Weekend read: Duncan Gillies MacLaurin, 'The Real Pity'
No, Wilfred, I never believed your endeavour was more than a clever display. Did you think you could rescue the boys in the mess queue, or – no less grotesque – you’d betray your comrades by opting to stay in shock in Craiglockhart’s sick bay? Naive pretence is no defence for senseless sacrifice. Admit it, you were stupid to ignore Sassoon’s advice and blithely return to the fray, quite deaf to…

Just curious, how do you think Arthur met Mary?? Always confuses me how it would make sense back then that a “high society” girl would mix with outlaws??
I THINK THIS ALL THE TIME TOO-
I need more details about them two, I swear to god 😭
They could've met in a number of ways. Maybe Mary needed help with something and Arthur was just around to give her a hand. Maybe Arthur ran into her while he and and the gang were scoping a job. Honestly, given how helpful Arthur can be in the main story and the places he infiltrates, there could've been many ways they could've met.
Want to know my headcanon though?
We don't know what business the Gillis family was in in canon, so maybe Mary's family owned some sort of ranch as a business similar to the Pronghorn ranch in the epilogue. We also know that Arthur used to work on ranches from time to time when he was younger.
So maybe Arthur worked on a ranch that the Gillis family might've owned and wasn't an outlaw full time. Mary might've stumbled on Arthur whilst he was working or Arthur might've initiated a conversation with her while she was outside. It would also connect well with how the family always looked down at him and how he was able to meet all of them. It can also explain how Arthur was able to teach Jaime how to ride a horse similar to how John taught Duncan, his boss's son, how to ride.
I'm cooking 💪🏼💪🏼
Gonna write the fic now babes, brb-

THE MOST AUTHENTIC GHOST HUNTERS ON TV!
On September 13, 1969, the first episode of SCOOBY DOO, WHERE ARE YOU? premiered on CBS Television and changed the lives of thousands of kids who'd grow up wishing for their own version of the Mystery Machine.
The series was created for Hanna-Barbera Productions by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, loosely basing the original episodes on the old "I Love A Mystery" radio show. The Saturday morning cartoon show featured four teenagers—Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, and Norville "Shaggy" Rogers (based on beatnik Maynard G. Krebs from "Dobie Gillis")—and their talking Great Dane named Scooby-Doo, who solved what seemed to be supernatural mysteries through a series of mishaps. In the end, they always found out that the real monsters were people, which is a statement on society that hasn't really changed in 50 years.
Those "meddling kids" became a huge success and the show featured guest voices that ranged from Batman and Robin (Adam West and Burt Ward), Vincent Price, Sandy Duncan, the Addams Family, Phyllis Diller, Don Knotts, and "Mama" Cass Elliot. It would later change networks, change formats, and become feature films.
The characters have become a part of America's cultural history and, to this day, are more believable than any of the other ghost hunters that have appeared on our TV screens.

