Dean." Sam counters, his hands raised slightly, trying to resist an argument in public.
"You—Well, then, how did she get it back?" He questioned before thanking the officer who raised the crime tape to let us off the scene. "And why's she playing G. I. Joe?"
Sam answers back, just as annoyed as his brother. "No clue. Why don't you ask her when we find her?"
"Oh, I will. Then I'm gonna chop her freakin' head off—again."
We enter the car, and then it hits me. Abaddon. I swear I've heard that name before.
"Wait—isn't she the Knight of Hell who tried killing you and your grandfather a few months ago?" I ask, making sure we're talking about the same monster.
Dean starts the engine, answering, "Yeah."
"I thought you guys chopped her up and scattered her remains. But you just said Sam burned her vessel. I-I'm confused." I confess, unable to put the pieces together.
Having needed a demon to cure, they had reassembled Abaddon's vessel for the final trial. Before they could use her as a test subject, they stepped away to take a phone call, and when they returned, she had escaped. Having previous knowledge of the Devil's Trap bullet, her unattached hands pried it from her skull so she could get away. She used her freedom to track Crowley down, and when she found him at the abandoned church, she attempted to kill him for the throne. Before she could ruin the trial, Sam doused her meat suit in holy oil and set it ablaze. So, the big question remains: How is she back and in her old vessel?

Darkness fell upon us as we drove towards the bunker. Sam's phone began to chime over the music. Leaning over, he reached into his dress pants to retrieve his phone. Dean and I peeked over, wondering who would be calling at this hour. It was none other than our very own prophet.
Sam puts the call on speaker, greeting, "Hey, Kev. What's up?"
"A lady called Dean's other phone. I answered, but she expected to speak to a Winchester. So instead, she told me to give you a message: She has something you might want." He spoke in a rushed and shaky voice.
"Kevin, wait. Wait. Wait. Slow down." says Sam.
Ignoring, he continues, "She gave me these coordinates—44.053051 by -123.127860— and two names, Irv Franklin and Tracy Bell."
I type the numbers into the notes app on my phone before copying and pasting them into Google.
"Irv's a friend. Don't know Tracy." Dean replies.
"All right, the lady said they were hunters and that if you didn't go save them, that she would kill them."
"Yeah, I've heard that song before." The oldest hunter shakes his head, unamused.
"Dean, who was she?"
"She's the bad guy," he admits. "All right, new job. Dig up everything Men of Letters have on Knights of Hell."
"Knights of Hell?" With some hesitation, Kevin complies, "Sure."
"You find a way to kill one—I mean permanently—drop a dime," Dean mentions.
"Thanks, Kevin," Sam says before ending the call.
I zoom in on the digital map before presenting, "The numbers point to a spot on the outskirts of Eugene, Oregon."
"You know this is a trap, right?" Sam stares at his brother.
"Yep," he answers unfazed.
Scoffing, Sammy asks, "And we're just gonna walk right into it?"
"Guns blazing," he says fearlessly before glancing at his little brother. "You with me?"
Sam chuckles before shifting his gaze on the road ahead. "You know it."
Dean looks into the rearview mirror, locking eyes with me. "What about you, sweetheart, you with me?"
A flutter of familiarity tickled my stomach as I softly smiled back at him. He held my gaze until I answered, "Always."

Before arriving, Dean stopped at a gas station so we could change. As we neared the designated coordinates, my heart quickened its pace. No matter how many times I fought alongside the Winchesters—or alone—my anxiety crept in, going over all the things that could go wrong. When we arrived at the gated part of town, I suppressed the negative thoughts and replaced them with positive ones. However, with the history behind this area, it became difficult to sustain a sense of optimism.
A chain fence had enclosed the abandoned buildings. Sam hopped out of the car and pushed open the sliding gate so the Impala could fit through. After Dean parked, Sam and I walked a few yards into the vacant town. Graffiti painted the stone structures while weeds grew on or around the buildings. A large, rusted sign was posted near the fence, reading: DANGER. HAZARDOUS WASTE AREA. AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.
