Girl in the Birdcage

The problem with keeping dramatic secrets from the audience is that the reveal of the mystery has to be satisfying or the drama starts to feel forced. There's several reveals in here that feel a bit uninteresting or pull the plot in less interesting directions. The characterizations are really good. Having characters that are mean, have a skewed perspective, or are emotionally and mentally strained can be a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the story does not lean into the dynamics of the characters as much as it could.

It is a fun read overall, but it left me wanting something more interesting and something with more 'bite.'

extremely unwell after thinking how luz changed hunter's fate 3 times...

...the first by being with him when he learns the truth about belos (and turns on him because of luz), ensuring that belos doesn't kill him like all the other grimwalkers

...the second by switching places with hunter (with help from gus), making sure that belos doesn't squash the last loose end before the day of unity

...and the third by introducing flapjack to hunter - and therefore leading to the moments in TTT where flapjack tries letting luz use his powers to save him, and then sacrificing his life to make sure that he lives

it is the destiny of every grimwalker to turn on belos and die by his hand - and it's only thanks to luz that this time it doesn't happen
