Spoilers Criminal Minds S15 E4 Saturday ahead
I love the criminal minds episode Saturday. What a breath of fresh air for most of it (except the you know stalking case but even that feels almost like a breath of fresh air and a important topic change, bc stalking doesn’t always get taking seriously but this isn’t situation where multiple people are dead like normal cases, it’s Garcia relating and wanting to help one of the people taking her workshop, and it has a different vibe then Maeve’s case where it very much felt dark dramatic tones of plot and one of favorite characters love on being at risk, while this one has literal more light tones, the apartment was very bright to the usual scenes we see on top of the other stuff going on in this episode just brightens it as well)
I love Max, I love Max, I always forget how much I love Max, especially when she starts off feeling like Spencer’s being creepy when he’s like obviously leaning away from this kid (but of course it’s her nephew like protective instincts definitely reacted there). But seriously, I love her goofing off and bringing Spencer into this “I can have funny in silly goofy way” vibes. And as we all sometimes forget Spencer didn’t get a normal childhood where he really got to be a kid a ton so this definitely feels like it’s bringing a bit of his inner child out.
The crazy neighbor trying to sue Emily for a crazy reason. Like come on this is so funny and something you hear from a decent amount of people. Like neighbors are something sometimes…
And Tara “you owe me so many drinks for this” before handling him lmao
(I also love Tara, I also forget how much I love Tara. Bringing another person with a PhD and how there’s two “it’s Dr” people! And her “your mom” jokes. I love them. I love her being a smart and serious woman who can also play these like middle school kid jokes lmao)
And then we have Matt, with he new coming child, struggling with money and building furniture. And Rossi coming and helping him! Especially when Rossi never got to do that for his kids (at least as far as I remember I was jumping around and then got sucked into watching them mostly in order by Reids prison arc lmao)
“Good find me” Max
And in a fun way not a serial killer catch me like Cat
(And the look on JJs face realizing he’s finally looking at someone who makes him so happy, something they didn’t really get to see with Maeve bc it was so secretive)

Matthew Modine UFO Documentary: Accidental Truth UFO Revelations
A still from the new documentary Accidental Truth: The UFO Revelations.Image: 1091 Pictures A lot was happening in 2020 so there’s a chance you may have missed something—like the fact the New York Times published a story basically saying aliens are real. The claim was based on a document stating that the government has found unexplained objects that were “not made on this earth.” You read that…

Alright so, ER rewatch is happening, but I'm swamped with work and so I'll have to wait for episode posts. For now, an initial inventory of my remembrance of the main characters/my opinion of them:
Love: Carol Hathaway, Mark Greene, Susan Lewis, Kerry Weaver, Abby Lockhart, Luka Kovač
Really like: John Carter, Doug Ross, Peter Benton, Elizabeth Corday, Lucy Knight, Jing-Mei Chen, Greg Pratt
Like: Jeanie Boulet*, Cleo Finch, Michael Gallant
Unlikeable but not devoid of complexity: Robert Romano, Dave Malucci
I remember your existence: Neela Rasgotra, Anna Del Amico
I don't remember your existence: Sam Taggert, Ray Barnett, Archie Morris, Tony Gates, Simon Brenner, Cate Banfield
*Jeanie's on the cusp between Like and Really like.
I'll be curious to see if my opinions change much watching this show 15-30 years after it initially aired. No doubt there will be cringe "Oh wow that aged poorly" moments, but hopefully also some that hold up well. It'll also be interesting to watch a pre-Prestige TV critical hit post-Prestige TV (and yeah, nostalgic, I'm getting quite nostalgic in my old age). And I'm wondering how my impressions of the characters will hold up in a close watch; I think I'm much more analytical now, and I'm pretty sure my opinions reflect the characters at their best without necessarily accounting for them at their worst. Although maybe that's not a bad thing as long as it's consistent.
More character recollections, some quite spoilery:
Mark's death slew me. It was so protracted too, he was suffering so much and his family was fraying at the seams and I just remember him trying so hard to handle things the best he could with that understated irony of his and just feeling so terribly for him. There was that thing with the guy in the elevator that he just let die, I don't remember what became of that ...