"The hell happened here?" Dean asked, halting beside me with the army green duffle bag in hand as we stared at the crumbling buildings.
"A local chemical plant sprung a leak years ago. They evacuated three square blocks." I answer, visually searching the windows for any sign of life.
"Guess it's still contaminated," Sam adds.
"Wait, so this whole place is poison?" Dean questions uneasily, turning his attention toward Sam and me.
Replying in unison, we answer, "Yeah."
Dean moves his left hand to shield his nether region, attempting to protect his prized appendage against the toxicity lingering in the air. His eyebrows furrowed, undoubtedly debating if this mission was worth risking his manhood. I stifle a giggle, finding his action both cute and silly. Sam judgingly watches his brother's action, staring him up and down.
"That's not gonna help." He remarks before walking away, leading the venture further into town.
"It doesn't hurt," Dean mutters.
My giggle slips this time, attracting the older Winchester's attention. I nudge his arm before nodding in Sam's direction. "C'mon, big boy."
We walk towards the younger Winchester while taking in our surroundings. Birds caw in the distance, disrupting the vicinity's silence. We begin to pass Ozzy O's Diner when we hear a loud thud come from within. Concomitantly, Sam and I reach for our waistbands and take out our loaded guns. With our firearms raised, we ascend the few concrete stairs. Standing before the door, Sam glances in my direction, giving me a look. A look that silently asked if I was ready, to which I nodded with confidence.
Sam kicks the door open before storming inside with me on his tail. The sun's rays poured into the diner, illuminating its light upon two bound individuals. The man and woman were bound together while pieces of cloth muffled their cries for help. Sam and I step aside as he beckons Dean over. He strides in and makes a beeline for the older man.
"Irv? Hey." Dean's gruff voice fills the quiet diner as Sam shuts the door. He pulls Irv's gag down before asking, "Where's Abaddon?"
"Abaddon's been torturing hunters. She's trying to get intel on you boys." The older man confesses breathlessly.
"Do you know why?" Sam inquires.
"I seriously doubt she wants to add you to her Christmas card list. Now, do you want to make with the rescue or what?"
"Right after you take a shot of holy water, huh?" says Dean.
Sam retrieves his flask from the inner pocket of his jacket and approaches the girl. His fingers unscrewed the cap before tugging the cloth she involuntarily fashioned off as I put my gun away. She opens her lips to welcome the demon test. He fountains the holy water into her mouth and cups her chin to catch any excess water. He steps away, waiting to see if she flinched. Instead, she swallowed without hesitation.
"Happy?" She asks rhetorically, looking between Sam and me.
"Sorry about that," Dean utters.
Irv responds with understanding, "Don't worry about it. Last thing you need is us popping black eyes."
Dean reaches in between the hostages and breaks their restraints.
As the girl stands, I ask, "You're Tracy, right?"
She—and just about anyone else over five foot two—towers over me. Her eyes glimpse over my appearance from head to toe before answering my question with a nod.
"I'm Maricela Coca." I introduced myself before the Jolly Green Giant did.
"And I'm Sam Winchester."
Tracy glances at him like she did with me and responds with noticeable disinterest, saying, "Good for you."
Silence fell upon the room, startled at her curt reply. In that unexpected moment, I instinctively whipped my head towards the source of her disdainful glares. My eyes widened with shock, and my mouth hung open in disbelief. I was left dumbfounded. Did she just talk to you like that?! I shouted at Sammy in my head. He meets my eyes and shakes his head, advising me to let it go. My mouth began to twitch, wanting to say something just as crude. Just as I was going to allow my tactless opinions to emit, Irv began to advocate for her.
"She's new. We did a shifter job in Sacramento together. Smart, but got a mouth on her."
She scoffs but doesn't deny his comment. Dean's deep chuckle immediately catches my ear. Giving in to curiosity, I turned and gave him my full attention. His charmingly crooked smile gleamed in the dimly lit diner. All eyes were on Chuckles as we awaited an explanation for his laughter.
"Sounds like our Mari," He jokes, lightening the mood.
