Kpop title track ranking: GFRIEND
In this series I’ll be ranking kpop groups/soloists title tracks based on my taste.
I was a huge Buddy and GFRIEND is still definitely one of my favorite girl groups. The sudden disbandment was definitely a hit that I wasn’t expecting and that was quite hard to take.
Apple - There is something very enchanting about Apple for me. And oh this mature GFRIEND sound was sooo good, I can’t even. I love it.
Fingertip - This is such a bop! I fell in love with it immediately. It has more attitude compared to the earlier songs and I absolutely were all for it. And it still really holds up!
Crossroads - Title track of my overall favorite GFRIEND album, and I’m happy to report that I actually purchased it quite recently! (this is a note worth to mention, as my album collection is quite moderate and definitely male group heavy) As a song this has a potential to get me teary-eyed if I’m on the right mood for it for sure.
Sunrise - I absolutely loved this from the first listen! It’s so so pretty. And I have to say I love that Eunha’s high note! Another one that has gotten me teary-eyed at some point listening to it.
Sunny Summer - Oh Sunny Summer is so fun! I love the member names being part of the lyrics, it’s so witty and cute! This is truly the summer song that I come back to year after year. This just puts me in a such a good mood!
Time for the Moon Night - Oh this is so so pretty! I just enjoyed the song instead of being able to come up with anything else to add to that.
MAGO - This is such a perfect way to do retro! It just really is a shame that this ended up being the last one... The mature sounding GFRIEND had so much more to give.
Rough - Rough era was when GFRIEND clicked with me for the first time. It’s such a lovely song, how could I not like it? And very quickly I ended up really liking the girls, and especially my bias Yerin, after watching their older variety show appearances and such.
Fever - I have to again admit that I ignored this song when it came out. But luckily again at some point I realized my mistake and started liking it quite a bit!
Navillera - My first comeback as a fan. It’s just very catchy and fun.
Me Gustas Tu - This was the era that I paid attention to GFRIEND for the first time but actually that was because I disliked the song xD I just found it really annoying. After becoming Buddy my opinion on it first mellowed down and now I can say it’s cute and enjoyable.
Glass Bead - Very cute. This pre-dates me being a Buddy and hence it doesn’t quite have a fighting chance against those songs that I really really like/liked that came after it, but there still are couple below it as I don’t really dislike it either.
Love Whisper - Oh no this was such a disappointment style-wise for me coming after Fingertip that was awesome to me. And it clearly hasn’t ever really gotten many plays from me as I only remembered the chorus as I listened to it for this list. Not a bad song but not one for me.
Summer Rain - Basically the same comments apply to this that did to Love Whisper. In addition I’m so baffled by the fact that despite me disliking this title track, the same album has two of my absolute favorite B-sides from them! And I’ll get to those next.
And here are the foreshadowed B-sides: Ave Maria, Rainbow - These two I absolutely love from the Rainbow repackaged album that has both Summer Rain, as the title track, and Love Whisper. I really just find this so baffling. Labyrinth, Here We Are, Eclipse, Dreamcatcher, From Me - All of the songs from Labyrinth album are so good and that’s why I had to get the album. Mermaid - This one is actually the reason for me to do this list, as I was watching an episode of Amazing Saturday that featured this song and it inspired me to do the list for GFRIEND. Mermaid as a song tells way more dramatic story than I expected/had realized. Neverland - It’s an young love type of song that usually isn’t necessary my thing but this just is so catchy I can’t deny it xD Gone With The Wind - Most recently added to my list actually. I originally had not realized how great this is when I checked all of their songs years ago.

Her, Clairenina Tabitha.
She goes by Nina for short, yet, she often addressed as Taby and Bitha as well—whichever tickles your fancy is fine. Nonetheless, if another darling name mayhaps flits through your mind, she would welcome it with delight. Her ascendant took its place in a water sign which represented by the crab.
She fancy..., ♡
Music that’s easy on the ears and hits that perfect nostalgic spot is her go-to ones. What really gets her are lyrics that, while simple, are crafted with a lot of thought and feeling. A tone poem, when it tells you story through the tunes. Songs that are having its way of making you feel like you’re in a peaceful, almost dreamlike state. She fancy many kind of music but mostly are sang by The Beatles, Mazzy Star, Sade, Carla Bruni, IU, and Fiona Apple. Old songs—which spans across diverse languages for she listens to a lot of Indonesian, French, Spanish, and Korean classics. Growing up with K-Pop has definitely shaped the music she fancy. SEVENTEEN is one that she especially fond of, also Girls’ Generation, GFRIEND, ENHYPEN, STAYC, LOONA, Red Velvet, and Kiss Of Life as much.
“We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.” — John Keating, Dead Poets Society (1989).
She firmly believe that the language of love does exist right after she reads Arabic poems. They say, one of the perks of knowing Arabic is being able to read these romantic poems in its original language, because reading it in English is a totally different experience. [Oh to be fluent in Arabic. * _ *]. Anyway! Her love for literature goes beyond Arabic poetry for she cherish every form of literature—poetry, prose, drama, epic tales, folktales, etc.. She loves writing as well. Ideas often flood her mind after she sees or feels something, which then take shape into the words she pens down. She might even share a glimpse of her {mediocre} work. ♡
She drawns into films that linger long after the credits roll—movies that leave you with a lasting sense of wonder, inspire you to think differently, and even touch the core of your being. Her preferences consistently leans towards romance, comedy, coming-of-age, melodrama, thought-provoking, heartfelt, and a slight psychological-thriller. She loves loves loves talking about films, as well as giving and receiving recommendations. Endless discussion about films—whether through shared perspectives or differing viewpoints, writing a brief paragraph of review are among simple joys she cherish. As for her favorite ones ... you will find out as you get to befriend her!

2023 Music Recap (Top Tracks of 2023)

Special mention goes to Naver's new music show, NPOP! What's visually different about NPOP is that the on-screen lyrics (& group members' names) are center aligned, whereas all the other shows have lyrics on the bottom left. Gfriend - song of the sirens - ep
The new mini album will be the second part of their “回” series, and will tell the story of a girl who finds her resolve weakening in front of temptation. If “回: Labyrinth” had expressed the complicated emotions of a girl standing in front of a choice that had to be made, this new album is set to follow the emotions of feeling like one made the right choice, but finding that certainty wavering at the thought of a different path., The EP explores the choice not taken, something "everyone is going through or may already have gone through," UMJI says.
1. Apple
youtube
In the lyrics, the apple is used as a metaphor to symbolize temptation, whereas the "witch" is used to convey the confidence that comes with being honest in one’s desires.
