Like a long lost cousin Sabbath is the stranger you’ve always known. It’s the place of homecoming you’ve rarely or never visited, but what you’ve been missing forever. You recognize it the moment you set your eyes on it. It’s the gift that surprises you, not by its novelty, but by it’s familiarity. It’s the song you never sang but, hearing it now, know inside out, it’s words and melody, it’s harmonies, it’s rhythm, the way the tune quickens just before the chorus bursts. It’s been asleep in you all this time, waiting for the right kiss to wake it. Life is meant to be much different – fuller, richer, deeper, slower-from what it is. Does God have any rules about Sabbath? Or did we make them all up ourselves? It turns out, God gave only broad and general prescriptions for the Sabbath- cease work, mainly-rest, celebrate, remember, observe, deny yourself, delight yourself. I think God must be protecting us from our temptation to clutter simple things. “If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the sabbath a delight and the Lord‘s holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.” The mouth of the Lord has spoken. Drivenness erodes purposefulness. Too much rigidity stifles purpose. The truly purposeful have an ironic secret: they manage time less and pay attention more. They notice. They are fully awake. Jesus veered and strayed from one interruption to the next. His days were a series of zigzags and detours, apparent whims and second thoughts, interruptions and delays, off-the-cuff plans, spur-of-the-moment decisions leisurely meals, and serendipitous rounds of storytelling. JESUS WAS AVAILABLE. He had an inner ear for the Father’s whispers, and a third eye for the Spirit’s motions. “My whole life I have been complaining that my work was constantly interrupted, until I discovered the interruptions were my work,” said Henri Nouwen at the end of his life. MAKE ROOM FOR THE SURPRISE. His purposes and His presence often come disguised as detours, messes, and defeats. The span between life as we intend it and life as we receive it is vast. Most of us live afraid that we are almost out of time. But you and I are heirs of eternity. WE ARE NOT SHORT ON DAYS. We just need to number them a right. We hold time so right we crush it, like a flower closed in the fist. We thought we were protecting it, but all we did was destroy it. Sabbath Liturgy Treat time as a gift not a possession. Give ALL yourself to God, your breath, health or sickness, your thoughts, intents, all of who you are and your time. Be open to holy interruptions, divine appointments and Spirit ambush. Thank you for joining the Be Still Challenge! We pray this is a time of consecration and returning to your first love! Day 7 tomorrow (Eagle Pose!) and Daniel Fast begins the 8th! Tomorrow, before beginning the Daniel Fast on the 8th take time to ask God and yourself specific questions that will make your fast the best it can be. Be specific. Why are you fasting? What does consecration mean to you? 💝 How does it relate to your 21-day commitment and sacrifice? 💝 We want to challenge you right now to commit to moments of quiet prayer and intense focus on the Lord during this fast. Do you have a place where you like to pray? If not, think of a place in your home or in your daily routine that you can designate as a place to pray. Decide now where your place of prayer will be during this fast. While there are many things to fast for, in our first week we are asking you to narrow your focus to one thing your first love. Rend your heart. Simply spend time talking to your nearest and most faithful friend, Jesus. This week will be an intensely personal time to connect. For some, it will be a time to reconnect.
