Harrow was learning to be warm.

She squirmed to turn over, stretching out so she could press her back against Gideon's long flank, shoving a pillow in place so she could comfortably stay tucked with her head in the dip between the woman's bicep and breast. Harrowhark's lover (what an odd notion) stirred, the snotty purr of her snore interrupted for a moment.

"Good?" came her voice, loud and slurry with sleep.

"Mmm," Harrow reassured, knowing this for a false awakening. Gideon always slept well, after.

"Mhmhmmhm. Took care'a you good," she chuckled with sleepy lechery.

Harrow huffed, the echo of exasperation wrapping a painful fondness. "Nav, go back to sleep."

Posted the second to last chapter in my Griddlehark fic! A good time to jump on if you like complete works -- the last chapter will be coming out in the next month (probably). 

It’s a speculative post-canon cabin smutfic, heavy on the feelings and exploration of a new relationship and how it intersects with trauma and history. It’s actually heavier on sex in the first half (someone said the scene in chapter 4 “might be the best griddlehark sex scene i’ve ever read?” which is a badge of honour I’m going to wear to my grave) but the last chapter’s going to go out with a bang, too.

The effects of face paint on Harrowhark's psyche

I've now cosplayed Gideon Nav 3 times, with my wife along as Harrow every time. Naturally, this has included full face paint for both of us each time and I have some thoughts.

Let me start by asserting that everything Muir writes in TLT about the face paint is accurate. Rubbing off your lips first, smearing into gray where the black and white meet, the way sweat makes it ooze but not run. I can't say if Muir (a known Homestuck) ever cosplayed as a troll, but I'm positive she tested out the practicality of the skull face paint or otherwise has first hand experience with extensive use of grease paint. Also, the way she describes normal people flinching when they see you is spot on.

I've noticed while putting on the make up that once most of my skin is covered, any flesh tones sticking out start to become unsettling. Specifically, the red/pink of the inner mouth and around the eyes jump out upsettingly. Every time I've done skull paint I find myself meticulously trying to patch over these edges of skin, despite knowing that it's inside skin that Shouldn't Have Make Up On It. Once my face is monochrome, I don't want to be able to see a scrap of real human under there. Smiling, or otherwise opening your mouth wide enough to see the pink, looks UNSETTLING. My own skin causes the uncanny valley effect. You see where this is going. In NtN we learn Harrowhark disassociates often enough that Crux isn't surprised or concerned to see "Harrow" insisting she's someone else. Obviously this is due to her schizophrenia, and perhaps trauma besides. But it doesn't account for every aspect of why Harrow's "like that." On her most lucid days Harrow ignores her body to the point of sweating blood and passing out. She goes entire days without eating. She thinks of herself as a skeleton unfortunately covered in flesh. She sleeps in her paint.

All of which is heinous, but that last one has stuck with me. From age 13-18 I barely glanced down while I showered and whatever I saw I basically blocked out. I wore underwear and a bra under my pajamas to sleep every night. I was going through the wrong puberty, "my body was in open rebellion" as I liked to say at the time, and the only way to cope was to bind it down and pretend it wasn't happening. By Gideon's narration in HtN one gets the impression most nuns of the Ninth are putting their paint on after breakfast and taking it off when they get home. It's not even expected the average person wears it every time they leave the house. But Harrow regularly only takes her paint off in order to redo it. I suspect a combination of being the most brainwashed person in her own cult, knowing how she was conceived, and the regular disassociation make it very difficult for Harrow to conceptualize that she actually lives in a body. If she faced that fact head on she'd have to ask why it so often feels someone else is using her body. She'd have to cope with owning this body, being a part of this body, that was bought with the blood of 200 children who should have been her peers and friends. Instead she pretends it's an object on loan from them. And she does it with 10 layers of black petticoats and so much paint she never has to see her own skin.