My lips part to say a witty remark, but Sam's snicker stops me. Instead, I roll my eyes and decide to move on. "Let's gear up."
Dean picks up the bag of weapons from the floor and moves it onto the countertop. I leave Sammy's side and walk over to his brother. He begins to splay the reminisce of the bag across the dusty surface. Sam perches on the edge of a table near the window to keep an eye on any demons.
"All right, we got Jesus Juice," Dean places his flask of holy water on the counter before continuing the rundown on the weapons he brought. "Guns loaded with Devil's trap bullets. Shoot a demon, put him on lockdown. The Angel Blade works—"
A distant clatter came from outside the diner, capturing everyone's attention. Sam gets up and moves toward the window. He peeks through the dirty blinds, confirming, "They're coming."
"Good," Dean responds confidently.
"They've got assault rifles," Sam mentions, dampening his brother's enthusiasm.
"Okay, less good," I add.
Dean shifts his focus to the weapons, searching for a plan.
"So, what's the play?" Irv asks.
Dean quickly explains a way to distract the demons. After he finished, I helped sweep the contents back into the duffle before he swung the sack over his shoulder. He nods at Sam, gesturing for him to lead everyone to the rear exit. I maneuver to the front of the group and quietly open the door, searching for demons nearby. After ensuring the coast was clear, I raised my hand and waved. We advance to the edge of the building to survey the area. Nada.
Sam's large hand covers my shoulder, offering me comfort. A reassuring nod is shared between us before we shift our gaze back to Irv and Tracy. Capturing their attention, Sam points to another spot where we could discreetly escape. Following their confirmation, we run like hell and wait for Dean. The distant sound of the diner's front door being forcefully opened echoes through our surroundings. Dean walks around the corner where we hid before telling us the other half of his plan.
"All right. We got to flank seal them douche in there, so, uh, Irv, you and me will go left. Sam, you, Mari, and Tracy go right." He orders.
"Okay. Let's move," says Sam as we walk in our assigned direction.
His hands grab our forearms, making sure we stay close. Suddenly, Tracy spins on her heel and pushes him away, maintaining a safe distance between them by extending her arm.
"Don't touch me." She barks.
Sam's eyes widen, surprised by her outburst. My rage causes me to see red, and before I know it, I push her arm off of Sam and use my strength to shove her body away. Tracy stumbles back, nearly bumping into the dumpster behind her, as I step between her and Sam. Her stunned expression flashed into anger before she charged toward me to attack. Meeting her challenge, I take a step forward, but Dean rushes over to intervene just as Sam pulls my body into his and holds me still.
"Whoa," I shrug from their restraints as I stare down the out-of-line female. Dean's eyes linger on my face before turning to Tracy, asking, "What's the problem?"
Tracy inhales before looking at the youngest Winchester and painfully confessing, "My family's dead because of him."
Taken aback, Sam asks, "What?"
"I watched a demon slaughter my parents, and the whole time, it talked about how it was celebrating. How some dumb kid let Lucifer out of his cage."
Tracy glared at Sam with intense hatred after she recounted her story. Although she had acted like an ass, I really couldn't blame her. My eyes shifted toward Sam, only to have my heart break even more as I witnessed grief consume both his mind and body. Before I could move to console him, Dean interjected.
"Okay, all right, we got to move. Uh, girls with me. Irv." He pats Sam on the chest, finishing his sentence with his gesture.
"Okay. Let's go, son." The older man tells Sam.
Sammy lingers behind me, staring sorrowfully at Tracy.
"He's going to be okay," Dean whispers in my ear after his brother follows Irv.
I nod in agreement and try to refrain from thinking of how much Sam was beating himself up. Dean marches away to play line leader as we trail behind. With our guns off safety, we cautiously move along the surrounding buildings. After rounding our last corner, the view of the diner was straight ahead. Dean peeks at the restaurant's entrance before giving further instructions.