Put On Your Raincoats | Slave of Pleasure (Costello, 1978)
If you're looking to smut up your Noirvember, you could do worse than dive into the work of Shaun Costello, who here and elsewhere has structured his films around the work of private detectives. I'm afraid that the private detective in this one, played by Roger Caine, is not an exemplar of his profession, given that most of the key information his client, played by Shaun Costello, learns without his help, and at the most critical moment, he decides to chicken out and tells his client he's on his own. I would not hire this man to track down a grilled cheese sandwich.
While many pornos have vague or misleading titles, this one definitely makes good on its one, given that the villains, among them Gloria Todd, Jamie Gillis (doing a French accent that he drops after a single scene), Dave Ruby and Herschel Savage (in his Gene Shalit era), are running a sex slavery ring, and you get varying degrees of domination in the different sex scenes. There's the opening scene where Costello's wife Roseanne Farrow decides she wants more "adventure" and takes a more assertive role, which begins with some foot worship (which I don't think I've seen in a porno from this era before) and goes from there. The villains use an experimental CIA drug to make their victims compliant, which among other things leads to a scene where Gillis, insisting on trying out the merchandise, commands Farrow and another girl accordingly at the same time. Caine goes to his contact Ashley Moore, who shows him footage from an experiment (Robert Kerman and Theodora Duncan in a medical style scene) and then demonstrates the efficacy of the drug in person when he commands his secretary Ursula Austin with what looks like a calculator into having a threesome with them. And there's the big climactic BDSM orgy sequence featuring Todd and her subordinates and the great CJ Laing, who specializes in the rough stuff and makes this scene replete with whips and restraints and scary looking clamps go down a lot smoother.
Costello as he often does directs the sex with a great feel for cutting to the impeccably chosen music and finds interesting rhythms through the editing. I do think he miscalculates by cutting to plot in the middle of the sex scenes, although I appreciate him trying to play around with the pacing and structure and his usual street-level energy, even if I don't think it entirely works. And given how important she is to the story, I wish Farrow got a meatier role. But the sex is consistently spicy, there's some nice Coney Island location footage that he shoots the hell out of, as well as some pretty snazzy outfits from the cast, including Farrow in a sleek black dress, Gillis in a double-breasted pinstripe suit, Laing with a super wide collar shirt and a sportcoat, and Costello in a nicely textured brown sportcoat. So I had a good time with this.

Obsessed as I am with names, I’ve been thinking about how to categorize characters’ names in A Song of Ice and Fire, since some are common in the real world and some are much more fantastic. I’ve come up with the following categories (using a small fraction of the approximately 1.5 million people mentioned in A Storm of Swords). They’re kind of a spectrum from most common in the real world to least; and if I put the name into Google and most of the results were about ASOIAF, they’re probably in the penultimate (or ultimate) category. NB: This does not include nicknames, epithets, noms de guerre, etc.
Level 1: Yeah, That’s a Name. Jon, Robert, Brandon, Catelyn, Tom, Joanna, Sandor, Gregor, Robin, Arthur, Duncan, Preston, Manfred, Jason, Ben, Simon, Pia, Hildy, Meera, Val
Level 2: Horseshoes and Hand Grenades. Jaime, Oberyn, Joffrey, Aegon, Brienne, Ramsay (real-world surname as given name), Margaery, Walder, Addam, Gilly, Petyr, Lysa, Osmund, Garlan, Gerold, Alyn, Lyonel, Cedrik, Gwayne, Steffon, Sumner, Rickard, Eddard, Arya, Elwood, Robb, Donnel, Robar, Emmon, Kevan, Genna, Jeyne, Podrick, Brynden, Ryam
Level 3: I’ve Connected the Two Dots. Cersei (Circe?), Ellaria (Hilaria?), Tytos (Titus), Myrcella (Marcella), Melisandre (Melusine?), Samwell (Samwise), Olenna (Elena), Ronnet (Ronald), Hyle (Kyle), Drogo (draco), Ygritte (~Ygraine), Benjen (Benjamin), Rorge (Scooby-Doo pronunciation of George)
Level 4: IDK GRRM. Tywin, Tyrion, Tommen, Gendry, Stannis, Vargo, Loras, Renly, Missandei, Varys, Boros, Osney, Osfryd, Meryn, Barristan, Mandon, Balon, Theon, Lormelle, Lewyn, Oswell, Sansa, Rickon, Edmure, Arys, Syrio, Jonothor, Parmen, Qyburn, Euron, Davos, Mance, Tormund, Jojen
Level 5: Targaryens.
#this is partly serious and partly not#so please don't take it too seriously#(I remain scared of a fandom this big)#this should really be some kind of ouroboros Venn diagram#since several of these may fit into multiple categories#asoiaf

