Blessed Are The Pure In Heart
Tumblr media
Victoria amazonica or Victoria Water Lily growing nicely in the tropics here. Photo credit: Eleanor Chua.
A native of South America, this giant water lily was so named in honour of Queen Victoria of England in 1837 who had ascended the throne that year. It was an era when many exotic plants, such as this water lily, were cultivated.

May i introduce: Rana of the Bog, a witch of frogs, with her familiar Twiggly Twop, the Fairy Frog.
Rana lives in a shabby hut in the heart of the western swamps. Usually, she spends her day tending to her waterlily farm and the small army of frogs.
Any villager that might wander into the supposedly haunted bog to kill the evil witch that terrorizes the land with frog plagues will face a labyrinth of gnarled roots, weathered wooden walkways trapped with ropes, and the ever watchful eyes of the frog army (which currently consists of seven vicious frogs; one of which has a knife) led by Twiggly Twop, the Fairy Frog.
Any human seeking safety and shelter from evil witch-hunting villagers will be led by the frog army through the labyrinthine swamp to a shoddy wooden house, where Rana may sell them a potion to cure warts, a potion to inflict warts, or a potion to protect against wart-inflicting potions.
Rana is a cunning and optimistic character. Though seemingly young and naive, she really is a only few centuries old, which may seem ancient by human standards, but is somewhere close to early-20s in witch years. She loves life in the swamp, rarely leaving the eternally green twilight beneath giant trees. All of her magic is frog-based and not exactly effective in combat, because frogs are somewhat squishy. This is one of the reasons why Rana is currently working to breed a new species of armor-piercing frogs, just in case. She has three brooms: one is for cleaning and one for smacking frogs. The third is her flying broom, which she named Potato. She uses that one every time she simply doesnt want to walk. Which happens a lot.
Her favorite animal is a shark. She doesn't know what a shark is, and really hopes to one day meet one. Hopefully it gets along with her frogs.

The barstool she’s perched on, right at the counter in the Boot of Jemiah, seems to be the best place to experience it all. If only it weren’t for the low wrenching clench of misery, anyway. “Watch it,” Rocket snaps, tugging her cardigan back over the makeshift holster he’d had her strap around her thigh. “You’re gonna get the frickin’ thing stolen before you even get a chance to use it—”
If I need to use it, she thinks mutinously, but doesn’t say. “Try this,” Drax suggests loudly, plunking a giant stein down in front of her. Something that manages to be both tarry and foamy sloshes over the lip. “She don’t need that.” Rocket’s words are sharp. “It’ll peel off her goddamn insides.” She tilts her head and studies it curiously, raising her voice to be heard over the tumult of voices around them. “Really?” “Nah,” says the barkeep distractedly, wiping down the counters with two hands and pouring drinks with the other three. Jemiah himself, pearl remembers. “But I doubt you’ve got the — hey! Shitbags! Pearl stares at the stein longingly, and then swipes a finger through the sludgy foam and pops it in her mouth. And chokes. “It’s good, is it not?” Drax asks eagerly, voice raised over the chaos, and Rocket cackles.

Botanicum – Giant Waterlily
‘Often with old scientific illustrations, they were done in the field or maybe with imperfect specimens, so there’s a lot of guesswork and artistic licence. I like that, and it makes for slightly surreal work’
Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.

