Paula Hawkins  is a Zimbabwe-born British author, best known for her best-selling psychological thriller novel The Girl on the Train (2015), which deals with themes of domestic violence, alcohol, and drug abuse.The novel was adapted into a film starring Emily Blunt in 2016. Hawkins' second thriller novel, Into the Water, was released in 2017.

For the girl sitting in front of me on the train today.

I couldn’t help but overhear, what tragedies you went through. I couldn’t help but overhear, how you feel and think. Judging by your looks and the way you and your friend talked, you couldn’t be older than 16, maybe 17, and listening to you broke my heart.

As a kid, you said, you thought your parents would be together forever and that you would never date a boy, that it was always gonna be just you, that you’ve been thrown into a really adult life out of nowhere.

You said you remembered waking up on a day in March, two years ago that was, and everything was normal.

You said you remembered your best friend texting you because she was going on a skiing trip and how excited she was to see her uncle again.

You said, when you went to bed that night, everything felt normal.

The next day you woke up to a text that told you to go to a certain location and you went. Your best friend’s parents were there, looking distraught. Your best friend wasn’t there, she was dead.

You said her funeral was on a Thursday and that you thought it was the worst day of your life, and then on Friday your father left.

Nowadays, you said, you live with the feeling that something bad is going to happen any minute. You live, constantly prepared for another tragedy. Days go by and days are good, and yet you can’t quite shake the feeling that something terrible is right around the corner.

You also said that you choose not to accept the fact that everyone dies at some point, that you’re not delusional, that you’re very much aware that everyone has to go eventually, you just choose not to accept it, because if we just accept that everyone is going to die, why would life be worth living.

I didn’t have the guts to tap you on the arm, didn’t have the guts to tell you what I meant to tell you, and that is why I am writing this, in hope for you, someone, anyone who needs it, to read this text.

This is me, the girl behind you on that train, telling you, the girl with the sad voice, that accepting death as a part of life is not the end of the world, does not take away from the experience of life, does not make life worthless. There is so much to live for, wether you can see it right now or not. Don’t waste your life in fear of what hasn’t happened yet, don’t be afraid of what is to come. Find people that stick with you, and believe me, there are people that do. I didn’t believe it myself until one day I found them and I was no longer alone in the world. All of a sudden the world was not just grey anymore, life wasn’t just the fear of uncertainty anymore, it was colourful and exciting, filled with endless possibilities I couldn’t see before. Life is hard, you get hurt, crushed, dealt a shitty hand so to speak, but in all this, just remember, life’s a gift. The only truth you need to know is that death is certain, life isn’t.

Mình trở nên là mình hơn – người mà ngoại vẫn mong: “ là con gái, con phải mềm như lạt mát như bát nước”. Mình cũng biết lo cho mình hơn – sáng ăn gì, trưa tối ăn ra sao. Làm việc như thế có khoa học không? Người nào mình cần gặp, người nào mình không nên…. Chăm lo cho bản thân từng thứ vụn vặt như vậy nên mình không còn quá nhiều thời gian để nghĩ đến chuyện của người khác để buồn hay phán xét câu chuyện của bất kỳ ai… À thì là: “Trong hành trình cuộc đời, có rất nhiều chuyện xảy ra, có rất nhiều người bạn cần gặp.
