so, old news obvious news blah blah, but i keep seeing people not getting this about my girl gideon nav so have to say: i think at first blush, people get the impression that Harrow’s got all the convolutions and layers and hidden vulnerability whereas gideon wears her heart on her sleeve and is just brazenly herself (a loveable rowdy himbo) & that’s the contrast. and yes, that’s there, but that’s not all. that dynamic itself is a part of their mutual (codependent) front, and like everything else in this book, it gets peeled back.
i think the real contrast is that they’ve both got masks, and those masks are complimentary. they’re both kids who never got a childhood. they grew up tortured in the same place from very different angles with no one but each other to butt heads against. they both had to play-act grown up versions of themselves with few models for what a well-adjusted adult even looked like. so it’s cartoonish. gideon is the plucky hero of her own adventure story that will totally have a happy ending some day, far far away from her nemesis whom she’s totally not in love with. harrow meanwhile (to grossly oversimplify) has to imagine herself as someone cruel and cold enough to cope with being alive at the price of 200 other people. these two things fit very well together. gideon can play the hero to harrow’s villain, and harrow can enact cruelty toward gideon to make herself feel strong and mean (and generally just to vent anguish). the way they hate one another is a kind of mutual protection - it re-enforces the self-image that each of them needs to get through the day. but that’s the coping mechanism. harrow the ruthless bones overlord. gideon the hapless swords idiot, who thinks of nothing but tiddies & sweet sweet vengence (harrow’s corpse in various states of disgrace ) all day. and behind that they’re both tearing apart at the seems beneath caricatures of themselves that are deeply unsustainable and neither of them feels safe letting on the extent to which that’s the case. their hearts are a goddamned mess. neither of them is wearing that shit on their sleeve. so yeah, there’s a lot more to gideon than being a swords himbo but that’s not the wild thing. the wild thing is she’s so convincing that she somehow manages to sell people on her no braincells act while being the pov character of entire first novel.
-
#[whispers] she doesn't want you to know she has enough braincells to feel trauma]#gideon nav#gideon the ninth#tlt#the locked tomb#come on guys#the himbo act is from the heart and that's why it's so convincing#but she's got a lot of other things going on and the scary thing is#she's capable of burrying them much deeper than harrow has ever managed to bury anything#if she ever decided to go Full Awful it would be truly terrifying & i think we're supposed to Feel That#[spreads hands at both gid's parents]#she's very like both of them and that should be an uncomfortable thought

*clears throat*
Well, my friend, my Tumblr moot, my fellow traveller, let me exposit in a slightly spoilery way what GtN is about from the lense of "abuse, the abuser, and the survivor of abuse." I may get a little weird, but The Locked Tomb is an obscenely complicated series and GtN is only a small slice of the lore pie and so it's hard to ONLY talk about that one book.
I am also, it turns out, just as much of a Gidion-kin as I'm an Adora-kin. I relate to her so very much that some of my own experiences have more or less transposed onto my mental map of the character. (Where Adora is Lawful Stupid, Gideon is Chaotic Stupid, and I'm just waiting for a Neutral Stupid butch lesbian himbo to step up in modern queer media to complete the triad.)
Remember, I did warn you about spoilers. Here there be dragons:
Gideon - G-money is a super-fit little troublemaker whose worst crime was being born. Quite literally, she becomes indentured to a cult because she happened to come out of the incubator on their property. Someone (probably Harrow's parents, and weren't THEY horrible pieces of work, more on them momentarily) decided that just because they didn't let an infant die that somehow she owed them. Gideon became the Designated Victim of the entire damn cult. If ever there was anything to pin culpability on anyone (and even a few things that couldn't be blamed on a single soul) it was time to Blame Gideon. It's no surprise that Gideon grew up knowing nothing but being abused in that environment, like happens so often in the case of the Designated Victim, she internalized the abuse. She was not now and would never be worthy of anyone's time, love, or attention. Acts of Service became her entire way of showing care and support to anyone because she feels she must earn the right to even be in the same room as anyone else, let alone someone she actually cares about. Part of why she connects so well with Magnus and Abigail is because they're so much like the ideal of what she thinks her parents were supposed to be, but she distances herself from them until too late because she doesn't feel she could ever earn what they give so freely. Gideon got severely messed up, let's take a look at her mother figures for a hot second:
Wake - Genocidal terrorist ready to kill her own baby to have even a chance to kill God. So full of hate that even as a ghost she can only scream the name of the man who tried to win her love in anger.