Do any of OCs have fans?
Swanna and Lee have some very nice ceiling fans installed in their tour center. They're all nice, dark shades of pink and purple.
Imogen and her family have this magical mill-like fan that they power their house with.
I don't think they would have ceiling fans in Ice Cream Land, so it's a no for Germafrost, Piano, Sgt. Wolf, and the other Gelatarians.
It's a no for the Marevians as well, since I think Marevi wouldn't have ceiling fans either.
In Botania, I see some places having fans and others not having them, so it varies for the people there. I think that Kira's house wouldn't have fans in it, Bia and Allegra do have ceiling fans made of leaves, and Zora has a portable fan. The Petalstones probably live in homes that don't have fans. Apparently, fans use less electricity than air conditioning, so HVAC isn't big in Botania.
Much like Imogen's, The giant geode house Trey and his family live in is powered by a magical fan. But, since Charm Valley's climate is cooler than Frowntown (at least, as I would imagine), Trey's fan uses Fire magic while Imogen's uses Air.
People in Elegancia and Swan Lake don't tend to have ceiling fans in their homes, but more and more people have installed them recently.
Wait... what was that now?
Oh, so you meant the kinds of fans that are, like, admirers?
Oh, okay! Okay! Let me start over.
Swanna and Lee have some admirers around the world, all of them wondering when they'll see her again. In the Unikingdom, on the Uni-Net, she has a bunch of fans subscribed to her fashion channel.
Sgt. Wolf doesn't really have any fans, but there are some people who have tried to excuse her bad choices. "Oh, she's just trying to protect her pack! She and her pack are a team!"
Germafrost doesn't exactly have any fans either, but the people of Ice Cream Land have begun to look up to him the same way they do to his parents. On the other side of the coin, Waterlily is respected like her parents, but the people of Marevi treat them like close friends rather than monarchs, as I said. As I've also confirmed, Lily goes to a normal school.
Allegra is really popular, both at her school and in her tree. Outside of the Landgang, she has a lot of friends, such as her trapeze partner, who admire her.
The Petalstones have many fans around the world. Most of their fans are, as you would expect, from Botania like them. Botania highly encourages people to be respectful to their favorite musicians, and to not put them on pedestals.

yes that's what.the community calls them! nootflies!
here is the delicious Downpour menu!
Gooieduck - I'm gonna be real with you I have no idea what this is. They're flora I guess, but they also breathe???? To eat them you first have to pop them by holding the eat button. They're pretty convenient, you can find them in the Outer Expanse and the Subterranean
Lilypuck - a glowing waterlily! while edible, they're also a weapon - their stalk is as sharp as glass and can be thrown and used as a spear! Found in the flooded parts of the world, most.often Shaded Citadel
Dandelion peach - presumably peach-flavor dandelion.puffs, found in Sky Islands!
Glow weed - they're algae I think? theyre.mostly compressed air and seaweed. they glow and can be used as lanterns or exchanged with Scavengers
Seed - In the time of Saint, it's the freaking ice age, so instead of usint spears (Something Saint can't do), you just wait for a blizzard and collect the seeds that pop out.of a frozen Popcorn plant
Fire egg - Saint again. In the boiling hot hellish area of Rubicon, Firebugs can be found. If killed with a special spear, they'll pop and drop eggs - they resemble bubble fruit, but are usually pink or red or orange!
Giant jellyfish - it's a jellyfish... that is gigantic. If killed, pops into edible pieces.
spearmaster is a unique fella in that he can eat from any creature by stabbing them! but a few foods are unavailable to him if not stabbable
Edible but not nutritious items coming in the next ask!
- the pro chef, 🧀 anon
Gooieduck is pronounced the same way as geoduck, an edible mollusc native to the west coast of North America!
Tumblr media
Lilypuck sounds good! I eat the roast and eat the stalks, roots, and bulbs of waterlilies. The seed pods you can eat raw!

We should call it the Bolivian Waterlily, since that's another name for it that is both accurate and less colonial. (Wikipedia doesn't have the Bolivian name for it, but I also saw "giant waterlily")
Tumblr media
The Victoria water lily, named for Queen Victoria of the England, is native to the Amazon river basin and can hold up to 70 pounds of weight.

She recognizes that plating, and because of that Waterlily is throwing a punch right for his faceplate.
...Bruh. He's buying robot groceries for his robot family. Fresh market shit, see??
WHAM.
Blackout's head twists painfully away from the unexpected impact to his jaw. He stumbles hard, giant feet thudding against the ground as smaller mechs (most are) scramble out of his way.
For the moment, the tyton keeps his back to her. Slowly, though, he turns to regard the femme, wiping energon from his split lip.

"Babycakes," he grows softly. "I better have deserved that, or you better be mentally fucked. Otherwise, I'm fixing to get real fucking annoyed."

