more than anything I am begging for there to be no timeskip between s2 and s3 of the gilded age because I NEED to see bertha and agnes being the absolute worst to one another during a larian courtship, I think they would enjoy it and I KNOW I would enjoy it
#the gilded age#bertha russell#agnes van rhijn#i just think they are two people who love to say horrible things to each other#and who also love when someone is saying horrible things to them#because it gives them social permission to be as bitchy back as they want to be#(COMPLIMENTARY!!!!)#thinking abt this is the only thing that distracts me from the angst of the incoming GeorgeBertha fight julian fellows you must give me this

marian feeling backed into a corner trying to pass of tears of desperation as tears of joy literally men should be forbidden from proposing
#also it's so obvi marian and larry are endgame#cousin dashiell had a good rep up until the moment he said marian wasn't a real teacher anyway and the poor people could wait#dump him mar#i'm sure she will but i guess some time has to pass for it to be socially acceptable#i just feel so sorry for her#the gilded age

I understand why people speculate about Bertha's reaction to Larian, because Bertha has been the one who has proved herself to be meddlesome when it comes to her children's love lives so far, but honestly the one who could end being an real obstacle to them is Agnes. I was rewatching s2ep1 today and Agnes is so snobbish towards the Russells that she doesn't even condescend to wish them a happy Easter when she comes across them in church. I am not saying it's certain that Bertha isn't going to disapprove of the match as well, but I think we can expect Agnes to have an equally, if not more, adverse reaction to Larry/Marian.
#the gilded age#bertha russell#agnes van rhijn#we don't know yet what Bertha's plans would have been for Larry but she would probably want him to marry into an Old Money family#and Marian's pedigree might not be as high as it could be#but it would certainly force Agnes + Ada to socialize with her which I think might appeal to her#plus she likes Marian#I dunno I'm cautiously optimistic about Bertha's reaction but I could be wrong#I think Bertha might disapprove of Marian working though

Honestly, as much as a love the Gilded Age and glitz glamor of the wealth it shows...what has really caught my attention is the plotline unions and mills
I am once again starting my campaign for Hollywood to create a mini series based on the Progressive era
And I want it as dark, gritty, a realistic as possible.
#my life-long obsession has been the progressive era#so many good things occurred but so many people and populations were left out of the conversation/legal changes#I truly think the progressive era was top 5 most important times in American social and legal history#probs only next to the Civil War and the Great Depression#Civil Rights movement and the 1970s movements which were inspired by the civil rights moment#HBO honestly would be able to do this imo#they did a great job with this and with John Adams#I'd love to see it set in the Midwest#like in Detroit or Chicago#the gilded age#historical drama#historical drama tv#hbo#the progressive era#not hetalia#american history#pro union