what are your asoiaf/hotd ships?
i am a multi shipper and my criteria for a ship is “i think it would be interesting” so that doesn’t mean i inherently want it to happen in canon, it just means they have a dynamic with some romantic tones in it that appeals to me - sometimes in a “they would be sweet” way and sometimes in a “oh they would make each other much much worse excellent” way. also - there’s just so many goddamn characters in asoiaf, very good chance i’m missing a ship i like. so anyways i italicized the ones i really enjoy let’s go -
house of the dragon
Rhaenyra/Harwin
Viserys/Daemon
Jace/Addam
Rhaenyra/Daemon
Rhaenyra/Laena
Essie/Sylvie
Rhaenyra/Aegon II
Gaemon/Aegon III
Baela/Cregan
Jace/Cregan
Laenor/Joffrey
Aegon/Helaena/Aemond (sometimes daeron is there but idc about him he’s boring lol. all the war crimes none of the mommy issues of his older siblings).
Alicent/Rhaenyra
Sabitha Frey/Black Aly
Rhaenys/Corlys
Daemon/Laena
Laenor/Daemon
Aemond/Alys
Rhaena/Jace (mostly bc of a fic i read tbh haha)
Jace/Nettles
also fuck alyn oakenfist all my homies hate alyn oakenfist
asoiaf (main series ships)
Sansa/Brienne
Sansa/Theon
Theon/Robb
Brienne/Jaime
Ned/Cat
Jon/Sansa
Cat/Brienne
Cat/Jaime
Cersei/Cat
Jon/Sam
Arya/Gendry
Thoros/Beric
Davos/Stannis (with Salladhor being super jealous in the background)
Davos/Stannis/Melisandre but like that caleb gallo meme “we’re in a gay centric semi non sexual throuple” no one knows what meli gets out of it but if you imply she’s not an important part of the throuple they start throwing shit at you
Robb/Jeyne Westerling
Oberyn/Willas
Jon/Young Griff
Joanna Lannister/Loreza Martell
Rhaella/Elia
Oberyn/Ellaria
Elia/Rhaegar
Renly/Loras
Ned/Cersei
Sansa/Jeyne Poole
Jon/Sam/Gilly
Sansa/Margaery
Jon/Ygritte
Sam/Gilly
Cat/Jason Mallister
Roslin/Edmure
Dany/Rakharo
Arya/Edric Dayne
Jon/Satin
Ashara/Elia
Arianne/Aegon VI
Jon/Arianne
Grey Worm/Jeyne Poole
Willas/Ellaria
i would say probably my favorites are nedcat, braime, throbb, and thoros/beric, i find their dynamics so romantic and tragic, like when i think about them i feel physical pain and that is what i need in a ship.
i did also really enjoy grey worm & missandei in the show even tho the ending was bullshit. and dany/jorah is marginally less creepy mostly bc of the actors chemistry lol so i am known to get slightly emo over show only jorah/dany but that’s bc their dynamic is also wildly different in the show, and also it’s ust that they gave me iain glen and harry lloyd in that amazing “yet here you stand” scene and i’ve been chasing that high ever since aksjsj
asoiaf (historical ships)
Nymeria/Mors
Elaena/Michael Manwoody (ONCE AGAIN ALYN OAKENFIST IS MY ULTIMATE OPP)
Duncan the Small/Jenny of Oldstones
Myriah/Daeron
Maron/Daenerys
Naerys/Melissa
Rhaena/Elissa Farman
Rhaena/Maegor
Rhaena/Elinor Costayne
Daeron/Jeremy Norridge
Elaena/Daena
Baelor/Maekar
Maekar/Dyanna Dayne
Aegon V/Betha
there’s some eras i haven’t really dug into yet that i want to, so i’m sure i’ll get interested in other characters too, and my reread will likely throw some other shit in my brain as well. but this is what i could think of for right now.
#asks#like i’m definitely missing some there’s a million characters aksjjd#but i guess these are the ‘main’ ones#there’s actually a dead dove don’t eat one i read a lot for aksjsjsjs that i did not list

Using form: Songs as poems: Duncan Gillies MacLaurin, 'But At Least I Had A Ball'
I’ve always loved to sing an’ dance. I’m better at the first. An’ given even half a chance, I’m bound to do my worst. I’ve struggled sometimes with romance, succumbed to alcohol, but at least I had a ball. I liked to smoke a lot of weed an’ hash while in my prime. I’d barely write an’ hardly read, just wasted space an’ time. I didn’t think that I’d succeed with anything at all, but at least I had…