Pelleamena (Harrow's mother) - Only ever viewed Gideon with loathing, then fear when the child refused to die. The matriarch of a death cult she didn't start and so didn't understand its fundamental nature or teachings, she only ever saw in Gideon the literal apocalypse but had no idea what that meant, and since this was the matriarch, everyone followed her example
Aiglamene - Disabled war vet without the foggiest clue how to be a role model, much less a parental figure. She may like Gideon but she raises a girl who just wanted a mommy like a drill sergeant trains a soldier in boot camp
Gideon coming out with anything even remotely related to empathy for her fellow humans and a sense of compassion for others is a fucking miracle.
Consider also that for her entire life up until Canaan House, she had only ever seen one other human being younger than her, and the only other "kid" most of her life was a boy several years older than her. She had no peers, and not in a good way. Everything she ever learned, everything she ever knew, was through the lens of what her abusers wanted her to know, and that includes her co-victim in abuse, Harrow.
Harrowhark - So let's say your parents are cult leaders and they manage to convince their entire flock to kill every last one of their kids on the day they were going to do the nasty because that was the only way they could guarantee the cult leaders would be able to have a child.
This is what Harrow was told as a bedtime story from when she was old enough to understand words.
Imagine how very fucked up this makes a kid; you're told that you are expected to be the absolute very best of all the everything because if you aren't, then those 200+ children all died for nothing.
This is, again, something that Harrow had driven into her since she could remember anything. And then little Harrow turns out to be the genius everyone thought she'd be, the perfect scion of the cult, and now she's got expectations. Oh, and she's neurodivergent. In a cult. If someone can convince you that Harrow wasn't going to snap, I have a few financial opportunities I'd like to discuss with you regarding bridges.
And these two grow up together. They're best friends and arch enemies and everything in between to each other. They would never be as close as siblings, they know each other too well.
And then, and then, A̵ͥ̏͑ͤ͏̧͖͠Ṅ̛̩̓ͥ͑̕͝͠D̸̯̎̎͂͘͡͞ ̀͝҉̫͢͡Ț̷̡̢͛ͨ͞Ḩ̷͚̅͜͡E̓̓̇̔͏̷̨͉͠N̴̶͔ͬ̕̕...Harrow's parents commit the ultimate, final acts of abuse they could do to both Gideon and Harrow and commit suicide, explicitly telling Harrow that it's her and Gideon's fault. Harrow is there in the room with them as they hang themselves and they've got a noose all ready for her, too.
And then, and then, poor, sweet Golden Retriever Gideon stumbles onto the scene as Harrow is still reeling from watching her parents die.
These two were never, ever, ever going to NOT be completely fucked up.
And then they get a mission from God.
Quite literally. You know that cult that Harrow's parents run but didn't found? Yeah, the guy who did (at least indirectly) Calls Them On A Mission. (Who had "Mormonism Reference" on their bingo card?)
Wanna know what that mission is? They have to do a series of tests, trials to get the knowledge of how to become a lyctor. Gideon must become Harrow's Cavalier, the guardian to a necromancer. They have to become so intimate, so familiar with each other that they have no choice but to spill their deepest, darkest thoughts to each other. Everything they were keeping to themselves because they only ever saw the other as their own personal tormentor had to be divulged, every bit of guilt, every hidden fear, every masked pain had to be confessed to each other. And they have to do this in the middle of a murder investigation.
And once they become so intimate they can practically reach each other's thoughts, Gideon is supposed to die so Harrow can eat her soul.
And this was their official, God-sent mission. (And "God" makes no bones...heh, about it in Harrow the Ninth, he intended for the cavaliers to die and for the necromancers to commit the unpardonable sin of consuming the cavalier's souls.)
As you'll get into the series and the fandom, you're going to encounter people who tell you that Harrow was a horrible abuser to Gideon, that she should be pretty much begging for even a sliver of Gideon's time and go off and die in one of the lyctor trials so Gideon can be rescued by the cohort or something. This sentiment completely misses the foundational fact that Harrow was just as much an abuse survivor as Gideon.
You wanna know who is abusive?
Let's do another list:
God - John Gaius, a.k.a. - The God Emperor of Mankind. The list of his dirty laundry is so long it can't be easily synopsized, but for the sake of this post I'll limit it to just what he does as one of his first acts after finding out he's Gideon's father is to kill a woman in front of her and confess in front of everyone that he lied about the Lyctor process. Murderer, manipulator, mansplainer, and this is Gideon's dear ol' dad.
Ianthe - Saw the meme of "girlboss, gatekeep, gaslight" and took it as a checklist of life aspirations. Wants power and isn't above killing damn near anyone to get it.