2. Eye of the Storm
youtube
The song is based on Yuju's entry from her diary 3 to 4 years ago. When she was in a very hectic time, she spends some alone time for herself for at least five to ten minutes to get herself together, calling it "Hour of the Eye of the Storm" and wrote down some sentimental things., The lyrics tells that in the middle of a typhoon, you go to the eye of the typhoon and visit yourself without getting swept away by the typhoon. Various electronic music, including drum and bass are added with lyrical piano melodies to give a trendy and emotional melody. The powerful yet delicate-feeling sound, created by combining rock rhythms, various synths and piano melodies, doubles the atmosphere of a sophisticated song, depicting the beginning, change, still moments of a typhoon, is based on my personal story that I recorded in a diary I’ve been keeping for three [or] four years. The song depicts the moments I spent alone focusing on myself and holding on to my identity.
3. Room of Mirrors
youtube
The mirror where "I" look shabby while others would look beautiful, it uses a room of mirrors as metaphor for a world that incites envy and jealousy and makes us compare with others
4. Tarot Cards
youtube
it is a song about rather than agonizing and finding your directions, you prefer going on an easy road where answers are set. Just like a predetermined fate, it expresses a desire for someone to take over one's choices through the act of looking at a tarot card. , is a track that wishes for [someone else] to make a difficult decision on behalf of oneself.
5. Crème Brûlée
youtube
The lyrics are impressive as it takes a crème brûlée, a custard cream dessert with caramelized glass-like layer to cover it, as a metaphor when approaching temptation, it gives off a sweet scent but it is tightly closed. With GFriend's delicate and bubbly yet refreshing vocals, it gives an addictive and fun chorus that catches your ear, uses dessert as a metaphor to express the sweet scent of temptation encapsulated inside a solid and hard shell.
6. Stairs in the North
youtube
The lyrics express how you can see the scenery that you couldn't while going up the stair breathlessly, but possible when you're going down the stairs. It conveys a warm comfort of being able to go up the stairs again through the energy generated when you were coming down, was created while contemplating GFRIEND’s past, present and future, and the highs and lows of life.

OOOOO DELICIOUS FOOD
reading this got my brain juices overflowing so i want to add some more headcanons!
first up, i want to list out some artists and their concepts that i think fit them most:
1. DREAMCATCHER. duh. because xinyan is a rockstar in canon. i was thinking of xinyan doing siyeon's high notes and yun jin with yoohyeon's; a perfect juxtaposition of stylistic and classical (though yoohyeon isn't exactly a classical singer. she isn't stylistic like siyeon). ANYWAY they would have super cinematic yet (palatably) scary music videos and intricate choreography (HAVE YOU SEEN THE CHOREO FOR GOOD NIGHT). also, since this concept is horror-like barbara's smiling will fit here, making her look just like a creepy doll, or maybe a possessed barbie—though this can only fit in certain parts of their performances and songs, depending on the vibe they intend to give off.
(the ones below are some groups with concepts that don't technically have dreamcatcher's sound but still fit the group anyway)
2. billlie. i believe these girls will also serve the mystery concept. ESPECIALLY GINGAMINGAYO. just imagine everybody with facial expressions and dance moves that move like clockwork. they'd be the talk of the town, or even the entirety of teyvat. this is what first came to mind when i read about yun jin's duality (just like with haram). OOH OOH and did i mention ring x ring??? it's PERFECT as a dark concept for them.
3. everglow. i think it'd fit them all well—they have intricate dances; epic and dramatic instrumentals; and they can be dark (their title tracks starting from adios) or light (bon bon chocolat and promise; their song for unicef) whenever they want because they're just so VERSATILE. i would die to see them slay a concept like in everglow's last melody era. THEY WILL DEVOUR. YUN JIN'S HIGH NOTES. NILOU'S DANCE BREAK. XINYAN AND AYAKA RAPPING. BARBARA ALSO GETTING SOME OF THE MORE COMPLEX VOCAL LINES. trust me. i am the very stage they perform on.
4. PINKFANTASY! i think the group will also fit the unsettling kind of concept, even if the sound is more on the pop side. and, again, i took into consideration barbara's tendency to smile in performances.
5. pixy. they have a super cool dark fairy concept, though i lowkey doubted if they fit it due to how whispery their songs are, but i think they can manage that. it's the concept we are after, anyway : D
these ones are in a specific concept which can fit them too because i can't stop thinking about them with a witchy concept:
1. weeekly's ven para concept. i have no words. i just know they will fit this. i can imagine them in the mv, circled around like a clandestine coven meeting, with them dancing to a black backdrop with flashing lightning to match. THIS SONG IS SO PERFECT WITH THE WITCHY CONCEPT. COME ON. I KNOW YOU SEE IT TOO.
2. (g)i-dle's hwaa era. I JUST LOVE LOVE LOVE THE AESTHETICS THEY WENT FOR IN THESE ERAS. it's so dark, so ethereal, it's perfect for everyone. i chose hwaa mostly because to xinyan's cutscene in last year's golden apple archipelago event. it gives off a wistful, nostalgic, and earnest vibe.
4. gfriend's fingertip era! it has the slight rock twinge that fits xinyan. it's also vocally challenging so everyone gets to steal weaves with their voices. HIGH NOTES GALORE. and, ooh, its mv is cinematic, too, with a magical, galactic story!
5. le sserafim's unforgiven era. i doubted its belonging here since it's girl crush-y, designer outlet-core, and not as dark as the rest, but i chose this era and all it's worth because it came to me in a vision. BUT FOR REAL THOUGH. i chose it along with eve, psyche, and the bluebeard's wife, due to the fact that the meaning of the lyrics resonates with the girls (unforgiven for xinyan and nilou; eve, psyche for ayaka and yun jin). and also, for eve, psyche i can easily envision it with a witchy aesthetic due to its ties to mythology, and as for unforgiven, a more modern twist with witch hunts to match. AND you got the girls dancing on the poles where they "burn" (see girl from nowhere, season 1 episode 2). but genuinely speaking I JUST CANNOT LET IT GO DUE TO ITS LYRICISM, OKAY. I AM AN UNFORGIVEN APOLOGIST
and NOW. for the names.
because, for the most part, i kind of headcanon the concept to be a dark one with elements of witchiness, galactic stuff, mystery, and horror, so i decided on one name:
coven - i think this one fits them the most, especially considering the concept they're going for. it's got a dark ring to it and is on par with any of the aforementioned concepts. and also, there's the roman numeral v, which stands for the 5 members of the group! i don't know their fandom name, though.
