UPDATE: I never did get around to the oil pastel landscape prompt. I couldn’t find a landscape image that worked for me, and coming up with an idea on my own would’ve turned out bad. So, the prompt goes back into the box for a later time.
For the Rhythm and 90s Art-to-Music piece, putting together a playlist was the easiest part – which is weird, since it usually takes me several attempts to create even a regular playlist because I usually get bored early or I keep changing my mind. I chose to limit it to somewhere between music I was into between 5th grade and the middle of 8th grade (that was when it became 2000, so). I’ll list the entire playlist below (though I didn’t get through all the songs). When it came to the painting, I did sketch something out, but the final product looked nothing like the concept. I kept changing my mind, repeatedly, about what I wanted it to look like. Even after I already started painting a bit, the design of the unpainted sections kept getting erased and altered numerous times.
90s Playlist (on shuffle): Strong Enough (Cher) // Lovefool (Cardigans) // Kiss Me (Sixpence None the Richer) // Never Ever (All Saints) // You Make Me Wanna … (Usher) // Do It (Spice Girls) // I Don’t Want to Wait (Paula Cole) // You’re Still the One (Shania Twain) // Torn (Natalie Imbruglia) // Wannabe (Spice Girls) // No Scrubs (TLC) // Believe (Cher) // C’Est la Vie (B*Witched) // Move Over (Spice Girls) // If You Had My Love (Jennifer Lopez) // Sex & Candy (Marcy Playground) // I Love You Always Forever (Donna Lewis) // Too Much (Spice Girls) // I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing (Aerosmith) // Cruel Summer (Ace of Base) // Heartbreak Hotel (Whitney Houston, ft. Kelly Price & Faith Evans) // Breathe (Faith Hill) // Ice Cream (Sarah McLachlan) // Baby, One More Time (Britney Spears) // Genie in a Bottle (Christina Aguilera) // Building a Mystery (Sarah McLachlan) // Colors of the Wind (Vanessa Williams) // Bitch (Meredith Brooks) // Have You Ever (Brandy) // Uninvited (Alanis Morissette) // I’ll Be (Edwin McCain) // Show Me Love (Robyn) // Honey (Mariah Carey) // The Lady is a Vamp (Spice Girls) // Who Will Save Your Soul (Jewel) // Secret Garden (Bruce Springsteen) // I’ll Be (Reba McEntire) // Unbreak My Heart (Toni Braxton) // Jumpin, Jumpin (Destiny’s Child) // MMMBop (Hanson) // All Star (Smash Mouth) // Ghetto Supastar (Pras, ft. Mya) // The Boy is Mine (Brandy & Monica) // Say You’ll Be There (Spice Girls) // Then You Look at Me (Celine Dion) // As Long As You Love Me (Backstreet Boys) // Frozen (Madonna) // Who Do you Think You Are (Spice Girls) // One Headlight (The Wallflowers) // Foolish Games (Jewel) // Say My Name (Destiny’s Child) // Viva Forever (Spice Girls) // The Way You Love Me (Faith Hill) // You Were Meant for Me (Jewel) // Stay (Lisa Loeb) // Wide Open Spaces (The Chicks [formerly Dixie Chicks]) // From This Moment On (Shania Twain) // Angel of Mine (Monica) // How Do I Live (LeAnn Rimes) // Iris (Goo Goo Dolls) // Fantasy (Mariah Carey) // You Oughta Know (Alanis Morissette) // Last Time Lover (Spice Girls) // Spice Up Your Life (Spice Girls) // Ironic (Alanis Morissette) // Don’t Speak (No Doubt) // My Heart Will Go On (Celine Dion) // The Freshmen (The Verve Pipe) // Candy (Mandy Moore) // Waiting for Tonight (Jennifer Lopez) // Sometimes (Britney Spears) // Doo Wop (Lauryn Hill) // All or Nothing (Cher) // Ready to Run (The Chicks) // Always Be My Baby (Mariah Carey) // Don’t Let Go (En Vogue) // Waterfalls (TLC) // That’s the Way It Is (Celine Dion) // Someday (Mariah Carey) // Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It (Will Smith)
The neon pink is meant to be the Barbie pink. Barbie was obviously a big part of my childhood, and I still remember playing with them a bit in 8th grade. Not long after that, though, my mom bedrooms, and the Barbie stuff that was in that “playroom” moved to her original bedroom (that was across the hall from my room) and I sort of stopped playing with them after that. Now, Nickelodeon was a bit part of my childhood, too, but more so between early to mid 90s. But, I think I still watched a few things during the later part of the decade. So, that is why I include the green to represent the slime and the orange bit is the Nick splat (or supposed to look like it). I was also into baby blue and it held on into the early early 2000s until all I wore was black or dull and dark colors (I wasn’t emo/goth; I was just depressed and stopped giving a shit about life). I wasn’t much into light/baby pink but it was still a thing. The sunflower against a blue background was very in during that period. I had a favorite dress in 5th grade that was this beautiful blue (lighter than the shade I used here) and it had a vibrant yellow trim that matched the flowers. Next, the pokeball. Pokémon was also very popular during that time period, and then I sort of lost interest in 8th grade and gave all my cards to my brother. Now, the pokeball is upside down here. That was an accident. I didn’t realize that, until after it was all finished, that the red goes on top. Oops. I didn’t want to rotate the canvas until the pokeball looked correct because there is a flow to this painting. The top is the top and the pokeball is upside down.
August Art Prompts
July was okay, just got a bit sidetracked.
August's main art prompt/theme is: Rhythm.
Other optional prompts:
Oil pastel landscapes. (tried this once before, so let's try it again)
2. Art-to-Music/Music-to-Art: 90s. Pick your supplies, then create a playlist (via whatever app or program you use), and let the music inspire your art. (I'm combining this with the main theme, because it fits perfectly. Though, I have a shit ton of 90s music from a variety of genres throughout the decade and they have different vibes, so I got to figure this out.)

