Mini-review:

I've seen many movies like this one, but it was still pretty fun. I enjoyed a lot of the recurring gags, and most of the characters were likable too, even if they weren't as fleshed out as they could have been. I didn't really get the reasoning behind all the drama that happens in the second half, and the movie lost steam when it started focusing on that. Still, Yuki Yamada's charming and committed performance carries the movie through all its ups and downs. I can't compare this version of You Are the Apple of My Eye with the original one, as I haven't seen it, but I do think Yamada makes this one worth watching.

My april top 5 movies:

The Sound of Music (1965, dir: Robert Wise) [Rewatch, after a decade] Maria is a lively woman who is working to become a nun. She is sent to the von Trapp family as a governess for the Captain's seven children, teaches them music and they soon can't imagine life without one another. This is just a perfect movie: I am so glad I decided to rewatch it! The songs are perfect, the love story is for the ages, and the antifascism is very much needed today as well. -

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical (2022, dir: Matthew Warchus) [First time watch] Roald Dahl's Matilda is the story of a little girl trying to navigate the world with the help of very good people and her own imagination. Add some very nice songs, change the story a bit, and you'll have this movie! To be honest, I think they might have changed it from the actual musical as well, because Matilda's story in the movie gets three whole scenes, while on stage it should be just one song. Anyway, anything that ends with a banger like "Revolting Children" is a great story. -

Rose Island (2020, dir: Sydney Sibilia) [First time watch; AKA L'incredibile storia dell'isola delle rose] Engineer Giorgio Rosa establishes an artificial island in the Adriatic Sea, out of Italy's nautical borders, and declares it its own State, with its own constitution and laws. The Italian government is afraid of what this could mean for them in the revolutionary air of 1968, so they decide to shut it down. This was a good movie, based on a real story that happened in the 60's. It's easy to watch and interesting to follow. -

Lingua Franca (2019, dir: Isabel Sandoval) [First time watch] Olivia is a trans woman and an undocumented Filipina immigrant who is working as a caregiver in the US. The man she is paying to marry for a green card leaves her unexpectedly, so she has to try another way. This movie was written, directed, and produced by Isabel Sandoval, who also stars as the main character. It's a poignant story and it's shot beautifully, too. -

You are the Apple of my Eye (2011, dir: Giddens Ko) [First time watch] A group of close friends has a crush on the same girl in their class. When the most rebel of them has to sit in front of her, she starts helping him by teaching him what he needs to pass the exams. The two start bonding and become each other's first love. This movie was very rude at times, but it also made me cry at the end (which is also pretty rude). It doesn't have a "happy ending" per se, but it does have a lovely "parallel universe" re-imagining, which was very cute to see.

Favourite series in april:

Midnight Museum (Thailand, 2023) [First time watch] A man finds the way into a secret museum that holds cursed objects, but thieves manage to break in and release all these objects in the world: this starts a series of unexplainable events that are connected by parallel universes, theological talks, and The End Of The World. The story was very interesting and I enjoyed following it and getting frustrated at the plot twists, but after that ending, I really wish they made a second season of this. -

Great Expectations (UK/USA, 2023) [First time watch] Interesting rendition of the Dickens' classic, which I actually enjoyed more than I thought! A little long in some points, but very well shot and directed. As usual, I keep waiting for a happy ending for Pip and Estella, but this ending was lovely as well.