additional headcanons:
- despite the group name representing five members i feel like hu tao might fit in the group too, especially since she performed with xinyan in this year's lantern rite. in the group, she can be a lead rapper and sub-vocalist who's known as a soft rapper, like dahyun from twice, but she's hella talented at rapping (disregard the en rap in the lantern rite cutscene. focus on the chinese and japanese version). she's very close with xinyan and yun jin, and she often gets lessons on performing from the latter. pair this girl with variety shows and you will lose your marbles cackling like crazy. she is very witty and just KNOWS how to make people laugh, and will become the subject of many compilation videos that is dedicated from the funny things she has done or the witty jokes she cracked in the shows they've been on. however, i doubt her compatibility with concepts like everglow's, as well as from the witchy concept selections mentioned above (except for ven para). she fits most of the horror concepts too, but she fits billlie's mystery concept THE MOST. honestly, i'm 50/50 on her being on the lineup because i also consider everyone's compatibility with the concept.
anyway, this is my contribution to this idol au agenda. op, thank you for the delicious food! my brainrot has been satisfied.
brb making an auditory moodboard on spotify
*banging on table with a fork and a knife* none of the genshin idol!aus include the characters who are canonically performers (PARTICULARLY YUN JIN AND XINYAN) and i want to see one so here are some very barebones headcanons!!!
i think overall their music would be in a similar style to the kpop group dreamcatcher (please listen to them they’re incredible)! i don’t have a name for them yet and also this technically isn’t a reader-insert but like, it could be, i just didn’t include one!
yun jin: main vocal, lead dancer. she was classically trained prior to joining the group, and she’s known for her unique voice, impeccable vocal technique, and jawdropping range. basically an all-around incredible vocalist. she also writes a lot of the lyrics for their music. she’s really good with her facial expressions when performing, and can go from adorable to smoldering in an instant (there are MANY compilations dedicated to her duality). personality-wise, she comes across as very composed, calm, and mature - and in professional situations, she absolutely is - but as soon as the other members start goofing off, that facade completely falls away. it’s so easy to get her to laugh, and she has a really cute, playful side that comes out most often around xinyan. practically the entire fandom ships the two (they’ve known each other the longest and are constantly talking about how they inspire one another in interviews).
xinyan: main rapper but in the same way as dami from dreamcatcher and moonbyul from mamamoo where every time she sings people are completely captivated by how great her singing voice is too. i think in terms of vocals, when she isn’t rapping, she’s doing the adlibs and the really powerful belts or growls. she also does a lot of the composing and producing for the group (and the way she names her files is completely incomprehensible to everyone else - “oogah.mp3” “beat 5.mp3″ “hhhhh.mp3″ “THIS one whEEEW.mp3″). her stage presence and energy is absolutely unmatched. extremely talented with instruments and picks them up super quickly. she’s the most underrated member of the group within the fandom but everyone within the group is completely whipped for her. she also gets scolded a lot for jumping off the stage during their shows so she can interact more with the fans.
other members under the cut!

enhypen with an idol s/o
pairings: ot7 x gn!reader
word count:
notes: fluff!
request states “Could you did Enhypen with an idol S/O pls ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ your writing is so good! And crazy accurate <3"
a/n: i took sooo long so post this but im finally out and done with my first year of college ><
heeseung
he met you because you trained together
after he joined i-land, he also suggested that you join the supposedly newer (girl or buy ofc) version of i-land
and you did!
as a trainee you both were the aces of the group
a whole power couple
started dating after heeseung debuted, so he was rooting for you during your competition...
but then when he won and became an enhypen member, you were the proudest
and when you also won and became an idol, he was your number one supporter
your group concept is pretty similar to enhypen's given you're both from be:lift
enhypen is a vampire concept, your group is a witch concept
that man is totally whipped for you
you once covered apple by gfriend and you were wearing an all black outfit with dark make up (even tho assuming you're in a boy group or girl group ofc)
heeseung: SHEESH
no forreal he could NOT stop admiring you
he would practice songs with you
and practice choreos with you as well
he loves your group's choreo and he would learn it and show off
"look y/n," *cues the music*
"oh lawd, you sure you're not supposed to be in my group instead?"
jay
you met during a convention
your groups were sent to new york to perform at kcon
you were shocked that you clicked well so fast
your group leader were also suspicious of whatever what was going on HDBHSDBH
anyways
you started dating almost a year later,
your relationship was very discreet,
yet it doesnt at the same time hdjhsdjhJJDH
like you would wear his clothes in public
some fans will pick up hints
but most of them are like "give them privacy!!!"
which is so sweet of them
anyways
secret relationship or not, you would always wear couple fits
matching necklace, shoes, bracelets
hats, shirts, pants
name it, you have everything matching together
one time dispatch made an article about you and jay
but all fans were raging and demanding them to delete the article
bc of privacy or what not
but regardless, fans still supports you and jay whether youre actually dating or not
jake
consists of indoor dates!
a lot of them!
you both like baking and indoor activities so it works well
indoor dates consist of movies, song writings and learning choreos together
there was this time you and jake just sat in front of the table and wrote songs together
you both are so in love its so cute </3
one of the lyrics you wrote was
"you're my healing, this wonderful love starts with you."
HELLO JDBHFBDHFBDH
WHIPPED AS HECK
and when jake saw that
little baby teared up a little
"i'm your healing???" -jake with a puppy face
and you're just
"stfu jake stop being giddy"
no bc this babie was sooo giddy the next few days
yes DAYS
then you were honored enough to release your song in your group's newest album
but ofc the fans may or may not know its about jakey
but that song is all what jakey listened to for the whole month
the streaming counts 80% came from him
supportive bf af
sunghoon
consist of either park dates or skating dates
he would take you skating time to time since it will be the most private bonding activity you can achieve
you're not mad at it tho because it's actually fun
but other than skating dates
that one unforgettable moment you had with him was your group and enhypen had a stage collab
and all you and sunghoon did was fool around
well you fooled around
and he just played with you
you were purposely messing up the choreography to piss sunghoon
because sunghoon is next to you and everyone would be like
"sunghoon! keep y/n in place!!"
sunghoon : (> _>)
you: :D
no seriosuly now sunghoon had to 'seriously talk to you'
but yall nailed the actual stage
many fans did not really speculate your relationship
many just assumed you were friends
but you had a late night date after the performance
which is cute because he took you to eat your favorite food.
sunoo
okay hear me out
your group concept is cute concept right
one time you were wearing the cutest hairstyle (little pigtails :c)
sunoo was sooo like
ヽ(♡‿♡)ノ
"that's my baby!!!"