"Okay, I think they're still inside. We wait till they come out, and we pick them off one by one." He gives us the side-eye before seizing the opportunity to address the new girl's animosity toward Sam. "Listen, for the record, Sam's not the only guy who thought he was doing right and watched it all go to crap. Okay? That's just part of being—"
"Being a hunter." Tracy finished with acerbity, not understanding the mini-lecture.
"Being human. Look, you want to be pissed off at Sam, that's fine. I get it. But if you want to go after somebody, you make sure that they got black eyes. Got to know who the real monsters are in this world, kid."
She remained silent after he finished his speech, allowing his words to marinate. The quietness was short-lived as gunfire erupted in the distance. On instinct, we raised our guns high and low, scouting every inch the barrel of our guns could see. After the shooting stopped, Dean silently motioned to move forward. Suddenly, Abaddon jumps out of her hiding place and clotheslines Dean, knocking him flat on his back.
My body wanted to run to his aid, but my brain told me to fight. I aim my handgun at Abaddon's head, but before I can pull the trigger, she telekinetically flicks it away. My hand instinctively reaches into my jacket, attempting to retrieve the angel blade I keep stashed away. The pads of my fingertips barely grazed the handle when she waved her hand, sending me into a brick wall. I heard Dean's voice call my name before everything faded to black.
Dean's POV
"Mari!" I call as she flies into the building beside her.
Her head hits the aged bricks, knocking her out cold. Before I could get to her, Tracy fired an entire round into the Knight of Hell. I swiftly move from the path of danger, instinctively protecting my face by covering it with my arms. Once the clip was empty, my eyes instantly scanned Mari's body, checking to see if she was free of any ricochet. Thankfully—other than the injury that she-demon caused—she was okay.
"Nice grouping." Abaddon mocks, lifting her black shirt to reveal her bulletproof vest. "Kelvar. Beats magic bullets. I love the future."
While the demon was distracted, I stealthily grabbed my flask from my jacket. I silently unscrewed the cap before flinging the holy water at the Knight of Hell. She gasped in pain as the purified water burned her vessel. As she stumbled away, I rushed to my feet and reached into my jeans pocket for my keys. After fishing them out, I grasp Tracy's hand and place the keys in it.
"Listen, my car is three blocks over. Go get more bullets, more holy water—get everything."
"No, no, b-but what about you guys?" She stutters.
I push her away, yelling, "Just go! Go! Now!"
Tracy listens to my order and runs away. Immediately, I fall to my knees next to Maricela before scooping her delicate frame up from the dusty ground. Carefully, I release her from my embrace, settling her against the wall. I cast a glance at Abaddon and see her recovering from holy water. Gentle but urgently, I shake her shoulder and leg simultaneously, attempting to wake the Sleeping Beauty. When she doesn't move, my hands anxiously cradle her wounded head. Blood seeped from her hair, running along her temple and onto my hand, painting it red.
"Come on, princess," I beg, worry filling every cell in my body. "Wake up."
Not having enough time to check for a pulse, I force myself away from her, fearing the worst. Protectively, I stand tall in front of Mari and face Abaddon. She brushes her hair out of her face and smiles wickedly. Her red lipstick mirrored the anger that was boiling inside me. My muscles ached with pain as I waited for the right moment to wipe the smirk off of her face.
She briefly glances at Maricela before returning her gaze to me. "Alone at last."

