Fire was the most dangerous thing on board a ship, but it was necessary for lighting. Whale oil was the favoured fuel for lamps on board ships. If the lamps were tilted, as was common on ships, they could go out or, even worse, cause a fire. This gimballed lamp could rotate with the movement of the ship and was mainly found in the rigging

METAL WIRE GO SPINNY!

I got this one much more precise than my previous attempts, so it not only spins, it spins nearly silently. Plus I managed to build in some (experimental) attachment points, so hopefully the rest of the armguard will just slot onto it. (Once I build the rest, anyway.) This piece will go in the middle of my forearm so my wrists can freely rotate palm up/down.

Designed with an ingenious gyroscopic mechanism, the little reservoir and wick in the centre would remain upright at all times, even when the whole thing was swinging violently in rough seas. The outer cage was designed to keep the naked flame away from the rigging or sails or anything else that might catch fire.
