saw the news of rafa’s retirement this afternoon while at work and pretended i did not see it because i needed to function for the rest of the day.
now i am home and i cannot freaking stop crying. rafa has made me so happy over the years, ever since he came on in 2005 and won his first roland garros. i was a roger girlie through and through and secretly disliked this new kid that came to trash roger but at the same time i couldn’t hate him. he was too pure and endearing and most of all so exceptionally good! over the years i came to absolutely adore him. he made me feel so many emotions; pure joy, despair when he was in pain and injured, the exhilaration when he managed to turn things around and many times i almost lost my mind when he did so (us open 19, i’m looking at you). ever since he started the rafa nadal academy it was my dream to visit it on mallorca and i’m very happy to have made that dream come true in 2023. to see what he has achieved in his career is so amazing. so many beautiful memories. i’m gonna miss him so so so much 😭
my heart is so heavy right now. but i’m also very happy for rafa that he was finally ready to make this choice. he and his body deserve the rest and the time with his family.
gonna close this post with a picture roger posted on his insta. rafa at the start of his career with what became later on his closest rival and friend and at that time idol. these two forever hold my sports girlieheart 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
#my heart is broken 😭#r word reality#rafa nadal#tennis#rafael nadal#gosh all my favs have retired now 😭😭😭#roger seb kimi and now rafa#the sport gods hate me

I recently went to see Palaye Royale perform at the Gramercy Theater here in NYC, and it sure was a trip. The whole event kicked off with a VIP session with the band where attendees would get to go to a signing, do a Q&A and photos with the band. I definitely felt everyone’s excitement just from waiting in line an hour and a half prior to the start of VIP, unfortunately their singer, Remington Leith and brother/drummer Emerson Barrett were both sick so they wore medical masks. Nonetheless, the whole band still did the whole round of VIP activities and was a pleasure to meet even for a brief minute.
The venue was packed, it was their third night in a row selling out tickets on this “Final Boom” tour, where they’ll be closing off touring with their duo albums of “Boom Boom Room Side A” and “Side B”.
The first band to open up surprised me; they were a 4-piece group ages 15-20(ish) from Florida called “The Haunt”. I have to mention that their guitarists’ little sister was their singer and she was only 15, but the maturity and quality of her performance and voice was beyond her years. They kicked off the night with high energy and fans definitely were excited to see them as well. For a pretty young band, they were very impressive onstage. The next two bands “The Dead Poseys” and “Bones” also did a fantastic job at keeping the audience engaged, the anticipation was boiling in the crowd.
Palaye Royale’s performance was definitely high energy. Which was surprising considering the singer and drummer were sick, they still performed as if nothing was wrong. They kicked off the set with their song “Don’t Feel Quite Right” and ended with a song from their latest album “You’ll Be Fine” which I found ironic. They even played a tribute to their favorite band/crowd fave, My Chemical Romance’s “Teenagers” which seemed fitting. I was surprised to see the target demographic of this band be mainly 12-16 year old girls, often chaperoned by older siblings or parents and groups of friends. The fan base for Palaye is ridiculously dedicated to the band. I could hear them talking about anything and everything they knew about the guys through out the night. It was nice to see younger fans be into rock bands and even engage with each other during these shows and make new friends. It’s safe to say Palaye Royale isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Album Review/ Shoutout
For those of you who love pop punk, this up and coming 4 piece band from Ontario Canada called Castlefield may be up your alley. Their latest EP Tunnel Vision is definitely something with checking out. Maybe it’s just me, but I see a rise in popularity for math rock, and Castlefield introduces elements of that in this album. Intricate guitar parts in verses mixed with simple rhythms and chords progressions in choruses, seem to be the trend among the songs in this EP making it a “pop-punk-emo-meets-math-rock” typa vibe. If you like Neck Deep, Boston Manor or Real Friends’ lyrics and catchy choruses, you’re probably gonna like Tunnel Vision. For math rock fans who like Covet, Yvette Young, Ichika, Nito, Plini, Polyphia etc. there are melodic guitar elements similar to those bands found in Tunnel Vision. Keep an eye out for this band!