Which brings me to the final thing I've noticed wearing full face paint. It dehumanizes you to yourself and everyone around you. I couldn't read my own expressions in a mirror. Even people who understood and were delighted with my cosplay were visibly nervous talking to me. You don't look like a person. Studies have shown that faces wearing heavy make up are ranked as harder to read and perceived as less empathetic. It's a particularly insidious trap of patriarchy that many women find self esteem in wearing make up, while that very act makes everyone around them treat them more callously. And, worst of all, if you stop wearing it once you're used to it, your naked face is shocking. You look sick due to your colors being less bold and the normal small flaws of your face appear unbearably ugly. With all this in mind, Harrow has trapped herself in a feedback loop of not being able to witness her own face and becoming more and more disgusted with the flesh and person underneath whenever she has to glance at it.

Rating how long I think The Locked Tomb characters would last in a zombie apocalypse:

For practical considerations this is a non-necromancy universe and the zombies are walking-dead style (slow and stupid but can very much kill you if you’re being stupid or if there are a lot of them)

Camilla Hect: 10/10. Camilla would make it a solid eight seasons in any zombie show and is effectively the “Michonne” (most badass walking dead character) of the series. She’s practical and silent, and swords are a great weapon for zombies because you won’t attract more of them by making a lot of noise.

Palamedes Sextus: 6/10 ONLY because of Camilla, who refuses to let him die. Without Cam he is a 3/10. He probably ends up killed off by another character or sacrificing himself so that Camilla can escape from a giant horde of zombies. As a plus, his first aid is impeccable so everyone likes him.

Gideon Nav: 7/10. She’s strong and fast but tends to make impulsive decisions, especially when dealing with Harrowhark or any children. She’s your “Daryl Dixon” of the series because she’s scrappy. Makes it longer than she should because she’s a lucky bastard. DO NOT give her a gun because she will start firing it and attract all the zombies.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus: 2/10. The only way this woman is surviving is if she finds her way into a safe compound, and even then she’s so cantankerous that she’s constantly in danger of being thrown out. On the plus side, she and palamedes are the two most likely to find a “cure” or vaccine against the zombies.

Naberius Tern: 0/10. Dies immediately because he walks up to a zombie and makes fun of it.

Coronabeth Tridentarius: 6/10. She survives much longer than she should because other people like her but ultimately gets killed in a self-sacrificing situation.

Ianthe Tridentarius: ?/10. There are too many ways for this to go.

Abigail Pent: 4/10. She stands a decent chance if she makes it into a compound but has few practical skills beyond coercing everyone into working together.

Magnus Quinn: 3/10. Everyone loves him but he has the same factors as Abigail, and if she kicks it he would not make it another 2 hours without her.

Silas Octakiseron: 0/10. He offs himself as soon as he hears about people turning into zombies so he doesn’t get “corrupted.”

Colum Asht: 6/10. He’s a zombie killing machine but he can’t really do anything without a leader so one of the more conniving characters (Ianthe?) uses him as a human shield at some point.

Pyrrha Dve: 8/10. She’s an absolute badass and extremely resourceful. Seeing as she was once a cop, she would quite literally be the “Rick Grimes” of this situation. Fulfills the leadership role beautifully. Probably killed by another character.

see thats the thing i also want the tone of the series to feel earned. its entirely possible that 1) kiriona breaks upon seeing harrow and immediately forgives (or already has forgiven!) her, that 2) it becomes clear all they wanted was to have each other live, then 3) they realize they can continually live for each other like etc etc 19) happy ending. but it seems so tonally distinct from tlt as a whole which has always been about the horrors of love - at best i think theyll acknowledge the reverence between them, but they will never be as close as they wish (harrowhark-and-gideon, gideon-and-harrowhark at last) and if they die holding each other they would act like theyre reswearing the necrocav bond. i would hope they can realize the ridiculousness of the society that programmed them to be so sacrificial but also they Literally cant escape it so

Once again, to celebrate this awesome day, I thought I'd give another shout-out to some more of those wonderful ladies that I alove and admire, both those who hve inspired me for a while now, and those that I just recently discovered ...