records your performance btw
then backstage he would play with your pigtails
he took a lot of pictures of you as well
to ofc, set as his homescreen
while you were performing he was singing along and dancing along too.
then watches your fan cams gloriously
24/7
any fan cams existed of you he already watched it before you
maybe 5x more than you did
practices your group choreographies
then shows it off
"looh y/n!" *shows off*
you just giggled and hugged him
"are you sure you're supposed to be in my group instead?"
cutie baby with a cutie idol s/o :<
jungwon
competitions 24/7
but he HATES it
but you LOVE it
hybe and your company set you up and would always collide your comeback dates
so whenever during music show awarding you both would get anxious
because he wants you to win but he also wants his group to win
and vice versa to you
one time his group won and they won by 2 points
it was a TIE but that 2 point extra bumped their win
so he was just like
(︶︹︺) " i feel bad,,,,"
you were just like ┐( ̄ヮ ̄)┌
"its not a big deal bubba, it's just an award"
"no bubba >:( its not just an award, its THE award and we won it and you didn't"
hes so hypersensitive about it
and you were just like
(-_-;)・・・
"well, ill take the trophy then,,, THANKS WONIE HAHAHA"
"w-wait y/n no! THATS MINE!"
niki
he met you as a special mc in an variety show
during the send he was like (<.<)
and you were like :) mcing HAHA
but after the boys pushed him to ask for your info because he wants to be friends
and you were like "are you sure just friends? hahaha"
and mf BLUSHED
cutest ever istg
anyways
you gave him your info ofc

Theory: Drunk-Dazed + Connections to Gfriend and TXT Universe
Based on this theory by @soyatenada + my own connections to Gfriend’s mv
Because my big brain has finally been activated (thank you soy bene) and I’m obsessed with analyzing pieces of music, here we go:
Last chorus of “Apple” —
“Dream the red dream, endless and deep Let rise the shimmering light of destruction Don’t agonize, let go the timid child Take me, the endless witching hour descends”
The “red dream” = blood, a.k.a taking vampire blood. We’ll come back to the dream part later, because that’s important. But the red here, in my opinion, represents both blood and the apple, saying “temptation can lead to consequences.” Or if you want to be simple, it can just mean blood as in vampires. And this is also the color of the drink that Sunoo is holding in the teaser...
“shimmering light of destruction” - leading Enhypen to their destruction
“Don’t agonize, let go of the timid child”- this can symbolize them telling Enhypen to let go of their old selves, surrender themselves to another being that’s more powerful and controlling. They were scared before, trapped as children in the orphanage, but having trust in their friends (if we’re going with evil Sunoo and protective Jake theory) and following this temptation of theirs gives them a chance to shed that timid self and become confident and powerful. The “don’t agonize” part is kind of ironic, since it’s a contrast to how they will feel pain after getting bitten. Of course, it can just be false words to tempt them to become vampires.
“Take me, the endless witching hour descends” - I can see it from two perspectives: Enhypen as in them saying “take us, take everything (*cough* familiar lyrics anyone?) OR it can represent the apple/Gfriend telling them to take the path to destruction. And as I mentioned before in Bene’s post, the witching hour is when they finally crossed the line to vampire land (and yes, pun very much intended).
So....you might be wondering, well ok, that’s Gfriend’s pov, but how about Enhypen’s? And why do they use the “dream” and why does that even matter? How does it all come together?
*takes a deep breath* Grab a bucket of popcorn, because this is gonna be hella long, and I might be stretching some points, but I think this goes beyond bigger than just the Enhypen universe. It connects to both Gfriend’s and Txt’s as well (and possibly BTS’, though I need more information and research on that).
Firstly, let’s look at the lyrics from the drunk-dazed teaser (This is just a rough translation from what I’ve learned in Korean, with a little help from Google Translate. I’m not fluent in Korean, so please correct me if the translations are wrong!):
“Dazed, dazed, dazed / Dance, dance, dance / Eh, I wake you up / Eh, burn my heart / Eh, fill up my dream”
Ok, let’s break it down. There’s two main points in these lyrics alone that I feel is crucial to understanding the whole universe in general.
“Dance, dance, dance” are lyrics that also appear repeatedly in the pre-chorus and post-chorus of Gfriend’s “Apple,” further strengthening my point about the link between the two songs/groups. In this context, it can illustrate the carnival itself — a huge event meant to conceal a darker secret. The sirens, or Gfriend, want the boys to keep dancing, having fun, slowly pulling them into their trap. Again, another example of temptation luring them in.
Also, in Gfriend “Mago” they also talk about “dancing in this moment” and “my life has been waiting for you”....I have a feeling that this somehow connects to Enhypen’s next comeback...but for now, let’s just leave it here because I don’t have enough evidence to support my reasoning yet.
“I wake you up / burn my heart / fill up my dream” — In a broader sense, this can be Enhypen waking up their “other half,” a side they never shown before, as they transition to vampires. But let’s delve deeper into the last line “fill up my dream” because that’s where everything sort of fall into place (it’s more of a jumble of puzzle piece that clashes and mashed up, but I’m going to try to piece it out).
Enhypen has mentioned this “dream” before, in “Cross the Line” - “If I wake from dreamless sleep. May tomorrow begin like a dream.”
This “dream” is also referenced in one of Shakespeare sonnets, whose lines are used in “Outro: Wormhole.” The lyrics are “And yet when most I wink / Then do mine eyes best see.” I’m not going to paste the whole sonnet here, but in short, the sonnet talks about longing and dreaming. This line in colloquial terms means “But when I’m asleep / I see the best.” This can illustrate how they see the best when dreaming, and relating to the sonnet, they see “you” in their dreams. Whoever this “you” is, it’s important to them.
(Oh my god, I just got an idea of how this can also connect to their idol life as well, but Imma make that into another post instead because my brain is about to explode.)
(I got these lyrics from Genius, and some engenes there also analyze the Shakespeare language that Enhypen used in Intro: The Invitation. I might make another theory about how the sonnet in that song connects to the Outro, but I don’t want to confuse y’all so I’m sticking to the “dream” aspect in this post. If you want to see the translation and the theory, here you go)
So this dream of Enhypen’s is important to them, and the carnival seem to trigger the dream again for them. As we can see from “Cross the Line,” they want their tomorrow to be dreamlike, because their today was dull. I feel like their journey can be divided into two parts: the dull, gray, timid life of theirs in the orphanage, where they’re under the control of someone else. And then there’s the wild, fantasy-like, vampire transition, where they’re thrown into this dream-like atmosphere, and they are still being controlled, but they can’t resist it.
