Dear Gus & Magnus,
Some months ago, I became infatuated with a Chappell Roan song called "Pink Pony Club," and I listened to it enough times around the house that I heard Gus singing it to himself when the song wasn't even playing. Then we introduced it to Mom, who also liked it, so we made it our Choate Family Song for a while -- and maybe it still is? Anyway, when I found out Chappell was on tour and making a stop at her hometown in Springfield, I bought tickets for Mom and me to go. We considered taking Gus since he likes the song so much, but ultimately decided against it so we could get some time away to ourselves.
The show was fantastic and we sat a few rows up in the balcony from Chappell's parents, with a clear view of her grandparents, which was a fascinating way to see a pop show. Instead of opening bands, the openers were drag queens and the crowd -- most of whom were dressed like they were at the Pink Pony Club -- went absolutely wild. The show was at once wholesome and edgy, and the crowd was incredibly positive/supportive of everyone on stage as well as everyone in the crowd. Unlike any show I've ever been to.
Dad.

HALESTORM's LZZY HALE And JOE HOTTINGER Announce 'The Living Room Sessions' 2025 Tour
Tumblr media
Lzzy Hale and Joe Hottinger of Grammy-winning hard rock band HALESTORM have announced an intimate tour featuring the two of them performing acoustic, stripped down versions of HALESTORM favorites and the music that has inspired the band. Dubbed "Halestorm's Lzzy And Joe: The Living Room Sessions", the tour consists of 12 dates in January 2025. A full list of dates is below.
A special BLABBERMOUTH.NET presale will begin on Thursday, October 24 at 10:00 a.m. local time and end on Thursday, October 24 at 10:00 p.m. local time. When prompted, type in the presale code "2025FREAKS" to access tickets before the general public. Check back here on Thursday for ticketing links to individual shows. General on-sale will be Friday, October 25 at 10 a.m. local time.
To give fans a taste of what’s to come at the shows, today Lzzy and Joe posted a sneak preview of a performance of "The Silence".
Lzzy states: "With this tour, we're inviting our fans to experience what it would be like hanging with Joe and me in our living room: picking up instruments, telling stories, chatting about songs that helped shaped us as a band and brought us to where we are today."
Joe adds: "Back when we decided to quit our day jobs and make music our full-time endeavor, Lzzy and I would play music wherever we could, and sometimes that meant playing acoustic covers in any bar or restaurant that would have us. That time really allowed us to develop our playing skills and dig into songwriting, and it really set the groundwork for what HALESTORM is today."
"Halestorm's Lzzy And Joe: The Living Room Sessions" 2025 tour dates:
Jan. 08 - Flint, MI - The Machine Shop Jan. 10 - Bloomington, IL - Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts Jan. 11 - Des Moines, IA - Hoyt Sherman Theatre Jan. 13 - Springfield, MO - Gillioz Theatre Jan. 14 - Little Rock, AR - The Hall Jan. 16 - Chattanooga, TN - The Signal Jan. 17 - Biloxi, MS - Hard Rock Live Jan. 19 - Pensacola, FL - Vinyl Music Hall Jan. 21 - Savannah, GA - District Live at Plant Riverside District Jan. 22 - Charleston, SC - Charleston Music Hall Jan. 24 - Springfield, MA - Aria Ballroom/MGM Springfield Jan. 25 - South Burlington, VT - Higher Ground
In a September 2024 interview with PK of Louisville, Kentucky's ALT 105.1 radio station, Lzzy spoke about the progress of the recording sessions for HALESTORM's follow-up to 2022's "Back From The Dead" album. Lzzy said: "We've had three separate sessions in the studio with — we're making a record with [producer] Dave Cobb. And he's actually a huge closet metal fan, and so he's really excited. And so we're making this great music, but we're constantly touring. So we've had, like, three different sessions in the studio. We're probably — what? — 70, 80, maybe, percent there. We have a studio in our house and so I'm doing a lot of the finishing touches on vocals and sewing everything up, doing solos and all that. And then we get back in in December to just say, 'Okay, this is good.' And then, yeah. And then there we are. So we're excited about it. We really are."