Hiding in plain sight? Is this dumb as dirt article about Tyler's allegedly big party proof that there was no party? The other day there was a thread with many commenting on how weird it was there are no photos of Tyler's party other than the one of Harry and Meghan and Gail King and Oprah. I decided to do my own search and nothing. So I read a number of articles and all the articles are basically reprints, all have the same talking points.The article below from Tatler (imo it was a press release from Monteceito) sounds like it was written by a 12 year old. Besides how poorly its written the several main points in the article raise doubts for me that there was a big bash.According to the Tatler article (as mentioned all articles cite the same points) a worker from a nearby lighting company, which had been hired to help decorate Perry's mansion for the party said:"There was ‘a lot of music, dancing and singing,... ‘Lots of speeches and food too. Everyone was having a lot of fun. It was a good party. There were a lot of famous people but I cannot say any more,’ he told MailOnline."If Perry wanted everything hush hush and told hired help to not say anything about who he invited why were Oprah, King, Harry, Meghan, Brian and Tracy Robbins named? Furthermore what person below 80 says things like "there were a lot of famous people there", "everybody was having fun" and "there was a lot of singing and dancing" Who talks that way these days?2) Another oddity and I quote*"Another source also mentioned that a ‘*male person who sounded like Harry was heard making a speech’ at one point during the evening."Who is this source? Why did that unnamed source divulge the name of a guest when the other person apparently was under orders not to name names? How convenient that of all people who were named it was Harry! And how interesting that amidst that big crowd of famous people someone could hear but apparently not see Harry giving a speech. Am I the only one who thinks that ‘a male person who sounded like Harry was heard making a speech’ sounds suspiciously made up? How is that of all the famous people who were there only he got mentioned?Along with the lack of photos of other guests, I personally don't believe there was a big party. Carmen Sevilla (La fierecilla domada/La mégère apprivoisée, La Venganza, King of Kings)— One of the few spanish actresses to really make it in Hollywood. She worked opposite Charlton Heston in the 1970s and reportedly slapped him but that is past the cut-off so you can look it up for yourselves. There's also rumors that Frank Sinatra had a bit of a crush on her and asked her out a couple of times but she rejected him. The woman was just messy as hell in general and an absolute icon. Bless.

Mostly remembered for beating screen legends Gloria Swanson and Bette Davis at the Oscars for her performance as ditzy blonde Billie Dawn in Born Yesterday, Judy Holliday was an incredible actress whose charm, vulnerability, and humour impressed Katharine Hepburn so much that Hepburn helped her secure the role of Billie Dawn in the screen adaptation of Born Yesterday by getting her a role in 'Adam's Rib', starring Hepburn and Tracy, when Judy was deemed 'too unknown'. Holliday was also an incredibly smart Jewish leftist, who played the ditzy blonde part again when pulled up by HUAC for 'communist sympathies'. She never named names and managed to avoid getting blacklisted. What a queen. She also had an incredible and unique voice and one of the best smiles in the business.

She was a singer, dancer, comedienne, and Oscar-winning actress (for Born Yesterday), and she had a gorgeous curvy Cinderella vibe that is everything to me. The part of Lina Lamont in Singin' in the Rain was written for her, but after she won her Academy Award the producers realized she was far too big a star for a supporting role, so her friend Jean Hagen did a perfect impression of how Judy would play it, and she got the part!

i. a bird in a cage
have you ever thought about the prospect of pricking your finger on a thorn of a deep, deep red rose, only for poison to spread across your body? have you felt that raw pain, simultaneously sharp and dull, so deep that it cuts your soul? it’s such a pitiful, beautiful prospect - so much so it sends euphoric shivers through your spine.
“i love you, morningstar.” a prim yet faux smile pulls on your lips as you grip the glass vase in your hand. through its fragile surface one can see the thorn-lathered roses: a blatant symbol of love. “more than you know - and more than i know, too. i love you from the bottom of my heart. will you take these flowers?”
morningstar is looking up at the sky: a navy blanket with flickering silver specks and the moon smiling wickedly as a crescent. it’s not unlike the smile the man wore now. while you can’t see his eyes through that ominous black mask, you know they are striking gold, like the sun.
he doesn’t accept your flowers, instead grabbing your wrist and pulling you in. his claws are like the thorns of roses in and of themselves, pricking into your (s/c) skin and drawing a little bit of blood. he then pulls you in, wrapping his arm around your waist.
“oh, my sweet little marionette, i must say you’ve gotten better at choosing your words. will you appease the masses with those lips of yours now?” he places an index finger on your lips for a fleeting moment before he steps back, arms releasing their oppressing hold from your waist. naturally, you step away, keeping one of your hands intertwined with his.
you start dancing with him, albeit against your will. you can only go with the other’s whims.
over time, you have come to realize that this man before you, while he looks almost like a god with that silver braided hair of his, that black mask that complemented his black attire and red cape, his character is twisted: apathetic to everything but that which he loathes, even words that were coated in sweet honey is laced with an icy undertone of indifference.
you find that fascinating about him, just as much as you find it frustrating.