Now let’s go back to the line in Gfriend’s song, “Dream the red dream, endless and deep.” They want Enhypen to keep dreaming. And them becoming vampires represent that they are currently in that dream of blood.
So, ok, they’re happily living this dream of theirs. But a dream is still fake, a false distortion of reality. So...what’s reality?
Here’s where I’m kind of stretching it a bit, and this might even sound crazy (I’m already crazy so it doesn’t matter). I got this idea from @hseungsteeth, when Beanie mentioned how even it’s a prince concept, it looks futuristic. And the Down and Hype versions of the concept photos....I think they represent the reality, the opposite of this dream of theirs. We see the car crash, the red lights and gangster like outfits, so it makes me wonder: what if they want to live in this dream to escape reality? Are they living in a dystopian world where people get hurt constantly and are attacked by creepy clowns and skulls (objects from the Hype teaser videos)? I don’t have a solid claim for this yet, but I like the idea of dream and reality, two things that we also see in TXT’s videos.
Alright, this is where I try my best to link this to TXT. I think TXT has their own storyline, that differs from Enhypen, but the part where the two meet is in their depictions of dream and reality. I’m not going to go in depth into TXT’s theories, but we can see how Soobin can hear the calling of danger in magic island, how Beomgyu (I think it was Beomgyu? Or it was Soobin again) saw the images through the practice mirror, their dream of “running away” portrayed by the concept of Harry Potter. TXT also want to escape reality, because in their dream, they’re with their friends again, they’re are accepted for who they are (ex: in Crown, they realize they are not a monster just because they have horns on their head. They accept it as their “crown” and will wear it like the kings they are), and they can just be themselves. But these dreams are short, as we can see from “Blue Hour,” where Beomgyu is once again left alone after that blissful hour passes.
And these dreams come with danger too. In both Enhypen’s and TXT’s universes, we see the danger of getting marked and transition into vampires, we see the fires that can burn down that magic island. So, how can they save their dream, and confront reality?
#junjun stuffs#gosh i spent over an hour on this instead of focusing on school woeivbweiufvb#anyways#i hope you guys enjoyed reading this!#theories#txt#enhypen#border:carnival#drunk-dazed#long ass theory

GFRIEND: Reinterpreting Myth With “回” Series
GFRIEND have been borrowing women from literature and myth to be the subjects of their “回” series: Ariadne and the Labyrinth from the myth of Theseus; the mythical Siren and Biblical good and evil; Faust’s Walpurgis Night and medieval witches. The first scene of “回” depicts a clock turning backwards against a galactic backdrop, and the final scene closes with a backwards moving train, both of which reveal a desire to return to a time filled with friends and fun. This serves to symbolize a feeling that combines looking back on the past while contemplating choices for the future, and at the same time reversing motifs borrowed from myths and novels.
“回:Labyrinth” recalls the story of Ariadne who, although she plays a decisive role in Theseus’s safe escape from the Labyrinth by handing him the ball of yarn he unravels just outside the entrance, is remembered only as his forgotten lover. Unlike the established myth that focuses on Theseus’s courage, however, the focal points of the album are Ariadne’s thread and the Labyrinth. In “Twisted”, the concept photo for “回:Labyrinth”, Ariadne’s thread is there for her, not for Theseus, bundling herself up or interweaving with the others’ threads to enfold their surroundings. Seeing the members with thread in hand gives the impression they’ve each become Ariadne, wandering the Labyrinth. Unlike a maze with its crossroads leading through various possible routes, the Labyrinth has one path which is complexly tangled and difficult to navigate, but escape is possible by going back the way you came in. Therefore, in the B-side “Labyrinth”, GFRIEND are conflicted between whether to stay in a beautiful maze world or to escape from it, and, in case of “Crossroads”, the title song, they wrestle with which way to turn when two sides of the self clash. When GFRIEND sing in “Labyrinth”, “If you want to do it for me, I’m going to the end”, they focus on the inner lives of women, like Ariadne, whose story plays an important role in Theseus’s heroic tale but is often disregarded as a mere afterthought, and instead grant her a narrative. In the GFRIEND version, Ariadne unravels the thread for herself, not for her lover, and wanders through the Labyrinth, placing women who play crucial roles, but had been left anonymous, at the forefront.
Following Labyrinth, the theme of temptation is explored in Song of the Sirens and its title track, “Apple”. Original sin started when, deceived by the words of the serpent, Eve eats the forbidden fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and offers some to Adam. Unlike the Biblical portrayal of women as merely suffering as a result of temptation, the Siren myth connects women and temptation by portraying them as the temptresses themselves. The Sirens lure passing sailors with their physical beauty and pure song, and the sailors, possessed by song, steer their boat toward the Sirens’ island, only to die in the shipwreck, or else jump into the water to take their own lives. But as GFRIEND member Umji says, “Apple” is a song that “shows a girl standing before unexpected temptation, wavering. I don’t think the word ‘temptation’ carries an exclusively negative meaning.” And so the dictionary definition of enticing another onto a bad path through innocuous words or actions, and the usual image of temptation in fables, are turned on their head in “Apple” with lyrics like, “Why does that icy decision / Hurt me so? Was it a mistake?” The allusion to a “translucent glass bead glowing red” also connects the current incarnation of GFRIEND to the group’s earliest days and their debut song “Glass Bead”. Even if they can’t be sure the path they’ve chosen is the right one, they know what they want because they ate the forbidden fruit. In the “Tilted” concept photo, significant items from previous music videos, such as a diary, teddy bear, and flowers are placed on one side facing an arrangement of jewelry, money, shoes, etc. These latter items are regarded as negative, materialistic symbols of vanity and extravagance, but the group bravely weighs these two competing desires. Having followed the Siren’s song and finding the forbidden fruit, GFRIEND know what they want, and have themselves become Sirens, captivating audiences with their beauty and their elegant voices. They reject the preexisting symbolism behind temptation and flip it into a positive image.
Walpurgis Night’s title track, “Mago”, summons forth witches and their festival. As portrayed in Goethe’s Faust, Walpurgis Night is an ominous and profane day of overindulgence. When celebrated today, firewood is burned in the place of witches. But unlike in the past, when women accused of being witches were distrusted, GFRIEND’s reinterpretation presents the “modern witch”, through which they reveal women’s ambitions more realistically and in greater detail. In “My Room”, one of the album’s concept photos, the members portray these girls of the past wandering to the end of the Labyrinth to express, unwaveringly, the various themes of self-reliance emphasized throughout the “回” series: women’s material desires (Sowon), aspirations of beauty (Yerin), and the need for self-expression (SinB). This kind of subject matter connects with lyrics from the final track, “Wheel of the Year”, on the “回” series’ latest album: “It felt like I was trapped in a gigantic maze / The me who kept stopping at crossroads / Wandering around”, and, “What’s the answer? Don’t be afraid.” Like this song, with its ending not yet decided and racing toward “the place my heart responds”, awakening the image of a woman who does as she pleases, GFRIEND summons to the present not a wicked woman but the reinterpreted image of independent femininity revealing itself.