Crux - "Hey, it's an innocent baby who never did anything wrong...Imma kill it's spirit and beat it physically for the lulz!"
So I might be wrong, never having finished it, but every time I see certain quotes from Gideon the Ninth it sounds an awful lot to me like the plot is "I abused you and I just realized that's super wrong and I'm sorry" and I'm glad someone wrote that and absolutely want it to exist because it needs to
but my brain keeps going "if you really are sorry, you'll leave and never demand any attention from the person you hurt and that'll be how it ends" but... I am pretty sure That's Not How It Ends.

For those that want to start Legends of Tomorrow but are overwhelmed by the lore a brief summary of the characters so you don’t have to watch Arrow or Flash
Legends of Tomorrow (summary of characters to get you caught up)
I recommend you start with season two as season one especially they try too hard to fit into the dark and gritty style of the other Arrowverse shows like arrow and Flash, and don’t really become their fun selves until around season three. But for now I’ll just give a summary of the first season characters who have ties to the greater Arrowverse.
The Legends of Tomorrow is a show about B (maybe C) list super heroes who have been recruited to a time traveling team to stop a supervillain from destroying the future.
You have Sarah Lance “AKA white canary” younger sister of Lorel Lance, she left on a boat trip with her sister’s boyfriend Oliver Queen. During a storm she was lost at sea and thought dead. This wasn’t the case as she eventually found herself rescued by “The League of Assassins” where she trained for five years. Before returning home to Star City where Oliver Queen had also returned adopting the persona of Vigilante Green Arrow (think batman with a bow and arrow). While helping Oliver fight crime she was killed and a year later brought back to life using the Lazarus Pit, her soul being restored by John Constantine.
Leonard Snart and Mick Rory are two thieves who mostly steal things, but occasionally helped the hero of their city, the Flash (superfast guy dressed in red). Snart uses a gun that freezes things, Rory uses a gun that shoots fire. (Snart also has a sister that has a gun that turns things to gold, not important to Legends, but she was pretty cool character.) [Spoilers ahead for season one ahead: at the end of season one Snart sacrifices himself in order to save his team and destroy the Time Masters (think more evil Time Lords)]
Ray Palmer “aka the Atom” (think Iron man if Tony stark was a himbo and instead of a super suit created the technology for antman) Palmer at some point takes over Oliver Queen’s company. Before this his fiancé was killed and wanting to never be helpless again he created his super suit and tried to help fight crime. Being a little too bumbly this proved more a problem to Arrow and his teammates than helpful.
Firestorm is a super hero made up of two people (think When our powers combine) before the legends fire storm was made up of Martin Stein, a scientist who accidentally fused himself with a man named Ronnie Raymond so that the two inhabited one body for a time. After Ronnie died, Martin’s health started to deteriorate as the Firestorm genes in him required him to have someone to link with. Team Flash tracked down a compatible partner in a mechanic named Jefferson Jackson. Now combined Martin acts as the brains and Jefferson as the body as they produce flames from their body (think human torch.)
Hawkman and Hawkgirl are the main story focus in the first season. They have a connection that started back in ancient Egypt where a run in with a sorcerer, Vandal Savage, gave them the ability to be reincarnated. Each incarnation Vandal hunts down and kills in order to gain stronger.
Rip Hunter is a man from the distant futures who gathers this team together in order to stop Vandal Savage, who in his future has brought great destruction on the world. With him Rip brings a time ship with an AI named Gideon. The ship allows them to travel through time as they try to find ways to stop Vandal Savage before the future Rip witnessed comes to pass.
EDIT: for those with an aversion to “Holes” be careful of season 4 where the main villain sometimes appears in his demon form with a face that resembles a bee hive.
#legends of tomorrow#sarah lance#let me know if i've forgotten anything major#just really tyring to hit the high points that might come up within the legends to confuse viewers who don't know the lore#save the legends of tomorrow#8 seasons and a movie

talking abt“unpopular” criminal minds characters
Matt: a KING. Underrated as hell. He loves his kids and his wife and despite barely knowing the team when he joins he obviously really cares about them. I don’t get why people like him.
Luke: Another underrated legend. Loves his dog so so so much. He is the definition of a himbo (I take no criticism over this). He tries really hard and is actually smarter than people give him credit for. Even though he only knew Reid for a few episodes prior to Mexico, he was still super dedicated to helping him out. His relationship with Garcia is so funny and he doesn’t get enough credit from the fandom.
Kate: I really liked her. She was smart and dedicated to her family. She fit in well with the team and I think if she was around for longer more people would’ve liked her too. However, I do think Tara and Alex were both better additions.