I love so much that Mark is really just Some Guy trying to do his job well while having normal Some Guy things like a wife and kids and basketball breaks. He's smart, decisive, dedicated, compassionate, a good teacher, and truly a deserving leader.
I know that Jeanie had at least one great story, which of course is the HIV story. I'm actually struggling to recall much before that, so that'll be fun.
I just ... I remember having such complex reactions to Kerry, and all these years later that has registered in my memory as love. I love Kerry, warts and all. You could feel so bad for her while simultaneously hate what she was saying or doing, and I do think she learned things over time. She was an outsider, a party pooper, ambitious and career-driven, a disabled lesbian, oil to Doug Ross' water. She was not easy to love, and so I loved her. Also, she was ER Mom. Love you, Mom!
I also loved Kim/Kerry. They felt so real and human and not simply an "issues" story. I find myself not recalling much of her relationship afterward, so looking forward to seeing if it is a worthy follow-up.
I loved Mark/Susan. They were such easy friends, so natural and believable together, so bright and breezy and (mostly) supportive and wonderful. I think they would have made a fine endgame, it was so easy to want good things for each of them, and what an unforgettable, lovely and bittersweet moment when she left Chicago on that train.
For all that though, I liked Mark with Elizabeth. It's true there wasn't the same will-they-won't they (and I remember feeling like her thing with Peter ended rather abruptly) but their domesticity was very sweet and she was a kick-ass character, strong and funny.
Romano was ... Problematic ... but his bond of some sort with Elizabeth was probably the best thing about his character.
I remember feeling that Peter was shafted, but that said he did last 8 years and I remember some good stories with his mother and sister, work vs parenthood, the custody battle, and of course (of course) his evolving dynamic with Carter.
Seriously though. Benton/Carter.
And on the topic of BroTPs: Mark/Doug!
There's something about the two most ambitious characters being Peter, a black man, and Kerry, a woman, that I kinda love.
Upon reflection, it seems to me that at least some of my affinity for Susan and Abby have to do with their family stories--particularly, having to deal with flawed family members, walking the line between loving and enabling, battling the desire to hope because of the need to protect against disappointment. It's ... interesting? ... because I don't have any deadbeat family members or family members who refuse to take responsibility for their illnesses, but something about how they use sarcasm to deal with life resonates with me, even though Susan in my head was a sunny character while Abby was a little black raincloud.
I loved Abby. Abby was a hot mess, a human disaster, a trashfire. Abby was strong, but also a coward. Abby was full of contradictions, Abby mistook self-abnegation for independence, Abby was only happy when it rained. Abby was hard to love, and so I loved her.
There was something about Abby/Luka that I found compulsively watchable. Something probably having to do with being really messed up and dysfunctional and full of maladaptive habits, but nevertheless wanting love like any other human being. There was a brooding intensity and understatedness to them that I remember just eating up. I was an undercover emo kid, what can I say.
That said, there was a phase in which he was truly insufferable (which I know was them taking a page out of the Doug Ross book ... but he isn't Doug Ross, even though he was brought on as a direct replacement). I'm curious if, on my rewatch, it will feel like an organic arc given how sweet, patient, gentlemanly and sensitive I recall him being at the start. Oh tragic little meow meow.
The final scene between Carol and Luka is so etched in my brain. "Because I'm still in love with him. I've been in love with him since I was 23 years old. He's everything to me. I feel complete when I'm with him and I feel empty when we're apart. He's the father of my children, and he's my soulmate." Yes, Doug was a manbaby and yes I was so hurt on Carol's behalf that he left her for Seattle, but really Doug/Carol were the Truth. You bought their connection so thoroughly and George Clooney's chemistry with Juliana Margulies was critical to that.
I remember thinking that Peter/Cleo's chemistry was nothing in particular to write home about (you know, not bad, but not special) ... but hell if they weren't beautiful together. Michael Michelle was just so stunning.
