My roommate's girlfriend (buzzed) and my roommate (blitzed) woke up to cats yowling in the alley last night right around the time I got home, and in a convincing display of her assertion that it's not CERTAIN we're getting a new cat soon (we are) my roommate asked if I wanted to go outside (it was midnight) and help them catch the one that seemed like maybe it was new to being outside. So I grabbed the carrier I've kept by the door in case our last project (Pete the tuxedo) came back (chewed a hole in the window screen and ran) and followed my roommate outside where her gf was lying on the ground with a tin of wet food trying to coax the cat from under the dumpster (nowhere near garbage day) and meowing (comfortingly?).
We ended up walk-chasing the cat down the street and Carolyn (roommate) actually got hands on her at one point, but the cat escaped (she didn't remember to zip the top of the carrier after she put the cat in) (this was when I realized she was drunk af and not just sleepy) so we spent another 20 minutes crawling around with phone flashlights on (still midnight) and eventually had to give up.
As we were walking back to the apartment (half a block away) I rolled a high enough perception check (permanent disadvantage due to adhd) to see that there was a man sitting nearly motionless in his SUV with all the lights off, lit only by the blue glow of his dash controls.
I said (quietly) "there's a whole-ass man who's been sitting in his car right here this entire time."
The other two (limbs a drunk and sweaty pretzel) processed this for a moment and giggled together. "oh well," said Julia (the toothpick keeping this thing together). "this is Chicago. He's seen weirder."
"oh for sure," I said, picking off leaf litter stuck to my elbow (humid). "I mean I feel like three lesbians chasing pussy at midnight is pretty normal around here anyway."
A (drunk) pause, then laughter so loud that something streaked from the bushes (cat) bolted across the road, and disappeared under a fence (welp).
#Mundane adventures#At least we got her away from the black and white cat#He kept trying to instigate a fight and she just kept hunkering refusing or not understanding#We lost sight of that gray one like four times and only found her because the black and white one was also following her#And we would see him start stalking and go ah there she is#He finally went away#Godspeed little kitty#As for 'around here' - Chicago has an informal lesbian neighborhood#It's more generally queer these days but it used to be colloquially called girlstown as a mirror to the famous boystown#You go there to get drunk and hook up and you go here to buy furniture and records and walk your dog#And we live right on the edge of that neighborhood

Wait!
Wait!
I forgot there's a third option: A story that is FUN to fix because the BAD just hits right.
Manos: the Hands of Fate is super good for this because there are HINTS about how things may have happened, and the Torgo theme has a real feel to it. You can watch that terrible movie and see some neat shit.
This is not a niche opinion, by the way, a lot of people have come around on Manos. And I love that. But I also encourage you to watch anything by Ed Wood or Bert I. Gordon. They're both B-movie filmmakers who clearly loved what they were doing.
Oh, anything with Mamie Van Dorne has that going too. The biggest crime of Girlstown was that Paul Anka was cast as a teen heartthrob with a hard background (sure) and Mel Torme was supposed to be a tough guy (More believable than Anka, but still).
there's only one thing worse than an awful book, and that is an awful book with ONE tantalisingly compelling element
#bad stories#bad movies#it's very rare i remember bad books after about a month unless they are truly unsavalagable#but a bad movie sticks with me

Girlstown: A Chilling Case of Mass Demonic Possession | Documentary
In 2006, a student at the Girlstown boarding school made a Ouija board. Late night spirit summonings soon resulted in haunting, with girls at the school witnessing creepy ghosts and dark shadows across the building. Ultimately, the proclamation of a curse would cast the Villa de Las Ninas school and its students into paranormal chaos, with a mystery illness seemingly causing students to fall under demonic influence, suggesting that the curse and haunting of Girlstown may represent one of the greatest cases of mass demonic possession in all history.

ARCHITECTURE PROMPT DAY THREE
[Image ID: square instagram post with a grey concrete background and green, creeping vines. Text in the middle says: THREE in black font. /.End ID]
[Image text: Barkingside - Girlstown. Philip writes: Girlstown: Cairns House and the Village Green at Barnardo’s Girls Village Home in Barkingside. Inevitably, this is a tale founded on sadness and want. In 1876, Dr Thomas Barnardo opened a cottage homes village for girls, which was intended to provide a more civilised and caring environment than the “barracks” institutions that had preceded it. Barnardo relied on voluntary donations to enable him to open a village for “wayward” girls - typically orphans, or those at risk of abuse. Eventually, 65 cottages were built, each with a “house mother” who gave the girls support and guidance. In addition to the residential buildings, other facilities were provided, including a church, hospital and school. Barnardo died on 1905 and is buried at the site. The girls at Barkingside were prepared either for entry into domestic service, or emigration to Canada and Australia. As well as basic education, the girls were trained in skills such as baking, laundry and dressmaking. The village finally closed in 1991; the cottages around Babies’ Green have been preserved, and the whole site redeveloped for private housing. The Barnardo’s history is still very vivid at a site that mixed heartbreak and hope for 120 years. Acknowledgements for facts and archive pictures to www.childrenshomes.org.uk (where there is much more information, and many pictures) and the Clocktower Collection website. /.End ID]
[Image ID: A selection of five picturesque photographs of Bernardo’s Girls Village in Barkingside on a background of grey concrete. The photographs include brown brick cottages with white fascias and beams. One building includes a clock tower, and one is a standard English church. The final photograph is a black and white aerial shot of the village, including lawns and the clock tower. /.End ID]
[Image text: Writing Prompt - Anchor: On a creative writing workshop hosted by David Annand, a group of us explored how architecture can act as an anchor for the inner lives of our characters. Baker Street, Manderlay, Wuthering Heights, even Hogwarts, are all buildings whose architecture reflects and anchors some aspect of their inhabitants. In this post, Philip shares much of the history of this village and I think you'll have felt the mix of heartbreak and hope as you read. What kind of character could be anchored by these buildings? For this writing prompt, choose a building, any building, perhaps one of the Barnardo's cottages. Now focus on the shape, size, colour, material, light, shadow, height, pattern and purpose of the building, until you feel you know the character of the building. Next, try to put this character into human form. Write a vignette describing your building and your character in a way that shows how the two are tied together. /.End ID]
[Image text: In deep contrast to the buildings of yesterday where the looming shapes were imposing and rigid we are now graced with much more picturesque cottages with extra details designed for aesthetics. The tower certainly feels like it’s come from a fairytale castle, or perhaps it’s trapping someone there? Reading through Philip’s words it’s easy to create an image in our minds of the bustling activity that would have happened there, how the inhabitants would have spent their days. Compose a scene either outdoors or within one of these cottages, think about the original purpose of the cottages, will you make it a beacon of hope for an orphaned child or a vision of a hard life of labour? How does the setting influence the activity? If it’s a bedroom you’re creating think about how the personality of the owner is reflected in the decor. /.End ID]

oh word im in logan. yeah no its a bummer; like im new here but my partner's always like man it's so different than how it used to be but i have no real frame of reference y'know

Girlstown by (x)
This is probably one of my favorite pieces that I worked on. The reference image came from Pinterest and the rest was inspired by an article I read by Vox. It covered the story of a “haunted” Girlstown in Mexico.