  En ese momento, Yi Tianyu se sintió herido, por lo que se escondió temporalmente. En la posición donde él la dejó, Xue Jiao quedó atónita y se dio la vuelta. Dio unos pasos en la dirección en la que él había ido. La lluvia poco a poco empezó a caer intensamente. Estaba confuso frente a sus ojos. Su pie se desvió y cayó al suelo. Xue Jiao estaba acostada estúpidamente. Le dolían los pies y tenía los ojos fijos en el lago. Ella parpadeó y algo fluyó de sus ojos. Yi Tianyu era infantil y Yi Tianyu también era muy estúpido. Él siempre hace las cosas graciosas por error y siempre hace chistes graciosos delante de ella. Quería llevarla a comer fideos, pero logró que se congelara gravemente. No quería que ella caminara con el viento frío, así que la levantó... Un hombre tan joven, pero dejó que Xue Jiao ocasionalmente de manera inconsciente pusiera sus ojos en él. Todos tienen pequeños brotes creciendo en su corazón en la juventud, pero la mayoría de ellos no pueden crecer. Regañaron a Giddens Ko, regañaron a Chai Zhiping e incluso regañaron a Ke Jingteng. Pero al final, Shen Jiayi eligió a otra persona. (N/T: * Shen Jiayi es uno de los personajes principales del manga Chunqing Yatou Huolala. Es una joven hermosa y talentosa que atrae la atención de todos por su aspecto. Es una estudiante de intercambio de China que llega a Japón para estudiar. Es una chica inteligente, extrovertida y carismática que se gana el afecto de todos a su alrededor.) No sabe si está triste y arrepentida por extrañar a Ke Jingteng, pero sabe que lo que extrañó fue a la persona que no era adecuada para ella. En el futuro, pasará el resto de su vida con la persona más adecuada para ella y su favorito. Cuando eran jóvenes, no podían controlar los brotes que nacían en su corazón, pero en la oscuridad de la noche, de vez en cuando piensan en sus recuerdos. Más tarde, cuando Yi Tianyu vio accidentalmente una película, rompió la televisión con enojo y lloró. Estaba triste y poco dispuesto, pero sobre todo se arrepentía. Gastó mucho dinero para convocar a todos los actores. Los encontró uno por uno, como si hubiera encontrado su juventud y a la chica que solía estar a su alrededor... Cuando todos se reunieron, el director le preguntó qué hacer a continuación. Yi Tianyu quedó atónito. ¿Cómo se debe rodar? Se sostuvo la cara y lloró. La película, a la que sólo le habían cambiado tres frases, no salió al mercado. Yi Tianyu sostenía un cuaderno en blanco y negro y se sentó en un cine vacío. Llorando una y otra vez. Miraba la película de nuevo y lloraba de nuevo. Luego cerró los ojos. En su sueño, pudo volver a su juventud y abrazar a una joven que no pertenece a otro. Él diría esas tres palabras, él se decía a si mismo toda su vida. ‘Lo siento, te escucharé.’ ‘¡Me gustas!’ ‘Lo sé. You Are the Apple of My Eye (Japanese) review

Note: I know the original version of this movie is in mandarin, however I haven’t seen it. I just know that the plot is similar in both the movies.

Honestly it has been more than a year since I saw this movie but I still couldn’t get it out of my head. Maybe because the story was so realistic where there isn’t a boy + girl + love = happy ending type formula. I loved the experience of watching the movie even though the acting wasn’t the greatest. I feel like over time I started to understand the story a little better and now when I think about the movie I don’t see the actors, I just remember the feeling I felt watching it. The reason my rating is so low for this movie is because of the acting. I feel like the main characters, especially the female lead, was very vague in her expressions. It just felt like the guy was chasing after a girl who really didn’t know what she wanted, when the story is not about that. It is about a young couple who had very different personalities but somehow still loved each other and how their relationship didn’t last due to their different maturity levels. 

After this movie ended, I felt so uncomfortable, angry and frustrated. I guess I am a bit of an idealist when it comes to love so I couldn’t accept the bittersweet ending. Even though the male lead accepted that the girl moved on, when he kisses her husband to showcase how he would kiss her if he had the chance just shows how much he loves her. Or the time of the earthquake when the first person he checked up on was her. Or the fact that he was writing this story in the first place and thinking about publishing it. It always makes you wonder if maybe the day they had an argument and he was mature enough to apologize to her, they would be together now. 

There is something magical about  Giddens Ko’s story and I knew it was inspired from real life based on how the story was portrayed. This movie is one of those where you just tell yourself “This is just life” and move on. Sweet yet sad.