Before embarking on the “回” series, GFRIEND hinted at their growth through their shifting views on love: “Protect me always, so I won’t break”, they sang on “Glass Bead”; the reason they wanted to “run through time and become an adult” was for you (“Rough”), since “I [was] still just a shy girl” (“Navillera”). They sound serious as they sing “[I’ll] control your heart” in “Fingertip”, and, “Looking at you / Even in an uncertain future / It’s getting a little closer” in “Sunrise”, as if to say “you are my everything” to their love. The growth and change in GFRIEND’s lyrics were once centered around loved ones—friends, lovers, etc.—but their focus shifts little by little to the self as the “回” series unfolds. While “Crossroads” moves its focus slightly to the “I” who struggles to make a decision at one such intersection, there remains a feeling of being lost because “everything is still filled with you”; whereas in “Labyrinth”, the point of view pivots to the self: “If you want to do it for me, I’m going to the end.” Even more striking is the change in lyrics from the first half of “From Me” to the end: “from me to you” becomes “from I to me”. Five years after their debut, GFRIEND, seemingly destined to evolve, choose not to “go back” (the meaning of “回”) and instead grow by changing their theme from “love you” to “love yourself”, delivering a message of self-reliance to women by asking them to redirect their love inward. This can be seen as well in “My Girls”, the concept photo for Walpurgis Night. Picture frames bearing words like “adorable”, “tomboy”, and “emotional”, chosen by the group members themselves, are all words that have been used to contain women and GFRIEND, but are here their own personally selected evaluations and not the judgment of others. Now GFRIEND, after having faced uncertain decisions (“Labyrinth”), and spent time wandering about and wavering from temptation (“Song of the Sirens”), have finally reached the Walpurgis Night festival, sure of what it is they want to do.
Through themes of jealousy and conflict, uncertainty, and women’s desires and self-reliance, the “回” series escapes the confines of “woman as lover” and paints an image of women as multifaceted and three-dimensional. In “Tarot Cards”, they wish someone else would make decisions for them but finally “find [their] own answer”, and the lyrics to “Three of Cups” form with it a pair, to “Share trivial jokes / And serious worries / And it suddenly spills out / Our brightest ever, light this night.”.
Twisting the classics, GFRIEND establishes affirmation through double negation by denying negative words. It recalls the line spoken by the character Ko Moonyoung (portrayed by Seo Yeji) on the tvN series It’s Okay to Not Be Okay: “I want to be a beautiful witch.” Today, phrases like “playful witch” and “modern witch,” with words that could not have coexisted before, have started to appear. With the “回” series, women throughout history are brought back by GFRIEND through a mythical motif and reinterpreted in a way only GFRIEND can: A nameless woman disappears, only to become a modern witch and find her own way, accepts her desires without guilt, and, despite facing a negative world, puts on a festival. Now that the fireworks are here and the witches’ festival is back, let’s dance for ourselves. Your GFRIEND will be there right next to you.

Here is a list of things I loved most about each Gfriend comeback, just because I can. I’ll talk exclusively about what I like. Of course there are some things I don’t like/would do differently but this isn’t a post about that! Also, I love ALL Gfriend songs/mvs/concepts, I’m just highlighting the things that especially stuck with me.
1. Glass bead
Just the fact that I was there! I wasn’t a fan of Gfriend since their debut but I did follow them since the very beginning. Other than that, their energy here is unmatched. I love the story about how they were trying different dancing styles and they decided on the more energetic ones. Implying that they, as a group, were actually allowed to have input on the matter and I love that AND it shows.
2. Me Gustas Tu
I mean do I even have to say it? The choreo for this is god tier. The jump/split element? The transitions? The signature dance break? It’s not my favourite choreo they have but it is legendary. Then we have Yuju’s vocals and the fact that the song doesn’t use English as the second language. It is refreshing. I never get tired of it.
3. Rough
THE representative Gfriend song. The one you show to people who want to know who Gfriend are. Also, I cry when I watch this mv. I can’t explain it, it’s the combination of everything. And the styling is [chef’s kiss],
4. Navillera
Ok, this one is shallow but ... short haired Eunha changed my life. This is also when she became my bias. I love how this mv is directed, the transitions between shots are adorable. This one technically isn’t one of my favourite songs they have but it is the one that’s stuck in my head the most, so I think I actually like it more than I tell myself.
5. Fingertip
The concept change made me go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6. Love Whisper
Okay guys gather round. Love Whisper is a Criminally underrated Gfriend song. I get why, I was also guilty of this. I was so excited for Fingertip concept/sound change that I expected them to expand on that and not go back to their old sound. So I mourned the would-be. But this comeback is Amazing! ESPECIALLY the choreo, the footwork and the transitions - specifically this one - are (in my humble opinion) so fun and innovative. The song really knows hot to build the suspense, I always have a physical reaction to the bridge. Also, Gfriend invented dancing in water. 반짝반짝 빛나던 ;)
7. Summer Rain
I am always happy to hear some piano in a kpop song. The mv for this is exceptionally relaxing. I really enjoy the refrain and I personally would love to sing this song.
8. Time for the moon night
The styling! Sinb in a leather jacket! The concept photos for this are in the top two fav concept photos they ever did. Also the most emotional song they ever did. If you want to feel something...
9. Sunny Summer
Obviously, the way their names are incorporated into the lyrics is adorable. I love it when they do cheerful concepts. This song DOES make you feel 100% better. Also, rainbows.
10. Sunrise
For me it’s the romanticization of the rotation of the Earth. The refrain here is!!!!! Like I’d sing that at karaoke but also I’d cry doing it.
11. Fever
Goooood Fever. Fever! I know a lot of people don’t like this song but I am NOT one of them. Where do I even start? Yes, I love the tropical sound, sue me. The choreo is so much fun to watch, I’m happy they got to do a more energetic one again. The styling is top tier. I almost never notice make-up but Yerin’s make-up here is my fav of all time. Umji’s confidence is beautiful to see. Eunha opening the song always gets me.