“how do you know if my words are empty or not?”
he lets out a hum in thought, but as he lifts your arm to twirl you around, he chuckles. though it gives you mixed feelings to admit it, his voice makes your heart beat faster like being spiked with an electric shock.
“because you and i are not so different,” he finally replies following several moments of silence that feels as thick as molasses. “look at you now, being able to manipulate words like the back of your hand.” his voice is mocking - lathered with a sweet poison that you still have not grown immune to.
he spins you around once again, and when he steps to the right, you take a step to the left.
you two are always on opposite sides. it’s almost like you are always staring at a reflection of yourself: a version of what you could have ended up.
“you’ve fallen too far, like myself.”
“yet, we are different,” you reply, “unlike me, you are not ashamed of it at all, and that irritates me.” when he pulls you in again, you take this opportunity to reach for the dagger sheathe on his belt with your free hand. your movements are swift, having been trained by miss reznik before. everything happens in one motion: the unsheathing of the silver blade that ominously gleams in the night, followed by the sharp blade pressed dangerously close to the other’s throat. “so much that it makes me want to see your blood spill the floor.”
despite a knife being pressed to his throat this very moment, morningstar’s smile never fades. in fact, it seems to widen, as if this whole ordeal and being on the brink of death amuses him.
or perhaps he is just overconfident; dare you say that sounds like him as well.
“unlike you,” you continue, “i don’t drag out what doesn’t need to be dragged out.”
“yet your hand is trembling.” morningstar’s fingertips graze your hand. when you follow the slow, almost lethargic motion with your eyes, you see that like he had said, your hand is trembling.
it isn’t very noticeable, but given you two’s proximity, it’s probably more obvious.
“i…”
morningstar leans in, whispering in your ear. “let this ‘venerable one’ teach you what it’s really like to have the resolve to kill someone.”
in the blink of an eye, in a hauntingly quick yet graceful motion, he snatches his large halberd, adorned with a single lantern that emits a faint flickering glow like the stars above, and swings at you. he aims away from your heart - you aren’t sure if that’s on purpose or not, but you don’t want to think about it either with the imminent danger before you - but he still slashes from your shoulder down to the center of your chest.
the pain doesn’t even hit you immediately, as you are still recovering from shock.
that is just how quick morningstar is.
you try to hold back a whimper as your shock slowly subsides, replaced by the pain of the wound inflicted by the “god”-like human before you, but you can’t stop it from escaping your lips. eventually, your knees buckle, and you fall to your knees, probably scraping them on the hard stone floor. when you look down at your own clothes, you see the dark stains soaking your clothes.
with a lighthearted laugh, morningstar leans down so he’s at the same eye level as you. “you’ve fallen too low to come back up to the light, yet you still have such a long way to go. do you see now just how pitiful you are?” he cups his hands on your cheeks as though he cares for you, his smile turning deceptively gentle. “all you can do right now is stay by my side like a marionette.”
those words sink in your chest, making it difficult to breathe. he reaches into his pocket to pull out a ring. the jewel adorning it is a bright red, akin to roses bathing in the sunlight.
a beautiful cage for a bird whose wings can no longer fly.
with a soft sigh, you lift your right hand, letting it fall limp as morningstar slides it on your ring finger.
ii. bloody kisses
through the silent night is the sound of hacking.
at first, you aren’t completely sure who it is that’s coughing so unceremoniously, desperately clinging onto whatever little life they have left. eventually, though, you come to a realization: a terrifying one, yet one that simultaneously calms the stormy waves raging within the vestiges of your unsettled heart.
that voice belongs to you. you know because the salty tang of blood starts to force its way up past your throat.
