Gilbert Garcin, philosophical photographer celebrating the human condition, passes at age 90 Conjuring secret worlds and wry magic from miniature sets arranged on his dining room table, the photographer Gilbert Garcin captured a metaphorical landscape in which the beauty and absurdity of human existence played out in clever philosophical tableaux. Garcin’s works offer a compelling alternative to the frenetic digital and political chaos of contemporary life, his quirky and timeless visual puns reminding us that seeking meaning can be an affable, slow joy. Humanity’s attraction to and fear of the unknown was a common theme for Garcin, and the black-coated everyman character in his photographs can often be found gazing inquisitively into a bright abyss, or beyond the ornate picture frame of known existence. On Friday, April 17th, 2020 in Marseille, France, Garcin passed into that mysterious brilliance. His son Philippe Garcin informs us that his father’s journey was as serene as the worlds that he created: “With great sadness, I inform you that my father, Gilbert Garcin, passed away in his sleep, in his 91st year. His life ended at his home, without illness, peacefully.” Garcin spent forty years managing a lamp manufactory in Marseilles; his career as an artist commenced at age 65 when he entered a regional photography contest. Garcin’s irresistible style, experience, and illumination quickly won him international renown. Lisa Sette Gallery has worked with Garcin for a decade, and was to present a one person exhibition entitled “Gilbert Garcin: Existence is Elsewhere” at Paris Photo New York in early April 2020 (now available to view as a virtual exhibition). The gallery’s founder, Lisa Sette, “finds solace in Garcin's elegant work, and the artist’s unique ability to coax such joy from a life fully lived.” #gilbertgarcin #gilbertgarcinphotographe #gilbertgarcintribute #art #contemporaryart #inmemoriam #rip #frenchartist #photography #frenchphotographer https://www.instagram.com/p/B_ONF-DHlHL/?igshid=13o3s0mwysu35
