One of the things that I love with my interpretation of Casper is how he transforms. Figuratively and I suppose physically too. Let me elaborate for a moment here.

With time passing by, and gradually recovering his memory (as well as Stinkie's since he's all but changed himself and has been interested in it), Casper's personality and way of moving is different. It could be because of who he's hanging around, but his uncles know better. There's more to it.

Since Casper has found out certain parts of himself, the child has been more tricky with what he does. Manipulative to a certain extent, and at very rare times cold, but overall still retains good intentions. Just happens to accept doing nasty things. Which is very different from before.

His form seems to change to, but hardly enough to warrant a response right now.

Now who could've possibly influenced him to be such a way? His uncles obviously for one. But it seems he's got a much better handle with getting away with his acts. Moves far too swiftly that it almost feels like an instinct that just suddenly kicked into gear one day.

His uncles aren't saying a thing. Least not out loud. Just... taking it in for the moment

Sorry for the delays, this took forever.

Me and my beta reader kept on getting stuck when writing this. We managed to get through this chapter eventually but sorry it took (checks last updated date on my fic) four months.

The story is reaching its climax (lol) soon, so there was a lot of work going into future chapters too. But there may still be a massive wait between chapters. At least the plot's picking back up.

[Review] Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures (3DS)

What if Pac-Man was Mega Man but also slow and boring?

I’ve been loyal to Inti Creates ever since I fell in love with Rockman Zero (I played a Japanese import first). They kinda lost me with Gunvolt and I find Gal Gun deplorable but they usually seem like they’re really trying to make compelling action games. I’ve wanted to try this handheld companion game to the 3D platformer console tie in to the modern animated series since I learned they were behind it, and after seeing this reboot’s debut in Dimensions it seemed like a good time for it. As for the game, well, I guess every studio has their phoned-in contract work.

This setting has a surprisingly dark backstory but the actual stories are light and stuffed with “action show for kids” tropes. Pac is a teenager always talking about burgers, grimacing, and hanging out with his hideous friends. He also might secretly be a superhero? Either way, he is “the only one” who can save Pactown in Pacworld or whatever, by eating ghosts which regularly invade via the schemes of their boss Evil McEvilface, er excuse me, “Betrayus”.

A lot of familiar Pac elements are repurposed in occasionally tortured ways: the classic ghost foursome have new designs and are your double agent friends, the fruits exist as transforming vehicles that assist with certain platforming sections, and pellets are central. The small ones, called cookies for some reason, give you lives (again, why have these in a game that you’re intentionally making easier for kids?) and spawn in fruits for points. Power pellets, here berries of the “tree of life”, have elemental alignments that act as your Mega Man powers.

You can pick from a set of six stages, and the action plays out as a sidescroller. Certain stages unlock new abilities, four in all: fire, ice, magnet, and… chameleon. Collectibles can increase your stock of berries, or unlock art or entries in the model viewer. The powers of course can help you in combat and to interact with your environment to find goodies; replaying stages with new powers is encouraged but I opted out, thanks very much. Chameleon is the most fun when given a chance to shine, as its tongue lets you grapple around and best plays into the combo system.

The most interesting thing the game does is this mid-air mechanic. You can multiply your score by eating successive ghosts without landing. Well, score didn’t matter much to me but just pulling off strings is satisfying and sometimes lets you reach new areas. Pac has a single-use Yoshi-like flutter jump and a chomp attack that gives you a horizontal boost and can home in on ghosts. This all could add up to a dynamic and fun movement system but in truth it’s quite stilted and never reaches its full potential.

The combination of mid-air mobility and the powers giving you alternate attacks again could make for really exciting boss fights, and occasionally when you find a specific interaction between a power and a boss weakness there’s moments of brilliance. But most of the time these fights just plod along, waiting for them to become vulnerable. The late-game boss rush only hammers this home.

Inti Create have shown that they can make world-class Mega Man games, whether it’s the slick Zero games or Mighty Gunvolt Burst with its classic vibes and novel customisation. You can see a little tiny bit of that expertise being applied here but it’s not enough. Amusing as it is to meld that gameplay structure and its recognisable characteristics in with this ridiculous setting and its weird try-hard updating of a gaming icon, it just doesn’t amount to much. And that’s a shame, because this could have been something special.