Today’s compilation:
1999 Grammy Rap Nominees Elektra Records 1999 Hip Hop
I'm honestly impressed by how good this comp is. You'd probably expect that, given their track record, the Recording Academy wouldn't know a good rap tune if it delivered a hard backhand slap to their collective faces, but the list of nominees from their 1999 awards show is pretty stellar. Busta Rhymes, Lauryn Hill, Beastie Boys, OutKast, Big Pun, and A Tribe Called Quest all received nominations and are on this comp, so you can't really go wrong with this thing. If you want some good, late 90s classic hip hop, this has some really great tracks on it.
But there's still a few quibbles to be had here. One, the selection has a total east coast bias, both mostly north and a little south. Hip hop was huge in every major American city by '99 and to not show appreciation for the west coast, the southwest, or the midwest feels like an ignorant move. And the south is only represented by Jermaine Dupri and OutKast. No love for Master P with No Limit or Birdman and Mannie Fresh with Cash Money; two southern hip hop labels that were doing big things at the time. Then there's the fact that Jay-Z received nominations for "Hard Knock Life" and the respective album it appears on, but neither that song nor any song from that particular album are on this comp. Maybe Elektra, who put out this comp, couldn't obtain licensing from Def Jam or Roc-A-Fella? Either way, kind of disappointing considering how big of a deal "Hard Knock Life" was back then.
Final thing that I can't just let slide: despite how unexpectedly great the list of nominees was for best rap solo performance, Will Smith was still the one who ended up taking home the Grammy for "Gettin' Jiggy with It". Just a big lmao. It's a fun tune and all, but it's really not that good. Its rapping is subpar at best. Every other song that it was nominated with is much better. Let the record show that when given the choice between four plates of gourmet food and a gas station burrito, the Recording Academy chose the burrito.
The three sets of nominated songs on this comp are for three categories: the aforementioned Best Rap Solo Performance, Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, and Best Rap Album. See if you agree with who the Recording Academy ultimately chose as the winner for each of these categories.
Best Rap Solo:
Busta Rhymes - "Dangerous" Lauryn Hill - "Lost Ones" Wyclef Jean - "Gone Till November" Will Smith - "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" Jay-Z - "Hard Knock Life"
Best Rap Duo or Group:
Beastie Boys - "Intergalactic" Jermaine Dupri feat. Jay-Z - "Money Ain't a Thang" Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz - "Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)" OutKast - "Rosa Parks" Pras Michel feat. Ol' Dirty Bastard & Mya - "Ghetto Supastar"
Best Rap Album:
Capital Punishment by Big Punisher Life in 1472 - The Original Soundtrack by Jermaine Dupri Harlem World by Mase The Love Movement by A Tribe Called Quest Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life by Jay-Z
For me, personally, that's an "absolutely not" on Will Smith, a "yes" to the Beastie Boys for crafting what is still to this day one of the most unique hip hop tracks of all time, and a "yes" to Jay-Z, although I would've been cool with Pun or Tribe, too. Just as long as it wasn't Mase. I'll never understand how that dude was ever popular.
Highlights:
Busta Rhymes - "Dangerous" Lauryn Hill - "The Lost Ones" Wyclef Jean - "Gone Till November" Will Smith - "Gettin' Jiggy with It" Beastie Boys - "Intergalactic" Jermaine Dupri feat. Jay-Z - "Money Ain't a Thang" Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz - "Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)" OutKast - "Rosa Parks" Pras Michel feat. Ol' Dirty Bastard & Mya - "Ghetto Supastar" Big Punisher feat. Noreaga - "You Came Up” A Tribe Called Quest - "Find a Way"

Stunt double
Need me a stunt double
Grab your broad that hoe in trouble
I feed her rod we never cuddle
Stunt double
Hater get to me hardly
Off the rope like hardy
With a cardi
Sipping on bicardi
Hope she doesn't rob me
Bitches starving

Want to make a prophet
Hoe just stop it

In the hood
Chiefing all the woods
Young nigga living good

Need me a stunt double
Grab your hoe that bitch in trouble