Futures Made of Virtual Insanity...
Every few decades, there's a new technological something or the other.
Some innovation, something to wow.
Something brand new.
An iron lung.
A shiny new space suit.
Gilded wings.
An iPod.
A Walkman.
A Discman.
A radio.
A microwave.
A television.
A computer.
LCD, HD.
4K, 8K.
Google Glass, Metaverse.
AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Mail.
Netscape Navigator, Geocities, Angelfire.
Sidekick, iPhone.
3G, 4G, 5G.
Text messages, Wifi.
Xbox, Playstation, NES, Atari.
Have you figured out yet how fucking fake, forced, contrived & scripted it all is?
Do you really think they haven't developed a battery for cell phones yet that can last a week? A month?
Did you know that plastic is actually extremely durable yet 9 billion tons of disposable plastic has been produced since the 1940s?
Why do you think that is?
Do you actually think they give us new technology when its invented?
Are you aware we still haven't figured out how ancient Egypt built the pyramids?
If we're so technologically advanced, why haven't we built our own pyramids?
HD or high definition has actually been around since at least the 1990s if not earlier.
The technology for supersonic commercial flights has been available since the 1970s.
What's presented as new & shiny was actually invented millennia ago by ancient Egyptians. Who were themselves aliens.
They are stealing from ancient Egyptian technology then presenting it to you as new and impressive.
They release a bit at a time to the public literally thousands of years after the original inventions to great fanfare & money.
They have had the ability to clone, gene splice.
Human experimentation.
Interspecies hybridization.
Everything in X Files represented truth.
Government lies, purchasing technology from aliens in exchange for humans that were then harvested for their DNA & experimented on for biological warfare.
Every age is unprecedented...until the next age.
Don't you see how fucking contrived that is?
Every age is unrivaled and revolutionary...until it is surpassed, sometimes a mere twenty years later, by a new and unrivaled revolutionary age.
Wash, rinse, repeat every few decades.
Still, you don't see a pattern?
Skunkworks at Lockheed Martin "developed" stealth aircraft with cloaking capabilities in the 90s.
All of this was stolen from ancient Egypt.
Flip phones, smartphones, iPhones.
Dial up, wifi, 3G, 4G, 5G.
So, what will 10G be like?
HD, LCD. 4K, 8K.
What will 16K be like? What about 32K? What about 48K?
Have you figured out how fucking fake & contrived & scripted all this bullshit technology is?
The metaverse has existed for literal decades.
They stole all of this from ancient Egypt and then present it to the public at intervals of a few decades as "technological advancements", "innovations" and "wizardry".
Snowcrash spoke of the metaverse back in the 90s.
Ready Player One depicted it in film two decades after Snowcrash.
Facebook developed it "in real life" a few years ago then paused it.
The covid shut down was the soft reset for AI & robotics which is when they are going to unleash the metaverse, AR & VR & the elimination of at least 80% of all current jobs.
They stole all of this and they keep it hidden then release it to the public bit by bit at regular, predictable, timed & scripted intervals as "brand new technology".
Haven't you noticed any obvious patterns yet?
The present is always ever evolving and what is considered cutting-edge today, just five years from now, will be considered the "distant past".
Why would anyone watch TV in 8K? Thank god we have 32K now!
Why would a song ever last for 4 minutes? Thank god the average song length is now two minutes.
In just twenty years, two full minutes was lost.
What happens when songs become one minute on average?
What happens when two hour movies are shortened to one hour?
What happens when episodic TV that is a half an hour or an hour becomes TikToks and Youtube Shorts?
What happens when books are no longer printed and published and everything is Audible or its presented in comic book manga style?
Who would ever want to read hundreds of words with no pictures, color, sound or audio?
No matter how many times this cycle is repeated, it is rarely questioned.
Now, there are Smart TVs! And phones! And refrigerators! And ovens! And washing machines!
All interconnected via wireless bluetooth device!
Alexa can tell me if the ingredients I need for my dinner are in my fridge then pre-set my oven for me while I am on the way home from work.
Five years ago is now an eternity.
A four minute song is now an eternity.
Reading a book -- not listening to a book, not reading a manga or comic book which are pictures & words -- reading an actual book with nothing but actual words is becoming an anachronism.
A book, not a tablet -- not staring at a screen, not scrolling, not "tapping" to turn the page.
An actual book, with pages, where you the human, turn the pages of the book with your hand.
Ice Age, Stone Age.
The future's made of virtual insanity...
Ice Age Cometh - Ice Age
Stone Age, heat wave - Stone Age
Informatics - Information Age
Digitization - Digital Age
AI - Age of AI & Robotics
Biohacked Transhuman - Age of Wearables & Implantables
We are all Ozempians & Wegovians - Age of Ozempic & Wegovy
A Revolution for whom? - Industrial Revolution
Modern Stone Age - Postmodern Age
Virtual Insanity - Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality Age
Technolyzed - Technology Age
Death of the Written Word - Age of Typography
Mechanistic Mechanized Humans - Machine Age
Spaced Out - Space Age
Jetting to the Future Past - Jet Age
Cassettes. LPs. VHS. VCR.
Compact discs. Cable TV. DVR. Holograms.
Cloning. DNA splicing. Species hybridization.
Toasters. Freezers. Fax machines. Printers.
Personal computers. Typewriters. Beepers. Pagers.
Google Glass. AR. VR. AI.
Remote controls. Answering machines. Call waiting. Caller ID.
What's the next fake Age in this never ending quest for fake ass futurism & technoworship?
#futurism#future#anti capitalism#socialism#capitalism#consumerism#materialism#overconsumption#technology#obsession#addiction#internet#digitalization#ai#artificial intelligence#robotics#machinery#industrialization#postmodernism#modern life#virtual reality#augmented reality#revolution#transhumanism#ghost in the machine#space exploration#science#the gilded age#petroleum#jet

