Secret Garden (2010): My Thoughts

The Premise:

Set in a fantastical modern day Seoul, the story revolves around Gil Ra Im, a feisty film stuntwoman, and Kim Joo Won, a self-involved chaebol who runs a lucrative department store. Their paths cross over a misunderstanding and continue to cross in a myriad of ways throughout the drama. The main plot point that makes it “fantastical” is when Ra Im and Joo Won magically change bodies and have to experience life from the others perspective. Will they ultimately change back? Will they learn something from the bodies they inhabit? What is continuing to connect these two people from seemingly opposite worlds?

The Characters:

Gil Ra Im: A stuntwoman who lost her firefighter father in a fire when she was 17. She is a tomboy with enough femininity to make her a plausible leading lady. She is resistant to Joo Won’s affections for the first half of the series and is extremely practical, realistic and driven.

Kim Joo Won: An arrogant, pragmatic chaebol who is the CEO of the LOEL department store. He takes his wealth and social position extremely seriously and views any relationships merit in regards to what it can do for him professionally. His attraction to Gil Ra Im is sudden and fervent, which takes him by surprise. He is both captivated and repulsed by her personality and poverty, which becomes a point of contention between them throughout the series. He seems to float between hyper masculinity in regards to his jealousy over Ra Im’s interaction with any man she encounters, and yet has sparks of strange childish behavior.( For instance, he is obsessed with labels and his sparkly purple tracksuit).

Choi “Oska” Woo Young: Joo Won’s colorful musician cousin. Oska has the same level of arrogance as his Joo Won, which he funnels into his popularity as a Korean Wave star and into his many “scandals” with his female “fans”. There is a subplot between him and his former love, Yeun-Sul, in which he attempts to discover what caused her to refuse his marriage proposal years earlier. There is also another plot involving supposed plagiarism which ultimately binds him with Yeun-Sul and a crabby songwriter, Tae Sun.

Yeun Sul: The former lover of Oska, we meet her as she is attempting to negotiate a possible marriage transaction with Joo Won. She holds onto bitterness due to her breakup with Oska, and there are glimpses throughout the series as to why she hates Oska and what she is willing to do to seek revenge. She has become a film director, which allows her to cross paths again with Oska, much to his initial chagrin.

My Thoughts on the Series:

I would say I liked this series about 50% of the time --- usually when Joo Won and Ra Im were focused on. The subplot with Oska and Yeun-Seul bored me almost to tears and could only really be tolerated due to the immature man-child antics that were employed by Oska. He was an amusing distraction to the tonal whiplash that was the series. Part romantic comedy, part-family tragedy, the drama didn’t really seem to land smoothly but bumped and skidded its way to a reasonably messy conclusion.

Joo Won, while entertaining, was mostly insufferable. Played beautifully by Hyun Bin (whom I love) the writing seem to play too long with his arrogance and cruelty and there really needed to be a smoother progression on the path to making him likable. It’s important to establish his high and mighty opinion of himself, but it felt pushed too far for too long to really recover. This is also true (in reverse) for Ra Im. She was feisty in her individual scenes but her reactions to the outlandish behavior presented by Joo Won seemed to be nothing more than a half-hearted attempt to fight back at him or a scowl. He seemed to find her protests more adorable rather than taking them at face value. 

There are some great romantic moments in this series, but I really think the plot suffers under the heavy weight of all the elements. The magical body swap element is touted from the beginning, but there doesn’t really seem to be much of a dramatic payoff in the end. To me, the purpose of this body swap was really more about these two contrasting characters learning about one another in a meaningful way that would bring them closer together. The way it was handled however, left me feeling as though the writer(s) really weren’t sure what to make of the swap, other a plot device to take us into the second half of the series.

Some of my favorite comedic moments were delivered by the side characters, primarily Ra Im’s bubbly roommate, Ah Young, and her long suffering boytoy, Secretary Kim. Their bubbly and spastic romance provided a much needed lightness to the series in the second-half of the drama. The other major characters to note would be the disaster that was Joo Won’s mother, Kim Sung Oh, and Ra Im’s pathetic action school director, Lim Jung Su. Both characters served their purpose as antagonists to the main couple, but with so much story to balance and so much being at stake for ALL the characters involved, they lacked real emotional depth. Joo Won’s mother for example, was so evil towards Ra Im that she seemed inhumane, like a villain from a Disney film and Jung Su’s unrequited love with Ra Im was never fully resolved and his pathetic inability to tell her how he was feeling really seemed to contrast with the tough and direct exterior of the character. These are examples of characters used as puzzle pieces meant to move the “game” along rather than having any real emotional weight in how the story was told.

I really enjoyed how it retained the fairytale quality consistently throughout the story which is encapsulated nicely in the last stages of the finale. We do get to know these characters and get to know them quite well, so we want them to be happy. I only wished the drama had spent more time on cultivating the story between Ra Im and Joo Won rather than trying to balance the cliched and over simplified misunderstanding between Oska and Yeun-Sul...why were we supposed to care about their relationship again?

The Verdict:

I’m not disappointed that I watched it -- I thought the actors did a good job with the material and my love for Hyun Bin is still intact. I think that with all the hype surrounding this series it could have been much better than it was. It just was crushed by the weight of the management of too much plot that I didn’t really care about. 6/10.

Finally I finished watching Secret Garden. TWO THUMBS UP!! I have come to really love this drama but I was so scared that the endong would be crappy like the ending of The Heirs. Kdramas tend to end so-so after having good pacing at the start or the last few episodes feels so dragging to watch-many dramas I've watched suffered from that like Sungkyungkwan Scandal,Heading to the ground and Ms.Ripley are just a few.. but Secret Garden lived up to my expectations!Thanks to the director for making a good ending to this drama. It was a not so happy ending... not ur typical kdrama but they end up together and thats the best part!!! ep14-20 were the most intense episodes.. I dare not stop watching. I squeeled,laughed and cried. Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won could actually pass as a real couple. The chemistry between them is soo overflowing and I just cant help but root for them til the end and both are VERY VERY good on acting. Mama loved them both for that, specially Hyun Bin oppar. Of course. hahaha. No wonder Hyun Bin got so many awards for his character in here as well as Ha Ji Won and the drama itself. It was even given the title of KOREA'S NATIONAL DRAMA for being so popular and well loved by all ages. I understand now why... cheers!!
