Reinstalled government disarms putschists in Burkina Faso

The government of President Michel Kafando, who was reinstalled as President on Wednesday, ordered to disarm the unit behind the failed coup. Already on Friday, the Regiment of Presidential Security RSP was disbanded by government decree and the assest of several leaders were frozen on Saturday. The elite presidential guard under the control of General Gilbert Diendere, who has been a security adviser to the ousted President  Blaise Compaore, carried out a coup against the government more than one week ago but soon came under pressure by the international community, street protests and the regular military. After negotiations involving the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), the RSP withdraw to its barracks on Wednesday. It has been reported that Diendere staged the coup as several allies of the ousted President were not allowed to participate in the upcoming elections and as the government discussed plans to disband the RSP. He later called the coup a mistake, saying "we knew the people were not in favour of it. That is why we have given up." According to government figures,at least eleven people were killed and 271 wounded as soldiers of the RSP clashed with protesters in the capital Ouagadougou in the days following the coup.

Burkina Faso's coup leader says he will abide by a deal reached with top African mediators, but warned his men would defend themselves if attacked after the army entered the capital.

General Gilbert Diendere on Tuesday called for troops who entered Ouagadougou overnight seeking a surrender by his elite army unit to leave the city, the AFP news agency reported.

"We do not want to fight but ultimately we will defend ourselves," Diendere warned, nearly a week after his men detained the interim leaders who had been running the country since a popular uprising deposed iron-fisted president Blaise Compaore last October.