I really thought that they were heading for a lot of yummy Carter-denying-his-feelings-for-med-student-Lucy angst, which I was so there for. But I can't deny that what ended up happening (you know ...) was unforgettable television.
On that note, Carter was never the same after That. There's such a sad lost innocence about his character, given how earnest and caring and even hapless he was at the start. That's not necessarily a bad direction to go, narratively speaking, but one would hope for some eventual hard-won optimism for him all the same.
And yeah, at some point ER became darker and soapier, but I honestly have good memories of a few of those years, before becoming bored.
Like, another scene seared into my brain is Maggie Wyczenski turning on a dime and going postal right in the middle of the ER, screaming "I'm leaving! I'm leaving! I'm leaving! Iiii'm leaving!" and "You're my daughter you bitch!". God did Sally Field earn that Emmy or did she earn that Emmy. I wouldn't want to have missed out on that story, for all that it was such a downer.
Apparently Sam, Ray, Archie, and Tony came on more or less when Neela did, but she's the only one I remember. How'd that happen? Though I can't say I remember her stories, so there is that.
I remember watching with my sophomore year roommate the night that Romano freaking lost his arm to a helicopter. It was crazy. And I really thought it couldn't get any crazier, but then, as you know ...
The look of the show really changed from beginning to end, which, given that it lasted fifteen years, is probably to be expected. But I remember most the constantly moving camera in so many of the medical emergency scenes, and I hope that doesn't go away.
Mark's daughter and Peter's son were impossibly cute. Impossibly cute. So so cute. So so so so so cute.
Speaking of Chicago in the 90s, goddamn do y'all remember how incredible the Bulls were? I don't know why I'm putting that in this post, but I guess I am.
Carter/Jing Mei were such great friends, they never stopped being competitive with each other but they nevertheless grew up together and I love that the show never hooked them up.
I don't recall quite why but I feel like Doug and his dad were reminiscent of Riker and his dad from Star Trek. I don't know.
Okay yeah that's all for now.

TEAM THUNDERDOME.
TWO TEAMS ENTER. TUMBLR VOTES. ONE TEAM LEAVES. TRIAL BY COMBAT. TO THE DEATH. VICTORY OR SOVNGARDE.
The Rules:
Fights will occur over the course of ONE WEEK, quarter 1 begins JUNE 1ST, 2024 at 12:00 AM MIDNIGHT EDT (UTC-04:00).
Multiple fights happen across one week.
ONLY 3 to 4 team members per team. 2 is too few, 5 is almost cheating. If a team has more than 4 members, some will have to wait in the stands (looking at you, Scooby-Doo and Tally Hall).
Tumblr poll will determine the winner of an individual fight via emotional support and gracious cookie donations.
Majority Wins. Whether or not a team would canonically win or lose the fight does not matter, only the number of votes.
Single Elimination.
Outside of the rules listed above, anything goes. Reblog a fight to get your friends on your side.
Propaganda is fair game. If you know perhaps a little too much about one of the teams and want to explain why your team should win, please submit an in-depth propaganda post to the blog homepage.
Spread the word! Your favorite might win! (Or not! I just run this thing!)