Tara: an icon. She is so smart and put together and cool and I just love her so much. She’s someone I look up to and the way she gets shit done is so good. She doesn’t take shit from anyone and is confident in herself (which is uncommon in a lot of TV women). The line about her going on a diet and losing 185 pounds after she left her boyfriend made me instantly love her.
Alex: Loved her so much. Was very caring and kind when it came to Spencer and was a smart and useful member of the team. I was sad to see she left the way she did (Reid had just got shot and then she left her credentials with him without even saying goodbye) but overall it did feel like a somewhat satisfying end to her time on the show. Another character who’s not given enough love by the fandom and I loved her friendship/ mother-son relationship with Reid.
Stephen Walker: He’s an interesting one to think about. When he first joined the team I didn’t like him because I thought he was a mole working for Scratch. But as the season progressed I realised I was wrong, and I slowly started to like him. Unlike Luke who seemed to form somewhat of a connection with Reid before the whole prison plot line, these two never really talked or got to know each other and still he fought just as hard to help Spencer. The episode with his friend and poisoning did actually make me feel sad but I think going into the season I knew this his character was just a placeholder. When he died I wasn’t too upset but in the end that was the point of him. He was a character put in for plot purposes and he served that role well. Not surprised people don’t talk about him but a little disappointed that he never even gets mentioned.
Seaver: Going into her introduction to the team I knew that people hated her. During her first episode I didn’t mind her, although as I was watching it I started to get a bit annoyed that her whole thing was that her dad was a serial killer. As the season continued she gradually got more and more annoying by doing things like putting down Reid, constantly talking about her dad and just not even being a good profiler. It’s clear that she was a discount JJ, even though she wasn’t even doing the same job. I heard a theory that she joined the team to learn more about law enforcement and how to evade it so she could follow in her father’s footsteps and become a serial killer herself. That would’ve been more interesting than her entire storyline/character because she sucked.
Elle: I loved Elle, and I know that if she was around post-Revelations she wouldn’t have ignored Reid’s addiction and trauma. She was badass and cool and also should’ve gotten more support for her trauma after what happened to her in Fisher King. One of my favourite fan ideas was the Elle continued killing with two options for how this idea played out. The first is that Elle acted as somewhat of a vigilante, killing rapists/sex offenders who haven’t faced “justice”. The other is that she snapped after leaving the BAU and eventually killed Gideon, which would’ve made episodes 13 and 14 of season 10 way more interesting more heartbreaking (especially for Reid). Yes I believe Emily is a bit better than Elle however I do love her so much and I was glad that she at least got to be on the show.

Top 5 FF XIV Chars! Have fun! :D
(( @pjarox Thank you for the ask!!! <3 )) (( put “top 5” anything in my ask and i will answer ok go ))
5.) Y’shtola
Look, I never recovered from the “Little Sun” episode. I had always had an eye for her because she matches my own personal taste and style. Illia was my first character and getting into the first cutscene with Y’shtola was very much a surprised pikachu face. Her being featured more in the later expansions and just how ruthless she can be with her wit is the best. She’s so capable, time after time.
4.) Aymeric
Himbo. Just. Certified himbo. The number of pretty obvious things that either slip his notice or he acts really surprised to learn. And though he may have started using the WoL as a tool like everyone else, in time he gets attached and it’s just really sweet to watch. After the events of HW, it seems like either him or Estinien are the ones that save your life and rescue from bad situations.
3.) Estinien
If you’ve seen my NPC alts, this one and the next two are no surprise lol Playing other FF games, dragoons and the dragoon class was always my favorites. So I started XIV as a DRG, which is of course where you meet Estinien before HW. It started with me wanting to kick the punk in the face, but as XIV does he’s very well written and as the game goes on I got more attached to my DRG bro. I was really happy to see him getting more attention as the patches went on. I’m hoping he takes a very central role in Endwalker.
2.) Urianger
Gideon Emery’s voice got my attention from the very first scene he’s in. I think until ShB his role was much more “behind the scenes” compared to everyone else. He’s always researching and looking for ways to help us until he just... “I have to do this to help them even if they hate me for it.” and I have a lot of emotions about it.
1.) Haurchefant.
No one’s surprised. I’m aware of this. He was showing up as one of my favorite from the moment the cinnamon roll helped us out in the middle of ARR and he took number one spot at the beginning of HW. My FC had to listen to me going “Hey, best frend has showed up!!” every time he came on screen. He always seemed like the very first person that was going to help us without really caring about the consequences and then he just keeps doing so.