this is obviously a very premature feeling but like. i want them to keep oscar on the show and i want his scenes to be tolerable to watch and if they go full realism on consequences here i am not really sure what direction they could take it that i would be able to appreciate as an audience member for whom he is blorbo... if he like. loses his job and is ostracized i don't know how they could justify keeping him on the show in a way that is both narratively meaningful and something i am comfortable watching. he does not need to suffer extended social or material punishment.
would rather they somehow magically manage to keep the details in the immediate family and that dynamic changes but his conflict with the society in which he lives is more internal for him — e.g. having to mentally confront what Could have happened to him and his family if ada had not come to the rescue and the thought of that combined with the changed family dynamic/relationship being shameful enough on its own that it changes his mindset and behavior without like. actually ruining his life
but all the people who are like. i want him to lose his job i want George Russell to prevent him from ever working in banking again i want him to be impoverished and humiliated and suicidal etc... could not be me, sorry
#i think it would suck actually if the main gay character's life is ruined and he has a terrible reputation and is beyond social redemption.#because at that point why keep him on the show.#especially when a substantial subset of the audience is going to experience schadenfreude about it.#i do not want anyone fictional or otherwise to be feeling schadenfreude about oscar sorry!!!!#no schadenfreude allowed.#the gilded age spoilers#i literally will not be able to handle it if there's on screen gossip about the situation at all it will make me want to die#also like. the rest of the family does not deserve that either and i am not interested in literally any of this going full tragedy.#if it's problematic of me to want the protagonists of the show i watch to retain their rich people social standing and Not have to#abruptly change their lifestyle then like. sorry not sorry#also while i don't think it's out of character for oscar i think it could have been explained better for the folks at home if social media#is any indication.#& it's not a choice they Had to make either so i reserve the right to be grumpy about them making it if it goes in a direction i dislike.#i am pretty much already at my canonical whump and secondhand embarrassment limit here!

this lady's maid is throwing herself at Mr Russell quite flagrantly
he seems to adore his social-climbing wife so much, she looks a fool
#airy watches the gilded age#Mrs Russell is less a social climber than a social mountaineer#having the gay cousin turn up in outlandishly flamboyant clothes and naming him Oscar was not very subtle of Julian Fellowes#I really want to know what the woman with the superb hats who they all despise but she turns up to everything anyway - what she DID#and what Peggy Scott's legal question is about#I had my heart in my mouth that if Mrs Bauer stole something to pay off her debt the blame would be put on her

one of the central frustrations for me about the inevitable George v Bertha fight in S3 is that it's so unequal. Not in terms of how they view their relationship or their dynamics going into the fight (although, obviously, no matter how much they see each other as equals they still very much live in the unequal 1880s), but that there could never, ever be a flipped version of their situation. Bertha is never going to step over into George's business world and tell him how to do things and even if she was, there's no support for her there (unless she did an entire character turn of being pro union, which, l o l) like there will be for George as Head Of The 1800s Family.
And obviously she's done this specific Duke-based manoeuvre because it was a way to get the specific thing she wanted in the moment, but it's not like she wasn't positioning Gladys in the Duke's sights before that, which as I have said before and will probably say another hundred times before we get to S3, is basically her job as Wealthy Socialite Wife In The 1800s.
And there's just no real recourse for her in the situation. I don't know, I know I'm getting ahead of myself (way, way ahead of myself, given when we can probably expect S3 to air lol), but I can just feel how backed into a corner she's going to be
#the gilded age#dont get it twisted: i firmly believe that if the social structure was flipped and bertha had been in George's position in s2#she would have fired on the unionists herself#she would be doing the triangle shirtwaist factory fire to people every other week#but thats not the social structure and for the purposes of the show it never will be#(also irl those unonists DID get shot at but jf will die before he positions his rich main characters as being Bad People lol)#truly i just have a knee-jerk reaction to people saying she Sold gladys bc im like yeah!! thats what her job is!!#her husband crushes unions and she arranges her childrens marriages!! its the 1880s!!!#anyway best of luck bertha as always i hope you win against all odds and get everything you want

Watson/Collyer's was the worst-kept secret in New York. I laughed last week when he was talking to George about it.
#the gilded age#the gilded age spoilers#Pete Campbell's ancestor is probably pissed his plan failed#Also i haven't checked real ages but Watson doesn't seem old enough to be Flora's father?#And that scene carried no emotional weight whatsoever and I am not sure it was intended to be that flat even with social mores and all#personal

The Gilded Age bringing in Jay Gould as an actual character in s2 after repeatedly stating that George Russell's character and particularly his devotion to his family were based on him is so freaking funny but also kinda makes me wish we would get a showdown of the Russell vs Gould couples in the future seasons... like after the stand off between George and Gould, having Bertha interact with Mrs Gould has SO much potential
#the gilded age#some might think bertha might not want to socialize with her#but she had no problem with henderson#I think she'd do it if it were to help George with his work

This might be a weird question, but from one fic writer to another... Do you have more readers for Gilded on A03 or on Tumblr? Like, views-wise which site gets more per chapter?
It's hard to tell, y'know? Because any number of people could be reading Gilded on tumblr and not interacting with the posts, so I can't say who has the most viewwise. In terms of what I can track (number of likes compared to number of views per chapter) I'd say that Ao3 has more views. However, I think tumblr has more engagement. There are more "tags with comments" and asks here than there are comments on Ao3. Granted, I can't tell how many of those asks are the same person, since a lot are on anon, but at large, yeah, more interaction on tumblr.
#but y'know. tumblr's just better set up for interaction with the author than Ao3 bc tumblr's a social media not an archive#asks#gilded faq