SHOW REVIEW:
On Halloween I saw Polyphia live at the Brooklyn Hall of Music, and it may or may not have been the one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. (I also may be biased because I bought a VIP ticket and I really do love them and their music.)
Polyphia recently put out a new album called “New Levels New Devils” last month and are currently taking it all over the globe with their first set of headling shows. For those who love math rock, progressive rock, EDM or trap, this band is a melting pot of all that which makes it hard to put their genre in a box.
The VIP session started with hanging out at the venue with about 20 other people to watch the band do their sound check, followed by a Q&A hang out and photos with the gang. They’re a pretty silly and charming group to talk to.
The shows line up was also fantastic. Their opener was CoVet, an instrumental trio from California featuring their talented guitarist Yvette Young, whose melodies and ability to play live are as smooth as butter. CoVet could make a crowd sway and swoon with their dreamy licks.
Following CoVet was a band called Hail The Sun, a post hardcore band from Chico California who had also recently put out a record called “Mental Knife” which was their first album to reach commercial success on the charts. Front man Donny Melero even took on the challenge of playing drums and singing at the same time for a couple songs on their set. The audience kept up and sang along to every word and cry Donny commanded onstage. This group really knows how to start a riot, the energy was so high, as a 5ft tall little girl I feared for what was to come when the actual headlining band was on stage (LOL).
As for the star of the whole show Polyphia, I’ve never seen a band is as tight and in sync as these guys. A member of a Brooklyn rap group, “Delivery Boys” was up onstage hyping up the crowd for the beginning, starting off the show on a high note with one of Polyphia’s new songs. Their performance was seamless, and you can tell how in-awe the crowd was by the perfect execution of every technically challenging part in Polyphia’s songs. Their guitarist Tim Henson is pretty much the king of writing hooks, you would think since the group is purely instrumental; they have a bunch of forgettable riffs that tend to sound alike. That’s completely untrue. The crowd was fully engaged the whole time even singing every hook and riff the band played. And though their records often have trap beats and electronic enhancements, this show was purely instrumental and live without any backing tracks. I stood front and center at the barrier and it’s safe to say, Polyphia fans loved to crowd surf and mosh, which just further hyped up the band.
To close out the night, the bands even came outside the venue to hang out with a few lingering fans. I was lucky enough to be there for it and was able to talk to their bassist Clay Gober for a while. It’s good to see the group still make the effort to engage with fans even though they’re headlining. It was overall a very memorable night.

Shoutout to Kim Kelly for standing her ground against men who think you have to be man to enjoy heavy metal (or any type of music).
Great article about belonging to a community because you want to. “I do belong here, and so does any other person—regardless of gender identity, sexuality, race, nationality, creed, or anything else—who wants to be here.”

Summer is for Sweating
I do not function well in heat. That said, I have to admit that I still like the summer - when there is enough beach around me or I am able to ignore the sweltering damp air around me, because the music is just too damn good.
Alas, my playlist. I packed a little German music, a little rap, a couple of electronic tunes and all that good ole summer music in there. Music for bouncing and music for chilling.
Hope you do enjoy.
xox Jules
Also, you may follow me on Spotify, if you want.

As per a friend’s recommendation, I downloaded Heart of Man by singer/songwriter Thad Kopec on Bandcamp last week. I gave it a few listens and quickly became completely enamored by the vocals. I did a Google on him and was flabbergasted to find he only had 225 Facebook likes (he now has 226). His album dropped back in 2012, and that’s all the love he has gotten? Seriously, check him out! This is one of my favorite tracks. Download this album and you won’t regret it!

beijing haze
White (sometimes white+, I can't really tell if there's a difference), is the brainchild of Shouwang, a pivotal figure in the no beijing movement and without question a major shaker in the Beijing underground music scene. Although frequently tagged as experimental, the music sits comfortably alongside BK/UK/Berlin acts tagged as indie or kraut. White(+) is unstoppable in terms of melodic hooks, these ear-worms gravitate and stick to the most splendid regions of the brain. Take "红 - reD" for instance, a cut that oozes pop-splendor, earning its #experimental with its occasional pause for classic laddio bolocko-esque noise break http://tenzenmen.bandcamp.com/track/red White is an act to take note of for many reasons, but most interesting to me any ways is the questions their sound raises concerning modern indie culture, the vacant term used for lack of a better alternative, and its correlation to the web. What can one make of the clear nods to shoegaze and kraut, and how do these sonic universals relative to geographically disparate 'local music scenes' render modern pop-culture identity? food for thought, great music for consumption SUPPORT THE ARTIST xX jer
