When I bought this game I went into the store deliberately for this game only. I walked into the store with a nice outfit and make up on, I started browsing the games when an employee came up and asked if they could help me find anything. When I told them that I was looking for God of War: Ascension I was them asked if I was getting my boyfriend a present and when I responded with the game was for me, the male employee was shocked and tried to suggest less gory games or even singing or dancing games. I assume he was suggesting these items because I was female but when I insisted I wanted GoWA he seemed put off and asked me if I thought I could "handle it" which I then replied I had already played the demo and enjoyed it, so I then grabbed the game looked for similar games and I found a few more, one game didn't have a cover so I had to ask what it was about and he told me it was a "hunting game with a lot of gore and chicks" he then proceeded to tell me I probably wouldn't like it because it's usually for guys. I ended up buying both games plus two more that were considered "manly" or geared for men. This experience reminded me of Lorber's piece "Night to His Day" and what she writes about "doing gender" and how everyone does it. Lorber's example with the child on the train and assuming it was a boy because of a sports cap when it was a female reminds me of how the guy assumed that I was buying a gory game for a boyfriend because I looked very feminine so i "obviously" couldn't be buying the game for myself. Which also brings up Lorber's point on how to society, gender means difference, and how men and women shouldn't do the same things like video games in my situation.