Speedometer - Lockdown Sessions - Ukraine Crisis Appeal - looking for info on their forthcoming Funk Sessions albums, I came across this EP they put out a year ago
Given the horrific scenes that we see daily coming from Ukraine, we have decided to donate all the money we receive from sales of the Lockdown Sessions tracks (whether purchased as a package or individually) to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal - donate.redcross.org.uk/appeal/ukraine-crisis-appeal This collection of 3 recordings were arranged remotely by the band whilst the whole world was in Covid-19 lockdown. The idea of musicians performing remotely via zoom became the norm quickly for many and for Speedometer we felt we wanted to develop a more global sound to these tunes particularly as travel was no longer an option. Each of the compositions brings our core funk sound but blended with influences from around the world from New Orleans, Turkey to India. 1. KASHMIR – composed by Leigh Gracie – Brass arr. Dave Land 2. SATCHMO’S STOMP - GUMBA YA YA composed by Leigh Gracie – Brass arr. Dave Land 3. TURKISH DELIGHT - composed by Dave Land Leigh Gracie - Guitar Chris Starmer - Drums Richard Hindes – Bass James Junior – Vocals / rap Matt Wilding – Percussion Matt Hodges – Keybords / Hammond Simon Jarrett - Tenor Sax Dave Land – Trumpet & Flugel Special Guest Musicians Stephen Wilcock - Baritone Sax and Flute on KASHMIR Mark Brenner - Sitar on KASHMIR Steve Green – Drums on TURKISH DELIGHT John Elliott – Sousaphone on SATCHMO’S STOMP Neil Robinson - Drums on SATCHMO’S STOMP

Richard Fierro at his home on Monday. Daniel Brenner for The New York Times
Dave Philipps writing for The New York Times:
“An Army Veteran Says He Went Into ‘Combat Mode’ to Disarm the Gunman”
Richard M. Fierro, who served for 15 years in the military, said he was at Club Q in Colorado Springs with his family, and took down the man who killed five people.
“COLORADO SPRINGS — Richard M. Fierro said he was at a table in Club Q with his wife, daughter and friends on Saturday, watching a drag show, when the sudden flash of gunfire ripped across the nightclub. His instincts from four combat deployments as an Army officer in Iraq and Afghanistan instantly kicked in. Fight back, he told himself.
In an interview at his house, where his wife and daughter were still recovering from injuries, Mr. Fierro, 45, who left the Army in 2013 as a major, according to military records, described charging through the chaos at the club, tackling the gunman and beating him bloody with the gunman’s own gun.
‘I don’t know exactly what I did, I just went into combat mode,’ Mr. Fierro said, shaking his head. ‘I just know I have to kill this guy before he kills us.’
... The death toll could have been much higher, officials said on Sunday, if patrons of the bar had not stopped the gunman.
... When the shooting started, Mr. Fierro said, he hit the floor, pulling a friend down with him. As bullets sprayed, he saw the gunman move through the bar toward a door leading to a patio where dozens of bar patrons had fled. Mr. Fierro, who served in the Army for 15 years, said he raced across the room, grabbed the gunman by a handle on the back of his body armor, pulled him to the floor and jumped on top of him.
...‘I grabbed the [pistol] out of his hand and just started hitting him in the head, over and over,’ Mr. Fierro said.
... As the fight continued, he said, he yelled for other club patrons to help him. A man grabbed the rifle and moved it away to safety. A drag dancer stomped on the gunman with her high heels. The whole time, Mr. Fierro said, he kept pummeling the shooter’s head while the two men screamed obscenities at each other.
...Mr. Fierro, who owns a local brewery, said that on combat deployments in the Army, he had been shot at and had seen roadside bombs shred trucks in his platoon. His record shows that he was awarded the Bronze Star twice. The experiences of combat still haunt him, he said, and the psychological and physical toll of the deployments were why he left the Army.
He said he never thought he would have to deal with that kind of violence at home. ‘I was done with war,’ he said.”

Just so you know, if we don’t get hellcheer endgame next season, I’m blaming youffie for getting my hopes up
Lol same. Youffie's eternal optimism and Sparks' pushing the time travel angle has got me convinced that we're not totally delusional in thinking there's a chance they come back.
Also...the way both Joe and Grace have acted every time it's brought up is SUS. Like if you compare it to the way Dave Harbour talked about Hop "dying", only for him to be brought back. Or the way Matthew Modine has talked about Brenner being dead in the latter half of S4 and how he would come back if they asked him to.
All I know is this summer is going to be *bananas*. They're going to be busy going to cons, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that they could film cameos for a week or two in the fall.

The bad hits just keep on coming. 36 hours after Belzer, Rick Newman, the owner for Catch a Rising Star, joins him in Heaven. Here are the notes from my interview with him in January, 2017, when I was writing a piece on Freddie Prinze’s Tonight Show spot for New York Magazine....