Cobb has shared in nine Grammy wins, including four for "Best Americana Album" and three for "Best Country Album". He's also been named "Producer Of The Year" by the Country Music Awards, the Americana Music Association (twice) and the Music Row Awards, and has been a Grammy nominee in the category.
HALESTORM and I PREVAIL recently embarked on summer 2024 co-headlining tour. Produced by Live Nation, the trek kicked off on July 9 in Raleigh and ran through August 17 in Las Vegas. HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD and FIT FOR A KING served as support. The tour was also the catalyst and the creative spark for HALESTORM and I PREVAIL's collaborative track "Can U See Me In The Dark?", which was released in June.
"Back From The Dead" has tallied over 100 million streams worldwide. Rolling Stone called the title track "a biting but cathartic howler about overcoming all obstacles," and that song as well as "The Steeple" marked their fifth and sixth number ones at rock radio, respectively. Associated Press said the album "will definitely be in the running for best hard rock/metal album of the year." Their previous album, "Vicious", earned the band their second Grammy nomination, for "Best Hard Rock Performance" for the song "Uncomfortable", the band's fourth #1 at rock radio, and led Loudwire to name HALESTORM "Rock Artist Of The Decade" in 2019.
Fronted by Lzzy with Arejay, Hottinger and bass player Josh Smith, HALESTORM's music has earned multiple platinum and gold certifications from the RIAA, and the band has earned a reputation as a powerful live music force, headlining sold-out shows and topping festival bills around the world, and sharing the stage with icons including HEAVEN & HELL, Alice Cooper, Joan Jett and JUDAS PRIEST. Additionally, Lzzy was named the first female brand ambassador for Gibson and served as host of AXS TV's "A Year In Music".

Hill City Church- Springfield, Missouri
by: @hdesigngroup @touchedesignco @SnyderConstructionGroup @hillcitysgf

SEE: Pop Music | Chappell Roan - “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl”
Tumblr media
Chappell Roan is a fierce new artist from Los Angeles that debuted in 2017 with her EP School Nights but Roan just released her first full-length album, The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess, and it is a banger! Every song is unique, thought-out, and exceptional in its own right. Hear/See “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” below: Read More: After building up a cult-like fanbase over the past year with a steady wave of irresistible album singles, Midwestern darling and imminent pop star Chappell Roan delivers her highly anticipated debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, out today via Amusement/Island Records, alongside a visualizer for single “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl”, live at 12 PM ET HERE. Next week, Chappell Roan will embark on her headlining Midwest Princess Tour, kicking off September 25 in Roseville, CA. Tickets on sale at iamchappellroan.com. In February and March of 2024, Chappell Roan will join Olivia Rodrigo as support for select dates along her 2024 Guts World Tour. A technicolor celebration of self-discovery and transformation, The Rise & Fall of a Midwest Princess tracks Chappell’s cinematic journey of falling in queer love for the first time, while embracing all the messy and imperfect moments in-between. Penned by Chappell alongside Daniel Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, Guts), the project’s early 2022 singles like “Naked in Manhattan,” and “Casual” have been praised for their “coming-of-age exuberance” (NPR) and “biting candor” (Pitchfork). The album touches every genre from the euphoric dance-pop of “My Kink Is Karma,” introspective acoustic guitar ballads like “Kaleidoscope,” the country-pop “Red Wine Supernova,” and the punky singalong charisma “HOT TO GO!”. Her synth-pop smash breakthrough, 2020’s “Pink Pony Club”, set the tone for Chappell’s evolution into her own version of pop stardom: a small town rhinestone cowgirl delivering euphoric, heartfelt bangers, and a queer icon for a generation. Tonight, queer bars in seven major cities will host themed album release listening parties complete with raffles for tickets to Chappell’s Midwest Princess Tour, drag performances, karaoke, costumes and dancing: Chicago @ Sidetrack (Pink Pony Club Theme), New York City @ Cubbyhole (Slumber Party Theme), Detroit @ Gigi’s (Rainbow Theme), Portland @ Doc Marie’s (Pink Pony Club Theme), Nashville @ The Lipstick Lounge (Space Theme), Los Angeles @ Or Bar (My Kink is Karma Theme), and London @ The Grace (Chappell Universe Theme). About her debut album Chappell says, “After 