12. Crossroads
We do not talk enough about how hard they went with the gay concept in this mv. AND they gave us the Labyrinth performance.
13. Apple
The styling for this made me go! ESPECIALLY the black set. I love that one leg move to the side, you know the one. And the little 360° turn. We o wow wow wow wow.
14. Mago
Wow, we’re really here? We’re really here.
Mago. It’s in the suits. It’s in the glitter. It’s in the disco balls. It’s in the flying brooms. It’s in the bell bottoms. It’s in the pole dancing. It’s in Sinb’s vest. It’s both in Eunha’s black bob AND her straight platinum hair, both of them make me go COO COO BANANAS. It’s in that red stage outfit I’m obsessed with. It’s in the shimmy she does before the last refrain. It’s in how it so perfectly encompasses the excitement of boundless potential. And then... But as Gfriend said. I won’t ever waver.
#gfriend#wow if anyone actually reads all of this... I love you#long post#kpop vs marion#mariontext#I'll only believe they really disbanded if we get nothing by 2023

Sleepy’s Favorite K-Pop Songs of 2020
1. Any Song - Zico -- this song is not particularly special, but the main vibe, “play any song that makes you happy” is exactly how my musical tastes were in 2020, for the regular reasons we all faced AND for some extra, personal reasons that made me search out happier or deceptively happy songs, or songs that lay next to me instead of crawling under my skin. I usually love when a song sings my soul back to me, but there were many moments last year that I just couldn’t handle that, or couldn’t handle it the same way I usually would. Spotify says that Any Song was played the most of, well, any song, and I know why.
2. Midnight Train - Se So Neon -- this is a song that lay beside me, from the first time I heard it and every time after. It actually doesn’t have a ton of lyrics, but the ones it has are vibrating with intention and casual pain. There is ice on the tip of your tongue but it mellows as the guitar takes you out with the tide. Sometimes the melody is clashing so hard against your teeth you’re worried it’ll just swallow you whole, but instead it falls like a heavy rain, washing everything clean. Please, please listen to this song.
3. Scream - Dreamcatcher -- they have never released a bad song, and I actually love their entire discography. It’s one of the few that I do listen to just by itself, no other artists. Dreamcatcher have never been afraid to be brash and in your face, nor do they shy away from saying how it is. There is an open wound inside this song, and your heartbeat is so loud in your ears. The lyrics are intense, the instrumentals are intense, the performances in the vocals are fire and wine and steel. I love it.
4. Can’t You See Me? - TXT -- I really loved Run Away in 2019, which for a debut year was jam packed with content. TXT has this wonderful take on youth and maturity and being real about your emotions. Their voices are soft and sweet, even while this song is talking about the disparity between reality and dreams, truth and lies. Every part of the song captures my attention, I don’t think it has any weak points, and I always picture the MV. Strawberries will never be the same. This song did sing my soul to me a little, but even though the sound was visceral it never cut through bone. It was gentle and kind, and held my hand.
5. Close - Han (Stray Kids) -- I did not expect that this little song would end up meaning so much to me, but it did. Stray Kids had an amazing year as always, but I guess my love for Han’s singing and his lyricism just got me. Han has a way of just pulling back all the weeds surrounding my feelings, but not tugging them straight out. He’s patient with the dandelions and doesn’t insist on clarity right away. This song got closer and closer to me the more I listened to it, until it was stuck in my head and I was never mad about it. There are blue skies and sunshine and someone is waiting for me, ready to smile when I turn around.
6. Back Door - Stray Kids -- the production behind SKZ’s music does continually get better, but I think the more appropriate term is “expands.” Their sound remains largely the same, while each new release tries something new, echoes the old, and continues to push the same message they’ve had since the beginning: inclusivity. Stray Kids is here for you, to welcome you into the club and to have a good time with you while we talk about the struggles we’re all facing. I haven’t yet gotten sick of this song, it goes by in a flash and for once, I don’t have a favorite part, or a section that gets stuck in my head more than others. It’s the whole package for me.
7. Kick It - NCT 127 -- NCT makes a lot of very clean, very specific sounding sounds that I don’t really care for. I have a few favorites, and actually really love the whole of the debut album, but I don’t go out of my way to listen to their music. Kick It, though, was just so much fun, it had sharp edges and and a smooth underbelly. Haechan sounds the best, I love his voice SO MUCH, but everyone sounds good. I like the unison parts, the repeat mantras, the bombastic way the lyrics aren’t really saying a lot but are so enthusiastic that you don’t care.
8. eight - IU, SUGA -- IU just continues to evolve and make music that is really, really good. None of her songs are overly complex or visionary, but they are friendly and relevant, and sit outside your door with brownies and lemonade. IU’s voice can do soft, can do poignant, can do intense, depending on her mood. She is a singer of extraordinary caliber and I love seeing everything she does next. eight was a simple but beautiful song that plays into your nostalgia without sugar-coating everything, and at the same time there’s such a lightness too it. It’s a short song and SUGA’s rap was such an unexpected addition that actually worked really well.
9. So What - LOONA -- this is a song deserving of a much higher spot, but I think I just wasn’t quite as ready for LOONA’s next evolution as others’. Still, this song is so good, with potentially the best bridge of the entire year. Everyone sounds so good, the song hypes you up and never lets you down. Even though the concept is one we’ve seen before, LOONA never makes anything sound the same. There is no compromise, there is only awesomeness.
10. ON - BTS -- I went around in circles contemplating how much I did or didn’t like this song. BTS is going places with their music that I don’t love as much as their stuff from, say 2016-18, but they are still incredible artists and performers. And ignoring all the rest, all the talk, just focusing on the song itself, it’s really good. It’s really, really good and the kind of song that I unapologetically sing really loudly in the car. There are quieter parts that acknowledge how exhausting it is to keep moving forward when you’re in pain, strong, jagged tantrums that demand that the pain try harder to keep you down, spaces to breath and places to run. This is a song that says we’re going through a battle and it’s hard, but we can see that there is an end, there is hope, and nothing will keep us down. Even through pain and tears, we can go on.
And now things get a little funky because I had a lot of favorites:
11. Tiger Eyes - Ryu Su Jeong Girls - Nature Villain - Stella Jang Boca - Dreamcatcher Left & Right - Seventeen
12. Come Back Home - ONEUS Summer Breeze - SF9 Apple - GFriend Bon Voyage - YooA pporappippam - Sunmi
13. Me Time - Yubin Easy - Stray Kids Favorite Boys - A.C.E Think of Dawn - Ghost9 The Stealer - The Boyz
14. One - Golden Child Alien - Lee Suhyun A Song Written Easily - ONEUS La Di Da - Everglow Blue Hour - TXT
15. Breath - GOT7 Hands Up - Cherry Bullet Answer/Inception - ATEEZ 90′s Love - NCT U End of Spring - ONEWE

Thanks Road to Kingdom for introducing me to this group, at first I was like “this song reminds me Infinite’s The Eye” in one part but I still remember when I heard this part of the song and thought "I love this".