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? – The Iconic Debut of a Classic Mystery Squad
The beloved cartoon Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! first graced the CBS network on Saturday, September 13, 1969, at 10:30 AM Eastern Time. The series introduced us to a colorful cast of characters: Scooby-Doo, the lovable Great Dane voiced by Don Messick; Shaggy, his perpetually hungry and cowardly best friend, voiced by Casey Kasem; Fred, the brave and resourceful leader, voiced by Frank Welker; Velma, the brilliant and analytical member of the gang, voiced by Nicole Jaffe; and Daphne, the often-in-danger fashionista, voiced by Indira Stefanianna.
Scooby-Doo’s speech patterns bear a striking resemblance to Astro from The Jetsons, also voiced by Messick. The show’s theme song, penned by David Mook and Ben Raleigh and performed by Larry Marks, set the tone for a series that quickly became a Saturday morning staple. Seventeen episodes were produced for the show's first season, which showcased the Mystery Inc. gang solving spooky mysteries and uncovering elaborate hoaxes.
Each episode follows the same thrilling formula: the gang arrives in their psychedelic Mystery Machine, confronts a supposed supernatural threat, and investigates. After splitting up to search for clues, they’re usually chased by the monster, only to discover that the supernatural creature is a villain in disguise. The villain, often revealed as a common criminal, is apprehended thanks to Fred’s ingenious traps and left to face justice with the infamous line, "if it weren't for those meddling kids."
Despite competing with ABC's The Hardy Boys, Scooby-Doo soared in popularity, capturing up to 65% of Saturday morning viewers. This success led to a second season in 1970, introducing eight more episodes and bubblegum pop chase sequences by Austin Roberts. With Heather North stepping in as Daphne after Stefanianna’s retirement, the character continued to evolve over the years.
The show drew inspiration from earlier TV hits like I Love a Mystery and Dobie Gillis, with noticeable parallels between Shaggy and Dobie’s friend Maynard. Similarities to Enid Blyton's Famous Five are also evident, as both feature a group of youths and a dog solving non-supernatural mysteries.
The roles of the main characters were well-defined: Fred as the determined leader, Velma as the smart detective, Daphne as the danger-prone beauty, Shaggy as the timid, hungry sidekick, and Scooby-Doo as the goofy yet courageous dog. Later iterations of the show saw updates to Daphne’s character, including karate skills and a reduction in her tendency to get kidnapped.
The influence of Scooby-Doo extended far beyond its original run, inspiring a wave of similar Saturday morning cartoons throughout the 1970s, including Josie and the Pussycats, The Funky Phantom, Speed Buggy, and more.
In 1972, The New Scooby-Doo Movies premiered, featuring hour-long episodes with guest stars ranging from Hanna-Barbera characters like the Harlem Globetrotters and Batman to celebrities such as Sandy Duncan and The Three Stooges. After two seasons and 24 episodes, CBS began rerunning the original Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! until 1976, solidifying the show’s place in television history.

Dunk & Egg are novellas written by George R. R. Martin, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire and Fire & Blood. It's actually a prequel to the main series and happens 90 years before the events of GoT. The main character is Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, who later became Aegon V, Daenerys' great grandfather. If you remember Maester Aemon of the Nights Watch from GoT, he was his brother (he mentions Egg on his deathbed to Sam and Gilly and earlier to Jon).
In any case, I recommend these novellas, they are are not very long but they are a fun read imo, and the characters are great. GRRM published three, The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight and now we'll have a show based on them. If you like GRRM's Westeros, (and we all do, that's why we are here:)) I believe you'll like Dunk & Egg novellas.
I’m gonna find their Ebooks today!!! Thank you nonnie for these amazing suggestions!
I believe I’d like it as well because I’m obsessed with royalty core and settings like that! 🩷🩷🩷

this is a starter for @rxckbellz! ♡
“Ah, Gilly Boy… Quem te atropelou?!”