“you look so vile right now that it’s beautiful, my dear marionette.”
pain spreads all over your body, fluctuating between dull throbs and sharp pangs that nearly bring you to the verge of tears as you move around. you can’t speak, not in your current condition, but hearing a voice and feeling a presence next to you provides a much-needed distraction.
even if said voice and presence is someone you loathe in your heart.
though all words are stuck in your throat by the clogged blood threatening to spill from your lips, and your breathing becomes even more ragged by the moment, your eyes meet with those golden ones, reminiscent of the sun - morningstar.
you try glaring at him, but he only smiles back, his eyes narrowing.
“surrounded by roses” - the smell reminds you of a sickeningly sweet perfume - “and beneath the night of the full moon” - he tilts his head, his lips stretching into a smirk that isn’t necessarily mocking you, but still drips with his narcissistic nature - “how long i’ve dreamed of this day.”
for a moment, you hold his stare, but then you close your eyes.
if i stare at him any longer, i’ll have to deal with both blood and bile.
you don’t like how he calls you “marionette” - a doll meant to be controlled - but at the same time you can’t help but feel drawn to the way he talks. it’s almost endearing in a way, and if you didn’t know any better, you would have thought he actually cares for you from his heart.
but this is morningstar: he has already fallen too low, even while sitting upon a gilded throne on top of a “glorious” tower. you honestly don’t think he’s capable of such feelings anymore.
as you try to cough out some more blood that’s clogging in your throat, you hear him chuckle as he sits before you on his knees so you are at the same eye level. he plucks a nearby rose by its stem and plucks its petals, one by one. “i was waiting for the day you’d rebel against me, so i could see you like this.”
he stops plucking in the middle, instead putting the rose in the locks of your hair. those pale, slender fingers of his brushes along your cheek as they do, grazing it with a small cut with how sharp his claws are.
you open your mouth: while you can’t speak out loud, you can at least mouth some words in response.
to your surprise, though, morningstar places an index finger gently over your lips. he leans down so you can feel some strands of his braided platinum hair tickle your cheeks and coos, “shh, marionettes shouldn’t speak out.”
your eyes widen as he leans down even more, his lips nearing yours. your lips waver as your body remains petrified before his god-like presence.
like a drum, your heart beats faster and faster, filling your ears to the point it drowns out all other sounds.
time slows down, nearly stopping completely in place. going through the flow of time feels like walking through molasses. it slows more and more... until his lips brush on yours.
at first, it’s light kisses that don’t go beyond feather-like pecks that you can barely feel. it’s like he’s teasing you, hoping to make you beg for more.
perhaps he wants to see me cry too.
much to your chagrin, though, it seems crying is a natural reaction to him kissing you. you aren’t sure if it’s because you’re disgusted or overwhelmed with some other emotion you can’t really name.
“as i thought, tears suit you the most.” his fingers cup your cheeks before your lips meet once again.
unlike the first time, this kiss is deeper - it feels as though he is drowning you in a sick sense of euphoria that you can’t help but want more of.
it’s a feeling akin to being spiked with a drug that blurs your thoughts with pleasure, destroying and burying any rationality six feet under.
you can’t think - only overwhelming feelings drown your senses, numbing them and overflowing them at the same time.
it makes your body tremble, and you squeeze your eyes shut in an attempt to contain your feelings that you can’t put into words until he lets go.
you open your eyes, and though your vision is blurred by tears, you can still make out morningstar’s figure: his hair that resembles the moonlight, that black attire with a dark red cape, his striking golden eyes and... slightly blood-stained lips.
for a moment you can’t think of anything - your mind is empty after having been kissed so deeply like that, by morningstar no less. You can only stare at him blankly with your mind in a euphoric daze, not bothering to blink out the tears stuck in your eyes.
his hands withdraw from your cheek, moving to his own lips as he smiles, licking the blood staining his lips from having kissed you.
“you are most beautiful like this.”
his words bring you out of your daze, and with shaking hands and sweat tracing the side of your face, you reach for your ring finger, where a sickeningly familiar crimson ring is bound snugly around.
a breath later, you pull it out and throw it to the ground, watching as all the crimson colors blur together to a puddle of sins.
morningstar seems nothing less than amused, though, for he knows the truth.
at this point, you’ve both fallen too far.