In some ways I am uniquely fitted to the retail workspace due to my powerful ability to smile at anybody and dissociate my bodily needs when necessary (as well as my skill in explaining complex things in Customer Service Terms and ability to find anything on the shelf even if I don't work in the store I'm standing in) but also I'm just shy enough that I barely get credit for working long hours and doing the work of three people in a single shift and usually only talk to the store manager when she wants me to stay late or add two more hour long tasks to my mental roster of things to do today. My two achievements that mark my skill is that the first ever secret shopper to hit the online shopping department at my old store got me as their helper and I nailed every single check on the list and that I got employee of the month in two months at my current store. Everything else I do is just "what polar does" and that sucks so much for me

I love the dynamic I have created on my mind between ghost Anakin and his children because with Luke is like, wacky! fun! adventure with my ghost dad, yay! That's lowkey my ghostly protector and guide! We gossip a lot!

While with Leia is like, gothic horror style stuff or like, Anakin is their personal banshee because he respects Leia's wishes and wont approach her unless there's something BAD about to happen that he can not not show up to at the very least give a warning; like Leia will see a ghost awkwardly standing on the corner and she already knows is bad news that she can't ignore

Love Letters from Space

Love is in the air, and it’s out in space too! The universe is full of amazing chemistry, cosmic couples held together by gravitational attraction, and stars pulsing like beating hearts.

Celestial objects send out messages we can detect if we know how to listen for them. Our upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will help us scour the skies for all kinds of star-crossed signals.

Celestial Conversation Hearts

Communication is key for any relationship – including our relationship with space. Different telescopes are tuned to pick up different messages from across the universe, and combining them helps us learn even more. Roman is designed to see some visible light – the type of light our eyes can see, featured in the photo above from a ground-based telescope – in addition to longer wavelengths, called infrared. That will help us peer through clouds of dust and across immense stretches of space.

Other telescopes can see different types of light, and some detectors can even help us study cosmic rays, ghostly neutrinos, and ripples in space called gravitational waves.

Intergalactic Hugs

This visible and near-infrared image from the Hubble Space Telescope captures two hearts locked in a cosmic embrace. Known as the Antennae Galaxies, this pair’s love burns bright. The two spiral galaxies are merging together, igniting the birth of brand new baby stars.

Stellar nurseries are often very dusty places, which can make it hard to tell what’s going on. But since Roman can peer through dust, it will help us see stars in their infancy. And Roman’s large view of space coupled with its sharp, deep imaging will help us study how galaxy mergers have evolved since the early universe.

Cosmic Chemistry

Those stars are destined to create new chemistry, forging elements and scattering them into space as they live, die, and merge together. Roman will help us understand the cosmic era when stars first began forming. The mission will help scientists learn more about how elements were created and distributed throughout galaxies.

Did you know that U and I (uranium and iodine) were both made from merging neutron stars? Speaking of which…

Fatal Attraction

When two neutron stars come together in a marriage of sorts, it creates some spectacular fireworks! While they start out as stellar sweethearts, these and some other types of cosmic couples are fated for devastating breakups.

When a white dwarf – the leftover core from a Sun-like star that ran out of fuel – steals material from its companion, it can throw everything off balance and lead to a cataclysmic explosion. Studying these outbursts, called type Ia supernovae, led to the discovery that the expansion of the universe is speeding up. Roman will scan the skies for these exploding stars to help us figure out what’s causing the expansion to accelerate – a mystery known as dark energy.

Going Solo

Plenty of things in our galaxy are single, including hundreds of millions of stellar-mass black holes and trillions of “rogue” planets. These objects are effectively invisible – dark objects lost in the inky void of space – but Roman will see them thanks to wrinkles in space-time.

Anything with mass warps the fabric of space-time. So when an intervening object nearly aligns with a background star from our vantage point, light from the star curves as it travels through the warped space-time around the nearer object. The object acts like a natural lens, focusing and amplifying the background star’s light.

Thanks to this observational effect, which makes stars appear to temporarily pulse brighter, Roman will reveal all kinds of things we’d never be able to see otherwise.
