Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence - After the Long Goodbye (Masaki Yamada, 2004)
"The hulking cyborg counterterrorist, Batou, doesn't have a family; his electronic brain never dreams. So why did he dream the other night--and dream that he has a son?
At one time, Batou had a human love for his partner, the legendary Major, before he witnessed her transfiguration into something beyond humanity. Now he has only his job, and his beloved basset hound, Gabriel. But when Batou has a near-death experience in an arranged car "accident", he returns home to find Gabriel has gone missing--perhaps, to go look for her owner's lost soul.
Batou's desperate search for Gabriel leads him down surreal streets where homeless men fight tanks and yakuza racing hounds chase rabbits downloaded into their heads. Batou fears his poor dog has made a horrible mistake out of innocence--for Batou has taken a cold look inside himself... and decided that he never truly had a soul..."

Just saw this with the boyfriend at the Gateway. Fantastic! Super psychedelic and hyper esoteric, just the way I like it. With Batou in the lead this time, it felt like Blade Runner starring the Terminator with hints of the Matrix. I found the experimental art style especially captivating, like tripping balls on a Playstation. With such a heavy emphasis on the uncanny valley in the story, the medium immaculately matches the message. Even when the cgi doesn’t look great, it’s always engaging. I also found the mirrored parallels to the first movie fascinating. While the antagonist of both films is a barely mobile conscious automaton, the Puppet Master was a digital consciousness who aspired to ascend and becoming “more than”, while the villain in this story was a human consciousness invested in becoming a doll, or otherwise “less than”. Two completely opposite approaches in achieving perfection: to become all things, or nothing at all.

Despite watching Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence way back in college (on a borrowed DVD copy that I certainly hope I eventually returned to its proper owner), I retained virtually no memory of its plot. After recently revisiting the film on the big screen (courtesy of the gorgeous new 4K restoration distributed by GKIDS), however, I sincerely doubt that I’ll ever forget it again. This is a bona fide sci-fi masterpiece—a neon-drenched cyberpunk noir-flavored buddy cop techno-thriller of the highest caliber. Writer/director Mamoru Oshii has quite a lot to say—about perception, reality, philosophy, existentialism, and human consciousness (to name a mere fraction of the myriad themes explored)—and enough patience to articulate his thesis thoroughly and rigorously. Featuring an impenetrably labyrinthine narrative, deliberate pacing, and meticulously detailed animation, the movie delights the senses and intellect in equal measure. Beam it straight into my brain on an infinitely repeating loop; I never want to stop experiencing its beauty!