9.- NU’EST - I’M IN TROUBLE
There’s nothing I dont love about this song, the chorus it’s so catchy and the dance, and baekho in pink hair and JR looking like that, perfect.
8.- GFRIEND - APPLE
Did you know I used to hate gfriend? silly me, this year gfriend gave us 2 great songs but apple makes me feel powerful when I dance the choreo, just look at them. The only thing that I didn't like was that the music sounds more strong than the voices.
7.- APINK - DUMHDURUM
Apink gave us a masterpiece for three year in a row, my queens going strong every year and I love them, they come once in a year with an amazing song to save the day and show their place in the industry and I respect them for that.
P.S. I love bomi
6.- N.FLYING - FLOWER FANTASY
youtube
This songs makes me sad, I always sing this with a lot of feeling, it’s the kind of pain I love, if a song makes you feel all these things then it's a beautiful song. P.S.it should have been the main title and I love Hweseung.
5.- IZ*ONE - FIESTA
youtube
I didn't thought I would like something from IZ*ONE but Fiesta its a bop. I was obsesed with walking with passion like in the choreo every time I went down a hall haha I love this song so much
4.- ONEUS - A SONG WRITTEN EASILY
youtube
This was my ringtone for months, every second of the song it’s perfect, you should stan ONEUS right now, I mean, just look at Hwanwoong, that man has the strongest charisma in stage I have ever seen and is always trying to seduce you with his eyes.
3.- TWICE - I CAN'T STOP ME
This song became an obsession, everything started with that dance then I watched every performance in music shows and then I had it on my phone and I listened to it over and over and over again until this day.
2.- CNBLUE - THEN, NOW AND FOREVER
youtube
What did you expect? in this house we stan CNBLUE FOR LIFE!
I WAITED 3 YEARS AND 8 MONTHS PEOPLE!
honestly I was waiting for something more like pop rock BUT THIS! oh boy, it exceeded my expectations, that chorus!!! hurts my heart in a good way, yonghwa’s voice its amazing, I love my boys so much and I'm still waiting for my signed album, stupid long distance.
1.- BTS - BLACK SWAN
YES BLACK SWAN SOTY AND YOU CAN'T CHANGE MY MIND
Black swan is a masterpiece in every sense, the MV, the music, the lyrics, the dance, the hairstyles, the clothes, omg thank you bts. The lyrics are so sad and you can feel it in the music. My favorite part is when yoongi is rapping while looking at jhope that gaze could kill me.
Honorable mentions:
MAMAMOO - Dingga
SUPER JUNIOR - Burn The Floor

wickymicky’s Top Ten Kpop Songs of 2020
3: GFriend - Mago
I wasn’t thrilled by this song at first, to be honest. After Crossroads and Apple, my expectations were fairly high, and I was expecting something sort of dark. When I first listened to it, I initially felt pretty disappointed. As I listened to it more though, I found that there is an underlying layer of darkness, but it take a while for the song to really grow on me. But damn, it really did grow on me.
As I mentioned for the previous song, retro stuff is sort of hit or miss with me. If it’s based solely on nostalgia, then it often doesn’t resonate with me because I wasn’t around then and don’t have any nostalgia for things like that haha. It has to be something that stands on its own too. My initial reaction to Mago was disappointment mostly because I thought that it would just be something I wouldn’t be into because of nostalgia. I thought there was a possibility that it wouldn’t click with me because I don’t know a lot about disco. But yeah, as I listened to it more, and as I looked at the lyrics and things like that, I began to get it. Sure, it’s inspired by disco, but it feels more to me like the song represents the conclusion of GFriend’s 2020 arc, and disco is just an appropriate setting for the conclusion they were going for. Crossroads represents depression and feeling hurt and wanting to reach out to people you used to be close with. Apple represents temptation on the surface, but there’s an air of bitterness to it as well, and if you read into the lyrics, there are lines like “don’t look back, don’t let yourself worry” as well as “why does that icy decision hurt me so, was it a mistake?”, which gives me the impression that Apple represents losing yourself in depression, chasing a high after your world is shattered and you just need to feel something.
Mago seems like the resolution of this arc. In my interpretation, it represents acceptance. Rather than still longing for this other person or trying to find something or someone else to fill that void, it represents self worth. That’s obviously a song topic that’s everywhere in kpop, there’s no shortage of self worth anthems lol, but this approach is interesting, especially with the narrative of the songs before it. The chorus goes “My life is waiting for YOU”, but the “you” that they’re talking about is revealed in the next line to be themselves. “Her smiling at me in the mirror”. They’re living for themselves. “My heart is beating for you (me), no more fairy tale”. “In the midnight, in this midnight, in the blessed flame I fly reborn”. There’s a lot of great standout lines in Mago lol. And so, with that theme, the disco concept feels like an appropriate backdrop. It serves the narrative, it’s not just a disco concept for the hell of it.
Anyway, about the song itself, the thing that kept me coming back was how incredibly catchy it is, and how well every single part flows into the next. Every line feels so perfect after the line that came before it, every movement of the instrumental feels like a natural development, it’s really a treat to listen to. The only complaint I have is that the ending is kind of abrupt, it sort of trails off, and that might be intentional, idk... but anyway it’s not a dealbreaker. I could listen to this song over and over for hours and not get tired of it.
I had no idea that I would love it this much, but here we are. At first I thought it might be around 8th place or so, and that Crossroads would be higher, but as I compared the two and thought about how each song resonates with me… I had to put it my top 5, and lo and behold it ended up at 3rd. To be honest, I kinda debated putting it at 2nd or even 1st place, but I felt like 3rd made more sense. After all, I have really strong attachments to the next two songs, and also this song is recent enough that placing it too high would feel a little premature. In a year from now, maybe I will look back and consider it the best of this year, but as things stand now, with it only having been out for a little under two months, 3rd place is plenty haha. That’s huge, in my opinion. That just goes to show how highly I think of this song. It’s not just recency bias, because there were plenty of other recent songs that I felt could be in my top 10 that I cut out specifically because I didn’t wanna be biased towards recent songs. That hesitation only knocked Mago down from potentially being 2nd or 1st to it being 3rd though. It’s a good song lol