IMAN VELLANI. Oh my sweet girl! :3 Exploding onto the scene thanks to the recent acclaimed hit/fan favourite that was the Disney/Marvel Ms. Marvel streaming show, the most adorable geek girl in ALL THE WORLD really got a major, much deserved profile boost (regardless of the problems) thanks to her co-starring return to the role of super-popular young Marvel superhero Kamala Khan in The Marvels. She's a genuine absolute SWEETHEART and she deserves all the success that's surely coming to her.

GIDEON NAV & HARROWHARK NONAGESIMUS. Yup, I have FINALLY gotten round to reading Tamsyn Muir's ridiculously popular sci-fi fntasy novel series The Locked Tomb! It's still early days, I'm only on Gideon the Ninth, but I am ALREADY falling head over heels in love with the story's central duo, the reluctant warrior Gideon, a snarky oversized golden retriever of a woman, and her "hated" charge, Harrow, the scheming, overly-ambitious scion to an ancient clan of intergalactic necromancers, who's a metaphorical vicious little soaked ferret. I love them, they're so adorably dysfunctional ...

AWKWAFINA. For me, one of the funniest people around, this musician, comedian and actress deserves every ounce of success she's earned for herself. I mostly know her for her acting, having been a fan ever since she was in Ocean's 8, since showing up in a raft of great roles in the likes of Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings, Raya & the Last Dragon, Crazy Rich Asians and Swan Song, although she's REALLY hitting her stride now, showing up in REALLY BIG stuff like Renfield, Quiz L\ady and, now, the incoming (and long-awaited) Kung Fu Panda 4.

TATIANA SUAREZ. Perhaps the most incredible sportswoman I have come across in a good long while, this one is a TRUE INSPIRATION REVELATION. A strong up-and-coming contender for UFC World Champion, she's been through SO MUCH in her life to get where she is now, having had her teenage dreams of being an Olympic Gold Medal wrestler dashed after an accident during training led to the discovery of a burgeoning case of thyroid cancer. Fighting off the condition, she then fought her way back after embracing judo and then mixed martial arts, before AGAIN suffering a debilitating neck injury which NEARLY ended her sporting career again, forcing her to take another long-term hiatus to get back into fighting shape ... just as COVID hit. Now she's back again, fighting fit and better than ever, hungry for that next chance and looking like she's definitely gonna get it this time ...

SINEAD O'CONNOR. The last 13 months have been really tough, we've had to say goodbye to some truly wonderful people, but one in particular REALLY HURT. The music industry lost a true GEM with the passing of this genuine GODDESS, the Irish singer-songwriter best known for her INSANELY popular cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U, although those in the know recognise that she was ONE HELL of a force nature in her own right, courting controversy throughout her career for her outspoken religious and political views. She NEVER backed down on what she believed, and earned my undying respect and admiration for it.

FLORENCE PUGH. A completely amazing young actress who's had a trily ASTOUNDING rise to fame in recent years, I've be a fan of Flo's ever since she broke out in a MASSIVE WAY in the twisted psychological drama Lady Macbeth. She's blown us all away since, lighting up the screen in the likes of midsommar, Don't Worry Darling, Oppenheimer and, now, Dune, Part Two, but now, for me she will ALWAYS be Yelena Belova, the true successor to the MCU's Black Widow mantle.

MIZU. One of my favourite female characters of the past year (although I'm sure she would balk at actually bringing up her gender), the titular lead protagonist of Netflix' wild runaway success new animated series Blue Eye Samurai is a genuinely fascinating and intoxivating character, who prompts profound debate about gender roles and personal identity while kicking arse in SPECTACULAR FASHION indeed in feudal Japan.

TEYONAH PARRIS. Definitely one of THE MOST AMAZING African American actresses coming up right now, this young lady is definitely earning her breakout star status. Having come up through sterling turns in the likes of Dear White People, Chi-Raq, If Beale Street Could Talk and Candyman, before finally making good on all that promise with high profile lead turns in THey Cloned Tyrone and her ongoing role as MCU superhero MOnica Rambeau/Photon in Wandavision and The Marvels.