The Amazing Art of Cath Whitehead
Tumblr media
April 28 24
THE AMAZING ART OF CATH WHITEHEAD
Blog by Lynne Pearl
Cath has been painting, in love with art since childhood, she would say and has always been fascinated by painting and art.  It is definitely a gift when you see the amount of art, the strength of it and how her whole house is filled with art.  This is not a mild interest this is a fine calling.  Where people usually sit in chairs there are paintings stacked up in their tens and propped on the stairs and in the spare bedroom which no longer houses human guests but paintings upon paintings.  The imagined world and the light of a vibrant perception is everywhere.
Tumblr media
Cath started in watercolour and has moved into pastel but now mostly uses acrylic to achieve the effects she is after.  Her subject is mostly landscape and she enjoys the here and now but always looking beyond to something eternal.  She has organised painting holidays but now tends to paint with friends on a day painting in nature in the South West UK.
Cath has learnt much about technique.  She applies the colour richly and in the style of the 19th century Impressionists.  As I look at her painting of an estuary or of a tree, I am reminded of sitting in an art gallery in Paris that houses Monet’s ‘Waterlilies’.  Towards the end of his life he painted the water lilies in his garden at Giverney, not just a few small paintings, these are giant canvases which depict the light on the water and the lilies at every time of the day and how they change with the light, the sun and the water.  It is a closely examined and depicted art of the nature of change, moment by moment, the transitoriness of light and flowers on water.
Cath does the same with her depictions of the countryside of Devon, with the light falling on the red soil churned in furrows by the plough and the sea as it sits moodily in a steep sided estuary.  Trees become painted as giant friends, with almost a personality they are so firm and present to the viewer.  The intrusion of the human world in the form of architecture becomes monumental and reduced to the bare minimum.
Tumblr media
Cath interprets a world for us that is teeming with life and so beautiful in its colours that it almost hurts the eyes to view.  It is a celestial portrait of the Earth brought down for us to see and be inspired by.
Tumblr media
Her latest exhibition will be at: PENNSYLVANIA  ART GROUP,   Engine House, Killerton House, Devon UK. May 19, 10 am to 4.30 pm
All funds will go to a Ugandan charity.

Seoul Botanic Park
We walked from the metro stop through the outdoor gardens, ranging from more natural pond landscapes to themed flower gardens, before going inside the arboretum. The main attraction was the lush, two story indoor jungle filled with hanging mosses, giant fig and ficus trees, waterfalls and ponds, and broad-leaved monsteras and banana trees. My favorite part was the giant Victoria Waterlily in the pond. While beautiful, the lily pads are viscous to surrounding flora as their huge size and rapid growth makes it hard for other plants to compete for sunlight. Some of the other exhibits in the gardens included a dryer, cactus filled biome, and displays of plants native to Korea.

Holidays the Big Bright World is celebrating this summer:
Weather Festival (Marevi)
Summer Solstice (Charm Valley)
Annual ReGala (Elegancia)
Earth Day (Marevi)
Toyland Fair (Unikingdom’s Toy District)
Eternal Bloom Festival (Botania)
Ruby Hearts Day (Elegancia)
Information about how they’re celebrated can be found in this post.
Here’s some more:
Non-Charm Valleyans have mistaken the giant torches they light at the summer solstice (to represent the bountiful magic sparks) for a fun beach bonfire, or for a ritual of some kind.
The Annual ReGala comes from a really old fic that the creator of Elegancia, Char Star, wrote. Like everything else about it, she’s okay with me including it in BBW. All the fancy people arriving at the ball is broadcasted live on TV like a red carpet event.
(Negativity/Depressing Thoughts Warning!) On Earth Day, when people pay visits to King Nettle and Queen Moonlily to thank them for their knowledge of the world, they do it for Waterlily, too. However, Waterlily feels like she’s a waste of space. She wants to be queen, the Life-Giver, but how can she when life was, and still is, cruel to her? How could she give people something that’s kind to them, but hurts her? Is she just air for other people to breathe? At best, she’s joining in on the celebrations, and at worst, she’s in her room wanting to fall down a trench.
As I’ve said before, I headcanon the Toy Zone to be an entire district/province/whatever in the Unikingdom. Tinker Junior High and Knickknack Senior High are located there; Annie the squirrel is set to go to them.
Allegra parades with her school’s circus troupe every Eternal Bloom Festival. Kira and her friends always go see her when they’re at the carnival.
Dr. Fox would always study the crabs when her family took her out on Elegancia’s beaches for Ruby Hearts Day. In Botania, when they celebrated the Eternal Bloom Festival, she’d study the carnival staff.
What festivals and holidays occur in the summer in your world? How are they celebrated?