4 years in the making comes my 14-song album holding stories of unearthing my true self and fearlessly embracing queerness. My whole project is a rebellion to how I was raised. I want what I never had—a safe place to dress, sing, and dance however you want to, and be who you truly are. I think the album encapsulates the whole process of birthing a new me and then ultimately abandoning it. That push and pull is a perfect example of me obsessing over my dream but despising it at the same time. The music made me evolve. With the contrast of my Midwestern upbringing and living in one of the biggest cities in the U.S., ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’ mirrors the rollercoaster of becoming the popstar I always wanted to be.” Leading up to her North American headlining Midwest Princess Tour, already sold out in 23 cities including two Brooklyn Steel shows, Chappell celebrated the album with a free show in her hometown on September 20 at Springfield, Missouri’s Gillioz Theatre, complete with a pageant for fans, a red carpet entrance, themed drinks and more—all in support of local LGBTQ space The Glo Center. The subsequent Midwest Princess Tour will scale up her intoxicating live show experience across the US and Canada. Additionally, a limited number of tickets will be awarded as show “scholarships” for fans facing financial difficulties in an effort to keep attendance affordable and shows accessible across the wide-spanning tour. An electrifying performer, Chappell wrapped her debut headline Naked in North America tour in March, selling-out all tour stops including New York (Webster Hall), Los Angeles (The Fonda), San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto and more. Featuring opening sets from drag queens, each night incorporated a different dress theme (like “homecoming dance” and “goth, grunge, and glitter”). The ecstatic shows earned universal praise for Chappell’s exhilarating performances and for creating a “glamorous safe space,” and “disco dance party where everyone can feel like the most fun, the most free version of themselves,” in rooms bursting at the seams with energy. The Rise & Fall of a Midwest Princess is a courageous, semi-autobiographical statement allowing Chappell Roan to continue to connect with her growing fanbase by championing open and honest expression of identity and unapologetic sexuality. With her bold pop hooks, sex positivity, honest songwriting, and expressive style and spirit, she has already earned press nods from Pitchfork, NPR, MTV, Vulture, Billboard, V Magazine, Rolling Stone, Teen Vogue and more. This year, Chappell was named Amazon Music’s Breakthrough Artist of 2023. Through her punchy bangers that combine fantastical narratives and heart-bearing self-reflection, the LA-based singer, songwriter, and performer received well-deserved traction in both the digital and live music world paving the way for The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and more live shows coming this year. Ambiance Machine: 303bnb
A little adjustment to the conduit at the 303bnb and this little magic maker fit right in. It does actually have a built-in quartz heater to fully trick your senses into thinking your wall is ablaze. The only thing missing is that tell-tale pop and crack of a real fire. Spend the night in this cute little apartment next time you’re in Springfield MO.

#028-Gillioz Theatre
The Gillioz Theatre, one of the Midwest’s great old theatres is located on historic Route 66 in the Springfield Public Square Historic District. It was built by M. E. Gillioz of Monett, Missouri. Mr. Gillioz was a well-known builder and developer in southwest Missouri. He financed and built the theatre, which was named in his honor. Mr. Gillioz was in the business of building bridges, and the theater was built with steel and concrete. Wood was only used for handrails, doors, and doorframes. The original cost of the building was $300,000. The theater opened on October 11, 1926 to tremendous acclaim.  The sold-out crowd was enchanted by the opulent Spanish Colonial Revival design, and modern visitors are equally impressed today. The theater was originally a transition theater, with a pipe organ for silent movies and a stage for live performances, such as vaudeville acts. A sound system was installed in 1928 with the advent of talkies. Now the Gillioz is mainly a concert venue, hosting a wide range of entertainment anyone can enjoy. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. If you enjoyed this photo you may want to check out others at www.417art.com

At The Movies
The carnage from COVID-19 is going to reach far and wide. TV documentaries will be made. Books will be written. And movies will be filmed.