(RICK NEWMAN)
Club opened December 18, 1972. We opened with a birthday party for Rocky Graziano. I knew I need a gimmick to open to get press. A friend of mine knew Rocky. He had a pizza place on 30th and 2nd. I got a press agent, Gene Webber, through Freddie Roman. Jimmy Cannon came. Jake LaMotta was there.
I had auditions. Fair amount of singers and comedians. Dave Jonas and I got close. He had just signed Freddie. Would I put him up? This was quite quickly after we opened. He might have been 18. You knew what he had right from the start. He was good from the git-go. Great poise. He used to work out. I put him up in primetime.
A typical show in those days was Bill Mahru emceed, then Richard Belzer, Billy Crystal, Freddie, Patti Benatar, Brenner and Andy Kaufmann.
He had all the ingredients to become a star. He was good looking, charming, and had a big personality.
Freddie, Brenner and I got really close. Spent a lot of time together. My father was Hungarian as well.
Jonas's other acts, Freddie Roman, Dick Capri, Billy Baxter, would come in late from their hotel gigs in their tuxes and go up late and kibbitz.
Right away, the bookers from shows came in. I was the new kid on the block. Craig Tennis came in from the Tonight Show. He saw him a few times. Brenner really helped him with his sets.
Any time there was a comic on Carson, we put a TV in the bar and took a break to watch the shot. That night was the perfect storm. He was great looking, he was ethnic, he had worked on his set so he was calm and cool. He was so ready for that Carson shot. And the audience was on fire. Sammy Davis Jr. and Johnny were hysterical during his set and they saw that.
James Komack was working on "Chico and the Man" at the time, and after that, that was it.
(I know I ran this a couple of weeks ago, but this is a better version. And given the news, bears repeating....)

Theory of a Deadman Unplugged Tour Coming to Capitol Theatre
Theory of a Deadman brings their Unplugged Tour to Wheeling’s Capitol Theatre on November 17th. The hard rockers will be joined by Saint Asonia and Cory Marks. Pre-sale tickets are available beginning Wednesday, July 17th at 10 am with the password CAPITOL. Tickets are on sale Friday, July 19th at 10 am. Tickets are available at CapitolTheatreWheeling.com, the WesBanco Arena Box Office or by calling 304-233-7000. With sky-high hooks, riffs as thick as a 2x4, rumbling grooves, and a razor-sharp sense of humor, Theory Of A Deadman have quietly persisted as an unapologetic, unbreakable, and undeniable hard-rock force with major multiplatinum hits and countless sold out shows in each of the past two decades. Jamming together in basements throughout high school, the band burst out of their small hometown of North Delta, British Columbia with the self-titled, Theory of a Deadman, during 2002. In addition to the double-platinum breakthrough album Scars & Souvenirs and gold-certified The Truth Is… , they have notched a procession of hits, including the gold-certified “All Or Nothing,” “Bitch Came Back,” and “Lowlife,” platinum-certified “Angel,” “Hate My Life,” and “Not Meant To Be,” double-platinum “Bad Girlfriend,” and triple-platinum “RX (Medicate).” As the biggest smash of their career this far, the latter marked their third #1 on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart and garnered a nomination for “Rock Song of the Year” at the iHeartRadio Music Awards. They have logged two Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200. In 2020, Say Nothing landed at #2 on the Billboard Alternative Albums Chart and #3 on the Rock Albums Chart. Plus, it earned praise from American Songwriter, Billboard, and Classic Rock Magazine who awarded it “4-out-of-5 stars.” Now, the award-winning quartet—Tyler Connolly , Dave Brenner , Dean Back , and Joey Dandeneau —once again deliver a barrage of anthems, beginning with the single “Dinosaur” and more to come. Saint Asonia united hard rock, Adam Gontier (vocals, guitar) and Mike Mushok (lead guitar) luminaries under a new banner, joined by Gontier (bass) and Cody Watkins (drums). Respectively, Gontier and Mushok had reached stratospheric heights in Three Days Grace and Staind, topping charts, packing venues, and selling millions of records. Read the full article