WIP Wednesday
A very silly thing based on a silly idea I had about how the Tracys might approach food which has already caused two people to declare they felt physically unwell at the thought of it…
He’s an active boy and needs the calories… honest…

“Howdie and welcome to Top Friez! What can I get y’all?”
“May I have a Tomcat fries but no pickles please? Oh, and an F-14 lemonade?”
“Sure, darlin’. And for yooou…oooh… uh… hi!”
‘Another one bites the dust’ Estera noted to herself and pressed her tongue hard against the back of her teeth in an effort not to laugh out loud at the poor woman. Scott, as ever, gave the appearance of not having noticed the waiting staff dissolving into jelly in front of him.
“I’ll get a Darkstar Shake, and a Maverick’s Madness with everything, please.”
The waitress paused, her finger hovering above the tablet.
“E-everything?”
“Everything.” Scott insisted with a cheeky smile and the waitress collapsed into giggles.
“Wow I don’t think there’s a button for that! You might need to give me a minute to tick all the boxes…”
“Take as much time as you need.”
The waitress started tapping frantically and Estera paused mid-eyeroll to double-check the full list of toppings.
“Scott you cannot have EVERYTHING… there must be at least 12 different sauce options alone not to mention all these cheeses and…”
“I’ve considered the options and made my choice.”
“But… bbq pulled pork, beef brisket AND shredded Asian chicken? Together?!”
“Yep.”
“AND BACON?”
“Oh, good point” He touched the waitress lightly on the elbow and apologised when she leapt into the air: “I’m so sorry, could I get extra bacon please.”
The waitress kept an admirably straight face as she scrolled back to make a note.
“Surely not 4 variants of slaw, Scott… that’s… they’ll clash…”
“Complement.”
“Curdle more like. Oh and they’re going to go so very very nasty with the gravy.”
“Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.”
“I’m pretty sure I won’t get a chance and nor will you because you’ll be arrested for crimes against gastronomy any minute now.”
“Welcome to the Land of the Free, my friend” Scott responded with a grand sweep of an arm “There are no such crimes here.”

I just watched the Lackadaisy pilot and my god it's gorgeous! The animation is beautiful and I love the character design! (See Viv? You CAN make a scene in a club that's mostly red without making me bleed from the eyes)
But I would like to add I really love the restraint of it compared to HH and HB. When Ivy is trying to start the car again she exclaims in frustration and gets out to try to fix it. Dropping a curse word here would make sense. Ivy and her buddies are being chased with guns, they just crashed their car and are losing their liquor. Even her going "DANG IT!" would work.
But she says "Raspberries!". Raspberries. It's not like the Lackadaisy crew has executives demading they keep it clean for kids. They just decided to keep the dialog like that because it adds to her character. Ivy's the type of perky adventurous girl that would say that in this situation.
Then you have Vivz characters who all speak the same. They all curse a lot, they all make the same dick and sex jokes (not even just the lust demons. EVERYONE does this), they all have the same "haha i'm wacky and very raunchy because I'm a powerful demon! Look at my smug smirk >:) i don't give a fuck but also I'm not a bad person, I just like being silly and I have feelings too uwu". Apart from their jobs and placement in hell and it's rings, the characters feel the same because of this.
The Lackadaisy dialog I mentioned is something that goes by really quick but it's a detail that stuck with me. It shows that they really grasp what these characters are like (probably thanks to the comics). Viv just knows what fancy design she wants the next character to have but in terms of what will set them apart it's default "this character is loud and vulgar". Girl, every character is like that. It's no longer a novelty, it's formulaic.
Agreed; the difference is night and day. It's not that the characters in Lackadaisy aren't allowed to swear or that Tracy's trying to keep it G-rated -- it's that she puts a lot of thought into which characters swear, when they swear, and how they swear. She also just really likes old-timey language, and it shows in everything from the show's title to the expletives.
When a character in HH/HB has a filthy mouth, it tells us nothing about them, because they all talk like that. Vivzie has about 29 characters with four personalities.