BILLIE EILISH. What do I REALLY need to say about one of the most popular and astoundingly unique musical artists of the moment? Ever since her breakthrough at just THIRTEEN YEARS OLD with her wildly successful first single, Ocean Eyes, which became a massive runaway smash on Youtube, this incredibly talented young singer songwriter has consistently impressed with ever release, entirely deserving her immense success with an amazing debut EP and two subsequently BRILLIANT albums. She keeps going from strength to strength, and at just 22 years old is only just BEGINNING what's sure to be a MONSTER of a career ...

KITTY O'NEIL. A true legend in cinema, even though most of us have NEVER actually seen her face, this little lady was one of the GREATEST stuntwomen and racers of all time, and a MASSIVE inspiration throughout her life as well. Despite going deaf due to illness during childhood, Kitty still went on to become a record-breaking racing driver and professional stunt performer, probably best known for having doubled Linda Cart in Wonder Woman and Lyndsey Wagner in The Bionic Woman. It's a genuine mystery why Hollywood hasn't made a biopic about her yet ...

HOLGA KILGORE. Probably my ABSOLUTE favourite fictional female protagonist of 2023, the badass barbarian lady from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was a pure, unapologetic JOY, thanks in no small part to a wonderfully game turn from Michelle Rodriguez. Holga's just an absolute sweetheart, fully capable of decimating a whole room full of big, dangerous men with her bare hands without ever losing her gentle kindness, simple, honest innocence and unswerving loyalty. TRULY the MVP warrior tank any adventuring party wants in their corner ...

SIOUXSIE SIOUX. Truly one of alternative rock's true, all time GOATs, the lead singer of one of goth's greatest and most important bands, Siouxsie & the Banshees, is a singular master of haunting, ethereal vocals and a genuine style ICON who lent her look and manner to a whole GENERATION of scary young women ...

SABINE WREN & SHIN HATI. While my favourite Star Wars offering of 2023, the opening season of the Ahsoka series, was, all round, just SO GREAT for me, there was one particular element that just stuck with me above ANYTHING ELSE - the season-long rivalry between Ahsoka's troubled Mndalorian apprentice Sabine and Dark Jedi student Shin. They raged, continuously tried to kill each other and endlessly traded smouldering looks of hate that bordered on OBSESSION ... all while genuinely SIMMERING with barely restrained sexual tension. They made the whole fandom FERAL, myself includced. #wolfwren indeed ...

BRODY DALLE. And last, but BY NO MEANS LEAST, a little more personal self-indulgience ith one of my greatest rock-fan super crushes, namely the awesome Aussie lead singer/guitarist of supercool punk bands the Distillers and Spinnerette. Started off the year with a gross threesome! I think Adam should suffer <3 This originally started differently with more about Adam walking home, but it was so BORING that I cut the entire thing. Honestly loved writing this, and I hadn’t realised that other people enjoyed it as well until I realised it was being recced. I tried really hard to “get” Benson’s voice as I was writing this, I found it hard to describe his sing-song way of speaking. I forced Becky to watch A Castle for Christmas last year, and unfortunately, she thinks it’s the best movie ever made. We came up with a very in-depth backstory for Thomas and Myles’ relationship that hits all our buttons (Scotland, repressed homosexuality, teenagers rutting all over the place) so I had to write a fic for the Battleship Exchange. I loveeee writing older men tackling their sexuality and getting their rocks off.

Another fic where I had a VIBE in my head that I was really trying to pin down - Hooper sweating in the bar and catching sight of Brody and realising he’s in love. I also think the title works really well, Selachimorpha is the scientific name for sharks and I remember my beloved poetry professor telling me to always use latin/scientific words in my work. Shout out to *REDACTED*, sorry for not replying to your facebook messages.

I wrote SO MUCH for Fic In A Box, but I just had to choose these softer world inspired panels. I feel like I worked the hardest on these - I practised first with some Hoffman panels, did a lot of editing of screenshots to create new scenes between Lawrence and Jill, and dusted off my old Photoshop skills! It was also SO MUCH FUN, I loved picking the quotes for the Lawrence/John relationship.

December:

No official December fic yet! I’ve written fic for several exchanges that will hopefully go live this month, so we’ll have to wait and see. ✌️