It’s just too bad that the latter might not have any place to show them. The AMC theater chain just announced it may not survive the pandemic or its aftermath.
Tumblr media
America has long had a love affair with the silver screen. Decades ago, before sprawling suburban multiplex screens, towns as small as just a few thousand people could support a single-screen theater. And these were not the saccharine big-box theaters of the 21C. No, they were ornate, often with balconies and elaborate interiors, complemented by marquees with miles of neon tubing and chaser bulbs.
Yeah, they were a pretty big freaking deal.
One of my passions today as I scour the American roadside is to look for what remains of these old theaters. In the vast majority of cases, they have been abandoned for years, their decaying carcasses swollen like an infected tooth on the face of the downtown square. Nonetheless, I photograph what is left, a damaged marquee with neon tube dangling, broken windows, shattered dreams and memories.
Sometimes I find one that is still operational, or even been restored and reopened to its earlier grandeur, like the Mulkey in Clarendon Texas, or the Gillioz in Springfield Missouri. Be still, my beating heart. Those are amazing places. But those are rare.
A funny thing happened 60-70 years ago when we started exchanging our more urban lives for the then-open space of the suburbs. We decided we would really rather just watch movies in gigantic structures at which we could select from several or even a dozen titles, each of us loading up on popcorn and sugary drinks in a common food court area.
Oh, if we knew then what we were doing to our culture. We traded class for declasse, glass for plastic.
After three months of pandemic living, I can understand why our theater chains are in trouble. They were among the very first to have to close. How can they do business-as-usual at all without violating every protocol written since then? The very idea of a theater was social un-distancing, packing people into seats with surfaces that are seldom if ever cleaned. All that breathing. Laughing. Sharing.
You get the picture.
While theaters are now being allowed to reopen under strict safety measures, I have my doubts that people will want to return. These theaters depend on packed houses to pay their bills, much of which goes to pay Hollywood for the rights to show the movies. If you have to skip rows and seats, it guarantees that theaters will be handicapped severely. And will theaters necessarily be able to clean every surface between showings, and--impossible, I know--keep people from breathing, laughing, or coughing?
It’s not looking good, is it? But wait, there’s more!
During the pandemic, people watched whatever they could at home, which means that streaming is now more popular than ever before, and it was already the 800-pound gorilla in the living room. With HBO Max recently debuting along with other services, we now have so much choice available from home that going out isn’t what it was. And if you took your family of four to the movies once a month, you likely spent in excess of $50, which is enough to pay for three or four streaming subscriptions.
During the pandemic, some production houses went direct-to-TV or streaming, since they couldn’t show in theaters. While historically theaters have enjoyed a buffer period in which they had exclusivities, this may not always be the case. Theaters now face competition from their suppliers, and the theaters could find themselves disintermediated along with being handicapped.
The problem with the prospect of abandoned suburban theaters is that, while some of the older properties have been repurposed as churches, the big strip mall alternative is too big for such new uses. What else could ever fit into a building with a food court and a dozen viewing rooms with stadium seating?
I’ll wait. And wait.
I am sad for AMC and the other chains, like Regal and Cinemark. It’s going to be tough plowing ahead, because the once-fertile soil has been fertilized with nutrients from a different source. While I suspect we will continue to stream with reckless abandon, I also think--maybe it’s hope--that the old-school single-screen theater may find room for a comeback. After all, we are still social animals, but having a little less choice, and in a more elegant setting, could be very attractive for everything from films to concerts and a variety of special events, even weddings.
And that is a scene I would pay to see, a return to our former sensibilities. Let’s find a way to turn the detritus of the pandemic into gold for future generations.
